The National Night Out that Almost Wasn’t

Originally scheduled for August 6, 2024, this year’s National Night Out event was postponed to August 13, 2024, due to inclement weather. Despite the delay, the rescheduled gathering at the 3200 Block of Ellamont Rd., turned out to be a fantastic evening of community bonding and engagement.

Attendees were treated to ice cream and lemonade as they mingled with fellow neighbors and Ashburton friends. Kids played games which kept everyone entertained, while others took time to walk around the neighborhood in groups, completing three laps together.

These walks sparked conversations about the future of our community, with participants sharing their thoughts on neighborhood vacancies, ongoing developments, and their hopes for a thriving, connected environment.

Throughout the event, families interacted with local first responders (local company 29 and company 12). This offered a chance to strengthen ties between residents and law enforcement, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that keeps our neighborhoods safe.

The night concluded with a shared sense of purpose and unity, reminding everyone of the importance of staying connected and working together to build a better future.

The event was a great success, and we look forward to many more National Night Out celebrations.

Ashburton Goes Back To School

The Ashburton School Supply Giveaway was a rousing success!

There were tons of kids and adults eating ice cream and loading up on gifted school supplies!

Backpacks were a favorite of the kids as well as practical items like pens pencils, crayons and paper.

Many thanks to organizer Chauna Watson and team!

Ashburton Receives Net Grant to Build On the Urban Tree Program!

Recently, Ashburton received a grant in the amount of $14,948 from the Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT) to build on our Urban Trees Program efforts – its second award from CBT.

Components of the new grant include funds to plant more fruit trees and bee-loving shrubs on the Callaway median, create a campaign and purchase native trees for neighbors willing to plant on their property, and hire a professional to water and care for our newly-planted trees and shrubs during the summer months.

We all know how amazing urban street and yard trees can be. They increase air and water quality, improve neighborhood livability, help mitigate storm water, boost property values and help beautify our neighborhood. They do a ton, but they don’t plant themselves.

We’d love your help!

We’re planning a kick-off Sunday, October 6, from 2-4 p.m. when we will plant new trees, prune established ones and pick apples. Stay tuned for more on our plan to help neighbors plant yard trees.

If you’d like to be part of the Ashburton Urban Trees Committee or volunteer your time on the day of our kick-off, please contact Tori Burns at 410.458.0827.
