A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN… You may have heard by now that this year will be my last serving as rabbi of Bnai Abraham Synagogue. Although Dena and I believe that this is the right decision for our family, it is one that has been bitter sweet for us. We are so grateful for the warm community we’ve found in Easton, and for the deep and meaningful friendships which have nurtured us over the past five years. I’m especially grateful for the opportunities to learn and grow that Bnai Abraham has provided me. I began my tenure here having never served another pulpit; this community helped me to forge my identity as rabbi. It allowed me the opportunity to learn from my failures, and to become a more confident and resilient spiritual leader. It has been my honor to be invited into the most meaningful moments of your life. You have trusted me to be a presence at moments of profound joy and deep sadness; I hope that I have been able to make meaningful contributions to those moments. I know that there have been times when I have faltered; I am equally grateful for the gift of your patience. My tenure at Bnai Abraham is scheduled to conclude at the end of July. Until that time, I hope to continue to contribute to the growth and sustainability of this community to the best of my abilities. I look forward to continuing in my roles as teacher, preacher, and pastoral presence during this time. Please know that vibrant Jewish life in Easton remains my top priority, and if there are ways in which you believe I may perform better in this task, please let me know. I’m quite sure that Easton will remain a place of great significance for Dena, Miri, and me. It is the community that welcomed us from New York, and where our daughter was born and was welcomed into the covenant of the Jewish people. In a short time, we look forward to celebrating our son’s bris in our sanctuary. We’ve shared so many special moments with this community; I am confident that the bonds of friendship we’ve formed here will long endure. Thank you so much for all that you have given us. Sincerely, Rabbi Stein

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE ‌

On behalf of the board of directors and the congregation of Bnai Abraham Synagogue, it is my unhappy duty to accept the resignation of Rabbi Daniel Stein. It has been a pleasure working with the Rabbi over the past 5 years. He has been active and engaged in all areas of synagogue life. His modern creative ideas have been enjoyed by members of the congregation, and he and his beautiful family will be missed when they leave in July 2016.

IMPORTANT CONGREGATIONAL MEETING ON NOVEMBER 9th On November 9th we will meet at 7:00 p.m. as a congregation to discuss our options and our future. This meeting is extremely important as it will decide our course of action for the next year. Please make every attempt to attend. The term every vote counts is particularly true in this instance. Refreshments will be served. Please respond to the office and let us know if you are planning on attending. In the meantime for the rest of this year we will have a full calendar with many exciting and new programs. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting and I am always available to respond to your questions at any time. Thank you. Gerald Weisberger, President Bnai Abraham Synagogue

UPCOMING EVENTS BNAI ABRAHAM FILM/DINNER SERIES SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29th AT 4:00 P.M. Join us at Bnai Abraham on Sunday, November 29th at 4:00 pm when will be showing the film “The Deli Man”. This documentary focuses on Ziggy Gruber, who co-owns a large deli in Houston and is also the grandson of the original owner of the Rialto Deli, the first Kosher deli to open on Broadway in New York City in the 1920s. The deli is the main love in this man's life. While the film also covers other famous Jewish delis in Manhattan, Queens, Los Angeles and San Francisco and their histories, the emphasis is on the cultural aspects of the food and how the culture and the desire for this food are disappearing. There were once thousands of these delis and now there's fewer than 150 left in the entire U.S. Such luminaries as Larry King, Jerry Stiller, Fyvush Finkel, Freddie Roman and Alan Dershowitz, as well as various deli owners, express their love for the culture and the food. Dinner will be deli style food at Bnai Abraham – Cost is $10 per person. The film is free. Come to one or come to both! We look forward to seeing you there!

UPCOMING EVENTS BAT MITZVAH ALITZA LILA HOCHHAUSER DECEMBER 12, 2015 Alitza, affectionately called Allee by those who know her, is a 7th grade student at the Jewish Day School of the Lehigh Valley. Now in her 8th year at JDS, Alitza is excelling in her studies that include secular classes, alongside a rigorous grounding in Judaics, Hebrew, and Spanish. Outside of JDS, Allee enjoys swimming on the JCC Lightnings swim team as well as playing basketball and softball for PYC. In addition, Alitza is currently participating in Kadima and taking piano lessons, filling her home with music nearly every day. In her spare time, Alitza enjoys hanging out with her brothers and going on mini family adventures, socializing with her friends, and is nearly always found devouring a good book. Her summers and vacation breaks include time in the Poconos at Camp Ramah, classes at The Baum School of Art, the occasional trip to visit her grandparents and family in Texas, in town or on the farm, as well as the special day trips to NYC with her grandparents here in the Lehigh Valley. Alitza’s Bat Mitzvah Project, “The Fantastic Fast”, is named and based on the words of Isaiah 58, read on Yom Kippur. This past Rosh Hashanah, Allee asked the congregation to join in her efforts to “change lives in the community, and to motivate others into participating in giving back to the community.” She is collecting donated clothing, food and toiletries from bins placed in Bnai Abraham’s lobby and delivering the appropriate items to Safe Harbor of Easton, Jewish Family Services of the Lehigh Valley, The Beall and Linny Fowler Hospitality House for Women and Children, and the Salvation Army. Our community is answering the call, allowing Allee to make multiple deliveries and participate in gemilut chasadim on behalf of the entire Bnai Abraham family. Alitza, along with her brothers, Avi and Asa, and her parents Julie and Aron, invite you to share in the joyous milestone of Allee’s Bat Mitzvah as she is called to the Torah on December 12, 2015. Kiddush and a luncheon will follow services in the Weitzman Auditorium.

The Ritual Corner for November Submitted by Irwin Lewis

Laws Concerning Festivals Any work which is forbidden on the Sabbath is also forbidden on a festival. And just as on the Sabbath it is forbidden to have certain work done by a non-Jew, even so it is on a festival. One's cattle must be allowed to rest. The festival does differ from the Sabbath with regard to the preparation of food. {Exodus 12:16}: “Only that which is eaten by any soul, this alone may be prepared by you. Thus kneading, baking, slaughtering and cooking are permitted on a festival. Carrying objects from one place to another and kindling a fire are also permitted on a festival, even when not needed for cooking, but for some other purpose. Such spices as would lose their flavor if they were crushed before the festival may be crushed on a festival, if done in an unaccustomed manner, for instance, by inclining the mortar on its side or by pounding them on the table.
