Northern Classic 20th Annual Charolais & Simmental Bull Sale 2023

Page 1

Welcome from Bohrson Marketing Services

The Northern Classic Bull Sale is one of the most highly anticipated auctions each spring where the JayDawn Farms and Willow Creek Simmentals programs come together as like-minded operations to raise sound, functional, real world beef bulls to put out into the industry to go and work for the cowman. The large crowd seen at this sale each year speaks volume to not only the quality of product on offer, but the type of people you get to do business with. These folks are all hard working, salt of the earth people that enjoy the cow business and all it entails. Their goals to annually raise stock to help elevate a program is very apparent and the 2023 offering is as stout in quality from front to back as ever before.

JayDawn Farms has one of the most diverse pens of bulls you will find anywhere with their red, black and fullblood Simmentals along with their Charolais division. The bulls are thick, deep, powerful bulls with great haircoats and we feel each division in their section has so many features with a few special sire groups very well represented. The embryo transplant, artificial insemination and natural walking bulls at JDF have put a great pen of bulls together for your appraisal and we truly feel it’s one of the most even set of bulls throughout they have ever brought to town. A special feat considering the sheer volume of cows this bull pen is made up.

The Klassen family of Willow Creek has one of the most loyal following of commercial producers each year and it is long bodied, big topped, thick butted bulls seen in this year’s catalogue that keep them coming back for more of these good Simmental bulls. The dedication to raising sound structured bulls that sire a set of calves that can thrive and perform in any environment is very apparent throughout this set of cattle and we know you’ll be impressed with the consistency and quality throughout their string of bulls. The popular walking bulls you have come to appreciate are well represented in this year’s offering again as well as some new bulls to offer you past customers some new, different bloodlines to use on your herd.

Both of these family operations are some of the best people in the industry to do business with. Their customer service is second to none and their ability to raise the bar of quality each year is commendable. We really hope you can be with us on sale day but encourage you to reach out to anyone from both outfits to discuss the bulls and their programs to help source your next purchases. If any of us at Bohrson Marketing can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us and utilize our free, industry leading order buying and consultation services. We would be pleased to visit with you on this great offering of bulls.

Best Regards,

The Bohrson Marketing Team Welcome

Welcome to the 2023 edition of the Northern Classic bull sale. The combined offering from these two operations is as well received by their customer base as any event I have been a part of. The total number of bulls is up slightly from 2022 and both programs will have something for every bull requirement you may have. There will be a number of calving ease pedigrees as well as a large group of bulls that will add pounds when you come to market your calves. I have said it before, and I don’t know of any sale that attracts more repeat customers than the Northern Classic does. These are two true family operations and although some of the family members may work off of the farm on a daily basis, they are all present and accounted for at the annual bull sale which is a family affair for the McQuaig and Klassen families. I encourage you to contact the consignors to discuss the bulls that will fit your herd bull needs – nobody knows the bulls as well as they do. I will have a chance to go through the bulls prior to sale day and would be happy to assist you in anyway that I can. You are all welcome to join the Klassen and McQuaig families at the Evergreen Park facility for some hospitality and to evaluate the offering of Simmental and Charolais bulls.

EPD EXPLAINATION

EPDs are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a useful tool in selection. EPD incorporate the individual animal with it’s ancestry performance. EPDs do not compare across cattle breeds. They are individual based per breed. EPDs indicate a probable variance aboce or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. The accuracy of EPDs for calendar year bull calves is generally about 20% (one out of five times) so use it cautiously. One of several selection tools.

As usual things are busy around the farm like most operations

2022 was definitely a better year than 2021 far as production goes but in our area we still lacked moisture resulting in just marginal crops. Like most operations we had to purchase a bunch of feed again to get us thru the winter, cattle prices were pretty decent early in the fall of 2022 and then dropped off making many of us wonder where this cattle market was headed. The new year hit and cattle prices jumped immensely with some record prices being seen again in the cattle industry, for those that hung on and stayed in the business I really believe we will be rewarded for all the hard work that we have been doing. After all Alberta beef remains to be some of the best beef to be had worldwide. We currently are calving out just over 250 cows this year of Red, black & Fullblood Simmentals, our Charolais herd has increased in numbers due to embryo work and thanks to BOB’s Charolais for supplying us with an excellent group of cows that met all of our expectations far as calving ease, performance, maternal and most of all excellent dispositions, so thank you Bob! We also run a group of commercial cows in which we use as receips for our embryo program and then cross breed the Simmental & Charolais genetics to give us those sought after buckskin calves that top the market.

As I wrap up this welcome message and reflect back on the years I find it hard to believe that this bull sale is our 20th annual bull sale at Evergreen Park. 20 years ago myself , Denis Cloutier and Ken Edey sat down and came up with the idea to host this annual bull sale. Of course that was the years of BSE and we wanted to get people to attend and purchase bulls from this new bull sale. Times were tough in the cattle industry let alone starting a new sale, we all had been selling bulls at consignment sales and private treaty for a number of years. But to get people to come to a new sale in uncertain times was the challenge, so we came up with the idea to offer some incentives to attract people to our sale. Free delivery in the Peace Country, we would take the bulls home and look after till people needed them and lastly but probably the biggest one was offering of the Payment Plan of ½ down sale day with the other ½ not due till November interest free. 20 years later we still offer these incentives to you our customers, these programs work well for us and we sure hope that they work for you. The basis of the sale has remained to same over the last 20 years with only one change and that was with Ken and Denis retiring from the business, we were very lucky to be able to bring on our great friends the Klassen family from the excellent program of Willow Creek Simmentals in 2010. A program that matched up very similar to ours with raising top quality cattle and supplying the industry with some of the best genetics out there to offer. So Thank you to the Klassen’s we look forward to working with you for many years to come. I would like to thank all my family, friends and neighbors who have supported us over the years to make this all possible. I also want to say Thank you to all our customers we have had over the years and look forward to continuing our service to you. We look forward to meeting new customers and showing you a program that has been in the business for many years that is in it for the long haul. The best part of being in the cattle business is truly the people you meet and the friendships that are made. Stop by the farm or give us a call, I love to talk cows and would love to show you what we have to offer. We look forward to seeing you March 10th at the Northern Classic Bull sale at Evergreen Park in Grande Prairie.

Bentley is one of the best investments we have ever made at JayDawn, this herdsire has done a fantastic job for us. He calves super easy, the calves have lots of vigor and are very consistent and grow well. The sons are super soft made with lots of thickness and rise to the top of the bull pen. The definition of a great herdsire is when the daughters come into production and that very well may be Bentleys best attribute yet as time will tell. His first daughters came into production last year and have all the makings of being great brood matrons. Excellent udders lots of milk and great little mother cows that will be around for the long haul. They weaned off their calves that weighed right up there with the mature cows. Check out this years sons as they may be the best group he sired to date. We will continue to use Bentley thru our ai program as he just plain works.

This Bentley son has been a favorite right from birth. Super stout made and sound to the ground. Soft made with a little extra frame to him along with a super hair coat. His performance numbers are right where they need to be starting out at a modest 100 lbs and weaning off at 910 lbs, he ranks in the top 1% in the breed for both weaning and yearling weights. His dam is a big broody Riddler cow that has a perfect udder and feet. The Bentley Riddler cross sure has clicked for us, check out 40K a bull that we are super proud to bring to our 20th annual bull sale.

Another Bentley Ridder mating that has been a favorite since birth. This Bentley son stems from the Heidi cow family that is known for lots of milk and excellent fertility. 103K ranks in the top 1% for weaning weight and the top 4% for yearling weights. 103K is moderate and very soft made, this bull will leave you with a super set of steers and a set of replacement females you can’t get enough of. This black baldy bull will be easy to find sale day.

We used Bentley on all of our second calvers the last two years because he calves so easy and will continue to do so again this year through ai. Here is a very eye catchy Bentley son that puts it all together. Very moderate and stout made this baldy will keep you coming back for a second look. Long and smooth made this bull has calving ease built into his pedigree with sires like High Voltage, Odin and Rampage that we have used in the heifer pen over the years with great success. These bulls have also left us with some tremendous females in the herd. This bull would work great on a set of second calving females to give you that added calving ease and calves that perform very well.

Another Bentley Riddler mating that will be easy to find sale day. This black baldy is very moderate and stout made. He stems back to the great Pepsi cow family that has done so much in the Simmental industry. Our Pepsi females all have made great mother cows bringing in the heavy weights every fall. They are super fertile and have lots of milk. He ranks in the top 4% for weaning weights and the top 10% for yearling weights. This bull will work in a variety of programs and leave the owner with an excellent set of calves.

Stout stout stout and all bull best describes 27K, he is super long made with lots of natural muscling. His dam is a young female that stems back to the Annie cow family who we have had great success in our donor program. Lots of milk, perfect udders and feet line this cow family as far back as we can trace. This bull ranks in the top 1% for weaning weights and the top 5% for yearling weights. This bull will leave you a tremendous set of calves both heifers and steers.

Here is a super long super stout made bull out of Trail Blazer. This bull is chalked full of red meat and you really appreciate him when you get in behind him. Trail Blazer a bull who is marketed by Bohrson Marketing and came from the excellent program of Johnson Ranching worked quite well in our program, although he we only ended up with a couple bulls he left us with a tremendous set of females that we are excited to put in the herd and get producing. 53K’s dam 707E is one of my favorite females in the herd. She is a heavy milker with a really nice udder, she has really good feet and is super fertile. Check out this bull in person as his picture does not do him justice. If you are looking to put some pounds on your calf crop in the fall check out 53K

This black baldy will sure to garner some attention sale day, big soggy and deep made best describes 33K. His dam is a smaller made black baldy female that is as wide as she is tall, she is a heavy milker and always brings in a top calf each year. She is out of the great Wallbanger bull and stems back to the 16X cow who we flushed with great success. 33K sire Trail Blazer was widely used and the off spring that we have seen have all been top notch. This bull ranks in the top 3% for weaning and the top 2% for yearling weights, if you are looking to increase your pay weights in the fall look to one of these Trail Blazer sons.

When Bouchard purchased Power Play we knew right away that this was bull we needed to use in our ai program. Super stout and correct made with impressive performance numbers and EPD’s, 1000 lb weaning weight ranking in the top 10% for the breed with a 1660 lb yearling weight putting him in the top 4% of the breed. He calved very well for us and gave us a very consistent set of calves, we are getting the 2nd set of calves on the ground this year. Both the bulls and heifers are performing very well and are looking the part. Check out this group of Power Play bulls on offer.

Here is a very complete bull sired by Power Play and out of a very consistent producer 505C. 505C is one of the reasons we like the Broker females so much, perfect udders and perfect feet. They are moderate made and are really consistent producers. 69K is a bull that you will find easy sale day, he is moderate, stout made with that soggy appearance to him. This bull will work well on a variety of cows.

88K is out of one of my favorite cows on the farm, 362A is a very consistent Gunner female that stems back to the great Temptress cow that walked our pastures for years. There is so much to like about this female, perfect udder perfect feet and just the right size. She never misses and is super fertile. Her sons have sold into some of the best herds around, Darren Hawkes 2017, 2021 and Fourth Creek Cattle Company in 2022. 88K is another very complete moderate made bull with a ton of hair. If you are looking for a bull that will calve easy, give you big steers and tremendous females then look to this bull to take you there.

556C is a bull making machine, she always brings in the heavy weights in the fall. She is not very big in stature but is big on production. 556C is a heavy milking female that is very consistent with the Pepsi lineage. Sons have sold to some of the best ranches around, Hale Farms 2018, Warkentin Land & Cattle 2020 and Codesa Colony in 2022. This bull is very moderate and complete made, the Power Play bulls are very consistent in their makeup. He is very correct made and has a ton of hair, he will work on a variety of cows.

Power Play is Hetero Black which means you can get some red calves even when mating two black parents. 36K is one of the deepest sided bulls in the pen, he has a ton of length to him and is very complete in his makeup. Lots of hair and style to this bull has led him to be a pen favorite throughout the winter. His dam is a smaller moderate stout made Odin female that is as complete in her makeup as one can make them. Perfect udder with lots of milk she holds her condition perfectly while raising top end calves year after year. Take a good look at this red Power Play son , he checks off a lot of the boxes for a top end herd bull.

Again another red bull out of two black parents, 81K is a stout made individual with a ton of hair. He puts it all together on a moderate frame and is very structurally correct. This red baldy will work on a wide variety of cows. His young dam has a perfect udder and excellent feet. She stems from the Minnie cow family which has been around for a long time at JayDawn, this bull has the fullblood influence on the cow side and should leave you with excellent females.

Hawkeye was a bull we had our eye on when we were on the search for a new red herdsire in the spring of 2021. We had already purchased the AIA Rampage 33H bull prior to Hawkeye so our needs were filled for a walking bull. But when Jay Robb purchased the bull we called him up and were lucky enough to get a semen pack. We have always liked the KWA Roosevelt progeny and this was a great opportunity to use this bloodlines. Hawkeye progeny are born easy and have a ton of performance to them. He left us with a very consistent set of calves in both the bull and heifer pen. Analyze these four bulls on offer and see the consistency for performance, overall depth and the ton of hair that he put on these bulls. We are very excited about the females that we have in the heifer pen as well.

This bull patterns the Hawkeye bull himself very much, super deep sided long made with that dark cherry red coloring. He is very well put together and will be easy to find in the sale pen, he has been a favourite right from birth. The mating with Wallbanger females sure clicked as the 59K bull is also out of a Wallbanger female. His dam 757E is a moderate made female with a excellent udder and really good feet. Check out this bulls EPD’s as they are right at the top as well. If you are looking at getting a bull to give you those big soggy steers or a set of excellent replacement females with a ton of hair then 76K will fit the bill.

59K is a tank of a bull, super deep, super thick with a ton of mass to him. He is very correct made and from every angle he is all bull. He has a ton of hair to him which is a Hawkeye stamp. His EPD’s scream performance with ranking in the top 3% of the breed for both weaning and yearling weights. His dam a Wallbanger female has brought bulls to this sale before and they sold to two of the best Ranches in Alberta, Sunset Simmentals in 2019 and Balisky Farms in 2021. Her calves always have a ton of middle and are super soggy made. We unfortunately lost 401B last fall, thankfully we still have the granddam 135Y and a couple daughters to carry on this lineage. This bull will have some friends sale day, if you are looking to add some performance to your calf crop and get excellent replacement females then take a look at 59K, he is a serious contender.

Talk about bull making machine, the 153Y cow stems from the Red Doll cow family that has had probably the most bulls through this very sale selling to some of the best cattle herds in Western Canada, 2014 Dan & Kerry Lange , 2017 Darren Priest & Darren Hannis, 2018 David Ziemmer, 2019 Nicklason Stock Farms, 2020 Darren Hawkes and 2022 Dale Martinson. We really wish she would give us a heifer to carry on her lineage. She has an excellent udder and excellent feet which is known for in the Red Doll cow family. 68K himself has lots of thickness to him and is long made with a ton of hair. If you are looking to keep replacements look at this bull as the cow family behind him is stellar.

68 lb birth weight , 735 lb weaning and 1100 lb yearling weight, does it get much better than that for a calving ease bull. 8K is stout and moderate made with the typical Night Hawk hair. His dam is a growing into a big broody baldy female that has a terrific udder and lots of milk. This black baldy bull has some extra chrome which he should pass onto his calves. Black baldy females are in hot demand, if you are wanting your black calves to be Simmental identifiable at the mart this Night Hawk son should do just that.

These black bulls with the extra white sure catch your eye when you walk into the bull pen. Another Night Hawk son with the extra chrome package. His dam is growing into a big broody black baldy female that also stems back to the calving ease bull Odin that we had such great success with in the heifer pen. Here is a Night Hawk son out of a female we purchased from Hoegl Livestock at Friday Night Lights sale in 2020. These calving ease bulls will give you peace of mind at calving and calves that perform well.

Another Night Hawk son with a great set of EPD’s and performance numbers for a calving ease bull. He ranks in the top 20% for Calving ease, top 40% for Birth weight, Top 25% for weaning and top 30% for yearling weight within the breed. 17K is one of the longer made Night Hawk sons that is well put together on a moderate frame. Nice head and smooth made this bull will calve easy and give you calves that perform well.

Probably the longest and tallest made bull of the Night Hawk sons on offer. 29K is very smooth and correct made he also has little more performance than some of the of Night Hawk sons and would work very well on a group of 2nd calvers or on the main cow herd. Ranks in the top 20% for calving ease and in the top 10% for weaning weight and the top 15% for yearling weights pretty impressive for a calving ease bred bull. Check out his pedigree, Night Hawk, Pepsi and Bentley, these Bentley daughters brought home some impressive calves on their first go.

Another Night Hawk son out of a Bentley first calver, we sure were happy with these Bentley females on their first go. Moderate made females with really nice udders and really good mothers. 56K is what Night Hawk known for producing, this bull has a nice tiny head and super smooth front end. He is moderate and stout made with a ton of hair. This bull will also work on 2nd calvers or the cow herd giving you peace of mind at calving and calves that perform well.

Here is a scurred bull out of our donor cow 17X a cow that we have had great success with. She has been mated several ways and everytime it just clicks. She gives us that added performance and size in our Simmentals that we really like. This flush only gave us one bull but left us with one of the strongest set of females in the keeper pen that we have ever raised. The mating with Tycoon gave us super soggy thick made animals, add in 17X to give us the frame and overall performance to this mating. 28K is just that, super soggy, super stout made and has tremendous thickness when you get behind him. He is better than his picture so you need to see him in the flesh. 17X has sold numerous sons thru this sale to some of the best cattle programs in all of Alberta. Ten Bar Cattle company 2013,2015 & 2019 ,Alberta Holdings 2016, Melburn Holdings 2020, Nicklason Stock Farm 2020, 2 Bulls to Warkentin Land & Cattle 2021, and Randy Pocket in 2021. We have daughters in production of 17X and they are impressive females. This bull will raise you top notch steers and replacement females you can’t get enough of.

Here is one of the largest framed and longest made bulls in the pen. If you are looking to increase frame size and overall performance then look to 37K. He is well put together for a bull of his size, super deep and soggy made. This red baldy will have some friends sale day and is easy to find in the pen. His red baldy dam is a moderate framed cow with a ton of middle to her. Good feet and good udders back this cow family up. This bull should add extra stretch and length to his calves which means more pounds and more dollars in your pocket come fall.

Here is a real thick made son of Tycoon, he is very moderate and soggy made. He is almost as wide as he is tall. He has a ton of hair and a super disposition. His dam is the result of our embryo program, the mating between Westcott and 16X left us with both excellent bulls and females. 41K’s dam 811F has a perfect udder she too is very moderate made with a ton of capacity. If you are looking to add thickness into your calves without sacrificing calving ease then look to 41K to get you there.

66K is probably the longest made bull in the pen, he is very smooth made with the extra frame. Extra length and frame adds up to more pounds on your calf crop. His dam stems back to the frosty cow family known for lots of milk and superior udders. This bull will calve very well and give you excellent calves.

When we planned this mating we were hoping that we were going to get a Broker female to put into the herd. The Broker females have worked very well for us, good udders, lots of milk and they always bring in some of the top calves every fall. 52K is a super deep sided , long smooth made bull with the extra frame and capacity. He will add some stretch and frame to his calves which adds up to more pounds in the fall. This bull will be easy to find sale day.

33H or Rampage as we call him around home was purchased as one of the high sellers out of the Rendezvous Farms sale in 2021. We got a call from Glenn Norton at Transcon to take a look at Rampage, he said this just maybe the red bull you are looking for. Glenn has an excellent eye for selecting herdsires as everything on the bull needs to be just right and he will tell you exactly how it is. If you are on the hunt for a herdbull and can not attend the sale I highly recommend to use Glenn for helping you select a bull. Thanks Glenn for helping us find this herdbull. Rampage is super stout and soggy made and is structurally correct with excellent feet. He is backed by excellent performance numbers and EPD’s. Rampage holds his condition very well as he is used in two breeding seasons. Rampage calved easier than expected for us, calves are born small and grow very well. Both the bulls in the pen and the heifers in the keeper pen are rising to the top of the pens. Rampage is owned jointly with our good friends from Ten Bar Cattle Co.

5K and 6K are twins, here is a super long smooth made bull that puts it all together with that herdbull look. He is super deep sided and well put together. His dam is a heavy milking Astute daughter with a tidy udder. She is moderate made and very fertile, bred right back to calve in January after having these twins. She shortens up gestations and lightens up birth weights. Rampage bulls matured very early and his daughters were cycling very early last fall. This bull will work on a variety of cows and give you calves you are proud to take to town.

Another Rampage son that is super long and smooth made, these bulls are very correct in their makeup. 24K is a dark red bull with lots of scrotal development, low birth weight of 80 lbs and a very balanced set of performance and EPD numbers. Out of 705E a moderate made daughter out of El Tigre who has a perfect udder, the 7X cow is still here at JayDawn and has a perfect udder and feet at the age of 13. Longevity and fertility backs this cow family up.

Probably one of the longest made and deepest sided bulls in the pen. 110K is super soggy made and has lots of performance to him. He will add length and stretch to his calves to give you those extra pounds at weaning. He will calve well and work on a variety of cows. We had purchased some Captain Scream semen a couple years ago and use it sparingly on some of our best cows. 20K is your typical Scream son, super stout made and full of red meat. He is moderate in stature and is very well put together. He stems from one of our top cow families at JayDawn. The Red Doll cow family is backed by excellent feet, perfect udders with lots of milk, they are very fertile and bring in some of our best calves every year. 343A has put lots of sons thru this sale selling to some top notch operations right here in the Peace country, Earl Hank 2022, Ray Shaw 2019, Ray Unrah 2018, Roger Penner 2017 and Robert McQuaig in 2016. 45K is out of the Capone bull that Ten Bar Cattle Co let us walk in the heifer pen for a couple years. The Capone bull is a very complete bull with perfect feet he has given us some excellent calves, he calves well and the calves have some extra performance to them. They are very correct made and can easily be picked out in the pen. One can not help but notice 45K as he is a tank, he is as wide as he is tall. He has a ton of middle to him and is very stout made with that dark cherry red color. His young Captain Scream dam is dark cherry red with a perfect udder. She performed very well on her first go bringing in a top calf that weighed up with some of the mature cows calves. These next two bulls have an interesting pedigree as they are both out of full fleck dams sired by the Darwin bull. We are very happy with the Darwin females they have perfect udders and tons of milk, they are moderate in stature and carry the polled gene. 75K is long made and deep sided he will mature into a tremendous herdbull. These half fleck bulls are very correct in their makeup. This bull will give you a really great set of calves that grow well without sacrificing calving ease.

It won’t take you long to find 86K in the pen, this red baldy bull catches your eye when you walk into the pen. This stout made son of Capone is super thick made and has a ton of hair. He is very complete in his makeup and is very thick when you get in behind him. He will mature into one of those herdbulls that will make the neighbors stop on the road to get a second look. His pedigree combines some of the best red and fleck genetics. He will calve good and leave you with an awesome set of calves.

Another Capone son that is very complete in his makeup, 90K is moderate in stature and is super deep sided. This pedigree behind this bull combines some of the breeds best bulls that are known for calving ease bulls that are performance based. His young Brooks dam really performed well on her first go and bred right back for a January calf in 2023. She has a beautiful udder with lots of milk. This was our first year using Reputation on our Fullbloods, he calved really well and left us with both excellent bulls and females for the replacement pen. 16K has been a pen favorite right from birth. He is moderate in stature and stout made. He is colored up just right. His dam 454B has been a stellar producer for us raising a couple high sellers that topped our sale the last two years going some extremely good cattle programs, Ten Bar Cattle Co. 2022 and Hoegel Livestock in 2021. If you are looking to add replacement females into your herd and give you awesome steer calves look to 16K to get you there. 454B gave us another heifer calf this year to put back into the herd.

Another attractive son out of Reputation and a beautiful Unlimited cow. 51K’s dam has a perfect udder with lots of milk, our Unlimited females all had perfect udders and raised some of our top calves every year. 51K is very complete made with that really nice cherry red coloring. 51K comes to you with balanced performance numbers and EPD’s, check out his milk EPD he ranks in the top 4% of the breed for milk. 70K is sired by the Treasure Island bull that we own with Corey and Lorrie Beck. This dark red cherry bull is very complete in his makeup. He is long and smooth made. This bull is out of a Gurerrero cow that stems back to the Laguna cow family that is known for their excellent feet and milking ability with perfect udders, they are very fertile cows and always bring in a top end calf. This bull has very balanced numbers and would work extremely well on a set of second calvers to give you that added calving ease for them. He may not be the biggest bull in the pen but he is very complete in his makeup.

We are bringing to you a bull with a little extra chrome, this is the only calf that we got from the Treasure Island bull with this much white but I think it stems back from the dam side. This is the youngest bull in the offering but he doesn’t give anything up to the older bulls in the pen. This bull has moderate performance and EPD numbers, check out his milk EPD if you are looking to put some milk in your replacement females then look to this bull. FOOTNOTE FOR LOTS 46 TO 55

The first ten lots of Charolais bulls are full brothers the result of a very successful flush from our 519C Fairytale cow and Nationwide. Never before have we had this much success with a flush for the consistency and quality in the offspring. 10 bull calves and 3 heifer calves born from this flush, gestation average on them was 5 days early, birth weights on the 10 bull calves averaged 85 lbs and they averaged just over 800 lbs off the cow with no creep feed. The bulls from this flush all have that herdbull look to them, and the heifer calves are fancy fancy. These bulls all have nice small heads, they moderate made with a ton of muscling to them. They all were very early maturing with great testicle development. Whether you are a purebred breeder or a commercial breeder these bulls have a lot to offer to your programs. I cataloged them in the order that they were born as I couldn’t decide which one I liked the best as it changes every time I walk thru the pen. These bulls demand some serious attention and you will have some fun sorting thru them to pick out your favorite.

Talk about a meat machine here, 22K is as wide and thick as he is tall. He is very moderate and stout made with a tremendous hair coat. This is the only bull that we got from HVA Fireball last year as the rest were heifer calves which we are very excited to get into production as they are as equally good. 22K is also out of a young DownTown female that is showing us at a early age that she can really produce. The Downtown females are a little bigger in stature and are really good mother cows with lots of milk. We have some more Fireball calves on the ground this spring and yes you guessed it he will be used again in our Ai program.

Here is a bull with a ton of performance to him. He is probably the soggiest made bull in the entire pen. He is loose hided and a deep made bull with a ton of hair. Welcome from Willow Creek Simmentals

We would like to welcome you to the 20th annual Northern Classic Bull sale! It’s hard to believe that we have been a part of 13 of them sales. We are always very thankful the Mcquaig family gave us a chance to be a part of this sale. Our program has remained focused from that very first sale in remaining committed and improving our herd and bull pen year after year. We feel things have really come a long way since that first sale and are very proud of the consistency we have put into our herd in terms of the type of cow and structural soundness we have incorporated into our program. Our cow herd consists of us calving 120 head of purebred and commercial momma cows, along with the 30 heifers we will breed this spring. We have turned our focus to red and black Simmental and slowly incorporated a few select black angus females over the past 2 years.

2022 has renewed the optimism of many in the cattle industry as many seen their feed piles grow from last year and for the most part seen the calf prices soar to new heights helping regain some traction from 2021. For us 2022 seen the start of the Ladies of the Peace female sale really take shape and the 1st annual sale being a huge success for us and the fellow consignors. We also seen some big changes on the farm as Dad retired from Atco Electric in December after 36 years of working off the farm. He is quite excited to be a “full time” farmer now. The kids on the farm now really make things a lot of fun as Hudson, Jill and Darby all love being outside on the farm and in the tractor. Mom and dad get to enjoy each others company each and every day now. Tiff and I will welcome our second child in July, another little girl. Were really starting to even out the playing field from all us boys. Kyle and Ashley continue to expand their elite quarter horse breeding herd, while still keeping a few cows around. Colt and Taylor became snow birds this winter spending the entire winter in Arizona training horses and even getting a few ready to sell in some of the elite horse sale in the US. Kale just completed his first year auto body technician by challenging his first year. We are very lucky to have all of us spending time around the farm most weekends.

Our focus has always been on structurally sound, functional cattle that are efficient and excel in foot and udder quality. We have always put a ton of priority in to the feet and udders on our cows and are very happy with where our program is and the future in terms of them quality’s. We remained committed and have not gotten wrapped up in the “new and exciting” bloodlines. Instead, we have stuck to the “tried and true” genetics that work for us creating the high producing functional cattle that excel in the commercial world, while still providing fresh genetics for our customers. Lotto was a perfect example of an older bull that come in and really changed our herd in terms of the high-quality females and top end bulls he produced. Now with the incorporation of Launch we are very excited.

This year’s bull pen is as sound structured and consistent as we have ever had. They are backed by good uddered, excellent footed cows that will prove these bulls to sire strong females while still remaining powerful enough to add weight to their calves. We have a few new sire groups this year; in the spring of 2021 we ran into some bull issues when Defender and Popeye both got injured during the first week of breeding, luckily, we have made some extremely good friends in the cattle industry that were able to help us out. We can’t thank Kyle Bidewell of Bear Creek Farms for allowing us to use RF Shaker, an exciting new bloodline you will find in this year’s offering. We also were very fortunate to have longtime friends and customers, Paul and Lori Kinnee of Ten Bar Cattle allow us to use Yellowstone, our leadoff bull from that year. We cannot thank both families enough and this just proves the type of people we get to deal with in the cattle industry. We are very proud of the pen of bulls this year and excited to get them to Evergreen Park March 10th. We always welcome anyone to the farm to view the bulls prior to the sale, and we would really like to show you the mothers of the bulls as we know how important a cow is to the production of these herdsire’s. We hope to see you March 10th in Grande Prairie at Evergreen Park.

Undoubtedly one of the feature bulls in this year’s offering and for good reason. This cherry red baldy Tycoon son is the cowboy kind that is extremely long spined, and chalk full of muscle. Everyone wants the money stripe on their calves and this guy will certainly do that while adding pounds and style that will definitely attract the cattle buyers. Tycoon is a performance-based Ai sire that we have really liked what he has brought in his first calf crop. We feel some of the best animals in the herd are these fullblood influenced animals that carry the added fleshing ability and put added pounds. His fullblood based mother is our lone Fired Up daughter in the herd, Fired Up sold many years ago to Red Willow Ranch and to this date his influence is still paying dividends as numerous high selling bulls in the highly successful bull sale trace back to him, including last years high selling black at $27,000 who was out of a direct Fired up daughter. Many top peace country cattlemen have tapped into sons off of 15Z including Scarlett Livestock, Nine Mile Ranch, Ruttan Land and Cattle, Birch Meadows Colony, Warkentin Land and Cattle and Sheldon Golnick. Buy with confidence, this guy will not disappoint. Hetero Polled, Red

Its not very often that a first calver brings in a calf of this quality. Right from the start this dark red KWA Future son has stood out, and to no surprise it is probably do to the highly producing cow family that backs him. His dam is a beautiful uddered, excellent footed cow with added frame and length and really note she weaned him off the first week of September at 910lbs. Thats impressive! A full sibling to the dam was last year’s high selling red bull going to HBRC Ridgevalley colony. The grandam, 44B has been an impressive producer with 2 of 3 sons selling surpassing the $10,000 mark, and her daughters in the herd are proving to be equally as valuable. 44B will most likely enter the donor pen this spring do to her shear production and perfect foot structure at the age of 9 with them never being touched. Red Future 5K himself is a big testicled, cherry red soggy made bull that is structurally as sound as you can make one, and stout hipped with added style. This is the kind of bull that can be used in any type of program and be trusted to make females you can build a herd around and still sire steers that will add pounds which is even more money in your pockets. This is the type of bull we strive to produce and one that we feel will be popular sale day. Hetero Polled, Non Diluter

A cherry red, homo polled calving ease bull that will be popular sale day. This is the first calf crop of KWA Future 3G and we have been super impressed with them. We bred all our red heifers back that way last spring and probably will again this year. They consistently come dark red, soggy made and still have alot of muscle for calving ease type cattle. We have found them to also be excellent footed , and structurally sound which is what we really strive for. The dark red color will follow suite as his dam is a cherry red Defender daughter, and Defender himself added the dark color to. Defender daughters are all dark red, excellent uddered but milk like crazy producing above average calves on the first crack. 16K is an ideal calving ease prospect with a modest 84lbs birthweight and crushing over 800lbs on the first week of September. Note is excellent EPD numbers as well. Non Diluter

This moderate framed Tycoon son packs a ton of capacity and body mass in a smaller package. Tycoon has shown the ability to sire progeny that are dark red, hairy and have excellent feet under them. His dam 110B raised a Sheriff son on her first try that we used in our heifer pen and they are really proving to be productive, heavy milking cows while maintaining neat and tidy udders. A perfect example is the dam of COLB 11K, one of the feature bulls in the offering. Last years son went to Keith Miller in Thorsby.

The first thing you will notice on this guy is his over abundance of hair. Heavy, thick hair coat that’s ideal for these Alberta winters! 111K is a larger framed, super wide topped bull that is structurally sound and moves out with ease. Expect this guy so sire highly productive females when you combine Lotto and Liner 56U in Yellowstone’s pedigree, arguably two of the best female producing bulls the breed has ever seen. His dam is a large framed cow that we really like, she has a nice udder and excellent feet. Her cherry red Playmaker bull calf this year is really standing out already at a young age. A maternal sister to 111K is the dam of the impressive 11K bull that will highlight the black section as one of the stoutest made Popeye sons to date.

MAF Popeye 3F is without a doubt the most consistent herdsire we have ever used. You know exactly what you will get with Popeye every time you breed a cow to him. He sires long made, extremely heavy muscled calves that are thick straight haired animals and come small for the most part but grow like crazy. Anytime we run Popeye cattle through the chute we cant help but admire the large, solid foot structure they all exemplify. He has been a definite foot improver. When it comes to the sons of Popeye, they are large testicled bulls that are extremely fertile. Last year we sold 8 sons and every son was over 40cm but more impressively EVERY son tested over 90% on there semen test. Popeye himself is an absolute breeding machine. He services probably 90-95% of his cows in the first cycle and we have seen him settle up to 7 cows in the same day. Its starting to really show in his daughters as also in the past 2 years 90% of his daughters have calved first cycle and we have already noticed multiple daughters cycling already. Originally off the start we thought Popeye might be more of a “Bull” producer; that really changed after his first daughters got into production and they all raised above average calves on there first try. Some of our best calves this spring already are out of Popeye daughters. Popeye sons have been extremely well received the past 2 years with many entering top commercial and purebred outfits.

A year ago a trio of ¾ sibs passed through the Northern Classic sale ring creating as much attention as any bulls we have ever sold. Them 3 brothers averaged just shy of $14,000. Well if you missed out then, todays your lucky day, we have another brother that fits the mold so much like the 3 last year. Some top cattlemen say they think Black Rifle is our most impressive Popeye son to date. Black Rifle 33K has been a stud right from day 1, the amount of muscle and overall thickness is what really sets him apart. Black rifle does so many things right in terms of his skeletal design, athleticism, impeccable foot and leg structure, the length of spine but yet he is soft made and loose hided for a bull with so much muscle. He has a thick straight hair coat which made him a dream to get ready for the 2023 Peace Country Beef congress where he was the talk of the barn’s and unanimously was named Cattleman’s Choice bull in front of a panel of 5 of the region’s best ranchers. Maybe the best part of Black Rifle is the beautiful mother cow he is backed by. 33G is a cow that is really hard to fault, potentially the best uddered cow in our herd (which really says something), she is about as good footed as you can make a cow and is a descendant of the Red Gal cow family that has produced more top bulls then any cow family we have ever had. I would highly encourage you to stop by the farm to view her and Black Rifles full brother, they are farm favorites. Popeye has been so consistent when it comes to producing big testicled, heavy muscled bulls that are sound structured and highly fertile. We truly believe Black Rifle is better then Popeye himself and one that has so much to offer to the Simmental breed. Homo

One of the really intriguing bulls in this year’s offering. Just a mid February born Popeye son that is stamped very similar to the PCBC champion Black Rifle bull. 11K is a really calm, docile bull that is loaded with style and has the big ole Popeye hip. Like 33K we really admire the skull on him, they just have that herdbull look. EPD wise 11K shows above average calving ease, something that Popeye has done extremely well for us is his ability to reduce birthweight and increase weaning and yearling weights. Tracing back to Sheriff adds even more calving ease to this guy. His red dam is a really good footed, moderate made cow that milks really hard for how small her udder is. She produced a really nice Capone bull 2 years ago going to Melburn Holdings. This entire Jenny cow family is showing high quality feet on all progeny. My prediction is by sale day this guy will be one of the most impressive bulls in the barn with how he looks now at 11months of age. Big time herd bull here that has a ton of future and predictability.

Dam - MMWK Red Gal 33G

We feel this is a Popeye son that could be a very good calving ease option for someone with big heifers or even just on young cows. This is the 3rd full sib in a row with the biggest coming at 87lbs, that is also the biggest calf this cow has ever had. This cross has been very good between Popeye and 618D; this past fall at the inaugural Ladies of the Peace female sale, the leadoff black heifer was his full sister selling to Mader Ranches. 618K himself is a very good footed bull that is moderate in his make up with a nice small head and lots of extension in his front third to provide excellent calving ease. Homo Polled Hetero Black

This would be a bit of a younger bull that is mothered by a gorgeous Lotto daughter that is as close to ideal as we want. Picture perfect udder, awesome feet and a ton of capacity. If you are in the market for a bull that will leave an exceptional set of females i recommend keeping a close eye on this guy. He may be a little smaller then some of his pen mates but will certainly pay dividends for his new owner in the females he will leave.

This is an extremely heavy muscled bull that comes from Kyle and Ashleys program. Without a doubt hes the most docile bull in the entire offering which made picturing him difficult but for family run operations he’s a no worry bull. Another younger birthdate bull that has certainly kept up to the pack. If your looking for a foot improving bull there is no questions this is the bull for you. Kyle and Ashley walk his full brother and he is honestly one of the very best footed bulls ive ever seen , and his dam just calved here again a few days ago and she herself at 10 years of age is still flawless in her foot structure and her udder is near perfect still. This is a female making bull that is packed full of muscle!

There is so much similarity between this guy and his sire. 23K is so impressively wide based, and wide across the top, while also being probably the longest spined bull in the pen. Muscle and length that will certainly add pounds to his calf crop. If you have big middled angus based cows this bull is ideal for you. Backed by a moderate made, big barreled Ambassador daughter that sure can milk. Backed by the 24A cow family that come from the good Maxwell program and is a cow that has been one of the best female producing cows in our herd over the past few years. It would take long to find this guy sale day!Homo

113K is definitely a farm favorite. The lone red baldy Popeye son that has the patented Popeye butt. Really take note at the age on this bull, he’s one of the youngest in the pen yet has kept up with the January bulls. We wish we had a full pen of red bulls like this, super stout, big middled and excellent footed; just what the cowboys want. His dam is one of the best red baldy cows on the farm, being a direct Element daughter gives that shot of fullblood influence that crossed so well on these reds. Udder and foot quality run strong in this cow family. His picture says it all, come sale day I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s one of the very best bulls in the pen.

Dam - MMWK Red Grace 113D

Without a doubt the big time power bull in the pen this year. Strut 901K is a large framed, super long made bull that is deep made right back through his flank yet he’s still very attractive through his front 1/3. From an early age he has shown added size and performance. You will notice he has a larger birthweight, a lot of this is due to his high powered recip dam that has consistently mothered added birthweight, something we never paid much attention to till after Strut was born, but we do believe it adds some BW to him compared to what the rest of the flush and pedigree predicts. This was a very successful flush producing 2 bulls and 5 heifers that have really rose to the top of the calf crop. We sold a flush mate sister at the 1st annual Ladies of the Peace sale where she commanded $9000 to Circle G Simmentals at Lacombe. Strut like his sire Structure will sire scale crushing steers with added performance and females that will improve anyone’s herd. We like him a lot and so do fellow top Peace area Cattlemen as he was slapped Reserve Champion Cattlemen’s Choice bull at the PCBC and a member of the champion Pen of 3 bulls. It won’t take long to find this friendly well-mannered bull sale day.. Homo

Powerfully constructed Structure son backed by one of the very best cows to walk the pastures of Willow Creek. Linnette 101C is an ideal female in our minds as she is a good sized, massive ribbed cow that has really big solid feet and an impeccable udder. Her production record speaks for itself as she mothered last years featured “bubble butt’ herdsire that sold for $10,500 to Mitchell Cattle co in Barriere BC. Another son to Dallas Frank and she also has three daughters in the herd, 2 of which raised the biggest and the other the best Popeye heifer calf in the calf crop this past fall. Like their mother the udder quality along with high milking ability is second to none with all three being perfect footed. As for 101K himself you add in the high maternal traits in Structure and he himself is going to be a female producing machine that you will not want to let any go. Like the other Structure’s, 101K isn’t just a one trick pony, he’s got the added frame and bone size matched in with his soggy middle third to really add some weight to your bottom line. 101K was part of the Champion pen of 3 bulls at the PCBC this January. His picture does not do him any justice at all but there is not much guess work here when he’s backed by one of the best cow families in the Simmental breed.

Flushmate to 901K & 336K Dam - Linette 101C

This is the flush mate to Strut 901K! Power Up comes as a more moderate framed, soggy made type bull compared to his brother but maintains the same excellent foot and maternal quality’s from this entire flush. We absolutely love the heavy haircoat this guy has along with his proud presence that adds a lot of style when you really analyze him. 5 of the 7 flushmate’s come with the highly coveted money stripe, so we feel it could be a dominant gene in these brothers. The donor dam of these guys is a super rare direct HC Powerdrive bull that really do make some of the best cows. A maternal sister by Popeye might be our very favorite first calver this year. Hetero Polled Homo Black

This is a bull that gets better and better each day and one that will be attractive come sale day. 62K carries a little more frame for the Shaker sire group. He is a big testicled, excellent footed bull that goes back to a real productive cow. His dam has been known here for raising some of the heaviest weaning bulls over the years including one at 1035lbs going to HBRC Farming. She also has sons to Warkentin Land and Cattle, Moore Ranch, and Ken Stark. Even at 10 years of age 62A has maintained excellent feet and a good udder.

A classic Shaker son that is massive ribbed and full of volume. 220K is a moderate framed bull that has a ton of hair, a proud presence to him and masculine in his make up. Hes out of a good producing Meadow Acres cow that has been producing some very good bulls over the years. Sons have went to Randy Pockett, Gary Smith in Fort Vermillion and Neil Vance. Shaker calved extremely easy for us and we feel 220K will do the same if you have a group of young cows.

Definitely a favorite in the Shaker sire group. Moderate in his make up but explosive in his muscle shape and rib capacity. This excellent footed has been the stoutest made Shaker son right from the start and continues to be that way. Shaker has added some style and presence to his progeny and we feel they are a sire group that will make excellent females. The mother of 315K has been a bull producing machine as she has only ever given us one female and sent bulls to some very good cattlemen in the Peace with sons at Mike and Fern Ochrans, Eldred Ratzlaff, HBRC Ridgevalley Farming and Alan Landaker. His picture says it all and one that will definitely have a bunch of friends sale day.

This would be the largest framed of the Shaker sire group and one we sure like a lot. Probably the biggest reason he is such a favorite for us is his absolutely awesome mother. She is without a doubt one of the best cows on the farm, a large framed, big volumed cow with just a gorgeous udder on her. We just calved out her first daughter and like her dam, has one of the most perfect udders. She is a daughter of our Liner 56U donor who we wil be doing one last flush on this spring at 13 years of age and she is still probably our best footed cow with them never being touched. 17K is a bull that is going to sire some extremely good daughters. Keep every single one as they are going to be superstars. If they are anything like there sire they will be big, hairy and super attractive in their makeup. He will go down as a superior female maker!!

Dam - Lisa 17G

29K is the youngest bull in this years offering but that hasn’t slowed him down. He will just barely be year old by sale day but if you look at his adjusted weights he fits in right with the rest of the pack. He is mothered by a really good Captain Morgan cow that goes back to the MRL donor that produced so well for us. We have two flush mate sisters, his dam and one other, the sister raised our lead off heifer calf in the Ladies of the Peace female sale topping out at $9000. His dam 29G is a high producer as last year as a first calver she raised at 900lbs Cobra son that later on sold to the Knickle Family at Beaverlodge. Being sired by Protocol he could have some potential to work in the heifer pen but will certainly add some calving ease while maintaining exceptional maternal qualities.

The lone Protocol son in the sale that very long made with a really thick straight haircoat. Mothered by a very tanky first calf Sheriff daughter that is an ideal body type. She is a super easy doing cow and we feel that added to making this guy’s birthweight a little heavier as she’s always so fat, and feel 7K will calve easier then his BW shows. 7K is one of the youngest bulls in the pen and has good growth numbers to show for it; his adjusted weights show it. Also really note the excellent EPD profile on him. He goes back to the highly productive 44B cow that raises some of the best year after year.

A nice Big Cobra son with a little more frame and a ton of hair. Big Cobra really added frame and length to his calf crop. He was predominately used in the commercial herd but still bred a few purebreds who needed frame added. The more we viewed 70K in the picture pen the more and more we liked him. A maternal sister is one of our best milking Ambassador daughters who raises a top calf year after year.

This is a very impressive Yellowstone son. Yellowstone was the leadoff bull 2 years ago selling to the great people at Ten Bar Cattle Co, and when we got into bull trouble that spring they were quick to allow us to use Yellowstone and are we sure thankful! We only have a few bulls off him and they are both without a doubt the heaviest haired bulls in the pen, have added frame and are super soft in there make up. 35K is an easy doing, soft made bull that is really stout made and wide topped. His Ambassador dam is one of the heaviest milking cows on the farm but yet still has a very neat and tidy udder.

What a tank of a bull. His picture definitely does not do him justice and he’s one you will want to find sale day. 96K is the only direct Proclamation son this year and offers some superior growth for being off a first calf heifer. His dam is one of our very favorite young Lotto daughters who is already proving to be a superb producer as she weaned 96K off at nearly 900lbs and already has maybe the best Popeye heifer calf of the year so far. 96K is an early maturing, real masculine type of bull that has had large testicles from an early age. He was the third member along with the “BIG 2” Structure sons that claimed the Champion Pen of 3 bulls at the Peace Country Beef Congress earlier this month. Extremely docile and was super easy to halter break. Take the time to look up 96Ks EPD profile as he ranks above average in every category. As i mentioned earlier it won’t be hard to find him sale day, this guys all BULL!!
