A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN… One of the more interesting prohibitions on Passover is the restriction on eating kitniyot--often translated as legumes. While both Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews accept the Torah’s prohibition against eating leavened products from the so-called five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, oats, and rye) only Ashkenazim take on the additional stricture of avoiding kitniyot--a wide range of food including items as diverse as chickpeas, rice, corn, and peanuts. Why did Ashkenazim adopt such a practice? David Golinkin, the President of the Schechter Institute in Israel, notes that the ban on kitniyot is not mentioned in the earliest rabbinic sources; it is not to be found in Torah, the Mishnah, or the Talmud. It is not until the Thirteenth Century that we find it, in a text from Provence. While no explanation for the prohibition is found in that text, it the custom spread across the Ashkenazi community, and, over time, nearly a dozen explanations were used to justify the custom: perhaps these items were mixed with grain, or could rise like grain, or their storage containers at one time housed grain. Eventually, the stricture became ingrained (pun intended) in the Jewish psyche, and for Jews of Central- and Eastern-European descent, the ban became an integral part of the holiday. There were, however, always controversies: take, for instance, the humble peanut. Was it to be considered kitniyot? Certainly, it is a legume, but could a rabbi in Provence have imagined the New World food? While some forbid it, Rav Moshe Feinstein, an influential Lower East Side rabbi argued to allow it: if it was not part of the original ban, it certainly was permissible. Today, a similar argument rages about quinoa: is it a bean? A seed? A grain? Again, while many allow it, there are those who would not. The Conservative movement, predictably, has taken a more liberal path. Years ago, it permit Ashkenazim to eat kitniyot in Israel, where a Sephardic majority makes it difficult to find Passover items without them. This past year, the Rabbinical Assembly issued white papers allowing all Jews to eat kitniyot on Passover. This was their rationale: “In order to bring down the cost of making Pesah and support the healthier diet that is now becoming more common, and given the inapplicability today of the primary concerns that seem to have led to the custom of prohibiting kitniyot, and further, given our inclination in our day to present an accessible Judaism unencumbered by unneeded prohibitions, more easily able to participate in the culture that surrounds us, we are prepared to rely on the fundamental observance recorded in the Talmud and codes and permit the eating of kitniyot on Pesah.” Ultimately, Jews will make their own choices--but it is heartening to know that Jewish leaders remain concerned about making our tradition more open and accessible. I wish you all the best for a sweet and kosher Passover. Please be in touch with any questions you may have! Rabbi Stein

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE ‌ Shalom, We are currently directing our energy toward the Rabbinical search and the presentation of the Divas on the Bima program which will be held on June 6th at BAS. We encourage you all to lend your support, since the 180 Club will not be held this year, this is our major fundraiser for 2016. Please purchase your tickets and ads as early as possible, and encourage your friends and acquaintances to attend. Feel free to contact the office for information on how you can help with making this program a huge success. This year we really require the support of the entire congregation. If you want BAS to continue, please demonstrate it by your physical participation, not just your verbal participation. The Board and the Diva committee needs your help. BAS needs your support. Sincerely, Jerry Weisberger President

The Ritual Corner for April Submitted by Irwin Lewis

The Pidyon Ha-be Ceremony Pidyon-Ha-ben means “Redemption of the Firstborn Son”. Exodus 13|1-3 ordains that “the first issue of every womb” (meaning firstborn of a mother) belongs to God. To free the child from the obligation of dedicating his life totally to the service of God, the firstborn is redeemed by having the father pay a Priest (Kohen), God's representative, five shekalim, which is traditionally considered to be roughly the equivalent of five silver dollars. Since Priests and Levites were obligated to serve in the Temple and could not be exempted from service, the Pidyon Ha-ben does not apply to them. Also, the Pidyon Ha-ben is not required for children delivered by Caesarean section. It only applies to children who have exited the womb naturally.
