Advocating for Dentistry In mid-September, 22 Seattle-King County Dental Society members attended the Washington State Dental Association’s House of Delegates as your representatives. This governing body sets the WSDA policies for the upcoming year and elects the WSDA officers. We also approve the budget—and it is important to share with you that neither SKCDS nor the WSDA will have a membership dues increase. (The ADA will set its dues at its November House.)

I want to return to the new WSDA lobbyists that I mentioned above. I had a chance to talk with them several times during the House, and I was impressed with the speed at which they grasped the legislative issues that are important to us. They are very excited about Seattle-King’s new initiative---GLAD or Grassroots Legislative Advocacy for Dentistry. All of us know that our interactions with legislators need to be more than one day down in Olympia. While Dental Action Day is important, we must step up our game to combat the well-funded and well-organized forces trying to pass mid-level provider and dental service organization legislation.

SKCDS wants to do something about that. I invite you to join us for a free, grassroots training that we will be holding on Thursday, November 19th at 6:30 pm at our offices. We have invited our new lobbyists to talk about the upcoming session. More importantly, we have invited Dr. Michelle Caldier, former SKCDS member and current Washington State Representative, to come talk with us about how to most effectively connect with your representatives. Finally, we have asked Dr. Cynthia Pauley, one of our most effective dental advocates, to present on how to start your efforts to reach out to legislators. We’re providing dinner and promise the program will go about 2 hours. Our goal is to make it easy to advocate for our profession. If you want to protect our great profession, please join us for this meeting. I am sure you will be inspired by how easy it is to make a difference.

By the time you are reading this, Election Day will have just passed. That is when our real work must begin if we are going to protect our profession in the Legislature. Organized dentistry will be there advocating for you. The more voices we have, the easier it is for our message to be heard.

Please join me in congratulating two new SKCDS members who joined the WSDA Board of Directors: Drs. Randy Ogata and Amy Winston. They join fellow SKCDS members Drs. Chris Delecki, Gary Heyamoto, Cindy Pauley and Jim Reid. We also owe a round of thanks to Dr. Greg Ogata who finished his term as WSDA president and our best wishes to incoming president, Dr. Bryan Edgar. Our SKCDS membership is well represented in the WSDA leadership.

The House also approved the legislative agenda for 2016. We had an opportunity to hear from our two new lobbyists—Mr. Trent House and Mr. Brad Tower (more on them later)—as well as an attorney we’ve retained to help us ensure that dental practices are owned and run by dentists. We also looked at ways to increase access to dental care through our residency programs, streamlining the membership approval process and how to involve new leaders. Finally, the House is instituting several governance ideas like non-profit training, anti-nepotism policy and an executive director compensation committee that will make the WSDA more transparent to members and the best run non-profit out there. All in all, it was an effective House of Delegates; and, its efforts will make organized dentistry stronger.

Our additional diagnostics offer objective assessment of upper respiratory airway providing your patients a better opportunity for managing sleep apnea & snoring

Finding the right associate or practice to purchase is one of, if not the most, challenging parts of dentistry. The WSDA and SKCDS are stepping in to make that process a little easier. In February and March of 2016, we will be offering two Job Fairs. One will focus on matching young dentists with prospective employers and one will focus on matching practice sellers with prospective buyers. Each event will take place on a Saturday morning at the WSDA offices in Seattle.

Our plan is that participants looking for an associate will be placed in an office. Prospective employees will sign up with the senior dentists they wish to meet. They will have about 15 minutes to meet, talk and share their qualifications.

Every 15 minutes the candidates will rotate. This system gives the prospective employer the chance to meet with many candidates in about 2 hours. Candidates provide a resume’, which the senior dentist can use to follow up as they wish. The WSDA offered a similar event in 2014 and it was very successful. Members from all over the State participated to meet and interview. We anticipate a similar response in 2016 so make your reservations early. Spaces for participants are limited and this is a members-only event.

We have created several life-saving programs including free dental screenings for kidney dialysis patients awaiting transplants, a free complex tooth extraction clinic and numerous activities aimed at treating low income children.

Our Dental Foundation has awarded over $1.2M in grants with a goal of eliminating dental pain and infection in King County. Our member dentists are small business owners who are actively involved in their communities.

SO, the next time you are out and about and get asked about what organized dentistry is and/or what it does, feel free to use any one of these.

Try them out. Make them your own. We want to make sure we talk about the Dental Society and your Foundation in a consistent way to these critical audiences.

Here is how it works…

Your prospective patient goes to the “Find a Dentist” button on our website. They can search by name, address, zip code, location and/or specific area of dentistry.

The American Dental Association database is where this information is stored. Your ADA number identifies you in this database. Because you are a member of the ADA, WSDA and SKCDS, you can be easy to find by prospective new patients. All three organizations have the same feature on their respective websites.

If organized dentistry has learned one thing this past year, the forces opposing dentistry are both well-funded and well-organized. If we are going to protect our profession, we, as a group, must up our game in the legislative arena.

There are three ways you can help (and we hope you will consider all of them): 1. Mark your Calendar and plan to attend the WSDA’s Dental Action Day in Olympia. This one day ‘blitzkrieg’ of legislative advocacy is scheduled for Friday, January 29, 2016. Come join your fellow dentists and the entire student body of the University of Washington’s School of Dentistry in meeting with legislators. The day will begin with a legislative briefing over breakfast. You will then be paired with dentists experienced in talking with your district’s legislator, and the entire group will have an opportunity to address legislative issues important to dentistry. This free event runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but you only need to stay through your appointments. Keep an eye out for when registration opens through the WSDA’s Source, and Stand UP and be Counted!

2. We are very excited about Seattle-King County Dental Society’s new initiative---GLAD or Grassroots Legislative Advocacy for Dentistry. All of us know that our interactions with legislators need to be more than one day down in Olympia. While Dental Action Day is important, we must step up our game to combat the well-funded and well-organized forces trying to pass mid-level provider and dental service organization legislation. SKCDS wants to do something about that. We invite you to join us for a free, grassroots training that we will be holding on Thursday, November 19th at 6:30 pm at our offices. We have invited our new lobbyists and the WSDA to talk about the upcoming session. More importantly, we have invited Dr. Michelle Caldier, former SKCDS member and current Washington State Representative, to come talk with us about how to most effectively connect with your representatives. Finally, we have asked Dr. Cynthia Pauley, one of our most effective dental advocates, to present on how to start your efforts to reach out to legislators. We’re providing dinner and promise the program will go about 2 hours. Won’t you join us?

3. If you can’t make either of these two events, please consider supporting pro-dentistry legislators financially. You can do that several different ways. You can contribute to the WSDA’s DentPAC which gives contributions to politicians across the belief spectrum—so long as they are helpful and/or sympathetic to the causes that are important to dentistry. Another way to contribute is to make individual financial contributions to the candidates that you support OR to attend (and donate) at one of the many political fundraisers that our members run. If you need any suggestions about how to go about supporting candidates and politicians financially, we would be happy to connect you with the right folks at the WSDA to make that happen.

Following leveling and aligning, a full thickness flap was reflected and alveolar corticotomies were performed along the buccal surfaces of the maxilla, spanning from molar to molar (Figs 4). The alveolus was grafted with re-hydrated sterile particulate freeze-dried human bone allograft and the flaps were repositioned and sutured to place. Healing was uneventful.

The patient was seen every two weeks in order to assess the treatment progress and to make any necessary orthodontic changes. Large tooth movements occurred efficiently within the weeks following the surgery.

The final finishing and detailing stages of the patient’s treatment were completed within the same time frame as with any orthodontic case.

Results: Tooth movement goals as outlined in the original treatment plan were achieved (Fig. 5).

Total treatment was completed less than one year. The success seen in this case, however, is not from the speed of orthodontics, but from the dramatic range of tooth movements achieved without adverse sequelae to the teeth and periodontium. In this patient, only maxillary buccal bone grafting was utilized, minimizing the surgical intervention. Many patients are now

A Community of Compassion Seattle/King County Clinic 2015 We are so grateful to all of the SKCDS members who participated in the 2015 Key Arena Clinic the weekend of October 22-25. We had over 150 members participating, along with dental students from UW SOD, dental assistants and hygienists. Many members brought their staff to participate as well. We even had spouses and family members volunteering in support roles! Some patients travelled for hours to attend the Clinic.

Most waited throughout the night to secure a space to see healthcare practitioners. being treated with a combination of both hard and soft tissue grafting materials - thus changing the tissue thickness, correcting recession defects and further preventing future recession. All teeth, occlusal and soft tissue changes, remained stable at the patient’s one-year retention visit.

Golf

By Al Munk DDS Golf is that girlfriend that cheats on you repeatedly, yet you continue to let her back in your life. You love her, but sometimes you hate her and can’t stand being in her presence. She betrays you in so many ways, you can’t count them all. A week or a month later, you limp back to her, hoping that this time, unlike a hundred times before, she will be nice to you. Dream on.

I started playing golf when I was about 12 years old. My father was a real gamer and he was always up for a new activity, especially something involving hitting a ball. He played a lot of baseball and football growing up, and this was a new challenge, one that he could partake with me, his son. We went out to the local muni, a flat cow pasture that was more like a shooting range. Golf balls flying in all directions at once. It is a wonder I survived to tell this tale these years later. We, of course, did not know any better, and thought that this was Pebble Beach. We rented some clubs that looked like they had been through the War and went out there and started hacking at it. Though my course is much neater today, and my clubs are shinier, this basically describes my present relationship with the game.

Golf is thought of as an egalitarian game, for the elite, upper class. That was far from the truth in Southwest Washington in the 60’s. It cost $1 to play golf for kids at my local 9 hole course. We had to be off the course by noon so we learned to play real fast. We hunted our balls in the woods surrounding the course and always had a bag of spares. We didn’t wear golf shoes and there was no dress code of any kind. Kids never got sore backs or sore feet like the geezers I play with today. My regular foursome I play with should have a mobile medical vehicle to accompany us to take care of all the orthopedic and urinary crises that occur during the normal course of play. I am the youngest player in my group, at 65, nearly 20 years junior to our oldest. A pathetic bunch of jalopies.

We always play for money. Golf money is a little different than regular money. You would not have a second thought about spending $5 or $10 at the coffee stand. But winning or losing $5 or $10 at golf takes on a whole new level of importance. When you win a few bucks playing golf, you walk to your car with a lightness to your step, head held high, and a smile on your face. Lose a few bucks, on the other hand, is a little like a death in the family. You limp to your car, wondering if you ever want to play golf again. Then, a few hours or days later, like the treacherous girl mentioned earlier, you begin to think that maybe you could do better next time. This is preposterous of course, because

it is one of the laws of the universe that you never get better at golf. There are people who are good at this game. There is no reason they are good. It just happens. But there is a whole industry of deception at play that deludes the average schmuck into thinking he can get better, if he just spends a gazillion dollars on equipment and lessons.

Of course I have bought into this mass delusion, and of course, I play no better than when I was 12 years old.

There are a few good points about this game.

It gets you out of your house for a few hours, out in the fresh air. It is good exercise if you walk around the course with your clubs on your back like I do.

You make friends on the golf course which is always a good thing for men, who unlike their female counterparts, are less adept at social interaction in general. It gives you something to do on Saturday or Sunday mornings, which otherwise might be better spent in bed. And every once in awhile, you hit a shot that is as good as Tiger Woods ever hit. This is, of course, a random event that would also occasionally happen even if an orangutan was swinging the club. Regardless, it happens, and gives you something to think about until the next time.
