Oscar Valenzuela Councillor of Gran Alacant & Education
Q: A couple of suggestions Hi Lou, how are we? I'm attaching a couple of suggestions I have for the Gran Alacant area, in case you think it's worth discussing them in an issue of the magazine or with a council member:
1. Install push-button pedestrian traffic lights along Avenida del Mediterráneo, since I often don't know if cars are going to stop when I'm crossing with my baby, especially when they're going uphill. I think these traffic lights would improve safety and prevent potential personal accidents.
2. On Avenida del Mediterráneo, descending toward El Carabassí beach and where it meets the road leading to the Virgin Mary stand, when I go down with my baby's stroller, there are very steep stretches damaged by trees and other elements, which leads to a steep incline and a very unsafe feeling. Add to that the speed of cars going downhill, surely over 30 km/h, and there are no guardrails or anything. I think fixing the sidewalk and putting in some guardrails could help with pedestrian safety.
Borja Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare
3. On Avenida del Mediterráneo between Avenida Oceanía and Calle La Rioja, there are a couple of loose UNE barriers. They move when you step on them at a corner and can be lifted. Please make sure that if you step on them with my baby at that point, we don't have an incident.
4. At the exit from Calle Cataluña, opposite, a mirror could be placed to help vehicles exit. As you can see in person or on Google Maps, visibility when exiting is reduced by a stone lamppost on the left, which forces vehicles to pull far out onto the road and avoid them. Furthermore, the residential development across the street has already installed one of these mirrors for exiting their garages. This would be a good way to prevent accidents.
5. On Avenida Escandinavia, near the old local police station, there are some hedges that prevent pedestrians from crossing comfortably. My baby stroller and I are constantly bumping into each other. Could you please trim them? It would improve pedestrian safety.
Thank you in advance, and I hope something can be fixed. Have a nice afternoon. David
A: Borja's reply
We forward suggestions and complaints to the responsible departments for further handling.
Q: No Smoking Sings
Hello Lou, and Happy Easter, I'd like to comment, if possible, on the request to the councilors to please remind us about the smoking ban in playgrounds. I think it would help people if signs were posted specifically indicating this, just as there are signs for not allowing dogs or not playing ball. Thank you for contributing to a healthy coexistence. Best regards, David
GA Advertiser reply: We have asked our councillor to consider your suggestion.
Q: Broken railings Clot of Galway
Dear Lou, I am sending you these photos of the broken railings at the junction of Av del Carabasi and Via Camino. These have been broken for a long time and look very unsightly. As Gran Alacant is a seaside resort and has many nationalities visiting every year is it not in the interest of the Spanish Tourist Board to keep the place looking well?
I hope you can send this email to the relevant dept in Santa Pola please. Many thanks, Kay
GA Advertiser reply: Thank you for your idea Kay. We have forwarded your email to our councillors as requested.
Q: Dropped kerbs
Hi Lou, Thank you for publishing my letter about the dropped kerbs. I would like to point out to Oscar that its not the zebra crossings that are a problem its the lack of drop kerbs between Santara and the two exits from Monte Faro, the kerbs there are just too high for wheel chair/mobility scooter users to negotiate. Once passed those exits provided one keeps to the school side there are no more problems. The opposite side of the road where the Farmacia is, is a different story. The pavement is not really wide enough to allow safe access for wheel chair/ mobility scooter users. The lamp posts are impossible to pass safely because the gap between them and the kerb is too narrow. But that isn’t a problem as the school side is more than adequate for wheel chair/ mobility scooter users despite the school building site taking way half the pavement. The problem is as I said at the beginning in of this email…is the kerbs at the Montefaro exits. Hence the need to drive down the road and be subjected to oncoming traffic
round the bend. They come quite quickly… the worst is if my husband meets a bus!!!! all we are asking for is an amendment to the kerbs at Montefaro. That would be really appreciated. And would ensure any wheel chair/moblitiy scooter user can safely travel along the pavement passed the bins and passed Montefaro without having to use the road. Thank you in anticipation, Jeanie
GA Advertiser reply:
We have made our councillors aware and hopefully we will see improvements in this area when they put new road system into place once the school is completed.
Q: Brown Organic bins
Further to my previous email a few days ago... we went to empty our organic waste into the brown bin today, but they are locked! What's that all about? How are we meant to use them? Any clues? And if we aren't meant to use them then why are they there? Do you have any information about this at all?
Also following on from my suggestion about recycling options at Mercadona, their bins are just inside and to the left. We went there today to empty our organic waste bin and take our soft plastic for recycling. I hope that's helpful. Thanks, Nicky x
GA Advertiser reply:
We asked our councilor Borja and he tells us the brown bins are only accessible to large producers of organic waste such as hotels and restaurants. It doesn't look like the bins will be made available for the general public.
VE Day 80th Anniversary 8th May 2025 in Masa Square
RESULTS OF THE GRAN ALACANT & LA MARINA ROYAL BRITISH LEGION AUCTION
Supporting Veterans in La Marina and Gran Alacant
The Royal British Legion held a successful charity auction at Masa Square during VE Day celebrations, raising funds to support veterans in La Marina and Gran Alacant.
The weather, thankfully, held up well despite early forecasts predicting thunderstorms, which had been a major concern leading up to the day. The sunny intervals and gentle breeze created the perfect atmosphere for the event, allowing the celebrations and auction to proceed smoothly without any interruptions.
Acknowledging Generosity
The event organisers expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the auction. Donations included a variety of items, ranging from artwork, meal vouchers, WW11 & WW1 memorabilia, a tattoo, bottles of fine liquor and even Personal Training sessions, each donation playing a significant role in making the auction a success.
Special thanks go out to: The London Tavern, Dave Bouvmeester Tattoo Artist, Quesada Fish & Chip restaurant in Quesada, La Piedra Restaurant GA , Azafran Indian Restaurant Masa Square, Gran Alacant Insurance Company, G.A Santara Centre, GA Bootcamp thanks to Lynne Lowe, GA Homefinders, Anne Conron RBL Member, Dale Dempster Handyman Santa Pola, Stuart Swallow local GA Artist, FWR Eurocars Frank Roscoe, James Bar & Grill Masa Square GA, thanks goes out to James, Molly Malones and lastly Patagonia Steak restaurant.
Funds Raised
The auction generated an impressive total of €578.00. This amount will directly benefit the veterans supported by the Royal British
Legion, helping to provide crucial assistance to those who have served their country.
The total event raised an incredible €1600 euros - thank you to Paul Kane, Joan Kane, Julie Parker, Deborah Sutton and Finn for the fantastic work organising and running this successful event as well as Jane and Ella for the cakes baked.
Impact of the Effort
The funds raised underscore the community's commitment to honouring and aiding veterans. The Royal British Legion continues to serve as a vital organisation, ensuring that those who dedicated their lives to service receive the support they deserve.
As promotions executive for the Royal British Legion, I was truly amazed by the turnout and the infectious enthusiasm of the bidders. The atmosphere was electric with excitement as people eagerly competed for their desired items. It was particularly delightful to witness the joy and satisfaction of those who won their bids, each victory celebrated with cheers and laughter.
Special recognition goes to Jane Pugh, whose spirited efforts as auctioneer ensured each item fetched the highest possible amount. Her charisma and knack for encouraging bidders with humour and charm made her a cornerstone of the event’s success. From priceless memorabilia to enticing meal vouchers, every piece that went under the hammer contributed to the remarkable total raised for such a worthy cause.
Continuing Support
The success of the auction reflects the collective spirit of gratitude and generosity. It serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to assist veterans, not only in La Marina and Gran Alacant but across all communities.
Events such as this auction highlight the power of community and the meaningful impact of shared contributions. The Royal British Legion remains grateful for the unwavering support it receives from individuals and businesses alike.
A BIG THANKS TO YOU ALL!

1800s China. Tightly bound feet, or ‘golden lilies’, are the mark of an honourable woman, eclipsing beauty, a rich dowry and even bloodline in the marriage stakes
When Little Flower is sold as a maidservant - a muizai- to Linjing, a daughter of the prominent Fong family, she clings to the hope that one day her golden lilies will lead her out of slavery. Not only does Little Flower have bound feet, uncommon for a muizai, but she is extraordinarily gifted at embroidery, a skill associated with the highest class of a lady.
Resentful of her talents, Linjing does everything in her power to thwart Little Flower’s escape. But when scandal strikes the Fongs, both young women are cast out to the Celibate Sisterhood, where Little Flower’s artistic prowess catches the eye of a nobleman. His attention threatens not only her improved status, but her life - the Sisterhood punishes disobedience with death. And if Linjing finds out, will she sabotage Little Flower to reclaim her power, or will she protect her?
I really enjoyed this book. It is an uplifting tale of 2 women from opposite sides of society and their extraordinary journey of sisterhood, betrayal, love and triumph.

Rumour has it that the organisers of these popular trips had to book two separate dates to transport those wishing to visit Toledo and Cuidad Real, as there was not a hotel that could accommodate 100 visitors in one trip. The truth (probably) is that they heard we were coming and decided they could only cope with 50 of us at any one time. Whichever is true, the fact is that this was yet another well organised, meticulously planned, highly enjoyable and reasonably priced trip.
Alison Clark and Neil Lloyd (organisers) go all out to ensure that these trips encompass everything Spanish -i.e. culture, history, architecture, food and of course wine. This trip to Toledo did not fail to deliver all the above.
Our party set off in a timely manner on the 21 st April for a 3-night stay at the Eurostar Hotel in Toledo. Travel time was estimated to be 4 hours but a refreshment stop, bingo on board and a short trip to see the famous Consuegra Windmills en-route meant that time passed quickly and pleasantly.
The Consuegra Windmills, featured in the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, have been restored to former glory and sit high upon the hillside - the giants of La Mancha.
Toledo itself is an ancient city set on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. It is known for the medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian monuments in its walled old city. Toledo was the home of the Mannerist painter El Greco and the lively Plaza de Zocodover was where

we met our tour guide for a somewhat intense walking tour of the area. Melanie (our guide) was extremely knowledgeable, although many of us agreed that we could not retain most of the information she so effortlessly imparted! Some of us did, however, remember that the University Café which she had pointed out to us, provided a very good 3 course Menu del Dia for 8 euros and with the help of Google maps were able to retrace our steps and enjoy a well-earned refreshment break. Our second day in the area, allowed us a visit to the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and the country residence of Spanish Monarchs. The Palace built by Phillip II in 1564 (although not completed until 1752) is full of beauty and history – we saw the Queen’s Boudoir, the Ballroom, the State Dining Room and other exotic and surprising spaces. The gardens sprawled beautifully across 274 acres and the Barge Museum offered an amazing insight into the lives of those who had gone before.
Our step counters told us that we had completed the required amount for the day and so on return to the hotel we refused to go any further and remained there until morning!
Our final stop off en route home was a visit to the city of Ciudad Real, where, in the Plaza Mayor, we witnessed the fascinating animated clock featuring figures of Don Quixote, Sancho Panza and Cervantes. A brief spell of retail therapy concluded a fabulous trip.
Our coach driver delivered us safely back to Gran Alacant in a timely manner, where we said goodbye to the new friends we had met, thanked Alison and Neil for their great efforts and made our way home for a welldeserved foot spa!
Keep a look out for future trips organised by this dynamic duo - advertised on Facebook and at coffee mornings around Gran Alacant.

SECRETS OF A HAPPY MARRIAGE
AN INTERVEW WITH GEOFF & MARIE
This month we meet Geoff and Marie Young who have been married for 50 years. They came to live in Gran Alacant 23 years ago. Geoff is from Salford and Marie is from Sunderland in the United Kingdom.
What is the BEST thing about your relationship?
Geoff: We are diametrically opposed. We have nothing in common and cannot agree on anything. However, being two sides of the one coin, or yin and yang, we make up the complete whole.
Tell us about your first date
Geoff: I can’t remember it but I do remember our first meeting. I was working in a bar in Cumbria and Marie started work in the dining room. My first words were, “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?” She didn’t like me at first, but that was probably down to my long shaggy hair, green loons, cheesecloth shirt and Jesus sandals.
What was your wedding day like?
Geoff: It was a cold winter’s day in March at St Hilda’s church in Southwick, Sutherland. Our honeymoon was a weekend break in London courtesy of the Newcastle Evening Chronical. We were going to the Post Office Tower Revolving restaurant but Marie contracted bronchitis just before the wedding so we never got there.
What do you LOVE most about each other Everything.
Have you had tough times and if so how did you get through them
Geoff: Yes of course we have had tough times, but we stuck by and supported each other through them.
What is your TOP TIP for a happy marriage
Geoff: We make each other laugh and frequent use of the phrase “YES DEAR”.
Would you like to share your secrets of a happy marriage?

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS – ADIÓS GRAN ALACANT, HOLA BIAR!
This month’s article is a little different. No day trips to castles, sleepy coastal villages, or mountain hikes. This one’s more personal, more emotional - and very exciting. After five amazing years in Gran Alacant, we’re packing up and moving… but don’t worry, we’re not going far!
We’ve found our new home in the small inland village of Biar, tucked into the foothills near the Sierra de Mariola, about 45 minutes from Alicante and just 10 minutes from Villena, where Juan’s family lives. It’s a place we’ve returned to time and time again over the years, each visit leaving us just a little more enchanted. Eventually, the pull became too strong to ignore - and now, it’s happening. We’re moving.
Why Biar? It’s hard to describe in words what makes this place so special, but we’ll try.
Biar feels like the real Spain - authentic, peaceful, and beautifully preserved. The village is steeped in history, with cobbled streets, traditional stone houses, and one of the prettiest town squares we’ve ever seen. There’s a Moorish castle sitting proudly above the village, pine- covered mountains all around, and a wonderful sense of calm. Life moves a little slower here, and that suits us perfectly right now.
Over the last year, we’ve found ourselves reflecting more and more on the kind of lifestyle we truly want. The dream of a more sustainable, grounded life kept creeping into our conversations. We started imagining a garden, space to grow things, a connection to the land - and now we’ve found it! We’ve bought a small plot just outside the village, and while it’s currently wild and overgrown, we see magic in it already.
Our dream is to fill it with native plants and fruit trees, maybe a few hens - and, no doubt, more tomatoes than we’ll know what to do with! It’s about slowing down, living more simply, and being closer to family.
We’re also pleasantly surprised by how connected Biar is. For a village of just 3,000 people, the transport links are amazing. There’s the high-speed AVE train station in Villena, which means we can be in Madrid in two hours or Valencia in just over one. The A-31 motorway is just down the road, giving us easy access to Alicante or inland
adventures. And Valencia - one of our absolute favourite cities - is just an hour away. It feels like we’re getting the best of both worlds: village charm and big-city access.
Of course, this doesn’t mean we’re saying goodbye to Gran Alacant completely. Not at all. We’re keeping our beloved GA house - it’s far too special to let go. This place welcomed us from day one, when we landed here from London, and it gave us everything we hoped for and more. We found a home, a community, and friendships that will stay with us forever.
We’ll still be back regularly, and yes - we’ll definitely continue writing Home Turf! There’s still so much of the Costa Blanca to explore, and we feel very much part of the Gran Alacant community. We’re also beyond grateful to keep collaborating with Lou, who has always supported our little stories and adventures with such enthusiasm.
So there you have it - our big news! From Gran Alacant to Biar, we’re embracing a new adventure while carrying with us the wonderful memories, friendships, and connections we’ve made here by the coast.
If you’ve never explored Biar, consider it for a weekend getaway or even a quick stop on the way to Villena or Valenciayou won’t regret it. There’s great food, incredible hiking trails in the surrounding Sierra, and of course, that picture-perfect castle waiting to be climbed. It’s a village that welcomes you with open arms.
And don’t worry - we’ll be back in GA soon enough, soaking up the sea breeze and catching up with friends.

IS FEEDING STREET CATS LEGAL?
The answer, like most things in life is: it depends.
• If you feed them at home, that is, in your garden or indoors, it’s legal.
• If you feed them outside, that is, at the street, without an authorization from the Town Hall, it’s illegal.
• If you feed them at the street and you have an authorization from the Town Hall, it’s legal.
In most cases, feeding animals at the street, such as cats, birds, pigeons, foxes, wild boars, is forbidden due to public health and animal population control reasons.
• -Public health reasons are that leaving food at the street is a focus of attraction for rodents and other conflictive species such as seagulls.
• -Animal population control reasons are that food available 24/7 will produce wild cats, rodents and cockroaches population will get increased out of control, and, besides, it’s a proven fact that street cats don’t help controlling rats population, but they are a real threat for lots of species of insectivorous birds and reptiles, which are extremely important for controlling mosquitoes and other pests.
May I feed cats at home?
Yes, but only if you do it in your private property. You are not allowed to do it at your urbanization community gardens or next to the swimming pool, even if we are talking of a private urbanization with restricted access. Despite being legal, feeding cats inside the limits of your private property is not very recommendable, since, sooner or later, it will be a source of troubles with your neighbours, because for most of them, the view of lots of street cats surrounding the area won’t make them very happy. We must
insist that your garden or patio is not your neighbour’s one.
What can I do if I want to feed street cats?
The only valid option is applying for a special permission at your Town Hall (of course, they can accept or deny it). In every town there are some officially controlled feline colonies. This implies one or more volunteers accept the responsibility of watching the cats (which implies knowing the exact number of individuals of the colony, detecting the ill ones, etc), and have specific feeding points assigned. These volunteers who have the Town Hall authorization are allowed to put food in public areas, but they are obliged to remove and dispose the remains afterwards, before rodents and cockroaches come. Another responsibility of the volunteers is catching the cats for having them neutered, and releasing them after the operation.
With all these regulations, what we get is controlled colonies, with people looking after them. What we want is making the number of street cats gradually decrease, in a way which is respectful with animal welfare.
If anybody is interested, the only right way is via the Town Hall. If you think anybody if feeding street cats illegally, you can report the Town Hall or the Local Police, and in case of urbanizations, you should also report the property manager. Remember feeding cats without authorization means breaking the law.
For our own good and for the environment, let’s respect the rules.

GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS
There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.
We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.
Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.
As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.
If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp: 00353 / 87 991 6020

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL
THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!
The Women’s Walking Football sessions in Gran Alacant continue to gain in popularity. The improving weather encourages people to come and give this activity a try and most newcomers return again and again. Research has evidenced that participating in Walking Football (or similar exercise in later life) increases mobility, improves balance, aids socialisation and contributes to good mental health. In our case it also provides much needed laughter!
We continue to hold our sessions every Thursday (not July and August) at 11.00 hours on the Astroturf pitch at the leisure centre. The squad would like to publicly thank their coaches Jim Fraser and John Broderick for their help, encouragement and support (and patience) and also their sponsors GA Homefinders for their continued belief in us!
If you’d like to give this fun activity a try, simply turn up at the pitch side on Thursday morning or message Julie on WhatsApp +447926187469. Further information can be found on our Facebook page Gran Alacant’s Walking Football Community.
We are particularly keen to hear from those who reside in Gran Alacant for most of the year as that ensures numbers are consistent
even in the winter months. However, please don’t be put off if you’re simply visiting for a short holiday – you will be just as welcome.
GA MENS WALKING FOOTBALL
Summer is fast approaching and the weather is starting to heat up. With that in mind, we usually take a break over July and August to avoid the worst of the heat. So June is the last few weeks to get your fitness up!
It was great to see so many people attend our latest social event in the sun at Molly Malone´s. The next one will be the first Tuesday in August with the venue to be confirmed. For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for more information.
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! If you wish to take part, Gran Alacant Walking Football club meets each Wednesday at 11am on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). The cost is only 1 euro per session. Please arrive around 10.50am to allow for teams to be arranged. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).
Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.
For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events. If you get hold of the May copy quickly then the next social event will be on the first Tuesday in May with the venue to be confirmed. The next one will be in August.
