ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS
Oscar Valenzuela Councillor of Gran Alacant & Education
Q: Bus service petition
Yet again the people of Gran Alacant have to endure the rubbish bus service from September 1 for the next 10 months.
The same as in the last 4 years. The timetable is the skeleton service from the Covid era, not even the one in service before then.
It is utterly unacceptable when politicians and policy makers drone on about the environment and the need to avoid car congestion and pollution. I assume they all hypocritically use cars as they surely can't rely on the rubbish timetable to travel around GA. Councillors in the past have said the service is the responsibility of the bus operator Vectalia. That is nonsense. The area Transport Council specify the bus frequency they want in the contract so the responsibility is theirs.
Talk is cheap, when will our councillors actually do something to make sure the people of GA have a decent bus service. Please don't accept a 'we are looking into it' response or any other weasel excuse. Pat.
A: GA Advertiser
Hi Pat, we agree there is much room for
Borja Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare
improvement and will continue raising these concerns with councillors. We'd also like to highlight a petition that local resident Angela Rogers has launched on the bus service, which has already gathered nearly 300 signatures online at the time of writing. The petition can also be signed physically at over 40 local businesses in Gran Alacant.
Q: Rubbish and Blood Donation
Thank you for printing my picture of the rubbish on Carabassi outside med 3 bin recycling area I sent message on 11th of August it was removed on the28th August only for a fridge to be dumped there on the 29th . I have just read the information relating to blood donations now being accepted after 30 Years because of CJD in England we could not be blood donors I had already tried and was told this, i was a Paramedic in Manchester for 23years and a blood /plasma donor as I am type AB so reading you report on this I thought I would gladly go but was disappointed to read you can’t donate after 65 and I am now 71 disappointing but that’s the rules.
Thanks, Patrick.

GRAN ALACANT TRANSPORT PETITION
Many residents and visitors have expressed concerns about the lack of public transport in Gran Alacant. A local resident, Angela Rodger, has launched a petition to improve the urbano bus line 15. If you’d like to show your support, you can sign the petition by scanning this QR code.
LOGGERHEAD TURTLES AT CARABASSÍ BEACH
At the end of August, over 50 loggerhead turtles made their first journey from sand to sea at Carabassí beach. The turtles hatched from eggs laid in Los Arenales del Sol earlier in July, with volunteers carefully monitoring the nest to ensure the hatchlings’ safe release. The event drew residents and visitors who observed the turtles reaching the sea, while local organisations helped guide the process and support conservation efforts.
NEW TAXIWAY PLANNED FOR ALICANTE AIRPORT BY 2028
Airport operator Aena has announced a €13 million investment in a new taxiway to
improve operations at Alicante Airport. Work is due to start in early 2026, with the project expected to be completed in just over two years.
In addition, further projects are on the horizon: a €24 million terminal expansion, a possible rail connection to enhance access, and a proposed €6 million investment for new office space rentals and upgraded parking facilities.
ARENALES ROAD TO BECOME ONE-WAY
Starting in September, Elche City Council will begin works on Avda. San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The €400,000 project in Arenales Del Sol will convert the avenue into a oneway street toward Alicante, while adding parallel parking to nearly double available spaces. Works are scheduled for completion before Christmas to improve mobility, access and support local businesses in the area.
SANTA POLA TOWN HALL CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS
Santa Pola Town Hall will remain closed for about a year as major renovations get underway. The €3.8M project, funded by the European Next Generation Funds, aims to transform the building into a zeroconsumption, fully sustainable facility.
According to Councilor Trini Ortiz
(Infrastructure & Urban Planning), the work includes replacing old windows, updating the exterior, and installing solar panels.
During construction, municipal departments have been relocated:
• Infrastructure, Registry & Contracting → Civic Center, C/ Castaños
• Revenue & Treasury → Former Quirón medical center, C/ San José
• Culture, Sports & Education → Casa de la Cultura
• Human Resources → Local Police Station (Santa Pola)
• Beaches → Cofradía
• Tourist Office → Santa Pola Castle
Plenary sessions are now held at the Fishermen’s Association hall, and the mayor’s office has moved to Casa de Don Gabino.
Renovations began in August and are expected to finish by summer 2026.
SANTA POLA ON THE BIG SCREEN
For over a month last year, Santa Pola became the set of an Oscar-winning director’s new film. Alejandro Amenábar’s 'El Cautivo' has now finally hit theatersand Santa Pola takes centre stage!
The iconic Castillo Fortaleza of Santa Pola was transformed into a spectacular 16thcentury setting, bringing to life the story of young Miguel de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quixote before his fame.
Starring Julio Peña as Cervantes and Alessandro Borghi as Hassan, the film also
features Fernando Tejero, Luis Callejo, Roberto Álamo, Miguel Rellán, and more.
While El Cautivo was filmed in several historic locations - from the Ciudad de la Luz film studios in Alicante to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara and the Alcázar of Seville - it is the Castle Fortress of Santa Pola that shines as one of the film’s key stages.
NEW HOTEL PROJECT IN EL ALTET
Plans are moving forward for a hotel and gas station in El Altet. The “Hotel Elche” project includes 92 rooms, leisure areas including a pool and spa, and complementary services such as a gym and restaurant. It will be located next to the Los Limoneros residential area, between the N332 and the Camino del Cementerio. The investment is estimated at €3 million and would generate around 50 new jobs.

by Michiko Aoyama
Tokyo’s most enigmatic Librarian Sayuri Komachi is no ordinary Librarian.
Sensing exactly what someone is searching for in life, she provides just the book recommendation to help them find it.
We meet 5 visitors to the Library, each at a different crossroads in their life.
• The restless retail assistant eager to gain new skills
• The mother faced with a demotion at work after maternity leave
• The conscientious accountant who yearns to open an antique store
• The gifted young manga artist in search of motivation
• The recently retired salaryman on a quest for a newfound purpose
Can she help them find what they are looking for?
I was given this book as a birthday present and when I got round to reading it I found it delightful and well written. It makes you take stock of your life and the connections you have with those around you.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR OF SANTA POLA: THE FUTURE OF GRAN ALACANT AT STAKE
Dear Madam Mayor,
We are writing to you as residents of Gran Alacant, as neighbours, and as people who chose to make this beautiful corner of the Costa Blanca our home. We believe that Gran Alacant is, and should remain, a paradise where the well-being of residents is not sacrificed to private profit.
But today, we believe that vision is under serious threat from ill-conceived development.
We have recently learned of the planned construction of a four-storey hotel on Av. Escandinavia 61, at the end of the avenue, between Urbanizaciones El Faro, Brisas del Faro and Olivo de Oro. The project includes a 98-room hotel with capacity for more than 800 people, plus event spaces. On the same plot, there is also a proposed urbanización of more than 100 houses.
This is not just another development. It is a turning point in the nature and character of Gran Alacant.
A Project That Changes Everything
This project will fundamentally and irreversibly alter the fabric of Av. Escandinavia and the wider community:
• Overcrowding: The hotel would inject the population of a small village onto a single dead-end road. With minimal space for parking or deliveries, hundreds of extra vehicles will spill into the sierra. The result will not be inconvenience but permanent congestion.
• Traffic: Av. Escandinavia is a cul-de-sac with one road in and out. Each summer it already clogs from the post office roundabout to the Faro. Construction will add heavy machinery for years, followed by constant traffic from guests, suppliers and taxis. The whole avenue — including the school, health
centre, sports facilities, and homes — will be affected.
• Strain on services: Our water, sewage, and waste collection are already overstretched. We have seen sewage spill onto beaches and endured constant complaints about rubbish. Adding hundreds more residents risks collapse, not strain. If services cannot cope today, why add further pressure?
• Safety risks: The plan involves removing over 10,700 tonnes of earth, installing gas deposits, and building foundations 14 metres deep on fractured terrain — all just metres from homes. Fire safety has been ignored. We live in a forested sierra at high risk of wildfire, yet no evacuation plan exists for a site with only one access road. To proceed without robust safety measures is reckless.
All of this paints a clear picture: this project will not enhance Gran Alacant — it will overwhelm it. What is being proposed is not sustainable development but the suffocation of our community under noise, traffic, pollution, and overcrowding.
Where Is the Transparency?
Equally troubling is how this project has been handled. For two years, we have sought clarity from your councillors. Too often, what we received were half-answers or broken promises.
Why were residents not informed when a formal planning application was submitted, despite assurances we would be? Instead, the application was accepted quietly in August, when many were away. It left neighbours with only five days — including a weekend — to review thousands of technical pages.
And why were those documents scattered
across dozens of poorly named files, accessible only through obscure software, with no index? This is not transparency; it is a barrier.
We have also repeatedly requested meetings, especially to discuss our official allegations, yet the council continues to avoid this conversation. Each unanswered request deepens mistrust and the sense that residents’ voices are being sidelined.
What Future Do You See for Gran
Alacant?
This is bigger than one hotel. In recent years, Gran Alacant has seen relentless growth: new urbanizaciones, high-density housing on flood-prone land, and now this hotel plus 100 more houses. The pattern is clear: more buildings, more strain, but no vision.
So we ask you directly:
1. What is the long-term plan for Gran Alacant? Today, residents see only uncontrolled growth.
2. Is there a master plan, or are projects simply approved piecemeal until our community becomes unmanageable?
3. Where is the assessment of cumulative impact on roads, water, sewage, health, and safety?
4. How are these projects meant to protect the well-being of residents and the environment we depend on?
And specifically, why does the council continue to support this hotel project?
The plans call it a hotel, yet hidden in the documents are kitchens in every room — in reality, an aparthotel or rental block. With its own cafeteria, it will compete with local bars and restaurants rather than support them. Even the argument of economic benefit disappears.
The contradictions are obvious. If all parties sat around a table, the developer would likely admit they prefer housing. The “hotel” operator has already questioned viability and pushed for an aparthotel to make it more profitable. The supposed benefit to businesses is doubtful, and residents reject this type of building.
A Call for Accountability
This project is being pushed forward as if it were inevitable. But it is not. It is a choice — and choices have consequences.
You and your administration carry the responsibility of protecting Gran Alacant. That means prioritising safety and community well-being above speculative development or political gain. The people who live here deserve clarity, honesty, and a real voice in decisions that shape our lives.
We therefore ask you to:
• Engage directly with residents before decisions are made, with transparency and accountability.
• Halt this project until independent environmental, safety, and infrastructure studies are completed and all allegations are addressed.
We all understand that places evolve. But in our opinion, this is not evolution — it is the dismantling of our community. Nature is being replaced with concrete, silence with traffic, and community with chaos. Gran Alacant is already at breaking point.
Madam Mayor, this is your moment to choose. If this project goes ahead as it stands, it will not be remembered as progress. It will be remembered as irreversible damage.
Sincerely,
Juan & Archie

Step by Step: Healing Your Heel Pain and Keeping It Away
By Alba Callejas
“Hello, I’m Alba, your local chiropodist. I’ve recently opened my new surgery, Happy Feet, at Evoca Living Resort, and I’m passionate about helping people move comfortably and confidently. Just last month, I teamed up with Lynne Lowe's GA Bootcamp and showed her clients some easy foot exercises. First, we did the stretches on our own, and then we repeated them with music. Lynne is amazing at preparing the class, and we had such a wonderful time. We finished the session by chatting, answering questions, and enjoying some fresh fruit. Thank you all so much for this wonderful class - I really had a great time! That experience reminded me how common heel pain is, especially plantar fasciitis, which is one of the main reasons people come to see me.”
That Heel Pain You Can’t Ignore
If you’ve ever had that stabbing pain in your heel when you first step out of bed in the morning, you’ll know how miserable it feels. I see it all the time - whether you’re a runner, a teacher on your feet all day, or just someone who enjoys weekend walks, plantar fasciitis can really put life on hold.
The good news is that most people don’t need injections or surgery. With the right step-by-step plan, we can calm the pain, strengthen your feet, and stop it from coming back.
Phase 1 – Easing the Pain and Getting Mobility Back
At the start, it’s all about comfort. Your tissues are irritated, so the goal is to settle things down and gently restore mobility. Here’s what I often recommend to my patients:
• Plantar fascia stretch: Use your hand to gently pull your toes back, or a towel around the ball of your foot.
• Massage with a ball or frozen bottle: Roll it under your arch for five minutes, twice a day.
• Calf stretches at the wall: Stretch both your larger calf muscle and the deeper soleus.
These simple moves ease pain and prepare your foot for recovery.
Tip I share in clinic: keep a frozen water bottle in your freezer - it’s both massage and ice therapy in one.
Phase 2 – Building Strength Step by Step
Once the pain starts to ease, we move on to building strength. This part is key to making sure the problem doesn’t return.
• Towel scrunches with your toes: Wakes up the small foot muscles that give you support.
• Heel raises: Begin with both feet, then progress to one at a time, then try lowering off a step.
• Eccentric calf lowering: Slowly drop your heel over the edge of a step - this strengthens your calves and fascia in a really powerful way.
This stage is where short-term relief turns into lasting recovery. Something I always explain to patients: strong calves work like shock absorbers, taking strain off your plantar fascia.
Phase 3 – Getting Back to Normal Life and Preventing Recurrence
Finally, we focus on function - making sure your feet are ready for the way you actually move day to day.
• Controlled barefoot walking: Helps reactivate your natural foot strength and awareness.
• Single-leg balance: Start simple, then make it harder by closing your eyes or using an unstable surface.
This is where we not only finish healing but also prevent plantar fasciitis from sneaking back.
My Takeaway for You
Plantar fasciitis can feel endless, but with the right plan, you can get better. Together we’ll work on pain relief, then strength, then function - so your feet don’t just recover, they’re protected for the future.
Healing isn’t about a quick fix; it’s about retraining your feet step by step. And as your local chiropodist here at Evoca Living Resort, I’ll be here to guide you through every stage.

SOME THINGS YOUR CAT DOES, JUST BECAUSE IT’S A CAT
The same way dogs have shared their lives with us for the last 10,000 years, and this fact have made them modify their genetics for, for example, being able to digest starch, cats have made the same for a similar period of time.
Domestication happened in a certain prehistoric moment and affected several animal species (cats, dogs, livestock, horses, Asian elephants…) and gave humans the power of dominating and modifying the environment, and improving transportation, agriculture and stockbreeding.
We owe these species (animal, but also vegetal ones, since the plants we grow for obtaining food are also “domesticated” ones) a significant part of what we are nowadays since they have provided us food, materials and workforce.
Some species, basically dogs and cats, have also “thrived”, so they no longer need to work (with some exceptions) for enjoying human company and protection. By the way: we are not the only primate species which have pets. Some social primates adopt pets the same way humans do.
In case of cats, since they are no longer necessary for controlling rodents pests, the fact that they behave like kittens during their whole lives, becomes very attractive for humans. Those feline behaviours we specially love (being playful, exploration, etc), are typical in kittens: chasing preys and playing with them is the most important training in a cat development, since it makes them learn and being in shape. An adult cat is perfectly able to chase, catch and kill a prey in a matter of seconds, with an accurate bite at the occipital area, and they don’t need to practice or learn how to do it, they are just born with this ability. They don’t need to play with the prey for learning how to catch and kill it. So, why adult cats keep doing it? Because during domestication process, juvenile
characteristics are been encouraged. Normally, cats which behave and look like kittens (round heads, big round eyes, round shape… just remember Shrek’s Puss in Boots), are more likely to be adopted. Feline breeds which look like this (British Shorthair, Exotic Shorthair) look specially lovable for us. Of course, there are other very popular breeds (Siamese, Sphynx) which look the opposite.
Domestic adult cats keep playing the same way kittens do for life. While a feral cat kills its preys in seconds and eat 100% of them, a domestic cat just eat 30% of them, just because they don’t need all those calories. So it makes the game last for longer. Your cat is not vicious and doesn’t want to make the prey suffer. It’s just a cat.
Another typical cat characteristic is their “difficult” appetite. Cats have much less taste buds at their tongue than us (20 times less), and they are unable to feel the sweet taste. So they choose their food according to smell, texture and previous experiences. Normally they prefer fatty foods (they like vanilla ice cream because of the fat, not because of the sugar) and gelatinous textures. Your cat is not picky with the food. It’s just a cat.
And finally, your cat is not silly because is unable to find a toy which is in front of its nose. It’s just because, due to its head shape, its vision has a blind spot under the chin, so it can’t see what it’s exactly in front of its head.
Your cat is special just because it’s a cat.

When arranging legal documents covering the UK while in Spain, many people primarily focus on cost or location to themselves/convenience and while these are certainly factors which must be taken into consideration as part of your overall decision, they should certainly by no means, be the primary reasons for your final choice of provider.
You should consider the following when choosing any practitioner in Spain to supply your UK legal documents:
BEWARE OF USING UNQUALIFIED, UNTRAINED AND UNINSURED PROVIDERS OF UK WILLS AND POWERS OF ATTORNEY IN SPAIN
1. Does the firm you are considering have SRA (Solicitors Regulation Authority) regulated practitioners on the team?
2. Are the drafters of the documents themselves STEP (Society of Tax and Estate Practitioners) qualified and registered?
3. Is the advice you being given coming from a qualified and certified College of Will Writers trained individual?
4. Does the company you are considering, have Professional Indemnity Insurance covering their advice and work so that if there are any issues in the future, your beneficiaries have legal recourse for compensation if required?
5. Does the provider have a UK office that your UK beneficiaries/ Attorneys can easily liaise with? If the answer is no to any of the above,
should you really be using them?
Peace of mind and confidence for you and your family when it comes to such matters, far outweighs any initial costs.
Thy Will Be Done pride themselves in having all of the above in place, with their PI insurance covering them for up to £2 million per claim if it was ever required.
You are strongly recommended to use qualified professionals when it comes to important legal matters and Thy Will Be Done can provide initial advice free of charge either over the phone or face to face in their offices in Benijofar, whichever suits you best.
Contact them today on 865 756 058 or by completing their contact form on their website at www.thywill.es Getting the wrong advice now could cost your family considerable time, money and stress in the future.

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL
THE RIGHT TYPE OF BUG!
Hope everyone has had a good summer and made lots of family memories. Maybe, now that the weather is cooling, you are looking for a fun activity in which to participate. Look no further!
Sessions for the Ladies Walking Football have recommenced after the summer break. Unfortunately, the day and time of the sessions has had to change. From the 16th September, the sessions will take place every Tuesday at 12 midday. Many of you will know that the Sports Facilities were handed over to the temporary school until further notice to provide for pupils attending there. This arrangement is restricting therefore the physical activity opportunities for the adult population in Gran Alacant. The school are trying their best to accommodate us, hence the change of day/time, but there is a worry that the situation will only worsen as he schools population grows.
In the meantime, though, feel free to come along and have a go at this fun activity. It is guaranteed to improve your mobility, mental health and social life.
For further information visit our Facebook Page at Gran Alacant’s Walking Football Community.
GA MENS WALKING FOOTBALL
The Gran Alacant Walking Football sessions are up and running again after the summer break. Following discussions with various parties, we are able to meet each Wednesday at 12 noon on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre. Please arrive around 11.50am to allow for teams to be arranged but be mindful of students who may still be around. The facility will close at 1.30pm so we need to be out of the showers by 1.15pm. Early indications are that this will be a good year with good numbers already despite the heat.
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! We play each Wednesday on the astroturf at the Polideportivo (Sports Centre) in Gran Alacant. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are quarterly social meets (combined with the women’s group) with the next meet in November doubling up as the AGM. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).
Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.
For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events.
