Speakers Bureau: Voices of Leadership During our Speakers Bureau each month, we invite diverse leaders to share their personal journeys through life. From humble beginnings to extraordinary accomplishments each speakers provides insight into their transition from children to adulthood. Transparent stories and wisdom provided during each session allow our young men to confirm the leadership lessons they receive at BOMLA. Ambassador Kirk: Ambassador Kirk provided a clear and concise message about the steps necessary to reach our lifetime goals. His willingness to address the insightful and thought provoking questions from our students allowed us to delve deeper within his personal ideas and leadership traits. Additionally, Ambassador Kirk emphasized the importance of personal failure and struggle. Since technology so readily provides this generation with answers to life’s questions; he challenged our young men to accept and embrace their own uncomfortable challenges and struggles. Sweatt vs. Painter: Dr. Gary Lavergne from the University of Texas at Austin brought the story of the Civil Rights struggle of Mr. Heman Sweatt. The Sweatt family history included slavery, freedom and an intense desire for a great education to change the trajectory of his future. Our students learned a portion of the story which laid the ground work for Brown vs. The Board of Education.

Students in grades 8th through 11th had the opportunity to take the Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test this fall. While the results reveal that there is still work to do we are pleased that our students’ performance ranked them in the upper quartile both nationally and state-wide. The results are as follows:

Good things happen at the most unexpected times– While reflecting on that thought, Mrs. Lyria Howland has proven to be one of the most driven and committed supporters of the work here at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. To date, she has led the “Friends of Barack Obama Foundation” in establishing the foundation’s non-profit

students have been afforded the opportunity to either speak to a college representative from the colleges listed below, or visit the colleges in person:

Reaching the Students: The Benefits of National Board Certification There are currently 10,112 teachers serving the students of the Dallas Independent School District. Of those 10,000 teachers, only 18 educators in this district have earned the highest professional credential in our field. This January, one of BOMLA’s very own, Mrs. Olubukola Olaloko, earned the National Board Certification in the field of Science. Mrs. Olaloko joined the BOMLA staff in 2012. She currently teaches 6th grade Science, Chemistry, and Physics. Mrs. Olaloko is the proud mother of three and has been married for 30 years. She is from Nigeria and has a masters in Chemistry. Mrs. Olaloka and the 17 other educators

across the district, voluntarily participate in the rigorous process established by The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NTBPS). In some cases, it could take an educator up to three years to earn this distinction. When asked why she pursued this difficult certification, Mrs. Olaloko stated, “This certification is about the students. A couple of years ago, I was considering earning my doctorate in Chemistry. However, I realized that pursuing the doctorate was about mepursuing the National Certification was about the students. I want to reach the students; and I this has helped me.” Mrs. Olaloko is fully aware of the impact that education can have on the lives of students. Growing up, she watched her mother, lead a K-12 school in Nigeria. We are proud of Mrs. Olalaloko and we anticipate that more BOMLA educators will pursue the distinction of being nationally certified in the near future.

Rigor & High Expectations At BOMLA, we are committed to providing the most challenging academic curriculum possible. Therefore all of our classes are designed according to the advanced placement program developed by College Board. This year, the juniors, are taking three AP courses and two dual credit courses. It is our expectation that each student that matriculates through BOMLA will graduate with an Associate’s Degree and the ability to successfully manage the demands of Higher Education . All students in grades 6-8 are enrolled in preadvanced placement courses. The main difference between Advance Placement courses (AP) and Pre-Advance Placement courses is t hat students enrolled in AP courses can test out of similar courses in college if they score a 3 or higher on the cumulative AP exam taken at the end of the school year. The curriculum of the Pre-AP courses offered here prepares all students for the rigor of the AP courses they are expected to take in upper school.

From L to R. Nakia Douglas, Members of Leadership Dallas, Dr. Blackburn, & Lyria status, exposing our school to new friends, and leading the foundation through fundraising efforts. To date, the foundation has raised $43,000.00 (inclusive of a matching grant from the Boone Foundation). To meet the goal of the matching grant, “Friends”, faculty/staff, students and parents are working tirelessly to raise the remaining $7,000.00 by March 31, 2014. The funds raised collectively will be used to sponsor enrichment opportunities for students, professional development for the faculty and staff, and to purchase instructional materials for the faculty and staff.

Sharing Our Story with the White House The Third Term Summer Enrichment Programs Students of BOMLA enter the school each year not only looking forward to the traditional school term, but they are expected to and encouraged to participate in summer camps and internships. These experiences enhance their knowledge and provide exposure to a plethora of career paths. Some of the internships students have participated in over the past two summers include: the University of Dallas STEM camps, STEMPrep Project at Southern Methodist University, Boy Scouts of America Camp, Dallas Community College Tech-Prep Program, Pat & Emmit Smith Team 22/ and Camp Champions. During the summer of 2014, several students will attend the aforementioned camps as well as participate in the Mayor’s Internship. Additionally, we will have our first upper school applicant apply to Baylor’s College of Dentistry summer Internship.

The Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy journalism class has gone digital this year, thanks to a grant award of $2000 from the Junior League of Dallas, Grants for Innovative Teaching Program. Students can now produce the school newsletter in digital format using camcorders, digital cameras, editing software, iPads, and computers.

BOMLA Gives Back Several of our students recently gave a motivational speech and recruitment talk to students at our partner school, H. I. Holland Elementary School. Brothers Kaleb Davis, Dorian Mundy, Alfredo Osario and Daniel Recendis spoke about their journeys at our campus from a reimaged student perspective.

Each month, students research and compose time sensitive articles about national, state, local, and school events and then report these stories from a small studio located in the school library. These experiences in reporting help the students improve their verbal and writing skills while learning the technical and technological side of broadcast and digital delivery.

Most importantly, they spoke about dreaming and developing a work ethic towards accomplishing their goals. The highlight of the visit for the audience was the recognition of Brother Recendis being an alumni of H. I. Holland.
