Winter Travel Travelling in Winter can be a great way to escape the cold and head to sunnier states. Bainbridge Technologies provide some top tips for your Winter adventures.

PRE TRIP: Check your battery health. Winter is notorious for flat batteries and forgotten boat or trailer batteries in winter storage. So, before you hit the road, make sure you correctly charge your batteries for optimal health and to ensure better battery lifespan. Using a correct battery charger for your battery is key, a good rule of thumb is to find one rated at 10% of your auxiliary battery capacity. If your battery charger is too powerful for your battery, it can easily overcharge the battery reducing

your battery’s life expectancy. For example, if your battery is 100Ah, you would look to buy a battery charger rated at 10A. The CTEK MXS 10 for example, delivers 10A to 12V batteries ranging from 20 – 200Ah and has a winter program for charging in cold weather and an AGM option which maximises the performance life of most Stop/Start batteries.

POWER TO CAMP: You’re going to use a certain amount of power every day, depending on what electrical accessories you want to run. To maintain healthy batteries, you need to be able to replace the power you’ve drawn. Calculating your power draw and whether you have enough battery power is simple: add the draw of your 12V accessories such as lights and fridge.

If your total comes to 5amps and you have a 100amp battery, that means you have enough power to run those appliances for 10 hours. You calculate 50% of your batteries capacity to find out the usable amount of amp hours, because discharging below 50% greatly reduces the life expectancy of your battery. Calculate 100Ah battery – 2 = 50Ah of usable battery power. 50Ah = 5amps of your appliances x 10 hours of running time.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SOLAR: The Baintech 120W Solar Blanket produces up to 6A in optimal conditions, making it a perfect power source to add to your camping set up. The Baintech Blanket is lightweight and makes set up a breeze, you can pick your set-up spot since it’ll work on your roof rack or bonnet, the top of your camper trailer, caravan or RV, or rolled out on the ground at camp.

or whether you’re relying on solar to power your whole campsite for weeks on end. • The size of your battery bank is also vitally important, because you need to be able to store power for when the sun’s not shining. • As a rule of thumb, you can calculate your solar requirements by doubling your draw of your 12v accessories from your batteries. If you draw an average of 5A then you need to put back an average of 10A during daylight hours in via your solar. Bainbridge Technologies are your 12volt and power solution specialists, stocking everything from solar blankets to power sockets. Contact them for all your 12v solutions for camping, 4WD, RV and marine!

• Solar requirements will differ whether you’re heading away for a quick trip and want to keep your batteries topped up,

WINTER IS COMING, ARE YOU READY? During this time of year, we all notice the drop-in temperature and start to crave different taste sensations as well as warm, hearty meals. It’s also the time of year where we like to hibernate a little and not have to go grocery shopping as often or duck out for ‘one or two’ ingredients we need to make the dish we had in mind to satisfy our hankerings. There is nothing worse than thinking you have everything you need at home in the kitchen to whip up a nice Winter dish, to then finally arrive home and find that the dish you intended on cooking needs more ingredients. Who really wants to go grocery shopping after a hard day’s work? That’s where stocking up on some healthy Winter warmers and home style cooked meals from Gourmet Meals can be one of the best things you do this Winter. Mouth-watering casseroles are sure to satisfy your taste buds this time of year. Some

of our favourites are your choice of chicken, beef or lamb casseroles. Our roasts are also very popular with a selection of beef, lamb and pork on offer. Other dishes to warm you up this Winter are curry prawns and lamb curry plus many more. With our portion-controlled meals, it makes it easy to maintain a healthy weight during the cooler months. Research shows that we do feel hungrier as Winter draws near, our appetites seem to change as the days grow shorter. The research says it is our primitive impulses encouraging us to stockpile calories for the cold Winter days that lay ahead. Some studies show that people eat about 200 calories per day more in Winter than during the warmer months. This is due to several factors, such as less light for example, encouraging us to seek food and eat it faster during shorter days; people are also less inclined to go

outside and exercise as much during the colder months and more tempted to stay in bed longer, all things that lead to a reduction of calories burnt. Now that we know how the cooler weather can encourage us to eat more than we need, why not give yourself peace of mind by ordering Gourmet Meals for yourself and your family. Knowing the exact nutritional value of your meals is advantageous this time of year to keep track of what you are putting into your body. All of the Gourmet Meals can be sorted by number of calories, low fat, low sugar, high protein, dairy free, gluten free, low salt and high protein – so easy! Forest Bathing, Earthing and Nature Immersion The amazing benefits for our mental health, physical health, happiness & more. The best healing sanctuary in the world is all about forest bathing. Mother nature at her best, is what we’re talking about today. Science is now backing up the ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic medicine, about the importance of human beings being connected to Mother Nature. A huge amount of research now exists on earthing. I.e. that when we take our shoes and socks off occasionally, or get in the garden we literally get an influx of negatively charged ions that come into the human body, and as if dowse the inflammatory fires

that line our tissues. This is being shown to significantly reduce chronic inflammatory illnesses and pain, improving blood profiles, and helping regulate our body clock, particularly our sleep/wake cycle, and other circadian rhythms. Now the science is coming out to show us the importance of connecting to Mother Nature generally. Forest Bathing - Shinrin-Yoku A famous doctor in Japan, called Dr. Li has spoken and written a lot about this recently. In Japan, they have a saying called ‘shinrinyoku’, and it’s basically the art and science about how mother nature, trees and plants, promote health and wellbeing in human beings.

It is absolutely profound. We’ve heard a lot about gut bacteria in recent years, that we have to eat certain foods, and do certain things to promote a healthy gut bacteria in our own colon. What we now know is that the soil also has its own microbiome, and according to ancient wisdom, this actually cycles or changes with the seasons. But when we connect to Mother Nature, connect to the ground, and be in forests and natural environments, it’s likely that we actually integrate that microbiome to promote and strengthen our own gut microbiome. We now know that trees elicit certain essential oils or chemicals (phytonicides) that allow them to communicate with other plants and trees, as well as to deter microbes

or other invaders. A little bit like pheromones in our human body that we emit to communicate with other people. E.g. so we know what relationships are good for us, and what ones aren’t. These chemicals are now known to help clear our mind and lower our stress levels.

some really interesting studies recently.

Pschoterratica, Biophilia & the Latest Research

In a collection of four studies, titled ‘Can nature make us more caring?’, people that were more immersed in nature became more intrinsically motivated. They were more caring, more community-oriented, less self-interested or self-centered. Those that were not connected to nature were more self-centered, more self-interested, and more externally motivated.2

Ever heard of ‘Psychoterratica’? It’s the fear or problems of being disconnected from nature. What about Biophilia? Biophilia came into consciousness in the 1980’s when E.O. Wilson, a biologist and author, said that ‘loving nature is part of our DNA’. It all points to the incredible healing power of nature as evidenced by

One study showed that when people immersed themselves in nature for four days without technology, their creativity and problem solving went up by 50%.1

Other studies have shown that when we connect more with nature

- we forest bath, earth or ground etc - anxiety comes down, mental health improves, our immune system becomes stronger, we have more anti-cancer proteins, natural killer cells are stimulated among other benefits.3 Back to Ancient Ayurvedic Wisdom All this is really just backing up the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda. In my studies in Maharishi Ayurveda, connecting to Mother Nature was always promoted as one of the highest medicines. Did you know that doctors in Scotland can now ‘prescribe spending time in nature’ to their patients? How great is that. Instead a drug or pill, “Tom, what you need is to go camping for e few days or take your partner for a hike in the hills.”

The question is, “how can we get out of our cities a little bit more, out of our homes, and reconnect to the profound healing benefits that mother nature gives us?” How can we get out of our indoor environments and do our yoga outside, going for a hike, doing our walk, jog or even strength training out in a forest or a natural environment? Future Trends As evidenced by the Global Wellness Summit recently, the coming trends to watch out for in this space will be things like: •

Pop-up parks - so in urban areas, there’s going to be popup parks that we can earth and ground ourselves and connect to nature. Green exercise - a shift away from just exercising in a gymnasium, or doing yoga in a yoga class. In Canada today, they’re starting forest skating. Rather than going to the ice skating park, you’ll ice-skate through a forest. Forest Bathing Clubs - There’s already a Global Institute of Forest Bathing and a San Francisco Forest Bathing Club that’s very popular. Biophilic design - how we design our workplaces, our offices and our homes, so that we integrate the benefits of nature.

Traditionally, this was just about bringing some green plants into our office place or home, but

also there’s a science now about designing things so we maximise natural sunlight, natural air flow, and a whole host of other ways that we connect to the healing power of nature. They’re some of the trends so what can we do practically to use this knowledge? Tips to Help 1. Do your exercise in nature more - Incorporate Green Exercise? As we’ve said, get out of the yoga class or gym occasionally and do your strength training (I do chin ups on tree branches, push-ups on rocks etc), cardiovascular or flexibility work in a natural environment. So you’re getting fresh air, you’re getting natural light exposure or sunlight and maybe even doing it ‘earthed’ (barefoot) if it’s safe to do so. 2. Make your home or workplace more nature friendly Bring in more green plants, e.g. office ferns, spider plants are very good for keeping the air clean. Increase natural flow and try to get as much natural light in as you possibly can. 3. Earth or Ground Yourself More E.g. having your lunch in a park, doing your stretches while touching a tree, taking your shoes and socks off and walking on the wet sand if you’re near a beach or a natural body of water. More earthing tips at bottom of my Earthing Blog

4. Take your Social or Community Evens to Mother Nature’s Playground Maybe instead of the big birthday celebration being in a crowded restaurant late at night, occasionally can you go back to the idea of connecting communally with picnics or outdoor celebrations? Saturday or Sunday afternoon picnics, birthday parties or other celebratory gatherings in a park or bushland rather than a noisy, smelly, claustrophobic cafe. You still get to celebrate, eat good food, but also get all the benefits of forest bathing at the same time. 5. Take Nature Holidays Rather than heading Las Vegas or Shanghai for your next holiday, can you go camping or ‘glamping’? Can you incorporate hiking or nature activities instead of casinos? They’re just some ideas. I’m sure by being creative, you can come up with a whole bunch of other ideas about getting back to nature more. And I’d love to hear them. Seed Wisdom Today, a growing body of science is now backing up how ‘connection to nature’, as the ancient wisdom has always said, is one of the most profound healing forces on the planet. And we just feel so much better when we do it. I hope you enjoyed the article & happy forest bathing. Mark Bunn

Sun Gazing: Do You Do This Early Morning High Performance Ritual? Do you sun gaze or at least connect to the early morning sun as a daily practice? Are you aware of the incredible mental, physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of such a daily ritual? While many of us know about highperformers morning habits such as making their bed, planning their day and exercising, connecting with early morning sunlight is not so well know. As understood by most ancient cultures, the master regulator of all our internal health and performance cycles is the cycle of the sun. Most advanced traditional cultures throughout time have started their day greeting the sun through an ancient ritual called ‘sun gazing’. (Others, as in India along the Ganges river, do things like Yoga ‘sun salutes’ while facing East as the sun rises). More and more high-level business performers are now understanding that our optimum human performance clock is synced to the cycles of Mother Nature. As such they make sure they get outside to reap the incredible mental, physical and emotional benefits of morning

sunlight through the eyes. (Many of us today live in artificially lit homes and work in artificially lit offices and are ‘mal-illuminated’.) Benefits of morning sunlight exposure include; • improved energy & immune function •

stimulation of healthy brain chemistry

the ultimate mood-booster (anti-depressant) & emotional balancer • optimal weight through its effects on metabolic and thyroid function

regulation of our entire internal body clock

* A key benefit is in assisting optimal sleep at night ... as our sleep cycle regulation starts first thing in the morning!

Now, while the ancients understood that the sun will not harm the human eye in the first 45 minutes of sunrise ... the first 10 degrees of arc, you don’t necessarily have to look directly at the sun - ‘sun gaze’. (If you do, this should strictly only be done in the first 30-45 minutes of

sunrise and for very short periods seconds - to begin with.) However, even indirect sunlight through the eyes will bring significant benefits. The main thing is to actively get outside for at least a few minutes early morning to sync your physiology with our planets No.1 source of life-energy, vitality and positivity. And if you can combine exercise, earthing (see my blog)) &/or connection with others at the same time, all power to you. The sun (Surya), often maligned in our modern world was traditionally understood and indeed honoured for being the central to all life and every aspect of human health. We just need to respect it and connect with it in the right way ... not too much but also not too little. The importance of early morning sunlight exposure for optimal #health and #workperformance #wellbeing Do you make a daily practice of connecting with the sun or at least getting outside in the early-morning? What do you do and what difference does it make to your life and your work performance? I’m sure others would love to hear your inspiration.

Daily Habits of High Achievers - 3 Key Morning Rituals Research shows that those who consistently perform at high levels commonly do things as daily practices or rituals that other don’t. Here’s a few.

get outside (out of their artificially lit homes and office places) to experience the mental, physical, and spiritual benefits of morning sunlight through the eyes.

Connect with the Morning Sun

Benefits of morning exposure include;

What do Hugh Jackman, Oprah Winfrey, Tim Ferriss, Katy Perry, Ray Dalio (Head of the world’s largest hedge fund), Ariana Huffington, Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen Degeneres and countless other world class performers have in common? They start their day with 20 minutes of TM or Transcendental Meditation (other high performers use other forms of meditation).

High performers intrinsically understand that our optimum human performance clock is synced to the cycles of Mother Nature. As understood by the ancients, the master regulator of all our internal health and optimal performance cycles is the cycle of the sun. Traditional cultures throughout history have started their day greeting the sun through an ancient ritual called ‘sun gazing’. Hgh performers make sure they

Transcendence

According to Tim Ferriss, author of New York Times Best-seller ‘Tools of Titans’, meditation is by

far the most common habit or daily ritual amongst the world’s highest performing individuals. Don’t have time to meditate? Almost universally everyone who meditates, specifically transcending-based meditation like TM, remarks that they get far more done when they meditate and couldn’t imagine life or work without it. We can’t build a 100 storey skyscraper without first digging deep into the ground. Likewise, we can’t sustain high level, dynamic outward activity without first (and regularly) going within and enlivening our deepest (inner) source of energy, creativity and intelligence. Transcending does this which is why such a high percentage of high performers do it as their most important daily habit. As the latest neuroscience and brain mapping research clearly demonstrates, such meditation

produces more global brainwave activity and peak brain coherence. Do less achieve more. More on Transcendental Meditation (TM) and Transcendance Exercise Another hallmark of high achievers is that a very high percentage start their day with physical activity. Research shows that those that make a habit of exercising early morning have a compliance rate of 75%. Those who leave it until later in the day (after work) have a compliance of around 25%. Again, the research suggests that the time devoted to physical movement or exercise in the early hours is more than returned in terms of improved efficiency, brain performance, decision-making and

all around productivity for the rest of the day. (Early morning is also the best time for exercise according the understanding of Ayurveda and our daily body clock.) * Richard Branson has been quoted as saying daily exercise gives him 4 hours of improved productivity. Connect to the morning sun, transcend to develop your most precious resource – consciousness - and get your body moving early to help maximize your work and life success. Mark Bunn * These are just three of the practices discussed in Mark’s highly popular ‘Daily Habits of High Achievers’.

THE AUSTRALIAN STAPLE

As the months are getting a slight chill, well up in the tropics is a slight chill, we turn towards the winter warmers and soup always comes to mind. An all-time Aussie favourite is pumpkin soup. The smooth, silky texture of this soup served with some warm crusty bread is a pure delight. It’s like a cuddle from the culinary world. With these amazing golden orange flesh and stunning greys, shiny green and yellow skins, they talk to me as I pass them by at the markets and green grocer. Not only to create so many wonderful dishes but as food art, a table centre piece. Food art, in its raw natural state can be just as stunning as a bunch of flowers. Pumpkin soup is an Australian staple, a mummy meal of the soup world. The sweet, earthy taste brings back so many childhood memories. A warming comfort food. I am a huge soup fan of all soups. There textures, consistency, whether it’s a clearer consommé, a vegetable puree drizzled with a swirl of cream,

a noodle broth or grain studded bowl of hearty goodness. They all have a place in my kitchen and a warming tone to my belly. My market hunting and gathering can be, well it is, over indulgent. Such amazing produce and as much as I try not to, I do over buy. Can’t seem to fix this problem. When I see it, I want to play? So many dishes come to mind, so many amazing meals to produce, to experiment with. So as the weekend comes around and I need to make space in the fridge for this week’s hit. A pot of soup goes on. Starting with onions, then whatever hasn’t been consumed. Often some of my spice blends will go in, too spice up a little. Curry powder being the favourite at the moment but Ras el hangout, Jamaican jerk and Persian all get a look in. Every week changes as the produce comes and goes. Some soups are pureed, some hearty chunky styles. It is a fantastic weekly treat and one I truly recommend. Healthy, filling and warming... so lets get soup making!

Pumpkin soup INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

• • • • • • •

1 large brown onion, roughly chopped 1/4 cup chopped leek 1 large potato, diced 3 cups dice pumpkin 1.5 ltr chicken or vegetable stock 1/4 or 1/2 cup of thicken cream, depending on how creamy you desire Little extra thickened cream for drizzling 1/2 tsp white pepper 1/2 tsp celery salt (optional) Sea salt to taste 2 tsp olive oil Chopped chives 2 bay leaves, scrunched (optional)

METHOD Place chopped pumpkin on roasting tray with 1 teaspoon of oil and dusting of salt and pepper. Mix with hands to ensure pumpkin is covered with the oil and seasoning. Roast till just tender. In a large saucepan place onion and 1 tsp oil. Sauté and add the leek. You don’t want any colour on the onions and leek, just cook till soft. Add the potato and stock and bay leaves. Bring to the boil and simmer until the potato is cooked. Add the cooked pumpkin and seasoning. Bring back up to the boil, take off the heat and allow to cool a little. Blenders don’t like it too hot. Remove the bay leaves. If you think it needs some more liquid, stock or water can be added. This depends on how thick you want the soup to be. Blend cooled soup with the cream. A stick blender can be used. Check the seasoning and then reheat to serve. Garnish with drizzle of cream and chopped chives

TIPS 1. If making your own chicken stock, use roasted bones, way more flavour. Brought cooked chooks are fab for this. If you want to go a little Asian, add ginger and lemon grass to the stock. 2. Other flavours like herbs, pesto, spices, sour cream, citrus, cheeses and oils can be add to change the taste. If you’re not sure take a little soup out and add the desired flavouring, taste and if it works for you, go for it. Blue Costello cheese works for me. 3. Play around with different croutons. Herb, cheese, tapenade, pesto or spiced can add an excellent touch. 4. Serve in little tea cups as a canapé. 5. Made too much, can be used as a pasta sauce. Add some roast chicken, meatballs, prawns or anything really and stir through pasta. 6. Sliced sauté onions and other vegetables will give it a bit more body. 7. Crispy bacon sprinkled on top of your pumpkin soup looks great and taste wonderful little crunchy salty bursts of flavour. 8. Stud the pumpkin soup with green peas. A sweet textural burst, even the peas and bacon together works a treat. 9. Swap the potato for sweet potato, roast it too

for a sweeter style soup. 10. This is a base for many vegetable soups. Change the pumpkin to what you have. 11. Nutmeg and pumpkin are great buddies, grate fresh if you can. 12. A different take is to add red curry paste to the onions and use coconut milk instead of cream. 13. Crispy shallots are another fabulous garnish. Crunchy little delights. 14. 14. Add some horseradish or mustard to the soup to make a lovely sauce for Atlantic salmon. 15. This soup poured over feta, ricotta and bacon stuffed cannelloni is fabulous. Sautéed leeks, and onions, add little diced garlic and the bacon. Mix with feta, ricotta, little basil and seasoning. Use fresh lasagne sheets and roll. Place some soup in the base of the baking tray. Place the rolled cannelloni. Cover with ladles of soup. Lightly drizzle cream on top, cover with foil and bake around 30 minutes, then remove foil topped with grated cheese and grill. The joy of food, it never stops giving. Not sure Ask Me!

GOING Plastic Free in a caravan What we are doing on our travels for “plastic free July As we prepare for our trip away in the van, we decided that we would keep up with our good home habits, to be taken on the road on holidays. Living our best life for us and the environment has not been something we have tackled or achieved over night, nor has it come easy in a world of convenience. We have though made some great changes over time and as these changes become our normal, we take on something new. This holiday, although we are mindful on some things, holidays is where you tend to become complacent and look for convenience, not this trip.

These 10 things I will be sticking to on the packing and preparation for the trip and also while we are away in the van.

10

All meat will be purchased from the butcher and put in our own containers, this saves purchasing pre-packed produce. We will also save some meals to purchase locally when on the road, (of course remembering to also pack into our reusable containers)

9

All fruit and veges will be purchased from the farmers market prior to leaving and utilising all reusable and environmentally friendly bags – again we will top up by shopping local while travelling.

8

The weekend prior will be spent food prepping our snacks including protein balls and slices, which of course means there is no stopping on the way and grabbing a quick packaged snack.

7

Re-usable travel mug for coffee and water bottle to refill.

6

We are transitioning from body wash to cakes of soap ( we all will have our own for those that keep their hygiene to themselves) imagine eliminating these bottles every month

5

2

Switch to recycled toilet paper

1

Biggest and best thing we will do this month …. (drum role) is we have stopped buying soda water in bottles and invested in a Soda Stream – considering we drink min 2-3 bottles of Soda water a day (as we don’t drink wine / beer / juice / softdrink – we only drink tea, coffee and soda water than we are saving over 750 bottles a year. So as you can see if you keep it relatively simple, you can make big changes in your habits. Be part of the change this July and commit to something – check out the links below for more details.

Shampoo and conditioner will be purchased from a bulk produce store (not so fun fact – did you know you could say nearly every piece of plastic ever manufactured still exists in some form today – not cool huh)

4

No straws unless paper (this we have had been doing for so long that it is normal)

3

Re-useable bags (always in my bag)

Treasure Hunts Who doesn’t love a treasure hunt? When we were on a work stop in Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, my kids found their first painted rock and we became initiated into the painted rock phenomenon, which is not unlike a treasure hunt. Some talented adults and creative kids paint rocks and hide them in playgrounds and other public spaces for kids to find. Once found you take a photo and re-hide them for someone else to find.

It doesn’t have to be in the same town, there are many, many towns now across Australia that play and part of the fun is to see how far your rock can travel. The next obvious step as the kids start to get older is Geocaching, which is everything like a treasure hunt without it being at the bottom of the ocean. Geocaching is done worldwide and through an app available on any GPS enabled device you can navigate to a specific set of GPS

coordinates which will help you locate the geocache, usually a container filled with some items that the person before has left in there and hidden.

By putting in the postcode of where you are all the geocaches in the area will be listed and then the fun starts when you try and work out where the treasure is hidden.

The rules state that if you take the item from the container you must leave something of equal value for the next person to find, then sign the logbook that is also in the container and re-hide it, making sure you take a photo and post it online.

Many families are addicted to geocaching, it’s a great way to spend time together and it’s a perfect activity for travelling families who are already out exploring, to add an extra layer of fun.

It is estimated there are now more than three million geocache locations in 190 countries.

Do you are your family geocache, or search for painted rocks? What sort of activities do you include in your exploring?

Customer testimonials: “Alice and I have just done a trip down the Strzelecki Track, over to Lake Eyre on the Oodnadatta Track, up the Birdsville Track and finished off by doing 600klms of dirt road from Middletown, out of Boulia, to Issisford. The Ozcape Charisma took it all in its stride, not a single problem”. - Jack “I am a single lady whose experience of camping was tenting. I was ready for a bit of luxury style travel within a do-able and safe set of parameters. That included being able to manage my rig by myself and I shied away from pop-up styles in the interests of security as I knew I was going to start this journey on my own. …... Features of Joe’s product that convince me I have made a great choice are: The layout is really efficient for the space available – the feeling is spacious not cramped. Finish is top shelf quality Utilities are well thought out and the infrastructure works well (in house battery system – protected from being totally drained, quality components suitable for the bumps and dust that will be encountered on the road)…….One example of quality that really makes a difference to me as a sole operator of the rig is the automatic legs. I have enjoyed setting up camp with the remote control in one hand, an ice cream in the other!” Erica D

CARAVANNING IN WINTER Like many full time caravanners, our plans have always been to ‘follow the sun’ and migrate north for the winter months. We simply cannot imagine setting up camp at any of the amazingly beautiful beaches along the southern coastline of Australia, and not being able to enjoy them to their full potential due to the colder weather. Originally from Queensland, we’re a bit soft when it comes to the cold – but we’ve found temperatures

along the Kununurra and surrounding Western Australia suburbs have been fairly consistent at mid- twenties to low- thirties since the beginning of winter, which have made for some blissful days exploring. If you do get caught out in wintery weather, there’s a little preparing you can do that can make you all the more comfortable – particularly if you’re travelling with kids!

PREPARING FOR WINTER ON THE ROAD First things first. You’ll need to cover your bases as far as clothing and appropriate sleeping covers. We’ve actually set up camp (when going off grid with our tents), and realised we forgot the thermal sleeping bags in the past! Even putting on every item of clothing we’d packed didn’t keep us warm enough to get any kind of quality sleep – and that certainly does not make for a fun next day. In our caravan we have a diesel heather for those chilly mornings, a few fleece blankets for the kids to put on top of their fitted sheet (under their bodies); or on top of their doonas. We even have a couple of hot water bottles which are great for when your toes just don’t seem to retain any warmth. Others opt for gas heaters, 12v electric blankets (yes – they do exist!) and thermal sleepwear. Even if you have none of these options, we’ve encountered people who simply run their oven for 15 or so minutes to generate some heat. During the day you’ll want to ensure you can layer your clothing to adjust along with the rise and fall of the temps. Other preparation we do for the winter months, is ensuring we stock up on some essentials from the closest supermarket. Think food items that allow for a boost in nutrition, but also to warm little bellies. Porridge for breakfast, soups and hot-pots for dinner. We grab spares in essential campfire necessities (firewood; firelighters; marshmellows and milo – for those hot choccies for the kids around the campfire), and top up supplies of the ‘germ’ killing kind. Think vitamin C; tissues; dettol wipes; Glen 20; hand sanitiser and the likes.

COLDER WEATHER Living the nomadic life, our plans are constantly changing as far as which direction we will head. We do our best to explore each area as fully as possible before moving on – and we have time on our side as far as being able to follow the weather. We research what there is to do, and plan day trips and hikes to get us out of the van and tire out the kids.

We have lazy days where we recoup physically and mentally – and have days devoted to business and school work. Just like home-life. On cooler days we seek out warmer activities where possible. Recently staying at El Questro Wilderness Station, we hit Zebedee Springs on one such morning and spent a glorious 2 or so hours relaxing in the thermal springs.

winter illness Distancing ourselves from the cooler weather does not mean we are free from the threat of flu or winter related viruses. Almost as soon as June 1 clicked over this year and winter commenced, we were exposed to Influenza A, which then passed through our ENTIRE family.

Trust me, this was NOT fun being in such a confined space and was the most brutal illness we’ve had while travelling and were out for a good 10 days. Wayne went a step further and also managed to end up with pneumonia on his lungs and required a hospital stay to help him get better!

TOP TIPS FOR WINTER ROAD LIFE • • • •

Decide on how you’ll stay warm in your caravan Close windows earlier in the day to keep in some warmth Layer up your clothing Glen 20 and Dettol wipes are A MUST for inside the caravan

• • • • •

Increase your intake of vitamin C and stay hydrated Alter your nutrition Get the flu shot!! Seek out weather dependant activities/ locations Be extra diligent with your hand hygiene!

CARAVANLPG & CAMPING & SAFETY INSURANCE

Safe and effective heating

When you buy a car, a house, a boat or any other type of major investment you immediately make sure your asset has insurance.

If you look at your policy, you will probably find that if your caravan or trailer comes loose and hits another car it won’t be covered.

But what about your caravan or RV?

So what sort of insurance do you need for a caravan.

residence the insurance industry is struggling to keep up with the changes. Many long term travellers find themselves getting incorrect advice or getting confused with what they need.

In a caravan, for the most part, it’s not that difficult. You can choose from portable 240v electric space heaters, 240v reverse cycle air-conditioning, or if you are mostly free camping you can look into some gas or diesel options. However, this is where it gets tricky and we will look at this in more details further down and consider the safety aspects of these. In a van, most these days come already fitted out with 240v reverse cycle aircon, which is great. You can set the temperature and it’s a safe and effective heating option. If you don’t have one and are looking to install, make sure it is installed by a professional electrician who will be aware of issues related to whether your van is a pop top or if the system requires some other supports, or if it will need to be fitted elsewhere in the van. The biggest downside with aircon is that, while it’s not impossible, it’s very difficult to run it unless you are connected to 240v power. For the many people with older set ups, who don’t want to go down the path of installing a reverse cycle system, a small portable space heater is often the cheapest and a fairly efficient option in the heating of the space. The biggest issue is in a van, where space is of the premium, you need to find somewhere on a bench or out of the way to put it. They also use a fair bit of power, so if you are using other appliances there is a fair chance you could trip the safety switch. Now we get to the tricky part of heating.

A flue-less gas space heater is one that does not have a flue to collect and exhaust to an outside area. Without this all the combustion products are released directly into the room it is heating, which could have fatal results. This means it is releasing pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. The water vapour it produces could also contribute to the growth of mould and dust mites. If you are using a flue-less gas space heater the WA Department of Industry, Regulation and Safety state that it is recommended: • Keep the room well ventilated. If the room is fitted with a gas bayonet fitting (quick connect device socket) to allow the connection of a flueless gas heater, then by law two permanent ventilation openings must be installed. The vents must connect to the outside of the building and one vent must be installed at low level and the other vent at high level. • The physical external dimensions of each vent should be not less than the equivalent of 310mm x 170mm (to provide for a minimum open area of 25,000 square mm based on the vent design having an open area of 48%). • Never use a flue-less gas space heater in a bedroom, bathroom or in a caravan. (Note: Flue-less gas space heaters are being phased out of use in child care centres and all types of schools, to avoid the lengthy exposure of children to the emissions produced).

When free camping, the heating options lean towards gas or diesel heating. Both are effective heating methods.

• Do not use the gas heater unless it has been certified for use by the Australian Gas Association or SAI Global (check for label or badge attached), or if the gas consumption of the heater exceeds 25MJ per hour.

However, under no circumstances should you use a flue-less gas space heater in an enclosed space. This means any tent, caravan, campervan, or even shed or garage.

• Make sure that air volume of the room in which the heater is used is at least 30 cubic metres (for example: 3.5m x 3.5m with a 2.4m high ceiling).

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the use of the gas space heater. Have each flue-less gas space heater serviced by a qualified person once every two years. A poorly maintained gas heater, together with inadequate ventilation, may contribute to high levels of pollutants. So what are the other options? There are many gas heating options that do have flues that allow for ventilation. It is recommended that you ensure you do your research to ensure it is safe for the space you have and is installed by a licensed gas fitter. You can use a gas heater however in open sided awnings, gazebos and out in the open which are perfect for winter camping and enjoying the stars on a cold night. You could also consider diesel heating, which do not require a licensed fitter to install, is fairly efficient and easy to fuel, as its generally the same fuel as most tow vehicles. However, diesel is messy and will stain if its spilt. The carbon deposits can also build up in the combustion chamber which will impact its performance. Diesel heaters need to be cleaned and maintained regularly, and they can be noisy and while legally anyone can install diesel heating systems it is always recommended to get professional advice to ensure you have the appropriate exhaust systems, which will ensure your heating works safely and effectively while also not letting dust in when travelling on dirt roads.

Wear and tear is generally not considered a reasonable claim. It will need to be because of a legitimate event. If you are in areas with extreme weather, check your policy, insurers may not pay out on a claim caused by extreme weather.

The best advice when considering caravan insurance, as with all insurance is to shop around. Speak to a few insurers and see what they offer and how it meets your individual needs. You really don’t need to be caught in a cyclone before you realise you aren’t covered for cyclone damage.

Revolutionising your b The crew at Tailfin are making waves in the boating industry. The development of the Tailfin technology is the biggest advancement in boating performance since the introduction of the outboard motor itself. Tailfin creates a suspension enhancement, which complements the modern-day boating performance. This means that you are able to fly through rough water without pounding down on every wave. It is a much safer, dryer, faster and more comfortable ride, meaning you can enjoy your boating experience more often, in all sea directions and conditions.

oating experience

Tailfin is a big deal. Not since the industry moved from using oars to a spinning prop propulsion has there been such a big technological development. Tailfin which is designed to save and free massive wasted prop energies, such as removing traditional prop thrust, directional steering and massive energy costs, and replaces them with reflective water flow and direct steering, freeing prop power. Daniel from Brisbane is a Tailfin convert. He said, “I originally fitted a Tailfin in January on a Tohatsu 50 horsepower 2 stroke and the installation was a piece of cake”.

“Since then I have replace it with a Suziki 60 horsepower 4 stroke 2018 model. The difference the Tailfin makes to my boat is simply incredible. It takes out the pounding of the boat and increases the turning performance 100 per cent. It also allows the boat to plane at a much lower speed, which is very handy when using the boat in the surf”. “The Tailfin increases the performance when running with the swell dramatically and it allows you to turn while going down the wave with full control, due to its rudder like design, which makes the boat feel much safer. It also stops the bow of the boat lifting when heading into the wind and chop, which in turn makes for a softer riding boat and allows for a much faster cruising speed”.

Daniel said, “I have owned quite a few boats with different versions of cavitation plates fitted but this one, albeit slightly odd looking, is by far the best performing unit I have experienced. I will always use a tailfin on my future boats”. Daniel also has high praise for the customer service and said, “It’s an added bonus that Peter is so easy to deal with. He even replaced my Tailfin free of cost after an altercation with the outboard and a tree while reversing out of my mates driveway”. “I couldn’t recommend Peter and his Tailfin with higher regard”, he said. Tailfin Director, Peter De Jong said, “the Tailfin has unlocked a really exciting new type of innovation that adds a much higher performance”.

“Tailfin is much more than a Hydrofoil, it’s an early correction stabilisation system, reflective steering frees the prop thrust, directional steering freeing power adds a stern traction response, early correction rudder not only lightens the steering wheel, self levels the hull, holds the bow up for higher contact to the next wave, shortens your sideways travel distance, speeding up recovery, adds a type of suspension giving you a much dryer, more comfortable ride through rougher water in all sea directions”. “Tailfin harnesses the power of the lateral water flow above the cavitation plate that major brand Hydrofoils can’t do”.

Tailfin will: • Revolutionizing Boating Performance. • Add suspension to your Boat. • Early correction (Selflevelling enhances suspension) • Additional Water flow. • Power Steering. • Reverse the outward or inward leaning for both Cats and Vee Hulls. • New boating lifestyles. • A new boating performance previously impossible. • 22 extra boating improvements to all major brands. (now lowperformance Hydrofoils

He said, “the boat rides a water rail like it’s on the rails”.

Bush’n it on a budget

Escaping the winter and heading to Far North Queensland The best thing about being in a caravan in winter? It doesn’t have to be winter! Let’s face it living in a tin can in the cold isn’t much fun, we found out this one morning in Alice Springs where we were at an unpowered campground with no gas or diesel heater and it was -1! SO like many other travellers do we choose to head north and seek out some winter SUN! Far North Queensland is where we choose to spend our ‘winter’ in the van so here’s a list of some of our top spots and attractions up north.

CAPE YORK (THE TIP) You can’t get further north than this! Cape York is well worth the extra effort when in Far North Queensland. For us it was like a holiday on a holiday, ditching the van on heading of camping was an awesome adventure. The Cape is great fun, with its tricky 4WD tracks and bush camping. The highlight for us was of course reaching ‘the tip’ of Australia but the beautiful (safe swimming) waterfalls came a close second. Eliot and twin falls were stunning! Plus the campground is just a short stroll to the falls so they make for a perfect afternoon of cooling off or morning dip.

CAIRNS AREA Cairns is an awesome city! As well as being the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef it has some other great attractions like the Cairns Esplanade lagoon, the lagoon is a fab free-swimming pool right on the esplanade. It’s a beautiful safe place to swim on a hot day in Cairns! There’s also the famous Cairns Markets, everyone talks about Cairns markets and they are pretty wicked. They are right in the centre of the city and have fresh local produce, yummy street food and homemade goods, they also host some night markets! A half an hour drive out of Cairns you will find Barron Falls, Barron Falls is in Kuranda (which is a great town to visit) and is well worth a stop! The falls are beautiful, and the drive up there also gives of some awesome views. You can even catch the sky rail up there. You can’t swim at the Barron falls but just seeing them is good enough!

ATHERTON TABLELANDS The Atherton Tablelands is full of some amazing and totally FREE attractions, from rainforest walks to a wicked waterfall circuit which includes the beautiful Millaa Millaa falls to some more unique attractions like the Yungaburra Platypus viewing area, we were lucky enough to see two Platypus even with loud children! They say only around 10% of Australians have seen a Platypus in the wild so it’s worth the stop and they’re pretty special to see. There is also nice walk along the river too and you can try and spot some more. The highlight of the Atherton Tablelands for us was the Curtain Fig tree, this tree is AMAZING! And it showcases how amazing Mother Nature is. Also look out for tree kangaroos when you’re here!

MISSION BEACH Mission beach is a little slice of paradise. We loved it here and ended up staying longer than planned. Mission beach is a small laid-back town with a beautiful beach that gives you awesome views of Dunk and the Hitchinbrook islands. Mission beach has a very tropical feel, with the wet tropic’s rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef meeting and creating a gorgeous environment. Mission beach markets are on every Sunday and are definitely worth checking out. Also, a drive down to Bingal bay is a must you won’t be disappointed with the views!

Whether you choose to chase the sun or do some winter camping make sure you well prepared for the conditions! Safe Travels, Bush‘n it on a budget. Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/bushnitonabudget/ Email: bushnitonabudget@hotmail.com

SWIMMING WITH GIANTS

Recently I had the opportunity to tick off a major bucket list item.

However, there are a small band of people for whom this is their everyday.

A last-minute decision was made to head to Coral Bay for a long weekend and I found myself eye to eye with the biggest fish in the ocean.

Alex Kydd was the photographer on my boat and in the short time he has been a marine photographer he has been gaining a huge amount of respect and a growing base of admirers for the images he captures, not just of whale sharks, but of all the animals he encounters on the Ningaloo Reef.

In the three and half years that we’ve been on the road, swimming with whale sharks is unquestionably the most awe inspiring of everything so far. Being so close to these gentle giants, under an ocean that was pounding and throwing us around is an experience that reinterprets perspectives. For the vast majority of us, having the opportunity to do something of this scale is a once in a lifetime event.

Alex is in the water five days a week with Coral Bay Eco Tours and I recently had a chance to chat to Alex about what it’s like for him to be on the reef swimming with whale sharks, humpback whales, tiger sharks, manta rays, turtles and countless other marine animals each and every day.

Alex has a background in Marine Science and said he has always had a fascination with the ocean and never went in the water without a camera. The jump to full time marine photographer was an easy one for him and since 2016 he has been based in Coral Bay working as a wildlife photographer on whale shark and humpback whale tours. He said, “I capture whatever we see on the tour throughout the day, whether that’s whale sharks, manta rays, all different species of other sharks, we see humpback whales out there, everyday you’re coming home with something really new, something exciting, and you’re also sharing it with some really enthusiastic people. People from around the world who book on these tours, they want to see the reef and you get to share it with them and show them why you love it”.

“Ningaloo Reef is known for its mega-fauna, so big animals like the whale sharks, humpback whales, manta rays but there’s so much out there. We go out there everyday and there’s always going to be one little thing that surprises you or really takes your breath away”. Alex said he has a couple of experiences that have been stand out for him.

and find out what it is. This is super exciting because you don’t know what you are getting in with, some sort of animal you’ve never seen before. When I got in the water it was a fever, or a school of cow-nosed rays, which are like a like a sting ray. They are swimming through the water column, and there’s maybe about thirty of them all wrapped up in a bunch. I’d never seen them before.

He said, “recently we were on the boat and we looked down from the top of the boat and we saw this big flash of white. The Skipper and deck hand told me to get in the water and go

They were something that I’d heard of, but they do come to Ningaloo Reef, and I was able to get some really cool footage, some really cool photos, which a lot of people loved”.

“They got shared on social media and shared around the world. I asked a lot of researchers which species of cow-nosed rays they are, but there’s not a lot known about them. It’s actually really difficult to ID them. There are only two species that are known to occur in Australian waters so it’s still unknown unless I get a sample of one of them”. “Another story that really sticks out is swimming with tiger sharks. We get a lot of tiger sharks here on Ningaloo Reef and I’m fortunate enough to get a chance to swim with them sometimes”.

“The first time I did it I had adrenaline going, I’d never done this before, still a bit scared. But just obviously doing it a lot. I’ve swum with hundreds of tiger sharks in the last year. Most encounters are very brief because they are really shy. But there are a couple of stand-out moments, like when I counted about thirteen tiger sharks that were feeding on a turtle carcass and I was lucky enough to get in there. I swam with a friend who I really trusted in the water and he’s watching my back and we’re just documenting what was happening”.

stems from fear. Tiger sharks seem to be quite shy in their nature and they obviously need to be given a lot of respect, they are not puppy dogs, but they’re not the monsters that we’ve all been told that they are. Alex said the best part of his job is getting to share the water with people everyday. “There’s nothing better than everyone on the boat super stoked about what they’ve seen and they’re happy about swimming, whether it’s been whale sharks, humpback whales, manta rays, and if you can get some cool photos along the way its just a massive bonus. It’s a bucket list animal and it might be something that people only do once in their life, and you get to do it everyday with them, and that’s a really cool experience”. Swimming with whale sharks has certainly been something I’ve longed to do for some time and thanks to Coral Bay Eco Tours, I had the opportunity, and thanks to Alex for capturing the day so incredibly.

“The tiger sharks had no interest in us, obviously their food is right there and as long as you don’t get in the way and become competition”. Another cool experience was a time we saw tiger sharks feeding on a whale carcass last year. I managed to get some really cool close up shots of a tiger shark actually with its nose on my friends camera. This big four metre shark just cruised up, had a look and then just swims off”. “I don’t tell everyone to be jumping in the water with tiger sharks but I think what we’ve all been told is a lot of misinformation and that generally

A WHOLE NEW CARAVANNING LIFE

I have been caravanning or camping all my life. We would travel to Fraser Island yearly, sometimes twice yearly, we would travel to various parts around Australia most school holidays leaving a week before and returning sometimes after school resumed. It seemed only natural to me to live this life as an adult, marry someone that also loved the lifestyle and bring our kids up knowing the amazing world of adventure.

What also seemed as normal as brushing your teeth in the morning, was to embrace “happy hour” and when packing for trips the “booze” was just as important in the process to getting away as the grocery shop. Holidays became about earning the right to spend 2 weeks relaxed kicked back on a chair for as long as possible each day and drink in hand.

Not to mention the platters of cheese and biccys, fish and chips for lunch, bacon and eggs for breakfast. It all was “normal” right!! That was until 6 months ago, when hubby and I completely gave up drinking. For no other reason than to experiment with our health and wellness and see what, if anything we were missing. Never in a million years would I have thought either of us would ever get this far into this process, however here we are and caravanning, travel and life has never looked so freaking amazing.

When I say hubby gave up beers, I am not talking a beer here and there kind of guy, I am talking full blown carton could disappear and we won’t go into how quickly this could go either!!! And this is totally classed in society as acceptable and normal social behaviour. Well, we are now on the outside looking in, we are totally living life alcohol free! OMG I know right, I have to pinch myself when I even say it, like who does that, we don’t even have family or friends that could class as non-drinkers, don’t get me wrong our family and friends are super supportive of our decision, but we are riding this wave SOLO.

6 months in and our holidaying and caravanning has changed, and so much for the better:-

local produce and purchasing for our lunch and dinners is our go to

1. We eat healthy all the time – even on holidays and we don’t feel we are missing a thing

5. Finding the best acai bowls in town to add to our list, also gets us out of bed

2. We wake before the sun rises most mornings – and don’t feel or want to sleep in and miss the best part of the day 3. Exploring our surroundings and the region is actually a thing for us now, not just the perimeter of where we are staying 4. Focusing on amazing cuts of meat and

6. We tend to leave the town empty of soda water and sparkling water 7. Board games, conversation and cards has replaced our drinking holiday habit 8. Finding bed by 8pm (or if I am completely honest sometimes 5pm) to watch some reruns is something we LOVE doing and our normal these days

Benefits 1. NO HANG OVER 2. No brain fog 3. No moods 4. Better parents, partners and company 5. Better conversation 6. Healthier, fitter and stronger 7. More energy 8. Quality time

this), however here we are and we would not change a thing.

Never did we feel this life was in reach, like seriously from the time you are 18 all you know is to socially drink. Even if it would have been in reach, never did we think life would ever be this much fun without a drink in hand.

Eat – Sleep – Travel – Train, we are living our dream.

Yeah yeah we hear you, saying how boring we are (don’t forget we also once thought

They say don’t knock something until you have tried it!! We totally knocked it for so many years, and here we are not trying it but living it. We are living our best life and this works for us. It not for everyone, but it definitely is what makes us bounce out of bed every day.
