WEBER Shandwick, New York won the 2024 Brand Experience & Activation Grand Prix with ‘The First Edible Mascot’, created for Pop-Tarts. It was a twist on traditional

sports sponsorships, using a giant Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts mascot for a college football game. At the end of the match, the mascot jumped into a giant toaster before being fed to the winning team. The brand certainly emerged victorious: the company sold 21 million more Pop-Tarts in the eight weeks after the match than the comparable period before. The jurors found the campaign weird, bizarre and uncomfortable, but came round to the fact that it’s also a genius idea.

“This is a brand not taking itself too seriously,” Jury President Anselmo Ramos, creative chairman of Gut, said. “It’s

very stupid, in a really, really good way. It’s meme-ready. You cannot un-see this!”

He also suggested that this award will send out a wider message to creatives.

“I think our industry is very serious right now. There’s a lot of purpose-driven work, which is fine, but it’s time to have more fun,” Ramos said.

“You can do purpose-driven and funny. It’s not either/or.”

Other trends included a rise in reactvertising and use of AI.

Gold Lions were awarded to work from the US (4), Canada, UK, Brazil, Peru, Italy/ Ireland and Ecuador/Argentina/Brazil.

Dentsu sweeps Creative Strategy

‘A PIECE of Me’, entered by Dentsu Creative, Amsterdam on behalf of Netherlands telco KPN, has won the Grand Prix in the Creative Strategy category. ‘A Piece of Me’ saw off four Gold Lions campaigns which Jury President Vita Harris said pushed the eventual winner very hard for the top award. The winning campaign tackled the issue of online shaming by reframing the way society looks at sexting among teens. Instead of attributing blame to the original sender of sexual images, it redirected the problem at people who forward the images — an action that often triggers depression, humiliation and suicide.

Core was the decision to record a song called A Piece of Me with leading Dutch artist Meau. The song was a hit, sparking a national conversation and inspiring an educational campaign and changes to Dutch law. The project has now gone global,

with the song being re-recorded for the UK market.

Harris, who is global chief strategy officer for FCB Global, said: “This piece of work fired on so many cylinders strategically we couldn’t ignore it. The brilliance of the campaign was the insight that non-consensual sharing was the real issue.”

Harris shared several takeaways from the Jury debate, highlighting the fact that the category is a kind of “double entendre. Great strategy leads to creativity, but strategy in itself has to be innovative and creative to push the envelope.” The four Gold Lions hailed from the UK, US, Canada and Netherlands.

LOEWE SETS BENCHMARK FOR LUXURY

THE FIRST ever Luxury & Lifestyle category Grand Prix has gone to ‘Loewe x Suna Fujita’, entered by Loewe, Madrid. The award celebrates a design collaboration between the Spanish luxury fashion house and a unique Japanese ceramics enterprise.

A 360-degree creative partnership, the collaboration saw Suna Fujita motifs used on Loewe products. There were also beautiful activations including a pop-up book and an animation series, which showed the fashion brand pushing the limits of craft. Jury President Charles Georges-Picot, CEO global luxury practice, Publicis Group, Global, said the award recognised a brand that is “smart, elevated and moving at the speed of culture. The team at Loewe respects other cultures, blends traditional craft with contemporary design, respects the people they work with, and pushes the limits in terms of sustainability and diversity and inclusion — all while growing the business.” In its first year,

LePub takes Grand Prix for Philips’ refurb initiative

‘REFURB’, entered by LePub Amsterdam on behalf on Philips, has won the Grand Prix in the Creative Business Transformation category. The game-changing campaign was one of only seven brands to win an award in this hard-fought category. The campaign started with the insight that all returned Christmas gifts end up in landfill, because it is cheaper to make new units than check returns and put them back out to market for sale. Philips decided to flip the script by refurbishing returned items and making them the first products they sold before new ones. They offered these items at a lower price and with a longer guarantee — and saw them sell out in no time.

As a result, Philips is now gearing up to sell refurbed items before new items across the year and in all territories. Jury President Ariana Stolarz, global chief strategy officer, marketing, at Accenture Song, said the Grand Prix would have a profound impact: “It’s good for business, good for the planet — everybody wins. It can be scaled to other industries and raises a question for competitors about what they will do.”

Stolarz said the category demonstrated that circularity could be a win for businesses. “In most cases, the circular economy is talked about as a sustainability trend, when in reality circularity is a smart and bold business move, as

these cases illustrate.”

The jury also awarded a Gold Lion to ‘Cars To Work’, entered by Publicis Conseil on behalf of Renault. The

campaign, which provides a solution for people who live in France’s ‘mobility deserts’, went on to win the Grand Prix in Creative Commerce.

Rethink wins Creative Effectiveness

THE BIGGEST ever year for the Creative Effectiveness category saw Heinz Ketchup secure the Grand Prix. The winning campaign, ‘It Has To Be Heinz’, was entered by Rethink

Toronto and headed off a strong challenge from Dove’s ‘#TurnYourBack’.

The Heinz entry is a multi-faceted campaign that used a range of executions to win back market share

from generic ketchup alternatives. One of the central elements of the campaign involved asking people to ‘draw ketchup’. Without prompting, many of them drew Heinz bottles. These were then used in a major outdoor campaign.

Creative Effectiveness Jury

President Harjot Singh, global chief strategy officer of McCann and McCann Worldgroup, said: “The challenge here was how you turn around a decline in a brand that has been around for 180 years. The way Heinz re-energised its brand is a celebration of originality and quality.”

Singh added that the category is more important than ever, given the ongoing debate about the value

of creativity: “There has never been a greater need to assert the value of creativity with a certainty that removes the need to keep having the conversation about whether marketing is a cost that needs to be managed. It is undeniable that creativity is a superpower and this category is a framework to evaluate it.”

The Creative Effectiveness Lions celebrate the measurable impact of creative work and focuses on past entries to the Cannes Lions. With 306 entries from 36 countries, Singh praised the geographical spread of the winners, drawn from nine countries. There were two Gold Lions for entries from Spain/UK and Argentina.

PUBLICIS Conseil, Paris won the 2024 Creative Commerce Grand Prix for ‘Cars to Work’.

The programme for automotive brand Renault tackled the challenge facing car-less jobseekers in France. Without a car, some jobs are out of reach.Yet without a job, getting a loan in order to buy a car is impossible.

Renault offered 6,000 people cars for free during their three-month trial periods in new jobs, and they only started paying for them — on affordable terms — once their full contract was secured. “It was so different and really moved what we’re defining as ‘creative commerce’ forward,” said Jury President Amy Lanzi, CEO of Digitas North America.“This is really a pretty simple human problem which I thought was beautifully brought forward in this.” Community commerce was one of the strong trends in this year’s Creative Commerce category. However, Lanzi said that had gone beyond basic interpretations to include “not just what you see on a social platform, but more about how we’re using commerce and new business models to galvanise a community around a problem”. Real-time commerce was also a theme, Lanzi added.

Innovation Golds were awarded to work from Brazil (2), the US and Canada.

Klick Health wins Innovation

THIS year’ s Innovation Grand Prix has been awarded to Klick Health, Toronto for ‘Voice 2 Diabetes’, developed for KVI Brave Fund.

The campaign consists of a smartphone app that aims to detect type 2 diabetes simply by analysing a short audio clip of a person’s voice. The app is cheaper and more accessible than existing tests for the condition. Currently in beta, it is estimated that it could save $32.75bn globally, according to its inventors — although the most important impact will be on the lives of the people it helps.

“Imagine the possibilities

we are creating by using your voice to analyse your health,” said Innovation Jury President Diego Machado, global chief creative officer of AKQA.

“Maybe in 10 years’ time, we’re going to look back and go: ‘That was the first time we were using voice for medical diagnoses.’ It opens the door for many others in the category.”

Machado said that a key trend to emerge from the judging process was a shift in how we think about data:

“For the past decade, we have been collecting data from everything — from our phones, from the world. But I feel we are now starting to

understand this data. We have the tools to not just track it, but to understand it in a different way.”

A Gold Lion for Innovation was awarded to Publicis Conseil, Paris for its ‘Three Words’ campaign for AXA.

A New Era Of Social Storytelling In The Age Of Backlash fielded a panel of three successful UK content makers. Final Straw Productions’ Joe Sugg started more than 10 years ago on YouTube, in the days when “you could upload almost anything”. He added: “It was not a job and there was no clear map to where you could get to. Now it’s more professional — not just a tripod in a bedroom, but crews and a big production.”

Addressing the problem of negative responses and what moderator BBC Studios’ Jonelle Awomoyi called the potential “ocean of hate”,

Sugg said that the bigger you become, the greater the audience and the harder it is to please everybody. He added that he never replies to hateful comments.

Comedian and satirist Munya Chawawa pleaded with creatives to trust influencers as they have skills when it comes to curating their own content. They all agreed that collaborations are best when the brands really understand and support influencers and creators, resulting in relationships built on trust.

Grace Keeling — aka podcaster GK Barry — reported that, on her personal platforms, she only endorses products that she actually

uses or likes, “because I’m not a very good liar”. Keeling said she is comfortable saying ‘no’ to a brand that doesn’t suit her, adding that brands should not send her scripts “with stuff that I wouldn’t say”.

While Sugg and Chawawa have established their own production companies, Grace said becoming a producer was not for her. Meanwhile, she stressed that keeping up to date with new apps is important. “Everyone laughed at TikTok at first,” she said, adding that something else will come along. “What we’re doing is really digital marketing. We market ourselves.”

There is so much super brave creativity in there, so it’s great to recognise that by giving the sector its own space.” A Gold Lion was awarded to Aya Nakamura, Haut Niveau, by Lancome, entered by Publicis Luxe, Paris. Other Lions in this inaugural year went to Italy, Brazil, the US, France and Turkey.

TOP CONTENT CREATORS SHARE INSIGHTS FOR NEW ERA OF ENTERTAINMENT

DEFINING what the future of entertainment looks like has never been harder, given the highly fragmented nature of today’s content market. But this was the challenge presented to the panel of Thursday’s Cannes Lions session, A New Era Of Entertainment.

Comedy sketch creator and actor Stephen Ho, represented by Viral Nation Talent, readily admitted that creating content for today’s world is “a tightrope walk”. He added: “There are times when I’m completely wrong and, at that point, you just have to take it on the chin and go back to your initial idea with fresh eyes and fresh ideas. I recently made a video for YouTube Shorts that had clearly not engaged any significant audience. So I re-edited it, cut it down to 60 seconds and added some content that I had previously not

included, and now it’s had millions of views.”

Understanding what the modern audience wants also means knowing where to look for ideas.

“One of my best sources of inspiration is the comments section below Instagram videos,” said Nigerian-American content creator Drea Okeke of Next Level Influence. “But on top of that, I also study my target audience to get clues as to what I could do to hook people who have short attention spans.”

According to CrossCheck Studios founder Josh Richards, timing is everything: “The first three-to-five seconds are extremely important in terms of stopping people scrolling.

“You need to catch their eye from the start — and beautiful shots of something like a beach in the South of France work really well.”

Brands told to ‘bet big’ on a booming Latino market

NUMBERS don’t lie — and when it comes to the Hispanic in Cannes platform, they also tell an increasingly positive story.

“Cannes is getting more

Latino every year,” said Claudia Romo Edelman, founder of We Are All Human Foundation and The Hispanic Star initiative, which works to ad -

vance inclusion, equity and progress for US Hispanics. “Five years ago, we launched our first Cannes Lions side event. This year, there are more than 20. We’re also making our way into the jury rooms. This year, six of the 28 jury presidents are Latino, up from zero last year.”

The growing presence of Latinos in Cannes is not only timely but it also makes sense, given that Hispanics already make up almost 20% of the US population and are on course to reach 30%.

Latino GDP is $3.2tn, meaning that, “if we were a standalone economy, we’d be the fifth largest in the world,” Romo Edelman said. Latinos are also young — 20% of Gen Z are Hispanic — and have money to spend. “Ten years ago,

Why ‘glimmers’ are trending now

WGSN CEO Carla Buzasi explored emerging trends and evolving behaviours in Forecasting 2026: Tomorrow’s Consumer Landscape at the Rotonde stage on Wednesday.

“We have labeled 2026 the great redirection,” she said, speaking afterwards to Lions Daily News. “We live in a tumultuous world and what we’re seeing at the moment is a lot of consumer sentiment around taking more control over situations. We’re forecasting that by 2026 you will see these consumer groups putting a lot of pressure on governments, large organisations and brands to do better and if they don’t then they’ll take those kind of situations into their own hands.”

Another emerging consumer sentiment highlighted in the forecast was ‘glimmers’ — tiny micro-moments of joy. “This is what we’ll see in 2026. They’re looking for more moments of happiness,” Buzasi said. “That is an amazing opportunity for brands to be the ones to create moments of happiness, and this doesn’t need to be fireworks going off. Examples might be that little moment when you sip a great coffee in the morning or pick your cat up and you get a cuddle,” she said. Knitting together all these little moments can make us more resilient and makes us more able to deal with the day-today, but also they can build connections with brands as well, she said. “So a lot

of the advice we were giving is about creating those little moments that a consumer might not necessarily realise as having come from you, but you do it and time and again it builds this

positive relationship.”

Buzasi also predicted a big move back to real-life spaces, pointing to Cannes Lions itself as a great example. “People could be watching these talks on -

Only 5% of US ad spend is targeted at the Hispanic market, with the result that over half of Latinos feel overlooked and marginalised by the big brands and media. “Latinos feel excluded from the US narrative,” Romo Edelman said. Her message to the gr eat and good of advertising gathered this week in Cannes is simple: “It’s time to take a big bet on Latinos, because brands that bet small get small results. Latinos are strong, united, proud and deserve to be taken seriously. We’re a safe bet.”

THE ADVERTISING slogan ‘Because I’m Worth It’ has transformed L’Oreal Paris and become a rallying cry for female empowerment. But it’s unlikely that many people know the story of the remarkable woman who created the phrase: Ilon Specht. L’Oreal has now put that right, by inviting Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot to make a film about the feisty New York creative who rewrote the rules of engagement in the beauty industry. Entitled The Final Cut of Ilon Specht, the 16-minute film was shot in the final few months of Specht’s life and presented to Cannes Lions delegates in a session entitled Celebrating the Radical

Creative Mind behind ‘Because I’m Worth It’.

After the screening of the film, Proudfoot took the stage with Delphine Viguier-Hovasse, global brand president L’Oreal; Charlotte Franceries, McCann Worldwide global business leader of L’Oréal and president of McCann Paris; and actress Andie MacDowell — known around the world as a L’Oréal Paris ambassador. Between them, they explored the legacy of Specht’s work and the rationale for the film.

The decision to make such a raw film, with Proudfoot handed final cut, was an unusual one for a beauty brand. Explaining why, Viguier-Hovasse said “we

wanted to claim back the purpose of our slogan. The risk was that the slogan was becoming a mechanical claim at the end of advertising. We wanted to get back our creation, because we are a feminist brand and it is very important for the business to claim that.”

No one is more synonymous with the phrase than Andie MacDowell, and she offered a moving testament to the impact that the film has made on her. “I have said this line so many times, and I didn’t want people to think of me as vain saying it. I was really comfortable with ‘you’re worth it’ or ‘we’re worth it’, but I still had something in my mind about ‘I’m worth it’.

After watching this film, it’s completely changed how I feel because Ilon was brave enough to stand up for all women, including me.” Proudfoot was given the opportunity to say a final word about his subject — and noted how there is still a long way to go for Specht’s vision of female equality and empowerment to be reached. “I think there was some anger in her at the end — because she had a lot more to give. I don’t think the advertising industry rewarded her in the way that it could have. For every ‘worth it’ she had 10 more taglines in her. If she was here today, her message would be there’s still a lot of work to be done. Right?”

“Take something specific and make it universal”

AGENCY network DDB Worldwide pulled together a talented trio to discuss the nature of creativity and emotional connection in the Wednesday afternoon session What a Feeling – The Unreasonable Impact of Emotion. Headliner Sharon Horgan was joined on the Debussy stage by social media star Alix Traeger and adam&eveDDB chief creative officer Richard Brim, with the panel moderated by Chaka Sobhani, president and global chief creative officer DDB Worldwide.

THE STORY of Esi Eggleston Bracey’s hair tells a much bigger one about the power of great creative — in this case, Dove’s game-changing ‘Real Beauty’ campaign, now in its 20th year and as relevant as it was when Unilever and Ogilvy unleashed it.

Eggleston Bracey, Unilever’s chief growth and m arketing officer, used her own hair to illustrate the pressure on women to conform to society’s ideas of beauty. When she was seven, her hair was a loud and proud afro. By the time she reached college, it had been chemically transformed into a smooth, s traight helmet. “Then, about 25 years ago, I had

an a-ha moment,” she told Wednesday’s Unilever session. “I cut off my chemical hair and went natural. I learned that, when we conform, it makes it even harder for people who don’t fit the norm to be themselves. And I realised I was complicit in this.” Eggleston Bracey embraced her ‘real beauty’ and was soon inspiring other women to do the same through the medium of Dove.

The ‘Real Beauty’ campaign arose from a startling insight: only 2% of women back in 2004 considered themselves beautiful. “Dove committed to change that,” Eggleston Bracey said. But it was a gamble —advertisers

had tried to use everyday women in campaigns before, but without much success. The conclusion was that, while women didn’t want to be bombarded with supermodels, they didn’t find real women aspirational enough to persuade them to buy. “So I asked myself, would women really be motivated by seeing themselves naturally? Thanks to the bravery of the Dove marketers, who were willing to break the norm, the answer was a resounding ‘yes’. Dove changed the game for the industry and the campaign changed the game for Dove. It is now triple the size that it was 20 years ago, with €6bn in sales.”

Writer, actor and producer Horgan talked about the importance of “being able to take something really specific and make it universal. So if I’m making a show about divorce or motherhood, I don’t have to have been divorced or a mother, I just need to relate to what it feels like.” Horgan has enjoyed recent success with Bad Sisters, created by her production company Merman for Apple TV+. She said getting commissioned is just as hard now as it has ever been — and stressed the importance of loving the projects that you are trying to pitch:

“I spend two years making a show, and I don’t want to pass all that time working on something I don’t want to write or perform or edit.” Traeger, who specialises in culinary content, said the key in her world is to be “my most authentic self — and that means showing the messiness of real life. When making a cooking video, I don’t really think of myself as sharing a recipe but sharing a story”. Brim said: “There are so many ways of talking to people, it can get confusing. I think, before you make any decisions, you need to stand back and ask ‘how are we going to make people feel?’ The humanity of what we do has to come first.”
