Clergy Letter. Dear Parishioners, As I write this letter it is entering the main holiday period when most families with children try to get away, usually abroad, where they can more-or-less guarantee good weather and so give their whole time to each other. In many things we seldom think of others who also benefit, like all in the ‘holiday industry’ hotels and others providing and contributing by earning their living this way; we need other people in every activity in life and these should be remembered and thanked God for. As I write I’m looking at the various colours of the flowers, shrubs and trees in my garden. I also benefit from the garden backing on to the Cemetery and so enjoy the peace and quietness and the trees there. Once again we realise how much our lives benefit in having these things. We are also very fortunate in having as our parish church the beautiful Abbey which Fr. Chris and the Church Wardens open daily from 8.30am to 5.15pm where you will find that same peace and quietness enjoyed by the people since 1138. We all need peace and quietness in our lives. People can either just sit and soak up the atmosphere, or if they need pray will find many aids, like a prayer book or hymn book, which give much to think about. If you wish you can also light a candle either for yourself or another person. There is also at the back of the Church a ‘prayer board’ where you can add the name/s of people who you are concerned about and they will be prayed for at the services. Perhaps the writer of Psalm 46 vv 18 ‘Be still and know that I am God’ may speak to you also as many have found throughout the years. For those taking a holiday I wish you a happy and enjoyable time and safe travelling. With every good wish, Fr. Douglas Clarke (Retired Priest.)

Churchwardens Chat Last month we said that the flagpole is now secure on the tower. The steeplejacks have to, by law, check and report on the condition of roofs etc. It appears that, from a ground inspection, some of the wooden louvres to the belfry appear to need attention. If you look carefully you might be able to spot that some wooden slats are missing. We have, therefore, instructed the steeplejacks to inspect the louvres. This inspection will be carried out by descending on ropes on the outside of the tower and we expect that the masonry will also be examined and the clock dials. We await their report with baited breath. At the time of going to press we do not have a date for the inspection, but we hope to have photos taken and posted on our website. We believe that all the points raised on our planning application to the local authority have been answered. In theory SKDC will be favourable, and that our application to them will be approved. If that is so, then we will have the final piece of information that is needed to be forwarded to the Diocesan Chancellor to enable him to make a decision on our Faculty. The Chancellor might, however ask for additional information............ According to folk lore we are now in the middle of summer, when the weather is warm and dry. If this actually happens then the iron railings to the churchyard, which have had all loose paint and rust removed, will be painted. We wanted to have them completed in time for Bourne in Bloom, but as you know, painting wet iron is a waste of time and money. Merryn and Dudley

Songs, Lyrics, Music & Interpretations I was in hospital recently and a porter took me by wheelchair to the chapel on a Sunday, so that I was able to take Communion and join in with the service. I could have walked, I suppose…. After the service had finished, I made a point of telling the Minister that was probably the only Sunday service that I had been to where I knew all of the hymns (apologies J.S.!). She told me that there were two very good reasons for this. Firstly the Chapel organ was broken, which resulted in secondly, those were the only hymns which she knew on the guitar. “Good enough reason”, I thought. My love of music is no secret. It is rather a large combination of cd’s and two laptops stored with thousands of songs. I’ve written this story to see if hymns and songs would still be as popular today if the words were changed. There is a very good point to this which you will see at the end of this story. When you listen to a particular song or hymn, it’s not only the music that should excite you, but the lyrics also. Here are a few examples………. In 1956 (pre myself), Doris Day sang a song entitled ‘Que Sera Sera’. For those who know this song, it has a very recognisable tune and lyrics. “Whatever will be, will be..” is the second line. “What will I be” and “what lies ahead” are other recognisable words from the song. I don’t believe that anybody can see into the future, apart from what has been written in The Scriptures regarding Jesus to return to us once again. Could we get away with wanting to change the lyrics for this song and if so, would it still be as popular today? Unlikely it is just as popular a song for its music, as it is for the words which describes a woman wanting to see what her future holds. This song was used in various films and was the theme tune to the ‘Doris Day Show’. In 1963 a duet called ‘The Carpenters’ released a song called ‘Close To You’. It went absolutely nowhere in the charts. However, after numerous musicians messed about and tinkered with it, it was re-released in 1970 and still until this day is one of the most recognised songs ever, after peaking at number 1. However, as recognisable as the tune is, this is how I would interpret it………. Karen: “Why do birds suddenly appear, every time, you are near? Just like me, they long to be, close to you”. Paul: “Take a loaf of bread over to the Memorial Gardens and they will be close to you”. Or perhaps, “I get woken up most mornings at about 03:30 by my alarm clock of birds chattering about nonsense

7

outside my window and don’t even get me started on those feathered ones in that great big tree outside my window”! Now would that get to number 1? Of course not. Lastly in 1980, a band called The Jam released a song called ‘Man in the Corner Shop’ on an album called ‘Sound Affects’. To the best of my knowledge, this was never released as a single. It’s about a man who works in the corner shop being jealous of a man who owns a factory. Unbeknown to him, the man who owns the factory is jealous of the man in the corner shop. The song contains the words, “go to Church do the people from the area, all shapes and classes sit and pray together; for here they are all one, for God created all men equal”. Would I change the words of this virtually unknown song? Not a chance! Paul Mason . ******************** It’s all in a Name Anton’s Gout - near Boston, Lincolnshire. Website Report for June Thank you to all those who have looked at the website and given me feedback – and to those who regularly supply information. As I write this (July 17) it's 87 days since I took over as webmaster of www.bourneabbey.org.uk More new pages have been added, including reports on the Let's Celebrate weekend, the laying up of the Royal Naval Association Bourne branch standard and Coun Judy Smith's SKDC chairman's civic service, all illustrated with photographs. The site now has 65 live pages. As well as feedback from our own congregation I am now getting comments from members and ministers from our neighbouring churches. I have also receive several requests to take over running other websites, which I have politely declined. Page visits now total 27,326, an average of 314 per day. If you have any comments or feedback about the website please email me at info@bourneabbey.co.uk This email address can also be used for other enquiries about church matters. New software now means the parish magazine now converts correctly from Publisher to the pdf format used on the website – another improvement for users. I was delighted to be able to help with a family history inquiry received through the website – the kind donation received by the church covers the cost of running the website for 2016. Bourne Abbey Mothers’ Union July Report. This year Mothers’ Union “Celebrates with Faith” 140 years since their founding. Together with a celebration of the Patronal Festival, the Bourne Abbey Church celebrated this event with a display weekend of 15 banners including the banner from Lincoln Cathedral, together with the work of the Mothers’ Union undertaken in the Bourne Branch and our services to the Worldwide Community, Murals were exhibited by the three primary schools, prayer points in Church, refreshments were served in the Church Hall, culminating in Choral Evensong on the Sunday evening. For our July meeting 17 members enjoyed a talk by the Reverend Rachel Thompson. She gave a very interesting and descriptive talk about her “Journey to the Priesthood”. From the time of a young child, she became aware of Jesus Christ through prayer and attending her local Church. Initially she became involved with the Methodist Church, before attending the Church of England. Rachel gave a very detailed account of her family life and the commitment she made in her vocation after she was ordained and the various locations that she has lived, before coming with her family to live in Bourne. Our project for 2016 will be for Baby’s Basket. This is a charitable trust which provides baby and hospital essentials as an attractive gift for mums in the Lincoln area. We are going to make up baby baskets for 0-3 months. Further details from Mrs. Jean Fownes. Please look on the Mothers’ Union Notice board in Church and the Church Hall for items needed or www.babysbasket.org.uk. Jean Fownes has taken photographs of two of the filled Moses baskets that have been distributed on our behalf. These will be displayed on the notice board in the Church Hall We are still supporting Boston Women’s Aid. They have now moved premises, so we will start collecting items again. Mainly toiletry, cleaning materials and towels. N-B- THERE IS NO MEETING IN AUGUST.

TUESDAY AUGUST 9th MARY SUMNER DAY 10.30.a.m. Short Service in Abbey Church Hall commencing at 10.30.a.m. led by Canon D.Staples. followed by Coffee Morning with Raffle, Bring and Buy Stall and Mothers’ Union Cards etc. August 9th to August 13th St.Benedicts Church , Lincoln. Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy Africa Day ‘Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.’ (Proverbs 19:17) Bourne Abbey recently held their Africa Day – an annual Enterprise day when each year group is challenged to raise funds through fun activities for the Bourne based charity ‘Friends of Nyansakia’. We are a UNICEF Rights Respecting School and are always proud to help children around the world who don’t always have the rights to which they are entitled. Our pupils have been firm supporters of Nyansakia for many years and as is the custom on Africa Day, every corner of the school was a hive of activity from Nursery to Year 6. Food seemed to play a big part in the day’s activities alongside art & crafts and musical events. Thanks to the overwhelming enthusiasm and imagination of our pupils and our ever supportive parents and carers a huge amount of money was raised yet again. During the day we were thrilled to hear the long awaited news that the pallet containing clothes, shoes, books and school equipment collected by Bourne Abbey had finally arrived in Nyansakia.

12

received the pallet on 1st June 2016 at 7.45 am and we took photos during unpacking of the 15 boxes. We opened all the boxes before the Chiefs Lucy Akama and Vincent Bosire, School Board of Managements, Nyansakia self-help group members, some members of staff and pupils. We issued them as seen in the photos, many of the dresses or items fitted more to pupils of lower classes. The community, many of whom were women and school teachers, took underwear. The whole Nyansakia community, school pupils, teachers and children’s parents benefitted from the donation. If you were around you could have also realized their appreciations, pupils went home singing and wearing the donated clothes and shoes. I want to register our appreciation, pass our regards to all Nyansakia Friends at Bourne Abbey. God bless you. Ishmael.” It is our privilege to be a part of the wonderful work undertaken by The Friends of Nyansakia. Africa Day enables us to teach the children important life lessons of kindness, humility and compassion. “We

Come on let’s Celebrate! In 2016 Mothers’ Union Members are celebrating their 140th anniversary. Our Founder, Mary Sumner, as the rector’s wife, was concerned about the young mothers, including her own daughter, and their families. She opened her home to all the local young mothers offering them refreshments, talks and prayers and so the Mothers Union was born, growing by 2016 to over 4million members in 83 countries with the Queen as our Patron. Membership is open to everyone who supports our ethos married, unmarried men and women who come together to nurture their faith and live out that faith by service to others. We are all volunteers from the World wide President, Lynn Temby, to the office holders and Branch leaders and members. Our motivation is to reach out to offer “Christian care for Families” regardless of race or creed. We train facilitators for our Parenting Programme worldwide, support our Literacy and numeracy programme in many countries, are involved with the issues affecting Gender based Violence, continue to maintain a high profile in the Bye Buy Childhood campaign lobbying governments and having a voice in the United Nations. Our celebratory Flower Festival at St Benedict’s Church, our operational Centre in the heart of Lincoln’s High Street, will take place from 9th August, Mary Sumner Day, until Saturday 13th August open daily from 10am – 2-30pm. Visit us and find out more about the work of the Mothers’ Union in Lincoln and Overseas. Light refreshments, cards & literature available. Everyone Welcome

Judy Smith’s SKDC Chairman’s Civic Service. On Sunday, July 10th, we were delighted to welcome South Kesteven District Council chairman Councillor Judy Smith members of the district council, civic digitaries from the neighbouring area, including Bourne mayor Councillor Colin Pattison. A congregation of around 150 supported the service. Everyone was welcomed by the Vicar, Fr Chris Atkinson before singing the Introit Hymn "At the Name of Jesus." Fr Peter picked up the theme of the reading by Coun Mrs Smith (Luke 10: 2537) and second hymn “When I needed a neighbour” in his address. The hymn "For the beauty of the earth" was sung while the collection was received. The collection will support the Chairman's charities - South Lincolnshire Blind Society, Parkinsons UK, Scouts and Guides in South Kesteven - and Bourne Abbey Church. Choir member Emily Key then sang “Faure's Pie Jesu” before Fr Chris petitioned for blessing upon Councillor Mrs Smith and the Office of District Council Chairman; the District Councillors, and the Communities they serve. Following The National Anthem, Fr Chris blessed the whole congregation with the words: "May God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the sources of all goodness and growth, pour his blessing upon all things created, and upon those whom he dedicates in service that our gifts and talents may be used to his glory and the welfare of his peoples; And the blessing of God Almighty the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit be upon you and remain with you this day and for ever more." Following the service there was a buffet reception in the Corn Exchange.

End of an era as standard is laid up July 10th – Sea Sunday – marked the end of an era for members of the Royal Naval Association Bourne branch when their standard was laid up in Bourne Abbey Church. At the end of the 10am Holy Communion service, standard bearer John Seymour paraded the standard to the High Altar where it was accepted into the care of the church by Father Chris Atkinson. Sadly the Bourne branch, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2013, is unable to continue operating following the death of several key members, including Nobby Middleton, Chalky White and Bert Johns, and its ageing membership. It was also the end of an era for Mr Seymour who has been standard bearer for the branch since 1976 – 40 years – attending various events and parades, including Remembrance Day parades and services in Bourne. After the service the congregation enjoyed refreshments provided by the Royal Naval Association Bourne branch. Branch members will continue to meet informally.

Recipe of the Month 5 Minute Gazpacho Soup For Summer Gazpacho originates from Spain. It is usually red (containing tomatoes), white (which contains no tomatoes but dried fruits), or green (which is white but contains some spices that make them green). These chilled gazpachos help to keep you chilled in the hot Spanish sunshine and are usually eaten by shepherds, peasants and builders. This is a simple recipe for a red gazpacho. Serves 4 / Prep 5 mins Ingredients 500g tomatoes 1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves Pinch of salt Pinch of pepper 500ml water Cucumber Red onion Croutons Method 1. 2. 3. 4.

Cut up your tomatoes and put them in a large mixing bowl. Set aside and crush the garlic. Add garlic to the tomatoes along with the olive oil, salt and pepper. Add the water and mix. Leave to chill in the fridge for 3 hours and serve with finely chopped cucumber, red onion, tomatoes and croutons.

Many thanks to Lidl Supermarket for this recipe. Paul Mason

Margaret’s Page When I lived in Stamford I used to attend All Saints’ Church. At that time women priests had not been ‘invented’ but we had a deaconess who was one of the best preachers I have ever heard. Her name is Violet Parry and some of you may have known her. Unfortunately ill health forced her to retire and she now lives in a complex for retired clergy near Market Harborough. I still visit her three or four times every summer and catch up with news of mutual friends and visit places of interest nearby. During my last visit she showed me a poem which she had been given by a friend and I asked if I could have a copy of it to put in our magazine. As I write this I am taking the opportunity to thank the members of our social committee and all those who feed us so well at our church social events. We are exceptionally lucky in Bourne to have such a hardworking group of volunteers who help with the catering. I am well aware that most of them need no assistance from Mary Berry as they have been cooking their own delicious recipes for many years. On behalf of all the members of the congregation I would like to express sincere thanks to them all. The Berry Bible I used the Berry Bible To bake a batch of buns, To keep our church doors open, To help in raising funds. Her tray bakes saved a window And scones helped mend a pew. Mary Berry should be made a saint If the powers that be just knew. Her bread and butter pudding At harvest was a treat, And the scones that I attempted Looked good enough to eat. I’m sure that you would find a bake For the Last Supper if you look. Where would our little churches be If the PCCs don’t cook? The Church is one foundation, Its corner stone is cake. Thank you Mary Berry, Our lovely saint of bake. (Poet unknown). Thanks also to all the hard-working husbands who make such charming, helpful waiters at our lunches.

Nature Notes from Bourne Woods- August 2016 The woods can seem quiet in mid-summer, with the occasional sounds of the footsteps of passing dog walkers crunching gravel under wellington boots or the excited chatter of visiting families. Once they have passed listen again and we hear the background drones of the hoverflies and the buzz of the honey bees. Occasionally we hear communication calls keeping the tit families in contact with their members. One of the more noticeable moving creatures, the butterflies, are completely silent as they flutter in unpredictable directions, although generally away from admiring entomologists! It seems very peaceful but if we listen further there may be more going on. The muntjac deer are barking- visitors may confuse their calls with those of distant dogs and high overhead the buzzards may be mewing, perhaps being watched by the young birds still staying close to the nests where they first met the world. When walking the forest paths, note the scents of the honeysuckle and the meadowsweet both particularly notable in the morning and evening. During a recent “Friends walk” (first Saturday of the month) we stopped to compare the fragrant odours. Some preferred the Meadowsweet, others the honeysuckle. Next time you see these perhaps you too could conduct a sniff test and decide which one you prefer? My dog has no such sophistication- she definitely gets more excited by the smell of a mouldy old sandwich! Our next event is a Family Den building competition on Sunday August 28th – places are limited and need to be booked in advance on 07760468052 – no experience is necessary. ******************** Some Ramblings from a Retired Mind. I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer bottles. I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is ‘when you still have something on the ball, but you’re just too tiered to bounce it’.

Bishop of Grantham’s Letter for August 2016. Dear Friends, I hope you will understand when I say that I have been really unsure as to what to write in this letter for August. A number of drafts have ended up ‘on the floor’. How to write something that is appropriate for our times – when the times seem to be so fast moving? Every time I get some words down on paper, something big seems to happen in the world, the latest being the arrival of a new Prime Minister. In the face of such upheaval, what are we to do and to say? Well, I am going to say in this letter what I have been saying to people as I have met them face to face over the past few weeks, and what I usually ask people in more normal times as well: ‘How are you?’ This is a genuine question. I really am interested in the answer. If we can do nothing else in a highly-charged, confusing, fast-moving context, in which emotions are all over the place and hopes and fears are clashing pretty equally, on different subjects, I can at least enquire about how people are feeling, and listen to them: ‘How are you?’ People matter. Everyone. We are all God’s children. We are all flesh and blood with feelings, aspirations and anxieties. My faith tells me this. My understanding and following of Jesus tells me this. So: ‘How are you?’ However you are, whatever you are feeling at this complicated time, please know that you are loved by God. Please also know that my fellow bishops and I are concerned for you and for the people who are on your heart. Sometimes it is difficult to express this concern in ways that really connect – time is limited and I am all too aware of the people for whom I have care and for whom I don’t think I have demonstrated that care in action very well. These people and situations become a matter for my prayer and my sorrow. But, in common with everyone, having made my confession I then need to return to the practical opportunities that I do have to put my care into action. So, during this complicated summer, know that you matter, and join with me, please, in putting care into action. And do feel free to reply to my question, if you choose! May God bless you, and may you have a very good August. Bishop Nicholas
