Chamber Adds Another Quality Program to Its Weekly Lineup with Paul's 'Chamber Check-In'

Twice a week Paul goes live on the Chamber Facebook page with different members for a “Chamber Check-In”. To date, Paul has done 28 Chamber Check-Ins — these short chats have showcased members across all industries from our favorite craft soda maker BuckSnort Soda Company to news organization Idaho EdNews and many more. eet Garth Callaghan. Callaghan is a three-time cancer survivor and began writing notes on napkins to his daughter when she was 12 years old and including them in her lunch boxes. After being given an eight percent chance to live beyond five years, Callaghan wrote notes every day for the remainder of his daughter’s high school years. Callaghan quickly became a nationwide phenom known as “the Napkin Notes Dad” and authored his first book in 2014, “Napkin Notes.”

Callaghan’s “Napkin Notes” represent recovery, hope, courage, and resiliency — the theme of this year’s Gala. “No human on this planet is a better messenger of recovery and hope than Garth Callaghan. The Boise Metro Chamber has somewhat of a tradition of attracting people with stories so powerful, they become movies. Garth’s story continues that tradition, and we are so excited to have this American hero come to Boise,” said Bill Connors, President and CEO of the Boise Metro Chamber. In addition, comedian and entertainer James Cunningham will emcee the event.

Currently with social distancing around the country, instructors have had to use technology to continue to teach and deliver lessons.

What do you enjoy most about your company or organization?

The transformation that happens with people as they learn to dance. My heart just beams when I see a student get a little more spring in their step, have more confidence in themselves, and watch that passion grow. Learning to dance is scary, but we have watched as they learn through our process of teaching what they are really capable of. And not just in dance. We see it move into their everyday life. We have seen friends find community with each other, couples grow closer together, and businesses help their staff connect unlike anything available. The energy is just contagious!

Back in August, Bill was named to the Idaho Interstate Air Service Committee, which held its first meeting this August at the Idaho State Capitol. Many thanks to Sen. Dan Johnson, Chairman, and Rep. Caroline Troy, Co-Chair for their leadership in sponsoring the legislation to create this committee to try to better connect Idaho businesses and citizens. The Chamber and the Idaho Chamber Alliance both recognize that robust air service creates robust economies.

While these discussions may seem odd at a time of massive air service contraction, we think it just might be the best time to find willing partners.

ADVOCACY UPDATE Stay up to date on your city and state's government affairs

This month, our advocacy efforts have largely focused on the next phase of COVID relief, specifically the expansion of the Payroll Protection Program to include 501c(6) organizations as eligible recipients. The Boise Metro Chamber proudly advocated for PPP assistance for you, our members, even though as a 501c(6) we are not eligible ourselves. The pandemic effects on our own organization are extensive. We’re encouraging our federal delegation to advocate for c(6)s to be included in the next round of COVID relief so we may continue our vital operations as we emerge from this crisis.

Additionally, we were proud to thank Representative Mike Simpson this month for his leadership on the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act, legislation that will provide a much needed funding boost for infrastructure maintenance on public lands. Sixty percent of Idaho is public land and serves as an integral component of our outdoor recreation tourism. We believe the maintenance and repair of infrastructure on our public lands is essential as travelers continue to choose outdoor activities while our state reopens.

DOING GOOD FOR THE CITY OF BOISE Born from the crisis of the quarantine, City of Good is the concept of several like-minded business people long-established in Boise. They took what is widely known by those who live here — that Boiseans mobilize when there is a need to help others and results are optimized when we combine resources — and are working to infuse this axiom into programs intent on building a resilient local economy. Their meal box program serves as an example: Purchased meals (available for $15) help to reemploy local restaurant workers at a livable wage, a majority of whom have seen their hours cut significantly during the pandemic. The meals, created by their inspired chefs, center on fresh and locally-sourced ingredients, thereby helping small, local farmers and ranchers who still need to sell their produce.

In partnership with the Boise School District, purchased City of Good meals help to fund 600 fresh meals for food-insecure kids every weekend. And yes, it’s those same chefs and their teams using that same local produce to create healthy, fresh meals for the students.
