BOMLA Times Issue 02 Fall Edition

During the first two weeks of the summer, new students participate in League of Extraordinary Gentleman (LXG). This camp serves as a transitional opportunity to assist brothers with their acclamation to the campus. The aims of the camp are: 1. Immersing incoming students into the BOMLA Culture 2. Acclimating students to BOMLA practices and procedures 3. Challenging students to problem-solve as leaders This was our third summer hosting LXG and subsequently was our most successful! Several of our returning students wrote curriculum, taught classes, and lead groups during LXG. In an effort to parallel the rigor of our school year, the student leaders also decided to change the camp reading from 7 Habits of a Successful Teenager to Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck. We knew the camp was successful when we looked at the grades for the first six weeks.

During our Speakers Bureau each month, we invite diverse leaders to share their personal journeys through life. From humble beginnings to extraordinary accomplishments, each speaker provides insight into his or her transition from childhood to adulthood. Transparent stories and wisdom provided during each session allow our young men to confirm the leadership lessons they receive at BOMLA. President Richard Fisher: Dallas Federal Reserve Bank: Richard Fisher, president of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, talked with the young men about the importance of education. Mr. Fisher shared his experiences and struggles as a first-generation college student and helped the young men understand how education can change the trajectory of one’s life. Mr. Fisher also talked with the young men about making decisions and learning from mistakes. The young men were captivated with his story and struggle as they embraced Mr. Fisher’s sage advice. General Colin Powell-Hart Global Leader’s Lecture Series at Southern Methodist University General Colin Powell was the Distinguished Lecturer for the 2014 - 2015 Hart Global Leaders Lecture Series. Thirty of our students were privileged to hear General Powell's life story of persistence, hard work and commitment to excellence. The message was clear and precise for all in attendance.
