Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline she possessed when at the age of 15 she was the first female winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me Auctioneering is about giving a lot of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.” Her style, fundraising insight and commitment to her clients, and their mission, not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.”

For 15 years prior to becoming a full time Fundraising Professional, Ms. Michalek owned and operated several nationally recognized vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so whenever I set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again, and I still set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”

3 Gourmet Greek Dinner, Wine Tasting, Live Greek Music Performance and Artist’s Studio Tour for Six! Join 2016-17 YSO artist Sandra M. Dean and her husband David Bilides as they host a multilayered and celebratory Greek dinner for six at the artist’s Tieton Lofts studio.

Appetizers and dinner will be accompanied by a trio of hard-to-find, lively and elegant Greek wines (from a dry rose’ to a sultry red), all made from a variety of indigenous grapes. Dessert and coffee hour includes a live demonstration of traditional Greek music, featuring Sandra on violin and David on santouri (a Greek hammered dulcimer). The evening will conclude with a simple Greek dance taught by the hosts. Sandra and David spent three summers in Greece studying the language, performing music and traveling throughout the country to explore and appreciate new cultural horizons. The YSO and Children's Village jointly offer an evening at the Village of dining, music and friendship. Four (4) people from the YSO's Raise the Baton event and four (4) people from Children's Village's Passion for the Village event will share this extraordinary evening.

6 “Time Ball” by Ann Bowker - 25 year anniversary!

Acrylic, 1992. This piece was used for the YSO 1993-1994 season poster. It was recently gifted back to the YSO and is looking for its next appreciative owner.

Artist's Statement April 2017: "This is an acrylic painting done on East Indian village paper, a handmade paper unique in that the textures and edges of each piece of watercolor paper reflect the touch of the individual who made it. It is so heavy and rigid that it will stand leaning on a wall. I work with thin washes of paint - often as many layers as 10-15.

This gives the paintings almost a glow as the transparencies don't block out the layers underneath the last addition. Some areas are painted with more opaque colors. The woman's image was developed from numerous photos I have taken over the years at Pow Wows. This is not a portrait of a specific person. The Time Ball is a memory saving item that is started by a woman on the event of her marriage. A bead or other artifact is added to the twine as special occasions occur during the woman's progress through her life."
