We are already into the second month of 2017 and are that much closer to the Class of 2017’s graduation day! The remainder of the second semester will pass quickly for everyone, but particularly for the seniors and their parents. As they experience moments of nostalgia for the past and look forward to the future, the challenge will be to live wholly in the present—and that’s our challenge as well! Know that I keep all of you in my prayers.

There are a few dates on the school calendar I’d like to highlight: • Friday, February 3rd, Feast of St. Blaise, Blessing of the Throats • Monday, February 6th, Mandatory Archdiocesan Teacher In-Service, Alemany High School • Tuesday, February 7th, Faculty Meeting at 7:45 am, 8:45 am start • Friday, February 17th, Grading Period Ends • Monday, February 20th, Presidents’ Day, School Holiday • Friday, February 24th, Faculty In-Service, Religious Ed Congress February has always seemed to me to be a transition month—a quiet time after the holidays and before the excitement of all that is new in the spring. It is always a month of reflection for me—reflection about how I can be a better person and about what more I can be doing for others. There’s the celebration of Valentine’s Day (one of my favorite days—as silly as that may seem) which is an opportunity to say thank you to all those who bring so much love into my life—particularly all of our students here at Bishop Montgomery!

Dorothy Day reminds us in this very beautiful prayer that there is nothing we can do but love. We all do our best to change the world for the better—but when all is said and done, we must remember to love those who are close to us, those who are around us, our enemies as well as our friends, and through that loving, “throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that its ever-widening circle will reach around the world.” In the end, love is all there is.

BE YOU. What we would like to do is change the world—make it a little simpler for people to feed, clothe and shelter themselves as God intended them to do. And to a certain extent, by fighting for better conditions, by crying out unceasingly for the rights of the workers, of the poor, of the destitute—the rights of the worthy and the unworthy poor, in other words—we can to a certain extent change the world; we can work for the oasis, the little cell of joy and peace in a harried world. We can throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that its ever-widening circle will reach around the world.

We repeat, there is nothing that we can do but love, and dear God—please enlarge our hearts to love each other, to love our neighbor, to love our enemy as well as our friend.

Guidance & Curriculum: Ms. Yvette Vigón-Morffi - Vice Principal - ext. 231, Mrs. Casey Dunn - Guidance/Studies Coordinator - ext. 226 GUIDANCE Most of our seniors have now completed their college applications and will turn their attention to the financial aid process. Those who wish to receive financial aid, regardless of the school they ultimately choose to attend, must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, more commonly referred to as the FAFSA. The US Department of Education has updated the FAFSA on the Web website for the 2016-2017 school year at www. fafsa.ed.gov The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the application for federal and state student financial aid. FAFSA applications for the 2017-2018 year will be accepted starting January 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

California’s Cal Grant program requires the FAFSA to be filed by March 2, 2017. In addition, to receive Cal Grant award consideration, a student must have a school certified Grade Point Average (GPA) submitted by March 2, 2017 (Bishop Montgomery submits this for you, so you do NOT have to do anything for the GPA verification).

Colleges will have their own scholarship and financial aid filing deadlines, sometimes earlier than March 2. Students should check on-line with every college under consideration for their scholarship and financial aid deadline.

Because of the variation in state and college deadlines, it is highly recommended that you fill out the FAFSA as soon as you can to ensure that you do not miss out on available aid.Questions on the completing the FAFSA can be made to the Federal Student Aid Information Center email at http://studentaid.ed.gov/resources#free-application-for.

Each year, our counselors stress the importance of submitting the FAFSA as early as possible. The reason for doing so is to give you as much time as possible to review, compare, and analyze each school’s SAR. Having the entire month of April, and possibly part of March, to consider and weigh the financial impact of a college decision is critical in our opinion.

College scholarships generally become more local and talent- or interest-specific during the second semester. Each scholarship opportunity that the school is made aware of in print form is summarized in the Family Connection, daily bulletin, and cataloged in the Guidance Center. Students are encouraged to actively pursue these opportunities, while remaining cognizant of the work involved. Many scholarship applications require as much work, if not more, than a college application. Please encourage your child to pursue appropriate opportunities where he or she will be a competitive applicant.

We hope that you will discuss course selection with your child before re-registration on March 23rd. In addition, student questions will be answered regarding a four-year plan and what is required for college admission. If there are questions you have before these meetings take place, please contact your child’s counselor.

SENIORS Please note that any changes made to your schedule for the spring/second semester must be reported to every school to which you have applied. If you have submitted applications before your class change is made, please be sure that you email each school’s admissions office to let them know what change has been made and why. If you have not submitted your applications, then you may report the class change(s) within your application. It is VERY IMPORTANT to let the admissions office know as soon as possible as it may have a direct impact upon whether or not you are accepted/waitlisted/denied to the school.

HONORS AND AP STUDENTS Honors and AP students who fell below a 70% at the semester as stated in the course catalog have been leveled down to the appropriate course. Again, any senior who has already submitted applications, should immediately contact each school with the change of schedule as stated in the paragraph above.Â

BE DYNAMIC.

Discipline: Ms. Betty Behen - Dean of Women - ext. 234, Mr. Lee Flores - Dean of Men - ext. 232 SWEATSHIRTS BMHS sweatshirts are the only permitted sweatshirts. They do not shrink, so please purchase a size appropriate for your student. No other sweatshirts are permitted and will be confiscated with disciplinary action to follow. During this spring semester, Seniors are permitted to wear an official, non-hooded college sweatshirt of the college they will be attending.

ATTENDANCE Please call the Attendance Office directly if your student is going to be tardy or absent: (310) 540-2021 ext. 233 or (310) 540-3070 in the mornings. We have 24-hour voice mail for your convenience. Please note that a phone call does not necessarily make the tardy or absence an excused one. It merely lets us know that the parent/guardian was aware of the absence or tardy. The nature of the absence or tardy (“excused” or “unexcused”) will be determined by the Deans and Attendance Office. Refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for what constitutes an “excused” absence or tardy. Phone calls must be made the morning of the absence or the absence will be noted as “unexcused.”

NO MESSAGES The Attendance Office and the Front Office staff do not deliver messages during the day. It is both time consuming and disruptive to classes.

DETENTIONS Detentions are to be served by the date indicated on the violation or referral slip. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements for transportation if a detention is to be served. Disregard for assigned detentions may result in a referral or probation. Detentions take precedence over sports practices and school activities (ParentStudent Handbook, pg. 15).

CELL PHONES/SMARTPHONES/SMARTWATCHES ON CAMPUS Please note that students are not permitted to have cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches in their possession during school hours. All students must turn off their cell phones and place them in their locker from the first bell of the day to the last bell of the day. Students may not use cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches during school hours. Any confiscated cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches is subject to having its contents reviewed by an administrator. Cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches kept in backpacks during the school day or used throughout the school day will be confiscated and not returned until the end of the school day after the bell has rung. In cases where a cell phone/ smartphone/smartwatch is confiscated the student will be issued a referral. It is the student’s responsibility to see the Deans to pick up the cellphone/smartphone/smartwatch & referral at the end of the day. The Deans will not call out a student to pick up the cell phone/smartphone/smartwatch. (Parent/Student handbook pg. 22) PROM TIME Prom is just around the corner. As a reminder, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities before or after Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 22)

BE ENGAGED.

DRESS CODE – PROM 2017 Please adhere to the following dress code for prom. Please do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you or an invited guest purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to these guidelines will be asked to leave and will not be permitted to enter the dance. If you are asked to leave, bid money will not be refunded as well as you may leave yourself open to disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.

GENTLEMEN · A tuxedo or suit is required. · Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. · Dress shoes are required. · Please no earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, or canes.

LADIES · Two pairs of earrings may be worn in the lower lobe. Sunglasses are not permitted. · The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts as stated on page 33 of the BMHS Student Handbook. · The dress must be solid material throughout. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). · Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. · Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below midback. · Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming.

DROP OFF PROCEDURES

Parents driving west on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When making a left turn into the west entrance onto campus may drive on to the campus.

2. There is no left turn into the east parking lot.

3. Please drive onto the campus and continue driving until you have arrived at the designated drop-off point located in the east parking lot.

4. There is no student drop-off in front of the school. Please drop-off students in the designated passenger drop-off points located in the east parking lot only. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee.

5. Our safety officer are available to direct and control traffic Parents driving east on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When driving toward the campus, please do not drive onto campus. Parents are to drive east along Torrance Boulevard and enter the east parking lot when dropping of students in the designated drop-off zone. Students are not to be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd.

Please note - U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Torrance Boulevard.

Exiting the east parking lot 1. The only legal exit out of the east parking lot is a right turn towards Palos Verdes Boulevard. All drivers exiting the east parking lot must make a right turn only.

2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is dangerous and causes delays for other parents attempting to exit.

PICKING-UP & DROPPING-OFF OFF-CAMPUS All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pickup and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.

Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

BE INVOLVED.

Activities: Mrs. Milana McDermott - Dean of Student Life - ext. 273 The Activities Department is gearing up for some exciting events and activities this semester. Here are a few highlights: Winter Spirit Week The Bishop community celebrates Winter Spirit Week, along with Catholic Schools’ Week, January 30 through February 3. We will recognize our winter athletic teams, as well as provide fun ways for our students to show their school spirit. Activities include a lunchtime kick-off with our band, drumline, color guard and spirit squads; the Junior Ring Mass and Blessing; class color day; “Lunch-a-palooza;” Black & Gold day; and end with student appreciation day on Friday. Wednesday night is McTeachers Night at McDonalds on Hawthorne Boulevard. BMHS faculty will be there to greet all the Knights that come out to enjoy McDonalds meals and help raise money for the senior class. Don’t miss out!

Junior Ring Blessing – January 31st The Junior Ring Blessing Mass is Tuesday, January 31st. Jostens will be on campus on Thursday, January 26 before school and during lunch to distribute rings that have been paid in full. If you need information on your student’s ring balance, please contact Jostens directly at 805-987-4147 to ensure that your junior has their ring for the Ring Blessing. Contact the Activities Office at ext 273 if you need further information.

Short Flag Team, Band, Drumline and Color Guard Competition Season January through April is competition season for our very talented short flag squad, band, drumline and color guard.

These groups will be busy getting ready for their respective competitions on the weekends, and they appreciate the support of the Bishop Montgomery community. Students and families are welcome to attend the competitions and cheer them on as they represent Bishop Montgomery. Students should listen to announcements for competition dates or ask a member for more details.

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony – February 13th Bishop Montgomery will proudly induct new members into the National Honor Society on February 13. “The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students.

More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.”

ASB Candy Bar Drive ASB will hold their annual See’s Candy Bar drive from February 7 - March 2. This drive helps fund the George Montgomery Leadership Scholarship which is awarded to two seniors each year and helps offset other program expenses. Your support is appreciated!

BE A PART.

ASB Offices for 2017-2018 If your student is interested in developing leadership skills and getting more involved with student life at Bishop, maybe they’d like to serve as a member of student government. An informational meeting will be held during lunch in the Activities Office on Tuesday, January 31. Applications will be distributed during the meeting.

Students should listen to announcements for details.

Club Proposals for 2017-2018 Bishop Montgomery has many active clubs and organizations, with at least one sure to match the interests of each student. Clubs are a great way to be involved at BMHS. If students are interested in proposing a new club for next year, they must attend the informational meeting during lunch on Thursday, March 2 in the Activities Office. New club proposal forms will be available at this meeting.

Thank you to all of you who contribute to the success of our many and diverse extracurricular activities. You truly add to the student experience at BMHS.

AP Exams AP exam payments are due to the Student Store by Friday, February 17. Exams can only ordered if they are paid for in advance. The fee for each exam is $100. If payment is not received by Friday, February 17, exams will not be ordered and your student may not sit for the exam.

BE COMPETITIVE.

Athletics: Mr. Eric Wood - Athletic Director - ext. 269, Mr. Ed Hodgkiss - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 260, Ms. Camille Buckley - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 262 Five Sign Letters-of-Intent Five student-athletes made it official today when they signed their National Letters-of-Intent to continue their athletic careers in college. All five student-athletes earned full scholarships at their respective Division I universities.

Sydney Hall ‘17, a standout on the girls’ volleyball team, signed with East Carolina University. She helped lead the Lady Knights to the CIF quarterfinals.

Nnena Nadozie ‘17 was a 4-year letterwinner and two-time Del Rey League singles champion for BMHS. She helped lead the team to four team league titles. She signed with San Diego State.

Zia Norris ‘17 has been a standout softball player since a young age. She is a two-time all league player. She signed with UCLA. Jordan Schakel ‘17 is a 4-year letterwinner and an All-CIF player for the basketball team. He is currently the 70th ranked player in the country in the senior class and he signed with San Diego State.

Ethan Thompson ‘17 is also a 4-year letterwinner and an All-CIF selection for the basketball team. He is the 34th ranked player in the country in his class and he has signed with Oregon State, where he will join his brother and fellow BMHS alumnus Stephen Thompson, Jr. ‘15.

Football Bishop Montgomery senior football players Bryce Matthews ‘17, Daniel Schubert ‘17, and Myles Stafford ‘17 will represent BMHS in upcoming high school all-star games.

Matthews, the Defensive Player of the Year in the South Catholic League, will play in the West Torrance Lions All-Star Game on January 21 at 6:00pm at Mira Costa HS. Schubert, a first team South Catholic League pick, will play in the West Torrance Lions Game as well.

Stafford, a South Catholic League 2nd team selection, will play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl on January 21 at 10:00am at the Oakland Coliseum.

Boys Basketball The Bishop Montgomery boys’ basketball team will play a nationally-televised game on Monday, January 16 as part of the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, MA. The Knights will take on Montverde Academy (FL) at 12:00pm (PST). The game will be shown live on ESPNU. The Knights are currently ranked 20th in the nation by USA Today. Montverde Academy is ranked #4.

Spring Sports Beginning late February our spring sports will be playing games. Spring is the busiest sports season we have, be sure to come out and catch an event. All schedules can be on found our website and the back of this newsletter.

Since the fund was created, close to $500,000 has been donated by Bishop Montgomery parents, past parents, alumni and friends. Once again, we are asking you, our current BMHS parents, for your support of this important fund. You should have received the Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance letter from Ms. Libbon, or you will receive it soon. We ask that you consider making a gift of $100. GRADUATION 2017 Graduation for the Class of 2017 will be held on Friday, May 26 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive nine tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Questions? Performing Arts: Mr. Eric Hankey - Instrumental and Vocal Music Director NEW ASSISTANTS IN MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Music Department is very fortunate to announce the addition of several assistants and coaches, which will greatly increase the quality of coaching for our students: John Elg: music ministry assistant director J. WINTER GUARD AND DRUMLINE COMPETITIONS BEGIN THIS MONTH Best of luck to our fabulous Winter Guard in its first competition on February 11 and to our excellent Indoor Drumline in its first competition on February 25!

LOS ANGELES CATHOLIC SCHOOLS BAND DAY AT DISNEYLAND! Our BMHS Knight Band & Colorguard is again organizing the Los Angeles Catholic Schools Band Day at Disneyland on Sunday, February 26. KNIGHT MUSIC BOOSTER CLUB The Knight Music Booster Club represents the Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Music Production, Video Production, and Music Ministry. Their meetings are usually on the same Monday nights as Athletic Booster Club and Mother’s Club at 6:00 pm in Room 318 – additional meetings are scheduled as needed. Please join them to help keep the many projects they organize rolling.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT HOURS We are always practicing, planning, and organizing school concerts, local performances, competitions, parades, tours, and many other important things – come on in any day before or after school between 6:30 am - 3:30pm (although we’re often there earlier and later). Ken Deasy - Chaplain - ext. 236 CAMPUS MINISTRY This February we celebrate commitment, leadership, and our students. The Feast of St. Valentine reminds us to stay committed to our relationships as well as strengthen and grow in our bond with others. During Presidents’ Day we take time to honor those leaders who have made major impacts in our own country.

However, we may also reflect on our own leadership roles in our family and community, challenging ourselves to be the change we want to see in our own life.

RETREATS February is a very busy month with both Seniors on Kairos February 1 - 3 followed by the Junior Emmaus retreat February 9 - 10. We are also starting our sophomore retreats at the end of the month. Thank you for your continued prayers for all of the retreatants and their leaders. There are still a few spots available on the March Kairos retreat, so any senior interested in attending, please come to Campus Ministry for a permission slip and more information. Thank you.

SERVICE Thank you to all students and families who donated to January’s Denim Day benefitting Mrs. DeLay’s cousin whose family lost their entire house and belongings in the devastating fires in Tennessee. Need a fiction or non-fiction required reading book for class? Want to check out the new Harry Potter? Want to listen to an audiobook of To Kill a Mockingbird instead of reading it? Need a book to cite for a paper? ….

The new Bishop Montgomery High School Digital Library has you covered.

BMHS is proud to invite students and teachers to access and borrow digital books from our new library service. The new digital collection is accessible on all devices, but most importantly on student Chromebooks.

Chromebooks, PCs, Macs, iPads, Kindles, Nooks, and many more devices are compatible with the new BMHS Digital Library collection. Students reading books digitally can use tools to define words within text, highlight, take notes, bookmark pages, and much more.

The initial additions to the digital collection have been focused on core required reading and current literature for young adults. We’ve a range of new and contemporary fiction. All fiction and non-fiction required reading books are available online to students through our new service. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, BMHS has it. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, BMHS has it. Attack on Titan, BMHS has it. Hamilton, BMHS has it. We’ve so many amazing titles now available for course work or pleasure reading, we’ve something for everyone. Students and facility are also welcome to suggest titles through the service to be included in the collection.

Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned BMHS veteran, Mothers’ Club is the place to be to get your PSI hours!

Please attend our next meeting, February 27 at 7:00pm in the Faculty Center building next to student drop-off parking lot.

This is a great way to build fellowship with other BMHS parents, learn about our school and most importantly, get involved in your child’s education. In addition, you have an opportunity to earn PSI HOURS while meeting new people.

There are twelve (12) Mothers’ Club events during the year that offer opportunities to fulfill your hours, either by chairing an event, working at one, or set up & clean up duty.

Join us for our Monday, February 27 meeting!

We will be discussing upcoming events and looking for chairpersons and volunteers.

Athletics Booster Club Welcome to the 2017 BMHS Booster Club! The BMHS Booster club is designed to provide support for ALL BMHS athletic programs. Joining the Booster Club is easy and fun! Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes. Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions by working in the snack stand, helping with the 50/50 raffle, selling BMHS merchandise and helping to get new members like you! They also provide great support to the Athletic Director, Coaches and Student-Athletes.

Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned one, please plan on attending our monthly meetings. Please mark your calendar for our upcoming February 27 and March 20 meetings at 6:30pm in the BMHS Library. See you there!

Congratulations to the 2016 Damien Mendoza Scholarship Winners: Carlos Bernal, Class of 2017 and Erin Hall, Class of 2018! Carlos & Erin both received onemonth free tuition! The Damien Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete who submit the winning essay of “What It Means to be a Student-Athlete at Bishop Montgomery.” Essays for the 2017 Damien Mednoza Scholarship are due to BMHS Athletic Director Mr. Wood no later than April 17.

Congratulations to the 2016 Kelly Nolan Scholarship Winners: Bernard Amofa, Football and Briana Martin, Girls’ Volleyball. Bernard and Briana both received $100 for the Fall Sports Fee. BMHS Athletic Boosters has funded amazing items for our school with your gracious support. We are excited to help our athletes, and we thank you for continuing to support BMHS Athletic Boosters. Since 2015 we have funded over $17,000 in new equipment and scholarships, and we continue to make a difference for each of our athletic programs.
