What rent control could have looked like for Boulder

ince the beginning of this column in March, I’ve focused on rent control—then I pivoted, uncovering the broader history of tenant activism in Boulder.

But in the last month there’ve been two public rallies bringing attention to the issue of rent stabilization/control.

The first rally happened on June 30 on the State Capitol steps in Denver, with some righteous pushback against Gov. Jared Polis because of his veto threat over a provision to limit rent increases on mobile home lots.

And then, Sunday, July 3, Colorado Homes for All coalition had a rally at the State Capitol to get local officials to put pressure on state legislators to reverse the 41-yearold ban on rent control. In record heat, tenants told their stories of crippling and unjustified rent increases and their choice to pay or leave.

So, it’s time to return to a deeper look into the most effective approach there is for curbing out-of-control rents

(notice I didn’t say “solution”). Even rent control proponents acknowledge its limitations in a free market system.

Rent control was meant to limit future rent increases—it generally doesn’t have the ability to bring rents back to more reasonable levels.

My first five columns (March-May 2022) dealt with some of the background of rent control policies, politics and myths. As I mentioned in those earlier columns, the Renters Rights Project (RRP), in early 1981, started a petition to get “moderate rent control” on the Boulder ballot. It immediately ignited massive and predictable opposition from landlords and their allies, resulting in a statewide ban on rent control a few months later.

So, what is moderate rent control? When many people think of rent control, they think of New York City or what was termed “restrictive” rent control. This kind of rent control, developed shortly after WWI, was needed given the acute housing shortage and rent gouging that had developed. Rent strikes throughout NYC led to the Emergency Rent Laws of 1920. Those laws expired after nine years, see UNREPENTANT TENANT Page 8

GHOST RIDERS It’s almost 7 a.m. on Sunday and I’m stopped at a red light at 95th and Dillion Road in Louisville with seven other idling vehicles, for the green turning arrows servicing ghost riders in either lane. Do you sit and wait for an empty traffic light lane to hold you back while wasting your money and polluting the air at the highest rate a vehicle can? Or make the adult decision to go? ... If clear of armed tax collectors, I go every time!

The absurdity of this careless phenomenon caused by local municipalities is frustrating at best. They are essentially helping those who pass through their community to become part of the problem by increasing regional haze, respiratory health issues and global climate change, from the unnecessary idling at misdirected traffic signals.

Upon researching data to back up my argument, it’s estimated that approximately 300 four-cylinder cars idling for 30 seconds will burn one gallon of gas, which produces about 20 pounds of greenhouse gas.

The light I mentioned earlier in Louisville stops actual vehicles for ghost riders all day long with about a 30-second turn arrow. I don’t have the time or patience to sit there and count how many resources are being wasted every hour, let alone every day and year. Louisville is not alone. Lafayette along 287, oh boy. And if you stop and look, you will see it happening everywhere, all the time.

The simple truth is an idling vehicle pollutes more than a moving one and the traffic light technology of the 21st century is not being reviewed, programmed or managed thoroughly enough for different times of the day, to have the positive effect that they are capable of and intended to have.

Quick fix, why not have an over‐ride to flashing yellow arrows when no traffic exists in a turning lane?

Are we so lazy that we cannot make these basic driving decisions for ourselves? The technology of convenience has created a sense of entitlement with the result of excess and waste; we need to change our priorities if we want a better future.

SWEET MISINFORMATION I take offense to the idea presented in “Cooking hack: Vodka of tea sweeteners” from the July 7 issue of Boulder Weekly. Just kidding/Boulder “STAND BACK AND STAND BY” Former president Donald Trump was acquitted by the Senate in February 2021 in relationship to his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Part of the argument in favor of convicting him was that he had used the word “fight” when encouraging his supporters to protest at the Capitol that day. At the time his defenders pointed out that people often use that word without referring to physical violence, and they’re right. But Trump still bears a lot of responsibility for what happened. In addition to everything that has been exposed by the special House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot, his use of the word “fight” needs to be considered in connection with two things. First, he painted a picture of America being in grave peril if the results of the election were not overturned. Second, he has a history of encouraging political violence.

During the 2016 election campaign, there were at least a couple times when he encouraged his supporters to physically attack protesters at his rallies. There’s also his statement directed at the Proud Boys during the first 2020 Presidential Debate: “stand back and stand by.” The proud boys are all about political violence and they were at the Capitol that day. Trump had spent months lying about the election and we shouldn’t be surprised that his followers did what they did on Jan. 6 when he said “fight.”

ty-corner at Broadway and University on the Hill and a new “South Campus” expansion equal in size to its existing campus, the University clearly displays a burgeoning corporate ambition that has more to do with business and profit than the education of its students. And, thus far, the “makers and shakers” of the city are thrilled with these plans, the impact of which on the quality for life of Boulder citizens, congestion, traffic, and pollution, has been of little concern to the City Council. Boulder once had a certain aura of being quirky, outside the mainstream, somewhat exotic in Middle America all because of the presence of the University. “The People’s Republic of Boulder” and “Baghdad by the Flatirons” were appellations given at different times. The Board of Regents, elected statewide and until the last election Republican dominated, chafed at all this “liberal” tendency but was unable to turn the tide until the selection of Bruce Benson, successful oil man and Party fundraiser, as President despite his having no expertise in education and only a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology.

His selling point was fundraising, and diminishing state funding had left the University in financial straits.

Conservatives had been calling for universities to be run as businesses for decades. Under Benson’s tenure, the bottom line became the focus of all operations, including sports. The business plan was simple: money had to be made, and he was successful in putting CU on firm financial ground, with a current operating budget of $2.1 billion for the Boulder campus alone ($5.5 billion systemwide). Administrative costs continue to rise, but its expansion ambitions remain flush with cash. Nonetheless, tuition and fees for students continue to climb and gender inequality in faculty salaries, while recently lessened, remains the norm. All in all, be it questions of education, the well being of students, faculty, and the people of Boulder, or the reality of climate change, persisting drought, and the necessity of carbon reduction, CU’s answer has been Lily Tomlin’s classic line, “We don’t care. We don’t have to.” It shows an arrogance that should shock everyone.

The Oath Keeper’s son—Part I

Oath Keepers chief Stewart Rhodes’ son explains why he left ‘daddy Trump’ and the ‘far-right’ cult

M

y name is Dakota Adams.

Unfortunately, I am Oath Keeper Stewart Rhodes’ son. And unfortunately for both of us, I may be relevant to you.

It is now undeniable that radicalization and the draw of right-wing extremist thought is a significant problem facing the nation, perhaps a fatal crisis, and in this context, there’s a lot of interest in the stories of people who came back from the right-wing fringe. I have only my niche experience to offer from a very odd life. But I’ve been told that this might be valuable to those interested in how I went from a teenage militiaman who believed in Pizzagate to casting off my birth name of Dakota Stewart Rhodes and joining BLM and pro-choice protests.

If tracing the stumbling, fumbling path to independent thought taken by the son of an insurrectionist militia leader contains a valuable lesson, I have a responsibility to show you all. If there’s a chance my story will be of any help to millions of people who have lost family and friends to rightwing cult behavior, then I have an obligation to tell it.

So, this is how I left the far right.

To begin with, I wasn’t always what most people think of when they picture the current crop of “Alt Rite” frat bros and angry bitter incels (I was never that bitter).

My political life started in the Libertarian right explosion that was the 2008 Ron Paul campaign, caught as a child in the wake of my father’s ambition, even before Oath Keepers, as he made a name for himself as a campaign organizer. Stewart asserted authority by banking off his law degree, military background, and former staff position at the office of Paul himself.

I gained political consciousness attending sign-making parties with all the weirdos and misfits who felt out of place in the mainstream GOP, even some crossover Democrats from the Occupy Wall Street crowd, but still undeniably steeped in rightwing ideology. There was something that would echo later in a much worse year: The belief that only bringing in an outsider candidate, even a crazy one, could fix the system.

Implicit in everything was the sense that even the GOP, with its authoritarian tendencies and bloodthirsty enthusiasm for the global war on terror, was inherently more closely aligned with “us” enlightened souls than anyone on the left. By our ideology, even left Libertarians would inevitably bring about socialism by introducing clear tools of statism like progressive taxation, environmental BOULDER COUNTY’S INDEPENDENT VOICE

protection, and dreaded death-panel socialized healthcare, setting off the brief half-life of all socialist government systems as they actively decayed into communism. Left Anarchists would simply skip the intermediary and go to full communism immediately, ironically instituting the most government-ful of all governments. Socialism, after all, is when the government does stuff, the more stuff the more socialist, with communism as its natural endpoint.

The GOP, being fervently against socialism, must therefore be on the lighter end of the govern-

ment authority spectrum, despite its decades-long love affair with militarized police and the surveillance state. In events, connections, strategy, and policy, the Libertarian right would continue to align itself with big government conservatives as a holding action against Democrats. More charitably, it could have been considered an attempt to convert the GOP from the inside.

Of course, Ron Paul would lose. In the ensuing panic and dissolution of the nascent Liberty Movement, my father would seize the time and place to found Oath Keepers and redirect the considerable grassroots energy that was now aimless and directionless, playing on his particular background to secure a niche. Oath Keepers would broadcast a message of hope, at least in the early years, and retain something of the emotional core of the activist outsider politics spirit that had given the Ron Paul following its animus. Under the surface, Stewart Rhodes was already playing to the fears of conservatives about the incoming Obama administration, particularly on guns, alluding to FEMA camp l

conspiracy theories and riding the bleak outlook of preppers and doomsdayers to success.

The sense that the Ron Paul campaign was the last best hope for avoiding economic collapse and New World Order takeover, prophesied by survivalists nationwide for decades on end, was prevalent.

Now that the last hope was shattered, the die was irreversibly cast.

This, too, would reverberate later.

My own childhood politics of course grew harder and more fringe in my survivalist adolescence, as Oath Keepers transformed into Stewart’s roving private army and income machine behind the veterans’ org facade, but the drift into further anti-government belief wasn’t quite what would set me up to fall for the Cult of Number 45 later on. Neither were the anonymous internet boards filled with outcasts and edge cases, efficiently compromised by white supremacist recruiters, the strongest influence, although the endless MAGA memes that would pour through that vector certainly made an impact. I had carried on the activist spirit of the sign parties for a while, evangelizing Ron Paul’s “real” message, the one the media kept you from hearing, and the good words of Bo Gritz and Ayn Rand to the online masses (that last with some caveats, even then).

Over time, the sheer weight of depression and stress from the constant looming civil war and fall of society ground me down, and outlasting Bernie Bros in online arguments lost its luster with everything else. I spent my remaining adolescence with one foot in apocalypse training and one foot in basement-dwelling NEET-dom, burying myself in the internet to avoid having to think about The Coming End and taking shelter in web novels and anime when life became unbearable.

The Coming End ruled my life, variously called The Collapse, The Crash, the End of Days (for the religious), and sometimes in our family wryly referred to as the “a-Cop-alypse.” It was an economic crash, a nuclear war, a mass terrorist attack, a natural disaster, any event that would end civil society and reduce the United States to a war of all against all as the starving masses turned on each other, local warlords with looted military hardware rising to fill the power vacuum. All of this was of course to be engineered by nefarious forces within the government, taking advantage of a naturally occurring crisis causing one directly to create a situation so bad that most people would beg for a totalitarian see OATH KEEPERS Page 12 11

rule that would restore order to the chaos.

The government faking a biological terrorist attack by a hostile nation like Iran, a ‘false flag’ attack, to create domestic chaos and start a convenient war simultaneously was a popular scenario. The cause varied with the headlines and the times, fallout from Fukushima or a North Korean EMP attack as examples, but the belief remained concrete and it was always at most 18 months away.

Some welcomed The Collapse as a chance to start society over again, others harbored juvenile fantasies of their survivalism paying off in social status and sexual conquest when the fall of civilization made them superior to the starving ‘nu-males,’ others simply believed in it as an inevitability to be weathered, or as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Some, like me, lived in unending fear.

I knew my family was not ready to survive a collapse, not under Stewart’s leadership.

By the time Trump became the clear front-runner in the Republican primary, the end-of-days stress cycle I lived in had worn me down, leaving me primed for cult recruitment. I was beginning to lose my all-encompassing fear of The End after it had repeatedly failed to materialize, just enough to have cognitive space left for deep, bitter anger. My entire life, the perceived actions of political elites and policymakers had been cause for household panic, from domestic to international events that were nonetheless evidence of the New World Order at work.

The Muslim Brotherhood in 2012 Egypt being implicated in a rocket attack on Israel was somehow blamed on shadowy NWO power brokers, working to promote war, and obviously a domino that would lead to us struggling to survive the violent U.S. balkanization through fuzzy logic I cannot recall. Every political move large and small by The Establishment was a source of terror and despair when filtered through the paranoid lens I’d been raised with, and I’d had enough.

My belief in the end of days and sinister conspiracies had waned, but the emotional mark had not. It was a weak point that would make me vulnerable to exploitation.

I had missed many online pipelines to well-known brands of right-wing extremism at this point, largely because I was thoroughly a child of the Constitutionalist Militia Movement and indoctrinated against competing right-wing ideologies.

I’d been trained to see conspiracies and psychological warfare in every shadow, and so I’d clocked the Nazi recruiting on messageboards instantly for the manipulation it was. I’d been raised in a cult of fanatical American Exceptionalism, and genuinely believed that the Constitutional Militia Movement was an anti-racist force unfairly maligned by liberal media (until, years down the line, I didn’t). The general racism of the unmoderated dark corners of the internet washed over me with no effect except warping my sense of humor.

I somehow ended up avoiding misogyny despite all efforts by my father and his circle. So, when early GamerGate turned from YouTubers like TotalBiscuit actually talking about ethical games journalism to become a firestorm of entitled sexually frustrated hatred, I stepped off the bandwagon.

By the time Trump hit the campaign trail, I had finally burnt out enough on Militia Ideology and The Coming End to be open to more mainstream populist politics. In my increasing doubts about whether The Collapse was really ever coming and the movement as a whole, I had lost the ideological core of my early life. Without fervent belief in the apocalypse and the militia’s role in it, I had nothing to anchor myself to except a vague emotional idea of American patriotism. I was finally one of Steve Bannon’s “rootless white males” and ready to be swept up in the next vast current.

Like a lot of people, for many different reasons, I felt robbed of the generally secure middle-class life that pop culture had implicitly promised. In the propaganda storm around Trump, I saw a glimmer of hope that things might be fixed, and certainly a chance to strike back at the Establishment that I blamed for the awful state of the country and my life.

I didn’t really see Trump as a savior, I saw him as the Bigly-est brick the American people could pick up and throw through the White House windows.

After a lifetime of fearing the machinations of political machines too vast to comprehend, I saw their churning efforts terminate in the likes of Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, feeling simultaneously that this end state could not possibly be the work of a rational unified conspiracy and thoroughly fucking insulted. l

So I would pick Trump’s ugly, bulbous head up on election day and hurl the bastard as far as I could to demonstrate how thoroughly done We the People were with a process that consistently returned the blandest of the worst choices.

This was the first step in the memes getting to my psyche, the rabid Trump enthusiasm overriding my initial skepticism of Trump on constitutionalist grounds as my anger at the “the Establishment” made it easy to get swept along with the crowd.

I saw the early beta versions of QAnon come and go, numerous online handles claiming to be anonymous insiders from the Secret Service, FBI, and NSA leaking big news about upcoming arrests and secret espionage operations. Stewart bought into some, in particular a claim that the Clinton server contained mass amounts of damning information that could cause societal instability and foreign wars if released, and so had to be handled carefully. In the midst of this, the Q handle would emerge with its now distinctive style of vague allusions and almost Socratic style of rhetorical questions. Q would go on to become a mass cultural phenomenon and perhaps the founding of the next American religious movement, but it failed to appeal to me or catch my interest at the time.

I was of course deaf to the many Trump scandals, largely because I was increasingly insulated in Trump fan circles that massively downplayed them or simply ignored them. I wouldn’t see any of the clips of Trump blatantly lusting after his daughter, the Epstein party allegations, or the Russian mob connections for years to come. The Russia allegations, if anything, drove me further into the flabby yellow arms of Cult 45. I’d imbibed enough fear of Russian soldiers in UN blue being imported to keep the peace in post-collapse America in my life and I was done with it. My fury at John McCain for seeming to be seeking another Cold War knew no bounds; I was absolutely through with any kind of generational struggle or conflict. I just wanted to live my life, and if the system presented me with a selection of warmongers and a single untested clown, I was going for that red nose for no other reason than to shock the carnival barker who set my choices.

There was, of course, the chance that he might be surprisingly competent and fix everything, or at least not suck too badly. As a crass reality show star, I figured that he might just host some kind of bizarre media telethon from the Oval Office for four years straight and let his generally competent, if corporate stooge-heavy, cabinet run the country reasonably well. All he had to do was not start a major foreign war, keep ISIS down, avoid collapsing the economy, and he could be hailed as the next Reagan by the GOP forever (I as yet had no concept of what a bad president Reagan himself had been).

In my mind, the worst case was four years of W. Bush-esque gaffes bringing about a new golden age for Saturday Night Live parodies, before he left the White House to comfortably rule American mass media for the rest of his life.

If the economy could just not crash for a few years, if I could avoid being drafted to fight in a conflict in Ukraine that I then barely understood and largely didn’t care about, I might be able to get out of the shadow of Oath Keepers and the Fatherlord and have my own life.

Through 4chan and Reddit’s Trump communities, I was immersed in the Podesta email scandal, the conspiracy theories connecting Clinton lawyers to Central American pedophiles and executives for the Amber Alert system. They were entertaining, sometimes as outlandish as claims that Trump was a time traveler or had force field technology invented by Nikolai Tesla, and more and more they seemed oddly plausible. They fed the shining hope aspect of Trump’s appeal, beginning to paint every event as a move on a chess board that would bring down corrupt political conspiracies and big business. The outlandish and mundane theories existed together, interlinked, on a spectrum that allowed the reader to pick up whatever beliefs suited them and still be meshed within a generally like-minded online community.

The energy and enthusiasm became intoxicating in a way I hadn’t felt since the Paul campaign.

THE LANGUAGE OF STOKE: Samantha Soriano became a professional freeride mountain biker when she was a student at Columbine High School.

S

amantha Soriano had her eye on Teton Gravity Research (TGR) movies. Making it into one of the high-energy sports films was an aspiration the Littleton local wrote down in her journal years ago. It was a bucket-list goal, she says—something she hoped to eventually achieve through her freeride mountain biking.

But for the first few years of her professional career, she was focused on racing above all else.

She wanted to be just like her idol: Tahnée Seagrave, the professional British downhill racer.

“I wanted to be the American version of her,” Soriano says. “[All of my] time was consumed by training. And [I was] always thinking, ‘OK, next race, next race, next race.’”

Soriano started riding professinoally at the age of 16. Now she’s 21, and over those five short years she’s competed in just about every style the sport has to offer. At Columbine High School she raced BMX. When that got old, she switched to cross-country enduro racing, competing in long rides over mountainous trails. Then she fell in love with downhill racing because it combined her BMX skills with mountain biking.

After a shoulder surgery in 2019, though, Soriano was feeling burned out on the racing circuit.

She’d competed around the world, with some of the best racers on the planet and it was wearing her out.

“When you’re at a race, you’re like, go, go, go for four days. You’ve got trackwork and you’ve got practice and you’ve got qualifying and then finals day,” she says.

“Turning pro when I was 16 was amazing . . . But it was really hard. Being that young, I fried myself.”

So she switched gears. She started freeride

“This whole thing feels super surreal,” she says.

Before she could even wrap her head around the opportunity, she was out in the Utah desert, surrounded by cameras and a film crew, shredding with more professional female riders than she’d ever ridden with before.

Esperanto is shot all around the world.

From Spain to Ecuador, Zambia, Japan, Jackson Hole, and, of course, Utah—where Soriano was ripping freeride trails alongside Chelsea Kimball, Blake Hansen, Brook Anderson, Hannah Bergemann, and Sophie Gregory for their segment.

It was an enriching experience, Soriano says. Not just because she was riding beside women older and younger than her (Sophie Gregory is just 11-yearsold), and not just because they were in such an iconic mountain biking mecca, but because they were all learning from one another, inspiring each other, speaking a common dialect. “[Mountain] biking for us is a universal language,” Soriano says. A universal language that everyone who watches Esperanto can understand without sharing a single thing in common—the language of stoke.

The film opens with a gut-turning freeride segment in the Catalonia region of Spain, with Andreu Lacondeguy alongside Kurt Sorge, and Brage Vestavik charging through forests and launching off of massive jumps. Next, Esperanto takes us to Ecuador to follow Rene Arevalo, Johny Salido, Carson Storch, and Nico Vink as they assault ancient trails in the Andes Mountains. Then to Japan, for some

mountain biking, focusing her energy on making content with her sponsors, and building a social media presence around her riding. It was a choice that’s paying off for the young up-and-coming rider.

One day last year, she answered a phone call from a number she didn’t recognize. It was TGR. The extreme sports media company was making a new film called Esperanto, named after a language created by a Polish-Jewish doctor in 1887. Esperanto (the language) was meant to break down barriers between cultures, and allow people from any background or age group to communicate and express themselves—not unlike mountain biking, the film posits.

TGR was reaching out to Soriano because they wanted her to ride for a segment in the film.

“I was kind of dumbfounded. I was like, ‘No way. This is a prank. Like, you’re not asking me to do this,’” she recalls. But it wasn’t a prank. They were asking Soriano to do it.

Boulder Weekly Market of Tomomi Nishikubo’s masterful urban freeriding. Then to Zambia, then to Jackson Hole, and eventually coming full circle back to Spain. Each and every segment is an onslaught of mind-bending freeride fearlessness, with some of the biggest names in the sport.

Soriano’s segment (between Zambia and Japan) was shot in southern Utah in a place called Virgin, where she and the other female freeriders put their skills on full display.

“When you think of freeride [mountain biking], you think of Utah,” Soriano says. “In particular, you think of Virgin, Utah.”

With its red rock mesas, formations, chutes, hills, ridges, gullies and cliffs, Virgin is a playground for freeride mountain bikers. But it’s not for the faint of heart.

The steepness of the trails, the height of the cliff drops, the gnarly rock features and the size of the jumps are all extreme.

None of that was new to Soriano. But the film crew and process of making a movie was.

“When you’re filming, you have so many opportunities to get things right,” she says. “I think filming is a lot more enjoyable because you can mess up and be like, ‘OK, I can try again’ . . . It’s way less scary to ride in front of a camera than a clock.”

They shot on location for 10 days, Soriano says; crushing ridges, sending kickers, throwing no-handers, bar-turning and moto-whipping their bikes over the jaw-dropping scenery.

The best part for Soriano, though, wasn’t necessarily the world-class terrain. It was simply riding with women whose ages spanned a decade in either

direction of her’s, and helping each other grow as riders with every single run.

“Just being able to ride with a group of very talented girls and also having the opportunity to help [each other] conquer fears—I think that was for sure my favorite part of the whole entire week,” she says. “Having a group of people that resonated with you [so much] better than anyone else just feels really good.”

Soriano says PETER JAMISON it was bizarre watching herself on screen at the premiere of Esperanto in Denver last month.

“I had accomplished one of my goals that [I’d had] for many years,” she says. “Honestly, it was pretty emotional.”

While she was signing posters after the show, a young girl came up to get her signature. Soriano says nobody really knows anything about her yet, but this aspiring freeride biker did—and she was a big fan. Soriano realized at that moment that she was becoming what she’d once lionized. Just as she’d aspired to become the American version of Tahnée Seagrave, she’s now inspiring younger female riders to become their generation’s Sam Soriano.

“I am now kind of creating a path for myself. People are looking up to me,” she says. “That was just so surreal . . . I definitely have cried over this, like, happy tears.”

Clara Nulty’s ‘Palimpsest’ bears details of life past and present

A

tall, white canvas leans against the wall in Clara Nulty’s painting studio.It looks nearly blank, but there’s a pattern of dots, not unlike a cribbage board. At the bottom, a white pantyliner is stained red with period blood. On closer inspection, the holes of the canvas match the pattern on the pantyliner. The work is a palimpsest, painted in layers, on layers of paper and canvas—often layered with meaning.

The piece was Nulty’s way of addressing anxieties about motherhood and infertility.

“To me, this painting is deeply anxious. If I want to be pregnant, getting my period is a bad thing,” she says. “But when people came into my studio, seeing it brought out a deep sense of relief.”

In a way, other people’s reactions serve to recontextualize the work for her, she says, adding another layer.

Making art is part of Nulty’s family history—a personal palimpsest—but she humbly refutes being any sort of child prodigy.

“To me, art is such a basic pathway to communication, especially painting and drawing—the urge to make images is a really basic human instinct,” Nulty says.

“So I think most kids have an impulse to make marks on something and it usually means something to them, even if it’s hard to see from the outside. I don’t think I was anything special in that regard.”

Still, her father draws and paints with watercolors, she says. Making art was totally normal and routine in her home, but a youthful perfectionist streak nearly took her off that creative path. In middle school, Nulty felt self-conscious and discouraged by her own perceived lack of progress, so she stopped trying for a while.

“I assumed I just wasn’t that good at it. I’ve always been interested in making something representational, and having that thing be descriptive and accurate on some level,” she explains. “Those were hard years to be wired that way, and especially learning to draw, nothing comes out the way you want it.”

Nulty’s mother encouraged her to take art foundation classes in high school, she says, and that teacher encouraged her further. She jokingly calls herself a studio rat,

Goed Zuur brings fine food, beer and jazz to Five Points

A

nthony Lopiccolo is from Detroit, but as a jazz lover he appreciates the music’s deep history in the Five Points area of Denver.

That made 2801 Welton St., a building that dates back to 1884, an auspicious place for Lopiccolo to open Goed Zuur, a restaurant that focuses on sour and lambic beers, meet-and-cheese boards and—since last fall—free concerts by some of Denver’s best jazz musicians.

“The history in Five Points was a huge reason why I wanted to open in the neighborhood,” Lopiccolo says. “It’s two-fold, really—because of the jazz history here and me always having been passionate about jazz music, especially because of how awesome the jazz scene is in Detroit, and listening to jazz with my dad growing up. Opening in Denver’s only historical African American neighborhood was also a big thing for me. Everything was either a bar or a café or closed, and I wanted to try to do something new.”

Goed Zuur, which means “good acid” in Dutch, was inspired by a trip Lopiccolo took to Belgium.

It has a full menu on top of its lauded meet-and-cheese boards, and the restaurant also features organic wines, a cocktail menu and, of course, incredible beers you’re unlikely “There isn’t any place like what we have,” says Lopiccolo, who boasts that Goed Zuur is the only tap house that focuses solely on sour/lambic beers. “It’s really the Belgian style that was the big inspiration for our tap list, and that’s what we’ve been driving for.”

Zuur is more well-known outside Colorado than in the Denver area, and won Imbibe Magazine’s 2018 award for Best Beer Bar in America. Goed Zuur creates collaboration beers with a number of breweries, and puts out an acid jazz series every year for the Five Points Jazz Festival. Lopiccolo says the restaurant also creates collaboration cheeses with Vermont-based Parish Hill Creamery, and generally tries “to be as involved as we can with producers we’re passionate about.”

Rudy often plays Goed Zuur’s jazz nights himself, and he’s having a blast bringing in not only some of the best Denver jazz musicians (Gabe Mervine, Hunter JOHN SPALVINS Roberts, Taylor Clay, etc.) but heavyweights from Europe and New York City, including Downbeat award-winner Rico Jones.

Rudy and Lopiccolo both say that building a reputation for a Belgium-inspired bar, restaurant and jazz club in Five Points has been slow-going and, at times, awkward, but they’re committed to showing the neighborhood Goed Zuur is something special.

“I think if some of the older folks that have lived in the neighborhood a long time actually gave us a chance they could see how great of a jazz thing we’ve started,” Lopiccolo insists. “We don’t really get people in the neighborhood that come in for the music, which seems silly because it’s free; it’s there. DV8 Distillery hosts techno-focused dance party to raise funds for displaced Ukrainian women and children

L

ike most adults, Olga Kozhar spends her days at work and carves out time for her hobbies when she can. Her work involves post-doctoral research in microbiology and genetics at Colorado State University, and her hobbies include making music and DJing.

But on Feb. 24, Kozhar’s life changed forever. Now she starts every day by checking in with her family in Ukraine and reading the latest updates from the frontlines. Russia’s invasion has upset the lives of millions of Ukrainians, including those abroad.

“It’s impossible to switch it off or take a break, because my people are there,” Kozhar says.

Ukrainian revolution and subsequent war along the border with Russia. She has effort in Ukraine by donating to grassroots charities and fundraisers, like Dance for Ukraine.

Organized by Kozhar, Dance for Ukraine will take place at Boulder’s DV8

Remembering the legacy of James Caan with ‘Thief’

he man is silent. He removes a welder’s helmet and ON THE BILL: reveals his face: tired, soaked in sweat and soot. E

very October I make Concord grape juice and then seal it away in jars. I hoard these sweet vessels until the following summer, when I mix a chilled beverage called spicy grape juice.

sip of spicy grape juice. I was an 8-year-old city boy, visiting friends deep in the Massachusetts countryside. One hot day our pack of kids came into the house thirsty. Joan, their mom, emptied jars of grape juice and bubbly into a pitcher of ice, and poured the mixture into glasses on the big dark dining room table. It hit the spot like a jump in the lake.

I wondered if this diet had something to do with the fact that Joan’s kids were as tough as superheroes. They would jump off the roof for fun, and cover long distances through the woods (sometimes popping out near a gas station that sold candy).

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, Joan’s simple drink harnessed multiple forces into that unusually satisfying drink.

It contained plenty of those elusive sugar molecules, thanks to that sweet grape juice. Thanks to the carbonic acid, bubbly has a sour taste and that harmonizes with the sour component

Years later I found myself with a Concord grape plant of my own, and, as luck had it, a home seltzer maker. Suddenly, I had all the spicy grape juice I cared to drink, which is a uniquely satisfying feeling. Nowadays, I use Joan’s mix as a base for exploring more complex combinations of sweet, sour and pain.

My current spicy grape juice recipe includes both lemon and grapefruit juices as well, which add extra shades of tartness to complement the grape juice and carbonic like sour and like bubbles, softens with a little sweetness. I like to add spearmint, ARI LEVAUX

Carbonated water—aka seltzer or bubbly—contains carbonic acid, which triggers receptors on the taste buds that detect mustard and horseradish. This produces the distinct spicy taste of bubbly. For some reason, a little pain in the water makes it more drinkable (for some people anyway). The action is similar to how a dash of spicy hot sauce can make a taco more delicious. LaCroix, the beverage company, has leveraged the resulting endorphin rush into drinks that feel like soda pop, even when completely

unsweetened.

It was unusual to consume something so completely satisfying out of Joan’s kitchen. Her style of cooking

he U.S. is facing a national housing supply shortage. According to some estimates, the country needs more than 3.5 million more houses in order to meet soaring demand—at a time when materials, shipping and construction costs are higher than they’ve ever been. Concurrently, climate change is encroaching from all sides and without a means to reduce the massive environmental footprint that construction creates, the U.S. is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

While the project potential in this idea; using printed hempcrete buildings to combat some of the most serious problems facing our society. And the U.S. government evidently sees a lot awarded a $3.8 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Harnessing Emissions into Structures Taking Inputs from the Atmosphere (HESTIA) program.

Luckily, a new project from researchers at Texas A&M University is taking aim at those problems. Using a single, elegant, green technology they believe could help simultaneously reduce the cost of building, curb emissions from construction, and build homes that save energy.

And they’re going to do it all using hemp.

“Hempcrete is a very attractive [material],” Petros Sideris, an assistant professor in Texas A&M’s Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, says. “It’s a great opportunity at reducing, or at least changing, the predictions of our environmental footprint.”

gy’s HESTIA program aims to develop “building materials and whole-building designs from a wide range of potential feedstocks ... that are net carbon negative on a life-cycle basis by using atmospheric CO2 in the production process.”

In Sidris’ case at A&M, the feedstock they’re using is industrial hemp stalks, which grow out of the ground and can absorb up to 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare (which is a more estry). Concrete, on the other hand,

other materials in a kiln and produces roughly .9 pounds of CO2 for every pound made. To put that differential in perspective: 30 billion tons of concrete is used annually around the world. If that math abides, that’s 54 trillion pounds of CO2 emitted for global concrete production every year.

Hempcrete is made using powdered hemp, hemp hurds (pulverized stalks), lime, sand and water and mixing it into a slurry. Sideris’ research project will combine that with 3D-printing technology that will print the walls of the structure one horizontal layer at a time, Sideris explains. of using a 3D printer to print homes or buildings. Others have done it before, just using regular concrete mixes.

“The very exciting thing about 3D printing as a process is it’s quite environmentally friendly because when you look at traditional construction it means a lot of waste,” Sideris says. The concrete comes in big boxes, on pallets, and a lot of it gets wasted using traditional concrete pouring methods.

By comparison, a 3D printer is extremely exact.

“It’s very neat,” he says. “You place concrete only at the locations where you need to.”

On top of that, preliminary tests have shown that damping acoustic properties, and has extremely good thermal insulation properties. That means that in the summertime hempcrete structures will stay cool, and in the winter they’ll hold warmth, saving energy on air conditioning and heating (and saving homeowners money).

It does have drawbacks, Sideris admits. Hempcrete isn’t as strong as regular concrete, and so it will require additional materials like steel or wood for internal framing more expensive. According to Colleen Keahey Lanier, executive director of the Hemp Industries Association, at current prices it could add up to $100,000 to the cost of building a house, depending on its size.

“Generally, whatever the standard price is for buildper-square-foot, add a minimum of $60 to that,” Lanier told Realtor.com. “So where it may cost an average of $120 per square foot on a traditional build, a hempcrete structure may cost $180 per square foot or more.”

For now, however, Sideris is hopeful that cost will come down with time.

“At this point the material is on the expensive side,” he says. “[But it’s] expensive because there is no industry to use it [yet].”

As with any new technology or material, cost is high at the onset and decreases as people adopt it on a wide enough scale. And because 3D printed hempcrete sits at the intersection of sustainability and resilience, Sideris thinks it’s worth getting excited about. “[This] is a step in the right direction of building resiliently and sustainably at the same time,” he says.

“I think it has great potential. That’s why we’re all very excited.”
