H

ow can the United States achieve lasting greatness?

I claim that the best way of gaining really durable eminence is by dismantling our pernicious military-industrial complex and becoming a comprehensive environment conservator. Evidence about climate change, reviewed below, provides strong support for this contention.

The Paris Climate Accords (PCA) is an international treaty on climate change adopted at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference held near Paris, France. The Accords have been accepted by 193 countries.

The United States left the PCA under Trump but returned in 2021 under Biden. Iran is the only major carbon emitter that has not accepted the Paris Climate Accords.

The purpose of PCA is to keep mean global temperatures well below 2 degrees centigrade above pre-industrial levels. Preferably, mean global temperatures would be limited to 1.5 degrees centigrade above preindustrial levels, but this would require global carbon emissions to be cut in half by 2030. A related goal of PCA is to achieve global

net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The Paris Climate Accords require that each country set carbon emission targets and report regularly on progress toward reaching these targets.

Every five years new and more stringent emissions should be established. The Accords also encourage developed (i.e. rich) countries to provide financial support to developing countries enabling the latter to reach their emissions targets.

Environmentalists have criticized the PCA on several grounds. First, countries are free to set whatever emissions targets they wish. Second, there is no enforcement mechanism requiring that countries actually meet their emission targets. Third, the targets actually chosen are entirely insufficient for reaching even the 2 degree centigrade objective. Supporters of the PCA acknowledge the validity of these criticisms but interpret the Accords as a valuable base from which progress can be made.

Every two years the United Nations Environment Program, in collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute, publishes a comprehensive Production Gap Report that “tracks the discrepancy between governments’ planned fossil fuel production and global production levels consistent see JUST ECONOMICS Page 6

with limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C or 2 degrees C.” The report for 2021, based on a collaboration of more than 40 climate experts, is not encouraging, to put it mildly.

The report finds that governments plan to produce more than twice the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than consistent with 1.5 degree Celsius warming and 45% more than consistent with 2 degree warming. The report also finds that, since the COVID-19 pandemic, the world’s largest economies (G20 countries) have given more funding to fossil fuels than to the production of clean energy. In fact, the current fossil fuel production plans of the world’s countries are considerably higher than the fossil fuel production implied by their PCA pledges.

These distressing production gaps appear dramatically in the graph above taken from the 2021 Production Gap Report. The graph contains four lines projecting fossil fuel production between now and 2040. The purple line indicates fossil fuel production consistent with 1.5 degrees C warming. The green line indicates fossil fuel production consistent with 2 degrees C warming. The brown line indicates fossil fuel production implied by PCA pledges. The red line indicates fossil fuel production implied by the current plans of the 193 countries that have accepted the Paris Climate Accords.

The graph depicts three major production gaps. The gap between the red and brown lines shows the projected difference between what countries promised to do and what they are actually doing. This gap is currently about 3% of global carbon emissions (GCE) and is projected to grow slowly over the next 30 years. The gap between the red and green lines indicates the difference between the fossil fuel production that countries actually plan on doing and what would be required to keep warming below 2 degrees C. This gap 6

is growing rapidly and by 2040 is projected to be 45% of current GCE. The third gap, between countries plans (red line) and GCE required to keep global warming within 1.5 degrees C (purple line), is even more enormous.

By 2040 it is projected to be 65% of current GCE. The 2021 Production Gap Report emphasizes that the climate change situation is perilous but not hopeless.

It also emphasizes that “governments have a primary role to play in closing the production gap and ensuring that the transition away from fossil fuels is just equitable.” Unfortunately, no major country has taken bold leadership in addressing the climate crisis.

The actions of our own country are hardly exemplary. Although President Biden announced the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the United States is currently the world’s largest producer of oil and gas and is second (in energy terms) in coal. Our government has encouraged expansion of oil and gas production in many ways.

This includes support for research and development of fracking technologies and promotion of fossil fuel infrastructure such as pipelines. Our present production path will not even approach zero carbon emissions by 2050.

If our country really desires lasting greatness, it should abandon the futile and destructive effort to be the global military and political hegemon.

Instead, it should endeavor to become a global conservator, showing how a large country could comprehensively reorganize itself to address the climate emergency. It will require radical and sometimes painful changes in American society. However, the rewards for such a massive environmental transformation would be enormous. The United States would earn the profound admiration and gratitude of future generations, and American society would gain a long and healthy duration.

ast month, I read a Daily Camera piece entitled “Limelight Hotel is a Game Changer” (Dec. 19 2021). Written by real estate consultant Sean Maher, the piece celebrates the upcoming 250-key Limelight Hotel set for construction on Boulder’s University Hill. I frequently ride and run along the Broadway path past its construction site, which extends from University to Pleasant. Like Maher, I am a real estate consultant, but unlike him, I see nothing to celebrate and a lot to mourn.

I’ll confess a sentimental bias against the hotel. I moved to Boulder in 1992, and for years, the stone building at the corner housed the Boulder Mountaineer. I was a dirtbag bike shop guy , working enough to ride and travel , but I was aware of the dirtbag mountaineer shop guy, who worked enough to climb and travel; the Mountaineer and Neptune were their main hubs. Perhaps I should stop longing for days when Boulder’s real estate was affordable enough to support multiple mountaineer shops and their dirtbag minions, and embrace the 2025 Northwest Colorado Tax Professional summit, or whatever will be staying at the $300/night rooms at the Limelight.

My sentimentality distracts me from the ugliness of the building at 1325 Broadway. All I see are glorious summer nights hanging out with friends, downing massive $5 plates of fried rice and $5 pitchers while looking at the best views in town from K’s China’s rooftop. That building also conjures memories of cheap eggs and biscuits at Dot’s and cheaper pizza at Fatty J’s.

Oh well. Now the kids will have 25,000 square feet of meeting space!

Likewise, when others see sketchy restaurants near the corner of Pleasant and Broadway, I recall Tra Lings, whose dollar scoops kept me alive for a couple years as a CU undergrad.

The upshot is Limelight will have a 15,000-square-foot ballroom.

My lack of enthusiasm isn’t purely sentimental, however. As a real estate consultant with a focus on climate l

adaptation and housing affordability, the project is a disaster. Boulder’s already-bad car congestion, which has increased in recent years due to high rates of single-occupancy trips and inbound workers, will be exacerbated by the Limelight’s workers, guests, conference goers and their cars.

That’s assuming anyone uses the hotel, since it’s built around shaky markets. COVID severely impacted Boulder hotel occupancy rates, and existing hotels continue to recover while adapting to the new ways the world is conducting business. Virtual work, and particularly low-cost, low-carbon virtual conferences are replacing the live conferences the Limelight is built to accommodate.

This is a good thing. A 2021 Nature article found virtual events significantly reduce conference carbon footprints —because having 200 people fly from all over the world to and from a conference for mini bacchanals is not an especially low carbon affair (go figure). The article also found virtual conferences are a boon for promoting diversity, since virtual attendance is not limited to people who can afford airfare and accommodations, or populations who can be away from their duties as caretakers.

Lastly, replacing a latticework of small, several immigrant-owned businesses with a project orchestrated by billions-backed institutions (CU) and a hotel conglomerate is an opposite action for developing an equitable, resilient local economy. The hotel will widen the rift between the folks who live, use, work, and run Boulder, and the nameless corporate entities (and their mouthpieces) who set the city’s priorities and enjoy its bounty. No one I know in Boulder wants this hotel, but apparently, like CU South, community and even industry authority take backstage to wanton expansion, which, in 2022 Boulder, clearly takes the limelight.

One former CU student’s experience with sexual harassment highlights the financial costs of victimhood and the evolution of Title IX

B

y her own account, Kristin Vietti is stubborn— for the last 13 years, she’s refused to pay the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) the thousands of dollars remaining on her balance since she left school without receiving her diploma.

“As you get older, you learn how to stand up for yourself, and when I was 27 I was an idiot. I mean, I’m an idiot now, but back then I didn’t know anything,” says Vietti, 41, who now lives outside the state. “Just dealing with the shame and trauma that’s associated... it’s taken me this long to understand that I literally did nothing wrong. I literally did nothing to deserve this.”

In September 2006, while an undergraduate, Vietti was a victim of sexual harassment by a tenured professor in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, according to an investigation report by CU’s Office of Discrimination and Harassment (ODH), provided to Boulder Weekly by Vietti.

The investigation into her case drug out over a year, and led Vietti to hire an attorney and file a restraining order against the professor—at a personal cost of nearly $5,000, according to the report. (In interviews and emails, Vietti says her legal fees topped out at nearly $10,000.)

She dropped her classes in the fall 2006 semester after the professor admitted he wanted their relationship to be more than professional (during questioning by ODH, he told investigators he had “feelings” for Vietti, “the kind you don’t get rid of ”). She quit a $17-an-hour job in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and took a lower paying position in the college to avoid him, as he was her supervisor. She eventually switched majors. Once, on her

way to a test in the year after the close of the investigation, Vietti says she spotted the professor before she exited her car, soiled herself out of fear, and drove home.

“The problem with the ODH was that there wasn’t really anything that they could do,” Vietti says. “That’s really where I guess my problem with paying starts, because I had to pay to get this man to let me live my life without pooping my pants.”

Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or education program that receives funding from the federal government, which includes a legal obligation to help survivors of sexual violence or misconduct continue their education.

That means providing tutors, dorm changes, and mental health support to those who report misconduct, regardless of whether they seek disciplinary action against the offender.

In Vietti’s case, CU seems to have done everything required of an institution when there is a violation of the sexual harassment policy: University employees who were privy to the situation informed ODH before even Vietti did; the professor was notified that if he did not stop contacting Vietti, he would be in violation of CU’s sexual harassment policy; when he continued to contact Vietti, ODH launched a full investigation, provided Vietti with a victim advocate who she says “counseled me continuously,” and referred her to the lawyer who would help her file the restraining order; and, at the subsequent hearing for the order, ODH employees working on Vietti’s case testified on her behalf.

But Vietti, like many victims of sexual harassment, struggled to find her footing after the investigation, and by 2009 she left the university.

“I dropped my classes there towards the end,” she says. “I l

mean, like I said, it was a nightmare. And so I just sorta washed out of school because I couldn’t… I couldn’t deal.”

She’s far from alone in her inability to cope with sexual harassment. In a 2014 op-ed for The Washington Post, civil rights attorney Alexandra Brodsky writes that one in five of the nearly 10 million women enrolled in college—as well as a number of their male classmates—will be sexually assaulted during their academic careers. (Current research by Brookings and the National Center for Education Statistics [NCES] confirms these numbers are still valid.)

“Let’s conservatively estimate that only one in 50 campus survivors loses one semester of tuition,” which, in 2011-12, cost an average of $5,150, Brodsky writes. “That puts a rough estimation of the cost of sexual violence to the students of a single national graduating class at nearly $2 billion.”

Nearly double that estimate for today’s average cost of tuition, which NCES averaged at $9,400 in 2019–20.

That’s $4 billion—with a B. Boulder’s Hutchinson Black and Cook (HBC) law firm has become a nationally known name in Title IX legislation, having represented a number of sexual assault victims in high-profile cases in Florida, Oregon, and at home in Boulder. HBC attorney John Clune says that while Title IX doesn’t explicitly require schools to refund money to students who drop classes or take time off after sexual misconduct, “common sense would suggest that they should.”

“In a situation like [Vietti’s], if I represented the client, I’d be looking at whether or not, contractually, they (CU) owe her that money back because she’s getting harassed by one of their own professors; it’s one of their own professors that has chased her, essentially, out of her education that semester. There should be some sort of contractual obligation, implied contract, that she didn’t get the benefit of the money that was billed, so she shouldn’t have to pay it.”

But Vietti didn’t seek legal counsel beyond the restraining order she filed, and today she’s past the statute of limitations. In 2007, she just wanted to move on with her life. In the report filed by CU, Vietti—referred to as Complantaint—told investigators “that what she really wanted was for Respondent,” the professor, “to stop calling her and stop trying to contact her.

“Complantaint said that she does not want to ruin Respondent’s life, but what he did continues to cause problems for her, such as putting her through the effort of having to go to court to protect herself and having to hire an attorney.”

Clune, who looked over the report on Vietti’s sexual harassment investigation, says 2007 “was a different time” in regards to CU and their handling of sexual harassment.

“They were embroiled in a federal lawsuit with my law firm over (sexual misconduct from members of) the football program, and CU has made significant,

significant strides—massive—since then,” Clune says.

“I don’t know that they would be in this situation again.

Their findings are pretty serious in this case. The behavior of the professor was absolutely outrageous. And they found that—they found that [his behavior] created this hostile environment. Her leaving [was] not something that they were willing to excuse from a financial standpoint, even though today anyone at CU would say, ‘That’s perfectly understandable, and we’re going to try to support the student.’”

In the conclusion of the sexual harassment investigation, the authors find, “without question that Respondent sexually harassed Complantaint in violation of the [Sexual Harassment] Policy. As a tenured professor at UCB, Respondent is in a position of trust and has a heightened responsibility to behave in a professional manner. Respondent’s repeated attempts to contact Complantaint after she told him not to contact her are absolutely unaccept-

CU Boulder, have evolved the approach to addressing sexual misconduct over time, including implementations of Title IX changes,” Sorensen says of Title’s IX’s evolution in the university culture over the last 15 years. “Some of those changes” at CU, he writes, “include findings by a neutral hearing officer separate from university investigators and providing cost-free advisors for both parties involved in live cross-examination.”

“Our community should know that we take allegations of sexual misconduct, such as harassment or assault, seriously, and those found responsible are held accountable,” Sorensen wrote.

Whether it’s sexual harassment or assault, says Janine D’Anniballe, director of Boulder’s sexual violence resource center Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA), the impact is devestating.

“The psychological and physiological impact of sexual harassment is very similar to other forms of sexual assault,” she says, with physical and psychological symptoms, including guilt and shame.

Which Vietti can attest to.

After all these years, she still grapples with how much the harassment upended her life.

“If somebody’s saying, ‘I’m listening,’ [maybe my story] sounds absolutely fucking ridiculous, because the man didn’t rape me,” Vietti says. “He almost did quote-unquote ‘nothing.’ I feel like I got off really easy, and I know that I’m not the worst case scenario. And I say that with a lot of bitterness because this was not easy. I’ve only pooped my pants once in my life. For me to walk in as a student, [as] an employee of the university, and be told, ‘You know what? We’ve got this guy’s back, so you need to find your own team to be on,’ I dealt with that. And did it for my own safety, based on the recommendations of the people that I was referred to by that department.”

Vietti says she owes CU $6,000. “Not paying this money is only hurting me,” she says. She’s planning to start school (not CU) again soon, and knows she’ll need to pay her fees in order to get her transcripts.

“Respondent said that seeing Complantaint in court and her actions there sent a clear message to him,” the investigators wrote in the report on Vietti’s case. “Respondent described Complantaint as a ‘troubled girl’ and said he feels sorry for her.”

He still works at CU today.

able. Moreover, the fact that Respondent continued to contact Complantaint after he was previously advised by Complantaint, ODH, and his department chair on multiple occasions to refrain from contacting Complantaint is a significant aggravating factor in assessing Respondent’s conduct.”

CU declined to comment on Vietti’s specific experience, citing privacy laws, but Andrew Sorensen, a spokesperson for CU’s strategic media relations, did provide emailed responses around general Title IX policy and case resolution.

Since Vietti’s time at CU, the university has replaced the Office of Discrimination and Harassment with the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) in addressing sexual misconduct. OIEC, Sorensen explains, works with the Office of Victim Assistance, “which provides confidential support and advocacy for complainants in addition to OIEC’s support measures and case resolution processes.”

In 2016, OIEC added the Support & Safety Measures branch to provide resources to people who have experienced abuse or other prohibited behavior.

“These resources can range from supporting retroactive withdrawals, tuition reimbursement, class switches, changes in housing accommodations and other services,” Sorensen wrote.

Burrowing bodies

W

ith a click, all color vanishes. Darkness rushes in, swallowing everything whole, my eyelids and surroundings no longer different but blended with the inkyblack cold. Outside the air had dropped somewhere below freezing, but inside the cave we’d hollowed out of snow, our drinking water stays liquid, our body heat trapped by trillions of snowflakes domed around us.

For a long second, the night stretches and fills the cave, and somehow keeps going further, beyond what our headlamps and firelight could reach, settling somewhere deep, prompting the body and brain to suddenly inquire within night’s depth: Where does me stop and other begin?

I reach my hand out into space and find the glassy, compressed snow suspended above my face; my fingers run across its ripples, reading the icy alphabet. “Goodnight” I whisper to my two friends, snuggled with me like sardines; there is no echo, only frozen water to absorb our sounds. Their breathing evens as I lay awake, staring into the nothingness, or is it the back of my eyelids? I can no longer tell.

“Words are not real. I think we have forgotten this,” writer Paul Kingsnorth notes in his essay “The Language of the Master,” which spotlights language as complicit in ecocide for its role in driving humans away from nature, toward symbols and proxies. “In a culture that increasingly deals with abstracts, it is a dangerous form of forgetting.”

But there is nothing abstract about a body burrowed in snow. I feel into my feet, pull my knees closer to my chest, smelling the sweat I’d shed while digging out the cave. Now wrapped in layers of dry wool and down feathers, inside this slope below Beacon Peak, a few miles west of Nederland, I’m warm enough. Using probes meant for body-finding in avalanches, we’d poked air holes through the cave’s ceiling so we don’t suffocate ourselves inhaling solely what we exhale. It amazes me, the structural physics of snow, how it—the amalgamation of two slippery substances, frozen water and air—can hold shape when you need it to. I take a deep breath, my heart rises and falls, again and again.

It’s clear that something separates us humans from everything else that inhabits the planet— something that’s created a culture of “us” versus

Falling asleep in a snow cave is the perfect time to contemplate humanity

between my cultured and my primal selves—to remember that connections between humans and ecology exist, to help rewrite or at least revisit parts of the Homo sapiens’ narrative now 300,000 years in the making.

Inside the cave, as the night wears on, my ears begin picking up outside sounds; my mind spins with the wind through evergreen branches, joining soft animal coos, passing through the silver hue of moon.

“Life is not a problem to be solved. It is a state to be dwelt in,” Kingsnorth writes; it’s his way of coming closer to his primitive self, of shedding language, “learning to stop and be silent,” learning to breathe with his heart and not just his lungs.

With such spirit, Kingsnorth refutes the question “What is to be done?” about the faults of human development and language, about our propensities for hierarchy, for violence. There’s nothing to “do,” nothing to fix, he writes, because the whole system is fundamentally broken: “Language no longer serves the part of the brain which ... ‘believes but does not know.’ It serves the part which ‘knows but does not believe.’ Our words no longer serve wholeness. They serve fragmentation, and we have used them to justify the building of a fragmented world.”

How do we become whole again? Kingsnorth pushes us to think again beyond human tendencies: “That means myth, religion, practical expertise founded upon physical work, rooted imagery, holistic conceptions of life, communication with nonhuman beings, poetry, complexity, questions that do not have answers, questions which are not questions at all.”

Struggling to employ language while communicating about climate change, Rush, writing from a riverbank, recounts watching “the water’s edge wobble. We wonder what to call the feeling of losing the places that shaped us, a word for the way our very lives drive them further and further into the past.”

I wonder, too: How am I, a Homo sapien living by way of language, supposed to exist on this planet? Such circular queries—questions that do not have answers, questions which are not questions at all—Kingsnorth writes, “Like Earth and its seasons, they never stop turning.”

And as such, it’s morning again. Into the cave light comes crawling.

“them,” or “an orthodoxy of subject and object,” Kingsnorth writes. Over time, Homo sapiens have wedged a distance both abstract and physical between themselves and other species, and that distance makes environmental destruction possible.

“What is the source of this separation?”

Kingsnorth chews this question, for it’s equally clear that Homo sapiens were not always abstracted or removed from their ecologies; trace back our habits in North America, and like bears and rabbits, we too once lived in caves of snow. Only in returning to one, having the darkness collapse the otherness into sameness around me, did I face our separateness from nature in new light: an illusion as bright as money, national borders, and language itself.

“Why do we think we are different anyway?”

Kingsnorth challenges. “Is it because we are the only species that writes essays?”

Philosophers generally agree that what differentiates humans from other beings is twofold: our use of language, as Kingsnorth harps, and also our ability to perceive time outside the present—we ruminate on the past and contemplate the future. But, if we understand language as more than linguistic, then we honor how fungi communicate with trees, how fingers read icy ridges of snow, how symbiosis occurs between species. And, I think, who can argue against the phenomena of generational migration, or the calculated growth and hibernation patterns of animals, insects and plants, as not merely mysterious but definite forms of time perception?

I’m reminded of climate-change reporter Elizabeth Rush in her essay “Atlas with Shifting Edges,” as she leaves for a backpacking trip with her father to “discover again what we already know: that nothing separated us from the environment in the first place.”

For this, too, is why I adventure: to close the gap l

After a decade of performing live, 16-year-old singer/songwriter Emelise set to record first LP

W

hen Emelise Munoz was young—younger than she is now—passersby would hear her busking down the street, drawn by her deep, soulful voice, surprised to find a child behind the sound.

But while she enjoys singing, guitar is her real passion.

“I don’t remember ever not playing the guitar,” says the singer/ songwriter, who mononymously performs under her first name. “I was just so little.”

The now 16-year-old is set to record her first full-length album over spring break, with more than a decade of live performance experience behind her. Her melodies are full of a raw emotion that belie her age.

Her skillful guitar strumming and picking create rich acoustic soundscapes. And she comes alive in front of an audience, her engaging charisma creating fans everywhere she goes.

Born in Florida, Emelise first wanted to play guitar at the age of 4.

After her grandmother (her “biggest fan”) bought her a guitar for her birthday, she began lessons at age 5. Out of convenience, her mom found her first teacher at a music shop across the street from work, which is where everyone learned Emelise could play music by ear— listening to a song and quickly matching its note and melody. Soon, Emelise began learning a new song each week, easily replicating tracks she heard. To this day, she struggles with music theory.

“I can tell you what note it is on the guitar, but just putting it to little circles on lines—it’s hard for me,” she says. “I don’t really think of the names of the notes as much as how they make me feel. My ear is everything for me in music. My ear is my best friend.”

By the age of 6, her guitar teacher began bringing her to local gigs, inviting her to play during his breaks. She fell in love with performing

live, got her busker’s permit in Fort Myers, Florida, when she was 7, and has been playing for audiences any chance she gets ever since.

“Whenever I don’t have a show, I always go and busk to make my own show,” Emelise says. “It’s my practice. I love practicing in front of people.”

Her family moved to the Denver area when Emelise was 9, bringing her busking career with her. Emelise attributes her love of music to her parents.

“I remember when I was little, I’d just ride in the Jeep with the windows down and my dad would be blasting all this great music,” she says—Elton John, Dave Matthews Band, Brandi Carlisle, the Lumineers, Nathaniel Ratecliff. She’s either met and/or seen most of her heroes live, and many have also heard her play. (In July 2021, while playing at Denver’s Ace Eat and Serve, Lumineers lead singer Wesley Schultz walked by with his family right as she was singing “Dead Sea.” He posted his approval on social media.) She sees almost as many live shows as she plays—sometimes even skipping school to do what her educator parents call “professional development.”

For guitar specifically, Emelise is inspired by Tim Reynolds (who plays for Dave Matthews) and Tim Hanseroff (who plays with Brandy Carlisle). But more recently, she’s discovered more obscure musicians like Emily Remler, an American jazz guitarist who also began playing at a young age but passed away in her early 30s in 1990. Emelise has taken lessons in Flamenco, classical and jazz guitar over the years, melding these into her own style of playing, as well as voice lessons.

She now owns about 10 guitars, but prefers her Rockbridge, given to her by the company founded by a friend of Dave Matthews. She plays hard, often breaking strings in the middle of a set. It happens so often that both of her parents now know how to change the strings in under two minutes, something they learned after multiple trips to a local Guitar Center for the same service.

Emelise is tenacious in her pursuit of live performance, sometimes emailing up to 50 local venues at a time hoping it leads to booking at least a handful of shows. Without a booking agent, she manages this see EMELISE Page 16 FEBRUARY 24, 2022

all herself, often scheduling a handful of gigs each week in addition to busking. She’s played at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and the Apollo Theater in Harlem. She’s played Vail and other resorts on the weekends after skiing, and had a residency at Beaver Creek last summer, often performing after a day of mountain biking. She played the Denver Bernie Sanders rally in 2019, the Women’s March and March for our Lives in 2018. She’s performed as part of the The Boulder International Film Festival and Arise Festival, as well as Trident Booksellers, the local Sofar circuit, and she most recently opened for John Craigie at eTown Hall.

Through it all, she’s unphased by the size of the audience, unaccustomed to the nerves most people experience in front of crowds. Her mantra is: “The more people I can play in front of the better.”

When she sang the national anthem at the Major League Baseball (MLB) all-star game in Denver in July 2021, one of the heads of MLB came out and told her she was going to perform in front of millions of people. “The more the merrier,” she responded. She went on to do the same at the Little League Classic a few months later, her first televised performance.

She has yet to go out on tour, though; COVID-19 and its variants have kept her at local venues the last several years.

After a friend of a friend heard her busking outside Coors Field at age 10, she was introduced to Brad Corrigan of Dispatch and was scheduled to play with the band at Red Rocks in July 2020. Then l

she was supposed to join the band on a national acoustic tour in 2021, but both were canceled to accommodate public health. The pandemic has been especially difficult for someone who loves performing live as much as Emelise.

“I try not to look on the downside,” she says. “I just write a song about it.”

In fact, regardless of what may be going on in her life, Emelise spends most of her free time either writing or playing music. When she gets home from high school, the first thing she often does is pick up a pen and paper to write, sharing new compositions with her family each week. At teenage sleepovers, her friends all stay up into the early morning composing and singing. She’s written songs for class projects and about her family’s struggles as small-town farmers in Iowa and about her dreams, jotting down sleepy memories in the middle of the night. She has written so much that she actually doesn’t know how many songs she has, some still in fragments waiting to be finished. And she plans to write even more in the coming weeks, preparing tracks for the forthcoming album, the first of her music to be released on streaming services. Whatever doesn’t make the cut, however, Emelise promises to keep in her sets, both on the street and on the stage.

“My originals are my favorite to play because it’s my words that I’m sharing with other people,” she says. “And I think that’s really special. I just love hearing or seeing people connect with what I’m thinking and what my emotions are.”

Hendricks will describe the arc of the court’s abortion jurisprudence in terms of three wedges that pry the pregnant person apart from, first, the fetus; second, the doctor; and third, the community. The first two wedges have each taken a turn as the primary rationale for restricting abortion rights.

Most recently, at least one justice has taken an interest in anti-abortion rhetoric that drives a wedge between the pregnant person and their community by accusing Black persons who have abortions of participating in eugenics and genocide.

The cumulative effect of these three themes in abortion jurisprudence will shape the legal landscape of abortion in the U.S. after June 2022.

Navajo Peak (a poem in two voices)

In the winter of 1948 a plane crashed in the Indian Peaks west of Boulder, Colorado.

It took three days to recover the three bodies. One victim left behind a two-year old son in Seattle. Twenty-five years later and thirty-five years ago, that son hiked up that mountain.

I I go into the mountain where the body of my father lay Where the wreckage of the plane he rode is scattered.

Returning each time, to wander near it, To climb the peak above it, Navajo, Straining to sense the presence of my father’s grave.

II Guardian of your father’s mountain I watch you strive to conquer that jagged peak where you seek who knows exactly what—some real touch with your physical infant beginnings, some knowledge, some truth.

I watch you once, twice, try but fail to stand at that high granite ledge where he fell and was consumed by sacred heat, melted with the ancient geology.

I will watch you again struggle to make your connection. From the love in my heart come these whispering words: You do not have to hurl yourself against that hard mountainside-You are whole and free to soar, released by the final momentary blessings of your father whose life spills into yours forever.

From provocation to inspiration

Oscar-nominated shorts to play Boulder and Denver theaters

S

ometimes they are complete stories told with ON THE BILL: brevity and punch. Sometimes they are elonOscar-nominated short gated trailers for talent yet to come. Sometimes films. International Film they are provocations designed to rally and rile, Series, Feb. 25-March but every year, the Oscar-nominated short films 6, CU-Boulder, prove to be categories worth discovering. Packaged and Muenzinger Auditoridistributed to local theaters via ShortsTV, the 15 nomium; Landmark Mayan nees are divided into three ticket packages—Animation, Theatre (Animation and Documentary and Live Action—and cover a wide range Live Action only) opens of techniques and talents.

Feb. 25, 110 Broadway And each year, one category pops a little more St., Denver. than the rest. For 2022, that honor belongs to the nominees for Live Action Academy Award—five visceral and unforgettable stories from across the globe. My favorite: Please Hold from director K.D. Dávila. Set in the near future, where the totality of the incarceration process has become automated, Dávila uses absurdity and humor to present arrest, intake, incarceration and legal council as a series of impersonal and dehumanizing transactions that would have made Kafka proud. That Dávila and actor Erick Lopez make it humorous only adds to the reality of the situation. It feels prophetic and perfect.

The other nominees include the Kyrgyzstan-set Take and Run—incarceration of another kind—the Polish drama The Dress, the British terror The Long Goodbye (starring actor and rapper Riz Ahmed) and the sad and sweet On My Mind with Danish actor Rasmus Hammerich finding the words to say goodbye. All four shorts work best as a surprise, so their secrets will remain safe here.

Though not as strong as the Live Action category, the five nominees in Animation are just as global and varied. From the U.K. comes Joanna Quinn’s hand-drawn Affairs of the Art, a humorous look into the sometimes chaotic and obsessive life of 59-yearold factory worker Beryl. From Chile comes Bestia, with stop motion animator Hugo Covarrubias juxtaposing the delicacy of his main character as a porcelain doll and the atrocities of her actions—she’s based on the Chilean war criminal Íngrid Olderöck. The hand-drawn Russian BoxBallet from Anton Dyakov is another study in juxtaposition with two damaged souls coming together. He’s a hulking mass of a low-rung boxer, she’s a delicate and slender ballerina, and they’re both presented in an exaggerated and grotesque style reminiscent of Ralph Steadman. Spain’s The Windshield Wiper takes an untethered, free-flowing look at modern love through the artwork of Alberto Mielgo, and the British stop motion studio Aardman rounds out the five with Robin Robin, the story of a robin raised as a mouse. Don’t let the presence of Robin Robin fool you: none of the other four nominees are remotely family-friendly.

Last but certainly not least, Documentary. Four of the five nominees cover U.S. stories, with Three Songs for Benazir (Afghanistan), as the lone international offering.

It’s good, not the best of the bunch, but a revealing look at daily life and love under the shroud of the Taliban.

Three Songs for Benazir is also the only short taking the slice of life approach to storytelling. The other four go for the full course. Of them, The Queen of Basketball, about three-time college national champion and Olympic silver medalist Luisa Harris, is the most filling. Jay Rosenblatt’s When We Were Bullies is the most perplexing—you’ll see what I mean—while Audible, about the Maryland School for the Deaf football team, is sweet but feels like an SC Featured segment on SportsCenter. That leaves Lead Me Home, Pedro Kos and Jon Shenk’s look at people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco. Profoundly humanistic, Lead Me Home is slickly made but bites off more than it could ever hope to chew. And at 39 minutes long, it can barely introduce the players, let alone their separate issues or any whiff of suggestion about ways to move forward. Some movies leave you with more questions than answers—sometimes a good thing—but Lead Me Home somehow makes an already ungraspable situation all the more distant.

BY DAN SAVAGE Dear Dan: I’m a submissive gay man with a 15-year-old nephew.

Through his actions and words, both his parents and I have gathered he might be gay, which is absolutely no issue.

However, we’ve also recently discovered that he seems to be interested in D/s themes with him as the sub. Besides the occasional veiled comments and sketchy online searches, he’s also described situations where he’s convinced other boys to subtly Dom him, both in vanilla ways and some decidedly more borderline. We’re being careful to teach him about healthy boundaries and appropriate behaviors, but I have an additional struggle with all this. As a gay sub, I’ve been a bit of a failure. I’ve had no lasting relationships. I’ve never found a man who wanted me as both a partner and his slave. I know that there are success stories out there—sub guys with partners and families—but I’m not one of them. I want to be a good gay uncle, but honestly, I’m an objectively poor role model. If this is the path he ultimately takes, I want him to be safe, happy and loved. But I don’t know how to do this if I’m advising from my own collection of saddo experiences.

Finding someone his own age who’s not just gay but also attracted to him and into dominating someone—and someone your nephew is attracted to in turn—is a tall order. Reading about, thinking about, fantasizing about and masturbating about his kinks would be a far better and less frustrating use of his time.

“In one sense, it doesn’t matter if UGH is a ‘poor role model’ where longterm relationships are concerned,” said Temple. “He can still offer his nephew good advice without going into sad or sordid details. He can answer questions and promise to be non-judgmental. And UGH shouldn’t assume he’s a bad sub— or a bad role model—because he hasn’t found a long-term kinky partner. There are lots of reasons why a sub might not have met the right Dom, and only a few of those reasons really come down to being a bad sub. Most kinksters feel there are more subs out there than there are Doms, so there are good subs who haven’t been able to get the partner they deserve because the Dom-to-sub ratio is skewed.”

And while kinks can complicate a person’s search for a partner, being vanilla—or pretending to be vanilla—does not guarantee someone a partner.

Finding community means making kinky friends, not just matching with kinky sex partners.

ou’re never alone when you eat paella.

That’s not some old Spanish saying.

It’s a fact. Paella isn’t something delivered by DoorDash that you ingest while watching a new episode of the Colorado-situated Resident Alien.

Spain’s most famous dish is revered as a social gathering centerpiece. It is made to be eaten with others as soon as it emerges from the kitchen in the paella (pie-ay-uh), the thin steel cooking pan. Spanish bomba rice slowly absorbs broth and flavor in the pan from olive oil, smoked pimento paprika and vegetables crowned with various meats and seafood.

Paella is barely stirred in order to create the signature socarrat. Yes, the Spanish even have a word for that crunchy, snackable caramelized rice that sticks to the bottom of the paella pan.

The paella experience is built around waiting for it to cook—up to 45 minutes—so you hang out, nibble tapas, and sip red and white Spanish wines.

Paella has steadily creeped into Boulder County’s culinary awareness over the past decade or so thanks to a few dedicated chefs. Many locals know authentic paella because they’ve attended outdoor events where legendary chef and caterer Antonio Laudisio

Other eateries occasionally feature the dish, but we talked with chefs at Dagabi Tapas Bar, Piripi and Cafe Aion, where paella is showcased with individual approaches to making and serving it.

Learning the joy of paella

Antonio Rullo grew up with paella in Toledo, Spain.

“I’m making the food of my country,” says the chef at Dagabi Tapas Bar. He has served paella daily for 14 years since the North Boulder eatery turned from Italian to Spanish fare.

Paella is a flavor canvas, not a specific recipe, and Dagabi offers three variations. One is topped with chicken, pork and Spanish chorizo. The seafood variety usually includes mussels, clams, shrimp and calamari, Rullo says. The popular vegan paella is topped with in-season produce plus giant white beans and wild mushrooms.

“Every region of Spain has their own paella. Every single one is different. Some places use lamb and mushrooms. You also get game like rabbit and duck. Sometimes we make a black paella using black rice,” Rullo says.

Paella is still new to many diners, as is the time required. “Every night, paella is about education, introducing diners to the experience,” says Noah Westby, co-owner of Dagabi.

‘Paella means everything’

Argentinian by birth, Meyer fell in love with paella when he was working as a cook in Spain. “Paella means everything—it’s family, food, a social event,” he says.

Meyer doesn’t take paella lightly and only serves it on the first Monday of the month. “It’s unique. We shut down the regular menu and just serve paella all day. It takes all my fires. You can’t pre-make it,” he says.

The paella chef has to be vigilant. “You have to watch how the rice absorbs the liquid—not too much—and control the heat to get the socarrat right,” Meyer says.

Piripi serves one paella with Spanish chorizo, blood sausage, chicken and shrimp.

In the flagship seafood version, rice is SUSAN FRANCE tumbled with clams, mussels, calamari and shrimp. Fried tofu, garbanzos, artichokes and broccolini crown the vegetarian version.

“I try to be true to the paella culture,” Meyer says, adding that Piripi often offers live flamenco music on Paella Mondays, which typically sell out weeks in advance.

‘Paella is fun’

Many locals have sampled paella made

by Chef Dakota Soifer at Cafe Aion’s booth at the Boulder Farmers Market. He also serves it every night at his restaurant on the Hill, but the eatery was strictly oriented toward tapas and wine when it opened. Then, Soifer was given dozens of paella pans from a defunct restaurant in Boulder. There was only one catch.

“I started out from zero because I had never cooked paella before,” Soifer says. “I started studying and experimenting. I loved learning how to cook it properly, and now we’ve been serving it for 11 years.”

Soifer urges paella consciousness. “I tell diners, ‘It’s going to take about 40 minutes and you can’t get around it. It’s part of the experience, so relax with some tapas and wine.’ If someone is trying to make a 6 p.m. show at Macky Auditorium, we can start it ahead,” he says.

“We make paellas individually from scratch so it’s challenging. You can’t set a timer on the microwave,” Soifer says. But, “paella is fun and people love it. It strikes that balance between familiar and exotic dining.” Soifer admits some first-time paella diners have complained about “burnt” rice.

And yes, there may be leftover paella the next day. “It’s really good reheated the next day with an over-easy egg on top for breakfast,” he says.

The burden of history

Part I: In which Michael remembers the Walnut

I

miss the Walnut Brewery.

It wasn’t fancy, and it wasn’t hip, but the Walnut was my kind of place to swing by for a pint on a warm afternoon. The décor was on the dusty side—lived-in dusty, not dirty dusty—but the beers were wonderful: Old Elk Brown Ale, Indian Peaks Pale Ale, St. James Irish Red, Big Horn Bitter, 1123 IPA, Goldilocks beers; neither too hoppy, too malty nor too yeasty. But that lineup, brown, pale, red, bitter... they’re throwbacks to a time beer forgot. So, too, was the mug club proudly hanging behind the bar—an antiquated loyalty program that felt old long before the Walnut closed up shop June 4, 2017.

But that wasn’t the end. The Walnut—which was owned by Frank and Gina Day—reopened as Boulder Beer on Walnut one month later. You see, the Days also owned Boulder Beer, the first brewery in the county and the first brewery built in the state post-Prohibition. But the rebranding was not to be. In September 2018, the rechristened Boulder Beer on Walnut closed and reopened a month later, this time as Squared Pizza+Beer.

That lasted until December 2018. Then nothing. For almost 30 years, 1123 Walnut St. was iconic in the brewing history of Boulder. Today, nothing but fading memories marks its existence.

There’s nothing new or unusual about a bar, brewery, brewpub, tap house or restaurant closing after three decades in the business. Hell, it’s a triumph they lasted that long in the first place. But when the Walnut closed, a chunk of history closed with it. Today, Colorado is home to over 400 breweries, the majority of them opened within the last 10 years.

But it all started right here, in Boulder

County. A new way of drinking MICHAEL J. CASEY was born here. I feel like there should be a marker—possibly buried in the sidewalk at 1123 Walnut. Not because the Walnut was the first or the best, but because it was emblematic.

Can history be a burden?

It depends on whom you ask.

Years ago, I stayed with a family in the English suburbs outside of London. It was bucolic, romantic, ancient.

For a kid who grew up in a neighborhood about as old as he was, churches and castles from another century seemed otherworldly. But for my host, history was a nuisance. There was only one other guy sitting at the bar that afternoon when the bartender went to pull my final pint of Old Elk. Halfway up the glass, the chestnut brown liquid started to sputter and spit. A thick collar of creamy off-white foam followed. The cask was dry.

Frustrated, the bartender set the half-filled glass in front of me, wiped the beer’s name off the chalkboard and walked to the back.

As the kitchen door emptily swung behind her, the stranger down the bar muttered to no one in particular: “That’s it. No more ale.”

Murcotts and lebkuchen: Two last great holiday tastes

S

ome of us are not quite ready to think about spring or to let the holidays go yet, especially when it comes to great foods only available seasonally.

Forget about all those seedless Cuties and Clementines.

As a humble tangerine aficionado, I believe that the best tasting tangerine you’ll ever encounter is the Murcott. It’s often called the Honey Murcott because its rich, sweet flavor does have hints of wild honey. Usually seedless and easy to peel, it’s a tangerine/ orange hybrid done right.

By the way, don’t compost tangerine peels before you extract all that flavor in the peel or zest. Fill a jar with peels and vodka and in a month: tangerine vodka. Or soak them in white vinegar to make a blast of tart citrus to use in vinaigrettes. Murcotts can be hard to find. I located mine from Natural Grocers market in Lafayette.

Girl Scout cookies—especially Thin Mints—have their place on my palate, but I’ll forget about them while I have lebkuchen to enjoy.

I recently discovered that Leckerlee, an acclaimed 10-year-old bakery, had moved its headquarters from New York to Longmont in 2019. (There are locations in 12 states, including Colorado.)

Lebkuchen (pronounced leyb-koo-kuhn) has the intense spice of the best gingerbread but this soft, dense cross between cake and cookie is something completely different.

Leckerlee’s authentic Nuremberg-style lebkuchen are substantial confections made from 40% almonds, almond paste and hazelnuts. The dough includes a nine-spice blend, honey, candied citron and orange peel, and sea salt. Each chewy bite is a gingery, spicy and nutty joy with a nice holiday aroma. Each cookie is coated in glaze and sits atop an edible wafer which will remind Catholics of a large communion host. The chocolate variety is encased in a good dark chocolate shell.

As is traditional, Leckerlee lebkuchen are usually available only from late October through January and sold online at specialty stores around the country. Packed in decorative tins, Leckerlee lebkuchen are not inexpensive but quite a find for certain taste buds. I stumbled on the company’s last remaining stockpile at Le Frigo, Boulder’s French-accented deli and market .

The entourage illusion?

noid receptors CB1 and CB2, producing specific effects for specific cannabinoids.

“Investigations of the effect of the active component in the presence of its ‘entourage’ compounds may lead to observations of effects closer to those in Nature than investigations with the active component only.” The conclusion of that study, published in the European Journal of Pharmacology, reads.

Which is to say: The medicinal value of cannabis is greater as a full spectrum natural plant or extract than it is as a limited THC isolate. That’s in line with observations from a 2018 study in Biochemical Pharmacology on breast cancer tissue that showed improved outcomes when extracts included minor cannabinoids, compared to pure THC isolate.

More recent studies disagree, though. A 2020 paper published in Frontiers in Pharmacology, directly contradicts those findings from 1998. The researchers designed their experiment to look more directly at the relationship between terpenes and endocannabinoid “receptor-mediated activity.”

They wanted to know if terpenes such as myrcene, αand β-pinene, β-caryophyllene, and limonene actually affect how the CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptors receive cannabinoids.

That study asserts that “no data were produced to support the hypothesis that any of the five terpenes tested (either alone or in mixtures) have direct interactions with CB1 or CB2.”

It concludes, “This study adds to the evidence that the putative entourage effect cannot be explained by direct effects at CB1 or CB2.”

So, if it isn’t the combination of terpenes and cannabinoids interacting to affect endo-cannabinoid receptors

The “entourage effect” has been a popular theory in cannabis science for decades, but some researchers aren’t convinced

T

here is a theory in the world of cannabis called the “entourage effect” that says the whole of the plant is greater than the sum of its parts (Weed Between the Lines, “All About Those Terpenes,” May 27, 2021). According to the theory, different cannabinoids and terpenes all have specific qualities, that, when combined, inhibit or activate specific endocannabinoid receptors in our brains producing strain specific effects for users and patients seeking a specific kind of relief. It’s why full spectrum flower highs are more nuanced than the high from straight THC isolates. It’s why different strains can be used to achieve different effects.

As of now, only a few studies exist to support the idea. But scientists are beginning to find contradicting evidence. One company, called Juva Life, even thinks it may have pinpointed the root cause of this supposed effect—which it argues, has nothing to do with cannabinoids or terpenes at all.

The entourage theory was first espoused in 1998 by Israeli researchers Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat, who described it as “whole-plant synergy.” They argued that the body’s endocannabinoid system responds better to whole plant cannabis extracts, and that the effect “may represent a novel route for molecular regulation of endogenous cannabinoid activity.”

That research focused on two esters (chemical compounds derived from acids) known as 2-Lino-Gl and 2-Palm-Gl, neither of which actually bind to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. However, those two esters do affect how strongly a third, 2-Ara-Gl, binds to cannabi-

and creating the unique effects offered by full-spectrum cannabis, what is?

The California-based R&D cannabis company Juva Life thinks it might have found the answer. And it’s making moves to capitalize on it.

“We have now identified two non-cannabinoid compounds that may begin to explain the clinical benefits of cannabis through an anti-inflammatory mode of action,” the company’s founder and CEO, Doug Chloupek, explains. “While the current industry focus centers on cannabinoids, our strategy breaks from this school of thought.”

Instead, he says, they focused on unappreciated non-cannabinoids with therapeutic potential. Two of which seemed to show a lot of promise.

They named the novel non-cannabinoid compounds JUVA-019 and JUVA-041 (which they also promptly filed patents for). According to Chloupek, those compounds, which are only present in full-spectrum cannabis products, are what’s truly responsible for cannabis’ anti-inflammatory properties—they are the foundation of cannabis’ medicinal value and the root cause of the entourage effect, according to Juva Life. Because, Chloupek explains, JUVA-019 and JUVA-041 inhibit inflammation selectively and with increased potency to provide varying effects.

“While the clinical utility of cannabis has been ascribed to a small number of cannabinoid compounds, our platform has revealed that non-cannabinoid compounds possess potent anti-inflammatory properties seen in approved biologics,” Chloupek says.

Chloupek clarifies that he still believes the entourage effect is a real thing—he just thinks it’s misunderstood.

Neither he nor his scientists believe that cannabinoids and terpenes are the main factors behind it. And if Juva Life can prove that its proprietary non-cannabinoid compounds are, it could have huge implications for the pharmaceutical industry. Juva Life could essentially bottle the power of cannabis and the entourage effect in tablet form to sell all over the world.

For now, though, the jury remains out on the entourage effect. While it seems obvious that it is a real phenomenon, the science doesn’t yet agree on the mechanisms behind it or to what extent it makes a difference.
