INGLIS CLASSIC Classic catalogue has buyers spoilt for choice From the first lot, a bay or brown filly by Your Song and from stakes placed multiple city winner Headsup (NZ) (Thorn Park), to the last, a bay filly by Stratum from Viking Hero’s citywinning half-sister Gypsy Gogol (Secret Savings), the catalogue for the 2016 Inglis Classic Sale at Newmarket has a yearling to suit every buyer.

he first Sydney sale of the year, from February 6-8, Inglis Classic has 575 youngsters catalogued.

“After being inundated with more than 1400 entries, every yearling was analysed using the Inglis bloodstock team’s rigorous selection process, and we are confident we have the type for every buyer among the 575 final selections,” Jonathan D’Arcy, Inglis national bloodstock director said. “Buyers will find an exceptional variety on offer at Classic this year, from precocious two year-olds and sprinting greats

to Derby types and classic performers, all by a strong selection of sires.”

The sale begins at 6pm on February 6, following racing at Randwick and will feature progeny by a range of sires including I Am Invincible (30 Lots), Star Witness (28), Hinchinbrook (26), Denman (22), Your Song (21), Dream Ahead (20), Nicconi (18), Smart Missile (15), Excelebration (13), Choisir (12), Delago Deluxe (12), Sebring (11), Foxwedge (11), So You Think (10), Stratum (9) and Snitzel (8).

This season alone, nine Inglis Classic graduates have won 12 stakes races, including the Underwood Stakes-Gr.1 with Mourinho for buyer and part owner Leo Tartaglione, and two black-type two year-old contests for last year’s leading buyer Tony McEvoy. For a combined purchase price of under $400,000, the season’s nine stakes-winning Inglis Classic graduates have put their names to earnings in excess of $3m.

The potential of the stock in this year’s catalogue is no different with some of Australia’s best performing families represented. I Am Invincible has 30 quality yearlings catalogued including Lot 501. The colt, out of Tale of the Cat mare Docherty Woods, was bred by Bernie Howlett, breeder of I Am Invincible’s multiple Gr.1 winner and Inglis Classic graduate and sire in the making Brazen Beau.

Among 17 Lots by Widden Stud’s Nicconi, is a brother to Tony McEvoy’s Gr.3-winning two year-old and fellow Inglis Classic graduate Concealer (ex Beauty Kit by Tale of the Cat), to be offered as Lot 408 from Riverdene Stud.

Delivering great early results for owners and pinhookers from his first crop, Smart Missile is represented by 15 lots at the Classic, including Lot 359, a colt from Zaby Zaby (NZ) (Zabeel).

This youngster’s dam is a half-sister to Tycoon Lil and from the family of Empress Lily and recent stakes-winner Ygritte.

Eight Lots by leading sire Snitzel will be offered, including Lot 17 from the Arrowfield Stud draft. The colt, from Hussterics (Hussonet), is a half-brother to fellow Inglis Classic graduate Lady Jivago, winner of four of her seven starts including the 2015 $250,000 Inglis Classic-RL. Ambergate Farm, vendors of Smart Missile’s first stakes winner Sassy ‘N’ Smart, will offer as Lot 369, a bay filly by Dream Ahead from Al Sahra (Desert Sun). This yearling is a halfsister to handy stakes-winning Inglis Classic graduate Alart.

There are some high-class race mares represented by progeny including Heavenly Glow (Spinning World), the Australian Champion Three Year-Old of 2007-08 and winner of the Australian Oaks and Arrowfield Stud Stakes, Her filly, Lot 2, is by Lope de Vega and is a half-sister to city winner Another Prayer. The Flight Stakes-Gr.1 winner Danglissa (Danzero), dam of four winners and second dam of Euryale, has a filly (Lot 478) by Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, one of the high-class performers who have their first yearlings on offer.

For a combined purchase price of under $400,000, the season’s nine stakes-winning Inglis Classic graduates have put their names to earnings in excess of $3m.

Others with first crop yearlings at the Classic are Melbourne Cup hero Americain, Frankel’s close relation Bullet Train, Gr.1 juvenile winner Crowded House, proven international sire and Arc and Derby winner Dalakhani, Gr.1-winning two and three-yearold Delago Deluxe, outstanding European miler Excelebration, star juvenile Harbour Watch. Inglis Classic graduates excel in Inglis Race Series The Inglis Race Series offers connections of every horse offered at an Inglis Select Yearling Sale and nominated to the series the chance to enjoy a multitude of riches in their two, three and four-year-old racing seasons.

“T

he quality of competitors in Inglis Race Series events cannot be disputed, with the likes of international Group 1 winner Starspangledbanner, and multiple Group 1 winners Sincero and Cosmic Endeavour just some of the champions to have Inglis Race Series events in their resume,” said Inglis National Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy.

“The Inglis Nursery is certainly no exception to that, having started the careers of Golden Slipper winner Mossfun in 2013, and Odyssey Moon in 2014, which went on to be the only

juvenile in his crop to compete in all three legs of the Australian two-year-old Triple Crown,” D’Arcy added.

Following the doubling of prizemoney in 2015 to $500,000, the Inglis Nursery attracted an outstanding field of two-year-olds, with Inglis Classic graduate Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt x Extremely) coming out on top in the 1000m contest run on 12 December at Royal Randwick.

Mick Price was obliged to trial his talented colt earlier in the week to be cleared to race in New South Wales, a trial which he won filling his trainer with confidence. That confidence

was rewarded when Extreme Choice cruised to victory on debut in a race record-breaking win in 56.85 seconds.

“He’s a natural, a pure sprinting colt. We’ll get him back to Melbourne, give him a breather and get him to the Blue Diamond,” said Price.

The colt jumped well and dived along the inside to share the lead with So Serene, where at the 200m mark he found a kick and drew away to a thrilling finish under the guidance of Glyn Schofield, who said “he’s a nice colt with a natural speed and a turn of foot. He was still a bit green but he’ll keep learning and has a bright future.”

A further initiative in 2015 was a $50,000 Vendor Bonus and a $50,000 Supplier Bonus, awarded to those named on the respective Inglis Yearling Sale catalogue and entry form of the Inglis Nursery winner. Bell River Thoroughbreds were fortunate to be named as both and were awarded the full $100,000.

“I said to my wife before the race morning good luck like this doesn’t happen to us it happens to other people, but I was wrong. We couldn’t be more thrilled, it’s an incredible initiative by Inglis,” said Bell River Thoroughbreds’ Andrew Ferguson.

“I’m about to go out and give Extremely an extra special pat!” added Ferguson.

Mick Price purchased Extreme Choice for $100,000 at last year’s Classic sale on the advice of his Bloodstock Manager Luke Wilkinson.

The colt is now owned by a large group of owners, headed by Shane and Karen Walter’s Clarke Kent Syndicate, who are no strangers to Inglis Race Series success.

“This is only the second horse we’ve been involved in. The first, Hunger, another Inglis Classic graduate, won the Inglis Trophy as a three-year-old. After he retired we were looking for another horse to have some fun with and I was set on Extreme Choice,” said Shane Walter.

“He had a real presence about him, a lovely walk and he was a nice type. If he keeps kicking goals we’ll be looking for a third!” added Walter.

ater on the same day, the $250,000 Inglis Sprint was held over 1100m for the first time in 2015, and was won by another Inglis Classic graduate, Lady Sniper (Snippetson x Lady Titus) under the guidance of Jason Collett. Trained by Bjorn Baker, who was the under-bidder on the $20,000 purchase, the three-year-old took her earnings to more than ten times her purchase price in fewer than ten starts.

Craig Rounsefell of Boomer Bloodstock International secured the filly at the sale, and was delighted with the price despite her lacklustre pedigree, saying “she was a really nice type, I thought I would have had to go a lot higher to secure her, but she went for a great price and she has come along in leaps and bounds since then.”

Lady Sniper was bred by Fred Peisah at his prolific thoroughbred nursery, Lomar Park Stud, and originally consigned through their draft at the 2013 Inglis Weanling and Broodmare Sale, before being pinhooked by Andrew Baddock through the Widden Stud draft at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale the following year.

The $20,000 purchase for Boomer Bloodstock was deep in the field for the majority of the race, and despite having to coast wide she gained good ground to finish ahead of the field by a neck for trainer Bjorn Baker, who said after the race “Lady Sniper was a $20,000 purchase and here she is winning a big race for

her owners. This is what racing is all about!’’

Baker said.

“She will go on to better things because I believe she is definitely a stakes-class filly in the making. I was pretty confident for the owners that we would be alright in the race and that we’d be right in the finish. She is a lovely big filly and is still only lightly raced, the best is ahead of her,’’ Baker added.

As with all Inglis Race Series events, the connections of both Extreme Choice and Lady Sniper received outstanding prizes from Swarovski Optik and Antler Luggage.

Trainers received a pair of Swarovski Optik EL 42 Swarovision binoculars, and jockeys and managing owners awarded Antler suitcases.

The sires of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and Lady Sniper (Snippetson) are represented by five and seven yearlings respectively at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. This year the sale will kick off with a night session, at 6.00pm Saturday 6 February, following racing at Royal Randwick that day featuring the $250,000 Inglis Classic race for two-year-olds. Also carrying black type is the $250,000 Inglis Premier race which will be run at Caulfield on the same day.

Bhi-ming all the way from Broadwater From Broadwater to Bhima, the Fleming family are planning to create another legacy at one of Australia’s most famed thoroughbred nurseries in the heart of Scone.

I

n June 2015 Broadwater Thoroughbreds’ Mike and Kate Fleming identified an opportunity too good to refuse and set about chasing their dream to one day own a piece of pristine land where they could continue to breed and raise top quality thoroughbreds.

The opportunity was Bhima. Based on 396 acres across a combination of river flats and hill country in Australia’s horse capital Scone, the historic property features an 18-box stable barn, horse walker, covered round yard with adjacent yards, a six-box vet hospital (with underground heating and elevated night watch office), two vet areas, and two separate three-box stable barns, a breeders dream…So with that, the Fleming’s managed to negotiate a successful deal and the rest is history – quite literally.

Bhima’s rich vein of history began in the 1970’s under the guidance of Vivian Bath who stood the great stallion Biscay and reared many other black type winners, before the White family purchased the property in 1994 which saw them make further enhancements.

The results saw victories in the AJC Derby,

Rosehill Guineas, Ranvet, George Main, Queen Elizabeth and a raft of other Group 1’s during their reign. All in all, the Bhima property can lay claim to 200 plus graduates thus far which have amassed over $27million in earnings; proving to be a nursery for exceptional thoroughbreds across five decades.

“So for us to move from Broadwater, it had to be for an exceptional farm and Bhima is just that.”

The Flemings are super excited about their new acquisition and look forward to building on their success with clients which has so far seen them foal down or raise stakes performers in four short years at Broadwater, highlighted

by First Seal, Ready For Victory, Scissor Kick, Heavens Above, Bound For Earth, Heatherly,

Top Me Up and Group 1 Singapore-based sprinter Super One. “This is truly an exciting time for us as a family and a business, and it’s an honour to be taking over such a beautiful and historic property which has seen so much success over the years.

“Operating under the Broadwater banner for the past four years has allowed Kate and I to experience great success and offer clients the opportunity to have their bloodstock born and raised on what I believe is one of the best pieces of land in the Upper Hunter at Broadwater,” explained Mike Fleming.

“So for us to move from Broadwater, it had to be for an exceptional farm and Bhima is just that,” beamed the New Zealand-born horseman.

“This really is a dream come true…So many champion thoroughbreds have either stood, been born, raised or somehow connected to a long line of Group 1 winners from the grounds of this property, so we want to carry on that tradition and build a legacy of our own for years to come.”

Some of those thoroughbreds based at Bhima which Fleming refers to includes one of Australia’s most influential stallions, Biscay who stood at stud in the 1970’s. He sired Bletchingly whose progeny include the only horse to have won three straight Cox Plates, Kingston Town, champion mare Emancipation who won 16 black type races including six at elite level and champion Canny Lad who sired Shantha’s Choice, the dam of multiple champion sire Redoute’s Choice and Manhattan Rain.

“The Bath and White families achieved many wonderful things at Bhima and we hope to continue that rich line of history.”

At this stage Bhima will be offering more than twenty yearlings at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from February 6 to 8 which includes representation from sires including Lonhro, Medaglia d’Oro, Sebring, Smart Missile, I Am Invincible, Hinchinbrook and exciting freshman All Too Hard.

Lot 513 colt by Nicconi x Dressed A strong leggy colt who’s a great mover and out of a Zabeel mare. He should appeal for a buyer looking for a classic type of horse.

Lot 554 colt by Husson x Freedom Belle A lovely forward colt out of a strong blacktype family. He moves well and has a great attitude and constitution.

Boom time for renowned stud With a string of top line graduates coming off the farm the 2016 draft is an absolute must-see.

ureka Stud on the Darling Downs in Queensland has been a prolific producer of well-bred and successful racehorses since 1935. They have enjoyed recent success thanks to the deeds of Gr.1 winners Tinto (Queensland Oaks), Temple of Boom (Galaxy Stakes), and Spirit of Boom (William Reid Stakes and Doomben 10,000).

Scott McAlpine and his team are presenting five nice yearlings at the 2016 Inglis Classic Sale including two Smart Missiles – a filly and a colt, a lovely Nicconi colt and two nice types (a filly and a colt) by All American. We recently caught up with Scott to chat about his draft and Eureka Stud.

Q. What are some of the best horses to come off Eureka Stud?

A. We’ve had many great horses come off the farm. Spirit of Boom and Temple of Boom are two of our recent stars. To name a few others, we’ve had Just Now win the AJC Oaks-Gr.1 and Turnbull Stakes-Gr2, Eureka Jewel who ran second in the Oaks after winning the Adrian Knox-Gr.3, Scenic Warrior win the Sandown Guineas-Gr.2, Skalato who was first past the post in the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 and Shiva’s Revenge who won the SA Derby before going on to place runner-up in the Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 and Australian Cup-Gr.1.

Q. How long have you been selling at the Inglis Classic Sale?

A. We’ve been around since 1935 however 2015 was our first year selling at the Inglis Classic. The highlight for us last year was selling a Hinchinbrook colt out of Encosta de Lago mare Yarranabbe for $65,000 and then seeing him fetch $200,000 for his owners at the New Zealand Ready To Run sale six months later.

Q. When do you begin your sale preparation? What methods do you use?

We work off an 11-12 week preparation. We don’t own a mechanical horse walker. All of

our yearlings are exercised off a lead pony or hand walked. They’re trot and cantered for 5kms, three days a week. The horses are stabled during the day and are back in their yards of a night time. We’ve got six lead ponies that put in the hard yards - four are Piccolo geldings. They love us on Fridays and hate us on Mondays.

We’ve had many great horses come off the farm. Spirit of Boom and Temple of Boom are two of our recent stars.

Q. What can you tell us about your draft?

A. Lot 85 is our lovely Nicconi colt out of Dash For Cash mare Lucky Toss. The dam, whilst not a big mare has a lot of heart and won four races for Tony Gollan. This colt is from one of our oldest families tracing back to one of our foundation stallions, Lumley Road, who we purchased from Tattersalls back in 1966. The dam is a half-sister to stakes winners Scenic Warrior (by Brave Warrior) and Stanzaic (by Raise a Stanza (USA)) and is closely related to Gr.1 winners Just Now and Shiva’s Revenge as well as many other black type performers.

Our Smart Missile colt (Lot 104) is a late November foal but he has good size about him and is developing into a lovely horse already – very forward for his age. He’s out of citywinning Flying Spur mare Matinee whose two winners to date include 7-times winner Daytime Dazzler (by Red Dazzler) and Tiyatro (by Encosta de Lago) – a winner of two races who ran second to Spirit of Boom on debut.

Tiyatro’s first foal recently won a jump-out in Brisbane.

Lot 221 is an All American filly out of four-time winning Redoute’s Choice mare

Craftiness

Rosecutter. A half-sister to Craftiness, twice placed at Gr.3 level and a winner of six races and over $250,000 in stakes to date, this horse is a lovely strong filly.

I’m excited by Lot 385. This is a lovely horse, also by All American. The dam’s second foal

by Sebring, Congressional, is trained by Mick Price has won a trial at Cranbourne and shown good promise.

Our final yearling being offered is our Smart Missile filly out of winning General Nediym mare Eureka Moment. The dam is a half-sister to Gr.2 winning Kaapstad mare Kapsdan who was Joint Top 2yo filly in New Zealand in 2003-04. She’s a really nice filly.

Highlights abound Fairview Park Stud are bringing a strong draft to Classic including four by Hinchinbrook.

F

airview Park Stud is located at Grose Wold in the Hawkesbury Valley and consists of 150 acres on the Grose River.

The team at Fairview is proud of what they have achieved over the years, earning a reputation of producing winners through the deeds of 2014 Gr.1 Golden Slipper victor Mossfun (Mossman), stakeswinner I Love This City and many other successful graduates. In conjunction with its clients, many of whom are always trying to upgrade its broodmares, Fairview continues to present quality yearlings at the sales including Classic.

Their 2014 Classic draft were two year-olds last season and already has several promising horses including Niccoco (Nicconi) who is a city winner from only a handful of starts. Both Niccoco and Unequivocal are out of Chocaholic (General Nediym) who has a colt in this draft, Lot 457, by Nicconi making him a full brother to Niccoco. This is the family of Gr.1 placed Slanchyvah (dam of Gr.2 winner Dreamworks).

Linda Duckworth spoke to Bluebloods and said “Fairview Park always sell well at Classic. It has been a great sale for us in the past. We have had a lot of success with Magic Albert and have two on offer including a real standout type.

“Other highlights are definitely the four by Hinchinbrook. He is a sire on the rise and in great demand.”

Fairview Park Stud’s 2016 Inglis Classic draft has 16 yearlings including four by promising young sire Hinchinbrook – sire of Gr.1 winner Press Statement. Lot 94 is the first foal, a filly, from winning mare Magita (Magic Albert) from the family of Shamus Award (Snitzel). Lot 355 is a filly from 13 race winner Wreckage (Zeditave) who has already left six winners including Feline Flyer (Catbird) who ran fourth in the Gr.3 Gold Coast Guineas. Lot 403 is a filly from winning mare Balwearie (King’s Best) whose first two foals are already winners and who descends from the Golden Slipper winner Storm Queen (Coronation Boy). The only colt by Hinchinbrook is Lot 425 from Blue Mink (Quest for Fame) who is the dam of five winners and a daughter of stakes winner Motown Blue (Bluebird).

We have had a lot of success with Magic Albert and have two on offer including a real standout type.

The majority of this draft are by proven sires such as Bernardini who has Lot 298, a filly from winning mare Switmoa (Snitzel), who is a half-sister to Savoureux (Nadeem). Charge Forward has Lot 360, a colt from winning mare Zafaaf (Flying Spur) who is from the family of Champion 2YO Filly in France, Gr.1 winner Loving Claim (Hansel). Lot 397 is a filly by recent Australian Racing Hall of Fame inductee Choisir from city winner Ausbred Rose (Hussonet) who is a half-sister to the dam of tough Gr.3 winner Daytona Grey (Artie Schiller).

A pair of yearlings by proven sire Magic Albert include a filly, Lot 40, out of Kianben (Jan Murray) who won five races, is a full sister to stakes winner Nan Tien and has left three winners of 14 races to date. The other is a colt, Lot 112 from speedy winning mare Miskish (Fastnet Rock) who is also a halfsister to stakes winner Nan Tien (Jan Murray).

These two yearlings are from the family of Gr.2 winner of 12 races Rain Affair (Commands) and several other good stakes horses.

A filly by Manhattan Rain is Lot 458, and is from winning mare Choisie (Choisir) who is a

half-sister to Ain’t Seen Nothin’ (Nothin’ Leica Dane), the dam of Champion 3YO in Singapore Stepitup and two other stakes winners. Debut draft has four of the best Located on the outskirts of Sydney at The Oaks, Jazcom Thoroughbreds will present their debut draft of yearlings at the 2016 Classic Sale.

J

azcom is owned and operated by Colin and Meagan Branthwaite, whose initials along with their children make up the name. The property has been developed over time, primarily as an agistment property and Jazcom has the support of many long term clients who include several high profile trainers and owners. The farm boasts undulating hills with large paddocks, the farm is well set up for raising young horses and Jazcom felt it was time to extend their services into yearling preparation.

Meagan Branthwaite spoke to Bluebloods and said “Our farm is located in a quiet and calm environment and our horses enjoy the serenity. Colin has many years of experience in the racing industry including training, breeding and sales preparation. We are extremely pleased with the draft that we are offering and are excited about the prospects of this experience. We are proud to be part of the Inglis Classic Yearling sale in 2016.”

Jazcom will bring four yearlings to the 2016 sale consisting of three fillies and one colt.

The colt is Lot 47, by Star Witness from stakes placed La Belle Chataigne (Catbird). This is her third foal and her first foal, a three year-old Gleams (Northern Meteor) has trialled recently.

Paree (Sovereign Red), dam of three stakes placed horses and this is the good tough family with several multiple race winners including Juggling Time (Jugah), a stakes winner of 15 races. Branthwaite says “He is an athletic racy type of colt who should get up and get running early. He is very well balanced and sure on his feet, a real trainer’s horse.”

Foxwedge has people talking and Lot 128 is a filly from group placed Moonboat Also by Star Witness, who has already left three stakes winners in his first crop of two year-olds, is Lot 218, a filly out of stakes placed Rosa Delago (Testa Rossa). Rosa Delago was precocious, winning as a 2YO as well as placing in the Listed WATC Raconteur Stakes. This filly is her second foal and she is from the family of Gr.2 Todman Slipper Trial winner and Gr.1 placed Royal Courtship (Royal Academy) and 16 race Gr.3 winner

Branthwaite says “This filly is a very racy sprinting type, who has a very powerful hind quarter and good balance.”

Foxwedge has people talking and Lot 128 is a filly from group placed Moonboat (Encosta de Lago) who is a half-sister to two group placed horses. Moonboat’s daughter Aghna, a full sister to this filly, debuted just recently coming third in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic at Wyong, making her the first stakes placegetter for Foxwedge.

This filly is from the family of Gr.1 winners Canny Lad, Canny Lass, Camarena, Camarilla, Guelph and promising young sire and Golden Slipper winner Sepoy. Branthwaite says “She is a very strong imposing filly, who has great bone and strength all over. A filly with a great attitude who should also get up and running early.”

The Jazcom draft will open with Lot 5, a filly

by Helmet from winning mare Hella Good (Thorn Park) who is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Triple Honour (Honours List). Hella Good has left a winner in Singapore, and this family also includes Gr.2 winner San Pauli Girl (Western Symphony). Branthwaite says “This filly has plenty of scope and range, she will be a tall filly that will cover a lot of ground.”

A long history of Classic success Manx Park bring another strong draft to Inglis Classic with 11 well-bred yearlings to entice buyers.

M

anx Park is situated in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales – a region known for its fertile soils and good rainfall. The farm was purchased by Richard Turnley after Tierce won the 1991 Golden Slipper. Richard bred and raced the chestnut son of Manx Park (IRE) and named the property after her.

Peta Tilden has managed the property for current owner Peter O’Shea since 2004 and before that managed Manx Park for original owner Richard. During this time Manx Park has built up a solid reputation as a breeder of high quality horses and if you look through the records you can quickly see that not only do they produce winners but they offer value.

We recently caught up with Peta to discuss Manx Park’s draft being prepared for the 2016 Inglis Classic Sale.

Q. How long have you been selling at the Inglis Classic Sale?

A. Manx Park has been selling at Inglis since its inception about 18 years ago. I’ve been selling yearlings for over 25 years.

Q. What are some of the best horses to come off Manx Park?

A. Racing to Win was sold to John O’Shea for just $40,000 and went on to win five Gr.1 races and over $3.5million in stakes and four-times Gr.1 winner and Champion 3yo filly Streama was reared at Manx Park – she was bred by the Coghlans across the road. Guy Walter inspected her in our paddock. Thanksgiving (by Stratum) has been a great advertisment in Hong Kong, winning over $700,000. We’ve also bred many handy city class horses and stakes performers with several of them sold at the Inglis Classic Sale.

Sunset Rock (by Domesday) was a $32,000 purchase for Lloyd Kennewell and won the Cinderella Stakes-LR, Hour of Peril won connections over $250,000 after being purchased for just $42,000 at the Classic Sale and Miss Solis (by Oratorio) was a stakes winner and Gr.2 place-getter in Western Australia where she earnt her owners $284,000 in prizemoney after being sold at the Classic Sale for just $32,000.

Q. What can you tell us about your draft?

Racing to Win was sold to John O’Shea for just $40,000 and went on to win five Gr.1 races and over $3.5million in stakes Other promising horses bred by Manx Park include I Am Invincible gelding Tudor Bolt, who from 11 starts so far has saluted four times and been out of the money just once; Queen of Wands - a promising Not A Single Doubt filly who raced without luck in the recent Spring Carnival 3yo fillies races in Sydney and Melbourne; Mr One Eleven (by Shaft) – a winner of five races and just under $200,000 for John Sargent and connections; and Hong Kong horse Team Fortune (by I Am Invincible) who won his first two starts before running on International Day recently without any luck.

A. We have a good mix of colts and fillies including two by leading sire I Am Invincible, two colts by exciting first season sire Uncle Mo and two colts by California Dane. Other sires represented in our draft are Al Maher, Dream Ahead, Wanted, Snippetson, and Lope de Vega.

Lot 84 by I Am Invincible is a nice type of filly and has a full-brother in Hong Kong who won his first two starts over there before an unlucky run on Hong Kong International Day recently. The Lope de Vega filly (Lot 129) out of Redoute’s Choice mare Moore is a big, precocious filly who stands up to make sure people know she’s there. And our Dream Ahead colt (Lot 157 is an excellent walker and really nice type of horse. Lot 534 is also a lovely horse and a great walker. He’s out of a good family and is quite flashy.

Q. Who is your pick for the Freshman Sire?

Delago Deluxe. He’s a really nice horse and he’s got great foals. We’re looking forward to watching them develop.

A. We commence the yearling preparations in the first week of November. They spend a lot of time in their paddocks. We let them out at 6:30 in the morning before returning them to the stables at 9:30 for breakfast. They then go out in the afternoon again for an hour. We don’t exercise them too much. They hoon about in the paddock, eat the grass, lie about and naturally keep active.

A reputation for selling success Middlebrook Valley Lodge continues to sell good horses, and recent graduates include Gr.2 winner Military Rose (General Nediym) and Gr.3 winner Big Money (Choisir).

rom their 2014 Inglis Classic draft, Middlebrook Valley Lodge sold an I Am Invincible colt for $100,000 to Murray Livestock who named him Ideal Express. Already this colt has black type, placing in the Listed Inglis 2YO Classic over 1200m as a February two year-old.

Other recent graduates from the farm include winners Surfin’ Safari, Kimberley Star, Sure and Fast, Rom Baro, Jacquinot Bay, Terror Force and The Huntress as well as South African 2yo Gr.1 winner Harry’s Son. Verna Metcalfe told Bluebloods “We have had a very busy year at Middlebrook Valley Lodge. We foaled down 115 mares for clients and our fertility rates were very high. Now we are into sales preparation and I am really pleased with our Classic draft. They are an excellent bunch of horses, and there is a horse to suit every buyer. The I Am Invincible fillies are all workman like types who will make solid racehorses, while the two Not a Single Doubt yearlings are real standout types.”

In 2016, Middlebrook Valley Lodge will present 16 yearlings at Inglis Classic and there are many interesting opportunities among them. Three are fillies by proven sire I Am Invincible, led by Lot 66 out of winning mare Light Waves (Way of Light) whose first foal is a winner and is from the family of Gr.1 winner Doctor Doom. Lot 260 is the second foal of winning mare Sister Samantha (Encosta de Lago) who is out of Gr.1 placed Calm Smytzer (Zabeel). Lot 288 is out of winning mare Strawberry Sky (Hurricane Sky) and who is a half-sister to stakes winner Riocetto (Oratorio).

Proven sire Not a Single Doubt has two yearlings here, Lot 363 is the first foal, a colt, from Zanus (Hussonet) who is a half-sister to tough dual Gr.1 winner Sirmione (Encosta de Lago). The other has good residual value as a half sister to two year-old stakes winner Terror Force (Al Maher) and is out of winning mare Angel’s Breath (Tale of the Cat).

A dozen quality offerings The Hunter Valley operation is bringing a strong draft of 12 yearlings to the Inglis Classic.

R

iversdale Farm is a family owned and operated thoroughbred stud in the Hunter Valley. Founded by Peter and Alison Hodge more than thirty years ago, the stud today is managed by their son Nick.

The farm is presenting twelve athletic yearlings at the Inglis Classic Sale in February.

Their draft includes a good mix of fillies and colts by proven sires such as Sebring, Stratum, Denman and Casino Prince as well by up-andcoming sires such as Smart Missile, Reward for Effort and Your Song.

We recently spent some time with Nick Hodges to discuss their Inglis Classic draft.

Q. What are some of your leading graduates from the farm?

A. From the past couple of years we’ve sold stakes performers such as Longeron, Miss Idyllic, Black Jag and Claudia Jean. Longeron (by Lonhro) recently led all the way to win at Flemington where the fourth-placed horse was his older half-brother Black Jag (by Excites).

Q. When do you begin your sale preparation? What methods do you use?

A. We commence the yearlings’ nine week preparation at the start of December. They’re stabled of an evening and during the day they spend lots of quality time in day paddocks where they can be horses. It’s important not to push their young bodies too hard.

Their draft includes a good mix of fillies and colts by proven sires such as Sebring, Stratum, Denman and Casino Prince Q. What are some of the top lots in your draft?

We have five fillies, the first of which is our lovely Smart Missile filly (Lot 138) who is very correct and a real jump and run type.

Our Sebring filly (lot 184) is very much in the mould of her sire. She’s out of a Starcraft mare who is a half-sister to Collate – sire of recent stakes winner Sold For Song.

Lot 271 is a gorgeous filly by the in-form Nicconi. Out of Umatilla (NZ) mare Soweta, who is a half-sister to two stakes winners, this filly is a great walker and a real standout on type. A big filly with a strong hind quarter, Lot 429 is our next filly being offered. She’s

by Star Witness who is currently the Leading Second Season Sire (by winners) and is out of Filante mare Boo Hoo – a sister to Thousand Guineas-Gr.1 winner Macedon Lady.

The last of our fillies is Lot 459, a lovely big horse out of a winning Redoute’s Choice mare and by the in-form Reward For Effort, who is Top 3 in the Second Season Sire standings by winners and prizemoney.

Of the colts we again have a good mix of yearlings on offer. Lot 180 by Denman is a forward, good-boned colt, as is our Monaco Consul colt out of Commands mare Yaourt (Lot 357).

Lot 330 is a good looking colt out of fourtimes winning Umatilla (NZ) mare Umatilly.

The mare’s first three to race are all winners and her fourth starter ran second on debut as a two-year-old in December. Our colt by Your

Song out of Weesmallhours (NZ) (By Carnegie (IRE)) is very correct and another very much like his sire.

We have a few Your Song yearlings and they’re all great types. A son of Lope de Vega, Lot 389 is a lovely type who moves well. The final pair of colts we’re offering are Lots 473 and 479 –quality yearlings by Casino Prince and Trusting out of city-winning mares.

Q. What are your freshman sire picks?

The two obvious picks are Pierro and All Too Hard, but Your Song has some great types and will be well-received. Excelebration (by Exceed and Excel) could be a surprise packet.

Exceed And Excel passes on all of his potent genes as a broodmare sire and everything he touches goes well. So you’d have to consider anything to do with him.

2016 SYDNEY CLASSIC YEARLING SALE Vendors

A Classic success Sledmere Stud is ready to continue its history of selling winners through Inglis Classic.

T

op class racehorses which have been reared at Scone’s Sledmere Stud since the late Ann Raymond established the famous thoroughbred nursery in 1977, include 2015 Gr.1 Myer Classic winner Politeness, Group 3 winner Star Alight, Queensland Derby and VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Valance, multiple Group 2 winner Gold Brose and Cryptic Verse who established herself as a foundation mare for the farm with all eight of her foals being winners, including Dyslexia, Bewilder, Cryptique and Lyrics.

Perhaps the most relevant mare (listed above) in this story however, is Lyrics, because she is responsible for producing one of Sledmere’s best graduates from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale; Group and multiple city winning mare Pane In The Glass.

The talented daughter of Testa Rossa was sold as a yearling for $36,000, amassed nearly $700,000 in racetrack earnings before being sold as a broodmare to Newgate Farm for $600,000. Her career highlight included four city wins, a victory in the Group 3 Silver Shadow and runner up in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes to Helmet.

“She was a huge success story and it goes to show that while everyone aims to get the best price in the sales ring, you can still pick up an above average racehorse at Classic without spending six figures,” explained Catriona Murphy, niece of Raymond, who now manages Sledmere Stud with husband Royston.

“We always take good physical types with good bone, temperaments and who are overall athletic horses.”

Other success stories to have come through the Sledmere draft at Classic include:

Lot 400 colt by Love Conquers All x Automatic Slim - Very nice individual whose pedigree is filled with two-year-old performers. He has a good depth of girth, and a lovely loose walk with very good follow through.

Lot 362 colt by Written Tycoon x Zals Extremely classy with loads of quality and will tick a lot of boxes for everyone. He has a brilliant action, a most lovely temperament, good eye and a fantastic hindquarter.

Lot 11 filly by Denman x Hollywell - Very nice, sharp looking filly with the pedigree to match.

She has a good action, good scope and bone.

“You can buy a very nice yearling for not a lot of spend and a good racetrack earn and we’re proud of our results here so far.”

Redeem Bounty (Nadeem x Sparkling Bounty) $10,000 to R Jolly – won 6 from 24 (10 placings) and $139,170

Sledmere are also offering progeny by Per Incanto, a sire that topped the Classic sale last year ($310,000) with a colt out of Da Vinci Code (Danasinga), now named Fibonacci who’s since shown promise by winning a maiden trial, placing third on an unsuitable heavy track and then fifth in a Listed Stakes race at Wellington during his first campaign.

“Little Avondale are keen to see the success of their leading second season sire and leading 2YO sire on individual winners translate to Australian shores, so we think this select group will appeal to the market,” said Murphy.

Classic case of Vinery value As the 2016 yearling sales circuit heats up, farms are putting the final touches on their Inglis Classic yearlings and Vinery Stud, who are offering more than 20 youngsters by 11 different stallions, can’t wait to get the show on the road.

F

or many, this time of year is both exciting and vulnerable, akin to perhaps preparing your first child for kindergarten. Once the foals are born, farms work hard to let them grow out in safe and environmentally rich surrounding, which sees them thrive in their yearling preparation and education process.

Vinery Stud’s Conor Phelan is particularly excited for that very reason and believes the sales offers excellent value and yearlings who are good on type.

“Getting your yearlings to the sales in top condition is the exciting part because there’s been so much ground work put in to them.

That in itself is an achievement. The rest is dictated to by market trends, a good buying bench and luck,” explained Phelan.

“We’ve always had good success selling at Classic and out of the Newmarket sales complex in general.”

So successful in fact that Inglis will be putting up two new etched gold plates in Vinery’s stable aisle with 2015 Group 1 winners Delectation and Entisaar (More Than Ready’s Champion 2YO in South Africa) both claiming elite races from those boxes after being born, reared and prepped at Vinery.

“Myboycharlie’s first Group 1 winner Peggy Jean was sold at Classic for $46,000 and she retired to the breeding barn with plenty of black type and more than $900,000 in prizemoney. The sale has proven year after year to be of great value.”

Lot 261 colt by More Than Ready x Skating On Ice A great More Than Ready colt out of the speedy black type mare Skating On Ice. This is her first foal and she has done a really good job; a lovely moving colt.

Lot 452 filly by Congrats x Champagne Run The Congrats x More Than Ready cross is shaping up to be exceptional and a filly from the Bollinger family will always be popular, and this filly is no exception.

Lot 512 colt by Pluck x Dream Leica We’ve had a fair bit of interest in this colt on the Stud. A steel grey from the family of Light Fantastic, this colt has started his preparation exceptionally well and is very much like his sire.

Lot 516 filly by All Too Hard x Dubleanny The size and scope exciting first season sire All Too Hard adds to his stock favoured the multiple Stakes winning mare Dubleanny and the result is a lovely filly that should be on every serious buyer’s short list.

All Too Hard was a sale topping yearling and a brilliant two-year-old, winning three Stakes races and getting second in his only other start, the Group 1 Champagne Stakes.

He went on to be the dominant three-year-old of his year taking Australia’s Champion 3YO title and only being outpointed by his famous half-sister Black Caviar in Australian Horse of the Year honours.

When it comes to first season sires, the aim is to take them to as many quality bloodstock sales as possible and with 40+ yearlings by All Too Hard being accepted by Inglis to the Easter sale, we need to spread them around.

Growing exceptional horses Wahha Thoroughbreds will present their debut draft of yearlings at the 2016 Inglis Classic Sale and Bluebloods spoke to owner Andrew Phillips about the farm.

“M

y family ran a boutique stud on the property when I was a child and I grew up with horses.

We mainly bred middle distance horses which were unpopular at the sales, and the family made the financial decision to move away from breeding around 30 years ago. We continued to use the farm to spell horses for clients, and have been building up a client base for breeders and racehorse owners.

The spelling property is called Lee Carrow Farm and is based about four hours north of Scone.”

Q. What advantages does the property have in that location?

A. “Being close to the Queensland border means that our winters are not as harsh as in the Hunter Valley. Many horses travel north to the Brisbane carnival, and then stay north to spell in the warmer weather. We also have that climate advantage. Our slight separation from the breeding hub does give us the advantage if any diseases are prevalent. The air is clean, the water pure and the paddocks sizes allow the roaming and exploration that is so important in the development of a healthy equine. We have a lower cost base so the property is very suitable for long term agistment. As racehorse owners ourselves, we understand the cost pressures and as well as lower daily rates, we offer a transport subsidy to help clients. The land itself is perfect horse country and young horses here grow well with great bone.”

Q. What made you get back into the sales side of the business?

A. “I was raised in the game, but my children have only had a smaller exposure to the whole racing business. We often speak to them about the history of the farm, but they haven’t really experienced it. This opportunity provides a connection for the children to experience both their own future and the farm’s past. I also miss the buzz that the industry provides, the excitement of the possibilities is addictive.

business. We have all the skills and experience, already catering to clients doing spelling and breaking in, so sales preparation is a natural step for the business.”

Q. What is your approach to selecting sires and planning matings for your mares?

A. “Actually all these three yearlings were pinhooked as weanlings. The first thing we looked for was pedigree as that provides the advertisement for the horse. After that, I inspected about 300 weanlings, firstly looking at temperament. As a horse trainer, I want to select horses that will work with a trainer and so I look for a nice soft eye. After that, I look at the individual’s body shape and design. A horse needs to be an athlete, and after that I look at correctness which is important if you are on-selling a horse and for their soundness.

After looking over so many weanlings, I narrowed down to several, and these three were affordable.”

We have all the skills and experience, already catering to clients doing spelling and breaking in, so sales preparation is a natural step for the business.

Lot 139, a colt by Hinchinbrook, is from New Edition (Stormy Atlantic), a stakes winning American mare whose first two foals are both winners overseas. Phillips said “He has a beautiful nature, nothing bothers him, and he is a great doer with a big appetite. There’ll never be an issue travelling this horse, he has a strong constitution. As for type, he is very strong with a lovely structure.”

Lot 257, a colt by Foxwedge, is out of Silvercup Baby (American Chance), a dual Listed winning mare whose first foal has won three races. Phillips said “This colt is the joker of the pack, he has loads of character. He has a lovely sprinting body, with a good rump, nice shoulder, and is very strong.”

Lot 269, a colt by So You Think, out of Soft Landing (Al Maher) who boasts Gr.1 winners Universal Prince (Scenic) and Universal Queen (Scenic) as her half siblings. Phillips said “He is just magic to watch in the paddock, he commands attention and makes me want to buy more So You Thinks. A wonderful individual with a classic body type, nice length of rein, lovely wither, and good girth.”

A. “We put them through an eight week process that includes spending their weekends in big paddocks so they have the opportunity to grow naturally. Bonifacio wins the Daisycutter Handicap at Del Mar

A trio of talent

Waratah Thoroughbreds will present their debut draft of three yearlings at the 2016 Inglis Classic.

T

heir three lots are led by Lot 428, a colt by Hard Spun from Bonifacio (Even the Score) who is an American stakes winning mare over 1000m and 1200m. She is a half-sister to two group winners; Gr.2 Saratoga Special Stakes winner Kantharos (Lion Heart) and Gr.3 winner Ikigai (Whywhywhy). This colt is her third foal.

Lot 254 is a colt by Black Caviar’s sire Bel Esprit from Sienna Red (Testa Rossa), who is a young mare that won three races including a city event as a two year-old. This is a precocious family that includes Gr.1 Golden Slipper winner Prowl (Marauding) and Listed Inglis 2YO Premier winner Stoker (Written Tycoon).

Their other entry is Lot 549, a colt by hot freshman sire Pierro, and the first foal of winning mare Floor Show (Stravinsky) who is a half-sister to two stakes horses. This is the family of Gr.1 winner Alberto Giacometti (Sadler’s Wells) who is a half-brother to this yearling’s second dam.

Bluebloods spoke to manager Julie Renton about their debut draft.

Q. What are some of your leading graduates from the Classic sale?

A. It’s our first time selling at the Classic sale, and after seeing the good results over the past couple of years, we felt it was time to put some nice yearlings into the sale.

Q. What is your approach to selecting sires and planning matings for your mares?

A. At Waratah it’s a team effort selecting our matings. There is a small group of us that research each mare and put our ideas forward.

At the end of this process we usually have it down to two sires for each mare. The final decision is then made by (owner) Mr Fudge.

Q. When do you begin your sale preparation?

A. We started in mid-November.

Q. What methods do you use?

A. We don’t like to rush our yearlings – we like to try to keep their preparation as natural

as possible. Each yearling goes out into a grass paddock at night and into the stables first thing in the morning. They get hand walked and groomed each day. Every Monday they get weighed as this helps us to gauge their growth patterns and we can adjust their feed accordingly. We like to present an athletic horse not yearlings that are overdone.

Q. What are your freshman sire picks?

“After seeing the good results over the past couple of years, we felt it was time to put some nice yearlings into the sale.”

A. There are some great restaurants in Coogee and you always seem to catch up with others in the industry down there.

A. There are some good first season sires out there and like all stud masters I’m excited to see what Pierro and All Too Hard yearlings will do on the race track. They were both champions on the track and I’m sure they will produce horses that will do the same.

Q. When in Sydney where do you go to relax, dine out, after a day at the sales?

A. We only have three lots but our pick would be Lot 428 a colt by Hard Spun out of Bonifacio. He is a lovely athletic colt with a good shoulder and hip and he’s a great walker.

NZ farm is coming to Sydney Successful Gr.1 vendor Wentwood Grange is offering its first draft at Classic.

W

entwood Grange are a NZ based farm that had great results at The Championships last autumn, having sold Gr.1 winners Kermadec (Teofilo), Gust of Wind (Darci Brahma) and group winners Tremec (Zabeel) and Intimate Moment (Dubawi), who all performed during the carnival. Because of this success, Wentwood Grange want to brand themselves in Australia and will present their debut draft at 2016 Inglis Classic Sale. Bluebloods spoke to General Manager Dean Hawkins who said “We previously sold yearlings in Australia via Broadwater, who have done a wonderful job for us. Our success at The Championships is an opportunity to bounce off that and start selling under our own name as proven vendors of Gr.1 winners in Australia.”

Wentwood Grange will bring seven yearlings to Classic, and selected them all to appeal to the Australian buyer as generally precocious types with pedigrees that have an Australian flavour.

By Commands, Lot 7 is a filly from High Joy (High Chaparral) who is a half-sister to Listed STC Premier’s Cup winner Emperor Bonaparte (Montjeu), from the family of the winner of “the race of the century” Bonecrusher (PagAsa). Hawkins said “Commands is a great Australian stallion and this filly is an up and running type.”

Lot 69 is a filly by Pour Moi, whose oldest NZ progeny are two year-olds, and is out of Limpopo (Exceed and Excel). Limpopo’s dam ran fourth in the Gr.1 NZ Oaks, and is a halfsister to group winner Leigh Valley (Bianconi).

Hawkins said “This filly is very typical of her damsire Exceed and Excel and as such should suit the Australian market.”

By Pins, Lot 71, is the first foal, a filly, from Lithograph (Echo of Light). Lithograph is an American daughter of Listed winner and Gr.1 placed Australian trained mare Forum Floozie (Danasinga), who has left a stakes winner in France. This is the family of international galloper and sire Starcraft (Soviet Star).

Hawkins said “By Pins, a stallion that has done great things in Australia, and from a family that has also raced well there. This is a tall leggy filly with lots of scope.”

Lot 93, by Denman is a filly from Magic Star (Danzero) making this yearling a half-sister to the Listed winner Miss Upstart (Snippetson) who sadly died before fulfilling her promise.

Hawkins said “An early type of filly, very strong and well placed in this sale.”

“Our success at The Championships is an opportunity to bounce off that and start selling under our own name as proven vendors of Gr.1 winners in Australia.”

The final three lots in the Wentwood Grange draft are the last three through the ring on day two of the sale. Hawkins said “When I opened the catalogue, I thought that we’d been given a real visitor’s draw!”

Lot 341 is by Queensland based sire Real Saga from Vinzky (Stravinsky), a winning mare who has left Sgp-3 Kranji Sprint winner El Milagro (Red Dazzler). This is the family of dual Gr.1 star Tristanagh (Sir Tristram).

Hawkins said “I wanted a couple of nice colts to complement the fillies in the draft. He is a big strong colt.”

Lot 342 is a filly by Makfi from Virginia Key (Mark of Esteem), dam of Australian based Gr.3 placed Kansas Sunflower (Mastercraftsman), who sold through this sale. This is a strong European family. Hawkins said “This filly is very typical of the sire, a classic type with a bit of leg. She is a later foal, but well grown.”

Well worth the wait, Lot 343 is the only Jimmy Choux in the sale. The colt from Voliera (Keeper) who is a young winning mare from a good NZ family that includes Gr.1 winner Recite (Darci Brahma). Hawkins said “There is a lot of talk around Jimmy Choux, and this colt’s half-sister won on debut by eight lengths recently. He is a very precocious type.”
