Welcome to this magazine/ pamphlet/magphlet/pamphazine which introduces the wonderful cultural offerings at Birmingham’s Symphony and Town Halls over the festive period.
If you’re not familiar with me, I am a local chap who grew up on the rough streets of Hall Green. When not threatening pensioners outside the Waitrose (RIP, it’s now a B&M Bargains) I would long to be culturally stimulated and found solace in the impressive performances available at the various venues throughout the city, including the great Symphony and Town Halls. My experiences in these venues, seeing comedy, music, theatre and more, have undeniably helped me become the man I am today (a kind of modern, more affordable Dale Winton).
These venues are jewels in the Brummie Cultural Crown ™ (this is not officially trademarked but if I see anyone else use it, I will sue) but they’re increasingly expensive to run. Successive governments have seen culture as a sort of extravagance, rather than a vital part of the wellbeing of society. This has forced our institutions to constantly have to justify their own existence. Yet without them, our city loses its identity.
Recently B:Music launched Amplify Town Hall, an ambitious and exciting project which will refurbish this beautiful venue and help share its amazing history - it’s seen David Bowie, Black Sabbath and The Beatles. Jimmy Carr has also performed here, but we’ve all made mistakes. It’s been a cultural pillar for nearly 200 years and is vital to the new generation of creatives and performers.
I’m proud to be an ambassador for B:Music and urge you to support them, if you can, by donating, sponsoring a seat, or simply buying a ticket and having a great night out.
Many thanks, kind regards, best wishes, Merry Christmas, and my sincerest condolences, Joe Lycett

NEWS
OZZY MEMORIES
AMPLIFIED
The B:Music search to unearth memories and memorabilia via the Amplify Town Hall project led to a timely story from John Slatford. John recounted how he had been invited to an early Black Sabbath gig at Town Hall by John ‘Ozzy’ Osbourne. Friends and family had the Dress Circle to themselves, and as befitted such a special occasion as seeing your mate play at Town Hall, all the men wore suits and ties. John sent us his story with a photo signed on the night, in the same week that thousands gathered to say goodbye to The Prince of Darkness as his cortege passed by Town Hall & Symphony Hall along Broad Street.
Read more on our instagram (@ bmusic_ltd) and see bmusic.co.uk/ amplify-town-hall to find out how you can help us preserve the memory of important cultural moments for future generations of Brummies to enjoy.

AMPLIFY TOWN HALL
Thank you to everyone who has already supported our campaign to raise £200k to celebrate and preserve Town Hall, one of Birmingham’s most historical landmarks and iconic music venues.
Support has come from voices across the industry...
“Birmingham has always been at the heart of Duran Duran – it’s where it all began for us. The music scene here was so incredibly influential, and I have such vivid memories of seeing gigs at Birmingham Town Hall that really shaped my love of live music.
My most memorable shows at the Town Hall in the late ’70s include Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, AC/DC, Judas Priest, and Ultravox. It’s a place full of history and energy, and I’m proud to lend my support to the Amplify Town Hall
“Local music venues like Town Hall are the lifeblood of our music culture. They’re where artists find their voice, where communities gather, and where unforgettable memories are made. These spaces are more than just stages: they’re incubators of creativity, places where new talent is nurtured and where music lovers can experience something real, raw, and intimate.
And they’re vital for supporting the next generation of musicians, providing a gateway from pubs and clubs to bigger stages.
Music needs fresh voices, and those voices need places to be heard.”
Joan Armatrading Singer-Songwriter
“Birmingham Town Hall is more than a building — it has been the stage for voices that have changed history. It has for example, been at the heart of the struggle for women’s right to vote, witnessing Millicent Fawcett’s speech on franchise in 1872, the mass suffrage meetings led by Lady Frances Balfour and of course my great-grandmother Emmeline Pankhurst speaking there, including in 1907 and 1916. It also hosted events organised by local leaders like Catherine Osler and Ellen Pinsent.
“I have so many fond memories of performing at Town Hall. Its incredible acoustics, stunning architecture, and amazing audiences all make it truly special. It’s a place where music lives and breathes, and it makes me proud to be from Birmingham that the Town Hall is still a phenomenal live event venue. Birmingham is incredible, its venues are incredible, and its history is well worth keeping alive!”
Toyah Willcox Singer, Actress & Author
See more words of support from Joe Lycett & Jasper Carrott on B:Music socials!
The building is part of the legacy that helped secure the freedoms women enjoy today and continues to inspire new generations to push for equality. Amplify Town Hall honours this heritage, ensuring that future generations can connect with the stories that unfolded within its walls. I am proud to support Amplify Town Hall and urge everyone who values heritage, music, and social change to donate to the preservation of the building, reminding us of its past and amplifying its future.”

Sir Simon Rattle & the Bavarian
Radio Symphony Orchestra 11 Nov | SH
Without doubt one of the most anticipated concerts of recent years, Sir Simon Rattle makes a homecoming appearance at Symphony Hall with his new orchestra. It’s twenty years since the world-leading Bavarian Radio Symphony
Orchestra last came to Birmingham and, since Rattle took the reins in 2023, they say he’s “blown fresh air under the wings of all of us”. They open with the symphony Schumann wrote after completing his piano concerto. During the year it took to finish, his mental health was at times fragile, yet this is an optimistic and exciting work, with a fastpaced scherzo and heartfelt slow movement. Stravinsky’s spellbinding music to the extravagant ballet The Firebird was his first commission from impresario Serge Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes and it sealed the young composer’s reputation. It was also the work Rattle chose for the first concert in Symphony Hall in 1991. We’ll hear every magical note of the complete ballet score as the tale of a prince, evil ogre, enchanted princesses and magical phoenix unfolds in vivid orchestral technicolour.

MEET THE TEAM: TICKETING
From First Conversation to Final Encore: The Story Behind the Stage at B:Music
At B:Music, every unforgettable night at Town Hall and Symphony Hall begins long before the lights go down and the first note is played. Behind the scenes, our Events and Ticketing Officers are quietly shaping the audience experience, turning an idea into reality and ensuring every detail is in place. From building seating plans to agreeing ticket prices with promoters and managing access, their work is the bridge between an artist taking the stage and an audience taking their seats.
One of the joys of the role is its sheer variety. Between them, the team has worked in everything from grass roots venues to major ticketing companies, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge that ensures every show runs smoothly. Jon, who began his career at Wolves Civic at the age of 16 and later spent nine years at The Ticket Factory, says it is this blend of experiences that helps him guide audiences from ticket purchase to performance without a hitch. Emily, who joined B:Music in 2021, encourages newcomers to get involved in as many areas as possible, from the front of house to the back office, to understand how all the moving parts of a venue come together.
“Say yes to as many opportunities as you can and build connections, because every experience and relationship matters.” – Jon The team’s work is perhaps most
visible in the intricate seating manifests they create. Every event at Town Hall and Symphony Hall has its own unique plan, with each seat carefully assigned a price, noting restricted views and access requirements. Kieran describes the process as painstaking but essential, since it is what ensures audiences can make informed choices when booking. For Jonny, the challenge is balanced by the reward of seeing how it all translates into a packed auditorium, buzzing with excitement before the curtain rises.
Of course, the role comes with unforgettable perks. Kieran still remembers the joy of seeing Joan Rivers on her final tour at Symphony Hall, calling it “the most hilarious couple of hours I’ve ever had in my life.” Jon treasures the memory of Nick Cave’s spine-tingling piano concert in 2019, while Jonny remembers the thrill of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with live orchestra. Emily, who is also an active amateur dramatics performer herself, loves discovering new artists and adding to her ever-growing list of shows to see.
Whether they are refining a seating plan, advising on ticketing, or simply soaking up the atmosphere from the back of the hall, the Events and Ticketing Officers are at the heart of B:Music. Their dedication ensures that when the house lights dim and the first note is struck, audiences can focus on what really matters: the magic of live performance.
THANK YOU
