The Heart Of The South Burnett

L

ocated a short two and a half hour drive from the Sunshine Coast, the South Burnett is a region full of incredible food, wines and outdoor adventures. We took a tour of the Proston area and discovered a few gems that will keep the family busy and enrich your next holiday. Proston is situated a short 30 Minutes drive from Murgon or Wondai, nestled strategically in the heart of the south Burnett. Basing yourself in Proston allows a short commute too many of The South Burnetts most prized activities and sights. We based ourselves in the heart of the village, and found many of the South Burnetts top tourist attractions were only a short drive away.

DUST Y HILL VINEYARD A day at Dusty Hill Vineyard

D

usty Hill Vineyard was our last stop, and was definately worth the wait.

Located a 45 minute drive from Proston Village this stunning winery is nestled in the heart of the Barambah Valley. You will be spoilt for choice, with several other vineyards in close proximity. We decided to lunch at the Irish Tavern at Dusty Hill Vineyard, the food was exceptional. Sitting on the covered deck watching the ducks swim on the dam, we were happy to let the afternoon slip by. The complex has a tasting room, to sample the Dusty Hill wine selection, or you can shop in the Chef & Winemakers Pantry. Offering local artisan products, you will no doubt find something that catches your eye. Handmade soy candles or a beautiful selction of locally made pickles, relsihes and cheeses. Additional upgrades in stage 1, include changes to the arrival plaza and reception, the pool, lawn and the redevelopment of the hotel restaurant, we will be diving into 2020 with stage 1 of the development complete. The hotel restaurant will be redesigned and rebranded The Rocks, and will incorporate a restaurant, bar and pool club

element aimed at enhancing guest stay and attracting both a local and visitor market. Modern Australian cuisine served at the ocean’s edge, will prove to be a feast for the senses. Stage 2 of the development will commence in the new year (2020) and focuses on refreshing the resort rooms. With soft furnishing upgrades, improved environmental practices and upgraded WiFi connectivity throughout, the one thing that will remain unchanged are the stunning views!

Coral Sea Marina Resort is consistently working towards reducing their environmental footprint in a bid to protect and preserve the incredible marine environment of their beautiful backyard, the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Staying true to their environmental policy, as

well as the spirit of the Whitsundays, the marina is keen to promote bigger adventures, yet with much smaller ‘footprints’. This signed pledge is acknowledgement of the need to proactively address the damaging reality of single use plastic and publicly show the genuine commitment the marina has towards initially reducing unnecessary waste, and ultimately eliminating it throughout the marina by 2025. Other environmental initiatives currently underway across the marina resort: •

Elimination of single use plastic straws in all resort dining & events outlets Installation of 3 hydrations stations and sale of stainless environmental water bottles

RECYCLED BUSH HOUSE

We are Allen and Clair Mieluk, an environmentally conscious couple in our early 30’s. The project is located in the Manning Valley, Mid-north coast of NSW. In need of a creative outlet, we decided to have a go at building our own weekender to take time out from the demands of everyday life. The challenge was to ensure it could be off grid, environmentally friendly and under $5,000.

We have both grown up holidaying in the Australian Bush so it is close to our hearts. Clair’s brother and some good friends have had to help us with big jobs like putting up the 2 storey frames and fitting the pre-loved roof. We would love to be able to share it with like minded family and friends once it is complete and share our story to show that sustainable living really is in everyone’s capability.

TIPS ON FINDING MATERIALS: Everybody knows someone at some point who’s either built or renovated a property. Ask these people if they have any left over paint, timber or building materials, even a box of screws they have no need for and are happy to give you. Once people know about the project you’re doing, you find they want to help you. Builders or tradies always have leftover materials from jobs. They would rather someone pick it up for them then have to pay to take it to the tip themselves, this is another good source. We have collected excess tiles, waterproofing, paint and windows this way.

TIPS ON THE DESIGN PROCESS. The design of the house was dictated by the materials we knew we could source. The size of the floor was built to the steel frame we acquired, and we decided to build up as we had access to long lengths of timber, enough for a 2 storey dwelling. If you don’t know how to do something e.g. tiling, turn to the online world. We have used youtube and google to overcome building techniques we hadn’t tried before. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Often natural or recycled materials won’t be perfect or you won’t have quite enough for the job. Half the fun is working out how you can make it work with what you have, like a puzzle. Remember the bigger picture of what you are achieving and have fun doing it!

As we were designing the feature for this awesome couple to tell their story and showcase their beautiful bush retreat, I made contact with them to apologise for the delay in getting the concept back to them. During this communication with Allen and Clair, they informed me that they had in fact lost their home away from home to the bush fires that have been sweeping across the country. In that instance my heart broke, my stomach churned and I was broken for them and many others who have lost loved ones, homes, and personal items and it brought the reality of this even closer to me and my little family and the pure devastation many are going through.

Allen and Clair went on to tell me “we are the few lucky ones who don’t need anything and have amazing support. We acknowledge that life in the bush is just that way unfortunately, and have made our peace with it They wanted us to still run the article as their perspective on sustainable living has not changed and are looking forward to rebuilding in the future although it may be some time away. We will be running a follow up article as they start the clean-up mid-January to see what they can salvage and we would love to assist how we can to not only help with their rebuild but others also.

Take you’re balls to the top shelf Every family and, or group of friends have a few Christmas traditions and rituals. How the presents are opened, a particular dish, a routine to the day or how chores are allocated. These can be passed on for many generations. One of mine is my sister, Jan, rum balls. I can't remember a Christmas without one and when I moved away from home, I carried on this tradition. Along with my niece this year, so I hear, happy thoughts. It was one tradition I could manage as over the years I have worked more Christmas days than not, and in hospitality, it's a very busy time. It’s a simple recipe, that has over the years provided a lot of joy and taste bud sensations. One of those recipes you look at and think, really, can they taste that good? Well I assure you they do. It does have rum in it after all. Maybe this is what started my love of this diverse spirit. The taste of Christmas. This year my traditional rum ball making was in full swing. Made early enough I was able to share them with friends and dabble a bit myself, saving some for the special day, just.

I never really thought to advance from the original recipe, they were the taste of my family Christmas, my childhood. Why would you want to mess with that? Well, 540 varieties of rum on the back wall at our restaurant, that's why. How could I not, I mean really?? So I decided to take my balls to the top shelf and Angostura 1824 is the rum that spoke to me. A smooth, yet full flavoured rum, with hints of vanilla and subtle tannins from the roughly 12 years it spends in charred American oak casks. Cocoa and almond notes are also in the flavour profile of this rum, which most definitely is designed to be drunk neat.... certainly not as a cooking rum. BUT, it is the festive season and how much do a box of fine truffles cost. Go for it! The flavours of this fine rum mixed with chocolate and coconut are a match made in heaven. Of course a snifter on the side is highly recommend. So the humble but very tasty rum ball has been taken to a new level. A cross between a rum ball and a divine truffle with a simple twist. So easy to make. An absolute perfect delight for the new year’s celebrations and throughout the coming year. So 2017 is the year of the Angostura rum ball, when any celebration occurs, or any reason really. A very simple recipe taken to new heights. The height of the top shelf. The original book and recipe

Recipe Ingredients

Method

2 packets chocolate ripple cookies

1/2 tin of condensed milk (a little more may be needed if to dry)

1. Place all ingredients into a food processor and blend to a moist but firm consistency. If not sure pop a ball in the freezer for 5 minutes to check it sets firm. Taste, if needs more rum to your liking, go for it. If too wet add more crumb or coconut. Roll into small size ball, bit smaller than a ping pong and coat in Dutch cocoa powder. 2. Makes 28-30, depending on size rolled. If you don’t have a food processor, blend cookies in any blender to fine crumb, add other ingredients and mix by hand.

1/2 cup desiccated coconut

2-3 (go on make it 3, I do) shots of angostura 1824. Which is 6090mls

3. If making for the little ones, mix all together except the rum, take some mix out and have 2 batches. Kiddie friendly and 18 plus

1/4 cup Dutch cocoa

So good, so, let the good balls roll.

4. These will keep in the fridge for quite a while, if you can let them.

Gift ideas for Christmas on the road Christmas on the road is a bit different to Christmas in a house, along with the kids ‘Santa’s list’ you have space and weights to contend with. When you’ve been on the road for an extended amount of time, you get used to living with just the bare necessities so remember you don’t have to buy lots of things when shopping for gifts! We have some gift ideas that we think will keep everyone happy whilst keeping clutter to a minimum.

AN EXPERIENCE What’s better than a gift? A memory! This is my favourite Christmas gift idea of all. There are so many things you’re probably already planning on doing whilst travelling, why not use Christmas as an excuse to gift that and save money in the future? An attraction entrance such as a zoo, aquarium or theme park make a great Christmas present for the kids, whilst an experience such as a helicopter ride, local day trip, Whitsundays tour or national park pass is perfect for the whole family to enjoy. You could also book into a caravan park with the ‘works’ such as waterparks, bouncy pillows and kids clubs as a gift for the little ones. Everyone will remember these days with loved ones whereas not everyone remembers every gift they receive.

NEEDS OVER WANTS Yes, it may sound a bit ‘boring’ but buy each other things you need over things you want! Camping gear such as sleeping bags and camp chairs that may have been well used could be replaced with some nice new ones. Also, things like thongs, swimmers, snorkelling gear and torches ALWAYS come in handy and constantly get used. Kids especially ruin clothes so easily whilst living on the road so a few new (cheap) outfits never go a miss!

A ‘SPLASH OUT’ GIFT There are plenty of big-ticket items that are of use whilst living on the road. If you really want to treat a family member you could consider one of them. Photography on the road is an important thing, or course you want to document your travelling experience! So, a professional camera, go pro or a drone can be a great present for a loved one. Other ideas could be a portable fridge or a new BBQ for the chef in the family (how else are you going to cook a yummy Christmas lunch?). Things likes paddle boards, kayaks and surfboards are also great things to have with you whilst travelling this amazing country so could be a special gift for someone and a brilliant way to spend some of your days. My personal favourite idea for splashing out and treating a loved one is to gift them a flight/trip home at some point to visit family and friends.

USEFUL ITEMS Other useful items that can be gifted for Christmas are things for your camping set up such as recovery gear, car seat covers (especially if you have kids or pets), UHF and spotlights. These things are always useful, and some used on a daily basis. Clothing such as a good jacket, hiking boots and a quality backpack are something that you use regularly when on the road so use Christmas as a chance to stock up on these important things. One very useful gift and something we use often is a caravan park membership, this will save the recipient plenty of money over their time travelling.

Even though gifts are great remember presence is more important than presents so enjoy the Christmas period with your family and hopefully some new camp mates! Being on the road for Christmas can make you miss family and friends that little bit more than usual but just think of the experience you are having and the memories you will create! No matter where you are and what you’re doing this festive period we hope you have a wicked Christmas and a fantastic new year!

A TOWN OF FIRSTS Story and photos by Glenys Gelzinis www.caravancorrespondent.com Instagram @glenysgelzinis

The Murray River at Goolwa and bridge to Hindmarsh Island

T

here’s something very special about this South Australian town that sits at the end of the River Murray before it flows out to the Southern Ocean. There’s a peaceful serenity that flows with the same tranquility as Australia’s biggest river that it sits on. Goolwa is in the enviable position of being between the river and the sea and opportunities to enjoy this laid back town are plentiful.

FIRST INLAND RIVER PORT Goolwa was once a thriving river port at the end of the Murray River. It was Australia’s first river port and the only place in Australia where paddle steamers could dock and be met by a steam train to take the goods they carried inland.

Remarkably today you can still travel by both these modes of transport with Goolwa being one of only two places in the world where you can have a steam to steam experience. A cruise on the PS Oscar W takes passengers along the Murray to the river mouth, along the way seeing the birdlife and wildlife that call this area home. You can then hop on the SteamRanger heritage train and take a scenic journey along the southern coastline to Victor Harbor and return.

RIVER AND SEA South Australian’s have long known the benefits of visiting Goolwa as a popular holiday destination and especially with those who enjoy water sports. The river is a popular destination for sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking and generally just cruising in any watercraft. Charter boat cruises are also available enabling everyone the chance to see the Murray Mouth and the pristine Coorong National Park beyond it. The Murray Mouth is a hot spot for fishers to land a big mulloway or salmon and for land based fishing and 4WD enthusiasts it is accessible by a ten kilometre stretch of sandy beach which begins from behind the Goolwa Beach Surf Lifesaving Club.

Weather conditions can sometimes force the closure of access to the mouth but usually the drive is one that even the less experienced 4WD owner can tackle with sensible precautions. Deflating tyres in softer sand patches, especially closer to the mouth will enable easy access. During peak summer time and on weekends the beach drive can be busy with people keen to drive this iconic stretch of sand known as Sir Richard Peninsula, and it can be particularly busy during cockle season from November through to the end of May each year.

MURRAY MOUTH Goolwa Beach cockles, also known as Pipis, are much sought after for both the table and for bait. Cockle gatherers can easily be spotted doing the distinctive ‘cockle twist’ in the shallows. Size and daily limits are set for collecting these versatile little molluscs and it’s a fun and easy task to collect them. The beach is known for its big waves so surf fishing all along the beach is popular as is surfing when the conditions are right. Not only is the Murray Mouth popular with human visitors, but also with long nosed fur seals which can frequently be seen basking and hunting for fish too.

Large groups of pelicans call this region home and it’s a popular breeding ground for the birds. For another perspective of the Murray Mouth it’s worth taking a drive over to Hindmarsh Island which is accessible by a bridge from the Goolwa wharf area. Once on the island follow signs to the Murray

Mouth and if you make it on a Saturday or Sunday you enjoy freshly caught and cooked fish from the Coorong Café at Sugars Beach. This food van operates during spring and summer time and is popular with locals and visitors alike for eating al fresco while watching the river traffic.

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST CITTASLOW TOWN This relaxed outdoor lifestyle is exactly what Goolwa is renowned for and just one of the reasons behind the town proudly bearing the title of Australia’s first Cittaslow town. This slow city concept originated in Italy with the idea that towns with a population of under 50,000 live by a charter of principals to be included in this movement. Amongst other criteria it includes encouraging local culture and traditions, supporting local producers and working with the community to live a healthy lifestyle in a sustainable environment, all of which fits Goolwa like a glove. To visit Goolwa and slip into the lifestyle is good way to see the Cittaslow mission in action as it’s all about taking time to bring together a sustainable community. A thriving art community is also abundantly evident with a number of art galleries and craft shops displaying and selling locally made works with more on offer every Sunday when a market is held by the wharf.

Birdlife at Goolwa wharf area Long nosed fur seals

The first and third Sunday markets are typically full of artisan products, bric-a-brac, homemade produce and plants and on the second and fourth Sundays a farmers market takes place with more of an emphasis on locally farm grown and produced food. Both markets are worth a visit and you’re guaranteed to leave with a full shopping basket and belly. There is also a huge amount of public art to be found including sculptures, wall murals, mosaic pieces and a real pride in the open spaces, parks and gardens. The latest arty edition to the town is a concrete and brightly mosaic tiled ‘Friendship Seat’ which encourages visitors to sit and enjoy the rose garden and surroundings with friends or just slow down to appreciate the surroundings and watch the passing traffic.

Goolwa train station

Summer is the perfect time to visit Goolwa with plenty of events to suit all members of the family.

On Sundays the Goolwa Aquatic Club holds sailing dinghy racing events as well as conducting learn to sail days.

The Goolwa Wharf Market is held on the first and third Sunday every month and every Sunday during January.

Take a cruise on the Oscar W Paddle Steamer on weekends departing from the Goolwa Wharf precinct.

Goolwa Beach is patrolled by members of the Goolwa Surf Life Saving Club between 12pm - 5pm every Saturday and Sunday, and all public holidays until the end of the Easter long weekend.

There are a number of art galleries and gift shops open most days throughout the year and public parks in the town and along the river banks are cool and green places to enjoy a picnic or some takeaway.

The Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club will be holding twilight races every Friday night and some Saturdays with Goolwa Regatta Week happening from 18-26 January 2020.

CHRISTMAS IN A CARAVAN 8 steps to keeping the magic alive for your kids while travelling the countryside. Words and Images by Kool Kampers

As any travelling family would tell you, living in a caravan is much the same as living in a house… just on a waaaay smaller scale! We’ve put together 8 easy steps to keep the magic alive for your kids this Christmas.

01

GET YOUR KIDS AN ‘ELF ON THE SHELF’.

A fairly new craze, and one that can help with the kids’ behaviour in the lead up to Christmas. These ‘elves’ report back to Santa on behaviour. Now, you may be thinking that there is only so many places you can put an elf in a caravan… but that’s where you will have to get creative! He could be hanging from the fridge handle; stuck in the kitchen draw; falling asleep on the couch with the remote and a small bowl of nibbles at his lap; hanging from the bunks; getting himself stuck on some of the kids decorations (see point #2).. If you’re so inclined, pintrest and the likes have literally hundreds of elf on the shelf ideas that you could attempt to replicate inside your caravan.

02

ALLOW THE KIDS TO JOIN IN WITH MAKING SOME CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS.

Think Christmas origami like reindeers, paper chains with Christmas drawings on them, and their own handmade baubles for your tree. You can write letters to Santa together and pop them up with your decorations to be sure Santa can see them as he does the rounds on Christmas Eve!

03

SEARCH K-MART OR VARIETY STORES FOR A SMALLER CHRISSY TREE FOR INSIDE YOUR VAN.

Or depending on your location, purchase a bigger tree for outside under your awning! With

literally hundreds of options, you’re bound to find something to fit your size and budget constraints! If you happen to be nowhere near a Kmart, then why not MAKE your own tree? We’ve seen many trees that families have ‘handmade’ using gear from inside their caravans like brooms or sticks they’ve found from the landscape around them! The more creative you get, the more memorable it will be!

04

PUT UP SOME FAIRY LIGHTS!

Let’s face it. Fairy lights make everything seem fancier! You can find some trendy and cheap options in both solar and 12v varieties that don’t suck too much power! Think along the lines of string lights, flashing globes or Christmas specific coloured LED strip lights to ensure your camping set up is one of the most festive around.

05

PLAN OUT YOUR PRESENTS!

The excitement of opening gifts is something children never tire of – however in a caravan, space is obviously limited. We still hang the kids Christmas stockings up, so tend to purchase a few ‘fillers’ such as chocolate, lollies and a few smaller gifts they can reach easily without having to wake us adults up for on Christmas morning! Other presents are planned around practical items the kids may need for our travels. Think things along the lines of scrapbooks; journals; fishing shirts and gear; a new hat or clothes; goggles or snorkelling gear; sunnies; a helmet and scooter or skateboard; board games; walkie talkies; new drink bottle or hiking gear; pool toys; Frisbee; beach towel; books; headphones; dvds; campchair – You get the idea, I’m sure. With space and budget a determining factor for each individual family, just be sure any large items actually have somewhere they can be stored safely in the van before handing over your cash.

06

PRE-WRAP ANY GIFTS

Now, if you happen to be nowhere near the shops, why not hide the presents inside those dark coloured garbage bags and tuck them away from little eyes under the main bed? If wasting paper on wrapping presents isn’t your favourite thing to do, you could try scarves and towels or alfoil instead – this will still give the kids that ‘unwrapping’ excitement.

07

CREATE A CARAVAN CHRISTMAS EVE RITUAL TOGETHER

This could be as simple as watching a Christmas movie together, sipping on hot chocolate, or perhaps playing some Christmas games by the fire with some festive music on in the background is more your thing. Let the kids help decide on a ritual.

08

LEAVE OUT SOMETHING FOR SANTA AND HIS REINDEER

Last but not least, keep the Christmas magic alive by letting your kids help you leave a treat out for Santa and his reindeer before they tuck in for the night. We usually leave homemade biscuits and milk out for Santa and some carrots and a bowl of water for the reindeer – but you can leave out beer, or whatever you want! Wishing you all a Safe and Happy Christmas – wherever you may be camped up!

Australia is fortunate to have some of the best waterways in the world for boating and the Boating Industry Association Ltd (BIA) is committed to the care and sustainability of the aquatic environment. Boating is best enjoyed in a clean and healthy environment, and the industry is a strong advocate of measures and controls to enhance the quality of the environment. The boating public observe the quality of the marine environment first-hand and are positioned to play an active role in protecting it. A world-wide consumer survey has shown that the ‘millennial’ generation (born 19811996) value sustainability when making consumer choices. The BIA recognises the

environment is an important aspect that is of keen interest to younger generations. Boating is a way of life for many Australian families and it is estimated that 5 million people participate in some form of boating each year; the vast majority of which occurs in family runabouts and small sail, and paddle craft. As it currently stands, and not to forget those in our community who are less fortunate, Australians are collectively wealthier, living longer and better educated than ever before; and are settling in coastal areas for the lifestyle benefits which include boating. The Federal Government says more than 85 per cent of the population live within 50km of the coast.

Little wonder almost 1 in 5 households in some States can have a boat or watercraft. The industry continues to move with the times and respond to market demand. Powerboats have increasingly lower carbon monoxide emissions and improved fuel efficiency. Advances in technology have led to engines, such as the new breed of clean technology outboards, that are increasingly quiet, with some producing barely audible noise at idle. The market is responding to consumers who are looking to invest in clean and efficient technology; reducing their burden on the environment, and which are inexpensive to run. There is also the emergence of electric-powered boats which produce zero emissions and virtually zero noise. This is all a far cry from the old twostroke outboards that were known to emit relatively high levels of noise and smoke.

Personal watercraft are the fastest growing sector of powered vessels with 76,000 now registered. These craft have also undergone a transformation to 4 stroke engines which are much quieter, produce less emissions and the latest models facilitate on-water braking. Boats provide a relatively low-impact opportunity to access and explore the environment when compared with the significantly higher impact (eg., roads, pathways and rail corridors) necessitated by the use of other modes of transport such as motor vehicles, trains, and even bicycles and foot traffic in popular areas. Responsible use of paddle, power and sail boats can provide a unique opportunity to access the environment and to leave no visible signs when compared with virtually any land-based mode of transport.

Vessel waste containment and treatment systems are improving all the time, especially with installation of sewage holding tanks and pumpout facilities for boats. Marine coatings used for anti-fouling on the hulls of vessels are also improving all the time. Marinas and slipways now employ environmental systems to prevent pollutants from entering the waterways. With contained hardstand facilities at marinas for boat maintenance, rubbish collection and recycling facilities and the modernisation of boats with holding tanks to comply with environmental legislation there has been a dramatic improvement in water quality and preventative environmental practices. In Australia, 89% of marinas, provide boaters with information about environmentally responsible boating practices and 91% practice recycling of paper, plastic, glass, metal and batteries.

The Marina Industry Association has also committed to removing single-use plastics from its marina / shipyard / business by 2025 by encouraging members to take a pledge of action. BIA supports the principle to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of single use plastics in our industry.

BIA encourages members, stakeholders and the public to observe the following: •

Always dispose of litter appropriately ashore

Choose sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics which can foul the marine environment and endanger marine life

If you have a marine toilet, consider responsible capture and disposal systems such as a holding tank and do not discharge untreated effluent in enclosed waters or near any aquaculture operations.

Get to know your boat – learn about efficient boating, how to get the most out of your engine and how to dispose of waste products responsibly such as oil and fuel. One litre of oil can pollute a million litres of water, whilst chemicals used to treat sewage can be toxic to marine life.

Be aware of your environment and the restrictions on boating in the area. Try to limit noise and exhaust emissions wherever possible, by keeping your engine well serviced and considering more sustainable technology such as electric propulsion and biodegradable oils

Help stop the spread of invasive species. The key to preventing marine pests from being spread by your vessel is good maintenance and having effective antifouling.

Minimise the impact of anti-foulings. Choose the lowest levels of biocides that will do the job or consider using Silicone

We share the waterways with amazing wildlife but the presence of boats does not have to result in disturbance to local wildlife. If handled responsibly, there can be little to no disturbance.

Anchoring is part of boating but some seabed habitats, such seagrass, are known as the rainforests of the marine world, may be sensitive to, or at risk

from, anchoring. There are simple things you can do to protect such habitat such as take care to anchorage clear of areas where there is seagrass or fragile reef. •

Water efficiency is to be supported especially due to pressures from climate change and population growth. Actions include purchasing appliances that rate well in water efficiency, install water saving devices such as tap and shower aerators, routinely checking for and fixing any leaks.

Energy efficiency is to be supported. Consider solar and wind energy where you can, and alternatives such as electric and bio-diesel engines. Keeping your hull clean and propulsion systems efficient to reduce fuel consumption.
