President’s Message

Reflecting back over the year!

In reflecting back over the past year I am pleased with our successes and have some regrets over the disappointments. Overall, we have some incredible members doing amazing things in our community and for the profession of dentistry.

A special tip of the hat to Stephanie Kavanaugh and the members of the Forensics Committee for their quick and effective commitment to the tragedy of the Oso mud slide. Their action is a great example SKCDS members responding to community needs.

We have a different opportunity, perhaps broader and not as urgent, coming up on four days in October. The Seattle Center is bringing in a charitable organization, Remote Area Medical (RAM) to provide health care exams and treatment for the under served in Western Washington.

They have asked for our help and support. The goal is to identify needs, provide some urgent care, then steer those needing more care into a “dental home” utilizing community clinics. Our local coordinator is Dr. Jeff Parrish, who has worked with RAM before. In May we will be asking for a commitment from about 140 members to volunteer. There will be a special part of the RAM

website that will go live at that time so you can volunteer your—and ideally your staff’s—time.

Another pathway for good works through the Society is the SKCD Foundation. Mark your calendars for the next Foundation Gala on November 15th at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel. Dr. Cindy Pauley and the Event Planning Committee are making great strides for a fantastic bash with a Great Gatsby theme. This is a wonderful way to support the great works that the Foundation supports, including the Swedish Dental Clinic, Northwest Kidney Centers project and Medical Teams International.

We have much to celebrate this spring. Membership is up for the first time in four years; we have members doing great things in the community; and through SKCDS, WSDA and the ADA we are improving dental health and serving the needs of our member dentists.

I have enjoyed serving as your president over this past year. I have gained enormous appreciation for our membership and all that they do. I am confident that Dr. Audrey Tatt, our incoming president, will do a wonderful job. I invite you to participate in organized dentistry.

THIRD ANNUAL SIGNING DAY The third annual Signing Day event was a great success as we welcomed 23 new members into organized dentistry. The ADA initiated this recruitment concept a few years ago, and the Seattle-King County Dental Society is actively participating. Just as student athletes sign agreements with a college or a pro team; we are asking our students to commit to joining the tripartite as they move into their dental career. We ask Fourth Year Dental Students to “sign on” with organized dentistry. Signing Day was held at the iconic Northlake Tavern & Pizza. We welcomed Dr. Laura Williams, representing the North Central Dental Society, Dr. Ted Baer from the Pierce County Dental Society and Dr. Serv Wahan, current President of the Snohomish Dental Society. The event was co-sponsored by the WSDA and WDIA. Dr. Randy Ogata brought this program to Seattle about 3 years ago, and it has become a very successful way to welcome graduating dental students into the tripartite.

BOOT CAMP 2014: Practice Management Seminar for New Dentists Boot Camp 2014 was a resounding success with 37 students and practicing dentists in attendance. It was the fourth year of this innovative program, and the response was very positive. Boot Camp is a practice management seminar designed for New Dentists and dental students. The concept was initiated over five years ago by George Constantine of CBI Inc. The idea is to give young practitioners a “crash course” in starting a practice. By bringing all the necessary vendors in one place, a young dentist can get a good idea of what was involved in the process. Whether participants plan to build a new facility, transition an existing practice or simply learn about the players involved, there is something for everyone at Boot Camp.

After feedback, Boot Camp was moved from a Friday event to a Saturday morning and scheduled in April rather than May. This allowed many more students and young dentists to be involved. In fact, we had another great year with increased attendance. The date change allowed SKCDS to meet one of our major goals, which is reaching more students with practice management information. LET’S EXPLAIN IT AGAIN

Several years ago, I wrote in this column an overview of the tripartite system consisting of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association and the Macomb Dental Society. Based on some of the recent calls I have received, I think it may be time to review the system again. I want everyone to know who does what, why and how.

First, we have our component society, the Macomb Dental Society. We are your friendly, neighborhood, bunch of buddies that get together for fun social events like golf, skiing, scuba diving, pistol shooting and much more. We also provide continuing education in a variety of formats on countless topics to keep you informed as well as to aid you in obtaining the necessary CE for your dental license renewal. We provide peer review to help both you and your patient settle a dispute involving appropriateness and/or quality of care issues without having to resort to the unpleasantness of the legal system. We maintain the data base and various placement lists to help you find needed employees or find employment opportunities for yourself. We have a newsletter, Bits&Burs, and the Macomb Dental Journal you are holding right now to keep you up-to-date on events and topics of interest. We are your first go-to resource when you have questions that fall in the purview of organized dentistry.

But, there are things we do not do. We do not lobby or provide overt political support of any candidate or position. If we did, a certain portion of your Macomb dues would be non-tax deductible. Therefore we choose not to, therefore all of the Macomb portion of your dues is tax deductible. We have no formal position on the non-dental issues of the day. If you want to know how we stand on the death penalty, gun control or stem cell research, you are out of luck, because we have no position. If you want us to take action against a dental insurance carrier or take on a government agency or regulation on your behalf, there is little we can do. These are the situations where you have to go one more rung up on the ladder and contact the constituent society, the Michigan Dental Association.

The Michigan Dental Association, headquartered in Okemos, MI, performs the functions that we cannot or will not do, plus offers a little bit of overlap as well. To list everything they do would take up this entire page. Aside from the numerous products and services offered by their for-profit subsidiary, Insurance & Financial Group, the MDA offers a large range of CE including that which occurs at Annual Session. They provide the state level of peer review. They work with the legislature on various issues via our lobbying efforts and frequently meet with the Michigan legislators who write the laws that affect the way you practice dentistry. They provide news and information through various media, most notably their Michigan Dental Association Journal. They are the number one (continued on page 8)

Tooting Your Own Horn Is Important!

Al & Laura Ries, The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR. Many of us hear from the media that dentistry is expensive, and that we dentists are focused on getting rich and don’t really care about our patients. WE know that is a false perception on the part of the media and—let’s be honest—on the part of some legislators. We also know that many of us volunteer countless hours to provide free dentistry to the most vulnerable among us. Shoot, many of us provide free treatment to our existing patients who are going through a rough patch and need a helping hand.

So, with all that, how come there is such a negative impression of dentistry?

It is because we, as a profession, fail to toot our own horns in terms of what we ARE doing to help others. Sure, I know you are reluctant to promote your volunteer work because you are afraid your practice will be flooded by people looking for free dentistry. I know many of you are reluctant to share what you are doing because you don’t want to appear boastful. We are also all so busy running our practices that promoting our good deeds doesn’t get very high on our priority list—we’re more focused on getting new patients in the door and treating the ones we have.

We need to overcome this reluctance and find the time. It is that important.

As the quote I started this article with says, we “need the validity that only third-party endorsements can bring.” We need to tell our story about the good works we are doing and work to get the media (the third-party) interested in covering our efforts. A front page story about how one of our members is providing free care to the veterans in our community has an important—and cumulative—impact on how we, as dentists, are perceived by the media and general public. If we get enough of these types of stories in the media, then we can slowly but surely change how we and our profession are viewed. (continued on page 11)

resource for whatever our members need. It can all be summed up by their mission statement: helping member dentists succeed.

And then we have the American Dental Association. Their key role is advocacy for the profession on a national level both through lobbying and legislative action, as well as through the media. Yes, they have a Journal and yes they approve materials through the Seal of Acceptance program and a whole host of other services and functions. But their most important role is that of being the face and voice of the dental profession.

Similar to a three-legged stool, no one or two parts of the tripartite can stand without all three legs being in place. You cannot just join Macomb (and have had that request more than once); you have to join all three. We need all three parts in order to have all three parts work. We are blessed with a new 75% market share in the tripartite which makes us a unified, relevant voice as to the direction of our profession. Thanks to the tripartite structure, we are in control and that is the way it should be.

SKCDF Did you know that our affiliated organization, the Seattle-King County Dental Foundation, has given away over $1.142 million dollars in grants since its inception in 1992?

Our Foundation’s mission is to proactively eliminate dental infection and pain in the King County population that lacks resources and/or access to dental care.

The photos (LEFT) are an acknowledgment of grant that our Foundation recently made to the new HealthPoint 10-chair Dental Clinic that opened in Midway this past fall. We were particularly pleased to contribute to this Clinic as the Midway community is an area with high rates of poverty and uninsured people, a shortage of health care and social service providers, and a high number of racial and ethnic minorities.

There are 37,000 Midway residents living in poverty and 25% of the community is uninsured, compared to 12.1% in King County as a whole.

You should be very proud of what your Foundation is doing for our community. We hope that you will mark Saturday, November 15th on your calendars and join us for our annual Gala (see below for more details)! The Gala proceeds are the primary source of funding for our Foundation’s grants like this—so, come help us raise money for a great cause and have fun doing it!

Here are just a few highlights: • Our dental clinic in the Swedish Community Specialty Clinic saw 1,041 patients who were all low income and referred to us by the dental community health clinics. Of those patients, we treated 4,421 teeth, provided 54 lab tests and saw 17 patients for oral pathology testing. All of these patients did not go to hospital emergency rooms—the most expensive way to treat dental pain. We provided $1,523,604 in donated care to these patients in 2013 alone.

• Our Foundation also funds a program which works to clear kidney dialysis patients for life-saving transplants. Since the program started, we have cleared 19 people for a successful transplant and several more are now on a waiting list for a suitable donor.

• We provide critical funds for dental supplies for the PROVAIL’s Johnny Johnson Memorial Dental Clinic. This Clinic treats adults with disabilities many of whom face significant challenges in order to access dental care.

Another way to look at this is to consider the millions of dollars that dental insurance companies pay for advertising. We, as a Dental Society, don’t have those kinds of resources to fund that sort of campaign—and I am not sure we would want to do that even if we did. Positive stories in the media about what YOU are doing can have the same—or even greater—impact than that very expensive paid advertising campaign.

Now, you are probably reading this and thinking: “Great idea, Shane, but I don’t have the time to do this.” Well, I have a suggestion for you to consider. Send a brief report of what you are doing to the Dental Society’s Central Office. They can create press releases to send to media outlets and try to interest reporters in learning more about your efforts. In short, they can act as your press agent. All you need to do is to think about your most recent volunteer effort—ideally in King County—figure out how much the care you donated is worth, what types of patients you helped and anything else you think is news-worthy or interesting about the event and email it to skcds@skcds.com or you can call them at 206.448.6620.

Congratulations to the winners of the Seattle-King County Dental Society’s most recent election. We appreciate all the members who ran for election. Their dedication to organized dentistry is both vital to our success and deeply appreciated.

Our new president is Dr. Audrey Tatt. Dr. Tatt has been a member of the Executive Council for six years.

She has been a member of the Program & CDE, Leadership and Membership Committees for many years. After obtaining her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, she earned her dental degree at Northwestern University. Dr. Tatt practices general dentistry in Bellevue and is a member of Pierre Fauchard Academy. She has volunteered with the Medical Teams International dental vans and done screenings for Special Olympics. When she is not practicing dentistry or volunteering, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, Ian and Kylie.

Our new president-elect is Dr. Judson Werner. Dr. Werner is a University of Washington School of Dentistry graduate and practices general dentistry in Bellevue.

He has already served SKCDS for many years, in a number of capacities including: Executive Council member, Treasurer, WSDA delegate, Communications Committee and Budget and Finance Committee. In addition to his work with SKCDS and the WSDA, Dr.

Werner is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is a long time Give Kids a Smile volunteer and has also provided volunteer dentistry in Uganda and Jamaica.

Dr. Werner, his wife, Amélie, his son, Tristan, and his daughter, Gisèle, enjoy sailing, wake boarding, skiing, hiking, and traveling. We have two new members of the Executive Council.

Dr. Noah Letwin has been elected to a three year term after serving a one year term last year. Dr. Letwin got his dental degree from the University of Maryland and a certificate from Swedish Medical Center General Practice Residency. He also holds a PhD in Pharmacology and a MS in Biochemistry, all from The George Washington University. He is currently the dental director of the Swedish Community Specialty Clinic and in private practice in Seattle. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Rebecca, and his two daughters, Samantha and Henrietta. Together, they enjoy biking, camping, Nordic skiing and SCUBA diving as a family.

Dr. Megan Mulligan is a general dentist who practices in the Green Lake area of Seattle Dr. Mulligan, after attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where she was class president. After practicing near her hometown in Minnesota, she and

her husband recently relocated to Seattle when he accepted a position with Amazon. She has just finished a one-year term as Secretary to the Executive Council and is active in the Membership and New Dentist Committees. In her spare time, she, her husband and their golden doodle, Maya, enjoy exploring all that the Northwest has to offer.

Several Seattle-King County Dental Society members were elected to serve as delegates to the Washington State Dental Association’s governing body, the House of Delegates. Each member will serve a three year term. The Class of 2016 includes Dr. Judson Werner, president-elect, and Drs. Craig E. Neal, Thomas P. Sweeney, Timothy A. Hess, Christine K. Shigaki, Karim Z. Alibhai and William E. Hooe. There was a tie for the one remaining delegate position which the Executive Council will address at its May meeting.

Last but not least, the Society thanks our outgoing Executive Council member and delegates for their dedication over the years. Dr. Lourdes M. Acuesta Dr. Lourdes M. Acuesta completed dental school in the Philippines, graduating in 1970. She has been a member in good standing with the ADA for 31 years. Dr. Acuesta practices and lives in Seattle.

Dr. William Bethel Dr. William Bethel is a longtime fan of the University of Washington, first earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and then his DDS in 1974.

He started and maintained his practice in Renton immediately thereafter. He has been an instructor at the UW Dental School, is a member of the Interlake Dental Study Club, and has been an active member of SKCDS and WSDA for 40 years.

He has coached numerous sports teams for his sons and has supported all of their endeavors personally and financially for the last 25 years.

He has taken advantage of UW’s fantastically inexpensive education for his two sons: one graduated, one freshman. He plans on retiring when his children say he can.

Dr. Dale S. Bloomquist Dr. Dale S. Bloomquist graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1969 and earned his MS in oral surgery from Georgetown University in 1973. He is Associate Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the UW Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department and is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Bloomquist is also an attending surgeon at several hospitals in the area.

Dr. David Branch Dr. David Branch served in the US Army from 1963–1969, and upon separation, later graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1973. He also worked as a clinical instructor at the UW. Dr. Branch has been a member in good standing for 35 years. When he is not at his practice in Seattle, Dr. Branch enjoys gardening in his P-Patch.

Dr. Daniel E. Broughton Dr. Daniel E. Broughton graduated from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1966. He has been a member in good standing with the tripartite for 42 years. Dr. Broughton lives in Sammamish.

Dr. Ronald A. Bryant Dr. Ronald A. Bryant graduated from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1974 and then went on to receive his MS specializing in periodontal prosthodontics from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1976. He is board certified by both the American Board of Prosthodontics and the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. Dr. Bryant has diplomate and fellow status on numerous dental boards and colleges.

He and his wife Cheryl have been married for 42 years and have two grown sons, two daughters-inlaw and two granddaughters. In his spare time he enjoys nature and wildlife photography and flying.

Dr. Irving Cohen Dr. Irving Cohen graduated from Columbia University School of Dentistry in 1971 and then served in the US Air Force until 1975. He received his degree from University of Washington School of Dentistry that same year, specializing in Periodontics. Dr. Cohen has been a member in good standing of the ADA for 41 years and served on the Forensics and Peer Review Committees for several years.

Dr. Michael Cohen Dr. Michael Cohen received his dental degree across the border in Canada from McGill University in 1974. He earned his Master’s and Certificate in Periodontics from the UW School of Dentistry and is currently Affiliate Assistant Professor there in the Department of Periodontics. Dr. Cohen also founded the Seattle Study Club.

Dr. Colin Craig Dr. Colin Craig graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1974 and served as a dentist in the US Navy for the next three years. He currently practices in Burien. Dr. Craig is a member of both the Premier Dental Study Group and the Burien Dental Study Seminar.

He enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, and grandchildren, especially while taking advantage of the many outdoor activities available in this region.

Dr. Daryl Eckland Dr. Daryl Eckland did his undergraduate studies in Economics and Zoology at the University of Washington. He graduated from the UW School of Dentistry, Class of 1980 (an exceptionally smart class!). His career highlights have been watching all three of his sons graduate from Dental School: Keagan and Colby, from the UW School of Dentistry, Classes of 2007 and 2009, respectively, and Kale from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Class of 2010. (They all own practices locally, so you can imagine the topic of conversation at the family dinner table!) Another highlight is attending an educationally stimulating monthly Study Club, which was formed by Dr. Eckland and 11 of his Dental School classmates.

Give Kids A Smile The access to care issue was addressed in a very personal way in February of 2014. Several of our SKCDS member dentists did their part to impact children’s oral health in their neighborhoods and communities. Dr. Judson Werner provided dental screenings to children at the Bellevue Boys & Girls Club (see photos below) and it was his 10th year providing free services to low-income children in the community. In Seattle, Dr. Lina Kim, and her staff were meeting with elementary school kids at Coe Elementary in Magnolia, to educate and provide

dental supplies. In South King County, Dr. Stuart Vendeland participated providing a free Saturday clinic for low-income children in the Renton and Kent area. Dr. Vendeland and 12 staff members provided a total of $9,868 worth of care in one day and they have participated in Give Kids A Smile for over 30 years! In Burien, Dr. Anthony Vuong and his staff visited local elementary schools. Dr. Tonya Loving volunteered to speak at five elementary schools in the King County area spreading the word about dental hygiene and giving out toothbrushes and dental supplies. In Issaquah, Dr. Thoa Nguyen visited local elementary school children and even shared a video of the presentation she and her

staff did for the kids! Dr. Nguyen wowed the young crowd as the “superhero dentist” fighting cavities! Our members know how to reach out to the community with compassion and creativity!

We want to extend a special thanks to the Washington Dental Service Foundation for providing funds for dental supplies for children. Thanks to WSDF’s annual gift, we are able to supply our members with “goody bags” when they volunteer to provide a Give Kids a Smile event or visit a school. Early education continues to be one of the best options for long term oral health success, and we thank our members for giving their time and energy to this important program.

Dr. Gary Feldman Dr. Gary Feldman completed his undergraduate studies and dental school at the University of Minnesota. He then went to medical school at the University of Washington. Upon completion of medical school, he undertook an Oral and Maxillofacial Residency at the UW and in Arnhem, Netherlands. He also did a General Surgery Residency at Swedish Medical Center. Dr. Feldman has been in the private practice of Oral and Maxillofacial dentistry for more than 30 years at Swedish. He practices the full scope of the specialty, including the surgical management of trauma, benign and malignant pathology, orthognathic cosmetic and reconstructive surgery including congenital deformities, as well as implant and dentoalveolar surgery. He has been involved in administrative and leadership roles in both the medical and dental communities. Dr. Feldman has been actively involved in oral and maxillofacial education, including fellowship training in advanced surgical maxillofacial techniques and is currently an adjunct Associate Professor in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, involved in the training of chief residents. In his personal life, Dr. Feldman is blessed with excellent health, a great 43-year marriage, three fabulous grown children and 2 ½ grandchildren.

Dr. Brett Fidler Dr. Brett Fidler received both of his degrees from the University of Washington: the first in 1975 and his MS in Dentistry and Certificate in Orthodontics in 1992. Since then he has taught Orthodontics at the UW and has been certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He has also served as President of the Washington State Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Fidler resides in Bellevue with his wife, Susan, and their dog Bounder. They have two grown children and three grandchildren. During his leisure time, Dr. Fidler enjoys playing golf, gardening and spending time with his family.

Dr. Richard Gile Dr. Richard Gile graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1960. His practice specialized in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthodontics. Dr. Gile retired in 1999 and lives in Bellevue. He has been an member of the ADA for 41 years.

Dr. Roger J. Harper Dr. Roger J. Harper graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1975 and received his Master’s from the University of Washington in 1977, specializing in Prosthodontics. Dr. Harper retired in 2011, and he currently lives in South Dakota.

Dr. Michael Harris Dr. Michael Harris received his Bachelor’s in Zoology from the University of Washington and graduated from the UW School of Dentistry in 1974. He currently practices in Ballard. Outside of work he explores a wide range of hobbies, including Seattle sports, travel, hiking in the San Juan Islands, golfing and walking his dog, Desi.

Dr. Michael Higashi Dr. Michael Higashi graduated from the University of Washington in 1978. He served with the Dental Quality Assurance Commission from 1990–1996.

Over the past 23 years he has also served as an examiner for the Western Regional Board in several capacities. For 15 years, he has been an Affiliate Faculty member in the Restorative Department at UW. He lives on Mercer Island and practices in downtown Seattle. He is a 37 year member of the tripartite.

Dr. Patrick Hogan After graduating from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1974, Dr. Patrick Hogan and his wife Jan spent 2 ½ years in the Army at Fort Bragg, NC. In 1977 they returned to Seattle, and Dr. Hogan began working as an associate at West Seattle Dental Center. He was 28 years old.

37 years later he remains here, now the oldest member of their partnership. He continues to practice, very much enjoying what he does and the staff he gets to work with. He currently has no plans to retire, but as they say, time will tell.

He and Jan have been married for 42+ years. They raised three wonderful daughters and, so far, have four grandchildren. They love the West Seattle community and live on Alki Point.

As a younger self, Dr. Hogan was very involved with basketball and helped found Hoopaholics, a basketball camp for old guys which raised thousands of dollars for Childhaven. Since the hips were replaced (basketball?), he and Jan now spend much enjoyable time boating on Puget Sound and in the San Juans.

Dr. Douglas E. Holmes Dr. Douglas E. Holmes received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1970. From 1970 to 1972 he was employed as a process/design engineer for the Dow Chemical Company in the San Francisco Bay area. An interest in dentistry and a desire to return to the Northwest brought him back to attend Dental School at the UW, where he graduated in 1976. Dr. Holmes started a private practice in the south end of West Seattle, where he still practices today. Following graduation, he served part-time as an Affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics and has for 30 years. His family members include his wife Connie, his son Matt and his daughter Andrea. His other interests include an addiction to golf and other outdoor activities.

Dr. Robert L. Horchover Dr. Robert L. Horchover attended the University of Washington for both his undergraduate degree and his DDS, which he earned in 1960. He practiced in Juneau, Alaska from 1960 through 1986, during which time he was on the staff at Bartlett Memorial Hospital. He provided seasonal dental care in select remote southeast Alaskan villages, aboard a custom built 60-foot vessel that included two operatories and staff quarters, for one week a month from April through October. During his career in Alaska he served as President of the Alaska Dental Society in 1964–1965, and as an elected delegate to the ADA, among other leadership roles.

Since 1994, Dr. Horchover has focused his practice exclusively on dental sleep medicine, treating obstructive sleep apnea patients with oral devices.

He is also owner of Airway Metric, LLC, which markets a system he invented or identifying a target treatment position, a conformation manibular starting position in both anterior/vertical alignment and obtaining a bite registration for treating obstructive sleep apnea. He is a member of the National Sleep Foundation, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is a 41 year member of the tripartite. His wife Robin has served as his Director of Operations for many years. He resides in Brown’s Point, Washington.

Dr. Perry J. Jones III Dr. Perry J. Jones III was most of the way through dental school when he lost the fingers on his right hand in an accident. Dr. Jones became adept at using solely his left hand and graduated on time from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1974. He founded his practice in 1978 and has been there ever since. Dr. Jones has four children. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, surfing and adding to his vast collection of Native American baskets. In his spare time he runs a tie business that he inherited from his mother.

Dr. Dennis Kuplan Dr. Dennis Kuplan graduated from the University of California – Los Angeles in 1972. He has been a member in good standing with the tripartite for 36 years. Dr. Kuplan retired in 1996 and lives in Bellevue.

Dr. Marshall Langohr Dr. Marshall Langohr graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 1976. He has been a member in good standing with the tripartite for 38 years.

Dr. Langohr practices in Seattle.

Dr. Gerald McCann Dr. Gerry McCann is a lifelong Husky. He earned his BS in Zoology in 1970, his DDS in 1974 and his Certificate in Endodontics and Master of Science in Dentistry in 1976, all from the University of Washington. Following graduation, Dr. McCann joined Endodontics Northwest, where he practiced for 37 years in both Northgate and Bellevue, retiring in July 2013. He served as President of the Washington State Association of Endodontists. Dr. McCann held a faculty appointment as an Affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Washington where he taught, part time, for 34 years. He was also a member of the Interlake Dental Study Club for 30 years. Gerry and his wife Nancy are currently raising their two daughters, Molly and Katie, at their home on Mercer Island.

Dr. Peter Milgrom Dr. Peter Milgrom received his DDS from the University of California, San Francisco in 1972. He is Professor of Oral Health Sciences and Pediatric Dentistry in the School of Dentistry and adjunct Professor of Health Services in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington. He also directs the UW Northwest Center to Reduce Oral Health Dispartities. He holds academics

appointments at Case Western University, University of Rochester and University of California, San Francisco. He had a previous position at the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine. He maintains a dental practice limited to the care of fearful patients and was the Director of the UW Dental Fears Research Clinic for nearly 25 years. Dr. Milgrom’s work includes research on xylitol, the effectiveness of fluoride varnish and iodine in preschoolers, clinical efficacy and safety of diammine silver fluoride, motivational strategies to increase prenatal and well child visits in rural communities, and studies of cognitive interventions in pediatric and adult dental fear. The NIH, the Office of Head Start, and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, and HRSA have supported his work. Dr. Milgrom is the author of five books and over 280 scientific articles. Dr. Milgrom was Distinguished Dental Behavioral Scientist of the International Association for Dental Research for 1999. In 1999, and again in 2000, his work was recognized by the Giddon Award for research in the behavioral sciences in dentistry. He received the Barrows Milk Award from IADR in 2000, recognizing his work for public health, including the development of the Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) program in Washington.

In 2003, Dr. Milgrom received a Special Commendation Award from the National Legal Aid and Defenders Association and the UW Medical Center Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award. In 2010, he received the Aubrey Sheiham Research Award for his work on xylitol. He serves on scientific review committees for the NIDCR, NIMHHD, NINDS, Center for Scientific Review at NIH and as a consultant to the FDA. In 2005, Dr. Milgrom was appointed the SAAD Visiting Professor of Pain and Anxiety Control at the King’s College Dental Institute, University of London, for a six-year term. In 2008 he was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Bergen, Norway. In 2012 he received the University of California, San Francisco Dental Alumni Gold Medal. In 2012 he was also awarded the Norton Ross Award for Council of Scientific Affairs of the American Dental Association.

This year he received the Irwin M. Mandel Distinguished Mentor Award from the IADR. Dr. Alan Moritis Dr. Alan Moritis received his Bachelor of Science degree from Boston College in 1970 and his DDS

from Georgetown University in 1974. He served his General Practice Residency with the US Public Health Service in Seattle from 1974-1975. Dr. Moritis has volunteered at the PROVAIL Dental Clinic since 1987 and has been a faculty member of the University of Washington’s Department of Oral Medicine since 1991. He won the Seattle Rotary’s Service Above Self Award for Community Achievement in 2007.

He has been happily married for 40 years to Kathleen Robinson Moritis. They have two lovely adult children, Julia and Edward. Julia is a dentist and has been gradually taking over his practice in downtown Seattle. Dr. Moritis spends a lot of his free time at home with his wife, playing with his new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, landscape gardening and thinking about (and fishing for) salmon. He is active in his church, East Shore Unitarian, and attends Boston College and Georgetown functions. He and his wife have spent a long weekend in Ashland, Oregon every year for the last 35 years and have seen every Shakespeare play they perform. They love the area: the restaurants, shops and outdoor activities, such as whitewater rafting. Dr. Moritis spends a week every year at a Forest Service cabin in Yakutat, Alaska, fishing for Silvers. He has been going up there for the last 29 years. Five years ago he and his wife listed the top ten places in the world that they wanted to see, compared lists, and are going to one each year.

Last year they went to Southern Africa, and this year they are going to Eastern Europe. Dr. Moritis and his family have been active in the Seattle area Lithuanian-American community and used to be members of their folk dancing troupe, Lietutis.

They performed at the Vancouver BC World’s Fair and at festivals in LA, Chicago, Hamilton, Ontario and of course, at Folk Life in Seattle.

Dr. Thomas H. Morton, Jr. Dr. Thomas H. Morton, Jr. graduated from Creighton University in 1972. His practice specialized in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He served for many years on the UW Dental School’s Oral Health Sciences Department. He also served on the SKCDS Forensics and Recruitment/Retention committees for several years. Dr. Morton retired in 2011 and currently lives in Hawaii.

Dr. Kenneth Nishimoto Kenneth Nishimoto graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1978. He has been a member in good standing with the tripartite for 37 years. Dr. Nishimoto practices in Seattle.

Dr. Alecia Nowak Dr. Alecia Nowak graduated from the Oregon Health and Science University in 1982. She has been a member in good standing of the tripartite for 31 years. Dr. Nowak retired last year and currently resides in Seattle.

Dr. Richard Quinn Dr. Richard Quinn graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1970 with a Bachelor’s in Biology and received his degree from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1974. He completed a GPR in the US Air Force and was a dentist in the USAF in North Carolina for several years. In 1979, he received his Certificate in Periodontics from the UW and has been an Assistant Professor in the Periodontics Department for ten years. Dr. Quinn is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and a director of the South Shore Study Club.

Dr. Eric W. Ranta Dr. Eric W. Ranta graduated with the Class of 1974 at the University of Washington Dental School, completed a GPR with the US Air Force in Fort Worth, Texas, then worked three years at Carswell Air Force Base in California. Dr. Ranta has been in private practice since 1977 in partnership with two excellent dentists: Dr. John R. Fitzgerald and Dr. David S. Russell. He is a proud 35 year member of the Cast Restoration Study Club. Still searching for that perfect swing!

Dr. Roderick Robinson Dr. Roderick Robinson graduated from Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1974. Upon graduation, he served as a dental officer in the US Navy. He was stationed at Camp LeJeune Navy Medical Center in North Carolina. After his separation from the Navy, he returned to Redmond and joined a group practice with Dr. Alvin Taniguchi, Dr. John Huleen and Dr. Mike Molvar. He practiced in the same facility until the sale of his practice to Dr. Andy Traxler. In 1978, he began teaching at Highline Community College in the Dental Assisting program. Assistant Professor in the Restorative Department, where he continues to work. He has been a member of the R.V. Tucker Study Club since 1976 and has given presentations at ADA Annual Meetings and Chicago Midwinter Meetings on the Club’s behalf. He has mentored Tucker Study Clubs on a substitute basis.

He is also a member of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He has been active in the community, particularly the Kirkland-Redmond Boys & Girls Club as Board President. He and his wife Marilyn are involved in church activities at St. John’s in Kirkland and have a son and daughter both living in the area, as well as two grandchildren.

Dr. Ward Smalley Dr. Ward Smalley graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1977, then received his Master’s from the UW in 1986. Dr. Smalley specializes in Orthodonics, Dentofacial Orthopedics and Prosthodontics. He has been a member in good standing with the ADA for 33 years. Dr. Smalley practices and resides in Edmonds.

Dr. Michael D. Spektor After completing undergraduate school at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Dr. Spektor graduated from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1975. Following a General Practice Residency at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago, he completed his Certificate in Periodontics in 1979 at the University of Washington in Seattle under Dr. Saul Schluger. As an undergrad dental student he was Editor of the ASDA News. From 1979–1997, Dr. Spektor taught undergraduate and graduate dental students at the UW as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics. For the last 35 years he has also maintained a private practice in Bellevue. He served on numerous committees, including Chair of Faculty Governance and Graduate Periodontics Admissions. He was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon at the UW and served as Chair. Dr. Spektor has been very involved with various dental organizations. He served two years as Editor and one year as Secretary of SKCDS. In addition, Dr. Spektor served on numerous WSDA committees, including marketing and is currently Chair of the WSDA DentPAC. He was President of the Washington State Society of Periodontics and served on that Board for many years. He is also a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, was Past President of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity and is currently on the fraternity’s Long Range Planning Committee. He is married to Dr. Wendy Shultz Spektor and has two sons, Jordan and Jeremy.

Dr. Thomas Sturgell Dr. Thomas A. Sturgell graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 1970. In 1974, he completed his DDS degree from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. He served in the US Navy from 1974–1976. Dr. Sturgell was in private practice in Kirkland for 34 years until his retirement in July 2008. He is a 40 year member of the tripartite.

At the Movies

By Al Munk DDS The other day I went to the movies. I’ve been to a lot of them during my life and decided it was high time to write about them. This particular movie was a selection by my wife and it turned out to be a real dog, I mean a first class woofer. This is not all a bad thing as it means the next time we go out, I get to pick the movie. Since my wife and I have nothing in common, this turns out to be a problematic situation.

I like the guy stuff with guns and girls and she likes the literary stuff with lots of big words and subtle looks and sighs. Believe me when I tell you, there is no middle ground to be found here.

As a result of this situation, for a long time we stopped going to the movies altogether but recently have given it another go. Seeing this crummy matinee performance may put a stop to this trend.

I started my movie-watching career at the Saturday Matinee like most kids.

The Columbia Theatre in Longview, Washington was where it all started. It took just twenty-five cents to get in and another dime for some Milk Duds and an afternoon of pleasure was guaranteed. I especially liked the action features like Tarzan and they usually showed a short sci-fi serial at the beginning of the show with real fakey spaceships and aliens. Along with the movie feature came an education about the relationship between boys and girls. There was always a little action going on in this regard in the darker corners of the theatre. More on this later.

But let’s get back to the basics of movie-going. There are a few essential bits of knowledge one must have to comfortably negotiate this medium. First, upon entering the theatre, go to the aisle that is least direct. If the easy entrance is down the right aisle, go to the left aisle. There will be more empty seats here. If you enter the theatre at a few minutes before showtime and there are seven people there, the show is going to be a dog. Sorry. The public is all-knowing in this regard. Next, never sit behind an empty seat. If you do, just as the curtain opens, LeBron James will come and sit in front of you.

Instead find a short person and go sit behind them. Lastly, stay for the credits when the movie is over. It is tacky to leave early.

Getting back to the boy-girl thing, early on I suspected the movie theatre was prime territory for such interactions. But it was a long time before I successfully proved this theorem. Growing up in the sixties and seventies, one did not commonly go on “dates” with girls. Mind you, there was lots of stuff going on,

just not during formal dates, and therefore not at the movies. Finally when I was about 20 years old, I got up the courage to ask a girl out for a movie date. This was to be our first date together. We went to The Godfather which had been around for awhile at that point. The crowd was sparse. We sat down near the back of the theatre and thus began that nervous period of negotiation when the parameters of first-date touching began. Do we share the armrest? Do we hold hands? Where do I put my arm? These are very important questions on the mind of all young men as they are sitting next to cute, blonde, 19 year old girls at the movies. I need not fear as I was evidently dating a pro, who without further ado, took charge. Within minutes of the lights going down, as I was beginning to sweat over what to do next, she took my right arm, picked it up, and smoothly encircled her lithe shoulders, continuing to hold my right hand lest I withdraw it from this now very cozy position. My arm lay in this position as the Corleones killed each other and created major mayhem on the silver screen in front of me. I was, of course, oblivious to it all as I had my arm around a warm, breathing female of the species, by invitation, no less. You may recall, this is a long movie. I didn’t notice.
