GOWANDA — In response to a request from area businesses and organizations, the Gowanda Kiwanis Club recently donated $2,000 to Gowanda Ambulance in an effort to update the service’s ambulance fleet with new heart monitors and radios.

Kiwanis President Jerry Greenlee recently made the donation to Pat Volk, president of the Gowanda Ambulance Service Board of Directors.

“We responded to a request,” said Greenlee. “It was specifically for onboard equipment for transport service to bring the current ambulances up-to-date and meet current regulations.”

The money will be part of the more than $100,000 needed for the new equipment. Volk said the new heart monitors, once installed,

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Thespian Society, a group of students at Gowanda High School dedicated to the arts, will perform The Addams Family at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9 and Thursday, Nov. 10 in the school auditorium.

The show will feature students in grades 9 to 12 and is a comedic and upbeat take on the classic Addams Family.

something that was contemporary, something that was comedic and something that was upbeat,” explained Robin Smith, high school chorus teacher and director of the show.

The result was The Addams Family, which revolves around the plot of Wednesday Addams, the well known daughter in the family, growing up and dating a young man who comes from a “normal” family.

Gates wins SNI presidency in Seneca Party sweep

IRVING — Seneca Nation Treasurer Todd Gates was elected president in a three-way race Tuesday as the Seneca Party swept all offices over One Nation Party candidates.

Gates, of the Cattaraugus Territory, who served the past two years as treasurer, received 1,363 votes to 643 for One Nation Party candidate J.C. Seneca and 300 for independent candidate Sally Snow.

President Maurice John was elected treasurer over Darlene Miller by a vote of 1,455 to 807. Lenith Waterman was elected clerk over Geraldine Huff, 1,306 to 972.

There were 855 voters on the Allegany Territory and 1,485 on the Cattaraugus Territory for a total of 2,340 votes cast, fewer than last presidential election, when John and Miller were the candidates for the top job.

Addressing supporters afterward at the Seneca Nation of Indians Volunteer Fire Department, Gates thanked them.

“There are a lot of tough things facing us,” he said. “We are going to get things done.”

One focus, he said, will be bringing back pride in Seneca youth.

The Seneca Party “is a hard-working group,” Gates said. “We are dedicated to our community and dedicated to service.”

Another area Gates is interested in developing is economic diversity, with the Senecas going beyond gasoline and cigarettes.

Gates also mentioned environmental concerns the Senecas have — not only the ongoing North Dakota Access Pipeline protest, but also National Fuel Gas’ Northern Access pipeline project through the Springville area.

“We need to protect (the environment) for everybody,” he said.

Seneca also spoke to the media after the results were reported.

“The people voted,” he said, adding he is looking forward to the 2018 elections. “The Nation will move forward,” Seneca noted there were 998 straight-ticket votes out of more than 1,300 votes cast for Gates.

Plus, students have managed to squeeze time in during class periods at school and Cassidy Smith even sometimes on Uncle Fester weekends to prepare.

That means 34 students who are sacrificing many weeknights to volunteer in the program. Smith said of those students, 23 are involved in sports and have had to balance their time schedules accordingly. “They go above and beyond,� she said about all the students in the show. “They are usually the role models in our school who can take on more responsibilities, prove they can handle it and prioritize their time. Plus, their parents are so supportive.�

Outside of acting, preparation for the performances is also needed in everything from costumes to set design to makeup.

Both students and adults have been involved in these processes, Smith explained. “We definitely have some awesome helpers,� she said.

Smith said she believes The Addams Family is a show that can appeal to people of all ages, from those who knew the classic television program to those who simply want a good laugh with a good message that can be learned from it.

Tickets to the show are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students. There will also be a free senior citizen preview show at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7.

It almost seems as if the entire country simply wants this election to be over. From social media posts to newspaper commentary pages nationwide, this year’s election has been the brunt of jokes and source of sometimes mindless conversation banter about its absurdity.

The 24-hour news channels and political pundits have been given material that seems to write itself. Sometimes it’s tough to tell if the debates we watched this election season were authentic or Saturday Night Live reenactments.

But let’s not lose sight of this very, very important point: come Tuesday, Nov. 8, the country will decide on its next leader the same way it has for more than two centuries.

And no matter how out-of-the-box this election cycle has been, our right to vote hasn’t changed.

We encourage you to exercise this very important right on Election Day. This is your friendly reminder that, whether you are excited about this year’s Presidential candidates or sickened by them, you have a responsibility on Nov. 8.

It’s also important to note that although news coverage has been dominated by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, there is plenty of other items on the ballot that need your attention.

In Cattaraugus County, arguably more im-

portant than the Presidential race, are races for our 23rd Congressional and 57th State Senate districts.

Both Republican incumbents — Tom Reed, our representative in U.S. Congress, and Catharine M. Young in the state Senate — are facing Democratic challengers this year in John Plumb and Lee Hyson, respectively.

At a newspaper of our size, focused on community issues with a small editorial staff, we chose not to publicly endorse candidates. However, we’ve sat with and interviewed the candidates and done our best in the past several weeks to help you decide who you’d like to see represent you.

And regardless of the choices, who has represented us and who will represent us in the future, we believe it is part of a healthy and constructive democratic process that we have choices in this year’s election for both the U.S. Congress and New York State Senate seats.

This could prove to be a pivotal time for our country, regardless of who is elected our next President. That could go without saying.

But don’t lose sight of the importance of local elections in this year’s election cycle and don’t let the Presidential election wear you down or keep you from the polls. This is an important time in our region, including in our city, and your voice needs to be heard.

Obituaries

Guy Patterson JIMERSONTOWN — Mr. Guy Patterson, 88, of Jimersontown, formerly of the Cattaraugus Territory, died suddenly Oct. 29, 2016, at Olean General Hospital.

Born on June 14, 1928, on the Cattaraugus Territory, he was a son of the late Frank and Edith Crouse Patterson.

He was an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians and of the Wolf Clan.

He retired from the Operators Local 17, Buffalo, as a heavy-equipment operator. He also worked for the Seneca Nation Department of Public Works for many years. He was an avid gardener who loved the beauty of nature, travel, the fine arts and antiques.

He was married to Lois Marie Parker Patterson, who predeceased him.

He is survived by five daughters: Diane Linda Williams and her daughters, Marie E. (Scott Snyder) Williams and granddaughter Scotia, and Nancy A. Williams, and grandson Frank Wolfe; Patricia Ann Scanlan and her six children, Cheri Lynn (Mark) Nash and their eight children, Cheryl Lynn Curry and her six children, Charles Guy (Jodi) Patterson Scanlan and their 10 children, Thomas Scott (Darrelyn) Scanlan and their six children, Darra Lynn Lichy and her two children, Darrell Jay (Raelynn) Lichy and their two children, and five great-grandchildren; Rosemary Patterson and her three children, Leslie Rachel John, and her two children, Spencer “Bonce” Pierce and Rochelle Patterson-Pierce, Jeanne Patterson and her four children, Jack D. (Courtney) Redeye

He was later with his loving partner, Jacquelyn Bowen, and her children, Todd Waite; Kelly Waite, and her three children; and Sara (Dave) Isaac, and their three children. He thought deeply of her father, Ralph; brother, Dennis; and sister, Becky Bowen.

Mr. Patterson was also survived by two sisters, Shirley Kennedy of Versailles; Judy Crawford of Gowanda; a brother, Rex “Duke” (Ann) Patterson of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Patterson was preceded in death by three daughters, Jenny John (survived by three children, Robert John, David John and Jason John), Susan Edith Patterson and Penny Patterson; and a brother, Frank Patterson.

Family and friends called Tuesday (Nov. 1, 2016) at the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca, at which time funeral services were held with Mark Nash officiating. Graveside services were held Wednesday (Nov. 2, 2016) at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gowanda.

ORCHARD PARK — Edward M. Urbank, formerly of Gowanda, passed away Monday (Oct. 31, 2016) at Hospice of Buffalo surrounded by family.

Edward was born Sept.

28, 1930, in Gleasonton, Pa., the son of Martin and Mary (Pirc) Urbanc. On June 5, 1954, he married the former Patricia Kay, of Youngstown. Patricia passed away July 15, 2016.

Edward retired from New York state after nearly 40 years; he worked as a vocational instructor at the former Gowanda Psychiatric Center where he taught upholstery.

Edward is survived by four sons, Michael (Pamela) Urbank of Glendale, Ariz., Daniel (Deborah) Urbank of Collins, Thomas Urbank of Lockport and Andrew (Amy) Urbank of Lakeview; three daughters, Kay Ann (William) Snyder of Apalachin, Joanne (Scott) Bolton of Idaho Falls, Id., and Theresa (Christopher) Parish of Orchard Park; a

sister, Helen (late Frank) Mikol; 24 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

LITTLE VALLEY — An Olean man was given prison time for three separate cases involving rape, governmental obstruction and other crimes Monday, Oct. 24 in Cattaraugus County Court, District Attorney Lori Rieman’s office reported Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Benjamin J. Bloomfield, 39, who is currently incarcerated in Cattaraugus County Jail in Little Valley, was sentenced to four years in state prison and three years of post-release supervision for thirddegree rape, a class E felony; and two concurrent one-year terms for third-degree assault and obstructing governmental administration, both class A misdemeanors.

Bloomfield forcibly compelled another person into oral sexual conduct and Feb. 13 in Olean, Rieman stated.

Bloomfield was further sentenced to a determinate two years in prison and three years of postrelease supervision for another third-degree rape count and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor. Between June and September 2014, he had sex with a person younger than 17 in Olean and Portville, Rieman stated.

In a last case, Bloomfield was sentenced to one year of incarceration for second-degree criminal trespassing, a class A misdemeanor. That incident occurred Nov. 1 in Olean, Rieman stated.

County Judge Ronald Ploetz presided.

IN OTHER CASES: ■ Justin D. Vreeland, 34, of Olean, pleaded not guilty to third-degree criminal

possession of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, both class B felonies. Authorities allege Vreeland possessed and sold an unspecified type and quantity of narcotic drug on April 1 in Olean, Rieman stated.

The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Richard Fancher, 22, of Machias, was sentenced to six months in Cattaraugus County Jail and five years of probation for third-degree attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class C felony; and a concurrent six months in jail and five years of probation for the attempted unlawful manufacturing of methamphetamines, a class A misdemeanor. The incident occurred Dec. 16 in Yorkshire, Rieman stated.

■ Lorienda VanCleaf, 48, of Olean, was sentenced to five years of probation for third-degree attempted sale of a controlled substance, a class C felony. VanCleaf attempted to sell an unspecified type and quantity of narcotic on Nov. 7 in Olean, Rieman stated.

■ Daniel P. Klein, 27, of Olean, but currently at the county jail, was sentenced to two to four years in state prison for third-degree burglary, a class D felony; and six months of incarceration for thirddegree assault, a class A misdemeanor.

The incident occurred on June 1 in Persia, Rieman stated.

■ Lenny A. Pena, 21, of Olean, but currently at the county jail, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted assault, a class E felony. The incident, reportedly involv-

ing a senior citizen, occurred on March 11 in Olean, Rieman stated. In another case, he pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony; and seconddegree obstruction of governmental administration, a class A misdemeanor. On April 10 in Olean, he damaged property exceeding $250 in value and stopped a public official from performing duties, Rieman stated. Sentencing was scheduled for Jan. 3.

■ Leroy J. Williams, 31, of Allegany, was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of post-release supervision for second-degree assault, a class D felony. The incident, reportedly involving a deadly weapon, occurred on May 25 in Olean, Rieman stated.

■ Kerwin W. Smith, 36, of Salamanca, pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated, a class D felony; first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a class E felony; and failure to keep right and speeding, both violations. Authorities allege the incident occurred on March 31 in Salamanca, Rieman stated. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Shane Rice, 26, of Olean, but currently at the county jail, pleaded guilty to third-degree attempted burglary, a class E felony. The incident occurred on June 20 in Olean, Rieman stated. Sentencing was scheduled for Jan. 3.

■ Taylor A. Jadlowski, 20, of Machias, was sentenced to five years of probation for fourth-degree grand larceny, a class E felony; and unlawful possession of mari-

juana, a violation. The incidents occurred between May 28 and June 13 in Machias, Rieman stated.

■ George Diamantes, 28, of Machias, pleaded not guilty to two counts of driving while intoxicated, class E felonies; driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on a public highway and not wearing a helmet on an ATV, both violations. Authorities allege the incident occurred on May 7 in Machias, Rieman stated. The case was adjourned for motions.

■ Vicki Pascucci, 48, of Olean, was sentenced to five years of probation for third-degree criminal sale of marijuana, a class E felony. She sold more than 25 grams of marijuana on June 24 in Olean, Rieman stated.

■ Brad M. Clayson, 29, of Olean, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, a class E felony. He drove with a 0.20 percent blood alcohol content in Olean, Rieman stated. Sentencing was scheduled for Jan. 3.

■ Rube Lee, 63, of Cheektowaga, pleaded guilty to second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a misdemeanor. The incident occurred March 8 in Ashford, Rieman stated. Sentencing was scheduled for a later date.

■ Ricky L. Armstrong, 37, of Salamanca, pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal contempt and resisting arrest, both class A misdemeanors. He disobeyed a court order and resisted arrest on Jan. 7, 2016, in Salamanca, Rieman stated.

Sentencing was scheduled for Jan. 3.

Ex-Salamanca man shot dead; suspect in custody COLLINS — A former Salamanca resident was fatally shot Oct. 26 in Collins, and a suspect has been apprehended and charged by police.

At approximately 1 a.m., state police and the Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to reports of a shooting at 12975 Route 438 in Collins, located on the southern border of Erie County. Dustin M. Sharp, 31, of Hamburg, formerly of Salamanca, did not respond to lifesaving measures and succumbed to his injuries on-scene, according to a police press release issued Oct. 27.

Daryl M. Bland, 22, of Buffalo, was charged Wednesday, Oct. 26 with second-degree murder in connection with Sharp’s death. He was arraigned in Eden Town Court and remanded to Erie County Jail.

According to The Buffalo News, Sharp and Bland were described as “ac-

quaintances” by Capt. James Hall of the New York State Police. However, no further details were available at press time regarding the circumstances of the shooting, as a call to a state police press officer late Oct. 27 went unreturned.

In a press release, the Seneca Nation of Indians identified Sharp as a descendant who had died following a gunshot wound to the chest. Although it did not name Bland, the release reported a male suspect was found hiding in a nearby abandoned home by Seneca Nation Marshals.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is continuing to review the events surrounding Sharp’s death.

Holiday Helping Hands begins toy collection drive in Gowanda GOWANDA — The Gowanda Lions Club and the Gowanda Police Department are again joining forces to help provide a Merry Christmas for children living in our community who might not otherwise have much to celebrate over the holidays.

The Holiday Helping Hands program will provide toys and gifts to children from infancy to seniors in high school who are residents of the Gowanda School District. Toys obtained by direct donations and purchase will be distributed from Dec. 10 through Dec. 16. Unwrapped toys will be collected at Community Bank NA, Gowanda Harley Davidson, Gowanda Moose Club, Gowanda Police Department, Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Gowanda Library and Shop N Save. In addition, Gowanda Ford will again have their "Fill a Truck with Toys" campaign

to benefit the Holiday Helping Hands program. Please made your toy donations to any of these locations by Dec. 9.

Last year, 271 children received Christmas presents through Holiday Helping Hands and Christmas meal boxes were provided to 101 families.

November is American Diabetes Month SPRINGVILLE — In November, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) calls attention to diabetes with American Diabetes Month. Employees at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and the Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home will be wearing gray on Monday, Nov. 14, which is also World Diabetes Day. Gray was established as the designated color for diabetes in the early 1990s.

Diabetes has been called an invisible disease, with about 29 million Americans dealing with the chronic illness and another person diagnosed every 23 seconds. With 86 million Americans in danger of developing this condition, raising awareness of diabetes symptoms, treatment options, risk factors and ways to lower those risks are of high importance.

The stereotypes and myths about diabetes can be addressed through the awareness efforts of national organizations like the ADA. Local outreach from health care providers and primary care centers to patients and families also plays a key role in clearing up confusion about diabetes.

Education programs like the one at BCH are helpful for patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes to access accurate, relevant and current information about these conditions. BCH’s Diabetes Education Program is accredited by the American Association of Diabetic Educators and offers group and individual classes for pre-diabetics and diabetics.

The BCH diabetes support group meets on the first Monday of most months.

This group continues with the topic “Holiday Eating” on Nov. 7 and “Web Sites and Apps” on Dec. 5. There is no cost to participate in this group. For more information, call 592-9643.

Cleveland Hill scores 14 in final quarter to end Panthers’ season

CHEEKTOWAGA — The Gowanda/Pine Valley Panthers’ season came to an end Saturday in the hands of Cleveland Hill, but not without a fight in the second half.

The Panthers (6-3) lost to Cleveland Hill, 26-6, in the semifinal game of the Section 6 Class C playoffs. Gowanda/ PV put up a valiant effort throughout the game, but a few big fourth quarter plays for the Eagles gave the home team the victory.

Cleveland Hill (8-1) found success on the ground against Gowanda/PV, racking up 248 rushing yards, with 172 of those yards coming on four scoring plays. On defense, Gundy Ortiz and Ethan Francis each had nine tackles, Marcus Jones had eight and Caleb Maloney helped out with an interception.

While the Eagles hit big plays, the Panthers’ offense moved the ball consistently but only scored a lone touchdown.

Gowanda/PV ended the game with 190

yards, with 162 of them coming on the ground.

Kameron Alexander ended his memorable season with 31 carries for 133 yards and a touchdown. Francis completed four passes to Ortiz for all 28 of the team’s passing yards. Throughout the game, Gowanda/PV earned nine first downs versus Cleveland Hill’s seven.

Both the Panthers’ and the Eagles’ defenses came out ready play on the Saturday afternoon. The Panthers’ first drive on offense ended with a turnover on downs near midfield after failing to convert a fourth-and-eight. The Eagles first drive was similar, as they also turned the ball over on downs. The tough defenses led to a scoreless first quarter.

There was 7:59 remaining in the second quarter when Cleveland Hill scored

the first touchdown of the game. Matt Eldridge turned a sweep play into a 74-yard scamper down the sideline. The Panthers prevented the Eagles from converting any points after the score and neither team would score for the remainder of the first half.

Gowanda/PV stayed within one possession until Eldridge found the endzone once more after a 30-yard run with 2:28 remaining in the third. The Eagles maintained their 12-point lead into the fourth quarter until Gowanda scored with 10:48 remaining in the game. After converting a fourth down, the Panthers’ Kameron Alexander scored an 18-yard touchdown.

Even after missing the extra point, the Panthers were suddenly back in the game.

Cleveland Hill hit another big play on the very next drive, though, which

greatly diminished the Panthers’ chance for victory. The Eagles’ quarterback, Tyler Phillips, caught the Panthers with some misdirection and ran a QB draw for a 62-yard touchdown. Phillips’ touchdown regained the Eagles’ two possession lead just 46 seconds after they had lost it.

The Panthers were unable to answer and turned the ball over on downs in their own territory, giving Cleveland Hill the chance to cushion their lead. The Eagles did just that as Aaron Wahler scored from five yards out with 6:22 remaining in the game. Wahler also caught a pass in order to score two extra points after his touchdown. After one more fruitless Gowanda possession, all the Eagles had to do was ice the clock to secure their 26-6 victory.

The Panthers finish the season with a notable 6-3 record.

The Gowanda/Pine Valley High School varsity football team traveled to Cleveland Hill on Saturday, Oct. 29 for a Class C semifinal showdown but lost 26-6. The Panthers never held the lead but were still in the game until Cleveland Hill scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to go up by 20 points. Gowanda/Pine Valley's one-dimensional offense that relies solely on their ball control inside running attack was then forced to pass. Unfortunately, the Panthers were only able to complete a few short throws for minimal yards and never threatened.

Gowanda/Pine Valley finished the season with a record of 6-3.

The Gowanda/Pine Valley junior varsity football team completed their season the previous week on Saturday, Oct. 22 with a 44-28 victory over JFK in Cheektowaga. The Panthers sixth win of the season was highlighted by an offense that rushed for over 450 yards. Workhorse running back Jordan Bailey led the way with three touchdowns. Justin Kohn, Ryan Gernatt and Isaiah Wheeler also reached paydirt for the "baby" Panthers.

The Gowanda Recreation "Learn to Ski" Program at Holiday Valley will hold its final registration on Monday, Nov. 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the village board room located at 27 East Main St. The cost for those students in grades 5-12 that have their own equipment is $235. Students that have to rent skis will pay $330 and renters of snowboards will pay $350. The price includes round trip transportation to Holiday Valley for eight consecutive Sundays beginning Jan. 8. There is also a free bonus day in March.

The History of Gowanda Youth Football

By Mark Benton Sport Correspondent Since Gowanda entered two teams called the Jets and Packers into the Cattaraugus County Midget Football League in 1966, the last week of October meant it was time for the championship game.

However, at the conclusion of the regular season in the fall 1966, members the upstart Jet and Packer squads just turned in their equipment. The thought of reaching the championship game in their first season was not comprehensible for the Jets and Packers whose combined record was 4-9-1.

When the 1967 season began, the league expanded into more towns. They also divided each town that had one, two or three teams into a pee wee (ages 8-10) and midget (ages 1113) division. For Gowanda that meant two Jet and two Packer teams. Subsequently, the participation level doubled.

The midget Jets and Packers both did very well in their new division that also consisted of Randolph, Cattaraugus, Little Valley and Ellicottville. The more established teams from Salamanca Xabers (yes that is how they spelled their nickname), Warriors and Blue Devils plus Springville (Bills and Colts) were in the other division. The midget Jets and Packers won all of their division games but lost in their crossover battles with the Salamanca and Springville teams.

Finally, on the last week of the regular season in 1967, the

midget Jets and Packers, both 4-0 in divisional play, would square off against one another at the Gowanda Athletic Field on a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon. The winner would not only be crowned division champs but have the opportunity to play for the overall league championship the following week.

A large crowd was on hand and witnessed the first game between the pee wee Packers with key players such as Al Orth, Tom Elliot, Jolly Howard, Richard Benton, Ken Hammond and Bob Zeman defeat the pee wee Jets. And although their was no championship game for the victorious pee wee Packers, they had won six straight games after losing their opener at home to Randolph.

In the midget contest, the game was intense and remained scoreless until late in the fourth quarter. Jet quarterback Kevin Hinkley broke the goose egg with a run around the right end.

On the extra point attempt, Hinkley again ran the same play and scored. The Jets defense behind the play of Kevin "not to tall" Regan, Tim Massar and Kevin Howard stiffened and they won by the score of 7-0. In just their second year, the Gowanda area youth football organization had produced a champion.

However, the following week, the Jets traveled to Salamanca and were soundly defeated by the Xabers. The final score was 28-7.

In 1968, the midget Jets put it all together and defeated the Springville Colts in Springville to win Gowanda's first youth league football championship. The Jets had defeated the Packers 26-14 during the regular season and the Boston Patriots in

the first round of the playoffs to advance. Top players on the Jet squad during the championship season included: Dan Post, Willy Kota, Mike Urbank, Rudy Rote, Nick Sherwood, Steve Haines, Keith Conrad, John Peglowski, Norman Peters, Murray Davis, Tim Regan, Tim Noecker and Tom Bartlett. The coaches were Vic Witherell, Lou Selan and Art Palumbo.

By year four, the midget Packers under the direction of coaches Stan Burzak, Ed Mentley, Terry Mentley, Robert Jimerson and Dennis Tingue went undefeated during the regular season. But the Boston Patriots came to Gowanda and erased an early deficit to win the championship. The Packer team consisted of three sets of brothers (Benton, Woodard and Utley). In the pee wee division, both the Jets and Packers won their respective division and faced one another. In a hard fought contest, it was the pee wee Jets under coach Henry "Puffy" Sprawka that prevailed. What a proud day for Gowanda youth football as three of their four teams played in the championship games.

Over time, the Packers and Jets (also known as the Seahawks for a few seasons) have won several championships at both the pee wee and midget level. In 2011, Gowanda left the Cattaraugus County Midget Football League and joined up with the OATKA league that consists of teams from Erie County. Gowanda now has four teams each in a separate division based on age called the Panthers. And almost every year since they made the move north, at least one Gowanda team has brought home a championship banner.

Let’s Travel Club to hold dinner GOWANDA — At the Oct. 17 meeting, the Let’s Travel Club finalized plans for the annual Thanksgiving dinner.

Instead of holding a potluck dinner on Nov. 7, members will be traveling to Goode’s Restaurant on Route 62 in Collins for a 5:30 p.m. dinner. Reservations are required and members who did not sign up at the meeting should contact Brenda Bailey or Pat Gunsolus.

Three couples were recognized at the meeting: Bruce and Tillie Moody and Fenton and Lucy Brown, who both celebrated their 70th wedding anniversaries; and Wayne and Dorothy Harvey, who celebrated their 63rd anniversary.

Movie Night EAST OTTO — There will be a movie night at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Brooklyn Free Methodist Church. The movie is free and open to the public.

Dr. Gavin Davison Achieves Board Certification SPRINGVILLE — Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is pleased to announce that after taking his examinations this fall, Gavin Davison, MD has been board certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Not all practicing surgeons are board certified. Certification is different from possessing a medical license, which is the minimum required by law to practice medicine.

“Now that the hospital (in Gowanda) is gone, the ambulance becomes even more paramount in serving the medical needs of the community in getting them to an institution that can help them,” she said.

Greenlee said members of the Kiwanis Club meet regularly and among its items of business will discuss any solicitations it receives from area organizations. After all, among the main purposes of the Kiwanis Club is to support local community groups in their efforts, he said.

The Kiwanis Club has two major fundraisers annual — the upcoming Election Day Spaghetti Dinner and the Geranium Sale in May. The dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 8 at the Gowanda American Legion Post 409. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children.

The donation request for onboard equipment for Gowanda Ambulance isn’t the only fundraiser the organization is currently pursuing. The group broke ground earlier this year on a new building on Aldrich Street and is continually looking for funding for that as well.
