OUR GA COUNCILLORS

Q: Sign Posts

Hi congrats on a great magazine for our local community. Is it possible to enquire with the local council about renewing the signs on the lovely walk from gran alacant to Santa POLA. Via the lighthouse etc.

We decided to try this the other day after reading several times about it. (Although being a bit of a trek over 2 hours on rough ground) we ventured off looking at the info sheets it seemed quite easy following the sign posts as we made our way. The problem we encountered was that every sign post we came across was unreadable (please see pics). Is there a possibility these could be upgraded. Many thanks. Phil

Borja

Borja Merino's Reply: Hello Phil - yes, they will be changed soon within the European subsidy received by the City Council.

Q: Letter boxes

Dear councillor, I would like to inform you of the very poor condition of the mailbox in the "calle de Creta", near the dog park.

Is it possible to renew it or have it repaired, as I suspect it will fall over soon! Below you will find photos of the current condition of this mailbox. Hoping for a speedy and favorable outcome.

Yours faithfully, Herman

Borja Merino's Reply:

Good afternoon, the mailboxes are private and must be taken care of by the neighbors themselves to change them.

Q: Urban bus

Hi Lou, once again outside the peak tourist season residents have to endure the minimal bus service timetable that operated during Covid, not even the more extensive schedule that operated previously.

I contacted Vectalia who operate the bus service but they said the nature of the contract and therefore the frequency is wholly determined by the Council. The population of Gran Alacant is continuously increasing and we are told to use public transport and reduce car use.

But we have an abysmally poor bus service outside the peak tourist season when there is no service later in the afternoon or evening. This effects the people of Gran Alacant and local businesses. Can councillors be asked when the people of Gran Alacant can expect to have a decent public bus service?

I am sure a reasonable bus fare increase would be acceptable to people if it will

assist the provision of a fit for purpose service that meets our needs. We deserve better than this shoddy level of service. Pat

GA Advertiser reply:

Pat, yes, we totally agree with you and we have asked both of our councillors to review the current situation and expand the time table at least for the high season.

Q: GA recycling centre

Hi, update on the garden waste facility up the hill. Last week it wasn’t open when we tried to access it. Today it was open, but as you can see in a terrible condition. John

GA Advertiser reply:

Thank you for your update John. We have asked the councillor of cleaning to improve the condition of the recycling centre.

Gran Alacant News

ONGOING WASTE ISSUES IN GRAN ALACANT

Santa Pola Council has shared new photos showing illegal dumping around Gran Alacant that has appeared just 24 hours after the same area was cleaned.

Littering remains a serious issue in our community and while the council teams work tirelessly to keep Gran Alacant clean, it’s up to all of us to do our part.

A reminder to all residents and visitors to please dispose of your waste responsibly.

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP AT THE LIGHTHOUSE VIEWPOINT

On 30th March, Santa Pola Council organised a volunteer clean-up day around the lighthouse viewing point. Specialists equipped with safety gear tackled the more challenging areas along the slope, while volunteers focused on clearing the accessible parts of the site.

Last year’s initiative, held in April, saw 30 volunteers cover an impressive 40,000 m², collecting around 30 kilos of rubbish!

FERAL CAT FEEDING STATION REBUILT IN GRAN ALACANT

At the end of March, a feral cat feeding station on Calle Holanda 45 was deliberately destroyed. Thanks to the quick response and dedication of local volunteers, the station was rebuilt in no time and is once again providing vital support to the colony.

These council-licensed volunteers use their own resources to feed, care for, and sterilise the registered feral cat colonies across Gran Alacant. Their work is essential in managing the cat population and promoting a healthy coexistence within our community.

If you would like to support their efforts, donations of cat food are always welcome. Contributions can be dropped off with Rebeca, a licensed volunteer, at GAHomefinders in Centro Comercial Gran Alacant.

Two fugitives who escaped from Vale de Judeus prison in Portugal in September 2024 were tracked down thanks to Gran Alacant's video surveillance cameras, which identified their vehicle's license plate.

The two individuals, considered highly dangerous with extensive criminal records across multiple countries, had been living in Gran Alacant before being captured at a gas station in Alicante in February this year.

NEW SPEED CONTROLS INSTALLED TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY IN GA

In response to requests from local residents, speed control systems have been installed in key areas to enhance security. A recent radar check recorded a vehicle travelling at 86 km/h on Avenida del Mediterráneo, where speed limits are set at 30 km/h and 50 km/h, depending on the stretch.

This particular road is also used by bicycles, electric scooters, and other personal mobility vehicles, making excessive speed especially dangerous.

RESCUE OPERATION NEAR LIGHTHOUSE VIEWPOINT

In April, a helicopter was called in to assist in the rescue of an individual who suffered a fall near the Mirador del Faro. The victim, which witnesses described as intoxicated, got too close to the edge, slipped, and became trapped on a ledge. Two friends

came to the rescue - but also became trapped and needed to be rescued.

The incident required the co-ordination of three local police patrols, Guardia Civil officers, an ambulance, and the Fire Department, which arrived by helicopter and a ground crew.

Fortunately, the individual came away with minor injuries but his car was towed away due to lack of insurance.

This incident serves as an important reminder for both residents and visitors to use extreme caution when exploring scenic - but potentially hazardous - areas like the Lighthouse Viewpoint. Carelessness, especially when alcohol is involved, poses a serious risk and places additional strain on emergency services.

Thank You

Good morning Lou, I don't know if this is the right channel, but I would like to enclose a thank you to Santa Pola town hall, you also have to recognise when things are done well.

Many thanks to the staff responsible for carrying out the III Feria del Libro on Sunday 6th April, to the people of the Santa Pola town hall, the Gran Alacant library, the local bookshop and other associations that have collaborated. It is nice to see how, by means of classic wooden games, these cultural events are brought closer to the youngest people, so that little by little they can immerse themselves, if they want to, in the wonderful world of reading. A perfect event, with a pedestrian zone, options to buy books, signings, instructive children's games, reminders not to smoke in the area and all free of charge. Thank you and for more editions like this, please. Great work team.

Regards, David (Translated from Spanish)

Book of the month by Beth

Looking for a new series to read then this may be it!

My Recommended Book of the Month Orphan X

Evan Smoak is a man with skills, resources, and a personal mission to help those with nowhere else to turn.

He is also a man with a dangerous past.

Chosen as a child, he was raised and trained as an Orphan - an off-the-books black box program designed to create the perfect deniable intelligence asset: an Assassin.

Evan was Orphan X - until he broke with the programme and used everything he learned to disappear. But now someone’s on his tail. Someone with similar skills and training who will exploit Evan’s secret new identity as The Nowhere Man to eliminate him.

This is the first of The Orphan X series - (the 10th book has recently been published). I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Pure escapism and perfect to relax and read in the sunshine.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

We enjoyed a fabulous lunch with 40 lovely ladies at Gourmet Indian in April where we raised 101 euros for SATs our local animal charity. Sandy, won the raffle and was treated to a free lunch donated by Pami at Gourmet Indian. Food and service was wonderful by the way.

Our Friendly Coffee-Breakfast was held at Molly Malones where David baked some lovely homemade scones and we had a great chat in the sunshine.

SECRETS OF A HAPPY MARRIAGE

AN INTERVEW WITH JOAN & CHRIS

This month we meet Joan and Chris Harding from Surrey in South West of London, England. They have 2 sons who live in Bedford, 2 granddaughters and 1 great grandson. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary earlier this year.

How long have you been living in Spain?

“We came to Spain 21 years ago. Our dear friend died of cancer so we decided to enjoy life and retire early. Originally we lived in a big house in Busot with a beautiful big garden and pool then downsized and moved to Gran Alacant on Santara Resort about 10 years ago as we were spending so much time here with the Bowling Club.”

How many years have you been married? “61 years this January.”

Tell us about your first date

Joan: “We met at school. I was 9 and Chris was 11. We were friends for years before we started dating. I think I was 15 and Chris was 17 on our first date. We use to meet on a Sunday morning.

It’s hard to remember our first date as it was so long ago, but we think we went to the cinema and sat in the back row!”

Tell us about your wedding day

Joan: “It was freezing, it was January and there was snow on the ground. We had our reception in my mum’s house. We didn’t have a honeymoon, as we were moving into our first rented accommodation, which had an outside toilet. To get to the toilet we had to go through our neighbour’s kitchen. Our neighbour only had one leg and a tin bath in his kitchen. One time I had to pass him having a bath!”

Tokyo Olympics. Chris worked nightshift in the printing industry for 16 years. He comes from a printing family. Chris was elected full time national official for National Graphical Association (NGA) and my first job was for the GPO (General Post Office) as a Telephonist.

Have you had any tough times and if so how did you get through them?

Joan: “Money was tight, we didn’t have much. We managed to scrape enough money together to rent a TV to watch the

What is the best thing about your relationship?

“We have fun and we like to laugh a lot. We are interested in similar things politically and sports wise and we both love our bowls.

“ Chris is the Chairman and Joan is the Secretary at the Montemar Bowls and Social Club.

What’s your TOP TIP for a HAPPY Marriage?

Chris: “Working together and working at the relationship.”

Joan: “Chris has always been supportive and it helps that we have fun together.”

Would you like to share your secrets of a happy marriage?

MEET YOUR GRAN ALACANT NEIGHBOURS

Ruth, husband Peter and dog Sandra arrived in Spain from Northumberland in early August 2021 at the height of Covid. There were one of the first to come to Spain after Brexit on the NLV (Non Lucrative Visa) and still have a year and a half to go before they qualify for full residency in Spain.

WHY DID YOU MOVE TO SPAIN?

To be honest we hadn’t even discussed moving to another country until Covid happened. All of a sudden we were at home 24/7 and, as ridiculous as this might sound, we started to notice the weather. We thought about retirement and how much our lives were going to be affected by the cold, wind and endless grey skies, and decided to move to a sunnier climate. It took a few months to sell the house, cars, motorbikes, stuff we didn’t want to bring. We applied to the Edinburgh consulate in May 2021, we were interviewed in June, received our visas in July, and moved in August.

After viewing a few properties and deciding we wanted space above all else, we bought a villa in Hondon Valley with 7500m2 of land. Perfect for our dog, a little shitzu cross Sandra, great for test riding motorbikes and not overlooked, or so we thought! Sadly, after a year, I realised we had made a big mistake.

We decided to sell up and move closer to the coast, and ended up where we are now on the outskirts of Gran Alacant.

WHAT DID YOU USED TO WORK AS?

I worked in engineering. Initially with a truck company as their first female After Sales Engineer. I then worked in the oil and gas industry as a Commercial Operations Engineer on pipeline inspection contracts on and offshore. I went onto Sales Engineer designing and selling offshore umbilical pipelines, then finally to the power generation sector where I worked in project management and quality roles on gas and wind turbines, components for the remaining coal fired power stations, as well

as turbines for nuclear submarines.

Towards the end of my career, I volunteered as an Ambassador for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) presenting in schools to encourage girls into engineering. I was one of the only women I knew to be working at that level in those industries. It took me 20 years to get equal pay, but I am pleased to say the attitudes have changed a lot, and towards the end of my career I didn’t suffer anywhere near the discrimination I received at the start. I was 56 when I left work, but I still manage an online group (circa 1000 followers) to preserve the history of power generation in the UK.

WHERE DOES YOUR LOVE OF MOTORBIKES COME FROM?

As teenagers, my brother and I used to tear around the coal pit heap on old bikes in the area we lived. Everyone did it. Things were different in the 70s and 80s and having a motorbike brought you freedom. By the time I took my test, the dreaded two-part test had come into effect, where you had to balance going slowly around cones which was really challenging. I was certainly the first girl that I knew who did that test. As soon as I passed, I bought a Kawasaki Z650 and went as fast as I could up and

down the M1 to celebrate. Unfortunately, I was in race one day with a bloke on a huge bike who eventually signalled me to pull over. The bloke was a Police Officer but I’m relieved to say he let me off.

HOW DO YOU KEEP BUSY?

I attend as many of the GAL’s (Gran Alacant Ladies) events and GA Bootcamp classes as I can. I do a bit of Spanish every day, regular language exchange with my Spanish neighbour, brain training puzzles and visit my cousin in Murcia once a week.

As a couple, we try to eat out and explore new places each week. Apart from that we look after our dog, do the housework, the gardening and I enjoy little projects to make our house a home.

TELL US ABOUT THE LADIES DRIVING IN SPAIN FACEBOOK PAGE

There was no licence exchange agreement when we first came here. We could only use our UK licences legally for 6 months so we both decided to take Spanish driving test. The theory was difficult, and in places technical, so a girl from Madrid and I started a Facebook group to help ourselves and others.

We quickly had 750 members and by January 2023, we had 71 women who had passed the test in Spain. I passed the theory in December 2021 and the practical in January 2022, but left the group once the exchange agreement came into force handing it over the Australian and American women for whom there would be no agreement made.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE LIVING IN SPAIN?

Trying to make sure that we are doing everything we need to do and that we are doing it right.

We knife and fork our way through Spanish bureaucracy ourselves as much as we can and try to sort out real and fake information on the internet.

WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?

The weather, being able to swim in the sea, being able to afford a property with space, learning new things and making new friends.

A TRIP TO SPANISH BARBIE WORLD

If you head inland from Alicante on the motorway A7 towards Alcoi, you pass over the Maigmó Pass into the beautiful Foia de Castalla valley. This broad green valley contains a number of historic towns. Our destination in early April was the town of Onil. This pleasant town of 7,500 inhabitants has two special claims to fame. It is the location of one of the most spectacular gardens in our region. It is also home to the wonderful Doll Museum which celebrates the town’s history of doll and toy manufacture which includes the Spanish branch of the Playmobil company and “Nancy”, Spain’s answer to Barbie.

Our visit to the town was made as part of the Mediterranean Garden Society, which we have written about previously. The Alicante branch’s spring trip was to the gardens of the Casa Tápena. These gardens are administered by Alicante Natura which is an agency of the provincial government of Alicante Province and maintains 11 different nature sites in our province. The gardens at Casa Tápena are relatively recent having been created in 2002. They consist of a number of different parts reflecting different natural environments such as wetlands and mediterranean terrain. There is a formal terraced garden, a secret garden and even a maze. Even those without a

specific interest in gardening or nature will enjoy the variety of spaces contained within this single garden.

The first thing that strikes one is the scale of the gardens, they are huge with wonderful sweeping views over the surrounding landscape, in truth parts of them feel more like the grounds of a royal palace than a public park! This is partly due to the fact that the formal part of the gardens is laid out in the classical Spanish style with broad walkways and regular tanks of water surrounded by formal planting. It is quite impressive to think that the garden is only a little over 20 years old. Other areas of the gardens are more natural in style and there is a focus on local indigenous flora. We very much enjoyed our visit to the gardens. It is important to allow sufficient time to properly explore the entire site, especially if one wishes to get lost in the maze! We would suggest a morning can be devoted to a visit. Entrance to the gardens is free of charge.

Our other reason for visiting Onil was to tour the Doll Museum, Museo de la Muñeca. This museum celebrates the town’s history of toy making and in particular the design and manufacture of dolls. The museum has an extensive collection of children´s dolls dating back to the 19th century. The oldest items in the collection are wonderful and fragile survivals from a past age. However, it is the more recent items that really claim one’s attention. These include Spain’s version of Barbie, a very glamorous doll known as “Nancy”, whom one suspects lives in Marbella or Majorca. Nancy doesn’t appear to have had a male partner so unfortunately there is no Spanish “Ken” on display, although Nancy’s views on the matter are not recorded!

We found the museum fascinating but to be honest quite unnerving at times; if like us you find dolls a little creepy then be prepared….the collection contains some frankly bizarre creations including a very fierce, almost angry looking, flamenco doll and a couple of Princess Diana dolls whose eyes seem to follow one round the room as if pleading for help…

An entire section of the museum is dedicated to the town’s most famous company- Playmobil. These action figures originated in Germany but have been produced for the Iberian market in Onil for many years and have something of a cult following having been part of most Spaniards’ childhoods. The museum has a

huge display of different tableaux featuring the figures in different situations, our favourite was the pirate scene with the little plastic men swashbuckling their way to treasure island! We challenge even the most jaded adult not to enjoy this part of the museum.

Onil also contains a number of historical buildings which are well worth a visit. The most important is the palace-fortress which is now the town council building, this magnificent structure is a remarkable survival of a fortified noble town palace from the late spanish renaissance. One is able to wander through the courtyard, cloisters and public rooms of the palace. The town also has a number of other museums and art galleries.

We recommend a visit to Onil, few towns can boast such a concentration of different attractions.

Gran Alacant

When Neil and Jane appeared on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun, their daughter Kelly had one clear instruction: “Don’t be one of those time-wasting couples!” Fortunately, they weren’t.

It all started when Neil excitedly announced to his family that he was “going to be on the telly.” Cue some eye rolls and cringing - but sure enough, Neil and Jane found themselves house-hunting in sunny Alicante, searching for the perfect holiday home with the help of presenter Leah Charles-King. Despite filming in the middle of one of the region’s worst storms in nearly a century, spirits remained high (though Jane’s hair and a few umbrellas weren’t quite so lucky).

Armed with a budget of £110,000, they viewed several properties with a wishlist that included space for the whole family and easy access to the beach. Eventually, they made an offer on a charming threebedroom townhouse in Gran Alacant - and bought it for a fantastic £106,723, complete with furnishings.

Two years on, that house has become a much-loved second home for Neil, Jane, and their extended family. Recently refurbished, it now comfortably sleeps eight and includes a sunny patio, a roof terrace, and access to a shared pool - all just ten minutes from the airport.

Located a short stroll from Masa Square, the home is right at the heart of a thriving British expat community. The area offers all the comforts of home - from hearty English breakfasts and Sunday roasts at local favourites like The Belfry, to friendly staff who remember your order and generous “holiday measures” at the bar.

While Spanish cuisine is available, it’s clear that this part of Gran Alacant caters to many Brits seeking sunshine without sacrificing familiarity. And it suits Neil just fine. A fan of karaoke nights and good

company, he’s become something of a local personality - regularly belting out classics like Copacabana and Dignity at The Pub. Even resident singer Kev doesn’t seem to mind handing over the mic.

But Neil and Jane’s story is about more than just sunshine and singalongs. Their home, now lovingly renamed Casa Jai, holds special meaning. The name is a tribute to Jane’s late mother, Pearl, who left an inheritance that helped make the purchase possible. Pearl affectionately called Jane “Jai,” and now her memory lives on in this special place.

What started as a televised adventure turned into a genuine lifestyle upgrade. “We’ve always wanted to escape the grey skies of Britain,” the couple said on the programme. “Gran Alacant offers the best of both worlds - sunshine, relaxation, and still a touch of home.”

From their very first viewing to now, Neil and Jane’s journey is a heartwarming example of how dreams can turn into everyday lifewith a little help from A Place in the Sun and a lot of love for their new community.

ILLITERACY AGAINST SCIENCE

30 years ago I was a trainee at Jerez zoo. In those days, northern bald ibis reintroduction program was at its first stages. Northern bald ibis is not a famous and popular species, like imperial eagle or Himalayan tiger are. We are talking of a strange, black bird with a long red curved beak, and a red featherless head. When watching ancient Egypt hieroglyphs, the long beaked bird which appears in all of them is this, since it was a sacred animal in those days, is this bird.

Reintroduction program is active at this moment in Spain, because the only place where they live a free life is Morocco. There are about 1200 individuals remaining worldwide, so we are talking of a really endangered species, and, besides, their habitat has been dramatically reduced these last years. This is the reason why reproduction and releasing at their natural environment programs are so important. Reproduction centre is located in Austria, where human foster mothers help the chicks from the moment they are born, developing a strong bond.

When the chicks are able to fly, those foster mothers (two women) guide the birds from Austria to Southern Spain and Italy. How do they do it? They use ultralight aircrafts, so the birds follow their “mothers” for hundreds of kms through Europe, making stopovers in Germany, France and Spain. Anybody remembers the movie “Fly away home”?

This program works. Birds incorporate GPS, so scientists know all the time where they are, if they join a group of wild birds, etc.

So far, so good: international and interdisciplinary cooperation that allows to save an endangered iconic bird.

Now, some bad news: at least 6 of these birds are been shot dead in Spain, specifically in Extremadura, one of them in

a hunting ground, probably by a hunter, and the other five by a man with an airgun from his terrace. Of course, they have been taken to trial.

All this economic, human, scientific effort is been destroyed in seconds by somebody who thought shooting peaceful, non threatening and not looking similar to any other bird which can be legally shot species was a good idea. Of course, this last fact proves the slaughter was done intentionally.

Of course, some conservationist NGO’s such as SEO Birdlife and Ecologistas en Acción have reported the case. They describe it as something equivalent to a hate crime, produce on one hand by anticonservationist and pro-hunting policies, and on the other hand by human stupidity.

Here is some info about the case: https:// www.publico.es/sociedad/muerte-tirosextremadura-seis-aves-peligro-extinciondetras-esto-discurso-odio.html

Unfortunately, this is just the tip of the iceberg. We know the fate of these birds because they carried a GPS. But, what about all those others which don’t?

We all also know shooting is not a problem exclusively for wildlife, but for domestic pets. We can help stopping all these crimes, for example, by reporting to Seprona (Guardia Civil environmental group).

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP

A group of international fans in Gran Alacant regularly watch Elche football games. Home matches see the group usually meeting at different bars around GA, including their new home at Reckless Bar. The group, primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards.

Tickets can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.

Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand.

After an inconsistent start to the season, a great run of form has meant Elche are

in the conversation for promotion from Segunda - the second division of Spanish football, with a title challenge now ongoing in an incredibly tight league. A final push could bring a return to La Liga and games against Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Home games in May are against Levante on the weekend of 11 May, and Malaga on the weekend of 25 May - the date and time of both games are still to be confirmed.

Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’ ¡Mucho Elche!

GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS

There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.

We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.

Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.

As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.

If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp: 00353 / 87 991 6020

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL

As the temperature finally starts to rise on the Cost Blanca, so do the numbers of ladies taking the plunge and attending our weekly sessions. Women who have never kicked a football before are giving it a try and surprising themselves by coming back the following week! All of the squad enjoy the work out and the socialisation not to mention the banter!

Walking Football events are growing at a fast pace in Spain with a Ladies National Walking Football team currently under development. This team will represent the country in future tournaments and is an exciting development for the sport.

I hope you all had a great Easter and those of you here on holiday didn´t let the cooler than usual weeks spoil your break. At least we have walking football to burn off all those extra calories from Easter eggs! It has been great to see lots of new faces and we have a truly international feel to the group now.

October will see Torrevieja host the 2025 Walking Football World Nations Cup. More than 45 nations with 120 teams from around the world have now officially registered to take part – we of course are a little way off this standard but one day...

The 2025 Walking Football World Nations Cup will be the biggest Walking Football event ever held in Spain and will bring thousands of visitors to the area. Teams will include Men’s over 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and Women’s over 40’s, 50s and 60s. Our Group will be going along purely to watch how it’s really done!

Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! If you wish to take part, Gran Alacant Walking Football club meets each Wednesday at 11am on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). The cost is only 1 euro per session. Please arrive around 10.50am to allow for teams to be arranged. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).

Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.

For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events. If you get hold of the May copy quickly then the next social event will be on the first Tuesday in May with the venue to be confirmed. The next one will be in August.
