What matters...

As the dental students finish their coursework and take their Boards, they are faced with making decisions about their futures. Further training or start practicing? They are graduating with an average debt of $247,227. In the past they also needed to decide if they wanted to be part of organized dentistry, to join the ADA. Everyone knows the ADA, but what is the tripartite?

The ADA has been working to make the tripartite, the national level, the state level and the local level work better and more seamlessly for our members.

The Power of 3 gives you benefits at all three levels. These benefits include the tangible and the not-so-tangible benefits. There are plenty of benefits that can help you in your practice and in your daily life. At SKCDS (the local level) we have partnered with several companies to offer benefits to our members.

A more recent addition is Bank of America. For members who take out a business loan, they offer special rates and lower fees. Many members have benefited from this partnership.

When we ask our members which benefits are the most important, continuing education is always at the top. This year, for the first time, we offered our evening membership meeting, which include 2 hours of CE and dinner, at no charge. We started off with orthodontist Dr. Ward Smalley speaking about distraction osteogenesis. There were many interesting cases presented, and it was well received by all, including the many orthodontists present! Our second meeting featured Dr. Chris Pickel discussing the newly launched LifeMap. This is an alternative insurance program upon which the WSDA has been collaborating. It has all the benefits of direct reimbursement while being marketed through an insurance broker. There were lots of great questions asked by our members about this insurance program designed to compete with traditional dental insurance (such as Delta Dental of Washington!). For our third program, we had Dr. Karim Alibhai and Dr. Kal Klass speak to us about staying out of trouble and what to do when trouble finds you. Dr. Alibhai, who is a current DQAC commissioner, gave us some insight as to the process at DQAC and some common mistakes some dental practices 4 l 2015 SKCDS SPRING QUARTERLY

make. Dr. Klass, who is the chair of the Peer Review Committee, reviewed the process for peer review. As peer review settles complaints without being reportable and without attorney costs, it is the much preferred route. As you have to be a member of the ADA to go through peer review, this could be considered the most valuable benefit of being an ADA member.

We are finishing up our series with Dr. Cheryl Townsend Winter speaking to us about her recently published book: “The Aging Gracefully Pathway: A Toolkit for the Journey.” This will follow an update from WSDA Board President, Dr. Greg Ogata. We are fortunate to have excellent local talents who have donated their time to speak to us. These meetings are designed to give you a quick SKCDS update, hear some great speakers and meet with your colleagues. I was hoping to have a problem with capacity, but that hasn’t happened yet. I invite you to come check it out. The CDE Committee will be meeting soon to schedule the 2015-2016 year. Your feedback is welcome. They also coordinate the all day programs. Our last program this year is coming up, partnering with the AGD and UWSOD, and features Dr. John Kois. Again, please come, it will be excellent!

The tangible benefits are easier to describe but shouldn’t be the focus. We need an organization to stand behind dentists so that we can continue to do quality dentistry. Our future is challenged with corporate dentistry, midlevel provider legislation, poor reimbursements and increases in business taxes to name a few.

Getting to know your legislators is helpful. There are some individual dentists who have spent a lot of time educating legislators and affecting change for which I am grateful. For most of us, this isn’t part of our weekly schedule. When you are a member of organized dentistry you are helping. It helps when we have more members. Our voice is louder, more relevant and we have better ability to influence.

The WSDA and SKCDS have changed bylaws to allow new graduates to be members for the first 18 months without any dues. That means we have 18 months to impress on these young dentists with high debts, the importance of organized dentistry.

Please help out. Reach out to them and guide them. It will make us collectively stronger. I am thankful that the dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry, Dr. Joel Berg, is an advocate of organized dentistry. To our new grads, I say congratulations, and welcome to a fabulous profession, one of which I am proud to be part. To our existing members, I say thank you for your continued support. Through my involvement with SKCDS the past 9 years, I haves seen how great the organization is. We are very fortunate to have an outstanding executive director at SKCDS in Ms. Jennifer Freimund. She has guided us through decisions that make our local level stronger and more stable. I have enjoyed working with the many fabulous dentists who have volunteered their time on Committees and the Executive Council. Thank you! At the end of the day, what matters is that we continue to make dentistry a profession we are proud of and enjoy!

WE HAVE MOVED!!! SKCDS Relocation 2015 After 26 years in Blanchard Plaza Building (located at the corner of Sixth and Blanchard), your Dental Society has moved! Our former building is being taken over by Amazon, so we had to relocate. We moved into temporary quarters on Saturday, March 28 and into our permanent space on Thursday, April 9th.

The good news is that the Dental Society’s administrative office remains centrally located in Seattle to best serve the needs of the Society.

of Madison and Broadway) which is owned by the Seattle First Baptist Church. Our new location is shared with many other non-profits and will provide several meeting rooms. Parking will be both less expensive and more available than at our current location.

Dr. Mark Bingham Dr. Mark Bingham went to high school in Emmett, Idaho and completed his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University in Utah. He attended the University of Washington Dental School graduating in 1978. He obtained licensure in both Washington and Idaho. His first practice was with his older brother, Dr. Bruce Bingham (UW 1965) in Mountain Home, Idaho. In 1979, he moved back to Washington and practiced in Smokey Point and then West Seattle. He had his practice in West Seattle for nearly 35 years, working with his wife, Janet, as his office manager. Dr Bingham has actively been involved with his church and his community for many years serving in leadership, umpiring softball and leading Boy Scouts. He is also active, and has held leadership roles, in Rotary and the West Seattle Chamber

of Commerce. He has been involved with three study clubs and has been active in organized dentistry. Dr. Bingham has been on the Peer Review Committee since 1980 and served as Committee Chair from 1999 through 2001. He and Janet have four adult children: Michael, Kristene, Jonathan and Kathleen, who is married to a dentist, Dr. Seth Perrins (UW, 2012) and 10 grandchildren. He is a 38-year tripartite member.

Dr. Karen Bloomquist Dr. Karen Bloomquist began her path in dentistry at the University of Washington, earning her BS in Dental Hygiene in 1968. She returned to University of Washington and graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1978. Over the years, Dr. Bloomquist served organized dentistry in a variety of leadership roles including being the WSDA Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee in 1994-95. She was a member of the SKCDS Access Committee for five years and served as Chair from 1994-95. She served as a Delegate to the House for four three-year terms between 1981 and 1996. She has also held various Board appointments with the State. She lives in West Seattle and retired from practice in 2013. She is a 36year member of the tripartite.

Dr. John Clifford Dr. John Clifford works in Auburn at his general practice, M Street Dental. He graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1982, and he is a 33-year member of the tripartite. Dr. Clifford lives in Seattle and maintains active licensing in both Colorado and Washington. Dr. John Clifford grew up in southeastern Michigan and attended the University of Michigan earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. He worked in the aerospace industry for 5 years before entering dental school. Dr. Clifford chose dentistry over aerospace because it provides a service directly to people and makes a difference in their lives. Dr. Clifford moved to the Pacific Northwest and attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry. After graduating from Dental School he earned a General Practice Residency at the dental clinic of St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. He then returned to Washington State where he opened a solo practice in rural Washington for 6 years. Dr. Clifford joined M Street Dental in 1986 and has been there full time since. He enjoys hiking, running, domestic and international travel. Dr. Clifford’s travels have taken him to Italy, Ireland, India, Ecuador, Galapagos Islands, Mexico, Costa Rica and Guatemala. BOOT CAMP 2015: Our Fifth Annual Practice Management Seminar for New Dentists Boot Camp 2015 was a resounding success with nearly 40 students and practicing dentists in attendance. It was the fifth year of this innovative program, and the response was very positive.

Boot Camp is a practice Management seminar designed for New Dentists and dental students. The concept was initiated several years ago by George Constantine of CBI Inc. The idea is to give young practitioners a “crash course” in starting a practice.

By bringing all the necessary vendors in one place, a young dentist can get a good idea of what is involved in the process. Whether participants plan to build a new facility, transition an existing practice or simply learn about the players involved, there is something for everyone at Boot Camp.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

The Seattle Center announced that, after thoughtful discussion and consideration involving major partners in the Seattle/King County Clinic, they have decided to hold another clinic on October 22-25, 2015 in Key Arena. The response from partners, volunteers, patients and the community-at-large to the 2014 clinic was universally positive, and the outcomes and lessons learned were greater than they imagined. They believe they can build upon these achievements to care for more people who are in need and help get them connected to local resources, as well as mentor communities around the State of Washington that have expressed interest in developing similar initiatives. While

they do not intend to make the clinic an annual event in Seattle, they do feel another year is appropriate to help further these opportunities for the benefit of our community.

Based on what they learned last year, they are also in the process of developing our own volunteer registration system and making improvements to the patient registration system. Give Kids a Smile Day 2015 There were three great options that enabled our local dental teams to participate in National Children’s Dental Health Month and Give Kids A Smile. These included the following: Work with elementary, middle or junior high schools in our area to identify financially challenged families with children that need immediate dental care. Work with a social service agency like the Boys and Girls Club in our area. Volunteer to treat children at the Washington Oral Health Foundation’s dental operatory in Rainier Vista Boys and Girls Club. On February 13, 2015, Dr. Judson A. Werner’s office partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Bellevue to host the 11th annual Give Kids a Smile Day. The staff of volunteers donated their time and $7,000 worth of dental care to help 20 kids get free dental exams, cleanings, fluoride, and fillings.

interest in aviation and aerospace. He is involved with the following associations: Seattle-King County Dental Society, Washington State Dental Society, American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Mark L. Di Re He was born in Missoula, Montana and moved with his family to Seattle when he was 13. They settled in Lake Hills in Bellevue, and he started school at Highland Junior High. He graduated from Sammamish High and moved on to the University of Washington for undergraduate school. Dental School was also at the UW, graduating in 1975. He was married during Dental School, and Karen and he lived in Seattle until after graduation.

They moved to Totem Lake Kirkland after starting his practice in Factoria in the fall of 1975. Their son Nick and daughter Angela were born in the early 80’s and prompted a move to Woodinville where they still live. He has been in private practice since graduation and continues to love the new challenges that that brings every year. As a member of WSDA, Dr. Di Re has volunteered for several posts over the years but spent most of his time there with the old Dental Care Committee and WDIA. He has been a clinical instructor for Patterson/Sirona and their CEREC dental technology for 12 years, and he has enjoyed being involved in the inclusion of technology into the practice of dentistry. Dr. Di Re is a 41-year member of the tripartite.

Dr. J. Bayard DuBois Dr. DuBois was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He then spent his junior high and high school years in Denver,

Colorado. He attended Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho before entering the University of Washington Dental School beginning in the fall of 1972.

Dr. Du Bois graduated from UW SOD in 1976. He has maintained a private practice in Kent since February of 1977. The practice of dentistry was a lifelong dream of Dr. DuBois. Each patient and each day has brought, along with challenges, a great sense of satisfaction and fulfillment in facilitating the health of his patients.

In addition to the dental side of life, Dr. DuBois has been actively involved as president and founder of the non-profit organization Breath of Aire. Breath of Aire is a Northwest regional choir whose purpose is to encourage their audience and raise funds for non-profit and private need–based groups. The Choir has 95 singers at the present time. They have recorded seven CD’s and sung internationally as well as locally for the past 15 years. Dr. DuBois has two children. Brienne, his daughter, is a special education teacher in San Diego.

His son Brenden is a worship pastor in the Seattle area and is a promoter and front man for a group of musical artists on the West Coast.

Dr. L. Ruth Fitzgerald Dr. Fitzgerald is a 38-year tripartite member. She graduated from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston in 1977 and is currently retired.

Dr. Stacy Gilmore Dr. Gilmore works in north Seattle and lives in Bellevue.

She is a 32-year member of the tripartite. Dr. Gilmore graduated from the University of Washington School of

Dentistry in 1983.

Dr. Bruce Hanson Dr. Hanson worked in Kent for 36 years. He is a 37year member of the tripartite. Dr. Hanson graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1975. He served in the Army from 1975 -1978. He is currently retired.

Dr. Philip N. Hodge Dr. Hodge has practiced general and cosmetic dentistry for nearly 30 years in his hometown Seattle, after receiving his education from the University of Washington (1977). Diligently continuing his dental education, he completed a two-year postgraduate cosmetic program at the University of Washington. An advocate of giving back to his community, Dr. Hodge volunteers at New Horizons, a shelter for homeless teenagers. He is an active advisory board member for the dental assisting program at Renton Technical College and volunteers time in the class room. He enjoys spending time with his family, participating in church organizations, photography, skiing and kayaking.

Dr. Peter W. Jacobsen Dr. Peter Jacobsen attended the University of Colorado and is a graduate of the University of Washington Dental School, class of 1979. Dr. Jacobsen works in Covington and has been a general dentist for 32 years.

This is nothing new! There are rules in place, including Federal HIPAA and ADA guidelines, to protect digital records and the rights of patients. Dental professionals continue to put themselves and their patients at risk when sending records via unencrypted email.

Jayne Dr. Don Jayne is a clinical instructor at the Kois Center for Advanced Dental Studies, past cosmetic dentistry lecturer for post-graduate students at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and past faculty member of the University of Washington School of Dentistry. Dr. Jayne has worked in multiple medical centers serving those with complex dental needs, including Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center and Swedish Hospital.

Dr. Edmund Hwa Kwan Dr. Kwan received his DDS from UCLA School of Dentistry in 1974. He spent the next year at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Brentwood, California in a General Practice Residency. After practicing general dentistry in Santa Monica, California for three years, he had the great good fortune to be accepted into the Endodontic Program at the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1978. He opened his Endodontics practice in Burien in 1980, and then he moved the practice to its present location in Tukwila in 1994. Dr. Kwan feels honored to be serving the endodontic needs of the people of South King County and to support the practices they come from. With the support of his colleague, Dr. Jim McGraw, Dr. Kwan is a consultant at the Woodland Park Zoo, Point Defiance Zoo, Cougar Mountain Zoo and the Seattle Aquarium.

He has treated gorillas, orangutans, hyenas, sun bears, polar bears, Siberian and Bengal tigers, ocelots, snow leopards, harbor seals, sea otters and numerous other amazing animals. Dr. Kwan’s son Steven joined his practice three years ago.

Dr. David M. Minahan Dr. David M. Minahan graduated with a BS in Chemistry from the University of Washington in 1971. He completed his DDS from UW in 1975. He has practiced in Kenmore since 1975. Dr. Minahan has supported his alma mater with positions in leadership including: Class of ’75 Representative and Past President, Dental Alumni Association, Dean’s Club Board of Directors and Past President and Fundraising Chair. He has also given his volunteer time to support organized dentistry. His leadership roles have included: Seattle-King County - Various Committees and Delegate to WSDA; Washington State Dental Association - Board of Directors, WSDA Past President, and ADA Delegate and ADA Council on Government Affairs. Dr. Minahan’s life outside of dentistry includes his family and various activities. He is married to Susan, and has two sons. Election Results are Final!

Congratulations to the winners of the Seattle-King County Dental Society’s most recent election. We appreciate all the members who ran for election.

Their dedication to organized dentistry is both vital to our success and deeply appreciated.

Our new president is Dr. Judson Werner. Dr. Werner is a University of Washington School of Dentistry graduate and practices general dentistry in Bellevue. He has already served SKCDS for many years, in a number of capacities including: Executive Council member, Treasurer, WSDA delegate, Communications Committee and Budget and Finance Committee. In addition to his work with SKCDS and the WSDA, Dr. Werner is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is a long time Give Kids a Smile volunteer and has also provided volunteer dentistry in Uganda and Jamaica. Dr. Werner, his wife, Amélie, his son, Tristan, and his daughter, Gisèle, enjoy sailing, wake boarding, skiing, traveling and hiking.

Dr. Amanda Spivey is a general dentist who practices in West Seattle. Dr. John W. Moore Dr. John William Moore attended the University of Washington for both his undergraduate and his DDS degree. He graduated from University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1974. Following graduation, he completed his Residency at the Eastman Dental Center. He practiced general dentistry for two years and then returned to UW SOD to obtain his Masters in Orthodontics in 1979. Dr. Moore retired in 2014 after practicing orthodontics for 35 years. He has also served as an Affiliate Professor at UW SOD in the departments of Prosthodontics, Restorative Dentistry and Orthodontics. For 31 years he has taught the Adult Orthodontic/Periodontics Seminar and has done clinic supervision. Dr. Moore has been involved with the NW Component of The Angle Society and has presented various and assorted presentations in that capacity. In 1984, he served as the Membership Chair for SKCDS. He is a 39-year member of the tripartite as well as the American Board of Orthodontics, the Washington State Society of Orthodontics and the American Association of Orthodontics. Dr. Moore has held leadership roles in several organizations including serving as a President for AAO and President for WSSO. He is married to Laura. They have two daughters, Hillary and Alissa.

Both are married, and Hillary has two children. In his free time, Dr. Moore enjoys golf, fishing and hiking.

Dr. Gregory Bruce Mortensen Dr. Mortensen graduated from Loyola University of Chicago in 1975. He worked in the Public Health Service for one year in 1975 and then began his practice in June 1979. Dr. Mortensen practices general dentistry with an office in Bellevue. In 1980, he married his wife Liz and they have been together for over 35 years. He has 4 children and 10 grandchildren. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Mortensen enjoys golf, fishing and travel. He is a 39-year tripartite member.

Dr. Stanley K. Nishimura Dr. Nishimura is originally from Idaho, but he attended high school in California. After three years at UCSB, studying Zoology, he was accepted to UCLA School of Dentistry, graduating in 1974. Dr. Nishimura then taught at UCLA and started private practice in Santa Barbara. In 1994, he accepted a faculty position to teach for one year at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. In 1997, Dr. Nishimura joined Dr. Thrall as a partner in Factoria Family Dentistry. When not practicing dentistry, Dr. Nishimura enjoys distance and trail running, cooking, gardening and traveling. He lives in Kirkland and is a 40-year tripartite member. Dr. Dennis P. Nordlund Dr. Nordlund was born and raised in Tacoma and attended the University of Washington for his undergraduate degree in Chemistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He attended the University of Washington Dental School graduating in 1976 and was an OKU honoree. After 2 ½ years in the US Public Health Service involving a General Practice Residency and a general assignment at an outpatient clinic, he returned to set up a private practice in Renton in 1979, where he practiced for 14 years. He then moved to the Fort Dent area of Tukwila in 1994 and continues to maintain a small general practice there. Dr. Nordlund attended the Pankey Institute in the 1990’s and has maintained a part time instructing position with the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Washington Dental School for 37 years. He has done sleep apnea therapy for the last 10 years on a very part-time basis. He is a 39-year tripartite member.

Dr. Don Pratten Dr. Don Pratten graduated from Southern Illinois University with DMD in 1977. He received a Master in Endodontics at University of Maryland in 1992. Dr. Pratten was on the Faculty at UW SOD from 2010 through 2014 as an Affiliate Associate Professor. He is licensed in both Virginia and Washington. He retired in 2014 and he is a 35-year member of the tripartite.

Dr. Steven D. Smutka Dr. Steven Smutka graduated from University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1973 and UCLA in

1978 with a Masters in Pediatric Dentistry. He served in the Air Force from 1974 through 1976. After being in practice in Seattle for 38 years, he retired in 2011.

Dr. Smutka is a 40-year tripartite member.

Dr. Lee M. Sorensen Dr. Lee Sorensen graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago Dental School in 1975. He lives and works in Seattle and has been in practice for 36-years.

He is 40-year tripartite member with active licenses in Wisconsin and Washington.

Dr. Robert W. Spreen A 1976 graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry, Dr. Spreen has maintained a private practice in Bellevue for 38 years. He has served in past years on the Public Information Committee and as Program Chair for Seattle-King County Dental Society. Dr. Spreen is a member of the Visiting Faculty at the Pankey Institute serving from his appointment in 1992 to the present. He is a 39-year tripartite member.

Dr. Wayne E. Svoboda Dr. Svoboda was born and raised in Oregon, Illinois, and he graduated from University of Illinois in 1971.

After a four-year tour of duty in the Navy based in San Diego, he attended Loyola University Dental School in Chicago graduating with honors in 1979. He served as a dental officer for 16 years in the Army Dental Corps with assignments in South Carolina, Erlangen Germany, San Antonio, Fort Lewis and Fort Campbell. His pediatric dentistry residency was completed at Madigan Army Medical Center in 1990 and he became board

certified in 1992. In 1995, he took over the pediatric practice of Dr. James Johnson in Federal Way where he remains in practice. He has been on active staff of Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, and during the Dr. Peter Domoto years, served as a volunteer clinical instructor in the pedo department of UW. His scientific interests included work on the specialized oral care of children with various forms of ectodermal dysplasia. He has served as a clinician volunteer in Germany and Bogota, Colombia.

He is a 34-year member of the tripartite. His primary life accomplishment is getting to the top of Mt. Rainier 21 times over a period of 30 years.

Dr. Mark C. Svore Dr. Mark Svore graduated from the University of Washington in 1975. He has maintained a 36-year practice in Seattle. Dr. Svore lives in Issaquah, and he is a 39-year tripartite member.

Dr. Donald W. Wenker Dr. Wenker graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1974 with his DDS. Prior to that, he graduated from University of North Dakota with a BS in Natural Sciences in 1971. Following graduation from Dental School, Dr. Wenker joined the Air Force and received his General Practice Residency in July 1976. In 1978, Dr. Wenker moved to Woodinville and began his solo practice. He was in practice in Woodinville for 34 years.

He sold his practice in 2012 and has been enjoying retired life since then. He is 40-year member of the tripartite.

OFFICE DESIGN

By Al Munk DDS There are lots of resources that explain how to design a dental office. They deal with issues of beauty, efficiency, flow and function. I’m going to cover a few other features of dental office design, that may not at first seem obvious.

Not everyone gets to design a dental office for themselves. Those that do, seldom get more than one chance to do their best at making a comfortable, functional office. Six years ago, when I got kicked out of my old building, I had a chance to design my own office in a new space and I will go over the mistakes I made with you and point out a few new ideas that you may want to incorporate in your new office.

Next, I recommend a big screen TV in the Doctor’s Private Office. There are just some events that should not be taped, and must be seen live, regardless of how many root canals are lined up waiting.

Who wants to watch a tape of the World Series? This also provides another use of the couch, in addition to sleeping on it. Incidentally, there is a third use of the Private Office Couch that I won’t go into here, but you can use your imagination. Always install a lock on the door to the Dentist’s Private Office if you intend for the office couch to be fully utilized.

Always know your source—some of you know me well, others may only know me from these articles I give you a few times a year. I am certainly not a professional dental office designer, or in fact, a designer of any kind. The truth is, I am rather unconscious of my surroundings at any one time. I could probably live quite comfortably in a refrigerator box as long as it had a big screen TV with cable connection. Thus, I may not be the best person to seek out for office design concepts, but I have an article due, so here goes.
