Welcome to the 2025 National Championships!
Congratulations to each of you for earning your place at this premier event by winning your Division Playdowns. This achievement reflects your skill, determination, and love for the game.
This year, we are proud to welcome players making their first appearance in this championship arena, as well as many familiar faces returning to compete again. Together, you represent the very best of our sport athletes who value competition, camaraderie, and the spirit of fair play.
Over the coming days, may you experience great matches, lasting friendships, and moments you will cherish long after the final bowl is delivered.
Good luck, and good bowls to all!
Regards, Pam

Congratulations to all of the players who will proudly represent their divisions this year! Your participation is a reflection of the dedication and hard work you have put in to make it to this premier competition!
The BowlsUSA National Championships Committee has worked for the past year with team Laguna Beach to make this an experience to remember. Volunteers have stepped up to help take care of the details that will make the days run smoothly, so you will have the best experience possible both on and off the green. Organizing the draw, tabulating results, providing hospitality, recruiting markers and scoreboard flippers, enlisting umpires, planning Opening and Awards ceremonies, caring for the greens, and a myriad of other tasks all need a committed cadre of enthusiastic volunteers. Please acknowledge their efforts in the coming days.
The committee welcomes feedback on your experience here in Laguna Beach. It is our intent to continue to streamline the planning and organization of this preeminent tournament so that future possible hosts will feel comfortable stepping up to offer their own venues to our nation’s top bowlers. Again, congratulations and good bowling all!

Heather Stewart
On behalf of the National Championship Organizing Committee, we extend a warm welcome to all competitors, spectators, volunteers, and guests attending this year's Bowls USAsponsored event. The Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club is proud to host this tournament and trusts that it will be memorable for all.
The Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club, along with its committed volunteers, has been preparing for this event since the beginning of the year, if not earlier. Our sincere thanks go to the Greens committee members, who have ensured the playing surfaces meet tournament standards and optimal speed.
The National Championships, established in 1957, involves pairs teams and singles players who have won their respective divisions, both men’s and women’s. The players will participate in a week-long round robin competition, culminating in the declaration of the 2025 National Champion. We anticipate witnessing outstanding performances and memorable plays throughout the event.
This year’s lineup includes both returning and new players, providing an opportunity for division winners to reconnect with previous participants and meet newcomers. Best of luck to all the players as you compete against each other in the tournament.
The SWD Livestreaming Committee will be filming the matches each day. This is an exciting development that will give friends and family the opportunity to watch the games from the comfort of their homes. End-by-end scoring will also be offered.
Thank you to the Laguna Beach club members, lawn bowling supporters, committee members, and dedicated volunteers whose hard work throughout the tournament will make this event memorable for everyone.
Heather

Prior to the start of play on Day 1 of the National Championships, a player or team may designate one (1) coach for the duration of the tournament. No coach may be designated once play commences on Day 1, nor may a coach represent more than one player or team. Players may not be designated as a coach. In the event that a coach cannot remain for the duration of the event, an alternate coach may be designated; however, the original coach may not return once their designee replaces them.

After delivery of their third and fourth bowl
**Note:** In exceptional and limited circumstances, a singles player can ask the marker for permission to walk up to the head, or a skip can ask that a player walk up to the head earlier than described above.
At Opening Ceremonies and During Competition:
Players shall wear their divisional or coordinated team shirts with collars. Pairs players' bottom attire must be the same color.
Team colors for uniforms shall be predominately the Division color. Footwear must be worn and be flat-soled and heel-less. The TD and/or Controlling Body reserves the right to disallow any specific shoe. (Medical footwear may be worn with the approval of the TD.)
Penalties If the Controlling Body finds a participant is in violation of the Dress Code, the participant shall receive a warning. A second offense may result in the loss of a game.
Collared shirts are not required, nor is matching lower body attire. T-shirts with short or long sleeves can be worn, but they must be free of offensive images and language and political slogans. Footwear must be worn and be flat-soled and heelless.
If a jack in motion passes completely outside the boundaries of the rink of play, comes to rest in any hollow in the face of the bank, or rebounds to a distance of less than 18 meters from the mat line, the end must not be declared dead. Instead, the jack must be placed with the nearest point of the jack to the mat line on the 2-meter mark.
All scorecards must be signed by the opposing skip or singles player at the end of each game. The winner must turn in the scorecards to the Tournament Director immediately after the game ends.
A dead end is not counted as a completed end even if all the bowls required to be played have been played. If the bell rings signaling the end of play, and if the end in progress is declared a dead end, the end must be replayed per law 20.
Three (3) points for a win, one (1) point for a tie, and zero (0) points for a loss.
At the completion of round-robin play, if two players or teams are tied for first place, they will play off for the championship. See Appendix A for tie-breaking procedures involving more than two teams or players.
No player may use electronic equipment (cell phone, tablet, watch) while play is in progress for the purpose of text messaging, taking photos, videotaping, reading email, using FaceTime, etc. All electronic devices must be on mute. A player may use earbuds to listen to music or white noise, but said use must not be discernible to an opponent. Players who use a body-worn device to monitor health-related conditions may do so, but notifications from said device must not be discernible to an opponent.
There is no smoking allowed in the clubhouse or on the greens and their surroundings. No alcoholic beverages are to be consumed during play, during lunch, or between games.
This event will be live streamed by Bowls USA and posted to World Bowls YouTube channel.
The Controlling Body (TDs, Draw Masters, and Head Umpire) has the authority to make changes that are deemed appropriate in the event of inclement weather, unforeseen circumstances, and/or any substitutions, only if necessary. Decisions will be within the Laws of the Sport of Bowls and Bowls USA Domestic Regulations.
A
(Source: National Championship P&P, May 3, 2023)
The length (shot or ends) of playoff games will be announced by the NCTD. When possible, full-length games will be played; however, weather and/or time constraints shall allow the NCTD to change this condition.
If there is a two-way tie for first place, based on match points, there will be a ONE-game playoff to determine first- and second-place winners. If there is a tie for second place, based on match points, the winner will be determined by the head-to-head outcome of their game already played. If the result of the head-to-head game was a tie, then the next tiebreakers will be plus points followed by the for/against ratio.
In the event of a 3, 4, 5, or 7-way tie for first place, shots FOR and AGAINST teams in the round robin will be totaled.
The team with the highest net shots from that calculation will be seeded #1, the second highest If the calculation of the net shots results in a minus, the team with the LEAST MINUS will be seeded ahead of another having a greater MINUS.
If the net shots result in a tie, then shots FOR will be divided by the sum of the shots FOR and the shots AGAINST. The resulting higher percentage will be seeded higher.
In the unlikely, but possible event that this calculation results in a tie, then the results of the head-to-head match during the round robin will determine the higher seed, which will be seeded #2, etc
The seeded teams will play off according to the charts attached to this document.
