Foundation stone laid on Jigsaw Building The Bishop of Southampton blessed the foundation stone of the new Jigsaw Building in July in front of Royal Bournemouth Hospital patients and staff, contractors and members of the previous Jigsaw committees.

Robin Scott, former Jigsaw Chairman, and Dr Rachel Hall, Consultant Haematologist, laid the foundation stone before the Rt Reverend Jonathan Frost carried out the blessing.

Dr Hall said: “The laying and

blessing of the foundation stone marks the beginning of the next stage of the Jigsaw Building. It’s extremely exciting to witness the building take shape and we’re looking forward to seeing the walls and roof go on very soon.”

The construction of the new Jigsaw Building is now in full swing. Ground was officially broken in Lindsey Sturman January Fundraising Manager 2014 which was a really positive way to start the year.

The project is going from strength to strength and you can now see the skeleton of the building with the steel structure in place and the floors laid.

It is so exciting to see this fantastic facility come to life.

We know that once completed the new building will be home to two very important units which will provide more space for the rapidly expanding outpatient and day care treatments and ensure patients receive better privacy and dignity.

Jane Stichbury, Trust Chairman, said: “The Jigsaw Building is a really exciting development for the hospital and indeed the community. This build is really evolving and the area looks

very different to how the site looked when the build started earlier in the year.

“Standing by the steel work gives a real feel of the size of the building. The difference it will make to patients needing care in the Women’s Health Unit and oncology and haematology is phenomenal.”

The Jigsaw Building is funded through donations and fundraising from two Jigsaw appeals, as well as NHS investment.

Gold standards for our patients The Jigsaw Building will help thousands of people across Dorset and Hampshire for years to come. Meet Lynne and Katie, two of our supporters who have used the current facilities and find out why this new building is so important.

Lynne Deller My name is Lynne Deller and in June 2013 I went for a routine mammogram after which I was told I would need a biopsy. Cancer was found in two places and a week later I had an appointment with the surgeon, who advised a mastectomy.

I never though this could happen to me and my world suddenly became a very scary place. The operation took place in August using a new technique which is less invasive.

I’m Katie Hoskin and in July 2013 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. The first thing I said when I was told that I had the big ‘C’ was ‘What?’. Cancer was something that happens to other people, not me, I am only 23!

I received my chemotherapy on Ward 10.

At first, the chemo didn’t really affect me and I smugly thought I would cope with this treatment fine. However, it then hit me and I was bedridden for weeks at a time.

My chemo lasted six months even though my cancer had gone half way through the treatment. The staff on Ward 10 were absolutely amazing and I couldn’t have asked for more from them or any better treatment.

I used to get really upset while I was having my chemo as I knew how ill it made me but the nurses were brilliant and really helped me through.

Things went well and I made good progress.

With the support of my family and friends I grew stronger every day and I’m well on the way to full recovery.

The Breast Team was wonderful and I can’t thank them enough for what they have done for me. However, while the care that I received was exceptional, the hospital is in need of a new unit to give women an environment to match the excellent care and treatment they already receive.

The new Women’s Health Unit will offer world class facilities to match the world class service by providing a better environment for patients and staff.

We never know what lies ahead, and this has made me determined to give something back to the people who cared for me so well. I’ve set myself a fundraising goal of £5,000 for the department….what can you do?

I finished my chemo at the beginning of February but I still have to go for follow up appointments every few months so I will use the new unit. I am so pleased that there will be new facilities and a brand new chemotheraphy unit. This is a really tough time for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer. Patients deserve to have the right facilities in the best environment especially when we spend such a big proportion of our time in one place trying to get better.

Twilight Walk success Record numbers turn out for to raise money for new Jigsaw Building

More than 400 fundraisers took part in our Twilight Walk on Friday 6 June to raise money for equipment for the new Women’s Health Unit, which will be situated on the second floor of our new building.

be getting bigger and better each year and it is fantastic that so many people in our community want to get behind the thousands of women that will be treated in the new unit.

The new Women’s Health and Cancer Unit will be a centre of excellence to screen, diagnose and treat patients with breast and gynaecological cancer and for families undergoing complications in early pregnancy, including miscarriages.

How we are continuing to help..

There are lots of new and exciting projects which we are launching and which you can get involved with. As well as continuing to fundraise for additional equipment for the Women’s Health Unit, we are also supporting the arts and environment projects for which there is no NHS budget to support.

Arts and the environment have been proven to aid the recovery of sick patients who are treated in hospital. We have been asked to help raise valuable funds for two projects which will benefit the patients treated in the Jigsaw Building. We have set up two user groups to help with this project; an Arts Group and our Garden Group and we will be running a number events throughout the year which we would love you to support.

Orchard Garden Project

An exciting new ‘Orchard Garden Project’ has been launched to raise money for the landscaped gardens that will benefit patients being treated in the new Jigsaw Building and our renal patients.

These include cancer and blood disorder patients and those being treated in the Women’s Health Unit. We are looking for people and local businesses to support the garden project in any way they can. Maybe your local garden centre will support us this year by making us their charity of the year? Next time you are buying a plant think of us and suggest at the till for the garden centre to support the new garden. You could also help us fundraise, maybe you could host a garden party or afternoon tea. Get in touch to find out more by popping into the office or call us on 01202 704060.

Arts and Environment

The Arts Group has been thinking of amazing ways to make the new units look and feel welcoming and provide a bright and interesting space for our patients and staff. We will be launching a photography competition soon and the winning photos will be used to decorate the unit walls. The competition will be launched on our website, Facebook and Twitter, so please make sure you keep an eye out for it.

Light up the prom - Friday 24 October

We have teamed up with Macmillan Caring Locally to launch a very special event in which you can ‘Light up the Prom’ to remember or celebrate a loved one.

You can buy your special lights for £5 each from the Charity Office and bring it to Bournemouth Pier Approach at 7.30pm where we will collectively switch on our lights and observe a minute silence. This will be followed by a fireworks display.

All the names of those being celebrated or remembered will be entered into a Book of Light held at both the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital chapels.
