A celebration of their new album: Good Luck Shoes
Tue 25 Feb | Jennifer Blackwell Performance Space | 7:30PM
The Lost Notes are a Moseley-based 5-piece Americana band renowned for their energetic and joyous live shows. They recently released their third album ‘Good Luck Shoes’.
From Ben’s love of funk, Americana/soul and gospel, Oli’s folk and acoustic mix, Max Tomlinson’s jazz conservatoire pedigree, Steve Vantsis’ prog-rock, to Lucy’s love of sultry jazz and musical theatre, each new song arrangement is infused with their eclectic musical personalities.
This love of music started early.
“My parents loved music and singing as a family was always a big part of my life,” says Ben. “My dad was a Baroque recorder player. I remember hearing him practicing downstairs and being captivated by the haunting melodies.
From then on, I’ve been drawn to music, songwriting, connecting with people through performance and sharing the joy of singing together.”
“My house was full of music,” Oli adds.
“I’d suddenly hear Chopin being played on the piano by my dad, or Scott Joplin, both of whom I still love to this day. My mum was the guitarist and singer in the house, and singing round campfires was a very regular occurrence.”
For Lucy, her earliest memory was her dad singing ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’
by Brotherhood of Man. “In my teens I mainly wanted to be in musical theatre,” says Lucy. “But The Lost Notes will do!”
The Lost Notes have performed on the B:Music stages both within the halls and beyond. “It’s hard to express quite what it means when representatives of somewhere like B:Music come up after a gig and say, “we love what you’re doing and we’d like to support you.” It makes all the effort you put into trying to make your music a success worth it. It’s genuinely a ‘pinch yourself’ moment.”
“The new album is probably best described as 10 tales exploring the plight of the wary, the hopeful, the loved and the loveable; the wild and the lost, the unhinged and the crossed. The fixed up, the torn down, the hoe-downs and throw downs – topped by the musings of a deliriously optimistic psychopath with a death wish. Standard Lost Notes fare!” They’ll be returning to the Jennifer Blackwell Performance Stage in February.

If you’re into Download and Bloodstock you’ll know Fury, if not, they’re probably the best metal band you’ve never heard of. On touring with Phil Campbell
JJ: You have to take the opportunities when they come because if you turn that down you don’t know when the next one’s gonna come along.
Nyah: I said ‘dash the job just dash it just if I quit, I quit. Let’s go’.
On Music Videos
Tom: We grew up watching music videos on things like MTV, those channels don’t exist in the same way anymore.
Becky: We started to take ourselves more seriously. Here’s the album, an extensive tour, professional music videos. We didn’t know how hard this was for a small band, so we just did it. It feels like we’re kind of in our stride.
Nyah: We went to release the album, that was when the first lockdown happened. Tour cancelled. Everything cancelled. Everyone shut inside.
JJ: It was very disheartening because we’d done all this work. But we decided to go forward with the album release anyway. In a strange way it kind of worked for us. We were able to get online and live stream. It wasn’t a good thing. And then it was everything.
Becky: It’s the fan response. The tours keep getting better. Just when we’re starting to think ‘man it’s so frustrating being an unsigned band, why is the industry not really giving us the attention we feel like we deserve, this is the last time we bloody try this’ we’ll have a great show. There’ll be something on the horizon, a great tour, a cool song. There’s always a carrot at the end of the stick. And, you know, we like spending time together!
JJ: If we can basically make a living of doing this, I think that is incredible. For an original hard rock/heavy metal band in this day and age. That will be a testament to the work we’ve put in.

Musical supernova Jazz Emu (The Guardian’s breakout comedy act of 2023) is coming to Town Hall with his hotly anticipated brand-new show, Knight Fever, alongside his full live band, ‘The Cosmique Perfectión’. Following his run at the Soho Theatre & Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this tour will feature brand new songs, and an appearance from the King himself.
“I was always obsessed with stretchyfaced character actors growing up –Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, Dawn French, Will Ferrell – and always hoped I’d give it a go,” says Archie Henderson, the writer and creator of the musical comedy character Jazz Emu. “The character of a self-indulgent musician came from wanting to find a semi-ironic outlet for the electropop songs I started writing in my bedroom in my early twenties.” He adds, as an aside: “I couldn’t quite face releasing anything earnest, and the character was a great mask for any sincerity.” The character and his music continued to grow during lockdown. “I wrote more and more comedy songs in the character as a way to entertain myself, and I hoped others, through a boring time. I got addicted to expanding the character and his world and didn’t stop.” Since then, Archie has worked to bring Jazz Emu to the stage and has sold out tours in Australia and at the Soho Theatre in London.
How would you describe your music in one sentence?
“A sonically unapologetic and lyrically unwavering tribute to the concept of More is More.”
“All sorts,” says Archie when asked about where he draws inspiration from. “But when I started producing music, I was really trying to emulate RnB producers I was enjoying listening to in the mid-2010s like Jungle and Jai Paul, and big hitters from the olden days like Prince.” It turns out inspiration is as unpredictable as his alter-ego. “Sadly, or maybe happily, my style was far too influenced by listening to stupid bands from the 60s and 70s like Scaffold, and old variety acts like Flanders & Swann, and Flight of The Conchords, and Paul McCartney whenever he’s being a cheeky whimsical guy. The result was, I guess, the monstrosity that is Jazz Emu’s particular concoction of goofy-RnB.” The music evolves, though, and with more projects in the works, it’s back to the drawing board for the award-winning writer and musician.
“More recently I’ve got into studying the genius of songwriters, especially Bowie, Kate Bush, and more Prince and McCartney, to harvest their stylings and try and improve the shape of my songs.”
He’s set to take over the Town Hall stage with his new show ‘Knight Fever’ on Wednesday 12 March. “It’s been one of the biggest learnings of doing this project, just how precisely you have to craft an idea for the context or format in which it’s going to be received. I’ve written full songs, with classic pop structure, which work well for someone listening on Spotify while they make eggs, or onstage with a band and a standing audience.”
Interview: Lerah Mae Barcenilla Photography: Dylan Woodley
He adds: “For these I’ll usually start with the musical idea first – a chorus melody and a beat which I’ll then find the funny idea to write over it. Other times I’ve made short funny songs from a single funny idea which I put to music.”
It seems to be an intricate balance, this process of combining music and comedy in the context of live performance. “As soon as you put either of these onstage in front of a seated comedy audience, they’re either not dense and gag-packed enough, or so dense and loud as to be unintelligible.”
This craft and considering different approaches in writing music to fit the space, shines through with Jazz Emu. “Live comedy songs need a different rhythm and structure completely, really –with more twists and turns and space for the audience to inhale and then exhale through their mouth and/or nose depending on the joke’s success.”
He describes his visual album, ‘Ego Death’, as “a 30-minute comedy concept album extravaganza starring some pretty amazing people including Harry Enfield and Alex Horne.” He’ll be coming to Town Hall on Wednesday 12 March bringing his comedy show with his live band, The Cosmique Perfectión. “It weaves my best and catchiest songs into the silliest of narratives, about Jazz Emu’s ambition to finally become a Knight of the Realm at the hands of His Majesticity. It’s an extremely fun and sensorily stimulating experience.”

You might know him from ‘Mock the Week’, ‘Live at the Apollo’ or ‘Radio 4’. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff.
