LA PHOTOGRAPHIE OCCUPE UNE PLACE PARTICULIÈRE ET MOUVANTE dans le champ artistique, dans la mesure où elle circule entre œuvre et document, témoignage social et expression intime, entre récit structuré du monde et évocation sensible. C’est d’ailleurs cette absence de prédestination qui en a fait très tôt un outil d’expérimentation fécond pour des artistes de toutes provenances. Le visiteur des Boutographies pourra parcourir l’ensemble de ces univers de représentation, faire un tour d’horizon significatif de la création photographique contemporaine. Tout ce qui est montré ici est porté par de jeunes, parfois très jeunes auteurs, dont le rapport à leur propre époque est impressionnant de sensibilité et de maturité en même temps. Les images photographiques sont associées au son, à l’image en mouvement, au texte et à la littérature, dans des scénographies souvent complexes et toujours argumentées. Les démarches elles-mêmes sont multiples : venues du documentaire, de la sociologie, des arts visuels, du cinéma ou du théâtre, mobilisant les réseaux sociaux et les thèmes scientifiques, elles montrent que ces jeunes auteurs s’inscrivent pleinement dans les questionnements artistiques et sociétaux d’aujourd’hui.

Après la Suisse en 2015, le monde germanophone est très présent en 2016, avec pas moins de quatre auteurs allemands et deux auteurs autrichiens. La présence autrichienne est notamment le fruit d’une collaboration avec nos amis de Fotohof, très actifs galeristes et éditeurs à Salzbourg, que nous accueillons à Montpellier avec grand plaisir. Le travail exceptionnel sur « Les machines qui sauvent » de Reiner Reidler, l’un des deux photographes autrichiens présents cette année, sera exposé à la faculté de médecine dans le cadre des liens que nous tissons avec les universités de la ville.

Sur le plan des collaborations avec des acteurs culturels européens, signalons encore la présence de l’excellente Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie berlinoise, école dont nous présentons des travaux depuis plusieurs éditions, et qui propose cette année une sélection de ses étudiants en projection. Le partenariat avec FotoLeggendo (Rome) se poursuit et se consolide, alors qu’un projet commun se met en place pour la première fois avec les festivals d’Odessa (Ukraine) et de Batumi (Georgie), déjà appariés entre eux, et dont les représentants sont venus nous rencontrer cet automne. Ce partenariat se traduit dès cette année par des échanges d’expositions entre nos trois manifestations, en avril et octobre.

Autour de la manifestation centrale se déroulent comme à l’accoutumée nombre d’évènements. Expositions Hors les murs dans une douzaine de galeries associées, lectures de portfolios avec les représentants d’une dizaine de festivals européens, projections, remises de prix, ateliers pour les scolaires et médiations par les équipes de La Panacée complètent le programme et font des Boutographies un temps fort pour les photographes et pour le public montpelliérain dans toute sa diversité.

PHOTOGR A PH Y OCCUPIE S A DISTINCTIV E A ND CH A NGE A BLE PL ACE IN the artistic field, in as much as it moves between the œuvre artistic and the documentary, the social observation and the intimate expression, between a structured narration of our world and emotive allusion. It is this absence of predestination that qualified it right from the beginning as a prolific tool of experimentation for artists of all pedigrees. The visitor to the Boutographies can browse the totality of these spheres of representation in a significant overview of contemporary photographic creation. Everything shown here is the work of young, and often very young, creators, who demonstrate an affinity with their epoch, impressive both in its sensitivity and its maturity.

Here, photographic images are associated with sound, with movement, with text and literature, in a scenography that is often complex but always judicious. The approaches themselves are multiple: stemming from documentary, from sociology, the visual arts, from cinema or theatre, mobilizing the social networks or scientific themes, they show that these young creators adhere fully to the artistic and social questions of today.

After the Swiss in 2015, Germanic culture is very present in the 2016 edition, with no less than four German artists and two Austrian ones. The Austrian presence is the fruit of our collaboration with our friends from the very active Salzburg gallery and publishers, Fotohof, who we are delighted to welcome to Montpellier. The exceptional work on “Lifesaving Machines”

by Riener Reidler, one of the two Austrian photographers present this year, will be shown at the Faculty of Medicine, as part of the ties we are building with Montpellier’s universities.

Concerning our collaborations on a European cultural basis, we should mention the presence of the excellent Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie from Berlin, a school whose work we have already presented in previous editions, and that offers us this year a selection of its students’ work in projection. The partnership with FotoLeggendo (Rome) continues to progress and to consolidate, while a joint project is under way for the first time with festivals in Odessa (Ukraine) and Batumi (Georgia): festivals already operating jointly, and whose representatives came to meet us this autumn. This partnership will result in an exchange of exhibitions between our three festivals in April and October of this year.

Around the main festival, there are, as ever, a number of events. The Hors les Murs exhibitions in a dozen associated galleries; portfolio reviews, with the representatives of ten European festivals; projections and prize awards, plus workshops for school pupils and mediation by the Panacée’s own team complete the programme and ensure that the Boutographies will be a memorable moment for photographers and for the Montpellier public in all its diversity.

NÉES DANS LE QUARTIER BOUTONNET À L’INITIATIVE D’UNE POIGNÉE DE PASSIONNÉS, les rencontres européennes de la photographie de Montpellier n’ont eu de cesse de grandir depuis leurs débuts, en 2001. Accueillies depuis deux ans au Centre de culture contemporaine de La Panacée, elles posent les enjeux de la photographie d’aujourd’hui au travers d’une programmation toujours plus exigeante.

Témoignage de vie, mise en scène ou expérimentation esthétique, la photographie est une pratique riche de multiples facettes qui sont tour à tour explorées dans la sélection des Boutographies.

Particulièrement reconnu pour sa découverte de talents émergents, ce festival a déjà primé nombre de jeunes auteurs qui développent aujourd’hui des carrières internationales. Être sélectionné pour participer aux Boutographies, c’est accéder à un tremplin, se confronter au regard aguerri de professionnels et à la curiosité du grand public. Pour un photographe en devenir, c’est un moment essentiel qui permet de structurer son travail et de se tisser un réseau.

L’accompagnement des jeunes artistes est un acte militant et nécessaire dans un environnement social particulièrement fragilisé. Il est de notre devoir de maintenir et de renforcer notre engagement auprès des acteurs qui relèvent ce défi de l’émergence. Cela participe de la préservation même des valeurs qui fondent notre exception culturelle.

Pour cette qualité d’approche et de réflexion éclairée par le monde de l’image, je suis très fier de soutenir cette manifestation depuis son origine ainsi que d’assister, d’année en année, à son ancrage sur le plan national et européen.

CONCEIVED IN THE BOUTONNET DISTRICT OF MONTPELLIER BY A HANDFUL OF ENTHUSIASTS, the Rencontres Photographiques de Montpellier have never ceased to grow since their inception in 2001. Invited these last two years by the Centre for Contemporary Culture, the Panacée, they examine the issues of today’s photography by way of an increasingly demanding programme.

Fragments of life, mises en scene or aesthetic experimentation, photography is a discipline rich in multiple facets which are explored in turn by the Boutographies’ selection. Particularly reputed for its discovery of emerging talents, this festival has already rewarded numbers of young artists who are today making international careers for themselves. To be selected to participate in the Boutographies is to gain access to a springboard, to expose one’s self to the seasoned regard of professionals and the curiosity of the public at large. It is an essential moment for an up-and-coming photographer, which allows him to structure his work and to construct a base for himself.

The support of young artists is a militant act, necessary in a particularly fragile social environment. It is our responsibility to maintain and reinforce our commitment to those who take up the challenge of creativity. That in itself helps to preserve the founding values of our cultural uniqueness.

For the quality of its implication and its informed reflexion on the world of the image, I am extremely proud to have supported this event since its origins and to share, year after year, in its endurance at a national and European level.

MARIUPOL Mariupol, une ville de la région du Donbass, est

située sur la ligne de front du conflit ukrainien. Un demi-million d’habitants y vivent. C'est la plus grande ville du secteur ukrainien directement concernée par la guerre.

La photographie n’est pas là pour nous décrire les enjeux stratégiques et les soubassements géopolitiques d’un conflit. La photographie ne parle pas, ne dit rien.

Une série photographique n’est pas un exposé des causes et des conséquences.

Elle ne vient pas non plus nous faire entendre le discours, formaté ou personnel, retors ou sincère, de tel ou tel protagoniste. La sensibilité d’un photographe attentif à ce qui l’entoure donne à entendre beaucoup moins et beaucoup plus.

Dans l’instant choisi à la fois par son regard, son corps et son esprit se dessinent les formes d’un monde irréductible à une seule explication, préservé dans le chaos même qui le constitue, mais apparaissant soudain comme la résultante de l’ensemble des évènements qui l’ont précédé, proches ou lointains. La grande photographie documentariste fait apparaître l’instant dans sa quasi-inexistence temporelle, et dans le même temps interrompt l’interminable récit des évidences répétées. L’instant photographique n’appartient pas à ce récit mais le creuse et le déborde. Les images de Marek M. Berezowski ont cette capacité particulière à dépasser les limites du cadre, à repousser le fond de l’image vers des histoires dont nous savons les premiers mots mais jamais les derniers. CM

mariupol Mariupol, a city in the Donbass region, borders the first

line of fire in the Ukrainian conflict. With a half a million of inhabitants it is currently the largest city on the Ukrainian side, directly threatened by war.

Photography’s role is not to elucidate strategic issues or the geopolitical fundaments of a conflict. Photography doesn’t speak, it tells us nothing.

A series of photographs is not an exposé of cause and effect. Nor does it let us hear the discourse, ritualistic or personal, contrived or sincere, of such and such protagonist. The sensitivity of a photographer, attentive to his surroundings, enables us to understand much more and much less. In the instant chosen by his eye, his body and his reason, emerge forms of a world that cannot be reduced to a single explication, preserved as it is in the chaos of its own making, but appearing suddenly as the result of all the events which have come before, near or distant. Great documentary photography reveals an instant in its almost non-existent time frame, and by the same act breaks the interminable recital of repeated certitudes. The photographic instant doesn’t depend on this recital, but reinforces and surpasses it. Marek Berezowski’s images have this particular capacity to exceed the limits of their frame, to confront the essentials of the image with stories of which we know the first words, but never the last.

THE KODAK MOMENT

Au commencement, des images sans importance particulière, sans enjeu hors du cercle des proches. Mais certaines des images originelles présentent une étrangeté comme accidentelle, non voulue, parce qu’elles ne semblent pas être le fruit d’une intention particulière, et ne portent pas non plus de « sens commun » identifiable. Compositions déséquilibrées, attitudes inexplicables, mises en scènes lourdes et comme se moquant d’elles-mêmes engendrent un trouble chez le récepteur, sans doute parce que les codes esthétiques de ces photographies restent ceux d’un monde que l’on voulait rassurant, celui des années heureuses lissées par les instants Kodak. Un deuxième démenti à la fonction initiale consensuelle de ces images est infligé par l’absence des visages. Endroit vers lequel convergent naturellement les regards des spectateurs de la photographie, les visages ont disparu, ne laissant subsister que l’incongruité de leur absence. En frustrant ainsi notre désir de trouver dans l’image une présence, un miroir, le début d’un récit, Peter Franck met l’accent sur la façon dont nous recherchons fantasmatiquement, imaginairement, une coexistence ­consolatrice avec le monde des représentations. hout any particular importance, outside that of a close circle of friends and family. But certain of these images present an almost accidental strangeness, un-sought after, in that they don’t appear to have been conceived with a particular intention in mind, and don’t conform to any identifiable accepted notion. With unbalanced compositions, inexplicable poses, laborious dramatisation, as if refusing to take themselves seriously, these images disturb the viewer, no doubt because the aesthetical codes of these photographs remain those of a world we prefer to consider as reassuring; that of the untroubled golden years of the Kodak Instant. A second rebuttal of their original consensual function is the absence of faces. The faces, the natural focus of a viewer’s regard, have disappeared, leaving only the incongruity of their absence. In frustrating our desire to find a presence, a mirror, or some beginning of a narrative, Peter Franck puts his finger on the way in which we seek, in our imagination and phantasms, a consoling co-existence with the world of representation.

OTPUSK – OUT OF THE BLUE Les photos de plage, ce lieu où

les codes de la bienséance quotidienne sont oubliés avec allégresse, sont nombreuses. Celles de Life’s a beach de Martin Parr ou de Massimo Vitali sur les plages italiennes sont dans nos mémoires, comme une mélancolie des moments d’enfance sans entraves, des premiers émois adolescents. Kirill Golovchenko donne à ces scènes cocasses ou tragi-comiques une sorte de « forme-tableau », mais un tableau dont le cadre inattendu contribue à souligner la légèreté, l’inconséquence de ce qui se joue ici. Au-delà de sa présence esthétique, ce cadre circulaire est aussi le trou de serrure au travers duquel on épie, le téléscope qui permet d’observer les terriens et leur étrange écosystème, ou encore le microscope qui autorise l’examen des détails invisibles à l’œil nu. Dans tous les cas, la position de voyeur du photographe est assumée clairement, et même proclamée, dans ce parti-pris d’interposer cet objet qui « surcadre » la scène, en un geste réjouissant de revendication du droit au regard photographique, au moment où il est entravé dans l’espace public et dévoyé au profit de l’auto-communication narcissique sur les réseaux sociaux. otpusk – out of the blue Photos of the beach, the

place where the conventions of our daily lives are happily put aside, are commonplace. Those of Life’s a Beach, by Martin Parr, or Massimo Vitali’s Italian Beaches are in our memories, like melancholic moments of a childhood without constraints, or the first stirrings of adolescence. Kirill Golovchenko creates in these drole or tragi-comic scenes a kind of “photo tableau” but a tableau in which the unexpected frame contributes to the sense of lightness and inconsequence of what is at stake here. Beyond a simple aesthetic presence, this circular frame is also the keyhole through which we spy, the telescope which lets us observe the earthlings and their strange ecosystem, or the microscope which permits us to see those details invisible to the naked eye. In all these cases, the role of the photographer as voyeur is clearly assumed, and even heralded, by his choice of interposing this “superframe”, in a celebratory gesture to reclaim the right to a photographic regard in these times when it is circumscribed in the public space or diverted as a narcissistic self-communication on the social networks.

FADING Les images d’Elis Hoffman

englobent l’ensemble des constituants du visible dans une continuité sans rupture, de la même façon qu’elles effacent les frontières entre le naturel, le mécanique, l’organique, le vivant et le mort. « Fading » désigne la disparition mais c’est aussi le terme qui convient pour nommer la répétition du cycle vie/destruction/renaissance, que cela concerne les humains, les paysages ou les objets. Microcosme et macrocosme se côtoient pour amplifier cette sensation d’appartenance aux mêmes lois d’évolution, au même « grand tout » plus puissant que l’histoire, quelques soient les fonctions et les destinées de chaque être, animal, machine. Ici, une tache de sang semble couler de la gueule d’une automobile accidentée, là, les paupières closes d’un animal évoquent une clairière dans une forêt immense. Les personnages sont en suspension entre deux états, entre un passé encore présent et un futur certain, comme habités de la tragédie des jours enfuis et irremplaçables. Des corps jouent dans la lumière de l’été et semblent déjà s’enfoncer dans le fleuve. Le clair-obscur d’un intérieur somptueux avale le visage d’une femme solitaire et pensive. La beauté de ces instants est faite du présage de leur disparition proche, elle est celle de l’éphémère à quoi nous devons notre attention avant qu’il ne soit trop tard. CM

Elis Hoffman’s images encompass the constituent parts of perception in an unbroken continuity, just as they efface the frontiers between the natural, the mechanic, the organic, the living and the dead. "Fading" designates a disappearance, but it is also the exact term to describe the repetition of the cycle, life/destruction/rebirth, whether it concerns humans, the land or objects. Microcosm and macrocosm impinge to amplify this sensation of belonging to the same laws of evolution, to the same "universality" more powerful than history, whatever the functions and the destinies of each being, animal or machine. Here, a bloodstain appears to colour the face of a smashed up car, there, the closed eyelids of an animal evoke a clearing in an immense forest. The figures are suspended between two states, between a past still present and a future already defined, as if inhabited by the tragedy of departed and irreplaceable days.

Bodies play in the summer light and seem already to sink under the water.

The chiaroscuro of a sumptuous interior swallows the face of a solitary and thoughtful woman. The beauty of these instants comes from the portent of their imminent disappearance; it is that of the ephemeral that we ought to take notice of before it is too late.

LA VIE DEVANT SOI Le portrait de famille nous est plus que fami-

lier : il est un rite photographique originaire. Le portrait de nu s’est lui aussi beaucoup pratiqué, très tôt. Le portrait de vieilles personnes nues est plus rare. Et celui des générations mêlées dans la même nudité plus rare encore. A ce dernier, il est probable que d’autres images fassent écran dans la mémoire des hommes du XXème siècle, des images qui incarnent la transgression suprême, celle de la confusion des générations infligée par la peur et la violence.

Ici, il est question de vie, d’une vie devant soi. C’est sans doute à ce prix que ce pas photographique peut-être franchi. Ida Jakobs le fait dans des formes particulières : images dramatisées par un éclairage expressionniste, ombres portées, noir et blanc, et jusqu’au liseré noir du deuil. Cette façon radicale de mettre en scène emmène le spectateur du côté du théâtre, ce domaine dont Ida Jakobs elle-même est issue. C’est une façon de convier le spectateur à jouer le jeu d’une situation dont personne n’est dupe, comme le veut le pacte de la représentation. L’essentiel est alors possible : redonner à la personne son droit imprescriptible à être libre d’elle-même, libre non pas en dépit de sa vulnérabilité, mais du fait même de cette vulnérabilité. Cette fragilité supposée restitue à ces corps âgés et graciles une vitalité inattendue, lorsqu’ils portent à bout de bras une jeune femme comme on le ferait avec un enfant, lorsqu’ils soutiennent l’autre dans sa défaillance, ou lorsqu’ils s’adonnent à des jeux sensuels et malicieux. life in front The family portrait is more than familiar to us; it is a

photographic rite from the earliest beginnings. The nude portrait was also an historical reality. Nude portraits of the elderly however are much rarer, and those of several generations implicated in the same nudity, rarer still.

With these latter, it is probable that other images have blurred the memory of twentieth century man, those that personify the supreme transgression, that of the confusion of generations, wreaked by fear and violence.

But here it is a question of life, of a life in front. Undoubtedly it is this that allows this particular photographic step to be taken. Ida Jakobs accomplishes this in a particular way: images dramatised by expressionist-style lighting, deep shadows, use of black and white, and even the black border of mourning. This radical way of staging leads the spectator towards the world of theatre, a domain that Ida Jakobs herself has come from. It is a way to invite the viewer to accept a situation that fools nobody, in the same manner as we accept a stage representation. The essential is thus possible: to give back to someone their imperishable right to be free of themselves, free not despite their vulnerability, but because of it. This supposed fragility renders an unexpected vitality to these aged and graceful bodies, when they carry a young woman at arm’s length, as one would a child, when they comfort another’s weakness, or when they engage in sensual and malicious play.

THE TREATMENT Le monde n’est plus que flux, réseaux et courants

d’air… sauf peut-être en quelques lieux qui semblent figés dans l’histoire médicale et la géographie d’un autre temps. Les spas, les centres de rééducation médicales, en font partie. Ceux que nous montre Alexander Krack sont silencieux et respirent la nostalgie comme de vieilles photographies. Ici, tout est fait pour rassurer et prendre soin, soustraire aux menaces. L’étrangeté n’est jamais très loin, mais elle se départ rarement d’une loufoquerie mélancolique, ce qui la rend prévisible et aimable. Parfois des corps disparaissent, engloutis dans un nuage de vapeur ou une marée de boue, mais rien ne semble troubler la quiétude des pensionnaires.

L’image photographique accorde l’éternité à ceux qui contemplent attentivement des murs ou des écoulements d’eau. Rien ne les distrait, pas même la présence du photographe. On peut supposer que rien de notable n’adviendra avant le moment du repas, si ce n’est la sensation du temps retrouvé. CM

insubstantiality, except perhaps in certain places that seem anchored in the history and geography of another age. Spas, those centres for medical re-education, are among these. The ones that Alexander Franck shows us respire a hushed nostalgia, like old photographs. Here, everything is done to reassure and protect, to shelter from dangers. Strangeness is never very far under the surface, but it rarely strays from a melancholic absurdity, which leaves it predictable and amiable. Occasionally a body disappears in a cloud of steam, or under a sea of mud, but nothing seems to trouble the unruffled tranquillity of the patients. The photographic image bequeaths immortality on those who contemplate attentively the walls or the trickles of water. Nothing distracts them, not even the presence of the photographer. No doubt nothing of any interest is likely to happen before the next meal, unless it is the sensation of time found.

LIBRE MAINTENANT C’est à un étrange huis clos que Pierre Liebaert nous convie. Les modèles qui, répondant à l’annonce qu’il a diffusée, ont souhaité venir poser dans l’intimité d’une chambre close, semblent n’avoir rien tant désiré que cet instant du face à face avec un photographe qu’ils ne connaissaient pas.

Nul autre désir que celui d’être devant lui, d’être contemplés, de se livrer à l’appareil en transgressant une norme à quoi leur vie publique ou leur situation familiale paraît les contraindre.

En posant nus et masqués, en révélant des corps imparfaits aux antipodes de la photographie érotique, ces hommes n’ont eu d’autre dessein que de s’abandonner au regard de l’autre, de s’y soumettre. La photographie qui procédera de la rencontre n’est dès lors plus pour eux qu’un document qui en atteste, une « photographie comme preuve », celle de leur liberté momentanée.

De ce confessionnal burlesque résultent des photographies d’une profonde solitude ; un carnaval triste où ces corps dénudés évoquent plutôt des gisants, le masque les protégeant d’eux-même.

Préférant au divan du psychologue le regard du photographe, ils en ressortent allégés d’un secret révélé à celui qui en demeurera le seul dépositaire.

Pierre Liebaert a retrouvé l’essence de la photographie, de la relation entre le modèle et le photographe, exacerbant ici la notion de pouvoir qu’elle induit en cette soumission désirée.

Pierre Liebaert invites us. The models, who in replying to his advertisement express the desire to pose in the intimacy of a closed room, seem to want nothing so much as this moment face to face with a photographer who is a stranger to them.

No other desire than to be in front of him, to be contemplated, exposing themselves before the camera and transgressing a norm their public life or private situation would seem to impose on them.

By posing naked and masked, in revealing imperfect bodies at total odds with the standards of erotic photography, these men have nothing else in mind but to abandon themselves to the gaze of the other, to submit to it.

The resulting photograph is for them but a document bearing witness to this: a “photograph as proof”, an image of their momentary freedom.

This parodic confessional results in photographs of a great solitude; a sad carnival of naked bodies reminiscent of recumbent statues, the mask protecting them from themselves.

Opting for the gaze of the photographer rather than the psychologist’s couch, they depart unburdened of a secret, revealed to the one who will remain its sole depository. Pierre Liebaert has rediscovered the essence of photography, of the relationship between model and photographer, exacerbating the notion of power it incites in this desired submission.

ÉTUDES Le monde ne cesse pas d’être ce que nos imaginaires voudraient en

faire, quels que soient les démentis que lui inflige la science. La photographie, telle qu’elle est mise en œuvre par Marie Lukasiewicz, se situe précisément sur le fil de ce paradoxe qui fait des images à la fois la preuve de la réalité visible des choses et le lieu de leur investissement imaginaire. Les images photographiques, avant même d’être l’objet d’une manipulation ou d’un trucage numérique, sont toujours intrinsèquement et simultanément un témoignage irréfutable et une fantasmagorie. Cette mise en scène malicieuse parvient à traiter de concert les a priori d’un imaginaire « écologique », ceux qui relèvent de notre rapport à la science, et ceux qui commandent notre rapport aux images. Le jardin urbain est communément considéré comme un « poumon vert », or il s’avère que ses produits sont souvent beaucoup plus pollués que ceux du supermarché. Mais la science viendrait pour démontrer que cette pollution, au-delà d’un certain seuil, serait bénéfique aux humains, photographies à l’appui… On peut alors constater que le pouvoir de persuasion de ces images, ou du moins leur pouvoir d’interrogation de la réalité, vient autant de leur aspect réaliste que de leur puissance poétique. Ces photographies qui montrent des êtres humains en lévitation ou marchant sur l’eau doivent leur plausibilité à leur force poétique, répondent à des désirs profonds parce qu’inatteignables…. Cette série n’est pas seulement une habile remise en question de nos préjugés, mais une belle invitation à la rêverie. CM

Êtudes The World continues to be what our imaginations would have it be, whatever the disavowals science inflicts on it. Photography, such as it is practised by Marie Lukasiewicz, is precisely placed on the edge of this paradox which creates images that are on the one hand the proof of the visible reality of things, and on the other, the place where the imaginary is authorised. The photographic image, before ever submitting to any manipulation or digital interference, is always, intrinsically and simultaneously, an irrefutable witnesses and an illusion. Her mischievous mise en scène manages to treat at one and the same time the postulates of an imaginary 'ecology' which respond to our notions of science, and those which control our relationship with images. The urban garden is generally considered as being a 'green haven', yet it has been shown that its produce often contains more pollutants than that sold in supermarkets. But science comes to the rescue, with photographic support, to show that, above a certain level, this pollution is beneficial for humans. One can see that the power of persuasion of these images, or at least their power to question reality, comes as much from their realism as from their poetic strength.

These photos, which show human beings in levitation, or walking on water owe their plausibility to their poetic force: they gratify the most profound desires precisely because they are unattainable. This series is not just an astute questioning of our prejudices, but an appealing invitation to dream.

La mise en place des colonies juives en Cisjordanie a débuté en 1967 et ne cesse de s’étendre, en dépit de son statut illégal aux yeux de la communauté internationale, de par sa violation de la 4ème convention de Genève. « Facts on the ground » (qui peut se traduire par « le fait accompli ») est une expression diplomatique utilisée pour caractériser la stratégie coloniale israélienne sur les terres palestiniennes occupées, qui consiste à créer de fait une situation qui rende le processus de colonisation irréversible. Aujourd’hui, plus d’un demi-million de colons juifs vivent au-delà de « la ligne verte », dans plus de 100 emplacements officiels, et autant d’avant-postes qui ne sont pas officiellement reconnus mais pourtant tolérés, et parfois même subventionnés par le gouvernement israélien.

Je suis allé en Palestine pour la première fois en 2010 pour documenter les conséquences de l’occupation israélienne sur les territoires et sur la population palestinienne. J’y suis retourné à plusieurs reprises, et j’ai eu l’occasion de constater une véritable « normalisation » du conflit, non pas du fait de la diminution des violences, mais dans l’acceptation de son caractère chronique. Alors que la bande de Gaza voit le conflit se muer en guerre au sens propre du terme, en Cisjordanie la violence a revêtu un aspect bien moins spectaculaire, et de ce fait plus insidieux, plus facilement assimilable. Postes de contrôle, déviations arbitraires et arrestations à tort et à travers ne sont pas le fait d’un état de guerre temporaire, mais le quotidien d’une situation de domination établie et durable.

Pour raconter cette domination routinière, j’ai décidé de m’installer en Cisjordanie en 2013. Pendant un an, j’ai entrepris d’explorer de l’intérieur ces colonies en tentant de franchir les clôtures et les barrières de défense afin de décrire la vie et le décor de ces emplacements. J’ai sillonné la Cisjordanie du nord au sud, visitant plusieurs sites, depuis les colonies officielles qui ressemblent à de petites villes résidentielles jusqu’aux avant-postes constitués de caravanes ou de maisons préfabriquées. J’ai rencontré des colons américains, russes ou venus d’anciennes républiques soviétiques, des européens, mais aussi des éthiopiens et des yéménites. J’ai constaté que seul un petit pourcentage d’entre eux étaient des ultranationalistes violents, ou appartenant à la frange extrémiste. En réalité, la plupart font partie d’une classe moyenne en quête d’une maison à prix abordable et d’une vie « paisible », loin du rythme effréné des villes. Mais comment oublier que ces projets de vie « normalisés » se construisent sur un fond de violence permanente ? Cet espoir de sérénité est-il compatible avec les entrainements militaires, les caméras et les clôtures électriques ?

The construction of the Jewish settlements in the West Bank began in 1967 and has never ceased, despite being recognised as illegal by the international community, in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

“Facts on the ground” is the expression used to characterise the Israeli colonial strategy in the Occupied Palestinian Territories which consists of creating conditions “on the ground” that would make the settlement process irreversible. Today, more than half a million Jewish settlers live beyond the “green line” in more than 100 official settlements and as many outposts which are not officially recognised but are effectively tolerated, if not subsidised, by the Israeli Government.

I went to Palestine for the first time in 2010 to document the consequences of the Israeli occupation on the Territories and on the Palestinian population. I returned a number of times and was able to observe a real “normalisation” of the conflict, not in terms of a reduction in violence, but of an acceptance of its chronic nature. In the Gaza Strip, the conflict continues to lead to situations of war in the most real sense, while in the West Bank, the violence has assumed a less spectacular but therefore more insidious and more easily assimilated character. Checkpoints, forced detours and indiscriminate arrests are now part of a daily life of domination, not of a temporary precariousness of war.

Driven by the need to recount this everyday domination, in 2013 I decided to base myself in the West Bank. For a year, I sought to explore the reality of the settlements from the inside, trying to cross the gates and defensive barriers in order to describe the life and landscape of these places. I travelled the West Bank from north to south, visiting many locations, from official settlements which really are small residential towns, to outposts consisting of just a few caravans or small prefabricated houses. I met settlers from the USA, Russia and the former Soviet Republics, and from Europe, but also those from Ethiopia and Yemen. I noticed that only a small percentage of these settlers belong to ultra-nationalistic, violent and extremist fringes. On the contrary, most of them are part of a middle class in search of a house at an affordable price and the chance to live “in peace� far from the frenetic pace of the city. But can we look at these thousands of people without considering the context of ordinary violence inside which they can guarantee themselves a quiet life? Beyond the military exercises, the cameras and the electric fences, can we really imagine peace?

Dans ce cas précis, les fantômes resteront tels. Ni l’auteur de la lettre ni sa destinaire ne sauront ce qu’il est advenu de l’autre, ne le rencontrera, ne lui adressera la parole. Et de ces quelques phrases dactylographiées, rédigées par un inconnu pour une inconnue, les suppositions et les fantasmes tiendront leur légitimité à se déployer. Aucune image ne peut venir témoigner de la véracité de ce qui s’est passé, si ce n’est celle d’un lieu d’habitation ou d’une localisation géographique.

De cette question entendue dans le secret de ses propres doutes — que serait ma vie si c’était lui, ou elle, que j’avais choisi ? — un conte peut naître. Lacan dit que l’amour, c’est donner ce que l’on n’a pas à quelqu’un qui n’en veut pas, soulignant ainsi que l‘échange amoureux ne tient que d’un impossible à définir, et donc d’un malentendu salutaire. Dans la lettre de Troy, tout est dit qui voudrait éviter les malentendus, apporter des garanties quant au futur qu’il offre à Stefanie. Mais ce que déclenche cette lettre est une succession de fantasmes et d’inquiétudes dans l’esprit de la jeune femme, privée de l’objet de ses pensées. C’est finalement à l’écart des promesses rassurantes, contre elles d’une certaine façon, que s’ouvre l’espace des possibles, l’histoire d’une relation : celle que la photographe construit comme une œuvre, dans la direction de ses propres désirs. It’s thanks to this copious nourishment that they proliferate so fabulously.

Kafka (letter to Milena Jesenska) In this precise case, the phantoms will stay as they are. Neither the author of the letter nor its recipient will ever know what became of the other, won’t meet, and won’t ever speak. And it is from these few typed lines, written by a stranger for a stranger, that the suppositions and the illusions assume their legitimacy. No image can prove the veracity of what took place, unless it is that of a habitation or a geographic location. The question that springs from our most secret doubts, - what would my life have been like if it were he, or she, that I had chosen? – lends itself to the creation of a fable. Lacan says that love is giving something one doesn’t have to someone who doesn’t want it, thus stressing the fact that an amorous exchange defies credible definition, and is necessarily a salutary misunderstanding. In Troy’s letter, everything is expressed in order to avoid misunderstanding and to furnish guarantees for the future he would offer to Stefanie. But in fact the letter sets off a succession of fantasies and worries in the young girl’s mind in the absence of the object of her thoughts. It is finally in keeping a distance from the reassuring promises, in effectively shunning them, that a possibility opens to tell the story of a relationship: the one that the photographer constructs as an œuvre, in function of her own desires.

les moments qui séparent un avant d’un après, et puis ceux dont la durée semble compacte, comme un seuil qui dure et s’éternise. La patience n’est pas la première vertu attachée à l’âge où l’on s‘approche de la vie adulte. L’histoire récente de la Tunisie a laissé penser qu’une page se tournait, mais le temps semble bien long à ceux qui espèrent à la fois l’émancipation pour eux-mêmes et des progrès irréversibles pour leur pays. Car dans cette Tunisie où tout avance plus vite qu’ailleurs, rien n’est encore assuré, consolidé, qui puisse garantir l’avenir de la démocratie et des libertés. D’où cette sensation d’équilibre instable, de temps suspendu entre deux époques et deux mondes, qui émane des photographies de Kamel Moussa.

Elles saisissent, avec une sobriété qui témoigne d’une attention très soutenue aux personnes photographiées, d'instants dont chacun renvoie à l’incertitude de cette période, d’une manière ou d’une autre. Le sens des images n’est jamais infligé, univoque, mais sans cesse à la croisée de plusieurs interprétations, de plusieurs devenirs possibles, à la hauteur de ce qui se joue ici, à ce moment, d’un avenir qui n’est pas seulement celui de la Tunisie, mais sans doute celui d’une grande partie du monde arabe. on the edge In photography, as in life, there are moments which

separate a before from an after, but also those where time becomes as though solid, like a threshold that lasts and lingers on. Patience is not the main virtue we associate with the period preceding adulthood. The recent history of Tunisia led one to believe that a page had turned, but the time seems exceedingly long for those who hoped for emancipation for themselves and definitive progress for their country. For in this Tunisia where everything advances faster than elsewhere, nothing is yet assured or consolidated in a manner to guarantee the future of democracy and civil liberties. Thus this sensation of unstable stability, of time suspended between two epochs and two worlds which emanates from Kamel Moussa’s photos. With a sobriety that demonstrates the degree of attention paid to the persons photographed, they capture instants that in every case convey the incertitude of this period, by one means or another. The sense of the image is never imposed, explicit, but always at the crossroads of several interpretations, of several possible destinies, in line with what is at stake at this moment; a future that is not only that of Tunisia, but also without doubt that of a large part of the Arab world.

THE LIFESAVING MACHINES

Lorsque l’on se sait en danger, les instruments de contrôle mécanisés prennent une importance particulière. La surveillance et le suivi automatisés des données déclenchent les signaux d’alarme qui vont fonder les décisions des humains.

Tout le monde est soulagé lorsque le dispositif technique remplit sa fonction et envoie les signaux d’alerte au moment où le risque surgit. La confiance dans la machine et dans ses processus logiques tient à l’idée que l’être humain lui-même est configuré à l’image d’une machine. Fritz Franz Vogel Quand je suis entré dans cette salle vaste et sombre pour la première fois, au milieu de la nuit, je dus demander au docteur de me laisser quelques instants, le temps de m’accoutumer à l’atmosphère du lieu. C’était étrange, j’avais soudain un sentiment de confiance et de sécurité, et toute crainte avait comme disparu.

Une pensée me traversa alors l’esprit : « quel autre endroit serait plus propice que celui-ci ? ». Tout autour de moi, la pièce bruissait de lumières clignotantes et de la rumeur continue des bips sonores. Un petit groupe de nouveaux-nés étaient installés là. Ils dormaient.

Six mois plus tard, je commençais un travail avec un groupe de photographes autour de ce thème. Les machines qui sauvent les gens, ou qui contribuent à leur bien-être, continuaient de me fasciner.

Mes recherches débutèrent dans un hôpital de Vienne. La vision d’une opération à cœur ouvert ébranla immédiatement mes convictions et mon sentiment de légitimité à pouvoir mener un projet photographique dans un tel endroit. Il s’avéra à cet instant que mes objectifs de départ n’étaient pas encore éclaircis. C’est ainsi que je réorientais ma démarche vers les laboratoires et les unités de production de matériels de soins intensifs, loin des lieux de leur mise en œuvre.

J’ai voulu aborder un sujet délicat sans pour autant montrer la souffrance, ni infliger au spectateur des situations difficilement supportables. Je devais trouver une autre voie. Peu à peu, j’ai commencé à collecter des images de dispositifs médicaux anciens ou contemporains, en les photographiant sur un fond noir, de façon à les extraire de leur contexte d’utilisation, l’objectif étant de focaliser l’attention sur leurs fonctions et sur leur esthétique particulère.

J’ai rencontré des gens dont ces appareils étaient le quotidien : médecins, infirmières, mais également techniciens, ingénieurs et designers qui consacrent toutes leurs compétences au développement de ces systèmes. J’ai vu des prototypes encore à l’étude, des pièces détachées de machines complexes en cours de montage, des appareils démontés pour cause de maintenance, des appareils à dyalise, des respirateurs, des cœurs et des ensembles cœur-poumon artificiels, des pacemakers, des pompes analgésiques, des stents coronaires et d’autres dispositifs.

Cette série a été publiée et exposée à maintes reprises. Tout au long de son parcours se sont révélés des récits de situations, parfois étranges ou inhabituelles, dans lesquelles ces appareils ont joué un rôle déterminant. Des gens ont pu s’ouvrir d’épisodes de leur vie dont ils n’auraient sans doute jamais parlé. Doucement, à leur manière, ces machines continuent de relier les gens.

In a state of insecurity, mechanised instruments of control gain particular significance. The surveillance and inspection of data is fully automated and emits alarm signals, upon which the human being has to make a decision. Everybody is happy when the device fulfils its purpose and sends warning signals when the need arises. The belief in the machine and its logical processing mechanism stems from the idea that the human being itself is a machine.

Fritz Franz Vogel When I entered the large, dark room for the first time in the middle of the night, I had to pause briefly and ask the doctor to give me a moment to allow the serenity of this place to take effect. It was odd; I felt a sense of confidence and security, no trace anymore of fear. The question “If not here, where then?” flashed through my mind. Everywhere there were blinking lights and the hum of individual beeping sounds. A small group of newborn children was sleeping here.

A few months later, I started working on a group of photographs revolving around this topic. The machines that save people’s lives, or at least can improve their wellbeing, fascinated me deeply.My quest began in a hospital in Vienna. Seeing a man’s open chest cavity with the beating heart inside it undermined both my personal conviction and legitimization to create a photographic work here, the objective of which was still totally unclear at the outset.

I thus continued my search in the production facilities and laboratories of manufacturers of intensive care apparatuses — far away from the sites of their employment. I sought to make accessible a taboo topic without depicting any suffering and without compromising people in difficult circumstances. I had to tell the story ina different manner.

Slowly, I began to collect images of historical and contemporary devices, photographed before a dark background — isolated from the environment in which they were used — to direct the attention entirely to their function and their peculiar aesthetics.

I encountered people who dealt with these appliances on a daily basis, doctors, nurses, but also technicians, inventors, and designers who pour their entire knowledge into the development of the devices. I discovered apparatuses, which as prototypes were still at the beginning of their development, individual modules of complex machines on production lines, open devices in a process of maintenance: dialysis machines, respirators, artificial hearts, heart - lung apparatuses, cardiac pacemakers, intrathecal pain pumps, coronary stents, and other devices.

This series of works has been published and exhibited many times. In the process, many odd things have happened, very unusual coincidences, in which these machines played a central role. People opened up and talked about events, which they might normally not speak about. Slowly, the machines started connecting the people.

THE MISSING LINK Ulrike Schmitz n’est pas chercheuse ni scienti-

fique, mais photographe. Ce qui la préoccupe en premier lieu n’est pas la preuve, ni la trace, ni même la vérité, mais ce qui se passe entre les images, dans le horschamps. Ce qui rend une image troublante vit toujours à l’extérieur d’elle-même, dans l’espace où se multiplient à l’infini les énigmes dont l’image est la seule forme visible. Une bonne image nous entraine très loin de ce qu’elle montre et tout proche de nous-même, jusqu’à toucher l’endroit où rien n’est résolu, où tout est question véritable, c’est-à-dire question sans réponse. Dans les interstices de cette série, nous reprenons place dans la chaine sans fin de l’évolution, infimes existences entre ce qui nous a précédé sous le nom d’homme et ce qui nous succèdera sous la même appellation, sans que nous puissions définir ce qu’elle recouvre exactement. Où s’arrête la parenté avec ces êtres réveillés des profondeurs de notre hérédité, avec ceux qui seront hybridés de technologies diverses et manipulés génétiquement ? Elle se perd sans doute là où ils ne sont pas encore troublés par une image, et là où ils ne le seront plus. CM

the missing link Ulrike Schmitz is neither a researcher nor

a scientific, but a photographer. What interests her in the first instance is not a proof, nor a trace, nor even the truth, but what passes between the images, out of frame. That which renders a photograph perturbing always exists outside of itself, in the space where enigmas multiply endlessly, and of which the image is the only visible form. A good image transports us far from what is actually shown, but closer to ourselves, to the point where nothing is resolved, where the real question is posed, that is to say one without an answer. Freud pour savoir que les règles qui régissent les relations à l’intérieur d’une famille sont celles qui fondent la possibilité de la civilisation, de l’humain tout simplement.

C’est pourquoi tout ce qui se passe à l’intérieur de la famille est figure de cette immense nécessité, et c’est pourquoi rien ne nous y sera épargné. La référence au regard qu’Ina Schoenenburg pose dès le titre de sa série vient désigner le lieu où se joue, en premier, la difficile équation de l’amour et de la distance, de la ressemblance et de la différence. Quand il est question de la famille, la notion de sacré n’est jamais bien loin, et chacune des images d’Ina Schoenenburg en porte le poids protecteur et enfermant à la fois. Regards, attitudes et lumières semblent témoigner d’une imploration vers un au-delà à qui demander la force et à qui rendre des comptes. Entrelacs inextricable des culpabilités et des bonnes volontés, la famille nous tend jour après jour le miroir des possibles et des impossibles.

Une famille, c’est l’histoire d’un couple puis celle d’une filiation. La fille-photographe traite avec subtilité chacun de ces registres, replace les visages et les corps dans la chaîne des générations, observe les rôles multiples, successifs et inaltérables. Chaque scène est dense d’un bonheur ou d’une mélancolie, aucune n’oublie la présence de l’autre et la quête difficile de la dignité. CM

to know that the rules that regulate the relationships within a family are the same that create the possibility of civilisation, of humanity itself. That is why everything that happens within a family is a confirmation of this immense necessity, and why nothing is spared us. The reference to the regard that Ina Schoenenburg introduces right from the beginning, in the title to her series, designates the place where, above all, the difficult balance between love and distance, resemblance and difference, is played out. In the case of the family, the notion of the sacred is never far away, and each one of Ina Schoenenburg’s images is heavy both with a sense of protection and of containment. Looks, postures and lighting seem to manifest a supplication to an above and beyond, from whom we seek strength and to whom we are accountable. As an inextricable intermingling of culpability and good intentions, the family forces us, day after day, to face up to possibilities and impossibilities.

A family is first the history of a couple, then that of a lineage. The daughter- photographer treats each of these registers with subtlety, replacing the faces and the bodies into the generational chain, observing the succession of multiple and inalterable roles. Each scene is dense with happiness or melancholy, while the presence of the other and the difficult quest for dignity is never lost sight of.

For a very long time we have known that light passing through a small hole into a dark interior creates an inversed image. This process is that of the camera obscura. Does the image thus formed correspond to the human vision?

Where exactly is the frontier between science and abstraction? Here, various instruments and photographic techniques offer a new vision of astronomy. Pinhole cameras capture changes in the sun’s trajectory over several months. Photograms made using translucent stones and a laser create fantastic images of the cosmos. The variety of techniques lead to questions about the status of the observer in relation to the equipment he uses. The photographic experiences mix with documentary images to reveal the porous frontier between scientific reality and abstraction.

Depuis très longtemps, nous savons que la lumière filtrée à travers un petit trou dans un intérieur obscur produit une image inversée. Ce procédé est celui de la chambre noire.

The government of President Erdogan is committed to an all-out war against the armed resistance of the PPK. In the towns with a majority Kurdish population a group of young revolutionaries, the YGD-H, organise a resistance and proclaim autonomy. These towns live under a curfew and are regularly cut off from the rest of the country by Turkish army blockades. The barricaded populations live to the rhythm of clashes and funerals. La photographe a suivi des équipes de footbal féminin en Palestine. Dans les villages, les camps de réfugiés et les tournois, elles témoignent de la volonté de ces jeunes femmes d’échapper aux déterminismes politiques et de genre qui pèsent sur leurs vies.

Enfants, ma sœur et moi passions une semaine, l’été, dans la maison de notre grand-mère polonaise. Puis plus rien.

25 ans plus tard, je refais la route avec ma mère et ma nièce, qui découvre à son tour cette maison si souvent fantasmée.

Avec ce voyage entre réminiscence et transmission, je continue à interroger l’étrangeté et la fragilité des destinées individuelles.

In Poland, at the beginning of the 1970’s, at 25 years old and still unmarried, she left the family home to build a life in Belgium.

As children my sister and I used to spend a week, in the summer, in our Polish grandmother’s house. And then it all stopped.

25 years later I returned there with my mother and my niece, who discovered for herself this house, so often imagined.

With this journey divided between reminiscence and transmission, I continue to query the strangeness and fragility of individual destinies.
