l pasado 9 de noviembre la Cámara Peruano Británica celebró 35 años de vida institucional con diversas actividades en compañía de nuestros socios.

La relación comercial con Gran Bretaña nace oficialmente desde el período de la independencia del Perú, dado que los primeros préstamos bancarios otorgados por la banca londinense viabilizaron el arribo de la Expedición Libertadora y sus consecuentes acciones. Durante este período Thomas Rowcroft arribaría al Perú, hace 200 años, para presentar sus credenciales en calidad de Cónsul, siendo el primer representante de la corona británica. Desde los inicios de la República se inició un intercambio comercial intenso en casi todos los campos de la economía, textilería, agronomía, ganadería, banca, infraestructura ferrovías, medicina, educación, construcción naval, actividades navieras y otros diversos campos. Recién hace 35 años, gracias al apoyo del área comercial de la Embajada Británica y la participación de diversos empresarios peruanos y británicos se fundó nuestra Cámara. Desde los inicios se estimuló el intercambio comercial de múltiples productos y servicios de origen británico y se apoyó la exportación 4

n 9th November, the British Peruvian Chamber celebrated 35 years of institutional life with various activities in the company of our members.

The commercial relationship with Great Britain officially arose from the period of Peru’s independence, given that the first bank loans granted by the London Bank made the arrival of the Liberating Expedition and its consequent actions viable as well. It was during this period that Thomas Rowcroft arrived in Peru, 200 years ago, to present his credentials as consul, being the first representative of the British Crown. Since the beginning of the Republic, an intense commercial exchange began in almost all fields of Peru’s economy, such as textiles, agronomy, livestock, banking, railway infrastructure, medicine, education, shipbuilding, shipping activities and many other areas. It was only 35 years ago, thanks to the support of the commercial area of the British Embassy and the participation of various Peruvian and British businesspeople, that our Chamber was founded. From the beginning, the commercial exchange of many British products and services was stimulated and the export of national products was supported. During the first years, commercial activities were favoured. However, today we

Es importante recordar el día de hoy los nombres de personas que dieron su valiosa contribución para consolidarnos, tal como Tom Malcomson, George Russell, Alan Duncan, Luis Vega entre otros. A ellos les toco articular los intereses de la Embajada y de los empresarios británicos y peruanos. Entre las empresas que nos acompañan hasta el día de hoy están el naciente Corporativo Overall, que hoy tiene más de 14,000 colaboradores, así como la firma Multivalve. Cabe destacar que esa membresía original no solo incluía a empresas registradas en Londres, sino también a muchas locales y grupos de profesionales peruanos cuyo denominador común era la conexión en diversas formas con el Reino Unido. Durante estos 35 años se han sucedido en el Perú y el Reino Unido diversos cambios que todos conocemos, positivos o negativos y que siempre han significado un reto para nuestra Cámara. El reto más reciente fue la pandemia que afectó duramente toda la actividad gremial. Consecuentemente me gustaría agradecer a nuestra Gerente, Sra. Nancy Velarde y al equipo de la Cámara por mantener en forma inquebrantable durante este período su disposición y ánimo de servicio a nuestros socios. Gracias a este esfuerzo hemos recuperado membresía y venimos recibiendo nuevos socios. Estos resultados no hubiesen sido posible sin la dedicación de nuestros directores. En los momentos más difíciles han sabido apoyarnos y brindar siempre el más apropiado consejo, teniendo siempre en cuenta la misión de nuestra Cámara. Agradezco a nuestros directores, Dr. Eduardo Benavides, Sr. James Goldsworthy, Sr. Jose Tudela, Sr. Diego Ortega, Sr. Laurent Carrasset, Sr. Luis Vega, Sra. Maria del Carmen Fedalto, Sr. Bruno Bueno y Sra. Milagros Morgan.

are also devoted to disseminating and supporting new activities and interests with social content, transforming ourselves into a Chamber with a purpose. Today we must remember the names of those who gave their valuable contribution to consolidate our Chamber, such as Tom Malcomson, George Russell, Alan Duncan and Luis Vega, among others. It was up to them to articulate the interests of the Embassy and British and Peruvian businessmen. Among the companies that accompany us to this day are the nascent Overall Corporate, which currently has more than 14,000 employees, as well as the Multivalve firm. It should be noted that not only did this original membership include companies registered in London, but also many local and groups of Peruvian professionals whose common denominator was the connection, in various forms, with the United Kingdom. During these 35 years, various positive and negative changes have occurred in Peru and the United Kingdom; we are aware that they have always represented a challenge for our Chamber. The most recent challenge was the pandemic, which severely affected the whole union activity. Therefore, I would like to thank our Manager, Mrs Nancy Velarde, and the Chamber team for unwaveringly maintaining their willingness and spirit of service to our members during this period. Thanks to this effort we have recovered membership and are receiving new members. These results would not have been possible without the dedication of our directors. In the most difficult moments they have known how to support us and always provide the most appropriate advice, always taking into account the mission of our Chamber. I want to thank our directors, Dr Eduardo Benavides, Mr James Goldsworthy, Mr Jose Tudela, Mr Diego Ortega, Mr Laurent Carrasset, Mr Luis Vega, Mrs Maria del Carmen Fedalto, Mr Bruno Bueno and Mrs Milagros Morgan.

Algunos eventos como la agitación geopolítica, el hundimiento de las valoraciones, la inflación y subida de los tipos de interés ha hecho retroceder a los mercados privados de todo tipo. Franco Horna, gerente senior de Sostenibilidad y Cambio Climático de PwC Perú, sostiene que la tecnología climática se ha definido para agrupar a todas las innovaciones y tecnologías que específicamente están focalizadas en la reducción de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero o para abordar los impactos del cambio climático. Por darle una clasificación, las aplicaciones de la tecnología climática se pueden agrupar en 3 frentes:

or investors in climate tech companies, the last two years have been a test of determination and adaptability. Events such as geopolitical turmoil, plunging valuations, inflation and rising interest rates have set back private markets of all types. Franco Horna, senior manager of Sustainability and Climate Change at PwC Peru, maintains that climate technology has been defined to group all innovations and technologies that are specifically focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions or addressing the impacts of climate change. To give it a classification, the applications of climate technology can be grouped into 3 fronts: • Directly to the mitigation or removal of greenhouse gas emissions • Adaptation to the impacts of climate

• Directamente a la mitigación o remoción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero • Adaptación a los impactos del cambio climático • Mejorar el entendimiento del clima Tomando en consideración los resultados del estudio Climate Tech 2023 de PwC, el cual agrupa el análisis de cerca de 8000 emprendimientos de tecnología de climática y más de 32000 acuerdos por un valor de 490 millones de dólares a nivel mundial realizados durante el 2023, se identifica que la inversión se ha desacelerado en los 2 últimos años debido principalmente a tensiones geopolíticas globales, caída de ciertos mercados internacionales, inflación y subida de tasas de interés, afectando también a la inversión en tecnología climática. Por lo tanto, Horna precisa que el principal apoyo que podrían recibir aquellos emprendedores o empresas es el acceso al financiamiento. Asimismo, el especialista señala que muchas empresas en el mundo y en Perú están asumiendo compromisos relacionados con el cambio climático, principalmente para generar un buen impacto o imagen en la sociedad. Pero, ¿qué pasaría si el regulador crea mecanismos para medir y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero? ¿Qué pasaría si cada vez hay más predisposición de los clientes por comprar a una compañía que genera un producto con el 100% de energías renovables? Definitivamente, las empresas, para mantenerse en el mercado, estarían prácticamente obligadas a crear nuevas formas de reducir sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Ahí es donde podría intervenir la tecnología climática.

Inversiones para la tecnología climática “Según nuestro estudio, el mayor foco de los inversionistas por invertir en tecnología climática se encuentra en emprendimientos que trabajan en tecnologías con mayor potencial de reducción de emisiones como la captura, utilización y almacenamiento de carbono, el hidrógeno verde y los alimentos alternativos” - Franco Horna, gerente senior de Sostenibilidad y Cambio Climático de PwC Perú. Adicionalmente, el especialista señala que hay algunos sectores que tienen mayores emisiones y que han asumido una mayor responsabilidad como el sector industrial o el energético, pudiendo ser más atractivo para un emprendedor desarrollar

change • Improve understanding of climate Taking into consideration the results of PwC’s Climate Tech 2023 study, which groups together the analysis of nearly 8,000 climate technology ventures and more than 32,000 agreements worth $490 million worldwide carried out during 2023, it is identified that investment has slowed down in the last 2 years due mainly to global geopolitical tensions, the fall of certain international markets, inflation and rising interest rates, also affecting investment in climate technology. Investments for climate technology “According to our study, the greatest focus of investors for investing in climate technology is in ventures that work on technologies with greater potential for reducing emissions such as carbon capture, utilization and storage, green hydrogen and alternative foods” - Franco Horna, senior manager of Sustainability and Climate Change at PwC Peru. Additionally, the specialist points out that there are some sectors that have higher emissions and that have assumed greater responsibility, such as the industrial or energy sector, and it may be more attractive for an entrepreneur to develop technology in these industries. Another front of attack, according to Horna, is the improvement in the development of business cases by entrepreneurs so that the inherent risks of an investment are covered before the investor makes a decision. Business cases that are not very solid regularly lose strength when an investor makes the corresponding evaluations. This becomes more critical if we talk about climate technology, since in 4

Otro frente de ataque, de acuerdo con Horna, es la mejora en el desarrollo de casos de negocio por parte de los emprendedores para que los riesgos inherentes de una inversión se encuentren cubiertos antes de la toma de decisión del inversionista. Casos de negocio que no son muy sólidos regularmente pierden fuerza cuando un inversionista realiza las evaluaciones correspondientes. Esto se vuelve más crítico si hablamos de tecnología climática, ya que en la mayoría de los casos, son nuevas prácticas o tendencias que aún no se han testeado en el mercado.

Escenario peruano en sostenibilidad El gerente senior de Sostenibilidad y Cambio Climático de PwC Perú asegura que, al igual que otras tendencias en el mundo todo avanza más rápido en otras economías como en Estados Unidos o Europa, donde ya se tienen políticas para combatir el cambio climático y en muchas casos compromisos más exactos por parte de gremios o empresas. Este desfase, genera también que el conocimiento e implementación de tecnología climática en nuestra región y en Perú sea menor. “A pesar de ello, hay diversos programas promovidos principalmente por asociaciones internacionales, bancos de desarrollo o inclusive gobiernos extranjeros en donde han creado espacios de conexión entre inversionistas y emprendedores climáticos. Asimismo, realizan un asesoramiento a estos emprendedores para que los casos de negocio sean más atractivos y tengan un mayor impacto en el mercado”, finalizó Franco Horna.

Our progress towards carbon zero At Cambridge, we believe in making commitments that are measured using science-based targets. With this in mind, we’re committed to doing our best to support limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 by becoming carbon zero on energy-related emissions by 2048. Cambridge is committed to improving the energy efficiency of all facilities and switching to renewable electricity wherever possible. But we know the world needs us to do more. Let’s look at some of this in more detail.

From paper to digital More and more of what we do is becoming digital, which helps us to cut down on the amount of paper and plastic we use and create less waste. We’re exploring the carbon impact of our digital products so we can make them lighter - this means they will use less data, will be more accessible and be better for the planet.

Getting our products around the world

Every year, we ship learning materials around the world. We’re working to reduce our carbon footprint when getting our products from our suppliers to customers all over the world. This involves looking at the most carbon efficient routes of supply.

Wider impacts We are also reducing the impact we have on the environment and our communities by working to improve the sustainability of the materials we source and the suppliers we work with.

A lower-impact supply chain We don’t just care about what goes into our products, we also care how they’re made. That’s why we’re working with all our print suppliers to improve their carbon and environmental footprint too. We require all of our printers to be part of the Book Chain Project https:// bookchainproject.com/home and meet minimum forest sourcing paper standards. The Book Chain Project is a sustainable supply chain tool that gives publishers more details on the social and environmental credentials of the mills and printers that they use. Cambridge University Press & Assessment has adopted the maturity model of the BCP as part of the vetting and approval process for new printers and to support collaboratively the development of existing print suppliers. We specifically look at suppliers’ environmental and human rights credentials when we choose who we work with.

Only sustainably sourced paper Paper is at the heart of our heritage, and the biggest part of our carbon footprint comes from paper used to create our English course books and exams. Our goal is to only use certified sustainably sourced paper and we are nearly there. De este modo, el BRITÁNICO reafirma su compromiso con el desarrollo integral de niños y adolescentes de diferentes sectores, a través de iniciativas que buscan empoderar y trascender las aulas. Throughout the years, the collaboration of BRITÁNICO has allowed this dream to become a tangible reality for many talented young people. On this occasion, thanks to the Municipality of Lima, the 20th anniversary of the project was celebrated at the Segura Theater with a presentation on November 27, as part of its Vamos al Teatro program.
