To determine whether a guest is a Botanical Repair ™ guest, conduct a consultation that determines whether the guest needs repair, hydration or both.

DOES HAIR NEED REPAIR?

Ask the guest the following questions during the consultation:

• Do you color or chemically treat your hair?

• Does your hair break or split?

• Are your ends rough, thinner and lighter?

If they answer mostly yes, their hair needs repair—and Botanical Repair ™

Perform the elasticity test to confirm your result.

Elasticity measures how well the hair stretches and returns to its original length. Hair with good elasticity is more resilient during styling. Hair with medium elasticity is sensitized; it stretches easily but doesn’t fully bounce back. Hair with poor elasticity is weak and damaged, which can result in breakage during daily styling.

Perform the porosity test to confirm your result.

Porosity affects the hair’s ability to accept and retain moisture. It also plays a big part in how much hydration the hair needs. Hair with high porosity absorbs products quickly and processes faster. Hair with low porosity is more resistant to product absorption, including the absorption of hydrating products.

WHAT IF HAIR IS NEEDS REPAIR AND HYDRATION?

Hair that is severely damaged cannot easily hold hydration. Therefore, if hair is both damaged and dry, treat the damage first, to repair and strengthen the hair so the hair structure can better hold hydration once again.

Using your index and middle fingers, press the product from scalp to ends using quick, scissor-like motions, alternating between your right and left hand. 13

Massage the front right side of the guest’s scalp with the Pramāsana™ Exfoliating Scalp Brush using light friction motions, moving from the front of the ear to the midline. Massage for 20 seconds.

Place the bristles of the brush on the front right side of the guest’s scalp, and massage using circular, friction motions, gently lifting and moving the scalp tissue in an upward direction. Repeat in two more areas.

Place your right hand on the back the guest’s head and your left hand on the forehead. Gently press your hands together, hold the pressure for five seconds and then slowly release the pressure for five seconds. Repeat twice.

Place your hands on either side of the guest’s head. Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips using circular, friction motions.

Using your index or middle fingers, massage the following marma points using slow, circular, friction motions for 10–15 seconds:

• Massage point 1 (Simanta): Located on the midline 2–4 cm from the front hairline

• Massage point 2 (Simanta): Located on the midline halfway between the front hairline and the crown

• Massage point 3 (Adhipati): Located on the midline 1–3 cm past the crown

Place your hands on either side of the guest’s head with your thumbs positioned toward the back hairline. Clamp your fingers and thumbs together, gently lifting the scalp tissue. Repeat over the entire scalp.

Note: If the guest is reclined, place your hands on either side of their head with your thumbs positioned toward the front hairline.

A: Each hair strand is comprised of three parts: the medulla, cortex and cuticle. The medulla is the core or center of the hair strand, and its function is unknown. The cortex is the thick, interior layer of the hair strand and is responsible for many of the characteristics of any given head of hair, including texture, strength and color. The cuticle is made up of 6–8 layers of flattened, overlapping cells that are sealed in by an invisible layer, scientists call the F-layer.

The F-layer acts as a natural conditioner, keeping hair smooth, shiny and silky. It reflects light and limits friction between hair strands. It also protects hair by preventing it from absorbing too much water from the environment. If the F-layer is damaged, hair strands can become tangled with and stuck to one another. Once the F-layer is damaged beyond repair, there is no getting it back. A: The retail and professional Botanical Repair ™ products multiply hydrogen bonds. The bond-multiplying molecule used in Botanical Repair ™ is small, allowing it to penetrate the hair’s cortex. It also contains multiple bonding sites, resulting in the formation of many bonds in the cortex.

Q: What is the difference between disulfide bond building and Aveda’s bond-multiplying technology?

A: Botanical Repair’s™ bond-multiplying ingredient can interact with many different sites on the keratin protein inside the hair, resulting in the formation of many hydrogen bonds. This very small molecule acts like multiple sets of hands locked together, creating a network of bonds that helps strengthen hair’s internal structure.
