ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS
Oscar Valenzuela Councillor of Gran Alacant & Education
Q: Speed bumps on Calle Belgica
Good morning Lou, Ria again. You have, I think, a whole file about my requests for speeding bumps in the Calle Belgica. I try one last time to bring the situation under the attention of the Town Hall. Can you print it in the next edition please?
I am waiting for these street bumps now for 5 years. At first I contacted the Committee of owners and than I tried the Advertiser since 2022, 7 times now, to get it done. Oscar visited me in March 2023 and he told me he was waiting for a budget. I have never heard anything since and of course, no bumps.
Five cats , 2 were mine, and a dog have been killed on this racing circuit, being the part of the Calle Belgica after the park, where idiots hit the gas to the max and drive like crazy. Obviously they don't care about te animals they kill. It does not interest neither them, nor theTown Hall: they are only animals, is it not?
BUT I loved my 2 killed cats and it is your fault that they are dead. It is your responsibility to
Borja Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare
let us live in a safe environment and not on a Formula I racing circuit. Putting speeding bumps is the only way to stop these crazy drivers. And talking about a budget : which budget and when? Over 10 years? It is already 5 years now. It is just another way to say We dont do it.
It is so sad to notice that so many persons do not give a damn about animals, while these cats and dogs give us unconditional love and bring so much comfort and joy to the lifes of many people.
I HAVE A QUESTION to my neighbours in this area: if you know where I can buy these bumps, please let me know, through the Advertiser, or in postbox 99. With the help of some friends, also animal lovers, I will do it myself. It is very clear that help from the Town Hall you can forget.
Ria
Q: Speedbumps at Novamar
Hi again, Lou! I am sorry to inform you that still nothing has happened regarding our very dangerous exit from Novamar III into Avenida Noruega. I don't know how many
times we nearly have been torpedoed by crazy drivers there, with almost no visibility and a flat road. I know Oscar said that a new budget was needed to build a speed bump, but that was a long time ago. Santa Pola has been warned time and again about this dangerous spot through many years now. I certainly do not like to say this, but if anything serious happens there, the City must be prepared to be sued, because there is no good reason why nothing has been done, while only a cheap and simple measure is required. Even a boltet on bump will be sufficient. Best regards, and many thanks for your support. Rune
GA Advertiser reply:
Thank you for your emails. We have asked our councillors if there are any plans for more speed bumps in GA and in which locations. As soon as we have an answer, we will let you know.
Q: Tourist Train,
Hello Lou, do you have any news about tourist train? Kind Regards, Mark
Borja Merino reply:
I am sorry to tell you, but the company that was managing the tourist train, due to personal health problems, cannot continue providing the service. From the city council we are doing all the administrative procedures urgently and quickly so that another company can provide that service as soon as possible.
Q: Speeding buses on Calle Canarias
Hi Lou, we live on Calle Canarias and have written to the magazine previously about the bus service now on Calle Canarias. The speed of the bus Santa Pola/Alicante has not changed while other buses use this route ie. Urban bus, Elche bus and lots of school buses but at the right speed are not a problem. Residents have made official complaints to the townhall and at the police station but no action seems to have been taken. Can you please ask our local councillors if anything has been discussed at the townhall about these complaints which were lodged? Please before somebody is seriously injured. Regards, Chris
GA Advertiser reply:
Hi Chris, it looks like you’ve taken all the appropriate steps by filing an official complaint at the town hall and reporting the issue to the local police. We will ask our councillors to look into it and check if something else could be done.
Q: New litter bins
A new litter bin has been attached to a lamp post creating a dangerous hazard for wheelchair users. It is near the car park next to the Chinese restaurant.
If the bin could be rotated to be closer to the wall this would be a lot safer. Attached pic is of a friend trying to get by. Regards, Mike
GA Advertiser reply:
We’ve noticed the new litter bins and think they look great. However, this particular bin appears to be incorrectly positioned, and we’ve contacted the Councillor for Cleaning to request that it be repositioned.
Q: How could we make Gran Alacant safer during tourist season?
Because I don't know if it happens to you, but I have a harder time crossing pedestrian crossings, catching cars that don't stop, looking at their phones, going uphill, and accelerating for fear of stalling their rental car. We could try again by installing pedestrian traffic lights that last 20 seconds each time they are pressed, or if not, they should be yellow as a warning light. And another thing: on Avenida Mediterráneo, in the area leading downhill to Carabassi Beach or Arenales, the speeds reached by cars and public buses far exceed the speed limits. Add to this the fact that cars are trying to turn onto Avenida Asia, Oceanía, Calle Cataluña, and other avenues while ascending the Avenida Mediterráneo, and there is a risk of collision, especially with the change in gradient. In short, if we install recumbent guards or other options to reduce speed on the descents. Best regards, David
GA Advertiser reply: Thank you for your email, we have sent it to our councillors for their consideration.

COMMUNITY TIPS
Dear Lou, please find further details following on from our conversation today:
1. Dog Poop. Could ALL pet owners be made aware that by LAW they must not only pick their pet's poop but also carry a water bottle to wash away their pee. If caught I do believe there is a hefty fine to pay.
2. Could people disposing of their plastic bottles in the plastic bottle banks, please stand on them/squash them before disposing of them. This would mean a lot more bottles would go in the bins instead of all around the bins.
3. Cardboard boxes for the same reasons as No.2.
All of these things only take seconds to do, but make our community a much cleaner place.
Kind Regards, John R.
RUBBISH SITUATION
The problem isn’t with bins being emptied. It’s with dirty b******* living in GA. This bin is empty but people just throw their rubbish to the side...

The Rainbow Bridge
By Edna Clyne-Rekhy
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, your pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and strength, those who were hurt are made better and strong again, like we remember them before they go to heaven. They are happy and content except for one small thing, they each miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance, his bright eyes are shining, his body shakes.
Suddenly he begins to run from the herd, rushing over the grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cuddle in a happy hug never to be apart again.
You and your pet are in tears. Your hands again cuddle his head and you look again into his trusting eyes, so long gone from life, but never absent from your heart, and then... you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

The List of Suspicious Things
by Jennie Godfrey
Yorkshire 1979. Maggie Thatcher is Prime Minister, drainpipe jeans are in, and Miv is convinced her dad wants to move their family down south. Because of the murders.
Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon simply isn’t an option, no matter the dangers or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv’s mum stopped talking. Perhaps if she could solve the case of the disappearing women, they could stay after all?
So Miv and Sharon decide to make a list - a list of all the suspicious people and things down their street. But their search for the truth reveals more secrets in their neighbourhood than they ever thought possible. Secrets within their families and even between each other.
I loved the characters in this book. The author tells us about friendship, community family and secrets. One of my favourite characters was Omar who owned the corner shop. Who despite personal tragedy and prejudice understood about community and kindness and sympathy to one another.
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

AQUA FITNESS CLASSES
WHAT ARE AQUA CLASSES?
Aqua classes are exceptionally popular, with thousands taking part every week. There are, however, some common misconceptions that people associate with the classes. These can be anything from believing that it is an easy option and only for unfit participants, all the way to considering it only suitable for older people.
In truth, Aqua classes have more health and fitness benefits than most other group exercise classes and they are actually among the most effective for burning calories. You can burn 400-500 calories during a typical session depending on how hard you are working. It helps you lose weight, strengthens and tones muscles and improves your fitness levels without putting a lot of strain through your joints making this class particularly appealing for people with mobility issues.
GETTING STARTED
Getting started with Aqua is simple. All you need to bring along is suitable swimwear, a noodle and a bottle of water. It is important you stay hydrated throughout the session particularly in the HOT Summer months.
PICKING THE BEST SPOT IN THE POOL
Aqua BootCamp: This will depend on your height. The best place to stand is where the water comes up to your mid chest. Standing here allows you to get maximum benefit from the exercises. You do not need to be able to swim to attend an Aqua class, however, if you are less confident in the water it is advisable that you stand close to the edge of the pool and in slightly shallower water.
Deep Water Aqua: You can go anywhere in the deep end! You will be suspended in the water with the aid of a flotation belt. Your feet will NOT touch the ground. Using your core to keep you on one spot, this will make for a more intense workout. You will burn more calories and feel more benefits. Please note you will need to be a confident swimmer to take part!
HOW HARD DO YOU WORK?
One of the great benefits of Aqua classes is that you can choose your own level, without any pressure to push yourself too hard. This means that if you are new to exercise, or just getting back into it after a long time, then you can gradually work harder each session.
Each time you attend, you will be building up your stamina and, importantly, your confidence. One of the key benefits of Aqua classes is that they are accessible to everyone, irrespective of fitness levels.
LOW IMPACT FOR JOINTS
Being in the water means that all your joints are supported. This means you are less likely to have to endure any joint pain compared to land based activities. Resistance exercise is particularly important for improving bone density and helping to prevent osteoporosis.
INCREASED FLEXIBILITY
As well as helping you burn calories, lose weight, tone muscles and improve stamina, Aqua classes can also help you become more flexible and improve your range of movement. This is, once again, thanks to the resistance offered by the water,
helping strengthen your joints and the muscles around them without putting any unnecessary stress through them.
DECREASED HEART RATE
In the water, due to the increase in pressure, your heart rate is around 10-15% less than it is out of it. As a result, you can do more exercise thanks to this lower heart rate.
FUN AND SOCIABLE
As well as offering a fantastic workout, Aqua classes are a great way to meet new people.
Whilst the exercises themselves are fun, the music is specifically chosen to motivate you to work harder and the instructors ensure everyone in class is having a great time.

YOU READY TO EXPERIENCE THE BENEFITS OF DEEP WATER AQUA?

AN INTERVEW WITH TONY & LESLEY
This month we meet local Gran Alacant residents Anthony (Tony) Whittaker, 78, and Kathryn Lesley Whittaker, 75, who have been married for over 50 years!
Where are you from?
Tony is from Macclesfield in Cheshire and Lesley is from Kendal in Cumbria.
How long have you been living in GA?
Tony: “We have had a house in Gran Alacant now for 23 years and moved here permanently with the aid of a non-lucrative visa after Brexit. Before that, we had a timeshare in Benalmadena for many years. That is what gave us the taste for Spanish life."
How many years have you been married?
“We have been married for 52 years. We had been together for 18 months prior to that.”
What is the best thing about your relationship?
Tony: “One of us is an extrovert and one is an introvert, I’ll let you all decide who is who. We are very supportive of one another (in secret shush). Especially in personal crises.”
Tell us about your first date

With Laurie Cavagna MEET YOUR GRAN ALACANT NEIGHBOURS
Laurie settled in Gran Alacant a year ago and is one of newer advertisers in the Gran Alacant Advertiser. She is a massage therapist who offers a wide variety of treatments.
LAURIE: "Having settled for a year in Gran Alacant, a charming sun-drenched town on the Spanish coast, I savour every day the sweetness of this new chapter in my life. After years spent in France in the corporate world, where the relentless race for more took precedence over what truly matters, I felt a deep need to give my life a more authentic meaning.
A devotee of yoga and physical and spiritual well-being, I decided to change careers seven years ago. I then earned a diploma in Sophrology, a gentle method that helps release negative tensions such as stress by promoting smooth breathing. It improves, among other things, the quality of sleep and allows one to approach life in a more positive way.
To deepen my treatments and better support my clients, I trained in various massage techniques. Body massage first (our home), with therapeutic treatments
related to physical issues such as lymphatic drainage, or simply relaxing massages for a pure moment of relaxation.
My method is not limited to a simple massage. It adopts a holistic approach, taking into account the physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of each individual. By working on the body, I help release muscular tension and promote emotional balance and the connection between body and mind.
I also practice “Kobido,” a specific facial massage. It is anti-wrinkle, a true natural manual facelift. It restores radiance to the face with a real anti-aging effect and overall well-being.
To complement my skills and better support my clients, I use high-quality essential oils. They are true allies for natural health. Essential oils enhance the effectiveness of massages and bring daily well-being.
All these fields fascinate me. I love bringing relief, peace, and harmony to those in need. The benefits are immediate, the relaxation palpable, and the positive feedback from my clients is a constant source of satisfaction. Being able to contribute to the well-being of others is a profound reason that fully justifies this life choice.
I offer my massages in a warm space that I have carefully arranged where every detail is designed to create a soothing and welcoming atmosphere. I also make house calls, thus offering everyone the possibility to benefit from personalized treatments in the comfort of their own environment. This flexibility is essential to meet the varied needs of my clientele.
However, becoming an entrepreneur in a foreign country is not without challenges. The language barrier, administrative and cultural differences, as well as the need to establish a new clientele require a lot of personal investment and perseverance.
Interview By Lynne Lowe
Every day brings its share of obstacles but also satisfactions. This journey is a rewarding adventure that pushes me to grow and adapt.
Choosing Gran Alacant as my new home was a carefully considered decision. The living environment, quality of life, friendliness of the locals—all contribute to making this place a true haven of peace. The ever-present sun plays a significant role in my personal and professional balance. It brightens my days and fuels my positive energy.
In short, this past year here has confirmed that I made the right choice. The transition to therapeutic care and well-being is a meaningful human adventure. It allows me to combine my personal aspirations with a professional commitment that carries values. Helping others feel better, regain serenity and balance, is a mission that fills me with joy.
Gran Alacant has become my home, a place where I can fully express my passion and my desire to do good around me. This path is one of self-fulfilment and shared happiness."

PARQUE LA MARJAL: BORN FROM A PROBLEM, BUILT FOR A SOLUTION
On our latest outing with the Mediterranean Garden Society (Costa Blanca branch), we swapped our sunhats for thinking caps and took a guided tour of Parque La Marjal, nestled in San Juan playa, Alicante. But don’t be fooled by the calm walkways and families feeding ducks - this is not just a park. It’s a €3.5 million feat of urban engineering designed to do something extraordinary: save the city from floods and give the locals somewhere pleasant to stroll.
Completed in 2015, La Marjal was created to address a very specific problem: the destructive flash flooding that occasionally turns Alicante’s streets into rivers. You’ve probably seen it or lived it. A heavy rainfall that lasts a few hours and voilà! Underpasses become swimming pools and ground floors become aquariums.
But unlike Santa Pola or Gran Alacant, where even a “light drizzle” seems to prompt panic and blocked drains, San Juan decided to do something about it. The answer wasn’t just more pipes or bigger drains. It was La Marjal: a smart, multifunctional floodable park.
The project was financed and led by Aguas de Alicante (the local water company), in partnership with the city council. Rather than treating stormwater as a problem to flush away, the team asked: What if we worked with nature instead of against it?
The genius of La Marjal lies beneath its flower beds. At its core, the park is a 45,000m² basin that can collect up to 45 million litres of stormwater, equivalent to 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools. When it rains, water is diverted into the park’s artificial wetlands and ponds. This helps to prevent the overflowing of sewage systems and the flooding of nearby streets.
But don’t imagine a concrete reservoir. The park is landscaped beautifully with native and adapted plant species that not only tolerate waterlogging but thrive in it. There are birdwatching points, walking trails, and educational panels explaining the flora, fauna and hydraulic logic of the space.
The park also serves as a biodiversity hotspot, inviting birds, frogs, and even the occasional turtle to enjoy the watery haven. It’s a rare example
of grey infrastructure made green - and a case study in sustainable urban design.
Now, let’s look a little closer to home. Anyone who lives near El Clot de Galvany or the lower parts of Gran Alacant knows the drill. A few hours of rain and bam! you’re either trapped in your home or wading across roundabouts with supermarket bags held above your head like offerings to the water gods.
Why? Because, unlike San Juan, our local authorities seem to have skipped the part where you plan for water. And yet, Santa Pola is no stranger to the risks. The town lies in a low-lying area with seasonal torrential rainfall. Local residents have been complaining for years about water damage, inaccessible roads, and poor drainage.
Let’s be honest: the council allowed development in flood-prone areas without investing in the kind of forward-thinking
infrastructure that La Marjal represents. And each year, the consequences get wetter.
La Marjal shows us that it is possible to live with water, gracefully, safely, and even beautifully. It shows that investing in flood resilience doesn´t have to mean dull engineering projects that never see the light of day. It can mean parks. It can mean better air. It can mean more biodiversity and even a quiet picnic spot for a Sunday afternoon.
It also proves that public-private partnerships can work, especially when there is political will, community engagement, and smart planning behind the scenes.
So, dear Santa Pola Council: the blueprint exists. We’ve seen it. We’ve walked it. And we took notes. We’re not asking for miracles, we’re asking for more “Marjales”.

SOCIAL NETWORKING AND RABIES: TWO DANGEROUS THINGS
This time we want to write about two different matters. One of them affects mainly animals, and the other one affects both animals and people.
The first one is about using animal suffering in social networking. We all have watched funny cats videos at Youtube (and we all have laughed a lot, of course). We mean cats that play, chase each other, drink from the tap, hide in boxes for stalking other cats, etc. All this things are hilarious and harmless. So far, so good. But the problem comes when Youtube algorithm drives us to other pets videos, where you can see “poor” animals which have been “rescued” in “very poor condition”. Very often they are “found” in the middle of the street extremely skinny, scruffy and scared. In this cases the implied animal is normally a dog. The video usually continues showing the first bath, the first meal, etc. Surprisingly, these “scared and abandoned” animals react in a strange submissive and peaceful way when having a shampoo and facing the hair dryer. They should panic with the noise and the air jet, shouldn’t they?? Anyone who knows how these things work, knows perfectly that abandoned and mistreated animals are normally afraid of everything and won’t react so well when groomed in 99% of cases.
Every time we watch one of those “poor fleabag dog rescued” or “poor ill mommy cat and kittens rescued” videos, we may be supporting, without even realizing, some really disgusting people creating these sad situations on purpose, just for the likes. Why do we think so? Because they are very well structured videos, with close-ups, wide shots, same as a real movie. If one of us finds an animal like that, normally we do what we have to do instead of feeling like Steven Spielberg just for one day. Even if we take a video with our mobile, it will be a blurred amateur footage, similar to when we film our dog when it suddenly starts doing something funny, but never a 7 th art masterpiece. And yes, we firmly believe there are people nasty enough to create those farces just for obtaining some likes at Instagram or Tik Tok, not caring at all of animal suffering. Yes, we believe we are talking of mistreated on purpose animals, just for showing at the Internet the “miraculous”
recovering. Let’s don’t forget if we open the video, even for disliking it, that means one more view, which is exactly what they want.
Of course, we don’t include in this category those videos where you see Police, Firemen or Seprona rescuing an animal in troubles, for example in case of natural disaster. There is a big difference which there is no need to be explained to the adults we all are supposed to be.
This month second matter is about rabies. One Spaniard died some weeks ago in Valencia because he caught rabies from an infected dog during his holidays in Ethiopia, and a few days later a Brit died at the UK after being bitten by a dog in Morocco. We will never stop repeating rabies is lethal. If first symptoms appear (sometimes even one year after the bite, as happened to the Spaniard) and no after exposure therapy (which consists of 4 dosages of vaccine plus several antibodies injections) has been started, the outcome is always the same: death. The only exception so far is an American girl from Bible Belt (and all that it implies) whose fanatic anti-vaccine parents refused post exposure therapy for her after being bitten by a bat at the church. After several months in coma, the girl woke up, but she remained quadriplegic. Is that what you call life?
For these reasons, we keep reminding everybody to keep rabies injections updated, and to be very careful when going on holidays to a country which is not free of rabies (much more ones that you may initially think). And, despite it’s completely legal to renew rabies injection every 2 or 3 years, manufacturers cannot guarantee a good immunity further than one year, so you’d better don’t be like those Bible Belt rednecks, and keep immunity high enough by renewing rabies injection every year. You cannot harm your animal in any way, and for the price of the injection you get, in addition, a check and a free worming tablet. We can’t imagine a better investment. Spain is a peninsula, not an island like Britain, and there is rabies at Morocco and France. The only reason why we keep being a rabies free country is vaccination, vaccination and vaccination.

I often read on forums that a Will can be organised directly through a notary effectively cutting out the “middle man’’ saving 40€ or so on average against our own fees and this is 100% true as if you are simply looking to save money upfront, going directly to a notary will always be cheaper than using ourselves to produce your legal documents and then paying a notary for their services afterwards.
WHEN YOU DIE IN SPAIN IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN IT’S ALSO ABOUT WHAT WON’T
beneficiaries have as little hassle and expense and cost as possible once you have died.
Clients of Thy Will Be Done are ASSURED of the following:
1. Their beneficiaries will not need to travel to Spain to arrange an NIE number – our UK office can easily organise this directly with them and the Spanish Consulate;
2. Their beneficiaries will not have to seek out an English-speaking Abogado (solicitor) in Spain and pay for that Abogado to have Power of Attorney to act for them – if we are nominated as executors within a Spanish Will, we will immediately liaise directly with the UK beneficiaries in English and the Spanish authorities in Spanish;
+ iva if the client has Priority Client Cover in place (just 4.99€ per month with no minimum contract);
4. Their beneficiaries will not have to deal with 2 legal entities, one for the Spanish estate and one for the UK estate as we take care of probate in both jurisdictions seamlessly at the same time.
So, when considering if it’s worth cutting out the middleman you should perhaps consider just one question?
What would your beneficiaries think?
However, let’s take a minute to remember WHY we are organising a Will for your Spanish estate in the first place –it is to guarantee that your wishes are adhered to AND to ENSURE that your
3. Their beneficiaries will not have to pay an unknown amount for Spanish probate to be conducted as our probate fees are guaranteed in advance at just 1.75% + iva of the estate value as standard or even lower at only 1.16%
Call us Monday to Friday 9-4 (except red days) on 865 756 058 and a convenient time can be arranged for us to talk through your options either over the phone or (for those clients that are close to our Spanish office in Benijofar) a face to face meeting can be arranged and, our advice is always FREE - you only pay if you engage us to produce your legal documents.

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP
A group of international football fans in Gran Alacant are celebrating the return of Elche to La Liga, and games against the giants of Spanish football such as Barcelona and Real Madrid. The local club secured promotion from Segunda on the last day of the season, with Reckless Bar packed out for the away game in A Coruña.
With the new season starting in August, home matches see the local supporters group meeting at Reckless Bar and carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards. Away games are screened at Reckless Bar for the group to watch together.
Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand, and fixtures for the new season are expected to be announced in July.
The group currently consists of 15 season ticket holders and a growing number of regular match attendees, all affiliated to the Peña Internacional de Elche CF. For the new season we expect the number of season ticket holders to increase significantly, with the football club aiming to grow their supporter base on their return to the top flight.
Tickets for matches can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.
Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’ ¡Mucho Elche!
GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS
There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.
We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.
Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.
As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.
If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp: 00353 / 87 991 6020

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL
THE HEAT IS ON!!
It is almost time for the Women’s Squad to hang up their boots for the summer break. Many of our regular players go back to their country of origin to see family for the summer, some have visitors here and for others... it’s just too darn hot!!!
However, although we don’t physically play together in July and August, you can be sure Grandchildren, wherever they are, are benefitting from our words of wisdom, newly developed passing skills, ball control and all-round enthusiasm for the beautiful game!!
Plans for the World Walking Football Tournament in Torrevieja in October are now well under way. Over 70 teams have now been confirmed as competing. Team Spain has a training camp in June and September, and final squad announcements are expected at the end of June. It’s safe to say that none of our squad are expecting to be called up but who knows – maybe next time!!
The tournament has attracted many bigname sponsors including CAXIA Bank and Avalon. We, meanwhile, remain grateful for our own local sponsors GA-Homefinders, who continue to support us and provide us with our fabulous team shirts.
Have a great summer everyone. Hope to see some new and (not so) old faces in September.
GA MENS WALKING FOOTBALL
Summer is definitely here and it is hot, hot, hot. As such GAWF will take a break over July and August to avoid the worst of the heat. We will get back together in September and an update on the time of the sessions will appear should they change.
Thank you to everyone who has come along to our sessions. Your support is greatly appreciated. Although the sessions are over, we still have the social event to look forward to. It will be on the first Tuesday in August with the venue to be confirmed. For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for more information.
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! If you wish to take part, Gran Alacant Walking Football club meets each Wednesday at 11am on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). The cost is only 1 euro per session. Please arrive around 10.50am to allow for teams to be arranged. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch.
Walking football is well-established in the area and there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. Some of these will continue over the summer but earlier in the morning to avoid the worst of the heat.
