From the Principal: Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon, Principal Dear Parents,

2017 - Happy New Year! It hardly seems possible that we’re beginning a new year and are halfway to the Class of 2017’s graduation day. I know our prayers are with our seniors and their parents as they continue with the college application process and await acceptance decisions.

You’ve probably noticed that the lights outside my office are still lit at night. We began our prayer vigil December 9th, the evening of our Christmas Mass for all of those donors who contributed to our Queen of Angels Fund. They will remain lit until January 12th, the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus, which is the end of the Church’s celebration of the Christmas season. I ask that you say a prayer each day of the vigil for all of our generous donors. Our Christmas lights, a symbol of the many generous gifts to the students of Bishop Montgomery, has become a lovely Christmas season tradition. Your generosity as well as the generosity of our alumni and past parents is certainly cause for celebration. Each of these donors, each of these gifts, lights our community with care and love and we are very thankful.

As we begin this new year of 2017, it’s good to remember that no matter what 2017 holds for us, that God’s love for us is unconditional and so we trust in His promise to care for us no matter our challenges. At the beginning of this New Year, I share this prayer which I love because it reminds me that our call to “continue the pilgrimage” to find Jesus continues long after Christmas is over. I hope that this prayer speaks to you as much as it speaks to me.

“Once they saw a star that pointed to a promised land, to a land of peace: peacemakers set out to follow that star, both a joyful and an arduous journey. Sometimes the start shines brightly, the promise seems certain, and the pilgrims can sing, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring God’s peace.” Often the star disappears, is clouded over, hidden from view, and the pilgrims grope blindly, grow discouraged, get weary, give thought to settling down, to forgetting the promise of peace.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required for students who wish to receive financial aid from a given college or university. The online applications may be accessed at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Similar to the college application process, the electronic application is the preferred method of submission. Before starting the FAFSA, both you and your child will need to apply for the FSA ID, which consists of a user-created username and password. The FSA ID allows users to electronically access personal information on Federal Student Aid Web sites as well as electronically sign a FAFSA. The FSA ID may be accessed at https://fsaid.ed.gov.

WORK PERMITS

Is your student looking for work? Work permit applications are found in the Academics, Guidance section of the BMHS website. If you need a work permit you must first download and complete the form before making an appointment to see your counselor.

Discipline: Ms. Betty Behen - Dean of Women - ext. 234, Mr. Lee Flores - Dean of Men - ext. 232 ATTENDANCE Please call the Attendance Office directly if your student is going to be tardy or absent: (310) 540-2021 ext. 233 or (310) 540-3070 in the mornings. We have 24-hour voice mail for your convenience. Please note that a phone call does not necessarily make the tardy or absence an excused one. It merely lets us know that the parent/guardian was aware of the absence or tardy. The nature of the absence or tardy (“excused” or “unexcused”) will be determined by the Deans and Attendance Office. Refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for what constitutes an “excused” absence or tardy. Phone calls must be made the morning of the absence or the absence will be noted as “unexcused.”

DETENTIONS Detentions are to be served by the date indicated on the violation or referral slip. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements for transportation if a detention is to be served. Disregard for assigned detentions may result in a referral or probation. Detentions take precedence over sports practices and school activities (ParentStudent Handbook, pg. 15).

NO MESSAGES The Attendance Office and the Front Office staff do not deliver messages during the day. It is both time consuming and disruptive to classes.

PROM TIME Prom is just around the corner. As a reminder, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities before or after Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 22) DRESS CODE – PROM 2017 Please adhere to the following dress code for prom. Please do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you or an invited guest purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to these guidelines will be asked to leave and will not be permitted to enter the dance. If you are asked to leave, bid money will not be refunded as well as you may leave yourself open to disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.

GENTLEMEN · A tuxedo or suit is required. · Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. · Dress shoes are required. · Please no earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, or canes.

BE ENGAGED.

LADIES · Two pairs of earrings may be worn in the lower lobe. Sunglasses are not permitted. · The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts as stated on page 33 of the BMHS Student Handbook. · Dress must be solid material throughout. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). · Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. · Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below midback. · Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming.

Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Student attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste. Freshmen, as well as guests over the age of twenty (20) are not allowed to attend prom.

DROP OFF PROCEDURES

Parents driving west on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When making a left turn into the west entrance onto campus may drive on to the campus.

2. There is no left turn into the east parking lot.

3. Please drive onto the campus and continue driving until you have arrived at the designated drop-off point located in the east parking lot.

4. There is no student drop-off in front of the school. Please drop-off students in the designated passenger drop-off points located in the east parking lot only. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee.

5. Our safety officer are available to direct and control traffic

Parents driving east on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When driving toward the campus, please do not drive onto campus. Parents are to drive east along Torrance Boulevard and enter the east parking lot when dropping of students in the designated drop-off zone. Students are not to be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd.

Please note - U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Torrance Boulevard.

Exiting the east parking lot 1. The only legal exit out of the east parking lot is a right turn towards Palos Verdes Boulevard. All drivers exiting the east parking lot must make a right turn only.

2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is dangerous and causes delays for other parents attempting to exit.

PICKING-UP & DROPPING-OFF OFF-CAMPUS All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pickup and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.

Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

Here are some important dates for this month: BMHS HOBY State Leadership Representatives The Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program (HOBY) is designed to empower high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and community.

Students attend a three day seminar to participate in hands-on leadership activities, and explore their personal leadership skills, while learning how to lead others and make a positive impact in the community.

JUNIOR RINGS Jostens will be outside of the Activities Office in January to collect ring balances and distribute rings. Please note the date and remind your student that they should not miss this opportunity to pay their balance and pick up their ring, so they have them for the Mass and Junior Ring Blessing on January 31.

before school and during lunch NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY “The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.”

Current 10th, 11th, and 12th graders who meet the initial requirement of a minimum weighted, cumulative GPA of 3.75 may apply for membership in the National Honor Society. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK/WINTER SPIRIT WEEK Bishop Montgomery will celebrate Winter Spirit Week during Catholic Schools Week January 30 – February 3.

This week will promote our Catholic identity, school spirit, recognize our winter athletic teams, and enjoy some fun activities. Everyone is looking forward to the 8th Annual Student vs. Faculty Volleyball Match on Friday, February 3! Come out and support your favorite team! GO KNIGHTS!

YEARBOOKS A paper invoice for the yearbook (optional) will be mailed to each family in November.

The cost of the yearbook is as follows: Cost Deadline $125 December 1st $150 After December 1st to February 1st $175 After Yearbook Distribution (*students are not guaranteed a yearbook) To be sure your student receives a yearbook, please return the invoice/order form no later than Feb. 1.

Form may be mailed or brought/dropped off in the tuition office.

COLLEGE ATHLETIC COMMITMENTS Five student-athletes made it official on Tuesday, November 15 when they signed their National Letters-of-Intent to continue their athletic careers in college. All five student-athletes earned full scholarships at their respective Division I universities.

Sydney Hall ‘17, a standout on the girls’ volleyball team, signed with East Carolina University. She helped lead the Lady Knights to the CIF quarterfinals.

Nnena Nadozie ‘17 was a 4-year letterwinner and two-time Del Rey League singles champion for BMHS. She helped lead the team to four team league titles. She signed with San Diego State.

Zia Norris ‘17 has been a standout softball player since a young age. She is a two-time all league player. She signed with UCLA. Jordan Schakel ‘17 is a 4-year letterwinner and an All-CIF player for the basketball team. He is currently the 70th ranked player in the country in the senior class and he signed with San Diego State.

Ethan Thompson ‘17 is also a 4-year letterwinner and an All-CIF selection for the basketball team.

He is the 34th ranked player in the country in his class and he has signed with Oregon State, where he will join his brother and fellow BMHS alumnus Stephen Thompson, Jr. ‘15.

QUEEN OF ANGELS TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND The Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance Fund was created in 2012 in order to help current Bishop Montgomery students. Since the fund was created, close to $500,000 has been donated by Bishop Montgomery parents, past parents, alumni and friends. Once again, we are asking you, our current BMHS parents, for your support of this important fund. You should have received the Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance letter from Ms. Libbon, or you will receive it soon. We ask that you consider making a gift of $100. However, any gift that you are comfortable making is a blessing and will make an impact in the lives of our students.

KNIGHT MUSIC BOOSTER CLUB The Knight Music Booster Club represents the Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Music Production, Video Production, and Music Ministry. Their meetings are usually on the same Monday nights as Athletic Booster Club and Mother’s Club at 6:00 pm in room 318. Additional meetings are scheduled as needed. Please join them to help keep the many projects they organize rolling.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT HOURS We’re always practicing, planning, and organizing school concerts, local performances, competitions, parades, tours, and lots of other important things. Come on in any day before or after school 6:30 am - 3:30pm (although we’re often there earlier and later). GRADUATION 2017 Graduation for the Class of 2017 will be held on Friday, May 26 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive nine tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Questions? Campus Ministry: Dorothy Morski - Co-Campus Minister - ext. 243, Amy Hendry - Co-Campus Minister - ext. 236, Fr. Ken Deasy - Chaplain - ext. 236 CAMPUS MINISTRY This January as we remember the ideals and truths that Martin Luther King Jr. stood for, we reflect on his words, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” At Bishop we strive to offer students multiple ways to serve others through various clubs and organizations, but we also seek to model how giving to others is in the everyday. It is in the simple actions of listing, helping, and being there for others that we start truly being present and understanding one another.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK We look forward to the start of Catholic Schools Week on Jan 30 where we join in with all of our local schools celebrating communities of faith, knowledge, and service. During this week we join together in community for our whole school Mass where Juniors will receive their rings.

RETREATS On February 1-3 senior students will partake in our February Kairos retreat being led by Allison Bell, Alyssa Heisen, Tanner Griffin, Jayla-Kalina Hines, Chris Leeds, Emilie Bero, Simon Tran, and Caterina Valdovinos.

Also, please begin praying for those seniors as well as those juniors attending the Emmaus Retreat in February. Spots are still available for the February Junior retreat and the March Kairos retreat. Students should stop by Campus Ministry for a permission slip and more information. Thank you.

SERVICE Thank you to all students and families who donated to December’s Denim Day and continue to keep Jake, a local student undergoing surgery for a brain tumor, in your prayers. We were able to raise over $800 for him.

On January 11 we will be having another Denim Day. Students are welcome to wear denim for bringing in $2 or more to benefit Mrs. DeLay’s cousin whose family lost their entire house and belongings in the devastating fire in Tennessee. Any donations are greatly appreciated. May God Bless you for your generosity.

BMHS is proud to invite students and teachers to access and borrow digital books from our new library service. The new digital collection is accessible on all devices, but most importantly on student Chromebooks.

Chromebooks, PCs, Macs, iPads, Kindles, Nooks, and many more devices are compatible with the new BMHS Digital Library collection. Students reading books digitally can use tools to define words within text, highlight, take notes, bookmark pages, and much more.

The initial additions to the digital collection have been focused on core required reading and current literature for young adults. We’ve a range of new and contemporary fiction. All fiction and non-fiction required reading books are available online to students through our new service. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, BMHS has it. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, BMHS has it. Attack on Titan, BMHS has it. Hamilton, BMHS has it. We’ve so many amazing titles now available for course work or pleasure reading, we’ve something for everyone. Students and faculty are also welcome to suggest titles through the service to be included in the collection.

Athletics Booster Club Welcome to the 2017 BMHS Booster Club! The BMHS Booster club is designed to provide support for ALL BMHS athletic programs. Joining the Booster Club is easy and fun! Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes. Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions by working in the snack stand, helping with the 50/50 raffle, selling BMHS merchandise and helping to get new members like you! They also provide great support to the Athletic Director, Coaches and Student-Athletes.

Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned one, please plan on attending our monthly meetings. Please mark your calendar for our upcoming January 23 and February 27 meetings at 6:30pm in the BMHS Library. See you there!

Congratulations to the 2016 Damien Mendoza Scholarship Winners: Carlos Bernal, Class of 2017 and Erin Hall, Class of 2018! Carlos & Erin have both received one-month free tuition! The Damien Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete who submit the winning essay of “What It Means to be a Student-Athlete at Bishop Montgomery.” Essays are due in April each year.

Congratulations to the 2016 Kelly Nolan Scholarship Winners: Bernard Amofa, Football and Briana Martin, Girls’ Volleyball. Bernard and Briana both received $100 for the Fall Sports Fee. BMHS Athletic Boosters has funded amazing items for our 2016 - 2017 school year with your support: Baseball Wind Screen $3,165.00, Girls Golf polo shirts $565.00, and a Cross Country Presentation Board $380.00! We are so excited to help our athletes and we thank you for continuing to support BMHS Athletic Boosters.
