Welcome to our 2023 Bull Sale. 15 Years in the making, we are proud to present to you the first crop of extra age long yearling bulls at Redline Livestock. When we pushed our herd back to April/May calving in 2020, we knew that a significant change would also come about in our bull marketing. We held back the entire group of yearling bulls that fall. That is the group of bulls before you now. They have not been picked through; the group is complete. The

bulls have been developed as long yearlings. They will be capable of fulfilling the same breeding needs our customers have had in the past, with the added bonus of a few extra months maturity.

The Bulls will be penned for viewing, open house style, Wednesday March 29 and Thursday March 30. Everyone is welcome to come and view the bulls and stay for lunch and hospitality.

Delivery

Redline Livestock will deliver all bulls within 150km free of charge. Bulls may be kept at Redline Livestock until April 15 for no cost. After that time, bulls will be kept for $5/day. Buyers who pick up their bull within a week of sale day will recieve a $50 discount per bull.

Terms & Conditions

Cattle will sell under the standard terms & conditions put forward from the breed association. These are available upon request.

Returning Farm Gate users:

How To Bid in a Timed Auction

Now that you are logged in and your account phone number / email is verified you are able to bid on an upcoming sale. Simply find the lot you are interested in bidding on. After you have found the lot there are 2 options for bidding on the lot.

- Place Next Bid – to place the next bid on the item, you see the amount in the first box, you simply click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed.

- Max Bid Amount – to place a max bid you put your max bid in the second box listed as “Max Bid” on the item, and then click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed as the next bid. With the Max Bid placed the computer will then keep you as the high bidder to the max amount you have placed. This can be a great feature if you are not able to give 100% attention to the sale close out and protect your interest so you do not miss out on any lots you want to purchase. The Max Bid amount is completely confidential from the seller during the sale process.

Example of How the Max Bid Works - If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest. Please note that in some cases a lot value can change very quickly if 2 max bids are placed on the same lot competing against each other.

WatchList Feature

If you have items in multiple auctions or only a few from the same auction that you want to watch with out having to scroll through the entire list you can add the lots to your watchlist. On each lot you will see the “eye” button beside the bid button, by clicking this “watchlist” Icon that item is added to your personal watchlist for easy viewing of just your favorite lots in this sale or on the entire site.

What is Racehorse Style Close?

Racehorse style sales close when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.

How will Extended Bidding work? When we get to the close out end time, the clock for close extends with any bid placed after soft close time. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision and eliminate any one from sniping the last second bid. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in. It is recommended that you bid early in the extended bidding to keep the sale from going too long.

HOW WE USE IT

Hello and welcome to our 2023 bull sale. The past year has been somewhat of a whirlwind for us here. The twists and turns of being involved in this industry are something we are constantly adapting to. Always facing new challenges; we have a growing need to find our feet in the midst of ever changing, busy seasons. Steep learning curves are continuous. Here at Redline, the cattle are the foothold for our operation. The cows gave us our start, and they are our main livlihood. Neither of us have earned off-farm income for the past 12 years. With this in mind, we have put into practise some stringeant measures to ensure that the herd is, and remains profitable.

You will notice throughout the catalog, that we have included some data that you don’t see in the other catalogs. We have decided to include traits that we ourselves find valuable, using in-herd evaluations and results of data we have been entering on our cowherd.

We have come to value numbers. By entering as much data as we can into our system, we can look at our cowherd with unbiased eyes and really pinpoint which cows are pulling their weight, which are excelling above and beyond the rest of the herd. Perhaps most importantly; we can see which cows are not meeting expectations.

Joining the Cow Calf Herd Health Management System (CCHMS) has been a significant tool for growth. We use Herdtrax to enter data on every detail we can keep track of. We enter pedigrees, calvings, breedings, weights, rations, feedings, costs, treatings and so much more. Dr Waylon Wise helps us to run reports and index the cowherd, based on many factors. These include calves weaned, thier respective weights throughout their lives, replacements and secondary replacements retained from the cow, calving interval, health, etc. After preg check and health, temperment and age related culls, we use the index to cull out an additional 60 cows anually; the lowest indexing.

Indexing the cows makes sure that every bull in our pen comes from a cow who is earning her spot at the feed bunk. The bulls you see are raised from cows in the top percentages. We cut well over half of our bull calves every fall. The culled group of steers are then castrated and backgrounded.

Using the indexing to cull in this way does put a strain on our herd; short term. It is a long-term gain achieved by sacrificing individuals now, to grow the

group as a higher quality unit. The purebreds are competing against commercial cattle with a significant amount of hybrid vigor in their lineage. As a result, these cows are the most critically affected.

Our purebred cows are being run entirely alongside our commercial herd. The indexing will rank purebred replacement heifer high enough if the commercial replacements out-perform her; and they are outnumbered 3 to 1.

Of course; we agree that using our eyes is important in selections. But we don’t rely on them, or allow eyes alone to pick favorites.

With use of the numbers and reports, our favorite cows are now the ones that we trust are earning us a living. Who are paying for our farm. It is too easy to fall into a habit of carrying the cowherd. We need cows that can carry us.

We run 180 purebred females alongside 400 commercials. Essentially, 3 herds are run as a unit. There are no exceptions or second chances; regardless of the season. They winter, graze, and calve together. The purebred cows have to compete against the commercials in every aspect. This includes feeding, and on paper. The cattle are pushed to work hard, and there is no special treatment. All replacement selection is based on the whole herd comparisions. All culling is done the same.

OUR FUTURE GENERATION OF SALE HEIFERS & BULL RAISERS

In 2019 we began to adapt our commercial breeding program towards the inclusion of pedigreed F1 genetics, in addition to our existing commercial herd of 250 females. Here going forward, we are breeding groups of purebred females, and all of our purebred replacements, to strong herdsires of the opposing breed. The offspring have potential in many avenues including strong commercial replacements, recipient females, 4H projects, and sale heifers. By crossing all purebred replacements their first year, we are ensuring that the top up and coming seedstock females will also have an impact on the commercial herd.

weights, yearling weights, body condition scores, birth and health records, herd health protocols, and udder and feet scoring is already fully integrated into the commercial herd as well. Wanting to utilize this data to it’s fullest potential and broaden it furthermore, we have included feed efficiency, cowherd indexing, and return on investment calculations on a per-cow basis. Our hope is that this will help us over time to advance the commercial herd into a select, elite group of cows. By doing it on a large scale involving 300+ females, our hopes is that we can breed exceptional replacement females for our customers.

The motivation behind the pedigreed program is an ever increasing demand for F1 blaldy females, and a low supply of proof regarding first cross heifers. Our goal is to provide a large group of females with a pedigree, and data to back their performance. Every detail that we keep on the purebred herd, including birthweights, weaning

About Us

2023 marks year 15 at Redline Livestock. Within that time span, it has turned into a family operation. Life is more fun with our kids; Joni, Grady, Morgan, and Orin. The farm is located less than an hour’s drive north-east of Calgary International Airport, about 20 Miles East of Didsbury, AB on the #582 Highway. Our operation is based around livestock, grain, and custom equipment.

The cowherd currently consists of 580 breeding females. The seedstock portion makes up about 180 of this number; and is divided between two breeds; Red Angus and Polled Herefords. The commercial herd is based around non-registered Polled Hereford cows, bred to purebred Angus bulls. The commercial calf crop each year is bred to be majority F1 crossed calves.

When we started, we both had recently graduated Olds College, with diplomas in Agriculture Business and Agriculture Production. The network of people we met in Olds have proved to be lifelong friends, many in similar situations to ourselves. Both of us have been through and selected in the Cattleman’s Young Leaders program, Becky in 2013 and Travis in 2019. We have always strived to be prograsseive minded, and to push hard at what we do. Both being raised on commercial cow/calf mixed with grain operations, we had a strong background to begin within commercial cattle, but started entirely from scratch in the purebred industry. Some helpful mentors and family members along the way have been crutial pieces to the puzzle for us. Of course, the best lessons learned have also been the hardest ones.

Expanding from being solely based around the cowherd has been a source of risk management, in changing times. We began running custom equipment; balers, sprayer, floater, haybine, and trucks within the last 5 years. Grain farming is also coming into the equation in 2023, which again is an exciting step forward.

We have enjoyed getting our kids out and about to numerous junior shows and 4H events in the past couple of years. It has become a place for us to connect with other producers, to visit with good friends, and mostly; our vacations away from home. Our kids are proving to be keen enthusiasts in the cattle side of things, and we are excited to see where that takes Redline Livestock in the coming years. We didn’t get to expand upon an established purebred herd ourselves in the beginning, and we hope that is something we can offer our kids going forward, to help give them a viable future in our industry.

Raising our kids in this business is a definite bonus for us. They have countless people to look up to and learn from, and their future is bright.
