PAOLO COLOMBO

“I just picked up a pencil and my old box of watercolours, which I still have, and started as if not one day had gone by. I have only used watercolour and paper during my whole life because I think it is easily transportable and because it is a technique that does not allow for corrections.” Painting in watercolours is “a strictly intimate practice which demands to be seen one on one, like one would read a book.”

b. 1989, France.

French artist, Hopare since his first graffiti 15 years ago on the walls of Limours, he has forged a very strong graphic identity and embarked on a deeply humanist journey. Emerging from strong contrasts of colours, his dreamlike portraits are structured by dynamic black lines, the artist’s trademark, which give his works their futuristic look. Yet, the faces of his work do exist they are Hopare’s way to pay tribute to the people he meets in the course of his travels.

His entire process is therefore rooted in a humanistic approach, reminding us of the importance of respect and exchange, but also of the fight for equality and justice. Although, he does not intend to be political, his works have a powerful social and political resonance. In 2019, he was commissioned to do a 1,000m2 mural in Atlanta for the Super Bowl. He will be doing the Forum des Halles in Paris in 2021.

“Love, sharing, a global consciousness of the world without falling into stereotype. Being a vector of knowledge, joy, questions and trying to give back as much as I receive from others through my work: the other is my motto.”

DOMINIQUE LACLOCHE

b. 1960, Rome, Italy.

Dominique Lacloche is a French artist, living and working between Paris and London. For more than 20 years, Lacloche has been photographing fragments of landscapes and developing the negatives onto giant Gunnera Manicata leaves, a species of South American plant that has been in existence for 150 million-years and is distinctive for its disproportionate leaf size, measuring up to 2 or 3 meters wide.

Lacloche’s method is exploratory and empirical: an initial experiment of photographic revelation on the giant Gunnera leaf generated the first ‘imageleaf’. It is through light that this unique plant and photographic technique converge – the unpredictable nature of organic life and of chemical ‘life’ plays out through both photosynthesis and photographic revelation. The images revealed on the leaves are most often of landscapes reflected in water. At our scale, the images are encompassing and poetic, absorbing us in their reflection.
