A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN… With Purim approaching at the end of the month, I thought it might be interesting to reflect on one of the holiday’s ubiquitous symbols: the hamantash. This triangular pastry has both a unique history and the distinction of continued reinvention. Before delving into its meaning, it is worth reflecting on the pastry itself. While today, a wide variety of fillings are often employed, most traditional filling of hamantashen is poppyseed--I point a begrudgingly cede, despite my fond memories of my bubbie’s prune pastries. This is important because of the particular symbolism of the poppyseed. Jews frequently eat symbolic foods--apples and honey for a sweet new year; saltwater to remember the tears of slavery; latkes to remember the miracle of the oil. On Purim, a custom developed to eat seeds and nuts to remember the vegetarianism of the Biblical Daniel. Like Esther, the Book of Daniel is set in the Babylonian exile; Daniel serves in a foreign court, and abstains from meat to protect his observance of kashrut. Some people suggest that Esther adopted the same practice when she served in the royal court. To honor their piety, it became customary to eat seeds on Purim. By the Middle Ages, it became popular to eat Purim kreplach. While we think of kreplach as being meat filled--almost a Jewish won-ton, the etymology actually is from the French ‘crepe.’ In fact, in German, such pastries are called krepchen. At Purim time, Jews would fill a spiced, goose-fat enriched dough with dried fruit to give as gifts to friends. Apparently, these pastries were a Jewish version of popular Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) pastries enjoyed in broaders society. In Judaism, these pastries took on a variety of names. In Yiddish, they became known as hamantashen--likely play on the words mohn (poppy seed), tash (pocket), and the name of the villainous Haman in the book of Esther. In Italian, these pastries were called orrechie di Aman--Haman’s ears. This tradition migrated into Hebrew, where the pastry is called ozeni haman. By the 19th Century, their triangular shape called to mind the tricorne hats worn by imperial leaders; Jews imagined that Hamman must have adopted a similar model of dress, and a further association was made. Whatever you call them, I hope you enjoy your fill over the holiday. I wish you a joyful and happy purim! Rabbi Stein Much of the material in this months column comes from David Golinkin's in-depth history of the Hamentash, available here: http://www.schechter.edu/responsa.aspx? ID=83

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE ‌ Shalom March is here, and we find ourselves deep in a Rabbinical search. We are hard at work reviewing candidates and hope to be able to present one or more of them to the congregation in the near future. We are also preparing for a performance by the Divas on the Bima, 4 Cantors including Easton’s own, Jen Cohen. As many of you know, Jen holds the position of Cantor at a large Conservative Synagogue in Cherry Hill, NJ. We are fortunate that the Divas have agreed to perform at BAS, but that will require some help from the congregation. We need volunteers for advertising, sponsorship program, ticket sales, marketing setup, refreshments, etc. This performance can help put Easton and BAS on the map and show that the eastern end of the Lehigh Valley is flourishing. Please call Irene at the office to offer your support for this exciting program. Your help and participation are greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you, Jerry Weisberger President

RABBI SHARGER’S MOTHER TURNS 100 HONORING MRS. ELSIE SHRAGER ON THE OCCASION OF HER 100th BIRTHDAY: BY NATHAN WEISSLER My name is Nathan Weissler and I am a college student in the Washington, DC area. I live in Chevy Chase, Maryland. At Bnai Abraham Synagogue, Rabbi Mark Shrager z"l was the rabbi, and he was also a very close friend of my grandfather, Leonard Miaskoff z"l who was a congregant from the 1960s to the 1990s. On March 22, 2016, Mrs. Elsie Shrager, the mother of Rabbi Mark Shrager, will celebrate her 100th birthday. After Rabbi Shrager's death, I reached out to Mrs. Shrager's daughter, Sara Beth Shrager, to express my condolences and to let her know about the important, meaningful and positive impact that Rabbi Shrager had for my grandfather and for my family. In the context of reaching out to Sara Beth Shrager, I had the very meaningful opportunity to get to know Mrs. Shrager from whom I have learned a lot and continue to learn a lot. For example, I learned from her that, especially, when one does one's best work, in daily life, one has a lot to be proud of. I am writing this article to honor her on the occasion of her 100th birthday. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 22, 1916. Her parents were David William Aezen and Yetta Fink Aezen. She was raised in Philadelphia and attended the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. She married Harry Elliot Shrager on July 3, 1938 and they had two children, Rabbi Mark Shrager and Sara Beth Shrager. Like their mother, Rabbi Shrager and Sara Beth Shrager spent their childhoods in Philadelphia. Sara Beth Shrager told me that the values their mother taught Rabbi Shrager were important in inspiring him to become a rabbi. Sara Beth recalled, "She [her mother] taught him [Rabbi Shrager] his moral compass which in some ways led to the rabbinate." Indeed, as I know from the special impact that Rabbi Shrager had for my family and, especially, for my grandfather, Rabbi Shrager was a fantastic rabbi! Additionally, Sara Beth described how her mother had a meaningful and special impact in the field of education. Mrs. Shrager was a reading specialist and received federal grants to teach reading. She worked in education until the age of 75 and was well known for being very dedicated to her students. Sara Beth remembered, "The children really liked her [Mrs. Shrager] and they sensed what a good person she was and that she cared about them." As I will explain, Mrs. Shrager's kindness and care for others has positively impacted my life. One of the most special ways in which she has impacted my life is in the context of a very meaningful conversation that I had with her in which I expressed my appreciation for the friendship that her son and my grandfather had. I will describe that conversation in the following paragraph. Spending time with her will always be a very special memory for me. The first time that I met her was in August 2014, when I visited Mrs. Shrager in Philadelphia to express my deep gratitude for her son's extraordinary kindness to my grandfather. One of my most vivid memories from that visit is that she gave me a very warm smile and thanked me very much for my words about her son. Indeed, I very clearly recall thinking that she is one of the most thoughtful and optimistic people I have met and I feel that way to this day. She was very kind to me and her kindness touched my soul! I have learned a lot from her about how to be kind to others and about how to help others to feel happy and appreciated. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the positive and special impact that she has had, and continues to have, for me. Furthermore, I am seriously considering working in education and learning about her helped to inspire my thoughts about my dreams for the future. She helped to inspire me to build the soul that I have today. Thank you so much, Mrs. Shrager, for changing my life in a very positive, meaningful and important way! I have learned a lot from you. Happy birthday Mrs. Shrager!

The Ritual Corner for March Submitted by Irwin Lewis

Purim takes its name (PUR lots) because Haman cast lots to decide on the day that the Jews would be annihilated i.e. in ancient Shushan. There is another holiday in which lots figure and that is Yom Kippur. In the time of the Temple the Kohanic Gadol or High Priest would cast lots to select one goat to be a sacrifice and a goat to run free. Also the men at sea in the Jonah story cast lots to determine who is responsible for the angry seas - a short story for Yom Kippur afternoon. Sometimes Yom Kippur can mean Yom K 'PUR. A Day like Purim
