Each human life should operate according to a sound plan that helps produce good results. Every individual can experience a purposeful life if plans are in place for the side effects from diflucan hoped-for outcomes. appointment as something they eagerly anticipate; people actually avoid such experiences as much as they can. Yet, by what is done or not done ahead of time, frustrations come, disappointments often emerge, becoming an unwelcome reality to be confronted and dealt with in the best possible fashion!
The fact that disappointments always occur in a person’s earthly trajectory should not give anyone the excuse for inaction with respect to them.
Some may be avoided ahead of time, while all can be dealt with cre-
atively once they invade one’s human experience. A mere acceptance of the inevitable unpleasantness is no sign of strength but of weakness, since obstacles most often can be overcome. There are resources which God makes available and which human intelligence can utilize!
Someone has wisely stated that much that life sometimes forces on us as an unpleasant surprise, is there either to change us for the better, or for us to change it with carefully secured means to overcome the undesirable situation
FAITH
By: Rick Boxx
While attending a national conference some years ago, I enjoyed listening to a variety of excellent keynote speakers. Some of them, however, seemed particularly memorable. I wondered what had made them stand out in my mind. I knew it was not just their levels of expertise. Then I realized the business owners who shared their personal stories were the ones that had impressed me the most.
These were not professional speakers, but rather, entrepreneurs who are making a difference. Some are having an impact on the world through their products or services; others are changing their communities and the world through their generosity. Their information was excellent, but their stories – accounts on what is happening through their enterprises –were what touched the hearts of people in the audience.
As I scanned the meeting room, it occurred to me that many of the leaders
we encounter. Nothing should be allowed to paralyze us in our trajectory toward something better in life!
Every challenge demands a corresponding action! Some problems may arise due to our own poor choices, while others affect us adversely on account of somebody else’s human error, or evil intent. In any case, we should not focus on the barriers represented by any disappointing experiences, but lift our gaze above and beyond them where new paths open up for our continued adventure!
To Have an Impact, Tell your Story
in attendance were becoming highly motivated through the stories they heard. I suspected that the following year, there would likely be a fresh crop of stories to be told, including some from those who were being inspired.
Why are stories so effective? One reason is that they provide a picture, what you might call a “verbal image,” of the principles and practices we are trying to convey. It is one thing to have strong enthusiasm for a product, service or even ideas. But it is better to show – through the power of stories – why they are important. Stories create images in our minds, giving flesh and bones to otherwise intangible concepts.
This story-telling strategy is hardly new. Even the Bible, written thousands of years ago, uses stories extensively to communicate its timeless truths. In fact, one passage says, “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story” (Psalm 107:1-2).
When Jesus Christ was conducting His earthly ministry, He recognized the impact of stories. Why do you think that of all His teachings included in the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, what many of us remember most are His stories, which He also called parables? For instance, even in today’s increasingly secularized world, we often hear references to “the good Samaritan,” recounted in the 10th chapter of Luke.
The biblical account is about a Jewish man beaten up along a highway by robbers and left to die. Two religious leaders saw him, but rather than stopping to assist, they moved to the other side of the road and passed him by. It was a Samaritan, a race of people hated by Jews, who stopped to help, not only binding the injured man’s wounds but also paying for a place where he could rest and recuperate.
To this day, we often hear news reports about some “good Samaritan” who selflessly – maybe even sacrificially – stops to provide aid for someone in desperate need. Jesus used this story to illustrate what He called the two greatest commandments, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Luke 10:27).
At the end of the story, Jesus asked, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” (Luke 10:36). He presented many other memorable parables, but we can see the enduring power of stories from this single example. What can we learn from this? It is simple: If you desire to inspire others to even greater heights, share your story.

The Kids Don’t Want Anything
You might as well throw that credenza from your mom, and every piece of china and crystal you own or inherited in the trash. They’re even worthless online. Don’t be surprised if your kids don’t want one stick of furniture, either.
The next generation has a completely different take on lifestyle. No fuss, no muss. Zero tolerance for elaborate preparations, even for company or family dinners.
My parents were party animals, so Mom had service for 24. I thought that was a lot. But Joan River’s daughter Melissa told me in an interview that her famous late mother “never met a set if dishes she didn’t like.”
Remember when brides would choose china and crystal patterns for wedding gifts? It was even a “Sex in the City” plotline when Charlotte York got engaged to
“Trey.”
Those days are long gone. I even gave my Lenox to a thrift store before we moved here 23 years ago. I knew I wouldn’t need them. I never did.
Paper plates and plastic are the new normal now for informal entertaining. I’m not sure what they do for Thanksgiving.
So, place settings the kids inherit will just end up in boxes in their basement or a storage unit.
Your furniture is probably not their style, even if they have room for it. And it wouldn’t pay to schlep it back north in a UHaul, either.
Ever wonder why there’s so many used furniture stores here? Your castoff furniture is consigned to consignment.
When you downsize, plan to sell your place furnished.

Strength Through Accountability
More often than we would like, we hear sad, sometimes scandalous stories of prominent leaders found guilty of moral or ethical wrongdoing. Someone who built a strong reputation and earned the respect and admiration within their profession seeing it all suddenly destroyed when misdeeds came to light.
How could this happen? We wonder and shake our heads, perhaps thinking about the mournful words of Israel’s future king David,“How the mighty have fallen” (2 Samuel 1:19), upon learning of King Saul and his son, Jonathan, dying on the field of battle. Other questions might arise in our minds when we hear about a leader’s epic fail: Could it have been avoided? Were there any early signs that this individual’s career was taking a devastating turn?
The Scriptures give many warnings that such things can happen. For instance, 1 Corinthians 10:12 cautions, “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” Proverbs 4:23 warns, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Pages of the Bible cite many people who started well walking with God but somewhere along the way got caught up in areas of sin, with terrible consequences. Ironically, one of them was King David, whom 2 Samuel 11 tells us not only committed adultery but also directed that a loyal officer, Uriah, be killed to cover up his wrongdoing. Since all of us are imperfect, does that mean such failures are inevitable?
One preventative measure would be to establish an accountability relationship with one or more people you trust and know would be honest with you. For it to work effectively you need to be willing to tell them,
‘You can ask me any question – about any area of my life.’ The purpose of this is not for them to catch you in failure, but to enable you to succeed in doing the things you want to do and warn you if they sense you are heading in a wrong direction. Here are some helpful principles from the Bible:
We can keep one another sharp. We benefit from “constructive friction” in rubbing up against one another in the process of caring accountability relationships, seeking the best for each other. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).
We can find strength in numbers. In isolation we can rationalize or even deceive ourselves into doing things we know are wrong or unwise. “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their work; if one falls down, his friend can help him up…” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).
We all need encouragement. It is in times of discouragement that we can become most vulnerable to temptation. People who encourage us can remind us of the hope we have in the Lord. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as is the habit of some, but let us encourage one another…” (Hebrews 10:24-25).
We can confide in trusted people when we fail. FAU Receives $11.5 Million Gift To Combat Life-Threatening Illness
Currently, there is no cure for amyloidosis, a life-threatening disease that can be present throughout the body, including the heart, kidneys, liver and brain. The most common localized form of amyloidosis, which is seen significantly more often, is in the brain. Cerebral amyloidosis, when symptomatic, usually manifests in one of two ways: in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and in brain bleeds, which have consequences such as a stroke.
Because amyloidosis does not affect a specific organ, unraveling the underlying cause of amyloid fibril creation – a hallmark of this disease – is complex and challenging.
A monumental $11.5 million gift from Boca Raton philanthropists Ann and John Wood of the FairfaxWood Scholarship Foundation, will enable Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine to create a game-changing infrastructure that will combat amyloidosis using a collaborative, whole-body approach.
This transformational gift will establish the FairfaxWood Health & Innovation Technology Initiative, which will focus on the FAU Amyloidosis Project. The initiative will be built on a collaboration model comprising clinicians, researchers and world-class institutes. The multi-disciplinary team will work collectively to uncover the root causes of the formation of amyloid fibrils throughout the body, including the brain, which can be difficult to treat.
Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge data science, the initiative will de-silo single organ-focused researchers and clinicians who will conduct research to seek treatments and ultimately find a cure for amyloidosis. In the distant horizon, the unique infrastructure created through this initiative could evolve into a permanent research resource to provide opportunities for vital work
on other devastating illnesses.
“We are eternally grateful to Ann and John Wood for their vision, generosity and continued support of our medical school through this extraordinary gift,” said FAU President Stacy Volnick.
“The FairfaxWood Health & Innovation Technology Initiative will transform the way our researchers and clinicians study and treat amyloidosis and other serious medical conditions that require a synergistic approach to improve health and quality of life.”
The $11.5 million gift from the Wood family marks their fourth contribution to FAU’s College of Medicine and follows a $28 million scholarship gift in 2022, in memory of their son Robert A. Wood, to support medical education and to create the opportunity for debt-free tuition for aspiring physicians.
“Philanthropy has an increasingly important role in advancing science and supporting vital research initiatives that have implications for people not just locally but across the globe, especially when it involves an illness or condition that is complex, multifactorial and difficult to treat,” said Ann and John Wood.
“Amyloidosis in particular, is a disease that has personally impacted our family, and why we decided to invest in this initiative to usher in
a new era to treat this disease, hopefully find a cure, and most importantly, provide patients with hope.”
An integral component of the current Wood gift is the establishment of the inaugural, endowed “FairfaxWood Chair of Clinical Neurosciences,” who will direct “discovery to cure” initiatives for amyloidosis, and in the future, other identified complex and severe disorders.
Michael R. Dobbs, M.D., has been named the inaugural chair to oversee research, faculty and programs within the medical school’s newly created Clinical Neurosciences Department. As endowed chair, he will spearhead external outreach to build collaborations to identify leaders across the amyloidosis and related diseases spectrum.
“I am both honored and excited to have been selected as the first endowed FairfaxWood Chair of Clinical Neurosciences,” said Dobbs. “As chair, I will work with a team of esteemed researchers and clinicians to gain a deeper understanding of the cause of amyloid fibril creation and how to prevent this amyloid buildup using medical mediations and discovering a means to dissolve existing amyloid fibril deposits.”
Dobbs, an expert in vascular neurology, served most recently as professor and chair of neurology and vice dean of clinical affairs
at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine, where he also served as chief medical officer of their clinical enterprise. Prior to UTRGV, Dobbs served most recently as associate dean of statewide and clinical initiatives at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and as associate chief medical officer of UK HealthCare, where he led the hospital to become one of the busiest stroke centers in the U.S. while also building a 34 hospital Stroke Network that continues to grow and bring life-saving treatments to underserved regions in Appalachia. Dobbs also has been an institutional principal investigator on multiple clinical trials and has published numerous original research in stroke outcomes and other topics.
“The unique infrastructure that we are establishing will help us to learn about brain amyloid and shared attributes in other organs affected by amyloidosis,” said Julie G. Pilitsis, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon, researcher and dean and vice president for medical affairs, FAU College of Medicine. “To accomplish this, we will ensure that the best minds working on the brain collaborate with the best minds working on other organ systems. Through the FAU Amyloidosis Project, we will utilize innovative technologies such as imaging and nanotechnology, leverage medical research databases, employ burgeoning AI tools, and, importantly, share this information broadly.”
John and Ann Wood relocated to Boca Raton in 1983 having spent 18 years in the prestressed concrete business, building bridges, piers and cruise ship terminals throughout the Caribbean. They continued to operate the firm from Boca Raton until its sale in 2005. John is a United States Navy veteran and an engineering graduate of NYU, while Ann was a British citizen, raised in Trinidad and medically trained in London, England.

Have a lump or bump on your foot? Whether it’s painful or not, it could potentially signal a serious condition. Foot and ankle surgeons warn it’s important to have it checked out, no matter its size or location on your foot.
“Whether your bump or lump is peasized or golf ball-sized, it should not go ignored. A proper diagnosis is key to proper treatment,” says Michael Coyer, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).
According to ACFAS, here’s what to know about some of the more common types of lumps found in the foot:
Ganglionic Cysts
This soft, fluid-filled sac is a non-cancerous bump that experts believe may arise from single or repetitive trauma. A ganglionic cyst can be caused by a leaking of jelly-like fluid from the “capsule” surrounding a joint or tendon and may be located on the top of the foot, near an ankle joint or even on the side of the foot. While the lump itself is often the only symptom experienced, you may feel tingling or burning if it’s touching a nerve, or a dull ache if it’s pressing against a tendon or joint. Often, ganglionic cysts
Have a Bump on Your Foot? Don’t Ignore It
cause irritation, making it difficult to wear shoes. Such cysts generally will not go away on their own and may return, even after being drained. Surgical removal by a foot and ankle surgeon can help prevent recurrence. However, if the cyst is not causing pain and doesn’t interfere with walking, your surgeon may simply monitor it over time.
Plantar Fibromas
Plantar fibromas are benign, fibrous, hard nodules found within the ligament of the foot and are especially common in the arch area on the bottom of the foot. These bumps tend to be less than an inch in diameter but can get larger over time. They can cause pain when shoes push against them or when
you’re walking or standing barefoot. Steroid injections, physical therapy or orthotic devices may help relieve associated discomfort but will not make the fibroma disappear. While surgical removal is an option if pain persists following nonsurgical approaches, it’s important to know that recurrence can occur post-surgery, as can complications, such as a flattening of the arch or the development of hammertoes.
Haglund’s Deformity
Haglund’s deformity, sometimes called a “pump bump,” is a bony enlargement on the back of the heel. When it rubs against shoes -- from high-heeled pumps to running shoes -- the soft tissue near the Achil-
les tendon can become irritated. This often leads to painful bursitis, an inflammation of the fluid-filled sac between the tendon and bone. While certain foot structures are more prone to Haglund’s deformity, you can treat the condition and help prevent recurrence with appropriate footwear, arch supports, orthotic devices and stretching exercises. Physical therapy, icing and NSAIDs can also reduce inflammation.
Sometimes, Dr. Coyer notes, a bump is suspected of being cancerous. In this case, your foot and ankle surgeon will perform a biopsy and if it is indeed cancer, will perform surgery to remove the mass, working in tandem with an oncologist for cancer treatment.
For more information on foot bumps or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeon’s patient education website.
“Remember, the sooner we’re able to properly evaluate your bump, the sooner you can have peace of mind and move forward with treatment,” says Dr. Coyer.
Spring Cleaning: Don’t Toss That ‘Junk,’ It May Be Valuable!
It’s time to hit the garage, basement, attic and closets for that age-old task of spring cleaning! Before hauling unwanted possessions to the curb, you may be surprised to learn they might be valuable -- especially if you have sports cards and memorabilia gathering dust.
With prices of sports cards rising in recent years, take time to determine if yours are valuable and how to best sell them.
“Older sports cards and memorabilia aren’t just highly collectible; they can be worth lots of money. Recent sales of scarce vintage cards have topped anywhere from thousands of dollars to tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands. And really rare cards can go higher,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that helps families identify and sell valuable items.
Crisafulli has assisted people in selling such keepsakes as a grandparent’s autograph collection and an uncle’s childhood baseball cards, for tens of thousands of dollars. In one life-changing event, he helped a family determine that a baseball bat that spent decades protecting their home was used by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig -- and Love of the Game Auctions sold it for almost half a million dol-
lars. Today, that bat could bring more than a million dollars.
The key is understanding what makes old sports collectibles valuable. To help, Crisafulli is sharing some tips: Older is Usually Pricier
Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be worth a lot of money, especially those depicting stars. Do you have cards of Hall of Famers, such as Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner or Ty Cobb? Even nonstars from the early days of a sport can be worth big bucks, especially if the cards have no creases and retain sharp corners and original gloss.
If you have very old cards from the 1880s through the 1930s, look for tobacco, gum and
candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Goudey or American Caramel.
If you want to sell sports items for the most money, consider a specialty auction, such as Love of the Game, which has the expertise to properly research sports ephemera and maintains bidder lists of collectors specializing in sports. More information is available at loveofthegameauctions. com.
Postcards and Photographs
We all have keepsakes of vacation destinations, but most aren’t valuable. However, photographs and postcards depicting sports stars and ballparks can be significant. Look for early “real photo” postcards from the 1900s through the 1940s, which are photographs printed on postcard backs.
As with sports cards, star power matters, so preserve those Babe Ruths as opposed to images of your great grandma’s baby cousin once-removed. And when it comes to photos, look for old markings on the back, such as photographer, publication and date stamps.
Memorabilia
Set aside old advertising posters depicting sports stars and food, tobacco or sporting goods brands. Ads from magazines aren’t valuable, but those used as store displays and for other marketing purposes can be pricey. Tin signs from the 1960 and earlier can be highly prized, but reproductions aren’t.
Your family’s sporting goods, such as balls, gloves and bats, can be valuable. Pre-1950s uniforms and catcher’s masks, helmets and other equipment are highly collected, especially when endorsed by star players. Top condition brings the highest prices, but even used equipment can be valuable.
“The golden rule is the older the sports card or item, the more valuable it usually is. Pre-1975 pieces start to get interesting and are worth researching,” says Crisafulli.
Don’t just clean out your “junk” this spring, examine it closely to potentialy maximize its value.

Lynn Alumna Steph Roach leverages adversity to stay driven
After facing life-changing health battles throughout her life, Lynn University alumna Steph Roach ’12 inspires people to confront their challenges, defy expectations and achieve goals they did not think were possible.
Roach, a 33-year-old currently living in Scottsdale, Arizona, was diagnosed with the muscular disorder Cerebral Palsy (CP) shortly after birth. Her parents were told she could never speak, read or write. Instead of allowing the lifelong diagnosis to hold her back, Roach nurtured positive thinking, hard work and persistence to establish ambitious goals.
At Lynn, Roach not only overcame challenges but excelled, “I will always be grateful to Lynn,” said Roach. “The university helped me develop social skills, confidence and advocacy!” While pursuing her bachelor’s degree, Roach found lifelong friends, empowering mentors and fell in love with student activities. She was a member of the Tri Sigma sorority, the student government board and would host events for disability awareness.
In 2016, Roach was diagnosed with a second health disorder, stage 3B Hodgkin lymphoma. Roach kept a positive mindset throughout her treatment to help deal with the setback and push through. Fortunately, Roach defeated cancer in a matter of months after beginning treatment, completing what she called the “longest workout of my life.”
By leveraging her education from Lynn and putting her life experiences to practice, Roach embarked on a mission
to influence and help others in similar situations. This led her to create “Staying Driven,” an affordable and accessible online fitness experience for participants
to a bicycle than a wheelchair—with a finishing time of four hours, 34 minutes and 16 seconds. After the challenging marathon, Roach started validating herself
ve.com.
Beyond her fitness accomplishments, Roach wrote her first book, Driven: How adversity helped me find my greatest potential. Her husband, Ty, wrote the forward for the challenging project, which took Roach over two years to complete. “The writing process was emotionally cathartic,”said Roach. “I had to be vulnerable and write about experiences I didn’t necessarily want to think about.”
Roach is now working on a children’s book inspired by Colbie, a young girl with CP who views Roach as her role model. Roach believes the book will help fill a gap in representation and open the door for younger audiences to have accessibility.
to enjoy from the comfort of their homes. The program uses coaching and a supportive community to help users regardless of age, location or skill level. The program allows her to influence societal perceptions of what it means to have a physical disability, showing that anyone can be included in the fitness industry.
The mindset that anyone and everyone can be an athlete truly hit home for Roach when she completed her first marathon in a handcycle—a three-wheeled device that bears more resemblance
as a competitive athlete, which eventually led to her nickname, The Hammer.
Before her marriage to Tyler (Ty) Roach, Steph Hammerman attended a CrossFit competition. During the event, a friend endearingly introduced her as “The Hammer,” and the nickname stuck. Since then, she has appeared in several fitness competitions and became the first CrossFit Level 2 Coach with CP and the first adaptive athlete to be signed by Nike Training in 2018. Roach also offers fitness classes through Zoom at stayingdrivenli-
Through her handle, @StephTheHammer, Roach shares her story across social media channels to continue motivating and challenging individuals. And as for Lynn students looking to follow in her footsteps and market themselves on social media, Roach offers sound advice, “I’m always going against the grain on social media,” said Roach. “It’s important to stay true to yourself because people will easily pick up when you are authentic and when you are not.”
The trials and tribulations of everyday life have taught Roach never to give up or give in, in the face of adversity. “Life will never be easy,” said Roach. “But if it were, you wouldn’t appreciate the good days.”

FAU Poll Suggests Florida Republicans Steadfast in Commitment to Trump
New insights into the political landscape of Florida show the unwavering commitment of Florida Republicans to former U.S. President Donald Trump despite the official presidential bid of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, according to a new Florida Atlantic University Mainstreet PolCom Lab poll.
Although DeSantis and Trump enjoy significant popularity among Floridians, Trump maintains a formidable 20 percent lead over DeSantis among statewide GOP primary voters, with Trump capturing the support of 50 percent of Republican voters compared to DeSantis’ 30 percent.
“The poll highlights Donald Trump’s quite durable support. He does especially well with white working-class voters, who have consistently formed a steadfast base for the former president,” said Kevin Wagner, Ph.D., professor of political science at FAU. “This persistent support continues to bolster Trump’s strong and steady position within the party.”
Poll Shows Non-Trump Support Seen as ‘Disloyal’
The PolCom Lab poll further reveals that 1 in 5 Republicans perceive supporting a candidate other than Trump in the primaries as disloyal, posing a challenging environment for any contender seeking to challenge the former president’s dominance.
However, the poll also unveils a promising trend for DeSantis. The gap between Trump and DeSantis in Florida has narrowed by 7 percent since the PolCom Lab’s April poll results, indicating that the race has the potential to tighten as the election gets closer.
The poll shows that DeSantis would defeat Biden by 13 percent (49 percent vs. 36
percent) among Floridians, which is larger than the 10 percent edge Trump has over the president. The survey also found that 54 percent of Floridians “strongly” or “somewhat” approve of the job DeSantis is doing as governor.
“These poll results could be an important motivator for DeSantis to promote his bid for the Republican primary, as he may be a stronger candidate against the incumbent,” said Dukhong Kim, Ph.D., associate professor of political science at FAU. “The poll indicates that the margin held by Trump or DeSantis at this time is larger than the 3.3 percent vote difference observed in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting that Florida is shifting toward becoming a safe state for Republicans.”
Other GOP Contenders Also Gain (Some) Voter Attention
Trump and DeSantis lead the political fight for the presidency among GOP voters, with other names holding limited traction. Notable figures such as former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence are each garnering a mere 2 percent of support. However, minority candidates Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy have drawn some interest, with 2.5 percent and 3.6 percent respectively. The poll shows Black and Hispanic voters having a more significant interest in minority GOP candidates.
The poll, conducted from June 27 to July 1, included a sample of 933 Florida voters. The margin of error stands at +/- 3.2 percentage points at the 95-percent confidence level, with higher margins of error in each subsample. The survey utilized automated telephone interviews (Smart IVR) for data collection.

FAU’s Madden Center Named Oasis Of Excellence
The Madden Center for Value Creation at Florida Atlantic University was named an Oasis of Excellence by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA).
The center, launched a year ago to give FAU students a foundation in understanding value creation, is now the third center at the university to receive the designation. It joins the Adams Center for Entrepreneurship , which was named in 2019, and the Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise , awarded in 2020.
“We admire ACTA’s important work in universities across the country, and are honored to be recognized for our commitment to high academic standards, free inquiry, and donor integrity,” said Siri Terjesen , Ph.D., an associate dean in FAU’s College of Business and executive director of the center.
Founded with the help of a donation from independent researcher and author Bartley J. Madden, the center focuses on value creation as an essential concept for succeeding in business and teaching students to become value creators themselves. The Madden Center also runs programs that allow students to take part in research and hosts various scholars and conferences.
“In just one year, the Madden Center has launched a free certificate
in value creation (currently with over 1,400 students), hosted twelve research conferences, organized a biotech and longevity conference, offered civics training to incarcerated persons in South Florida, and hosted many elected political leaders in the Florida state government and U.S. Congress,” Terjesen said of the center’s achievements.
The ACTA, based in Washington D.C., is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to academic freedom, academic excellence and accountability in higher education. The Oases of Excellence program was started in 2014 to award outstanding programs at universities and colleges throughout the country that introduce their students to diverse opinions, American heritage and the fundamental arts and sciences.
The project now has more than 80 programs at various institutions and is a critical resource for alumni and donors who want to support a well-rounded liberal arts education.
“ACTA is a national leader in their mission to join students and alumni with leading research centers at top universities,” said Daniel Gropper , Ph.D., dean of FAU’s College of Business . “We are very pleased to be recognized for a third center at FAU that enhances our students’ education and builds opportunities for our faculty.”

Shielding Your Home: Best Ways to Protect Against Hurricanes
Hurricane season is here, and now more that ever, it’s crucial to fortify your home against the onslaught of these powerful storms. By taking proactive measures and implementing robust safeguards, you can enhance the resilience of your house and protect both your property and loved ones. Here are some of the best ways to shield your home from the ravages of hurricanes:
Reinforce Doors and Windows: Strengthening your doors and windows is vital to prevent wind and debris from breaching your home’s interior. Install impact-resistant shutters or plywood boards to shield windows, and consider upgrading entry doors to those built to withstand hurricane-force winds.
Secure Roof and Soffits: High winds can peel away roof shingles and tear off soffits, leaving your home vulnerable to water damage. Ensure your roof is in good condition and consider reinforcing it with hurricane straps or clips. Reinforce soffits with materials designed to resist wind uplift.
Clear Yard and Secure Outdoor Items: Trim trees and remove weak branches to minimize the risk of falling limbs during a storm. Secure outdoor furniture, grills, and other loose items, as they can transform into dangerous projectiles in high winds.
Reinforce Garage Doors: Garage doors are often susceptible to damage during hurricanes. Strengthen them by installing a bracing system or using a reinforced door that meets wind-resistant standards.
Reinforce Anchoring Systems: If you live in a coastal area, ensure your home’s foundation is securely anchored. Bolting your house to the foundation and reinforcing connections between walls, roof, and foundation will help it withstand

the strong winds and storm surge. Install a Generator: Power outages are common during hurricanes. Consider installing a generator to ensure you have a backup power source for essential appliances and medical equipment. Remember to follow safety guidelines when using generators and keep them outside in a well-ventilated area.
Create a Disaster Preparedness Kit: Assemble a comprehensive emergency kit that includes essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water, batteries, flashlights, a first-aid kit, and important documents. Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and have a plan in place for your family’s safety.
Purchase Flood Insurance: Flooding is a significant concern during hurricanes. Standard homeowner’s insurance typically does not cover flood damage, so consider obtaining flood insurance to protect your property. Be aware of the coverage limits and policy terms.
Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates from reliable sources and heed evacuation orders or other directives from local authorities. Stay informed about the storm’s progress and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety.
Regular Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of your home’s structure, including roofs, gutters, and drainage systems. Identify and address any weaknesses or vulnerabilities well before hurricane season.
Remember, protecting your home from hurricanes is an ongoing process that requires vigilance and preparation. By implementing these measures and staying informed, you can increase the resilience of your home and mitigate potential damage caused by these formidable storms.
Hurricane season brings with it a formidable force of nature that can wreak havoc on communities, leaving behind a trail of destruction. With the increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes in recent years, it has become more crucial than ever to prioritize preparedness. Taking proactive measures and being well-prepared can significantly minimize the risks associated with these powerful storms and safeguard lives, property, and the overall well-being of affected regions. In this article, we will explore the importance of being prepared for hurricane season and highlight key steps individuals and communities can take to mitigate the impact of these natural disasters.
Preserving Lives: The safety and well-being of individuals should be the utmost priority when facing an impending hurricane. Being prepared allows individuals to have the necessary resources, knowledge, and plans in place to protect themselves and their loved ones. From evacuation plans to emergency supply kits, early preparation ensures that vital necessities such as food, water, medications, and first-aid supplies are readily available. Understanding evacuation routes and having designated meeting points can help prevent chaos during evacuation efforts. Furthermore, keeping informed through reliable sources and heeding official warnings can enable individuals to take appropriate actions promptly, potentially saving lives.
Minimizing Property Damage: Hurricanes pose a significant threat to property, with high winds, torrential rainfall, storm surges, and flying debris causing substantial destruction. Preparedness measures can significantly reduce the impact of these forces. Securing or reinforcing windows, doors, and roofs, trimming trees near buildings, and securing outdoor items can prevent potential damage. Additionally, having adequate insurance coverage and documenting valuable possessions through photographs or videos can simplify the post-storm recovery process. Being prepared also involves having an emergency fund to cover immediate expenses and arranging for temporary accommodation if necessary.
Enhancing Community Resilience:
A community’s preparedness plays a vital role in effectively responding to and recovering from a hurricane. Local authorities, organizations, and residents must work together to create comprehensive emergency plans, establish communication networks, and organize evacuation procedures. Educating the community about the risks and necessary precautions empowers individuals to take action and be proactive in their preparedness efforts. Community initiatives such as neighborhood watch programs, mutual assistance networks, and emergency response training can strengthen the collective resilience of a community, enabling them to withstand the challenges of a hurricane and recover more swiftly.
Economic Stability:
Beyond the immediate impact on lives and property, hurricanes can have long-lasting effects on the economy of affected regions. By being prepared, businesses can minimize disruption, protect their assets, and ensure the safety of their employees. Proactive measures such as backing up critical data, securing facilities, and developing continuity plans can facilitate a smoother recovery and reduce financial losses. Moreover, the collective preparedness of a community can expedite the post-disaster recovery process, allowing businesses to resume operations sooner and aid in the overall economic stability of the region.
The importance of being prepared for hurricane season cannot be overstated. It is a responsibility shared by individuals, communities, and authorities alike. By prioritizing proactive measures, such as creating emergency plans, assembling supply kits, and staying informed, we can mitigate the impact of hurricanes, preserve lives, and safeguard our property. Preparation fosters resilience, strengthens communities, and enhances economic stability, enabling us to navigate the challenges posed by these natural disasters more effectively. Let us embrace the power of preparedness and work together to build a safer and more resilient future for all.

Hanley Foundation Plans Boca Celebrity Cookoff to Raise Money for Addiction Treatment
Hanley Foundation’s 2nd Annual Boca Celebrity Cookoff will be held on Thursday, August 3 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Waterstone Resort and Marina, 999 East Camino Real, Boca Raton. The event will include a gourmet happy hour with appetizers, a signature cocktail and mocktail, raffles and entertainment and is a Boca Chamber Festival Days event. The Cookoff will serve as the kickoff for the 3rd Annual Brice Makris Brunch.
Troy McLellan, President and CEO of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce will serve as judge. Neil Saffer, Co-Founder and Principal Auctioneer, Saffer & Company, will emcee. Boca celebrities who will compete in the cookoff are Tina Polsky, Florida State Senator and 2022 champion, Marty Haberer, President & CEO of the Adolph & Rose Levis JCC, Brian White, Vice President & Director of Athletics, Florida Atlantic University and Jan Savarick, CEO, Savarick Consulting Group.
“With community support of the Boca Celebrity Cookoff, the funds raised will go to our Lifesaver Scholarship Program, which restores hope, reunites families and saves lives,” Rachel Pappert Docekal, MBA, Ed.D., Hanley Foundation’s CEO said.
The Brice Makris Brunch will take
place on December 10, 2023, at Boca West Country Club from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hanley Foundation Board Member and Boca resident John Makris and his wife Michelle will chair the event that honors their son, Brice Makris, who passed away in March 2020 from a Fentanyl overdose.
Tragically, overdose rates have skyrocketed, and many people in our community struggle with mental health issues and substance misuse. With the help of the Boca Chamber and the Makris family, Hanley Foundation is increasing awareness of substance use disorders in South Palm Beach County. With the proceeds of this Boca Chamber Festival Days event and Hanley Foundation’s Annual Brice Makris Brunch, Hanley Foundation will be able to increase its prevention programming to stop substance use disorder before it begins and provide scholarship programs to provide resources for those who cannot afford the financial burden of recovery.
Celebrity Cookoff sponsors include Waterstone Resort & Marina, Allegiance Home Health, Sipe Spine & Sport, The Nathanson Mortgage Team, and Andee Media.
Tickets are $25 in advance and $40 at the door. Visit Hanley.info/FestivalDays for more information, call 561-268-2355 or email events@hanleyfoundation.org.

Boca Raton’s Fuller Center Benefitted from the Boca West Children’s Foundation Bikes for Tikes Program
The joy of summertime bike rides was made possible for hundreds of local kids thanks to the Boca West Children’s Foundation’s (BWCF) annual Bikes for Tikes program. Bikes for Tikes provides a bike and helmet to children who might not have the opportunity to experience the rite of passage of owning a bicycle otherwise. Fuller Center held pre-kindergarten pre-graduation parties during which the children were presented with bikes:
Parents were invited to pick up the bikes on the West Campus at 10130 185th St. S., Boca Raton.
“Fuller Center students are from hardworking, under-resourced families. For these families, the purchase of a bike can be out of reach,” said Pamela Weinroth, Executive Director/COO of Boca West Children’s Foundation. “The gen -
erosity and support we receive from the community makes a world of difference in a child’s life!”
“Seeing the joy on the kids’ faces as they receive their bikes is truly priceless and a testament to the impact that this program has on these children’s lives,” said Richard Zenker, Board Chair of the Boca West Children’s Foundation.
Sponsors include Let’s Have a Smile Foundation, Palm Beach Country Club Foundation, and Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
“We are so grateful to Boca West Children’s Foundation for the many bikes for Fuller Center pre-kindergarten graduates,” said Ellyn Okrent, CEO of Fuller Center. “It’s such a wonderful way to celebrate kids who might not receive a bike otherwise.”

Miller elevated to Lynn’s Lacrosse head coach
The Lynn University department of athletics has recently announced that Mark Miller has been promoted to head coach of the Fighting Knight men’s lacrosse program after serving in the interim role during part of the 2022-23 athletic year.
Miller guided Lynn to seven wins this spring with a sixth-place finish in the SSC. The Fighting Knights finished fifth in the league in scoring (202 goals), fourth in goals against average (11.93) and third in penalty killing (.750).
The Fighting Knights twice set the single-game scoring record this past spring with 24 goals against Dominican (Mar. 1) and 25 goals against Davis & Elkins (Mar. 9).
“I am excited that Mark will be representing our Men’s Lacrosse program as our Head Coach,” said Interim Athletics Director Kathy Kroupa. “Mark has done an out-

standing job here at Lynn, first as an assistant and then as our Interim Head Coach this last year. He brings a great deal of experience and leadership to this program and promotes a culture of development with his student-athletes that will be sure to lead to even more success in our Men’s Lacrosse program.”
Miller arrived at Lynn University in 2019 as the program’s defensive and recruiting coordinator.
The Fighting Knight defense paced the SSC in 2020 in saves per game (13.67) and ranked third in goals against average (11.83).
In 2021, Lynn finished the season at 6-2 overall and ranked second in the SSC in both goals against average (9.69) and save percentage (.542).
Miller came to Lynn after serving on the lacrosse coaching staff at both Bowdoin and Washington & Lee.

the Year for the 2022-23 academic year. Lola graduated summa cum laude with her Associate in Arts degree in May.
“I can attest firsthand what an outstanding individual Lola is both on and off the court,” said PBSC Athletics Director John Scarpino. “She competed with an energy and passion that was infectious, consistently pushing herself and her teammates. If there was an award to win, Lola won it.”
This academic award is just another achievement for Vidamour, who helped lead the Panthers to both the FCSAA and NJCAA championships.
She was named the FCSAA Player of the Year, FCSAA and NJCAA Pair of the Year (along with Angelina Botolino) and was named a NJCAA First-Team All-American.

Florida Atlantic Beach Volleyball honored with AVCA Team Academic Award
Florida Atlantic Beach Volleyball was honored on Thursday with the 2023 USMC-AVCA Team Academic Award for the team’s academic excellence during the 2022-23 academic year.
“Our team deserves to be recognized for this award,” expressed head coach Steve Grotowski. “They are a bright and hardworking group of young women! I can’t thank them enough for representing our team and Florida Atlantic at such a high level!”
The Sandy Owls are one of 66 collegiate beach programs to be recognized and finished the 2022-23 academic season with an impressive 3.563 team cumulative GPA. Florida Atlantic is one of 1,333 total collegiate and high school programs recognized, marking a record
For the third year in a row, the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team will open the season in FAU Stadium. On August 17, the Owls will face Arkansas Little Rock to not only begin their 2023 season, but the official competition for all of Florida Atlantic Athletics in the 2023-24 year. The match will begin at 7 p.m.

number of programs honored by the AVCA for their academic achievements.
“The commitment our coaches make to help their student-athletes pursue the best versions of themselves is evident in the academic accomplishments highlighted today.” said AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon. “Achievement on the court has always been closely tied to success in the classroom which is reflected by the number of championship programs honored.”
During the 2023 season, the Sandy Owls captured their second-ever conference title and first C-USA championship, in addition to earning the program’s second-ever NCAA postseason appearance at the 2023 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship.

Schanuel Selected 11th Overall in 2023 MLB Draft
Nolan Schanuel made Florida Atlantic history on Sunday night when the Los Angeles Angels drafted him with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Schanuel surpassed C.J. Chatham, who was selected 51st overall (second round) in 2016, as FAU Athletics’ previous highest professional draft pick in any sport.
The reigning Conference USA Player of the Year led all of Division I in batting average (.447), on base percentage (.615), and walks (71). Schanuel also led C-USA in slugging percentage (.868), hits (88), and OPS (1.483). He was a semifinalist for several national honors, including USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award and the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award. D1Baseball, Perfect Game, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Baseball America, and the ABCA each named Schanuel as a First Team All-American.
Schanuel on the moment he heard his name called by the Angels
“This has been a lifelong dream of mine. And to be able to be in the Angels organization now has just made that dream 10 times better. I’m so excited, I’m ready to go, I’m ready to fly out today.”
Lynn’s Troese, Stanton named USILA Scholar All-Americans
On what he hopes will be the next steps
“I want to be right there with (2022 first round pick) Zach Neto, Ben Joyce, Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani. I want to be a teammate of theirs and get going.”
Head Coach
John McCormack
“I’m unbelievably proud of Nolan. He did this. He earned this. The Angels are getting a great baseball player and an even better human being. He’s a hard worker, he’s selfless, and he’s a great teammate.”
Angels Scouting Director Tim McIlvaine
“Nolan does a lot things that we like and that we sought out to look for. He’s got power, he can hit, he knows the zone, rarely ever strikes out. He understands the game, he’s got a really good baseball mind.”
McIlvaine on similarities to 2022 first round pick Zach Neto out of Campbell University
“I think it’s more of a coincidence that they’re both mid-major guys. More than anything we look for which guys are the right fit for us and this guy [Schanuel) is wired right. He’s a really good competitor, he really wants to win.”
The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced the 2023 Scholar All-Americans, presented by Blatant Lacrosse, and Lynn University student-athletes Mikey Troese and Jalen Stanton were among the award winners.
The duo were among 40 student-athletes from across the NCAA Division II level to receive Scholar All-American honors.
Troese and Stanton both earned USILA All-Region and All-Sunshine State Conference honors following the spring season.
Troese, a USILA Senior All-Star game participant, led the Fighting Knights in ground balls (59) and caused turnovers (18), while Stanton scored 28 goals with seven assists to go along with a team-best five man-up goals.
In the classroom, Troese carries a 3.47 GPA and majors in Hospitality Management, wile Stanton has a 3.53 GPA and majors in Investment Management.
Qualifying student-athletes must have a senior year academic standing, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be either an All-American, a North/South team member, or on an All-League or All-Conference team.
