DLMS Timed Auction bidding will begin on April 3rd, 2022 at 8am. The racehorse bidding will begin on April 5th at 4pm and conclude once bidding has ended. There will be special in-person registration assistance and bull viewing available on April 5th from 1pm to 4pm at the Ranch. Sale will be held at the Ranch 2 miles NE of Pollockville, AB. How to Participate in the DLMS Farm Ga
1. Visit www.dlms.ca , scroll down sale list to find the sale you are interested in bidding on. Click on the sale listing and you will be taken to the FarmGate Timed Auction Sale page. 2. After you are at the FarmGate Timed auction site - farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time FarmGate users: - First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. (please note due to some of the text notification features the FarmGate Time Auction Site requires a new account separate account from your DLMS Live sale site) - After you create your FarmGate account you will receive a txt message with a pin code to verify your account. - On your first log in to FarmGate Timed auctions we recommend you go to your profile and confirm your notifications are set to YES. This allows the site to send you text and/or email notifications when you are out bid and if there is activity on your favorite lots. Returning FarmGate users: - If you have used Farm Gate Timed auctions in the past simply enter your user name and password to continue. After you have logged in you are able to browse the timed auctions on DLMS FarmGate Timed Auctions. 3. How to Bid Now that you are logged in and your account phone number / email is verified you are able to bid on an upcoming sale. Simply find the lot you are interested in bidding on. After you have found the lot there are 2 options for bidding on the lot. - Place Next Bid – to place the next bid on the item, you see the amount in the first box, you simply click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed. - Max Bid Amount – to place a max bid you put your max bid in the second box listed as “Max Bid” on the item, and then click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed as the next bid. With the Max Bid placed the computer will then keep you as the high bidder to the max amount you have placed. This can be a great feature if you are not able to give 100% attention to the sale close out and protect your interest so you do not miss out on any lots you want to purchase. The Max Bid amount is completely confidential from the seller during the sale process. Example of How the Max Bid Works - If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest. Please note that in some cases a lot value can change very quickly if 2 max bids are placed on the same lot competing against each other. 4. Watch List Feature If you have items in multiple auctions or only a few from the same auction that you want to watch with out having to scroll through the entire list you can add the lots to your watchlist. On each lot you will see the “eye” button beside the bid button, by clicking this “watchlist” Icon that item is added to your personal watchlist for easy viewing of just your favorite lots in this sale or on the entire site.
ate Timed Auction with Extended Bidding 5. Sale Ending / Closeout Most FarmGate Timed Auction sales close racehorse style with extended bidding. What is Racehorse Style Close? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding. How will Extended Bidding works? When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in. 6. Bidding Close & Follow-up After the clock has gone to “ENDED” and no bidding has occurred for 5 min the computer will declare the sale finished. Following the close typically within 24 hours of the sale close the sale consignor will contact all winning bidders to arrange payment, transfer of pedigrees and delivery/Pick up of your lot. Or as the winning bidding you can contact the sale consignor / sale manager to confirm payment instructions. Please make sure that your account info is up-to-date and correct if you are the winning bidder of a lot as this is how the billing is sent to Sale manager and/or Sale consignor. Using EPDs for Bull Selection EPDs are calculated using pedigree, performance and genomic data. Canadian Angus members participate in the voluntary Performance Program through which they collect and submit performance data on fertility, calving ease, growth, structure, carcass quality, and feed efficiency for their calves. A big thank you to all our members who take the time to measure and record this data; without you we cannot generate the genetic selection tools that we do. Many members have started measuring and submitting phenotypes for the new traits introduced here. As you start calving, please do not forget to record teat and udder scores on your cows. EPDs are a genetic selection tool that some producers appreciate and use to select their bulls. Canadian Angus Association Genetic Evaluation Definitions Production EPDs: Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD describes the percentage of expected unassisted births when a bull is exposed to first-time heifers. The higher the number, the higher the probability that first-time heifers bred to the bull in question will calve with no assistance. The EPD predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW) EPD describes in pounds the difference in expected progeny weight, on average. A bull with a BW EPD of +4 will, on average, sire calves that are 2 pounds heavier than a bull with a BW EPD of +2 (given equal management). Weaning Weight EPD (WW) EPD describes in pounds the difference in expected weaning weight in progeny, on average. WW EPD is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. A bull with a WW EPD of +50 will sire calves that are, on average, 20 pounds heavier at weaning than a sire with a WW EPD of +30 (given equal management). Yearling Weight EPD (YW) EPD describes in pounds the difference in expected yearling weight in progeny, on average. YW EPD is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit post weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. A bull with a YW EPD of +100 will sire calves that are, on average, 30 pounds heavier at weaning than a sire with a WW EPD of +70 (given equal management). Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) EPD describes an animal’s ability to grow post weaning on a constant amount of feed. RADG EPD, expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. A bull with an RADG EPD of +1.5 will sire calves that, on average, will grow 1 extra pound per day more than calves from another bull with an RADG EPD of 0.5—on the same amount of feed. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) EPD describes the feed intake potential for weaned calves from one sire compared to the feed intake potential of calves from another sire. This EPD is expressed in pounds per day. Weaned calves from Sire A with a DMI EPD of 0.50 will eat approximately 0.5 pounds of dry matter a day more than weaned calves from Sire B with a DMI EPD of 0.00. This EPD should also be used in conjunction with a growth EPD, such as YW EPD, as unlike RADG EPD, it does not include a growth component. Used independently of a growth EPD the DMI EPD selects solely for appetite. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) EPD describes the difference in average scrotal circumference in sons. Expressed in centimetres, a sire with an SC EPD of 1.2 will, on average, have sons with scrotal circumference that is 1 centimetre larger than the sons from a sire with an SC EPD of 0.2. SC EPD has also been correlated with daughter’s age at puberty and progeny fertility. Docility (Doc) EPD is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favourable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. Claw Set (Claw) EPD is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favourable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more functional claw set. Ideally, toes are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle (Angle) EPD is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favourable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45- degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth. Carcass EPDs: Carcass Weight (CW) EPD is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. A bull with a CW EPD of +30 will sire calves that, on average, will result in 10 pounds more hot carcass weight than the progeny of a bull with CW EPD of +20. Marbling (Marb) EPD describes the marbling potential of calves from one bull compared to the calves from another bull, given the same management. This EPD is expressed as the difference in grade score. Given the same management, the calves from a bull with a Marb EPD of 0.6 will marble ½ a grade score better than the calves from a bull with a Marb EPD of 0.1. Ribeye Area (RE) EPD describes in square inches the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness (Fat) EPD expressed in inches, describes the differences in back fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Maternal EPDs: Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers at first exposure. A higher EPD indicates a higher probability of conception. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) EPD describes the probability of not requiring assistance when a bull’s daughters calve for the first time. The higher the EPD, the higher the probability that a bull’s daughters will not require assistance at calving time. Milk EPD describes, in pounds, the portion of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. On average, daughters from a bull with a Milk EPD of +20 will contribute 5 pounds more to their calves’ weaning weight than the daughters of a bull with Milk EPD of +15. Milk EPD is a threshold trait that should be maintained at a moderate level dependent on the management and environment of the herd. Mature Weight (MW) EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Mature Height (MH) EPD expressed in inches, MH EPD is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires. Rib Fat & Rump Fat – An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th ribs, measured in inches. Rump Fat - An external measurement taken between the hooks and pins, measured in inches. The rump fat and the rib fat measurements are used to determine the overall external body fat. REA (in2) – Area of the longissimus muscle, measured in square inches. The trait is moderately to highly heritable and gives an indication of overall carcass muscling. %LMY – Cut-ability, is the percentage of lean meat yield in the carcass %IMF – Percentage of fat in the ribeye area muscle

Terms and Conditions: • All sales shall be final and binding. • .Payment of livestock sold during the sale shall be paid in full to Rebel Creek Angus prior to delivery unless otherwise arranged. • .Transfer and Registration papers will be paid by the seller, and that no costs of the same be incurred by the purchaser. • .All bulls are guaranteed to have passed a semen test preformed by a licensed veterinarian and be a sound breeder. Any bull that has not passed a semen test at the time of sale will be declared prior to sale day. These bulls will be kept at Rebel Creek Angus at no additional cost to the buyer and will not be delivered until they have past a semen test. If the bull does not pass a semen test the bull will be refunded at the request of the purchaser. Any bull who has passed the breeding evaluation is eligible to be insured and is the responsibility of the purchaser to procure insurance, and it will not be the responsibility of Rebel Creek Angus to cover any injury or negative reproductive situations that may arise. • .Rebel Creek Angus will not be liable for more than the purchase price of the bull. • .All bulls will be delivered in the week following the sale. You Can’t Manage What You Don’t Measure! Having had the opportunity to work with many diverse cow-calf operations in the southern Alberta area I get to see how these operations work from start to finish of the production cycle. As a veterinarian we of course have a strong knowledge basis in animal health. With this comes being engaged in nutrition, reproduction, and genetics. Our practice philosophy is to try and drive decisions based off of data/records to try and optimize herd performance. So having the opportunity to work with similar minded herds such as Rebel Creek Red Angus is truly satisfying and motivating for us both. There are many value add processes that we have the opportunity to use with this herd including: • Use of digital data collection for all health, performance, and reproductive metrics on Herdtrax software. This allows accurate reporting of metrics to breed associations for EPD’s and aids in management decisions. • Complete herd vaccination from birth, branding, weaning, pre-breeding, and annual cow herd vaccination. • Standardized treatment and preventative health protocols uniquely tailored to the herds operation, environment, management, and history. • Heifer palpation which allows us to select for the most fertile heifers and those with likely good calving ease. • Fixed Time Artificial Insemination which lends to improving overall herd “Reproductive Momentum” by getting as many animals calving in the first cycle as possible and the opportunity for the herd to use elite sires when breeding. This lends to improved herd fertility, longevity, more uniform calves, and better performance. • Early pregnancy diagnosis to allow staging of pregnancies at time of preg-check to know Artificial Insemination conception rates, bull performance early on, and to allow better calving time management. • Scrotal measurement of all sale bulls prior to semen test to allow weaning out of calves that may have smaller scrotals and those that may have infections that can be treated early. • Advanced genetic testing for “Genomics” which improves the accuracy of traditional EPDs as well as genetic testing for Immunity and disease prevention. • Routine herd visits allowing the opportunity to see advise on animal movement, nutrition, and other operational aspects. I truly believe that these value added processes don’t take away from the fact that these critters are ranch raised on native prairie in a manner that fits with the commercial cow-calf operations that we work with. In fact using these value added processes are really the cutting edge of how cow-calf operations will need to improve their herds to stay sustainable in the Canadian beef cattle industry. We recommend you make an informed decision which requires accurately documented data. In making your genetic selection first think of what your operation genetic goals are and the Economically Relevant Trait that corresponds with this whether it be calving ease, weaning weight, yearling weight, stayability, marbling, or otherwise. As well, select for animals that are raised in an environment and production system similar to yours so you know the genetics and animal are suited well for your operation. You have obviously made it to this article because you’re looking to advance your herd genetics. Be sure to make your most informed decision, consider some of the same value added processes in your own herd, and remember you can’t manage what you don’t measure!

Basically, indexes help producers use EPDs to balance traits. Balancing traits can be complex. Not all traits make an equal contribution to profitability, and some traits counteract each other (e.g. post-weaning growth and cow size/feed requirements). Other traits are important to a certain threshold, then there is less benefit in going any further (e.g. calving ease) or even a direct cost (e.g. milk production).

A well-constructed index can help streamline the process of selecting cattle for breeding. It is not intended to replace individual trait EPDs (which will still be available) or to tell breeders how to breed. But an index can help breeders focus on cattle that will tend to be more profitable under Canadian production systems and markets. For the commercial producer—who likely purchases bulls and thinks about EPDs on only one day of the year—it is a useful overall guide that simplifies the complexity of multiple EPDs. We are pleased to give you an introductory look at the new Canadian Balanced Index for some of your cattle and would appreciate your feedback and questions about the indexes. 120

A selection index sums EPDs for many traits to make it easier for producers to balance traits. The Canadian Balanced Index will officially be launched later on this year. The Index is designed to allow producers to continue to focus on the traits that are important in their own operations while creating a balance across all traits. The index is expressed in terms of Canadian dollars and it reflects the expected difference in profits between bulls’ progeny. For example: Bull A CBI = $250 Bull B CBI = $150 On average, progeny from Bull A will be $100 more profitable in a Canadian commercial operation than the progeny from Bull B. The Rebel Creek Angus Indexes Since the beginning of Rebel Creek Angus, I have been creating, revising, and using my own indexes to place value on certain qualities for each yearling bull and heifer. With the amount of data I have collected on each animal, I soon found it overwhelming to use the data without trying to make some sense of it. Each index, calving ease, ranch value, and feedlot value use Canadian Angus EPD rankings, as well as performance ratios that are the same from year to year and help provide a fair assessment of each animal’s EPD strength, just like the Canadian Angus Balanced Index. No decision should be made based on a single number, but what the indexes can provide, is when all of the other boxes are checked, how can a person separate perhaps the more elite, or specifically desirable traits from each other? One way to look at this would be using calving ease as an example. The bulls are all compared to each other, therefore the Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Birth Weight (BW) EPD’s which I use to determine the Calving Ease ranking, along with the birth weight ratio (the animals actual birth weight compared to the group average) is a far better way to decide if a bull should be used on a heifer rather than using actual birth weight alone. The most common question I had last year was, “how did you decide how many stars each bull gets for each of those categories?” The answer is that I use most of the available EPD’s from Canadian Angus to use in a standard weighted system for each animal, each year. Because of the use of carcass scanning and using the ANGUS GS DNA test on every animal, the accuracy of each EPD is unrivaled in the Canadian Red Angus industry. What is Ranch Value? As a commercial cattleman, I use traits that I feel have value to my commercial herd, traits like weaning weight, heifer pregnancy, milk, scrotal size, and feed efficiency are more heavily weighted. And for Feedlot Value I use yearling weight, gain, and all of the carcass epd’s more heavily.
