Interestingly, switching non-compliant CPAP patients to BiLevel therapy can result in high compliance, with improved sleep test results, as shown in a 2018 study published in the Journal SLEEP conducted retrospectively with 1496 noncompliant CPAP patients.

Another study published in 2020 by CHEST found a trend towards lower leakage, higher compliance, and more efficient treatment when compared to CPAP. Even more compelling was a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine that found BiPAP was more effective for all levels of sleep apnea including complicated, severe or higher pressure cases.

EPAP (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure) therapy presents a unique approach to managing sleep apnea and snoring. It operates by applying pressure solely during expiration, creating an environment that encourages natural air intake during inhalation. The increased pressure during exhalation aids in keeping the airways open. Administered via a nasal valve or mask, EPAP therapy is emerging as a popular alternative to traditional CPAP therapy.

Although currently smaller in size, the market for CPAP Alternatives, including EPAP therapy, in Australia shows promising potential for expansion. As per a study conducted by Research and Markets, the Australian CPAP Alternatives sector held a market value of AUD $10.5 million in 2020. It is forecasted to demonstrate a steady growth, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.2% projected for the period of 2021 to 2028. This projected growth is due to a rising consumer preference for non-invasive therapeutic options, coupled with the advent of innovative EPAP devices in the market, which BMedical is excited to be leading.

Bongo Rx Sleep Therapy

Bongo Rx is a CPAP alternative designed to treat mild to moderate sleep apnoea and snoring.

Bongo Rx is a combination nasal dilator and nasal EPAP (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure) device that is designed to keep the airway open and relieve mild-moderate OSA and snoring. During inhalation, the nasal dilation allows a unrestricted breath in; during exhalation, the small valves close to generate EPAP pressure between 8-13cm H20, to keep the airway open.

The Bongo Rx is a travel-friendly solution and can be used on planes, ships, trains, and buses, and also while camping as it is discreet and does not require a power source. Unlike Provent and Theravent, Bongo Rx is reusable and does not require any preparation of the skin to be effective.

OptiPillow Reusable EPAP Mask

Optipillow is a CPAP alternative designed to relieve snoring and mild-moderate OSA.

During Inhalation the user inhales through their nose as normal. During exhalation, the small valve in the device will partially close generating an EPAP pressure.

The EPAP pressure generated during exhalation can be adjusted by rotating the sleeve at the front of the device to open or close the valve.

+ With the valve fully open, OptiPillow can generate 1 to 3cm H2O of pressure

+ With the valve 50% closed, OptiPillow can generate 3 to 7cm H2O of pressure (similar resistance to Theravent Regular)

CPAP Alternatives

NightShift Lateral Sleep Positioner

The NightShift Lateral Sleep Positioner reduces the effects of Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnea (POSA) and snoring by keeping the sleeper out of the supine position. The user can choose how they prefer to wear the device, on the back of the neck or around the chest.

The NightShift device detects when the user is sleeping in the supine position and begins to vibrate. It will increase the vibrations until the user repositions into a different sleeping position. Users can program the therapy to begin after 15 minutes or 30 minutes.

This gravity-dependent Oscillatory Positive Expiratory Pressure (OPEP) device is the next-generation model that employs improved airflow for higher-intensity vibrations.

Inside the Shaker Deluxe, a weighted ball lifts during an exhale and descends naturally. This up-and-down movement produces a vibration.
