BOND Civil & Utility Construction, along with GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions, has been awarded the EPC contract to supply a state-of-the-art digital onshore substation for Empire Wind 1, one of New York’s first offshore wind farm projects. New York is on a path to achieve its mandated goal of a zeroemission electricity sector by 2040, including 70 percent renewable energy generation by 2030, and to reach economy wide carbon neutrality.

BOND Civil & Utility self-performed perimeter security upgrades to an existing substation for a major local utility company. BOND’s Civil & Utility work included the installation of 277 hybrid precast foundations, 3,200 LF of panelized ballistic fencing consisting of 10’/15’/20’ high fence sections, 2 structural vehicle gates, 3 structural pedestrian gates, electrical infrastructure for security camera installation, trenching excavation and backfill for associated grounding and conduits and perimeter barb wire installation. The fence line installation work revolved heavily around various high voltage overhead line outage across the substation site. The fast track schedule through the winter provided a challenge, as well as the confidentiality and security around the construction site. BOND

BOND Civil & Utility was hired to provide civil and below grade electrical construction services to support the installation of a new 345 kV gas-insulated bus, a 345 – 115 kV autotransformer and the associated Trenwa trench at Eversource STA 211 in Woburn, MA.
BOND’s Civil & Utility preconstruction effort included a review of methods to optimize the construction schedule. One of the major engineered solutions included the installation of the pre-cast sound wall versus the proposed cast-in-place wall, which resulted in significant cost savings and shortened the construction schedule.

The scope of work included, the removal of the existing Ipswich River Substation; the installation of 23 kV Supply Lines and Distribution feeders; the installation of a new 23 kV distribution feeder located at the existing Waters River Substation; the replacement of the 23 kV relay and control system at Waters River Substation; minor modifications to the protection system at the Warren Street Switching Station; and the installation of fiber optic cable equipment from the Warren Street offices to Ipswich River Substation.

As part of a proactive program to reduce nitrogen gas leaks and increase the availability and reliability of transmission facilities, BOND Civil & Utility installed a composite carbon fiber encapsulation of Queensboro Bridge 69kV Transmission Riser Pipes. The scope included the reinforcement of composite carbon fiber to mitigate existing corrosion and serve as a secondary pressure boundary of six riser 8-5/8” diameter pipes of the Queensboro Bridge Queens side for a cumulative length 825 linear feet. The composite reinforcement system was coated with a protective epoxy system after installation to protect the carbon fiber composite from UV light, impact, and abrasion.

BOND Civil & Utility performed significant improvements to Station 726, a critical component of the NSTAR Lower SEMA 345 kV Transmission Project. To improve the adequacy and reliability of the power supply to the southeast region of Massachusetts, the project included the following: expansion to the existing substation (Carver); work inside an existing rigid-bus crossover station; construction of an underground crossing of the R/W with 2 overhead-to-underground transition stations; expansion of an existing switching station and construction of a new 345 kV to 115 kV substation.

BOND Civil & Utility worked with Eversource Energy, formerly Northeast Utilities, to complete the Stamford Reliability Cable Project. The work included furnishing and installing a complete and operable 115 kV cable duct bank system extending approximately 1.5 miles between the Glenbrook Substation on Lincoln Avenue and the South End Substation in Stamford, CT. This project improves the transmission system in the Stamford area supplying customers with reliable electrical power to meet their growing energy needs. It also ensures that the area’s electric grid conforms to national and regional reliability standards.

Worcester 115kV Cable Project

BOND Civil & Utility completed this challenging underground transmission project for Prysmian Power Cable & Systems and National Grid. Existing spare ducts were utilized for the first mile of the project with the remaining 2 miles requiring a new 6-way concrete encased duct bank and splicing vaults. In addition to executing the trenching operation safely along a densely populated business and residential area, there was an extensive amount of ledge removal to attain proper depth. Other major work included a 42” pipe-jacking under the active CSX / MBTA railroad spur line, as well as sidewalk and pavement restoration.

BOND Civil & Utility provided self-performing crews supplemented with local subcontractors to meet the scheduled deadline. The scope of work included the installation of 100,000 LF of conduit through 5 communities (Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, Bridgeport & Milford) and 4,800 LF of conduit in a residential community in Cheshire, CT, the installation of 116 pre-cast splice vaults, 3 river crossings and one 54” pipe-jacking under the Metro North Railroad. Primary challenges included dewatering, traffic control and significant ledge removal. A majority of the work occurred at night on well-traveled areas of Route 1.

BOND Civil & Utility crossed under Westchester Creek to complete the excavation work scope for the installation of 2 pre-cast manholes, backfill and restoration. Carson Corporation completed the reaming and pulling of the 8 HDPE conduits, and Consolidated Edison pulled their own cable from manhole to manhole.
