ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS
Oscar Valenzuela Councillor of Gran Alacant & Education
Q: Water fountains:
Hi Lou, I have a question and a suggestion regarding: Water fountains in Gran Alacant. What is the reason there is no drinking fountain in the playgrounds, sports center, and almost everywhere in Gran Alacant?
Thank you for your attention. Regards, David
Borja Merino’s Reply: That is a great idea. We will study it and speak with Hidraqua.
Q: Lolly pop ladies
Hi Lou, the new School (No. 8) opposite the Pharmacy is due to open at the end of Oct/ early Nov, and at that time the School Buses
Borja
Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare
will be stopped and many Children will start to walk to School. This is great apart from when they need to cross the roads that are very busy and pretty dangerous especially in the mornings.
In the UK we have 'Lolly Pop' ladies who stop the traffic at the Zebra Crossings and help the School kids safely cross the roads before & after school (see photo). Could you ask the GA Councillors to consider setting up this service ? I imagine there are quite a few Bus Monitors who will be looking for work once the Transport ends, and they would could be ideal for this work - knowing the kids so well as they do. Thank you so much, Chris
Do you need help with Spanish translations around Gran
Borja Merino’s Reply:
Thank you very much for the contribution, normally it is the Local Police that is already controlling security at the times of entry and exit to the school.
Q: Various suggestions
Hi Lou, how's the start of summer going? I'd like to share another point with you in case you think it's worth speaking with Borja or Óscar. Thanks.
Regarding the shade in the playgrounds.
1. Thank you very much for the awnings at the health center playground. How would you see the option, in the rest of the playgrounds—the one next to the post office, the one at Kaliestenia, and the one next to Aldi—of installing sliding awnings, so that they can be put up in the summer and taken down in the winter? With the awnings, you want the sun in the winter, but not in the summer. So, with the tent, where the awning can be moved, this option could be achieved. To do this, it would only be moved twice a year by workers, and then it would be locked with padlocks or other means. Example: sliding awning up from March 1st to October 15th and awning open from October 16th to February 28th/29th.
2. On the other hand, given that the central government has expanded Law 17/2011, of July 5, on food safety and nutrition, in schools and hospitals to protect public health, could we please try to remove unhealthy food from the sports center vending machine?
3. Last but not least, we could try to take a step forward in health matters from Gran Alacant and establish no-smoking areas, such as in parks, health centers, and surrounding areas with signs. It's very sad that some people stand next to the playground to smoke, if only a few meters away, not inside, but the smoke is released into the air and reaches the little ones or enters the health center. A smoke-free zone, as is already being done on some beaches.
Thank you as always, and sorry for the many comments. Have a nice day.
David
GA Advertiser reply:
Thank you David as always for your great suggestions, we have passed them on to our councillors.
Q: Garden recycling centre
Morning lou, we've been many times when the garden refuge should be open and it's closed. It's clear by the note on the gate it should be open, but it's clearly not. Can you ask please what's happening with it? It's very frustrating when you take your garden rubbish up there instead of dumping it anywhere like some people do, and it's closed for no reason. Thanks appreciate your help.
Claire
GA Advertiser reply:
Hi Claire, we have shared this concern with the councillor and we remain hopeful for a prompt resolution.
Q: Street cleaning
Hi Lou hope you are well & coping with the heat .Can you please ask the counsellors re cleaning.
I remember last year the counsellors saying or even promising the communities of Gran Alacant, that the new contractors responsible for keeping our streets clean etc , would treat ALL streets the same & keep them clean etc. I was very pleased after many years to see the short stretch of Calle Malta, off Avenida Carabasi ,was at last been cleaned. The guy driving the road sweeper was making a very good job cleaning the circle at the bottom of the street going round several times. Now this has stopped no cleaning whatsoever. Everyone also comments how high the weeds are growing in the causer edges around most areas off Avenida Noruega.
The litter bins have been replaced on Av . Carabasi, can they replace the one on Calle Chipre on the pool wall by street 26. It's had a hole in the bottom for years. Also replace the bins that disappeared from the rest of the streets, originally there were 6 now 2. We want to be proud of all area of G/A, but alas the representatives let us down. Bill
GA Advertiser reply:
Hi Bill, thank you for sharing your observations with us - we've passed your message along to the local councillors for their attention and follow-up.

SANTA POLA STEPS UP EFFORTS TO MANAGE ILLEGAL DUMPING
The Departments of Sanitation and Public Safety, in coordination with the cleaning service contractor, Urbaser, and the Local Police, are addressing the ongoing issue of bulky items and garden waste being illegally dumped on public streets. This is one of the most pressing challenges for the cleaning service, as it can overwhelm their workload despite the availability of a free home collection service. Local Police have already issued around 50 fines and will increase monitoring this summer through patrols and drone surveillance.
Reminder for households - Santa Pola Council and Urbaser offer a FREE home collection service for household items and garden waste: Tel: 966 693 955 or WhatsApp: 639 537 476

FLOOD PREVENTION WORKS PLANNED FOR COSTA HISPANIA GRAN ALACANT
The City Council has asked water provider Hidraqua to prepare a project aimed at reducing the risk of flooding in Costa Hispania, following issues caused by Storm Konrad in March. The project will be included in this year’s municipal budget.
Mayor Loreto Serrano and local councilors met with the homeowners’ association of Costa Hispania, Hidraqua, and technical staff to discuss the situation and explore possible solutions. Responsibilities for the improvements will be shared between the City Council and the association.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS NEAR SANTA POLA LIGHTHOUSE
Santa Pola Council has completed resurfacing works on a 3km stretch of the lighthouse road, investing €40,000 to improve safety and comfort for residents and visitors. The upgraded section connected the national road to the parking area near the historic Civil War barracks, a popular access point to the Cabo de Santa Pola viewpoint.
FIRST WOMAN REACHES 'OFICIAL' RANK IN SANTA POLA POLICE
María Dulcinea Bonmatí Pastor has officially become the first woman to achieve the
rank of 'Oficial' (officer) in the local Santa Pola Police force, following nearly 25 years of dedicated service.
The recognition took place in the plenary hall of the Santa Pola City Council, marking what the Chief Commissioner described as "a historic event" for the force and the community.

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Almería at 7:13am on 14th July, with tremors felt in several areas of the southeast, including parts of Granada, Murcia, and Alicante.
The quake, with an epicenter about 32 km from Níjar and a depth of just 2 km, caused tremors lasting around 10 to 15 seconds. While no damage has been reported, the Android seismic alert system was activated in affected provinces.
In Alicante, mobile phones received a warning urging residents to stay alert for possible aftershocks and to follow safety recommendations:
• Wear shoes
• Check for gas leaks
• Avoid damaged buildings Due to the intensity of the earthquake, the National Geographic Institute issued a tsunami warning (deactivated after a few minutes) for several provinces, including Alicante, Melilla, Almería, Murcia, Granada, Málaga, and Ceuta.

Acts of Kindness in Support of Local Cancer Charity
A group of dedicated knitters have been creating these handmade dolls inspired by a popular "Acts of Kindness" initiative in the UK - and they have been a massive hit in Gran Alacant!
A fantastic €210 has already been raised in support of Bruised But Not Broken, a cancer support charity providing services to those in and around Gran Alacant. These dolls are available to buy at Tommy’s bar and Quicksave on Avda. Escandinavia for 3€ each.
From 1st August up to Christmas, the knitters will be raising funds for the San Jose Orphanage in Orihuela.
The charity walk on Sunday 29th June raised a fantastic £287/€330 (with 80€ from Gran Alacant!) in support of CHUF, Children’s Heart Unit Fund – a UK-based charity supporting children with heart conditions and their families.
This local walk coincided with CHUF’s annual Toddle & Family Fun Day. A big thank you to everyone who donated!

A LOAD OF RUBBISH...
Sadly, the situation is not improving and the photo is from just this morning. The bins are empty but unfortunately people are being lazy and dumping items at the side. It's noticed that this is much worse in the months when we gave a lot of visitors. We are going to raise the situation at the community annual general meeting next week, again!
Once again, thank you for all your help with this matter. Kind regards, John

INDALO WEEKEND
Saturday 21st – 22nd June
Twenty one bowlers went down to Mojacar to play our annual match with our friends from Indalo Bowls Club. The weather was scorching which meant on the first day we weren’t able to complete the eighteen ends. On the second day as we played in the morning all eighteen ends were completed. Both days saw some excellent bowling from both teams. Unfortunately for us Indalo won the cup back. So all to play for next year. On both evenings everyone enjoyed dinner and a get together for a few after dinner drinks. Thanks to Cindy for organising a very enjoyable weekend.
CHICKEN RUN
Sunday 29th June
As the weather has been extremely hot it was decided we would only play fourteen ends with a refreshment break after seven ends. The chickens were won by Des Freeman with twenty eight shots and Bill Winterburn with twenty five shots. Maggie Crawford and Neil Help won the eggs. Thank you to Leslie and Graham Smythe who sponsored the chickens, Julia and Ian Hamilton who sponsored the eggs. The football card was won by Gerry (visiting from Scotland) with Leicester. As usual everyone who played enjoyed the morning.
FRIDAY SUMMER LEAGUE
Friday 11th July
The first Friday Summer League went very well. We played two rinks of trips and one rink of pairs. As it is still very hot we only played twelve ends, everyone agreed that was enough. After playing we went to the Belfry where we enjoyed a meal and drinks. As it was Lynne’s birthday we gave her a cake and of course sang Happy Birthday.
FRIENDSHIP CUP
Monday 30th June
We had a good morning bowling at La Marina Bowls Club although it was very hot. The bowls went La Marinas way but the second half of the competition will be held at Monte Mar in September so hopefully we can reverse the result then. After the game we enjoyed lunch with the players from La Marina.
BARBEQUE
Saturday 5th July
Twenty eight members attended the summer barbeque. The chefs did a great job, thank you to Ian, Maggie Crawford and Steve Leatherland. Also thank you to Ian and Julia Hamilton for arranging everything. It was a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all.

The Glassmaker
By Tracy Chevalier
It is 1486 and Venice is a wealthy opulent centre for trade. Orsola Rosso is the eldest daughter in a family of glassmakers on Murano, the island revered for the craft.
As a woman, she is not meant to work with glass - but she has the hands for it, the heart and a vision. When her father dies, she teaches herself to make glass beads in secret and her work supports the Rosso family fortunes.
Skipping like a stone through the centuries, in a Venice where time moves as slowly as molten glass, we follow Orsola and her family as they live through creative triumph and heartbreaking loss; from a plague devastating Venice to Continental soldiers stripping its palazzos bare; from the domination of Murano and its maestros to the transformation of the city of trade into a city of tourists. In every era the Rosso women ensure that their work and their bonds endure.
Beginning in the height of the Renaissance and hopscotching with ease through the centuries to the present day, the author examines the ever changing city of Venice through the eyes of Orsola Rosso. I have never been to Venice or the island of Murano but the author certainly captured the roar of the furnace, the sweat and the beauty of Venetian glass.
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

WHAT ARE AQUA CLASSES?
Aqua classes are exceptionally popular, with thousands taking part every week. There are, however, some common misconceptions that people associate with the classes. These can be anything from believing that it is an easy option and only for unfit participants, all the way to considering it only suitable for older people.
In truth, Aqua classes have more health and fitness benefits than most other group exercise classes and they are actually among the most effective for burning calories. You can burn 400-500 calories during a typical session depending on how hard you are working. It helps you lose weight, strengthens and tones muscles and improves your fitness levels without putting a lot of strain through your joints making this class particularly appealing for people with mobility issues.
GETTING STARTED
Getting started with Aqua is simple. All you need to bring along is suitable swimwear, a noodle and a bottle of water. It is important you stay hydrated throughout the session particularly in the HOT Summer months.
PICKING THE BEST SPOT IN THE POOL
Aqua BootCamp: This will depend on your height. The best place to stand is where the water comes up to your mid chest. Standing here allows you to get maximum benefit from the exercises. You do not need to be able to swim to attend an Aqua class, however, if you are less confident in the water it is advisable that you stand close to the edge of the pool and in slightly shallower water.
Deep Water Aqua: You can go anywhere in the deep end! You will be suspended in the water with the aid of a flotation belt. Your feet will NOT touch the ground. Using your core to keep you on one spot, this will make for a more intense workout. You will burn more calories and feel more benefits. Please note you will need to be a confident swimmer to take part!
HOW HARD DO YOU WORK?
One of the great benefits of Aqua classes is that you can choose your own level, without any pressure to push yourself too hard. This means that if you are new to exercise, or just getting back into it after a long time, then you can gradually work harder each session.
Each time you attend, you will be building up your stamina and, importantly, your confidence. One of the key benefits of Aqua classes is that they are accessible to everyone, irrespective of fitness levels.
LOW IMPACT FOR JOINTS
Being in the water means that all your joints are supported. This means you are less likely to have to endure any joint pain compared to land based activities. Resistance exercise is particularly important for improving bone density and helping to prevent osteoporosis.
INCREASED FLEXIBILITY
As well as helping you burn calories, lose weight, tone muscles and improve stamina, Aqua classes can also help you become more flexible and improve your range of movement. This is, once again, thanks to the resistance offered by the water,
helping strengthen your joints and the muscles around them without putting any unnecessary stress through them.
DECREASED HEART RATE
In the water, due to the increase in pressure, your heart rate is around 10-15% less than it is out of it. As a result, you can do more exercise thanks to this lower heart rate.
FUN AND SOCIABLE
As well as offering a fantastic workout, Aqua classes are a great way to meet new people.
Whilst the exercises themselves are fun, the music is specifically chosen to motivate you to work harder and the instructors ensure everyone in class is having a great time.
ARE YOU READY TO
EXPERIENCE THE BENEFITS OF DEEP WATER AQUA?
With the purchase of new Aqua Flotation Belts, we are thrilled to announce that we will be offering more opportunities for our Water Babies to try the Deep Water Aqua!
You are VERY WELCOME to come join us for a class and take your Aqua fitness to the next level!

Victory Over Japan 80th Anniversary Celebration
Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) commemorates the Allied victory over Japan in World War II. It is primarily celebrated on August 15th, 1945, the day Japan announced its surrender, although the formal signing of the surrender document took place on September 2nd, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
What is the significance of the victory over Japan?
V-J Day, or Victory over Japan Day, marks the end of World War II, one of the deadliest and most destructive wars in history. When President Harry S. Truman announced on Aug. 14, 1945, that Japan had surrendered unconditionally, war-weary citizens around the world erupted in celebration.
Why did Japan lose WWII?
Japan's tanks could not compete with their opposite numbers. The Empire's logistical base was undeveloped for modern warfare. While the Allies could produce large numbers of trained pilots, Japan produced very few. When its elite airmen were lost at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, Japan could not replace them.

Gran Alacant Ladies GALs
We hope everyone is having a wonderful hot summer. Come rain or shine we still continue with our social meet-ups throughout the very warm season. Luckily we choose venues with plenty of shade or aircon!
We had a fantastic lunch at a new place called The Flavour on the Carribassi Bars site. The fish and chips portions were very generous as was the Chicken Escalop. Everything was delicious and service was great. They donated a free meal as a raffle prize for our SATS dog charity too. We have raised well over €500 from our members this year which is fantastic.
As we liked Andres and Texicano International, we went back for our Coffee/ Breakfast morning. We were very spoilt with healthy choices as well as naughty crepes. We ladies chatted away for ages and had a great time.
Remember any lady with a connection to Gran Alacant can join our Facebook site. There is lots of support and it's good to be able to share knowledge and have somewhere to ask questions. Look for Gals (Gran Alacant Ladies) on Facebook or message Joanne Whearity, Selina Bruce or Claire Williams. We will be pleased to hear from you.

SECRETS OF A HAPPY MARRIAGE
AN INTERVEW WITH ANGELA & GORDON
This month we meet local Gran Alacant residents Angela and Gordon Knapman, who have been married for 62 years!
How long have you been living in Gran Alacant?
We moved to GA in 2005 on a whim, we had never even been to Spain before. Prior to that, we lived in Nottingham since 1988. We have never looked back. We have a lovely life here.
How did you meet?
Angela: “We met in November 1957 when I was 13 and Gordon 16. Gordon was a Junior Seaman in the Royal Navy stationed at HMS St Vincent, Gosport. My mother was asked if she would put Gordon’s parents up for a night as they were attending Gordon’s passing out parade so she invited them and Gordon for afternoon tea. We started dating shortly after this.
Tell us about your wedding day?
We got married at St John’s Church in Gosport on a lovely sunny day on 22 June 1963 followed by a small reception in a community hall. After the reception, we went to Portsmouth and took the Isle of Wight ferry to a Guest House in Sandown where we had our honeymoon.
Tell us about your family?
We have a daughter, Wendy, who is married and lives in Nottingham. Wendy and her husband visit regularly for holidays.
What is the best thing about your relationship?
We have a very good relationship and do everything together apart from cooking which I unfortunately have to do and hate it.
Have you had any tough times and if so how did you get through them?
A very tough time was when Wendy was working as a dancer on a cruise ship and had a very serious accident on a quad bike in Aruba. She almost lost her life.
Fortunately she had very good treatment and recovered but they were very worrying times. We got through that time by supporting each other.
What do you love most about each other?
The things we love about each other are fun and busy days in our villa and doing things together.
What is your TOP TIPS for a HAPPY Marriage?
Top tips are respect for each other, never go to bed on an argument and live each day to the FULL!
Would you like to share your secrets of a happy marriage?

Summer Fair Results
- 12th July 2025 -
Wow what a fantastic afternoon for ASPETGA Summer Fair! Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported us and despite the tremendous heat we raised a fabulous €384 and a special thank you also to Jane Pugh and Siane Green who never stopped working all day running the tombola.
Huge thanks as always to Skipper Bar and Simona De Iulis and her team for keeping us all fed and watered and for the use of their speaker so our wonderful line dancers Gran Alacant Stompers could have some fun in the sun led by Sue Shepherd.
Our tombola tables were chock full of fab prizes and everyone who bought a ticket was delighted that they all won a prize!!!!
Again thank you everyone for your support and to The GA Advertiser and Lou for always sharing our events and turning up to take wonderful photos.
Our Autumn Fair which I guarantee will be much cooler will be on Saturday 4th October in Masa Square.

MEET YOUR GRAN ALACANT NEIGHBOURS
With Alba Callejas
BACKGROUND
Alba opened her Podiatry Clinic ‘Happy Feet’ on Monday 24th February 2025 at Evoca Living, formerly Santara Life Resort. Since then, many of Gran Alacant’s residents have been enjoying the very best in foot care from her.
Although the clinic in Gran Alacant has only been open a short time, Alba has been working as a podiatrist for over 10 years.
WHERE DID YOU WORK BEFORE
Alba “I worked in a Podiatry Clinic in Murcia and commuted every day. When my second daughter was born I knew that my time in Murcia was over and that I had to move to this area.”
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE EVOCA LIVING
“Ever since I finished my degree I have always been clear about one thing: ‘If I ever opened a clinic it would be in Gran Alacant.’ I believe it is a wonderful place to open a Podiatry Clinic. When the opportunity came up in the beautiful Evoka Living resort I took the plunge. This clinic was born from the need to create a relaxing, comfortable space for my patients.”
WHAT MADE YOU GET INTO PODIATRY
“It was my father who encouraged me to study podiatry. I really wanted to be a physiotherapist.
Now I am grateful to my father for encouraging me to study podiatry.”
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO LOOK AFTER OUR FEET
Looking after your feet is crucial for overall health and well-being because they are the foundation of your body, supporting your weight and enabling mobility. Healthy feet can prevent pain, improve balance, and reduce the risk of falls and injuries. Neglecting foot care can lead to various problems, including infections, chronic pain, and even affect your overall health.
Here´s why foot care is so important:
Mobility and Independence
Healthy feet are essential for walking, running, and other physical activities,
allowing you to maintain an active lifestyle and remain independent.
Pain Prevention
Proper foot care can prevent common issues like corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, and bunions, which can cause pain and discomfort.
Posture and Balance
The complex structure of your feet plays a vital role in maintaining good posture and balance. Foot problems can affect your gait and lead to pain in other joints like your knees, hips, and back.
Overall Health Indicator
Foot problems can be early signs of underlying health conditions like diabetes, arthritis, or poor circulation.
Infection Prevention
Proper hygiene and foot care can prevent infections, especially in individuals with diabetes or other conditions that affect circulation and nerve function.
Improved Quality of Life
Taking care of your feet can improve your overall quality of life by reducing pain, increasing mobility, and enhancing your ability to participate in daily activities.
Reduced Risk of Falls
Foot pain or instability can increase the risk of falls, especially in older adults. Healthy feet contribute to better balance and stability, reducing the likelihood of falls.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB
“I love everything about my job and feel very fortunate to be able to work in podiatry. I try to convey my passion for my work to my patients by offering a high-quality, personalised service where everyone feels like they are at home.
Interview By Lynne Lowe
I believe prevention is the best tool we have for good health. What I like most about my job is seeing how thankful people are for giving them a better quality of life through foot care. I am facinated by feet which motivates me to continue developing in my profession.”

Rooftops We Love
Every summer we like to put together a little list of places we’ve enjoyed lately. We’ve done beaches, restaurants, sunset spots… and this time we’re going up. This month’s Home Turf is all about rooftops.
It’s no secret that July and August can be intense on the Costa Blanca. When the heat kicks in and the beach gets too crowded, there’s nothing better than heading up to a rooftop for a bit of breeze, a cold drink, and a view.
We’ve always loved rooftops. When we travelled more often, we’d always try to squeeze one in – Bangkok, Lisbon, New York… it became a bit of a ritual. Not necessarily the fanciest place in town, but something about being above it all just felt special. Spain is definitely catching up with the rooftop trend, and Alicante is doing it really well.
So here are a few of our favourite spots from this summer (and past summers). Some we go back to every year, and a couple are new discoveries. Nothing scientific here – just places we genuinely enjoy.
LA MILAGROSA, ALICANTE OLD TOWN
This might be the first rooftop we ever tried in Alicante, and we still love it. It’s tucked away in the old town, above some small apartments, and the view of the castle is unbeatable. It’s relaxed, usually not too crowded, and feels like a proper summer evening spot. We’ve had a few birthdays here – always a good vibe.
MIRA MIRALTA, EUROSTARS PÓRTICO
We stumbled upon this one recently and were really impressed. It’s right behind the city hall, so you’re bang in the middle of things, but somehow it feels peaceful. You get full views of the city, the castle, the marina… and the bar has a bit more polish than others. A good place to bring friends visiting from out of town.
HOTEL ALICANTE GRAN SOL (RESTAURANT ON THE 26TH FLOOR)
We’ll be honest – this building has never been our favourite in terms of looks. But
once you’re up there, that all disappears. The restaurant has incredible views over the whole bay. You can spot Gran Alacant, Tabarca, even Santa Pola on a clear day. It’s definitely more of a sit-down dinner kind of place, but the view makes it worth it.
HOTEL PORT ALICANTE CITY & BEACH
This one’s in San Juan, so a bit further out, but we love it for the food. The rooftop is sleek, stylish, and the menu is actually very good – which isn’t always the case with rooftops. It feels a bit more grown-up. One to dress up for and maybe make a night of it.
TERRAZA 360º SUN PALACE, ALBIR
This is outside our usual range, but one of the best for sunset. On a clear evening, you get the whole Benidorm skyline in the distance, the sea, the hills – it’s all there. We went on a whim last year and now it’s a regular stop when we’re in the area. Definitely worth the trip.
That’s our list for this summer – no rankings, just rooftops we’ve enjoyed.
We’d love to know if there are any good ones closer to Gran Alacant or Santa Pola. If you know of a spot with a great view (and preferably decent drinks!), let us know. We’re always happy to discover new favourites.

STOP WARS (GAZA, SUDAN, UKRAINE…)
The very first thing we would like to do in this article is to say thanks to all the people who have written about us at GA Advertiser Facebook for their very kind (but a bit exaggerated) words. Thank you so much.
But we also would like to qualify some matters about it:
• The person who feeds selflessly the three neutered and controlled cats which live at Masa Square is Mrs Jane P., and when she is away, the one who does it is Skipper owner Simona.
• It’s true that we have taken care of the cats (which includes neutering and treating their wounds) willingly, out of our opening hours, but it’s also true that there have been people who have contributed with their money for making this possible: for example for paying the operation of a female cat, and for the vaccines and treatments for a kitten which got trapped in a drain pipe at the Plaza. We would like to remark that – as far as we remember - all the donors were women. Thanks very much, ladies.
• There are also people who donate regularly for stray animals (thanks, Simona and Marlene). Fortunately, there are some good people around us who care about animals and contribute with their money to have them neutered, despite is the Town Hall which is supposed to do it.
• We also know that our case is not the only one. Most Vet practices have special prices for treating street cats. We all have the same goal: improving animals quality of life. People who cares contributes with their time or money, depending on the individual. Thanks again to everybody.
These words mustn’t be interpreted in any way as an appeal for future donations. We
make a living by treating our clients pets, and that’s enough for us.
Another important subject would be the extremely high temperatures we are suffering this summer. Heat is very dangerous for animals (and people), specially for those ones with previous illnesses, and for brachycephalic dogs (Bulldogs, Boxers, etc) which cannot breathe properly due to the anatomy of their head and throat. We should never leave them in the car, not even a few minutes, because they may suffer a lethal heat stroke. If you find an animal in a car, for example in a supermarket parking, we must dial 062 and report Guardia Civil.
If you find a wild animal (a bird, for example) stunned by high temperatures, the best thing is to move it to a cool and quiet place (a cardboard box may help), and normally, after a few minutes, it will be recovered. If you are not sure about the condition of the bird, you should take it to Local Police or to a Vet practice. Insectivorous birds (swallows, swifts), suffer very much with high temperatures and are normally difficult to treat unless you are experienced, so you’d better don’t try to feed them or force them to drink. They must have specialized care, the sooner the better. Goodwill normally is not enough, and trying to help them at home is not a good idea. Something similar happens with chicks which have “fallen” from the nest: what is really happening is that they are taking flying lessons under their parents supervision. This is the case if they have feathers, so just leave them alone. A different thing is if they are featherless: if we are unable to put it back in its nest. It should be taken to Local Police or a Vet practice. Don’t hesitate to do it: at least at Santa Pola we can assure Local Police and Guardia Civil care about wildlife.
And what about the title of the article? Simple: we want a better world for both animals and people.
"... This lovely couple go above and beyond with their care and compassion. They are my own pets vet as well and I would recommend them to anybody." - Jane
"Gracias to you both for all your care and dedication , you have been soo caring to us when we had to put Molly, to sleep in 2017, and then Layla only recently and it was clear to see how much you care too. It was soo hard to let them go, but you understood our pain and were able to support us as well as being the best vets." - Linda
"Best vets around, we used them from 2004. Thank you so much, so kind and caring." - Valerie
"Muchísimas gracias por ayudar a tantos gatos que estaban sufriendo en la calle." - Sandra
"I sort out emergency treatment at this vets as my current one was closed. They did above and beyond, also sorted documentation for me. So a big thankyou from me."- Em
"Ellos cuidan de mis gatos desde que me mudé hace 3 años. Grandes profesionales y sobre todo, mucha humanidad. Enhorabuena.."Montserrat
"Despite there being at least three veterinarians in Gran Alacant, this is the only one that I bring my dog to. Sergio and Liliana take excellent care of Pico, and always remember his name (but not mine)" - Michael
"The best vets we have ever had. Proper animal lovers." - Jackie

I often read on forums that a Will can be organised directly through a notary effectively cutting out the “middle man’’ saving 40€ or so on average against our own fees and this is 100% true as if you are simply looking to save money upfront, going directly to a notary will always be cheaper than using ourselves to produce your legal documents and then paying a notary for their services afterwards.
WHEN YOU DIE IN SPAIN IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN IT’S ALSO ABOUT WHAT WON’T
beneficiaries have as little hassle and expense and cost as possible once you have died.
Clients of Thy Will Be Done are ASSURED of the following:
1. Their beneficiaries will not need to travel to Spain to arrange an NIE number – our UK office can easily organise this directly with them and the Spanish Consulate;
2. Their beneficiaries will not have to seek out an English-speaking Abogado (solicitor) in Spain and pay for that Abogado to have Power of Attorney to act for them – if we are nominated as executors within a Spanish Will, we will immediately liaise directly with the UK beneficiaries in English and the Spanish authorities in Spanish;
+ iva if the client has Priority Client Cover in place (just 4.99€ per month with no minimum contract);
4. Their beneficiaries will not have to deal with 2 legal entities, one for the Spanish estate and one for the UK estate as we take care of probate in both jurisdictions seamlessly at the same time.
So, when considering if it’s worth cutting out the middleman you should perhaps consider just one question?
What would your beneficiaries think?
However, let’s take a minute to remember WHY we are organising a Will for your Spanish estate in the first place –it is to guarantee that your wishes are adhered to AND to ENSURE that your
3. Their beneficiaries will not have to pay an unknown amount for Spanish probate to be conducted as our probate fees are guaranteed in advance at just 1.75% + iva of the estate value as standard or even lower at only 1.16%

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP
A group of international football fans in Gran Alacant are celebrating the return of Elche to La Liga, and games against the giants of Spanish football such as Barcelona and Real Madrid. The local club secured promotion from Segunda on the last day of the season, with Reckless Bar packed out for the away game in A Coruña.
With the new season starting in August, home matches see the local supporters group meeting at Reckless Bar and carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards. Away games are screened at Reckless Bar for the group to watch together.
Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand. Tickets for matches can be purchased via the club website at www. elchecf.es usually during the week of the game.
The group currently consists of a large number of season ticket holders, and a growing number of regular match attendees, all affiliated to the Peña Internacional de Elche CF. For the new season the number of season ticket holders in the group has increased, with the football club also growing their supporter base on their return to the top flight which starts this month.
Home games in August are the season opener vs Real Betis on Monday 18th at 21:00, then hosting regional rivals Levante on Friday 29th at 19:30, either side of a trip to the capital to face Atletico Madrid.

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL
PUTTING OUR FEET UP!
The Ladies squad is currently taking a wellearned rest as its now seriously hot in GA. However, from all accounts there are lots of Grandchildren being encouraged to help Nan practise her passing and shooting skills ready for a return to arms in September.
Our column in September will hopefully contain news about the annual charity match against the Men’s team so watch this space for details.
Plans for the World Walking Football Tournament in Torrevieja in October are now well under way. Over 70 teams have now been confirmed as competing. Team Spain has a training camp in June and September, and the final squad has now been announced. It’s safe to say that none of our squad have been called up but who knows – maybe next time!!
The tournament has attracted many bigname sponsors including CAXIA Bank and Avalon. We, meanwhile, remain grateful for

GA MENS WALKING FOOTBALL
Hello again. GAWF is taking a break during August to avoid the hot summer sun. We will get back together in September and an update on the time of the sessions will appear should they change.
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! If you wish to take part, Gran Alacant Walking Football club meets each Wednesday at 11am on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). The cost is only 1 euro per session. Please arrive around 10.50am to allow for teams to be arranged. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).
Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. Other groups are still running sessions during the summer but starting at 8am to avoid the worst of the heat. All are welcome to attend.
