YULIA LEBEDEVA

b. 1989, Novosibirsk, Russia.

Yulia Lebedeva lives and works in London.

A still and moving image artist, she is driven by colour and motion and captures the excitement of now. Yulia Lebedeva’s work is rhythmic, feminine and self-evolving. Taking inspiration from artists such as Hassan Hajjaj and Slim Aarons, her images grow from an intimate setting of one’s personal commodities, capturing the utopian dream-like setting with a steady yet playful ambience. Lebedeva graduated from University of Arts London in 2011 with a BA honours in Arts, Film and TV. In 2015, she completed a masters in Photography, Video, Sculpture at The Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia.

She has assisted German fine-art and fashion photographer Juergen Teller and American portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz. Lebedeva’s most recent exhibitions include: Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow/ Moscow House of Photography (2019), York, November, Aesthetica Short Film Festival, mind(e) scape (2017) and ASVOFF, fashion film festival, mind(e)scape (2017).

YULIA LEBEDEVA

“21st century human relationships and interactions are at the core of my artistic practice. My photography focuses on capturing people in their various habitats, driven by colour, capturing the excitement of now. My work is rhythmic, feminine and self evolving. It grows from an intimate setting of one’s personal commodities or memorable symbolical elements into the utopian dream-like yet calculated and steady ambience. It feels almost like music with its own rules of rhythm, repetition and imagination. The photos usually convey the mental landscape that surrounds modern humanity. The required lifesaving cocoon of prosperity, light-heartedness and the ‘good life’ that people weave by documenting and carefully selecting events in their life, creating their own ‘comfort zone’.”

DIANA LUI

b. 1968, Malaysia

Diana Lui is a photographer from Malaysia. She was sent to California to study, moved to Belgium and now lives and works between Paris and Kuala Lumpur. Her transient life between three different continents has developed in her a heightened sense of “rootlessness”. This “loss of self” became later the center from which her art took shape. Consequently, her work for the last 30 years questions the changing definition of crosscultural identities, past, present, future identities, hybrid identities as well as non-identities.

A master with the 8x10 inch view camera, Diana Lui develops projects over several years. Diana Lui’s large format black & white photographic portraits have been compared to August Sander’s portraits of the German people. Lui is invited regularly to direct workshops around the world with international festivals such as the Rencontres d’Arles in France and Venezia Photo in Italy. Lui has exhibited in some of the most prestigious institutions in the world - Guangdong Museum of Art, Shanghai Art Museum, Fototeca de Monterrey in Mexico, Museo de Bellas Artes Caracas in Venezuela, Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi(Belgium), Institut du Monde Arabe(Paris), Musée Les Abattoirs and Musée Paul Dupuy in Toulouse, France. Public collections include the Guangdong Museum of Art, Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi, Museo de Bellas Artes Caracas, University of California Los Angeles, etc. Recent private collectors include the King Mohammed VI from Morocco and the new Mandarin Oriental in Marrakech.

“The positive message: It is the small things we do, every hour, every day, that give meaning to our lives. Living, simply, like a wave in the ocean that must keep on until it dissipates. The negative message: “It is not God’s response to human sins but sheer human hubris that might bring the world to its end”. Adi Orphi, Two Essays on God and Disaster

“My goal is always to move people and to cause wonder in the viewer. I think this is mainly because it is what I enjoy myself. Essentially when you take a photograph someone is allowing you to look at them, and that is a gift. So I feel duty bound to do the best pictures for those people, and also I want to take pictures that moved people. When I talk about the feeling as opposed to the composition, I mean this, that I was looking for some truth, something authentic and in any case, my vision was always emotionally driven.
