Dabolt wins seat on Perrysburg Town Board Republican Jennifer M. Dabolt defeated Democratic challenger Mary Jane Stuhr, 461-200, for councilman in the Town of Perrysburg, according to unofficial results from the Cattaraugus County Board of Elections late Tuesday night.

In the Town of East Otto, William B. Spors, a Republican, beat Democrat Angela J. Sherman for councilman, 216-190.

In uncontested area races: ■ Lori Dankert (R) received 595 votes for town justice for the Town of Perrysburg.

■ Mark A. Schindler (R) recieved 663 votes for town justice for the Town of Persia.

■ Mark S. Marcus (R) received 632 votes for councilman in the Town of New Albion.

Local artist offers insight into music

Derek Gregoire, a Gowanda High School graduate, recently opened the Medic Droid at the Evening Star Concert Hall in Niagara Falls.

GOWANDA — Local musician Derek Gregoire recently performed at the Evening Star Concert Hall in Niagara Falls.

Gregoire is a Gowanda High School graduate who, at the age of 24, was able to open for Medic Droid, a band he admired as a kid.

He said sharing the stage with a childhood idol was, “extremely surreal and even more nostalgic.

“It was great because the venue makes it so you can be very personal with both the fans and the other bands,” he said. “It is something that I have always wanted to do.”

Gregoire uses a musical form

that beckons further exploration.

“It is a kind of music through storytelling,” he said. “Most of my lyrics are generally in metaphor, but when you read them or truly listen, there is a story being told alongside my acoustic guitar.”

Much of Gregoire’s inspiration for his original songs draws on ersonal re ection e says that his creativity echoes the struggles of his own life.

“One day you realize that you have put your struggles in the past, and writing about it brings a new sense of relief,” he said. “(I have) a couple songs about Gowanda in general, too.”

The dedication of veterans past and present to duty is the springboard which supports freedom. The great American story is that we, as a society, are able to govern ourselves and our wrongs are able to be controlled by balances of power.

Truly, our veterans represent freedom at is best and liberty at its finest ey are our national heroes and warriors. The cost of freedom is not purchased in a lump sum. It is paid in installments by our veterans and members of our armed services.

We, as Americans, are t e beneficiaries of t eir noble courage, unselfis sacrifice and untiring dedication; and so too are countless of freedom-loving people around the world.

In the past century alone, through two world wars and the long, tense struggles of the Cold War, and on the front lines in places such as Korea, Vietnam, Beirut, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Haiti, the Persian Gulf, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, our brave men and women in and out of uniform have risked their lives. They risked all they had to protect U.S. interests, assist our allies, promote peace, and to protect the lives of others. They fought our enemies on foreign shores, at sea and in the air to preserve freedom.

Gowanda to host annual Holiday Spirit Parade

GOWANDA — The village of Gowanda and the Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce will host the third annual Holiday Spirit Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3.

This year, the parade will pay a special tribute to first responders and will recognize fire officials, law enforcement and emergency medical service personnel at the Christmas tree lighting prior to the parade, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Chang Hu Park on West Main Street.

“This is the community’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to all the hard

work and dedication you do in protecting and serving the residents,” stated a press release from parade organizers. “We would ask that all first responders attend this special tribute at the tree lighting, as the first responders will be lighting the tree this year.”

Members of the community are invited to “join the magic of Christmas” by participating in the parade.

The route will start on Panther Drive near the bus garage at Gowanda High school and proceed down Aldrich Street and West Main Street, ending at

the traffic light.

“We ask that your business and/or organization participate in this parade to help us make this a festive occasion for our community,” stated officials.

“We ask that you decorate a float or a fire apparatus in holiday/winter theme decor.

“Help us make this year bigger and better.”

Interested participants can fill out the registration form, which can be found on villageofgowanda.com.

The parade is open to all wishing to showcase their business, organization,

church or school.

There is no fee to participate in the event.

The Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce will award prizes for best appearing float (non-firematic), and the Gowanda Fire Department will award prizes for best appearing fire apparatus or fire company float.

Police Reports GOWANDA POLICE DEPARTMENT ■ Oct. 25, 10:10 p.m., Andrew C. Waniak, 33, of Gowanda, was charged with driving while intoxicated, illegally operating an all-terrain vehicle on the road, operating an ATV without a helmet and operating an unregistered ATV on the roadway after police observed a minor injury accident involving an ATV during routine patrol. Waniak, who had been operating the ATV with a passenger, exhibited signs of intoxication and refused sobriety checks stating he was legally drunk. He refused a breath chemical test and was released on an appearance ticket for Collins Town Court.

■ Oct. 28, 9:30 p.m., William D. Morris, 30, of Collins, was charged with criminal mischief, harassment and child endanger-

ment after patrol responded to the report of a disturbance at a Buffalo Street apartment.

Patrol as notified t at after orris ad been denied permission to enter the apartment, he became irate and kicked the entry door, damaging the door frame. Morris also threatened to stab the occupants of the apartment, according to police. The incident occurred in the presence of two children.

Patrol located Morris and arrested him, releasing him on an appearance ticket for Collins Town Court.

■ Oct. 31, 7:19 p.m., Joseph J. Dagostino, 49, of Forestville, was charged with an open container of alcohol in a public area after police observed him walking on West Main Street consuming beer. He was released on an appearance

ERIE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE ■ NORTH COLLINS — Matthew Ehlers, 27, of North Collins, was charged Oct. 29 with reckless endangerment and fourth-degree stalking after a walk-in complaint at the Springville substation and subsequent investigation.

■ NORTH COLLINS — Dylan Aldridge, 26, of North Collins was charged Oct. 31 with driving while intoxicated, refusal to take a breath test and breath screening advice, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and arious ot er traffic offenses after deputies responded to the report of a motorcyclist down on Jennings Road. Aldridge was not wearing a helmet and was transported by

Mercy Flight to ECMC with a serious head injury. The crash was investigated by the Erie County Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit. Aldridge was released to appear in court at a later date.

■ NORTH COLLINS — Daisy Cumpson, 36, of North Collins, was arrested Nov. 2 on an outstanding traffic benc warrant. Cumpson was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending her next court appearance.

■ IRVING — Raymond Snow, 52, of Irving, was arrested Nov. 2 on an outstanding warrant. Snow was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending his next court appearance.

■ Nov. 4, 7:41 p.m., Kenneth G. Hawkins, 43, of Gowanda, was charged with second degree harassment after patrol responded to a Commercial Street property following the report Hawkins had harassed a female resident by pounding on the door and harassing her with lewd remarks. Patrol had previously responded to a harassment complaint concerning the same two subjects Nov. 1. He was released on an appearance ticket for Persia Town Court and issued a warning that any further harassment would result in his arrest with an arraignment. At approximately 9:46 p.m. on the same date, patrol responded to the same address for the same harassment complaint and Hawkins was again arrested for second-degree harassment. He was then arraigned in Persia Town Court and remanded to Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $500 bail.

The history of Gowanda semi-pro football

Sports Correspondent It was the middle of November in 1941 and the Gowanda High School varsity football team had just defeated Falconer to clinc t eir first out estern onference championship. And a few of the more talented seniors on the team were beginning to have visions of possibly playing football at the college level like their coach Howard Hillis did at Ithaca. However, what took place about three weeks later would change life dramatically over the next four years for those Gowanda players who were just seven months away from their high school graduation.

On December 7, 1941 Japan staged a sneak air attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and the United States was drawn into World War II. So instead of going off to college to play football in the fall of 1942, a group of 17-and 18-year-old football enthusiasts and their high school coach enlisted into one of the various branches of the United States Military. The thought

of continuing to play football beyond high school was now the last thing on their mind as they prepared to be shipped overseas to join the war effort.

As far as high school football in Western New York from 1942 through 1945, several districts such as Salamanca just offered an intramural program in the sport for a few seasons. Gowanda and several other neighboring schools continued on with their varsity football program but the schedules were scaled back and the quality of play sub par.

When World War II ended, many of the now 22 year old battle tested soldiers returned home to Western New York. And it wasn't long thereafter that the interest of playing football once again came to the forefront. Hence, in the fall of 1946, the estern e or ootball onference was formed. o anda fielded a tea called t e Tigers, consisting of mostly former high school players. Howard Hillis, who returned to his coaching and teaching duties at Gowanda High after the war, also

coached the new town team.

Besides Gowanda, the Western New or ootball onference consisted of teams from Lackawanna, Mayville, South Buffalo, Blasdell, Fredonia, North Tonawanda, Jamestown, Lancaster and a few other towns. It was called a semi-pro football league because admission was charged at the Sunday afternoon venues, fees used to purchase equipment and medical su lies and ay t e ga e officials The Gowanda Tigers played an independent schedule in 1946 and did very well. Their success continued as a charter member of Western New York Football onference in and n o e ber of 1948, the Tigers defeated North Tonawanda at the Gowanda Athletic Field by the score of 13-6 to win the league championship.

The 1949 campaign began with high hopes of another championship team when disaster struck during the Tiger's second game of the season. One of the Gowanda players suffered a serious head injury and never regained consciousness. He died

two days later and so did the spirit of the igers e tea finis ed t e season it heavy hearts while their overall record declined.

The Gowanda Tigers tried to regroup the following year in 1950 and put the tragedy behind them. It was no use. The players, many now supporting a wife and a few small children, played just a few games before calling it quits for good. The rest of the league also folded shortly thereafter.

But there was a time when semi-pro football did exist in Gowanda and pockets of Western New York. The men who competed did not have contracts, signing bonuses or pensions. They held down regular jobs during the week and practiced after work in the evenings. On Sundays, they suited u it bro en fingers, s rained ankles and various bumps and bruises. On Monday, many went back to work with some degree of a concussion. But these former World War II enlistees continued to play the sport of football for the pure love of the game. A World War only interrupted their true passion.

BCH Foundation Announces Annual Appeal Gift from Mahoney & Sullivan Financial Group SPRINGVILLE – At its quarterly meeting in October, the Bertrand Chaffee Hospital Foundation board of directors welcomed guests Kevin and Jeanne Mahoney. For a second year, they presented a donation from Mahoney & Sullivan Financial Group in East Concord in support of the foundation’s annual appeal, which began in late October.

Old Times Remembered...

Herbert E. Farnsworth, Perrysburg’s Medal of Honor Recipient Herbert Elon Farnsworth was born in Perrysburg on Aug. 23, 1834. His family had a farm on Stafford Hill Road. The intersection of Stafford Hill, Maltbie Road and West Hill Street was known as Farnsworth’s Corners.

Herbert enlisted in the Civil War in 1861 as a bugler in the 10th New York Cavalry and was promoted to Sergeant Major. He earned the Medal of Honor for bravery at the Battle of Trevilian Station, Va., fought on June 11, 1864.

The citation reads that Farnsworth “voluntarily carried a essage ic sto ed t e firing of a Union battery into his regiment, in which action he crossed a ridge in plain view and s e t by t e fire of bot ar ies efore is discharge he rose to the rank of captain.

In 1865 he married Mary E. Darby, sister of Henry Hubbard Darby, a captain in the 64th New York Volunteer Infantry for whom the Gowanda post of the Grand Army of the Republic was named. Darby was mortally wounded the day before General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, and died t e day after e arns ort s o ed est in , first to issouri, t en to Washington state where Herbert died on the Fourth of July, 1908. His descendants still live in California.
