Know the Cathedral of San Ildefonso, in the Plaza Grande. On one side is the Fernando García Ponce-Macay Museum, with an interesting collection of regional contemporary art. On the south side of the square you will see the Plateresque style facade of the Casa de Montejo, which today functions as a museum and cultural center. Try, before leaving the center, the street food craving that locals love: it is called marquesita and is a crepe, crispy and rolled, stuffed with cheese and the sweet you choose.

Walk through Paseo de Montejo, the avenue filled with mansions where the rich landowners once lived. Also, you can visit the Canton Palace, which today houses the Regional Museum of Anthropology. Don’t miss out and walk to the Lucas de Galvez Market, six block from the Plaza Grande.

Take a round trip to Izamal. The facades are yellow, the streets are cobbled. Life revolves around the Convent of San Antonio de Padua and its huge columnar atrium. Nearby is the Casa de los Santos, a perfumery and sacred art store that also functions as a hotel and then eat Yucatecan delicacies at Kinich Restaurant.

You have to know Chichen Itza, an extinct Mayan city 120 km east of Mérida and considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its imposing palaces and buildings, and its innovative construction techniques will fill you with amazement. Meet the colonial town of Valladolid. Enter the Church of San Servacio. Walk along the Causeway of the Friars to the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena. You will find hats, hammocks and the exclusive Meson de Malleville. Eat at the Taberna de los Frailes and take time to admire more than 3,000 handmade pieces coming from all over the country.

Conozcan la Catedral de San Ildefonso, en la Plaza Grande. A un lado se encuentra el Museo Fernando García Ponce-Macay, con una interesante colección de arte contemporáneo regional. En el costado sur de la plaza verán la fachada de estilo plateresco de la Casa de Montejo, que hoy funciona como museo y centro cultural. Prueben antes de abandonar el centro, el antojito callejero que los locales adoran: se llama marquesita y es una crepa, crujiente y enrollada, rellena de queso y el dulce que elijan.

Recorran el largo Paseo de Montejo, la avenida poblada de mansiones donde alguna vez habitaron los ricos hacendados del henequén. Aquí se ubica el Palacio Cantón, que hoy aloja el Museo Regional de Antropología. Vayan al Mercado Lucas de Gálvez, a seis cuadras de la Plaza Grande.
