In February of 1963, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed February as the heart health month to create conscience about the main cause of death for both men and women until these days. Back then, it was responsible for half of all deaths in the US. Heart problems could be preventable; during this month, several organizations, including the American Heart Association, share ideas and information to help us make intelligent and healthy decisions. Meanwhile, in Mexico, on February 24th. It is the celebration of the National Flag, the patriotic emblem. A symbol that stands for loyalty, justice, and liberty represents the fight for Independence from Spain. Loyalty is represented this month, loyalty in friendship, homeland, and also love and kindness for others and ourselves. Join me in taking care of our health, listen to our heart during these challenging times, let’s take good care of our heart, we can prevent heart problems by remembering that stress, smoking, and lack of exercise are bad for your health. However, even though there could be alarming numbers, 80 percent of all heart diseases can be prevented. Always grateful,

ada febrero festejamos el día del amor y la amistad. Deseamos que nuestros lectores se contagien de buenos deseos y de un valor muy importante como lo es la lealtad para con los suyos. Pero también en este mes, personas de todo Estados Unidos se reúnen para crear conciencia sobre la principal causa de muerte tanto en hombres como en mujeres; en 1963, el presidente estadounidense Lyndon B Johnson nombró oficialmente a febrero como el mes de la salud del corazón, en una época donde la enfermedad cardíaca fue responsable de casi la mitad de las muertes en los Estados Unidos. Con frecuencia, los problemas cardíacos se pueden prevenir y, a lo largo del mes, varias organizaciones, incluida la American Heart Association, comparten ideas para ayudar a las personas a tomar decisiones inteligentes y saludables.

na impactante noticia nos puso a pensar sobre esta pandemia que actualmente vivimos, y que se debe tomar más en serio. Debemos seguir cuidándonos y no bajar la guardia. Así como muchas personas perdieron la vida el pasado 2020 luchando por defenderse del Covid-19, así perdió la batalla Armando Manzanero uno de los mejores cantautores que ha tenido Mexico. Sin duda, todo un legado inolvidable ha dejado en la historia de la música en español, un sinfín de discos vendidos así como también innumerables reconocimientos; uno de ellos el Grammy que obtuvo en 2014 y que ahora está expuesto en un museo que a pocos meses antes de su partida, quizo regalar a su natal Merida, Yucatán. Armando Manzanero falleció a los 85 años, el autor de clásicos de la balada romántica latinoamericana, como "Somos novios", "Voy a apagar la luz", "Contigo aprendí", "Esta tarde vi llover", “No”, entre otras. A lo largo de sus 70 años de trayectoria, publicó más de 30 trabajos discográficos, musicalizó numerosas películas y escribió más de 400 canciones. Manzanero, calificado como "el más importante compositor vivo de la música mexicana". Sus temas han sido versionados a lo largo de los años por artistas de la talla de Elvis Presley, con "It's impossible", una versión en inglés de "Somos novios", Dionne Warwick, Tony Bennett, Alejandro Fernández y Christina Aguilera. Fue productor de varios artistas mexicanos, apadrinó conciertos y buscó nuevos talentos, convirtiéndose en un referente de la industria cultural del país. Desde la presidencia de la Sociedad de Autores y Compositores de México, cargo que ocupaba desde 2010, luchó para dignificar la labor de los artistas y reconocer la autoría de sus obras. Manzanero deja un gran legado, de romanticismo, de cariño a la música mexicana como actor y productor de sus composiciones, que sin duda no dejarán de escucharse.

Many records sold as well as several awards including the 2014 Grammy which are exposed at a new museum that was built in his honor, in Mérida Yucatán, months before his passing. Armando Manzanero was 85 years old when he passed. Author of several classic Latin America romantic ballads such as: “Somos novios,” “ Voy a apagar la luz,” “Contigo aprendí,” “ Esta tarde vi llover,” “No,” among others. In his 70 year trajector y published 30 long plays, musicalizad many motion pictures and composed more than 400 songs. peaking of Cuauhtemoc City is a synonym of apples, cheese, fields of cattle feed, and milking herds. It is called the Door of the mountain range, and its commercial corridor is one of the most important in the State. In the Fall, neighbor crops look like golden rugs that contrast with the sky ’s blue, creating non-like landscapes in the skyline. This Centennial city that grew roots along with the Train Station in the dawn of the XX Centur y and grew a strong as a town with the agrarian struggle in 1920-21, a year later, saw the arrival of the Menonita community that decided to settle their productive fields in this land. Some Chinese families arrived before the railroad construction; other families such as Germans, Mestizo Mexicans, Russians, and Raramuri arrived later on. Cuauhtemoc was for all of them. This was their utopian destination: “The Promise Land.” In the ’20s of last centur y, San Antonio de Arenales- the previous name of Cuauhtemoc- had significant growth in its productive and commercial activities and population increase. In 1927 the agrarians succeeded the authorization to change its name to Villa Cuauhtemoc. But, why Cuauhtemoc? What is the relation between that newborn town of the northern plains with the last Mexica Tlatoani? It might be none, and even some may think that it could be a witty joke. Nothing like that. It wasn’t a matter of geographical proximity, but a Nationalist post-revolutionar y vision, along with the land distribution, searched for the most depth roots of identity. In that sense, Cuauhtemoc, the Young Warrior that lead the Tenochtitlan defense against the Spanish Conqueror in 1521, claimed the principles of resilience and courage in adversity.

Durante el otoño los pastizales aledaños son verdaderas alfombras doradas que contrastan con la intensidad del azul del cielo, formando paisajes inigualables en el horizonte del llano. Esta ciudad centenaria que echó raíces con la estación del tren al despertar del siglo XX y se fortaleció como centro de población con la lucha de los agraristas en 1920-21, un año después vio arribar a la comunidad menonita, quien decidió asentar por estas tierras sus tradicionales campos productivos. Algunas familias chinas habían llegado antes con la construcción del ferrocarril; otras más de alemanes, mestizos mexicanos, rusos y rarámuri lo hicieron posteriormente. Para todas ellas, Cuauhtémoc era el anhelado destino de sus utopías, la “tierra prometida”. En la década de los 20 del siglo pasado San Antonio de Arenales -el nombre primigenio de Cuauhtémoc-, registraba un aumento significativo en sus actividades productivas y comerciales, a la par del incremento poblacional. En 1927 a iniciativa de los agraristas lograron la autorización de cambiar el nombre del poblado por el de Villa Cuauhtémoc. ¿Por qué Cuauhtémoc? ¿Qué relación tenía aquella naciente ciudad de los llanos del norte con el nombre del último tlatoani mexica? En apariencia ninguna, incluso algunos pudieron considerarlo hasta ocurrencia. Nada de eso. En esencia, no era cuestión de cercanía geográfica o presencia regional previa, sino la visión nacionalista posrevolucionaria que, a la par del reparto agrario, buscaba afanosamente en los pueblos originarios su mas honda raíz de identidad. En ese sentido, Cuauhtémoc, el joven guerrero que encabezó la defensa de Tenochtitlán ante el conquistador español en 1521, reivindicaba los principios de resistencia y valentía en la adversidad.

uring the winter season, when the snow falls in our region, the low temperatures due to the cold front in December and more so in Januar y amazes all of us that live in the area. The mountain views and those of the different cities show a different color. We get happy for the winter season and the amazing views that nature provides. In Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, El Paso, Las Cruces, and surrounding areas, we have enjoyed the sunrise with the surprise of the snowfall that makes us go out and play with the snow or simply admire what nature has to offer. And what about Ruidoso, New Mexico, that ever y year during this season is covered with snow. Even though the weather forecast is of low temperatures, cities are prepared to help those in need.

n esta temporada que la nieve llega a nuestra región, las bajas temperaturas por los frentes fríos que han pasado en diciembre y especialmente en enero han causado asombro a los que vivimos en esta zona. Los paisajes de las montañas, así como las ciudades, se han vestido de otro color. Sin duda nos alegramos del invierno y de esas vistas fabulosas que nos regala la naturaleza. En Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez, El Paso, Las Cruces, y sitios aledaños hemos disfrutado de amaneceres con esa gran sorpresa que a propios y extraños les contagia para salir de sus casas y jugar con la nieve, o simplemente admirar lo que nos brinda la naturaleza. Y que decir de ruidoso en Nuevo México que se cubre de blanco cada año en esta temporada. Y aunque los servicios meteorológicos han pronosticado temperaturas muy bajas, los municipios han estado alerta y procurando dar auxilio a las personas más vulnerables para que estén resguardados y no sufran ningún percance . Lo cierto es que cuando contamos con nevadas en nuestra ciudad, a muchos se les pinta una sonrisa en la cara de tan solo ver este fenómeno natural cerca de nosotros, y al parecer se siente el cálido abrigo de estar en casa, disfrutando de la familia y resguardados del frío. 54

he theater is an artistic expression that overwhelms performers and spectators. It is one of the oldest artistic activities known. It is a versatile art that combines an intellectual exercise and situational representations. This was one of the aspects that captivated Daniel Miranda Cano to become an actor, illuminator, and producer of plays and scenes, where he learned to appreciate the different disciplines in this work scope. He is the founder of Grupo Telรณn de Arena in Ciudad Juarez. Took several years of experience to find his vocation in cultural management, he was trained and obtained several certifications at the Universidad Autรณnoma de Ciudad Juarez. He has a Bachelor's degree in cultural promotion from the Universidad de Guadalajara. With a different vision and supporting culture at the border, he works involved in cultural programs within the State of Chihuahua, developing a diagnosis of the cultural spaces and a catalog of all theaters in the state. During his tenure, Daniel has held within the state administration the following positions: Department Head of Cultural Development in Ciudad Juarez and currently he is Director of Cultural Development in the Secretar y of Culture of the State of Chihuahua, he supports and strengthens scenic arts in Chihuahua, with the implementation in 2018 of the Theater Network helped in the development the of local companies and talents. He has been involved in 50 different shows as scenic creator, producer, illuminator, and promoting cultural activities. Due to his brilliant trajector y as a cultural manager and theater creator, Miranda will assume the National Theater Coordination of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature. With this appointment, public policies and theater in Mexico will be strengthened, focusing on social inclusion and expressions of cultural diversity. Border Heritage wishes him the best of luck. l teatro es una expresión artística que atrapa tanto a creadores como a espectadores, ya que es una de las actividades artísticas más antiguas que conoce la humanidad. Es un arte muy versátil que combina el ejercicio intelectual con la representación de situaciones. Esto es solo un aspecto de lo que a Daniel Miranda Cano cautivó para comenzar una carrera como actor, iluminador, o como productor de varias obras y escenas, que lo llevaron a apreciar y a aprender de varias disciplinas en este ámbito. Es miembro fundador del grupo Telón de Arena, en Ciudad Juárez. Fueron varios años de experiencias y reflexiones para encontrar una vocación; como gestor cultural se preparó tomando varios diplomados ofrecidos por la universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, para después graduarse de la Universidad de Guadalajara, en Promoción Cultural. Con otra visión y con el fin de apoyar a la cultura en esta frontera, actualmente trabaja en programas artísticos dentro del estado de Chihuahua, programas que arrojan un diagnóstico de los espacios culturales. También esta trabajando en la realización de un catálogo de todos los teatros del estado. Daniel Miranda se desempeñó como Jefe del departamento de Desarrollo Cultural en Ciudad Juárez y actualmente es Director de Desarrollo Cultural de la Secretaria de Cultura del Estado, para el apoyo y fortalecimiento de las artes escénicas en Chihuahua, ya que con la implementación del programa Red de Teatros desde el año 2018, se le dio impulso al desarrollo de proyectos de compañías y creadores locales. Ha participado en más de 50 espectáculos en diferentes áreas, como creador escénico, productor, iluminador y gestor de actividades culturales. Por su brillante trayectoria como gestor cultual y creador teatral, Miranda asumirá la Coordinación Nacional de Teatro del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura. Con este nombramiento se fortalecerán las políticas públicas y el teatro en México, con un enfoque hacia la inclusión social y las expresiones de la diversidad Cultural principalmente. l Paso TBD is a local paintball team that made their first appearance representing El Paso, TX at the 2020 NXL World Cup of Paintball. This event took place in Kissimmee FL and is a game were players shoot pellets of paint from airguns to opposite team players. It is said that paintball is a sport used as a way to build team spirit and increase communication within people of all ages and genders. Paint-balling is more than just a fun sport, it has great benefits that can relate to increasing your daily exercise, can help with weight loss, stress relief, build team work and leadership, and of course great entrainment within the community. El Paso TBD started back in Februar y with group of adolescents including; Julian Aldana, Abraham Apodaca, David Brown, Christina Gonzales, Sebastian Ochoa, Peter Rodolfy, Andres Salas and Justin Sepulveda. They are currently sponsored by Carbon Paintball and Jedi Refrigeration LLC and getting ready to represent once again El Paso, Tx at the West Coast Paintball Players League in Sacramento, CA in March of 2021.

l Paso TBD es un equipo de paintball local que hizo su primera aparición representando a El Paso, TX en la Copa Mundial de Paintball NXL 2020 evento que tuvo lugar en Kissimmee Fl. Este singular deporte es un juego en el que los jugadores disparan perdigones a sus adversarios con pistolas que contienen pintura -no tóxica-, con la ayuda de aire comprimido; además cada participante o jugador lleva un traje especial para protegerse el cuerpo y la cara. Se usa un casco donde toda la cara está cubierta. Esta medida es para evitar lesiones ya que los disparos pueden llegar a ser peligrosos. Siempre se recomienda entrenarse y seguir cada una de las indicaciones de los instructores profesionales. El Paintball es considerado muy útil para desarrollar el espíritu de equipo y aumentar la comunicación entre los jugadores de todas las edades y géneros. El paintball es más que un deporte divertido, tiene grandes beneficios que pueden relacionarse con el aumento de su ejercicio diario, puede ayudar con la pérdida de peso, aliviar el estrés, desarrollar el trabajo en equipo y el liderazgo y, por supuesto, un gran entrenamiento dentro de la comunidad. El Paso TBD comenzó en febrero con un grupo de adolescentes como: Julian Aldana, Abraham Apodaca, David Brown, Christina Gonzales, Sebastian Ochoa, Peter Rodolfy, Andres Salas y Justin Sepulveda. Actualmente se estan preparando para representar una vez más a El Paso, Tx en la West Coast Paintball Players League en Sacramento, CA el próximo Marzo de este año. Cabe mencionar que actualmente estos jóvenes integrantes del equipo de El Paso entrenan a diario para lograr estar dentro de las competencias profesionales. Ahora se preparan para participar en el torneo West Coast Paintball Players Leage, el el próximo mes de marzo en Sacramento California, y asi, poder representar muy en alto a esta comunidad del sur de Estados Unidos. CLEAN, GREEN, AND HEALTHY BEAUTY

Am I the only one that has lived under the misconception that clean, green and healthy skin products don’t exist? My eyes were opened a few years ago as I started to research on this new beauty trend also known as “Clean Beauty”. I have always had a passion for skin care, and I have always had an interest for trying on new products on my skin. Yet I never fully understood what I was putting on my skin… SO.. what is clean beauty anyway ? As def ined by the Clean Beauty Gods (aka GOOP) “Clean, for us, is quite intense: It means a non-toxic product that is made without a long, ever-evolving list of ingredients linked to harmful health effects f rom hormone disruption, to cancer, to plain-old skin irritation”. So, basically any product in which you don’t really understand the ingredient list, any product that tests on animals, any product that causes damage to our environment, and any product that can cause you harm! YES! Harm. Yes, I know what you are thinking! This is America! We must have the FDA regulating everything! Well yes, the FDA regulates Cosmetic companies, with a law that was passed in 1938!!! ,1938!! 1938! Ok ,I’m done.

Don’t you f ind this odd, and scary ? This old fashioned act does not require the FDA to pull f rom the market potentially dangerous chemicals, or ingredients used in products until after they hit the market! So how is the cosmetic industry regulated then? Well, they SELF- REGULATE! Meaning they use ingredients that can be harmful to your health and, the FDA does not have approve or disapprove of any product until after they hit the market. They give that responsibility to the cosmetic companies creating the products. Instead of blaming the government, companies such as EWG and Credo Beauty took action into their own hands and started to shine light on harmful ingredients! I know our government is too busy with immigration laws and other types of types of laws at this moment, but just think about the millions of girls trying on make up for the f irst time, what if it’s your daughter? Your sister? Would you want her to be exposed to a toxic chemical? Exactly. I also want to make clear, I am not here to blame anyone, not even our government, this is why I have decided to be proactive! I will post a more in-depth article about FDA regulations, vegan, animal cruelty f ree, and other certif ications about products so we can have more understanding of what clean beauty consist of!

In 2020 there are more regulations on pesticides than on cosmetics alone.

We will keep this in mind the next time we are at the cosmetic isle and see tricky words like these! Which brings us to the actual product certif ications, companies are audited, tested, and pay a fee to put a certif ication symbol on their product’s label! These are the ones you want to look for in a label!

Another aspect I want us to focus on is “Greenwashing”. This is happening now more than ever, companies print their labels with the words “Raw Ingredients”, “Natural Ingredients”, “Green”, “Eco”, which in reality might not even mean that they are clean products. WHY? Simple, you see, companies can put whatever they want on their label, so let’s say out of the whole ingredient list there is about 2 ingredients that are “Natural” (meaning they come f rom the earth, but may contain antibiotics or pesticides!) so because they have 2 ingredients that are natural, they can brand their product to say,” Made with Natural Ingredients!

I will also like to point out that synthetic cosmetics are NOT bad! And while I prefer natural ingredients, sometimes natural doesn’t mean is best, we still need synthetic ingredients such as preservatives so the consistency of the formula stays f resh for longer. This is why we need to be careful when reading the ingredient lists and labels! In reality, there is no such thing as a chemical-f ree product. All products contain chemicals even if they are clean beauty products, but we do want to stay away f rom toxic chemicals! Even water is a chemical! Clean refers to products that use natural ingredients and often incorporate synthetics that have been certif ied safe for people and the planet. In this blog we will navigate through the world of clean beauty together, we will discover which products work and those who don’t! Ingredients we need and ingredients we have to stay away f rom!
