All beings all beings are fundamentally equal. This statement indicates the possibility to rethink the relation between artificial object and natural products. The concept of Shade Temple was rooted in such understanding that the nature itself was an inherent part of the temple, and the artificial structures would only be meaningful when experienced together with the nature.

The final design was merely a continuous screen structure with decking set along the south, west and north periphery of the Abbey’s Lawn, connecting the spiritual moments. The screen was made of charred wood, a traditional Japanese timber finishing method which has a similar symbolic meaning with the Shade Temple: a simple and minimalist artificial touch to reveal the divinity of nature.
