Better Boarding Provision – A Seminar for Governors Date: Venue:

Cost:

7 July 2015 Royal York Hotel Station Road York YO24 1AA £185 - Member £225 - Non Member

Speaker Alex Thomson OBE BSA Director of Training

Why should your Governor attend? Boarding schools face a wide range of challenges ranging from the new National Minimum Standards (NMS) and the associated Inspection Framework to UK Boarders Agency Visa requirements for overseas boarders. In addition, supporting the pastoral needs of pupils in an increasingly complex and demanding environment require schools and their staff to keep current with best practice. This seminar will provide an opportunity to better understand the boarding aspects at your school and to therefore help development and improvment in the provision.

Audience: All new school governors; those with a boarding overview and governors wishing an update on the national picture.

Alex taught geography and mathematics before joining the Education & Training branch of the Army. His service included roles as Director of Adult Education in Northern Ireland, Chief Examinations Officer for the Army’s Junior Officer Education and Training, and Senior Education Adviser to the Officer Selection Board. Before becoming BSA’s Director of Training in September 2008, he was the Children’s Services Director for British Forces in Germany. He is passionate about promoting staff development and team building in education and boarding. He was made OBE in the 2009 New Year’s Honours List for his support to Service Children and their families in Germany. He has been Director of Training for six years and has expanded the Day Seminar programme and the BSA Professional Certificate course to meet the needs of our boarding schools. There are now over 290 boarding staff engaged on the latter programme.

Content We will consider the new NMS and the Boarding Inspection requirements, and we will explore the emerging challenges to help governors better understand their role and allow them to be more effective in supporting the operation and development of boarding. After an overview of UK Boarding, we will look at the key areas of safeguarding, inspection, and raising standards.
