From the editor
Welcome to the Summer edition of the Boarding School magazine.
With Easter a fond and distant memory and the summer months ahead of us, it’s a busy time for the BSA team as we gear up for our two headline conferences. The Annual Conference for Heads is just around the corner on May 2-3, followed swiftly by the Annual Boarding Conference on June 6-7
A key focus in this edition is mental health and pupil wellbeing in boarding. We hear from eight member schools on how they work to prioritise the welfare of boarders and ensure mental health provision is at the heart of the boarding experience From connecting with nature, introducing headspace programmes, encouraging a culture of open conversation and introducing early intervention, boarding schools are certainly becoming proud pioneers in pastoral provision
Gavin Horgan, Millfield Head and BSA Chair, talks further about our upcoming conferences on page 9
Also within the pages of this edition, Richard Stokes, CEO, Australian Boarding Schools’ Association (ABSA) will discuss boarding trends down under, you’ll read about how member schools are ensuring smooth boarding transitions for students and a feature on managing those everpresent and ever-changing digital risks
We hope you enjoy reading this latest edition of the Boarding School magazine and, as ever, we thank you for your continued support Please do get in touch via bsa@boarding.org.uk if you would like to contribute towards any of our future publications

Foreword from CEO Robin Fletcher
faith, academies, MATs, SATs, maintained, free and grammar are some of the many often confusing terms of different uK schools funded by the government. And alongside this we also have the words like public and private to describe schools which charge for tuition.
It must be hard for families to make sense of all these labels while they try to choose the best school for their child, particularly if they come from countries with completely different naming systems
Among this lexicon of confusion however, there is one word that doesn’t just apply to a type of school but is also a good way to describe one of the key benefits of boarding: independent
We are all familiar with education systems which place huge and often unhelpful emphasis on countable things that can be used to compare So it is each summer that there is a rush to compare public exam results between one year and another, or between different schools, or subjects, or genders
Then there’s the discussion about the proportion of students who got a certain number of top grades and whether that’s an indication of higher intelligence, better teaching, students
working harder, softer marking, or none of the above
There are no such formal league tables though to measure if a child has become more independent through a particular educational experience than they might have if they had pursued another.
But just because the data is not so readily available, does not mean something is not true And the power of boarding when it comes to increasing independence among those fortunate to access a boarding education is regularly cited by parents, students and professional boarding practitioners
One of the ways this is achieved in boarding is getting first-time boarders and parents used to the idea of separation and reduced contact As an example, two years ago, I spent a Sunday lunchtime in a boarding house watching the housemaster address new parents and their sons After they had all lunched together he
Robin Fletcher Chief Executive CEO, BSA and BSA Group
explained that it was time for them to leave their sons, and that they should expect not to hear from them for at least two weeks
For some parents the idea of your son or daughter boarding for the first time and not being able to talk to you about the experience for two weeks must be torture yet in those weeks the first seeds of independence are sown, seeds which soon become roots which over time become deeper and deeper, all the time helping the plant above the soil to remain healthy and flourish.
A parent of a Spanish boy at another boarding school told me that when she first dropped him off they had both found the moment of parting hard and tearful, but by the start of his second term he ran into his boarding house without a backward glance.
That’s true independence and it’s the priceless gift at the heart of every good boarding school

BSA Chair and Head Millfield School
From the Chair
The BSA magazine serves as a fantastic highlights reel full of the wonderful work taking place across our boarding community each term
the BsA’s headline face-to-face conferences remain a hugely important fixture in all of our calendars it is a chance for the sector to come together under one roof to challenge ourselves in becoming better, to fine tune our processes and to take stock, reflect, and make improvements it is also an opportunity, too, to share our own experiences with fellow leaders and boarding colleagues alike, be they recent successes or hardships we have overcome we work in the most human of industries and we have a common purpose in that we all believe in the merits of community, so coming together should always be at the heart of what we do
there is much to be gained from coming together annually in celebration of the sector Collectively, we have the power to make a meaningful difference to the lives of the young people in our care and when faced with everincreasing financial and political
pressures, never has there been a more vital time to re-group, open the floor to discussion and inspire one-another it is up to us as boarding practitioners to demonstrate the value of the sector, after all
As i write, there are only a few days until i will be hosting the BsA Annual Conference for heads on may 2-3 at the Bristol City Centre marriott the aim of this two-day conference will be to reflect on the many benefits of boarding and provide support for oneanother as we navigate our leadership roles Fellow heads can expect emotive boarding stories, discussions on political threats, updates on safeguarding measures and a variety of expert insights
the BsA/tioB Annual Boarding Conference will follow swiftly afterwards on june 6-7, hosted by judith FremontBarnes, head of milton Abbey school and conference Chair welcoming
deputy heads, heads of Boarding and Boarding house staff, this conference is worth taking time out from a busy boarding schedule to attend expert speakers will address the theme ‘fresh perspectives’ and delve into the ways in which we can support boarders navigating challenges such as personal identity, neurodiversity and sexual orientation
As with each publication, a reminder that the BsA team are here to support each and every member school in our roles as boarding practitioners so please do not hesitate to get in contact with the team should you require guidance, advice or if you have any questions relating to an upcoming event
i wish you a successful summer term and i look forward to speaking with many of you at the BsA Annual Conference for heads, places of which are still available to book

“Like a defibrillator, but for allergies” | Award Winning Emergency ‘Anaphylaxis Kitts’ with CPD Accredited training from latest BSA Certified Supplier, Kitt Medical
Kitt Medical’s award winning Anaphylaxis Kitt service provides schools with a wall mountable emergency anaphylaxis kit, a dependable supply of adrenaline pens, unlimited access to online CPD accredited anaphylaxis training, and more –all in one convenient yearly subscription.
Founded by allergy sufferer Zak Marks, Kitt aim to raise awareness about the severity of allergies and make sure life-saving anaphylaxis medication can be accessed by anyone who needs it in an emergency This is backed up by recent studies
Medical needs Co-ordinator (rn) at Wilmslow High School, Karen Cragg:
“we need to make sure that we can accommodate all our students medical needs, and sometimes the rigid structure of the school doesn’t quite do that And how high up there in terms of educational needs and medical needs is allergy care to one’s life kitt is an inspirational product ensuring young people at risk of anaphylaxis have immediate access to emergency treatment ”
that show there’s 1-2 children with an allergy in every school classroom across the UK, and 20% of severe allergic reactions at school occur in children with no prior history of allergy
The Kitt team have recently launched in schools and academies all across the UK after running a successful pilot phase and winning multiple prestigious awards. Keep reading to hear why those all across the education sector are calling Kitt a ‘no brainer ’:
first Aid lead at ralph Allen school, Trevor Smith:
“it eases the pressure when you know there is something you can grab at a moment ’s notice when required for a medical emergency, and with ralph Allen having three kitts on site, if a student were to have an anaphylactic reaction, one of these life saving boxes could be grabbed from anywhere on site within 60 seconds it really is the equivalent of an Aed for Anaphylaxis ”
director of Safeguarding at oasis MAT, Jon needham:
“the concept brought by kitt medical of a ‘grab bag’ approach to the safe storage and easy accessibility to a spare adrenaline injector pen is both simple and really effective the passion to improve people’s life chances is evident in the kitt team, whose approach to training and ability to communicate is spot on ”
to find out more about kitt medical’s Anaphylaxis kitt service for your school, please place an enquiry directly through their website at www.kittmedical.com

In recent months, three Sixth Formers from Ashville College have recently set up an after-school Girls in Science club to share knowledge and ideas with pupils in Years 7

the recent pandemic acted as a catalyst for further, faster and more determined change to how we understand, manage and support our young people in

Boarding Transitions
Olly Langton Headmaster Belhaven Hill School
Belhaven Hill School is one of Scotland’s leading boarding and day schools for 5-13 year olds, where boarding is a natural part of life
“i like to think of Belhaven as a home with classrooms, rather than a school with dormitories,” says Belhaven headmaster, olly Langton
“the transition to boarding here can be done in a variety of ways, from a ‘trial board’ for new pupils, or a gradual integration over half a term every new boarder is paired
up with a ‘buddy ’ and presented with a Belhaven teddy bear for their first, fun-packed nights
“we have created a home-from-home that takes advantage of our wonderful seaside location in east Lothian and creates opportunities to develop independence of spirit and lifelong friendships
understanding the importance of a smooth transition for students who are new to Prep
Belhaven Hill manages to tread the very narrow tightrope of upholding traditional values while delivering a progressive education. The school is quite frankly magical.

Stowe School partners with Govox Wellbeing’s proactive mental health monitoring platform to combine modern, digital techniques with traditional pastoral care..
At the start of this academic year, stowe school partnered with digital mental health monitoring service, govox wellbeing, to further enhance their sector-leading pastoral care system
govox’s platform engages stowe pupils with bi-termly simple digital ‘check ins’ where they answer a set of short questions that analyse their overall mental health, providing a ‘wellbeing score’ and flagging any concerning findings, in particular highlighting any ‘high risk’ pupils to the pastoral team the platform also provides a forum for pupils to share any general thoughts, concerns or worries virtually, removing the barrier of having to approach a member of staff or teacher in person
the embracing of new digital monitoring techniques like govox alongside more traditional elements of pastoral care such as house parents and onsite counsellors, is a clear example of the ongoing advancement in methods that allow effective supporting of mental, alongside physical wellbeing at stowe in embracing these new digital strategies, stowe are now able to reach the whole cohort, enabling students who struggle to speak up if they are experiencing mental health issues, to have an accessible platform through which to get support
“Govox was introduced to us through the LooseHeadz initiative We had a system in place that offered regular check-ins for our pupils However, this was not providing us with transparent information that Stoics and tutors could relate easily to The Govox team has worked closely with our Pastoral team to create a series of questions, asked at regular intervals throughout the term, that allow us to capitalise on our pupils’ use of technology The red flag system then allows us to triage any issues at an early stage and be proactive rather than reactive to mental health issues ”
Liam Copley, senior deputy head
stowe’s approach and emphasis on pastoral support, centres around the premise that a happy, healthy and contented student will be more likely to have the capabilities to thrive and contribute productively and successfully to society in later life
in establishing an understanding and awareness of the importance of discussing mental health, stowe and govox are nurturing the future generation of empathetic leaders, who will bring a more inclusive approach to mental health as they enter the workplace and raise families of their own in the years to come
in their first term of using the digital platform, stowe has discovered a number of interesting insights For example
1 97 5% of students are checking in with the platform, proving that the Govox platform has landed well and is trusted by the Stoics.
2. The Happiness Index* is tracking favourably, with a rolling average of 75 6% which puts Stowe in the top decile of Independent Schools being tracked by Govox.
3 To date, 795 individual pieces of student wellbeing feedback have been received, enabling the Pastoral team to proactively triage any Stoics in need of further support
stowe’s collaboration with govox exemplifies how the combination of digital methods alongside more traditional methods of pastoral care can ensure all students’ mental health is cared for
govox is a proactive wellbeing programme, helping schools effectively connect with their students and staff, identify who needs help and ensure that the right support is available and relevant to each student govox helps safeguarding leads put a discreet lens on students’ mental health and gain vital information from them in a non-intrusive way

on top of this we are celebrating wonderful weather across this vast country, meaning that our rural and remote families, which make up over 75% of the boarding population of our schools, are experiencing bumper crops and high meat prices the result is that the domestic boarding school enrolments have strengthened, and in fact grown, with many boarding schools having a waiting list - a situation they have not faced for over ten years
there has not been a return in international student enrolments to pre-pandemic levels at this stage, although these numbers are slowly growing
there are also a growing number of boarders from areas close to the schools, choosing boarding for its lifestyle, its routine and move all for the wonderful care provided by the school
B o a r d i n g t r e n d s d o w n u n d e r
All of this has meant boarding staff, many of whom are not teachers, have reached out to strengthen their professional learning in this very important job more and more we are seeing people celebrating their work in boarding as being part of a key profession, although many schools are struggling to get staff prepared to take on the challenging role of looking after children
whilst in Australia we have no mandated Boarding standard, the Boarding standard for Australian schools and residences has become the benchmark minimum standard for all schools A voluntary certification scheme has been launched and we envisage many schools lining up to become certified over the coming months

Westonbirt School launch new Sixth Form Boarding House
during the Summer of 2022, Witley Jones were delighted to have been invited to manufacture and supply the boarding accommodation furniture for Westonbirt School‘s Holford House, a new sixth form boarding house
“We were looking for a specialist school furniture supplier, who are well versed in delivering boarding accommodation projects, supplying robust and fit-forpurpose furniture With this requirement in mind, we had received several recommendations to speak with Dave and Witley Jones ”
ModulAr APProACH To dESiGn
During the design phase it was crucial to pay careful consideration to each room’s layout and the floorplans as a whole – which Witley Jones provided Each student’s furniture requirements needed to be met, with ample and effective use of space
It was decided to adopt a modular approach to the furniture, to assist with a smooth installation and to minimise time on site, especially with a tight timeframe to coincide with other contractors
Witley Jones did this by machining skirting cut outs and overhangs on desks so that furniture could fit back to walls wherever possible and ‘gaps’ were avoided.
They also adopted their most robust hardware offering too – using heavyduty cranked piano hinges and drawer runners to maximise the lifespan of the furniture.

nEuTrAl Colour TonES
With the aim to create a home-fromhome for Westonbirt School students, it was important to carefully factor in colour to the finish of the furniture and living spaces We supplied chair fabrics to match the desk lamp and curtains provided by the School
The School adopted a two-tone approach to the furniture, using light grey for carcases with drawer fronts and doors in a light oak effect Melamine, providing neutral tones that will age well; all on a solid MDF core to prolong the lifespan.
“Witley Jones are proactive and helpful, listening to exactly what we wanted which is essential with projects of this nature Dave supported us with design ideas, and advised on space planning, layout and colour scheme They have a flexible approach, providing a tailored process and product which was delivered on time ”

the challenges schools face online
in england, a school’s child protection policy and the procedures which underpin it must reflect keeping Children safe in education 2022 and the 2022 national minimum standards for Boarding schools (nms 8 3) under nms 8 4 there is a duty for schools to make clear their approach to harmful online content, including pupils’ own devices and ‘harmful content that may already be downloaded onto it ’ this challenge for schools can be best met through a combination of relevant pshe content, acceptable use policies, judicious use of sanctions and the ‘professional curiosity ’ of staff to follow up on any concerns. nms in wales are currently being updated.
Dale Wilkins Senior Director, BSA and BSA Group
it’s important that schools understand how to keep children safe inside and outside a school environment and online. giving children a safe space to share concerns they have online can open doors for staff to take action and educate children.”

Matthew Jamieson Director of Operations Sherborne School
the potential digital risks to pupils in boarding are often associated with safeguarding issues while these are very important and carefully handled at sherborne school, we have also identified and targeted the social and physical safety risks presented by excessive
engagement in the digital world
Following significant consultation with parents, staff and boys, we have incrementally limited the extent to which our pupils are able to access their mobile devices and the digital world away from lessons the benefits have been immediate
Boys look up when walking around campus and town and engage more readily with their environment which greatly improves their physical safety housemasters and matrons have noticed livelier discussion and social interaction and a huge reduction in the addictive
behaviours which social media can bring of course, for some pupils this has been a difficult transition, but there have been many who have confided quietly in tutors and parents that the change has been a great relief and improved many aspects of their lives at school
‘‘ ‘‘ 65
The benefits of limiting digital access away from lessons have been immediate: greater awareness increases personal safety and promotes quality social engagement
Carbon Neutral Uniform & Sportswear
Schoolblazer is dedicated to becoming the most ethical and sustainable supplier of schoolwear and sportswear in uK independent schools. Since our inception we have been aware of the polluting nature of garment production, and in our work to reduce our environmental impact we reached one conclusion: the best way to do this is to buy fewer things and design products which last
the average fast fashion garment is worn just seven times; we design our garments to be worn over two hundred times, and know that many of them last over 500 wears our core principle is therefore “durability = sustainability ”
this principle is our focus at every step of our planning and production we extensively research materials and fabrics, wash-testing and rigorously assessing how long each garment will last in all our work, we will never compromise durability
the fundamental environmental issue facing the planet is global warming due to Co2 emissions we’ve mapped the Co2 for all of our activities, from the production or growth of our fibres and yarns, through fabric weaving to delivery to the customer over 85% of our emissions are due to fibre production and in total we’ve calculated that 20kg of Co2 is emitted for every pupil we serve our goal is to reduce this total, both by reducing our operational emissions and seeking alternative low energy sources of fibre in the meantime, we offset 2500 tonnes of Co2 each year, more than compensating for the unavoidable emissions created by our entire operation
A number of other key initiatives guide our work and sustainability goals For example, we are members of the Better Cotton initiative, which aims to transform cotton production worldwide; by the end of 2023 over 80% of our cotton will be Better Cotton we also ensure 100% of factories supplying fabric to our supply chain have full water treatment plans and are compliant with the most stringent environmental legislation
polyester is our primary fibre, as it is durable, flexible and suited to many uses in clothing however it doesn’t degrade at end of life and requires six times its own weight in carbon dioxide to produce we’re actively moving our garments to recycled polyester; our Limitless sportswear range is now made entirely with recycled polyester fibre in 2023 over 80% of all of our polyester fibre will be recycled, with a target of over 95% by 2024
Likewise, we are aware of the number of single-use plastics in our supply chain most of these are used to protect our fabrics or garments during transit, so eliminating them would compromise our core “durability = sustainability ” principle however, in 2020 we began to ship our jackets and other products in
reusable outer packaging, eliminating plastic bags here; we also successfully trialled the removal of all plastic packaging on coloured garments in several schools in 2021 we have targeted a 70% reduction (vs 2018 benchmark) in 2023, and 75% by 2024
we sincerely believe in global trade, and we want everybody involved in the production of our garments to have a better life as a result of interacting with us to help us with this we are full members of the ethical trading initiative (eti) – the only specialist schoolwear retailer to achieve this membership has pushed our thinking to a whole new level, encouraging us to think more deeply about thorough planning, cooperation and understanding the challenges faced by our factories across the world we have adapted our strategy to embed these principles into every one of our operations
schoolblazer is committed to the ethical and sustainable production of uniform and sportswear we remain at the forefront of our industry, but we’re not stopping there, with new initiatives including Zero to Landfill coming soon to find out more about our work, please visit www schoolblazer info/wecare

Addressing online safety with pupils
As we emerge from the frenzy of safer internet day which took place on tuesday February 7, it is a perfect time to take stock and consider how we are addressing online safety with pupils education as opposed to restriction is key and given some of the pressures that young people are facing both on and offline it is important to provide opportunities for discussion and debate and particularly around some of the more challenging issues such as online misogyny, extremist content and pornography we are hearing reports of an increase in sextortion (now referred to as the online sexual exploitation and coercion of children) especially targeting boys and this underlines the need to discuss these more challenging online safety topics and provide some practical advice, guidance and support Listening to children and young people, asking them what they think of the online safety education they receive is crucial if our provision is to be effective
there is a constant stream of new research being published in the online safety space and schools need to take note of the findings and adapt their polices, procedures and practice as a result if they are to improve i am very aware that online safety is a small (but vital) part of what schools need to do in the bigger safeguarding picture and as the newly appointed Chair of sACpA i shall do everything i can, working alongside the excellent teams at both sACpA and BsA to highlight the importance of online safety, particularly in our boarding environments and support schools as much as possible in getting this right
with the online safety bill making its way through parliament, and with so much happening on the national and international stage with regards to online safety, it is a real privilege to be appointed as sACpA Chair and to be able to be part of taking the organisation forwards at such a crucial point in time

Building and sustaining relationships with feeder schools, agents, alumni and other key stakeholders must continue to be at the top of a school’s agenda to ensure brand strength Coordinating these relationships requires a strategic approach, managed centrally but involving the right blend of staff to execute it effectively the creation of additional revenue streams through optimal use of assets will also be crucial as surplus gets squeezed
matching your school’s offering with what the market wants, profitably, may seem straightforward in simple marketing terms however, when placed in a competitive sector with an often strikingly similar premium product, schools must work hard to tell their unique story in order to win and maintain market share it will be the strength of a school’s marketing department to influence the future direction of the school by listening to
and adapting to market needs An effective marketing strategy should be aligned to the school’s overall business strategy and based on regular market research to take advantage of opportunities and combat any threats in an ever-advancing digital world, marketers can now select from a plethora of options to execute their strategy and influence the customer journey; from digital adverts, personalised prospectuses and dedicated landing pages through to podcasts, tv adverts and a whole host of social media platforms it is the task of a seasoned professional to pick the right mix of options and ensure they are delivered on time and on budget this takes time, knowledge and investment; it is virtually impossible for one person to be an expert in all these increasingly specialist areas, so recruiting the right blend of skill sets is key or outsource for expertise when needed
The importance of school marketing has never been greater; with the increasing market pressures of affordability and potential tax burdens on the horizon, independent schools are going to need an effective marketing strategy, team and toolkit in place.
“An effective dig strategy is also c you have a mar
Sophy W Director of Marketing Royal Hosp
gital marketingrucial to ensure rket presence”
An effective digital marketing strategy is also crucial to ensure you have a market presence A dynamic website should be at its heart, automatically feeding in news stories and/or brand hashtags to provide authentic evidence of your offering and values digital advertising is also key to effective targeting, but it has become increasingly sophisticated over recent years involving remarketing, look-a-like audiences, competitor targeting and methods such as geotargeting outsourcing this can be an effective option to ensure any spend is used effectively
in terms of social media, the focus used to be on the big four (instagram, Facebook, twitter and youtube) however, Linkedin has really proved its worth in terms of engagement, and growing platforms such as tiktok should not be ignored if you don’t control your brand on tiktok, you can
be sure that your students will be with approximately 53% of users over 30 years of age, many young families are likely to look for your school on tiktok as part of their school search investing in sophisticated Crm software such as salesforce or hubspot is also an investment worth considering; most schools are behind the curve compared to commercial sectors when it comes to customer tracking providing your marketing and sales team with the right toolkit to move inquiries through the sales funnel more effectively will allow them to collaborate more efficiently to reach your recruitment goals
investment in marketing should be a priority during such a challenging period for independent schools, and it will be those schools that focus on building an effective team and providing them with the right toolkit who will survive and thrive in the challenging years ahead

Emma Picken Head of Boarding and DSL Prior ’s Field School
It started in 2016 when the Boarders’ Committee identified that they did not feel part of the local community outside school, and asked if I could help them in reaching out The committee were particularly keen to find older people who might be lonely and be able to add some enrichment to their lives Given the need for safeguarding for both groups, this was no easy task!
however, through connections i was put in touch with primetime, a group for retirees based in our nearest town of godalming, surrey in reality, a large number of those who attend primetime groups live
by themselves and are far beyond retirement age the group provides activities and companionship, and for those whose family have moved away, the relationship with prior ’s Field fills a void and the group members very much enjoy the interactions with young people, who can help them navigate the modern world
our first visit was in 2016, to meet the group, have tea and start initial chats Almost 7 years later this has become a strong, continued part of being a boarder at prior ’s Field
P
p r i o r ’ s F i e L d s C h o o L
These are a selection of the annual interactions with
Primetime:
• every term there is a different event offered for the primetime group, and boarders also attend some of the group’s events to help serve refreshments and talk to the members
• the group come to our termly school productions and are hosted by boarders
• the Boarding community make and write Christmas/seasonal cards to every member of primetime
• Boarders attend the primetime Carol service, and serve refreshments, wash up and help tidy
• the boarders host a spring sunday lunch we run a transport bus to collect/ return primetime members from their homes, sixth form boarders help escort this they join boarders for a family style sunday lunch, play games and have informal performances
• in the summer term the boarders arrange a summer tea and concert in our grounds - performing music, drama or dance pieces for the group and serving cream tea
in all these opportunities the boarders interact with the group members, sharing stories about their lives in and out of school the events are always a full of chat, laughs and our bond with primetime has grown over the years many of the boarders get to know the members, and of course sadly, sometimes we do not see members again during covid when we could not meet in person the boarder ’s produced a ‘Boarder ’s news’ flyer that we were able to send to the group members so they could keep up with what the boarders were doing during lockdown
i also acknowledge the benefits for the boarders hosting events and looking after others gives many of them opportunities to build confidence and learn new skills - learning to carve a chicken at sunday lunch being a lasting memory! many of our boarders might not see older family members term to term, and have found being able to provide some companionship to the group very rewarding
OTHER LOCAL COMMUNITY WORK:
Carol singing
For the past 18 years (with a break during Covid) the boarding community have sung carols in our local town of godalming, often at waitrose this is not a trained choir, but a voluntary group of boarders who enjoy singing and want to share some festive cheer whilst raising money for charity the Boarders’ Committee vote on the charity of choice, and often the event supports help for heroes it is eagerly anticipated, and last Christmas, had a definite continental flavour with our spanish boarders teaching some festive songs
Christmas Hampers since 2016 the boarders have donated to a local scheme run by Busbridge Church, providing hampers for those locally who may find the festive period a challenge, financially or for health reasons the boarders decided to collect donations through a reverse Advent calendar scheme so that over the first weeks of december they collected items of food, crackers, decorations and Christmas gifts made into hampers and delivered locally staff help deliver the hampers once term has finished

WHAT ARE LEADERSHIP EXPEDITIONS AND HOW DO THEY ENRICH YOUNG PEOPLE’S LIVES?
A Leadership Expedition is an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their future prospects. With the physical challenge of a trek, mental tests like budget management and endless cultural barriers to navigate, they walk away from these experiences transformed on many different levels. Travelling away from home, and mixing with other cultures and friendship groups, is something that can’t be replicated in the classroom – and plays a huge role in the transformation you will see in your students.
Students run the show
Allowing students to take the reins on an expedition has a transformative effect, according to one of our travelling teachers. “The students have to do everything, from managing the budget to cooking for themselves. We, the teachers, support them, but they run the show,” she said. “In Iceland, our students were camping and had to cook their own food throughout the trip. Cooking for 17 people on three stoves is harder than you think. So when they created something that everyone actually enjoyed, it may seem like a small win, but it was massive for them. They were so proud of themselves.”
After an expedition, many of their students were “completely different”, offering to lead school assemblies about the trip where before they would have been too shy. “Many students arrive quiet, and not confident to contribute to the group, and by the end, they are leading the team,” she said. “They have done something completely alien to them, with people they might not normally mix with. These trips have an impact not just on students’ careers, but on their lives in general.”
Cultivating entrepreneurial skills from the get-go
Jaimee Relph raised £4,000 for an expedition to North India when she was 16. Now aged 23, and still involved with World Challenge, she still sees fundraising as a major part of expeditions. “You appreciate the value of how much it costs to go more, and so you get much more out of the trip by jumping on all of the opportunities offered in-country because you worked so hard to get there. Pushing yourself to fundraise allows you to develop invaluable skills before you have even left the country,” she said.
Tapping into the entrepreneurial side of things can feed into project management on the expedition, and in later experiences. For Jaimee, this revealed itself during the community-led project phase of her expedition. She said: “We had a budget to spend on renovations for a community youth centre... Working out how we could have the biggest impact with this budget in a short timeframe required creativity and local collaboration.
“Negotiating prices with locals, whilst buying and organising the transport of building materials in central India, I was completely out of my comfort zone, but the commitment and drive the team showed meant we pushed ourselves – which is when we really developed. Looking back at the context we were in, and the tight timeframe we had to work with, makes it even more rewarding that we pulled it off.”
Finding their place
For Jaimee, Leadership Expeditions not only develop students’ confidence and resilience but also offer a crucial insight into challenges faced in different parts of the world.
“If you have never seen the issues faced, you can’t relate to them,” she said. “One thing that always stands out for me is the number of fundamental similarities that you have with those you meet in-country. This is so important when trying to understand and make an impact in the world you live in. Leadership Expeditions enable students to form their own opinions on global challenges, after seeing issues firsthand. I have seen it give young people a fire in their belly to take action about injustices in the world.”

that video of Anthony pirouetting in the rain was watched more than 16 million times and brought offers pouring in the 13-year-old met the Queen when she visited the ballet school that gave him a scholarship
Anthony, now several inches taller than in his video, is in his second year at elmhurst Ballet school in Birmingham, which is celebrating its centenary the visit by the Queen, who is the school’s patron, was postponed last month when she contracted Covid
Camilla, who described in 2020 how she had taken up silver swan ballet tutorials to keep fit, told the pupils that ballet schools were “so important”
she said: “Every time I come here, I never cease to be impressed by the students. It’s the discipline, the manners and the pleasure that you all give everything
“And, speaking as an ancient Silver Swan who took up ballet very, very late in life, I just had no idea quite how difficult it was So when I go and see a performance now, I just sit and study all the movements and think, ‘I don’t know how anybody does it!’”
Carlos Acosta, artistic director of Birmingham royal Ballet, joined Camilla for the visit and later described how Anthony ’s journey mirrored his own from Cuba to europe to study dance

“
The Queen paid a visit to Elmhurst Ballet School, where Anthony Madu is learning to dance “
Acosta, who is a vice-president of elmhurst and was principal guest dancer with the royal Ballet for 17 years, said: “The opportunities facing Anthony are exactly what I faced when I first arrived in Italy at the age of 16 and then in London at the age of 18
“It’s a whole adaptation process that could be very choking at times, but he’s been very well nurtured here and is being well cared for by teachers who understand how very hard it is for him, but I think eventually it will make him stronger in every way ”
disney announced in september that it would be making a documentary about the youngster, whose family live on the edge of the nigerian capital, Lagos he had little formal training there but showed great talent
speaking after the Queen’s visit, Anthony said of elmhurst: “My dancing’s going well, it’s really, really great and I’m really enjoying it.”
talking about his journey, he added: “I just hope that younger dancers from anywhere around the world ... I just hope to inspire them to pursue their dreams and never give up.”

The Breck Foundation: Teaching young people digital resilience.
The Breck foundation is at the forefront of efforts to safeguard children and young people online.
in the year 2000, only 26% of the uK population was using the internet, yet now it is integral to all our lives and 99% of children in the uK go online regularly. our shared digital landscape is ever-evolving and children are facing an increasing number of unregulated online spaces that predators, groomers, scammers, and anyone else seeking to cause harm can use in 2019, it was estimated that more than 200,000 secondary school children may have been groomed online – this is a serious problem that often hides in plain sight, behind screens and inside our young people’s technology
in the year 2000, only 26% of the uk population was using the internet, yet now it is integral to all our lives and 99% of children in the uk go online regularly our shared digital landscape is everevolving and children are facing an increasing number of unregulated online spaces that predators, groomers, scammers, and anyone else seeking to cause harm can use in 2019, it was estimated that more than 200,000 secondary school children may have been groomed online – this is a serious problem that often hides in plain sight, behind screens and inside our young people’s technology
Breck Foundation was founded in 2014 by Lorin LaFave gordon in response to the tragic loss of her son Breck Bednar over the course of a year, Breck was groomed online the groomer used cruel lies, manipulation and false promises to gain Breck’s trust and eventually successfully lured Breck to their flat on February 17th, 2014, Breck was murdered by his online groomer
Breck Foundation works tirelessly to prevent this from ever happening to another child ever again however, the battle they face is growing - the amount of young people whose lives are being destroyed or marked forever by digital danger is increasing we cannot ignore the stories of molly russell, olly stephens, Frankie thomas and Christoforos nicolaou and others which, like Breck’s, all highlight the urgency and necessity of the Breck Foundation’s work they can collaborate with you to provide the right educational sessions to help keep children at your school safe online
the core of the Foundation’s work is centred around reaching thousands of children and young people in schools and community groups with Breck’s story every year through years of experience, the Foundation has expertly honed a suite of age-appropriate educational sessions through which children and young people are empowered with the knowledge they need to stay safe and happy online
Breck Foundation fill a gap in the current uk curriculum that otherwise leaves children vulnerable to online grooming and exploitation
“It would be easy to simply tell the story of Breck, but the session went way beyond this and used it as a vehicle to provide information and guidance about a wide range of safeguarding factors as well as self-help for students ”
Headteacher at The Langley Academy
Breck Foundation believes that because everyone has eyes and ears, everyone needs to be aware of the signs of grooming so they can take action, report problems and prevent harm, which is why they deliver sessions to teachers and parents as well, in schools, community groups and corporate settings
“The Breck Foundation workshop gives the children and parents a tool to spot what is happening and gives children the confidence to realise that their relationship online is not right and to ask for help.”
Head of IT at St Clément s Catholic Primary School
Breck Foundation also provides powerful drama-based learning through a theatrical version of Breck’s story, written by the award-winning playwright mark wheeller for older secondary pupils to engage with and perform, as well as a series of accompanying workshops
the Breck Foundation offers a bespoke long-term learning programme called rise e2e - resilience internet safety education: An end-to-end project rise e2e is a unique educational programme centred around a variety of online skills and digital safety topics, that the Foundation adapts to the particular needs of your pupils, teachers and parents
moreover, they have a wide-ranging selection of adaptable send resources, including music, a picture book, a play, and a graphic novel, to allow for their life-saving lessons to reach all pupils
Lorin LaFave gordon believes that if Breck had heard the Foundations session about online grooming he would still be alive today the Breck Foundation is dedicated to making the internet a place where children can live, play and thrive in safety

Sarah Bellotti Head, Mill Hill International and Chair, BAISIS
AArriving at a universally recognised definition of an international school in the uk is not an easy task For the purpose of this article, i am referring to international schools as those that have mostly students from overseas and whose ethos is international
the international school has many benefits, and not just for international students Adept at helping students make the transition from their previous school,
international schools are an obvious choice by offering a community in which they feel recognised, where they encounter students who, although may come from different parts of the globe, are similar in their outlook and needs Families who need to relocate to the uk mid-year, often at short notice, can find it difficult to secure a place at traditional British schools international schools tend to welcome students throughout the year one of the top concerns of any student
moving to a new school, but especially from overseas, is whether they will make friends; it is easier to do so if you are joining a school where being an international student does not make you stand out
Although there is an increasing number of globally mobile international students who have studied previously in international schools abroad, many will still need eAL support
>>>
U K
I n t e r n a t i o n a l S

Sc h o o l s
This is essential not only for their linguistic development but also for access to the curriculum In addition to offering EAL support classes, international schools adopt the philosophy of “every teacher is a language teacher ” where there is consideration to the language of each subject.
Beyond the linguistic and academic needs, there are cultural hurdles the international student faces Coming from some backgrounds where, for example, student participation in class is not the norm will make the typical British classroom seem quite daunting Often the lack of willingness to volunteer in class discussions may be erroneously attributed to poor linguistic skills; some students will need explicit training in how to engage in class
But international schools are so much more than offering support for a mobile population; Sarah has taught at international schools all of her life, she is no doubt of the cultural capital and global outlook students acquire, and they are equipped with the skills needed for careers in a global market
93
The British Association of Independent Schools with International Students’ BAISIS mission is to champion support for international students and exists to share best practice in academic and pastoral provision for international students in British independent schools and English medium schools globally.

BSA Certified Agent and Guardian schemes
The BSA Certified Agent and Guardian schemes continue to grow, providing reassurance for schools and families
The schemes' training and certification programmes assure BSA boarding schools they are dealing with educational guardians and agents who have the highest standards in the safeguarding of children, safer recruitment and training of staff and host families, knowledge of the UK education system and careful liaison with parents and schools The schemes are a clear demonstration to BSA boarding schools of the quality and intention of the educational agents and guardians who reach certified status.
Both schemes launched in 2020 and currently 60 agents and 50 guardians have been certified, with more joining all the time
Caroline Nixon, International & Membership Director, BSA Group, said:
“Finding a suitable educational agent can be a time-consuming process for schools and parents, but it’s an absolutely vital one Our recent survey of Chinese parents tells us that agents have a major influence when it comes
to choosing the right school for their child, with 85% relying on an agent’s recommendation, so making sure the agent has integrity and knowledge of the school and family is what the scheme aims to do
“With our Certified Agent scheme, we’re doing the due diligence on an agent that schools need to do to maintain their UKvI sponsorship status If an agent is BSA certified, schools don’t need to do their own checks so this saves our members a huge amount of time We ensure agents demonstrate a clear understanding of the UK education system; carry out checks on parents; recommend schools which are right for
individual students, and maintain the highest standards of integrity in placing and supporting each child ”
“Again looking at our survey of Chinese parents, an increasing number of respondents this year highlighted the importance they placed in having assurance around a guardian’s certification And that’s what our Certified Guardian scheme provides. Similar to the criteria agents are required to meet, guardians have to demonstrate the highest standards around their interaction with schools, parents, pupils, and show that they meet our strict assurance requirements for all aspects of safeguarding
The BSA Certified Agent and guardian schemes continue to grow, providi
ing reassurance for schools and families.
“Certification comes with many benefits for both agents and guardians, as those who are certified get access to BSA membership, are listed on the BSA website, receive regular updates from BSA on training and changes to legislation, and two free places annually on BSA training days, as well as discounted access to other events such as BSA conferences, events and training. We can also support agents and guardians with free specialist advice and attendance at their events.”

Having dogs in boarding really helps to create the home away from home feeling that we strive for in boarding. Whether it’s having a furry friend to welcome you home from school or give you a cuddle when you ’ re feeling upset, it’s hard to feel lonely when there’s a loving pet around. All our boarding dogs are great listeners, and love to relax with the boarders after school but they will also never say no to an amble around the grounds and can’t wait for the warmer weather.
If you would like to feature in our autumn 2023 issue, please email photos of your boarding pet to bsa@boarding.org.uk. Don’t forget to let us know their name, age, breed and favourite activity!
