‘Being No One, Going Nowhere’ is not one to miss BY JASMINE ROBINSON Originating in Portland, Oregon, STRFKR has redefined the boundaries of indie rock and pop, creating a genre of its own. Spacey, dancey, and hypnotic, STRFKR’s 2016 album “Being No One, Going Nowhere” is not one to miss.

The song “Maps” is one of my favorites. With emphasis on the unknown, it carries the listener to a spacey, almost unreal setting. I imagine something going wrong with a spaceship. The crew members come to the realization that they will not survive, which is depicted in the song with a melodious, crashing, echoing church bell-like sequence.

“In The End,” with its fast-paced synthpop basis, is a quirky and fun addition to the album. Recently, a friend convinced me that it was a good idea to set it as my phone ringtone. The jubilant, synthy arpeggios, highlighted with light keyboard set “In The End” apart from the more serious songs on the album.

“Open Your Eyes” is the song that assures the listener that everything is going to be okay. The instrumentals of “Open Your Eyes” are incredible, with steady percussion and guitar patterns in the calmer parts leading seamlessly to the action-packed chorus. I love this song for the musicality, the vibes, and the message of hope that it conveys.
