Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since January 2005. ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS Oscar Valenzuela Councillor of Gran Alacant & Education To the Mayor of Santa Pola and the readers of Gran Alacant Advertiser My first visit to Gran Alacant was in 1996, together with my family. The experience was so positive that, after several years renting in Gran Vista, we purchased our first apartment in El Faro in 2010, and upgraded to a larger one in 2014. We have always enjoyed living here - but lately, that enjoyment is under threat. In our view, there is far too much construction happening, with little regard for nature or the existing infrastructure - which is not being properly maintained. We fully support the two letters published in the Gran Alacant Advertiser that raise concerns about the new hotel project on Avenida Escandinavia. The issues they highlight - noise during construction, traffic congestion, and lack of emergency preparedness — are deeply worrying. To illustrate some of our own concerns, I would like to share specific examples of neglected infrastructure: • Avenida Mediterráneo, the main road into
Borja Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare Gran Alacant, is becoming overgrown due to lack of roadside trimming. This makes cycling, walking, or using mobility aids like wheelchairs and walkers increasingly dangerous. • Avenida Noruega has sidewalks and bike paths with loose tiles, posing a serious hazard to pedestrians and cyclists. Gran Alacant has many wonderful qualities - proximity to nature, opportunities for walking and cycling, and a diverse community. But these qualities are being eroded by unchecked development. Nature is being replaced by concrete, and the charm of the area is fading. My message is simple: before building more, we must take care of what we already have. Without proper maintenance and a clear plan for sustainable growth, Gran Alacant risks becoming less livable and less attractive to both residents and visitors. We hope for a pleasant and sustainable future for Gran Alacant. Sincerely, Øystein Nystad

PREVENTIVE TREATMENT AGAINST PINE PROCESSIONARY In recent weeks, preventive treatments against the pine processionary caterpillar have been carried out using Bacillus thuringiensis, variety kurstaki (Btk).
COLLECTION OF BULKY ITEMS, LEFT OUT WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE, TO BE REMOVED We once again remind residents to act responsibly and that there is a WhatsApp number available to schedule collections with the cleaning company please see the information listed on the top of this page.
This is a highly effective biological control method when applied during the early larval stages of the caterpillar. Btk acts specifically on these larvae, preventing their development and significantly reducing their population. The treatment is selective and completely harmless to other species, including people, pets, birds, bees and other beneficial insects. As it is a biological product, it leaves no residue in the environment and does not affect the natural balance of the ecosystem. Applying it at this time of year ensures effective control of the processionary caterpillar, helping to protect forested areas and improving safety in zones where pine trees are present. Work is currently being carried out in public areas of Gran Alacant. All pine groves in Santa Pola located in gardens and squares have already been treated, as well as pines within facilities such as schools, the cemetery, the traffic park, and others.

SECRETS TO STAYING YOUNG AT HEART AN INTERVEW WITH SHEILA ARTHUR At 92 years young, local legend Sheila Arthur recently proved that age is just a number by ticking off another item on her bucket list – parasailing! Soaring high above the coast with her daughter Julie by her side, Sheila’s infectious spirit and fearless attitude turned heads on the beach below. Known for her boundless zest for life, she is an inspiration to everyone who believes adventure has no age limit. BACKGROUND
Sheila and her late husband Bert made Spain their home in 1989 after moving from Croydon in Surrey. Together they raised 2 children, have 2 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. The couple shared 65 wonderful years of marriage before Bert sadly passed away 8 years ago. HOW DID YOU STAY ACTIVE BACK IN THE DAY?
In my younger years, I discovered a passion for ballroom dancing. I began at just 14 and quickly fell in love with the rhythm and grace of each style, from the smooth foxtrot and elegant tango to the lively rumba, samba, and cha-cha. I even took part in competitions through local dance schools, which made the experience even more exciting. HOW DO YOU STAY ACTIVE NOW?
My large garden keeps me happily busy throughout the year. Every season, I have a generous crop of figs, which I love sharing with friends or turning into batches of homemade fig chutney. I also enjoy swimming to stay active and this summer I took things up a notch by joining the Aqua BootCamp at Bernar’s Place. It has been a fun way to stay fit and it is great to get out and meet new people. I am also doing the
Chair Fitness classes GA BootCamps that are good fun. I also enjoy attending the GALS (Gran Alacant Ladies) events, they are such a great way to connect with new people and enjoy lovely company. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO BEING HAPPY
Keep active and always have goals to work towards. I think life passes by quickly, so it is important to make the most of it. Having something to look forward to keeps focus and gives life meaning. The key is to keep moving, both physically and mentally, and never stop growing. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
After my exhilarating parasailing adventure with my daughter, I went on a river cruise to Vienna with a good friend. We enjoyed soaking up the culture and enjoyed the ride along the river. It is always exciting to have something like to look forward to and make more great memories with loved ones. Would you like to share your secrets to staying young at heart? A Very Festive
GA CLEANUP December saw another successful litter pick, with a fantastic turnout of local volunteers meeting at the church on Avda. Noruega. Around ten people gave up an hour of their time (and even dressed in festive outfits!) to help tidy the surrounding area. Sadly, there was no shortage of rubbish, but thanks to everyone’s hard work a significant amount was collected in a short space of time. As usual, the area around Avda. Noruega proved to be a hotspot for litter, and the council was contacted to remove the collected waste. The dedication and good spirits of the group made a real difference, showing what can be achieved when the community comes together. A huge thank you goes to everyone who joined us and supported the cleanup. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and we look forward to welcoming an even bigger group to our next litter pick. Your help is always greatly appreciated!

Book of the month by Beth A tale of fantasy and romance
My Recommended Book of the Month
Finding Fern By Jessica Ann
In the quiet village of Southwell the woods appear unremarkable. But Aveline Johnson has always had a connection to them After her death her granddaughter, Fern becomes determined to uncover the truth buried deep among the trees, convinced that the secrets of her past are buried there. In the woods she finds a realm that no human has entered before - a world of woodland fae with their own secrets, dangers and desires. As Fern searches for answers, she begins to accept that she may not get what she came for, but perhaps something more powerful. Fern must make a choice - return to the safety of her old life or stay and fight for the world. This is a debut novel by a new young writer of fantasy which is an extremely popular genre of our time. This is the first of a trilogy. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

THE GUEST EDIT "I absolutely love this twopiece sweatsuit. The material is wonderfully soft and warm. When I walk the dogs in the morning, it's the perfect outfit, and it still looks stylish with the glitter sneakers and chocolate crossover bag."
"As the holidays are comming up, I chose this beautiful glitter dress, because it's festive yet subtle, and finished it off with these very comfortable black strech boots. Sabine has these crossover bags in several colors. I use them always, simply because the're so easy to carry."
"This outfit is perfect for this time of the year. Comfortable black stretch trousers with beautiful gold detailing on the pockets and matching black ankle boots. And then this gorgeous burgundy blouse completes the look. And yes ... of course, the burgundy crossover bag."

MASA SQUARE
We’re delighted to welcome our special guest, Connie, to House of Malu this month! She joined us for a lovely afternoon at the Masa Square store, exploring the latest collection, selecting her three favourite looks, and sharing what makes each one special. NAME: CONNIE LEBON “I met my husband, Paul Van der Schraelen, here in Spain and the spark was immediate. Paul had been friends for many years with Sabine from House of Malibu, and through him, Sabine also became my friend. We live close to the Masa square. My husband Paul is the owner of the successful Novapaso Estates office, for more than 23 years now, and the new office is located diagonally across from Sabine’s boutique, also on the Masa square. This gives all of us the chance to see each other more often and catch up over a cup of coffee. I am a regular customer at Sabine’s boutique because she has exactly the clothing style I adore, and Sabine always welcomes me warmly. She also gives very good professional advice on accessories and colour combinations. The nice—or better said, the honest— thing about Sabine is that she will also tell me when something doesn’t suit me. So it’s not always about selling, and that gives a really good feeling. Sabine knows her craft and is excellent at what she does.”
"Thank you, Sabine and Lou - the photo shoot was so much fun!"
Ask Dr. Soraya
In a new monthly feature, Dr Soraya Benavides an expert in Integrative and Anti-Aging Medicine, answers your questions on health and wellbeing. “I keep hearing that everyone should get a general medical check-up each year, even if they feel perfectly healthy. Why is it so important, and what kinds of issues can these routine checks detect before symptoms appear?” Cristina It helps your skin make its own collagen again, which we naturally start losing from our 50s. As that collagen comes back, the skin gets firmer and there’s a natural lifting effect. You don’t suddenly look different; you just start looking better, more supported, more rested. People usually notice something good but can’t quite tell what you’ve done. Dr. Soraya:
Many serious health problems develop quietly, without pain or obvious symptoms. A general medical check-up helps detect issues such as high blood pressure, early diabetes, cholesterol imbalances, thyroid disorders, anemia, heart rhythm changes, and early cardiovascular risk, often long before you would feel unwell. Check-ups are not only about finding disease; they help establish your personal health baseline. Comparing results over time allows us to spot small changes early, when they’re easier to manage or reverse. Feeling well is reassuring, but it’s not a medical guarantee. A check-up is preventive care, routine maintenance for your health, before problems appear. “I’ve noticed you have a Christmas promotion for Sculptra, and I keep hearing that many Hollywood celebrities swear by this treatment. What exactly makes Sculptra so special, and why is it becoming so popular - especially for those of us looking for natural-looking results?” Diane Dr: Soraya
What makes Sculptra special is that it doesn’t just fill lines.
Another big plus is that the results are long-lasting , often up to two years. So it’s not about constant touch-ups, but about improving the skin over time. That’s why so many people, celebrities included, love it. It lets you age well, without looking artificial. Just like yourself, on a very good day. "Why am I sleeping so poorly and waking up several times during the night?" - Carol Dr. Soraya:
Poor sleep and frequent night awakenings are common with age, but they should not be ignored. They may be related to light sleep, stress, pain, medications or bladder habits. Simple measures such as keeping regular sleep hours, avoiding fluids late in the evening, limiting caffeine and alcohol, staying physically active during the day and reviewing medications with your doctor can significantly improve sleep quality. When sleep problems persist, a medical assessment can help identify and treat the underlying cause. Got a question or concern? We would love to hear from you! A Celebration of Community and Compassion
In December, ASPETGA held its 5th annual “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” event at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub — and once again, the Gran Alacant community came through with heart and holiday spirit.
true ASPETGA superstar. Jackie is returning to the UK, and we will miss her energy, enthusiasm, and incredible fundraising skills more than we can say. Thank you, Jackie, for everything you’ve given to the animals and this community.
Thanks to the kindness of our neighbours and supporters, we raised a fantastic 538€ to support ASPETGA’s pet food bank and spay/neuter program, helping families in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant care for their beloved animals during hard times.
To our supporters throughout the year — thank you. Whether you’ve donated food, time, money, or just cheered us on, you are the reason we can keep doing what we do.
We’re deeply grateful to Molly Malone’s for hosting us and creating such a warm and festive atmosphere. We’d also like to thank our wonderful sponsors, Gran Alacant Properties, for their continued support and behind-the-scenes help. A big thank-you goes out to the generous local businesses who donated prizes to our charity raffle, including Jolly Roger’s, Rio Seco, La Francesinha, La Bodeguita d’Julia, La Galguita Amelie, Molly Malone’s, Gran Alacant Properties, and others. We truly appreciate your support — it makes a difference. We also want to shine a light on our incredible volunteers, who show up time and again with open hearts, big energy, and sleeves rolled up. This year, we’d like to give a special shout-out to Jackie Pugh, a
And of course, a special mention to the Gran Alacant Advertiser for their continued support — your coverage helps spread the word about our work and inspires others to get involved. From selfies with Santa to wagging tails, big hugs, and shared laughter, the event reminded us what makes this community so special. Whether you joined us for the big day or cheered us on from afar, thank you. Events like these are only possible thanks to people like you — people who believe that no one, not even a pet, should go without love and care. From all of us at ASPETGA, we wish you a joyful holiday season and a happy, hopeful New Year. With gratitude,

NATURE BATHS FOR THE SOUL As we look back on these past few months, it’s impossible not to acknowledge the cloud that has been hanging over the upper part of Gran Alacant. If you’ve been following our column, you know that we’ve dedicated quite a bit of space to the chaotic construction of the aparthotel, the cracks in our walls, the sleepless nights, and—perhaps most frustratingly—the questionable attitude of our local council. We continue fighting, because that’s what you do when something isn’t right. And we will keep fighting. But life continues. It has to. And in a year as heavy as 2025 has been for Gran Alacant—from environmental damage to administrative silence, from construction noise to community worry—we have found ourselves increasingly escaping, almost instinctively, toward places that feel gentler. Places where the air is cleaner, the world is quieter, and our nervous systems finally stop vibrating. What we have discovered—perhaps rediscovered—is the power of a “nature bath.” No, not an actual bath. A nature bath is that healing immersion in woods, rivers, mountains and open sky, famously a concept beloved of the Japanese. Something we didn’t know we needed as much as we do now. We have been spending more time in Biar lately, and it has become an unexpected refuge. The village makes it wonderfully easy to reconnect with nature. Everywhere you look there are mountains folding gently into each other, ramblas carving their way through stone, small rivers running clear, and forests—some ancient, some still young—telling their stories through their scent alone.
There is something profoundly grounding about walking those paths at sunset, when the light falls soft on the limestone and the air cools just enough to make you breathe more deeply. In Biar, nothing is rushed. And maybe that is why it has helped us cope with the speed and stress that have taken over our side of Gran Alacant lately. Yet—despite the peace—we still miss the pulse of a city. The cultural spark, the noise, the cafés, the galleries, the energy. So having Valencia just over an hour away is a gift. It allows us to enjoy city life… but only in small doses. We have become slightly “allergic” to crowds, shops and queues. Which is why, during our latest visit to Valencia, we decided to do something different: instead of diving into the bars and boutiques, we escaped inside the city to one of its quietest corners. The Jardín Botánico de Valencia is not a new discovery, but it felt brand new to us.
Perhaps because this time we arrived tired, overwhelmed, and a bit emotionally wrung out. And perhaps that is the perfect state of mind to appreciate a place like this. For those who don’t know it, the Jardín Botánico has a long, complicated history. For many years it was abandoned—left to crumble under the sun and rain like a forgotten chapter of the city’s story. It wasn’t until the late 20th century that its restoration began, slowly bringing it back to life, greenhouse by greenhouse, path by path. Today it stands, alongside the Jardines del Turia, Cabanyal, and the last remaining pockets of huerta, as one of the great green refuges of Valencia. An oasis in a concrete landscape—living proof that cities don’t have to choose between growth and beauty. What makes the Botánico special is not just the variety of plant and tree species, although that alone is astonishing. You can wander from cacti taller than you, to exotic palms, to delicate medicinal herbs, to bamboo that whispers with the slightest breeze. Some trees are centuries old— so tall and so deeply rooted that they probably pre-date the Botánico itself. Standing beneath them, you feel the same sensation as in Biar or in our beloved Clot de Galvany: the awareness that nature has been here long before us and will remain long after. We left the gardens calmer, lighter, and strangely hopeful. Cities can choose to protect their green spaces. Councils can choose to listen. Communities can choose to fight together. And nature—when we give it room—chooses to heal. So, to all Gran Alacant neighbours reading this: if you visit Valencia, take one morning and wander through the Jardín Botánico. Move slowly. Let it work on you. Consider it a nature bath—an antidote to stress, construction noise, and politics. And as we step into 2026, we wish you what we wish for ourselves: more moments in nature, more justice, more health, and more peace. Even in complicated times, we must protect what’s beautiful. See you next month,
Juan & Archie
The Christmas Fair in MASA Square raised an amazing €422.50 for ASPETGA! Thank you to everyone who attended, our regular and new stallholders, and all the bars and restaurants in MASA Square for their support. Special thanks to Sue Shepherd and The Gran Alacant Stompers for the wonderful entertainment. A heartfelt thank-you to Jackie for her many years of dedication in organising our charity fairs — she has truly made a difference in our community. As she moves on, the fairs will now be organised by Kathryn Robinson and Stella Roberts, who bring great experience and enthusiasm to the role.

Plantar Warts: Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment from a Podiatric Perspective
By Alba Callejas Plantar warts (papillomas) are benign skin lesions on the sole of the foot caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). While not dangerous, they can be painful, interfere with daily activities, and spread if untreated. They are commonly seen in podiatry clinics, especially among children, athletes, and people exposed to humid environments like pools and gyms. Hello, my name is Alba Callejas Salazar, and I am your local chiropodist at the Happy Feet Podiatry Centre, located at Evoca Living Resort.
What Are Plantar Warts? Plantar warts form when HPV enters the skin through small breaks, causing thickened, irregular growth. Unlike corns, they: • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Disrupt normal skin lines Show small black dots (clotted capillaries) Hurt more with side pressure May appear alone or in clusters (mosaic warts)
Risk Factors Walking barefoot in damp communal areas Direct contact with contaminated surfaces Excessive sweating Weakened immunity or stress Children and teenagers Symptoms Pain when walking or standing Thick, rough skin with black dots “Stone in the shoe” sensation
Diagnosis Diagnosis is usually clinical and may include visual examination and light debridement to distinguish warts from corns, fungal infections, or other skin lesions. Dermatoscopy or biopsy is rarely needed. Treatment Options Choice of treatment depends on lesion size, number, pain, and duration • •
Keratolytic acids (e.g., salicylic acid): Gradual removal with regular follow-up Cryotherapy: Liquid nitrogen to destroy tissue
First of all, I would like to wish you a very Happy New Year and all the best for 2026. This January, we are going to talk about plantar warts.
- Alba Callejas • • • • • • • • • • • •
Strong clinical acids: Effective for deep or resistant warts Electrocautery or laser: For isolated or very painful lesions Immunotherapy: For recurrent or multiple warts Prevention Wear footwear in communal wet areas Keep feet clean and dry Avoid sharing towels or shoes Manage excessive sweating Check feet regularly
When to See a Podiatrist Persistent or painful lesions Multiple or spreading warts Bleeding or colour changes Presence of diabetes, circulation, or immune disorders
Conclusion Plantar warts are common and treatable. Early diagnosis, appropriate podiatric care, and preventive measures help relieve pain, prevent spread, and reduce recurrence.

WHEN MR MONOPOLY TAKES COMMAND… Yes, we acknowledge it: we are not an NGO or a charity. We are in it for the money. Why? Simply because it is our way of making a living, and because we and our families have the bizarre habit of eating three meals a day - not to mention taxes, bills, and overhead. But we believe there is a massive difference between being in it for the money and being in it **only** or **mostly** for the money. In this era of "turbo-capitalism," money often feels like everything. This is the perfect substrate for investment funds whose philosophy is: *“I put money into your business, and you produce profit for me, no matter what it takes.”* The effects in sensitive areas like healthcare are visible; patients stop being considered human beings and are treated as "clients." You only need to look at the American healthcare system or recent scandals in Madrid to see the results. Unfortunately, these investment funds have now sunk their fangs into animal health, realizing it is an expanding business. But when economic profit is the only metric, concepts such as care, compassion, and confidence become dispensable. If I am an investment fund aiming for maximum profit, common sense dictates I must maximize income and minimize expense. The "investment fund way" achieves this by sky-rocketing prices and reducing the "human factor." Imagine an investment fund makes a vet an offer they can’t refuse. The vet stays at the practice and feels richer, but they are no longer the boss. Decisions are now made by shareholders - people who aren't veterinary surgeons, yet claim to know what’s best for the business. The new orders follow a predictable script: 1. **Inflate Prices:** Prices are deemed "ridiculously low" and must be increased sky-high. 2. **Mandatory Batteries:** Every animal must undergo a rigid battery of tests - many
of which are redundant or unnecessary. 3. **The Premium Option:** Vets are pressured to recommend the most expensive treatment, regardless of the owner's budget. 4. **Staff Cuts:** Experienced staff are replaced by inexpensive rookies to ensure no one becomes essential. The vet is then told: *“You are obliged to produce the annual benefit our shareholders decide, and God help you if you fail!”* This is the awful truth. However, these Wall Street-minded thinkers have missed a crucial detail: this business isn't like manufacturing cars. There is a deeply special, affective connection between a pet and its owner. Based on our nearly 30 years of experience, we know the average owner prefers consistency. They want the same professional from the beginning to the end of their pet’s life - someone who knows the animal and knows when it is time to let go, rather than inflating a bill with senseless procedures to delay the unavoidable. We believe in technology, but only when used rationally, not just to crush the owner’s pocket. These funds also fail to realize that what works elsewhere may not work as well in Spain. While some point to medical insurance as a solution, we see it as a double-edged sword. Like a mortgage, it can make the "upper limit" of what a person can afford disappear, allowing prices to be inflated indefinitely - at least until the insurance company refuses to pay. Despite campaigns urging us to forget our "old-fashioned" ways, we know what we want. If I have to be the last vet who maintains 100% control over every decision - deciding based on what the client needs rather than what "Mr. Monopoly" demands - then I certainly will. When it comes time to retire, we will find a colleague who shares this philosophy. Investment funds are not welcome.

ACT OF KINDNESS FUNDRAISER FOR SAN JOSE ORPHANAGE
A wonderful group of local knitters has been spreading joy throughout the community, raising funds through their beautiful handmade creations. These items were sold at Tommy’s Bar, Quicksave Supermarket, and Molly Malone’s, with fantastic support from residents and visitors alike. A huge well done goes to Pam, the chief knitter and driving force behind the project, and to Clair from Quicksave, who acted as the main donations point. Special thanks are also due to Andrea Dimech who made it all possible through her
dedication to help the orphanage every year, as well as Tommy’s Bar Wednesday Morning Club and Molly Malone’s Tuesday Morning Ladies for their continued help with sales and promotion.
The Christmas Singalong at Tommy’s raised an additional €75, bringing the final total to an impressive €1,110. This amount, along with many generous gift donations, was proudly handed over to San José Orphanage. Thank you to everyone who knitted, donated, purchased, attended events, and supported this wonderful act of kindness.
Hundreds of gifts were delivered to the San José Orphanage in Orihuela in December. The team at San José expressed their gratitude for the generous support, ensuring a memorable Christmas for all the children.

LOCAL WRITER PUBLISHES A POWERFUL FIRST NOVEL Gran Alacant resident Carmen Esteban Martín, who has called the area home for the past 21 years, has recently reached an important milestone: the publication of her first novel, Cuando Meen las Gallinas; La España que no cesa / When Hens Pee: The Spain that doesn’t cease. Written originally in Spanish and later translated into English by the author herself, the book reflects Carmen’s lifelong passion for language and her academic background in English, and other foreign languages. The novel was born from two stories that eventually intertwined: the life of Carmen’s mother’s village —a world of ordinary people, humour, hardship, and silence— and the author’s own experience confronting institutional failures within the healthcare system. What began as memory later became testimony: a narrative about what happens when power abuses the vulnerable. When Hens Pee is, at its core, an act of memory and resistance. With intelligence, wit, and emotional depth, the novel explores the tides of social change, the river of time, and the struggle for personal identity when both institutions and family betray us. Featuring unforgettable women who refuse to be defined by their destinies, it paints a vivid and, at times, uncomfortable portrait of a Spain that insists on surviving. Equal parts hilarious and stirring, the book fuses the tragic, the comic, and the magical. Its social criticism runs throughout — addressing silence, fear, class, patriarchy, and the consequences of institutional arrogance — yet always through characters who feel deeply alive. It is a work that invites readers to reflect on injustice while encouraging each of us to find our place in the world. After publishing both editions on Amazon, Carmen approached the local library to donate a free copy and propose a public reading. Although she received no response, she pressed on. Supported by neighbours and friends, she organised an independent reading at La Taberna in Urb. Sierra Mar on Friday 28 November. The event drew a warm, engaged audience who enjoyed excerpts in Spanish and English, asked questions, and
shared an evening that felt both intimate and celebratory. Carmen’s determination — from writing, to translation, to navigating silence, to organising her own event — speaks to the strength of our local creative community and the importance of supporting home-grown voices. Her journey shows what perseverance can achieve, even when official paths do not open as expected. Cuando Meen las Gallinas and its English edition, When Hens Pee, are available on Amazon/ Papelería Kevin or the author, for signature. For readers, cultural groups or anyone interested in connecting with the author, Carmen welcomes contact at 620 806 150.

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP With the halfway point of the season almost here, Elche have maintained a midtable position, and there’s still a lot of interest and excitement locally for the La Liga campaign. Home matches see the local supporters group meeting at Reckless Bar and carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards. Away games are screened at Reckless Bar for the group to watch together. The group currently consists of a large number of season ticket holders, and a growing number of regular match attendees. Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand. Tickets for matches can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es - usually during the week of the game.
January is derby month with 3 games in total against regional rivals, beginning with a home match to start the year against Villarreal on Saturday 3 January at 18:30. Sandwiched between successive away days in Valencia, there is the visit to Elche of Sevilla on the weekend of 18th January (date and time TBC). January ends, or February begins, with the visit here of Barcelona on the weekend of Saturday 31st January/Sunday 1st February (date and time TBC). Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’ ¡Mucho Elche!

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL NEW YEAR - NEW YOU?! As we welcome in a New Year after overindulging during the festivities of December, many of us decide to try a new hobby, to get fit or simply spend more time with friends. All these aspirations can be fulfilled simply by coming along to the weekly sessions of the Women’s Walking Football. The philosophy of Walking Football centres on accessibility, active ageing and holistic well-being (physical, mental and social) for individuals who cannot participate in traditional high impact sport due to age, injury or physical limitations. A major component of this philosophy is to combat loneliness and depression by getting people out of the house, fostering camaraderie and building a supportive community. The social aspect for us in Gran Alacant is as important as the physical exercise. The post session refreshments at El Tio Chato are as enjoyable as the exercise itself. If you want to give Walking Football a try (or even just come along to watch) make contact
Join us for a fun workout! WOMEN'S SESSION EVERY THURSDAY 12PM MEN'S SESSION EVERY WEDNESDAY 12PM WHERE: ASTROTURF PITCH, GA SPORTS CENTRE
Hello all! Happy New Year to everyone and may 2026 be a great year for you.Thank you to everyone who has attended and supported the sessions throughout 2025 and we look forward to seeing you all at some point this year. New faces are always welcome! After a brief festive shut down, the Gran Alacant Walking Football sessions will be up and running (walking) again on Wed 14th January. We meet each Wednesday at 12 noon on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre. We have a multinational membership where the common language is...football. If you want to come along, please arrive around 11.50am to allow for teams to be arranged but be mindful of students who may still be around. The facility now closes at 1pm so we need to be out of the showers quickly! Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! We play each Wednesday on the astroturf at the Polideportivo (Sports Centre) in Gran Alacant. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are quarterly social meets (combined with the women’s group). So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch. For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events.

GEOFF'S
Hi, my name is Geoff and I have been asked by Lou to challenge you every month with a few teasers. I hope you enjoy them. I first came to GA in 2001 and bought my house in 2002 where I have been a regular visitor ever since. You will see me at the quizzes, or out and about, running or cycling. If you see me come and say hi, or, just give me a cheery hello. I am also a big lover of live music and try to see as many live acts as I can.
