Kermadec (IRE) Spring is always a time of expectation and excitement for mare owners as the breeding season gets underway. The arrival of the first foals of the year and the decisions on the best mates for mares are annual preoccupations at this time. The newest crop of sires is always the subject of intense interest and 2016 will be no different as many of the best racehorses of recent times prepare to cover their first mares. Outstanding juveniles like Golden Slipper winner Vancouver and Blue Diamond winner Pride of Dubai, along with Press Statement, a Gr.1 winner at two and then a Caulfield Guineas victor at three, the Golden Rose winner Exosphere, outstanding older performer Criterion and tough-as-teak sprinter Trust in a Gust are among those heading to the breeding barn.

They will be joined by the likes of Kermadec, Panzer Division, Scissor Kick, Ready for Victory, Jabali, Nostradamus, Rich Enuff, Valentia, Headwater, Outreach and Bull Point among the locals going to stud. Shuttlers include the high profile Japanese import Real Impact, who also made his mark at Gr.1 level in Australia, brilliant US-bred and trained speed star No Nay Never, who broke the juvenile 1000m track record at Royal Ascot and then won the Prix Morny in France, Royal Ascot Gr.1 winner Free Eagle and English 2000 Guineas winner Night of Thunder. In fact breeders will be spoilt for choice with fee levels ranging from $7700 to $66,000 and we hope the stallion profiles, written by Bluebloods editor David Bay, in this special feature, will help with that allimportant decision, “who is the best mate for my mare in 2016?”

Real Impact displayed his ability early in the breeding and racing powerhouse of Japan. From three starts at two, he won sensationally on debut and was twice second in Group 1 and Group 2 company – beaten only by Japan’s Champion 2YO Colt Grand Prix Boss. At just his sixth race start Real Impact won the Tokyo Yasuda Kinen G1 over 1600 metres in a staggering 1:32 flat, the first three-year-old ever to win the race. The Yasuda Kinen is rated among the World’s Best Group One Races over the past three years, above the George Main, the Chipping Norton and the Doncaster.

He ended his 3YO season with a Timeform rating of 121, alongside Mongolian Khan, Preferment & Volkstok’n’barrell. Trainer Paul Messara says, “A very genuine racehorse with a fantastic temperament, he’s a beautiful horse to work with and was very unlucky not to win a Group One. “Scissor Kick is a strikingly attractive colt and was

always the pick of the mounting yard.” Scissor Kick brings exceptional genetics to the Arrowfield stallion barn, and not only as a son of dominant sire of sires Redoute’s Choice. He a grandson of Quest For Fame (also damsire of leading New Zealand sire Tavistock) and descends from a half-sister to the great broodmare Hasili, dam of champion sire Dansili & Group 1 winners Intercontinental, Cacique, Champs Elysees & Banks Hill – all by Danehill n

Awarded a Timeform rating of 124, Real Impact retired to stud as Deep Impact’s only multiple Group 1-winning son with $5.6 million prizemoney and is currently serving his first book of mares at Shadai. Real Impact’s dam Tokio Reality has also produced multiple stakeswinner & Group 1-placed I’ll Love Again and the Group 3-placed Neorealism. Damsire Meadowlake sired 54 stakeswinners including Champion US 2YO Filly Meadow Star. In January 2013 Beneteau, Arrowfield’s young homebred son of Redoute’s Choice died, leaving a total of 136 foals on the ground and in utero behind him. He also left a gap that has steadily enlarged, as those two crops have already produced 12 stakes performers, including Group winners Prompt Return, Almighty Girl and Puritan. The team at Arrowfield felt Beneteau’s loss deeply, but responded as horse breeders do, by setting out to replace him. They found not one, but two Redoute’s Choice colts at the Inglis Easter Sale and in the subsequent three years they have both risen to the challenge of filling Beneteau’s boots. Panzer Division (Redoute’s Chice-Desert Fight by Hussonet) progressed from an impressive debut 2YO win to Group 3 success over 1400m as a Spring 3YO, defeating subsequent Group 1 winner Shooting To Win. At only his fourth start he was fifth in the weight-for-age ATC George Main S. 1600m G1, won by Sacred Falls. That performance earned Panzer Division a Timeform rating of 120 and his Autumn prospects looked bright, but his career ended after only seven starts.

Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice-Back Pass by Quest For Fame)

Trainer Paul Messara says, “Panzer Division is close to the perfect thoroughbred horse on conformation and presence, he’s a stunning individual. “He also had a huge amount of ability and we had high aspirations for him, but his career was cut short by injury in the Hobartville Stakes.” Panzer Division is out of dual Group 1 winner Desert Fight, Champion 2YO Filly in Chile, by multiple champion sire Hussonet, also a leading broodmare sire of Blue Diamond G1 winner Extreme Choice (by Not A Single Doubt) and champion filly Majmu (by Redoute’s Choice). Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice-Back Pass by Quest For Fame) was also an impressive juvenile winner before a heady Spring campaign that established him among Australia’s best three-year-old colts. He won the ATC Rosebud H. 1200m LR before heading the closest of quinellas with Panzer Division in the ATC Up and Coming S. 1300m G3. The photo finish went against Scissor Kick at his fifth start, in the ATC Golden Rose S. 1400m G1, but jockey Tye Angland had no doubt about the quality of his widely admired second-placed effort, saying afterwards “He's a real fighter, best horse in the race.” Scissor Kick’s Autumn three-year-old campaign began with success in the ATC Eskimo Prince S. 1200m G3, beating subsequent Group 1 winner Delectation. He then joined Dissident, Wandjina & Chautauqua to complete the top four in the ATC All Aged S. G1 rated Australia’s best 1400-metre race over the past three years.

Star juveniles boost Coolmore roster in 2016 Pride of Dubai and Vancouver, the star juvenile colts of the 2014-15 Australian racing season, will stand at Coolmore, Jerrys Plains in 2016. The former is a son of champion Street Cry (IRE) and the latter a son of Medaglia d’Oro (USA) and both are from mares by breed-shaper Danehill (USA). Pride of Dubai will command a fee of $55,000 and Vancouver, who is still in training with Aidan O’Brien in Ireland and chasing further Gr.1 sprint glory in the UK before retirement in July, is on $66,000. They will be joined by shuttling newcomer No Nay Never (USA) (Scat Daddy), a winner of the Prix Morny-Gr.1, who is the subject of a separate story in this issue. They will be part of a 12-strong roster for the international breeding giant which will also welcome back sprint champion Starspangledbanner (Choisir), fee $24,750, who has stood in Victoria since making a return to stud duties in 2013 and shuttled to Ireland for the northern season in 2016.

[ PRIDE OF DUBAI ] Street Cry (IRE)-Al Anood by Danehill (USA)

Pride of Dubai was bred by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and raised at Coolmore where he was labelled “top pick of the paddock” by trainers Peter and Paul Snowden. The winner of two, and placed twice from five starts, he was the only dual Gr.1-winning juvenile colt last season. He came from well back to run third on debut at Rosehill (1100m) on December 20, 2014, after being ninth at the 400m, and was beaten a length behind Ottoman. He reappeared at Caulfield on February 14, 2015 in the colts’ division of the Blue Diamond Prelude-Gr.3 (1100m) and went down narrowly to the ill-fated Of The Brave after again coming from well back (10th at the 400m) in the field of 14. That eye-catching run tuned him up for the $1m Blue Diamond-Gr.1 (1200m) on February 28 and he won impressively from 100/1 shot Reemah and Lake Geneva in 1:10.53 (Caulfield track good), again coming from back in the field to storm home for jockey Damian Browne after being held up for a clear run in the straight. “If he had got beaten today it would have been a tragedy,” Peter Snowden said. “But to his credit he picked himself up off the canvas and has proved a worthy winner. His attitude is second to none, a little girl could ride him work, but he has so much to learn.” He did not race again until April 6 and faced another top class field of juveniles in the $1m Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.1 (1400m) at Randwick when racing for a new syndicate, which included his breeder, China Horse Club and Coolmore. He was much closer to the action this time on the soft (7) track although trapped wide, sitting second at the 400m for Hugh Bowman

[ FRESHMAN SIRES 2016 ] Street Cry’s Australian stars include Champion 3YO Whobegotyou (Carnegie), Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 and Australian Cup-Gr.1 winner Shocking (Danehill), now a promising sire based in NZ, and the current darling of the turf in Winx (Al Akbar), already the winner of 13, six at Gr.1, including the Cox Plate, Epsom Handicap and Doncaster Mile. Although the cross with Danehill line mares has proved fruitful including Shocking and Pride of Dubai (he also has a Gr.1 winner from a daughter of Redoute’s Choice) and $1m earner Solicit, his 18 Gr.1 winners are from mares from a variety of sire lines including Meadowlake, Eastern Echo, Night Shift, Clever Trick, Green Desert, Hero’s Honor, Dayjur, Doc’s Leader, Dixie Union and Summer Squall. The cross with Danehill, a horse inbred 3mx3f to Natalma, is an interesting one as Street Cry’s sire Machiavellian (Mr. Prospector-Coup de Folie by Halo) is from a mare inbred to this family. Coup de Folie has the half-sisters Cosmah (Cosmic Bomb) and Natalma (Native Dancer) 2x2 and her dam Raise the Standard, a half-sister to Northern Dancer, is by the Ribot-line horse Hoist the Flag, while Danehill’s dam Razyana is by the Ribot son His Majesty and from Natalma. Street Cry’s dam, the Irish Oaks winner Helen Street, is by the short-lived English Derby-Gr.1 winner Troy, a son of Petingo (Petition), a horse who has worked really well with Pride of Dubai’s family. Danehill’s sire Danzig is a son of Northern Dancer and Pas de Nom (Admiral’s Voyage), whose dam Petitioner is by Petition and from the 1946 English Oaks winner Steady Aim (Felstead). Pride of Dubai’s six generation pedigree reflects this with Natalma 5fx5m,5f and her dam Almahmoud 6f,6fx6f,6f and with Natalma’s sire (and Mr. Prospector’s grandsire) Native Dancer being 5m,6fx6f,6f. He also has Petition (5mx6f) and Hyperion (6mx6f,6m). Pride of Dubai’s dam, stakes placed Al Anood, won twice in the city at two at 1000m and 1400m and was Listed placed in South Australia at that age. She has had three foals to race, all winners, including Listed winner Al Aneed (More Than Ready) and Gr.3 fourth Enaad (High Chaparral). By Coolmore sire great Danehill, nine times Champion Sire in Australia, an outstanding sire of sires and broodmare sire, Al Anood is from the imported Eljazzi (IRE) (Artaius-Border Bounty by Bounteous), a half-sister to sires Valley Forge and Pitcairn (sire of Ela-Mana-Mou, broodmare sire of Equiano). Eljazzi won in England at two and her 10 winners include the French Oaks-Gr.1 heroine Rafha (Kris), dam of champion sprinter and sire Invincible Spirit (Green Desert), best known in this neck of the woods as the sire of Yarraman Park’s high profile sire I Am Invincible, whose daughters could prove an interesting cross with Pride of Dubai. Chiang Mai (Sadler’s Wells), a Gr.3-winning daughter of Eljazzi, is the dam of Gr.1 winner Chinese White (Dalakhani), while Eljaazi’s stakes placed daughter Fayfa (Slip Anchor) is the dam of Listed winner Hilfa (Danehill), herself dam of Listed winner Walk With Attitude (Hussonet). Next dam Border Bounty, by the Dewhurst StakesGr.1 winner and Rockefella son Bounteous, won four races (two at two) from 6f-2400m and was runner-up in the Yorkshire Oaks-Gr.1. Her nine winners included Gr.2 winner Valley Forge and Gr.3 winner Pitcairn, both by Petingo and both Gr.1 placed. Their sister Dingle Bay, a minor winner, produced the outstanding stayer Assessor (Niniski), whose eight wins included the Prix Royal Oak-Gr.1 and Prix du Cadran-Gr.1. This is family 7a and next dam is B Flat (Chanteur II-Ardeen by Ardan). Pride of Dubai’s 10th dam Modwena (Galopin) is a sister to the English Derby and St Leger winner Donovan and a half-sister to the 1000 Guineas winner Semolina (St Simon).

[ VANCOUVER ] Medaglia d’Oro (USA)-Skates by Danehill (USA) Winner of four of his five starts and $2.36m and rated Champion Two Year-Old Colt in Australia last season, Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro (USA)-Skates by Danehill (USA)) looks set to continue the successful tradition of Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winners at stud. He’s got pedigree to back up a superb race record too, being by an internationally successful grandson of Sadler’s Wells and from a mare who has left 10 winners from 10 foals to race, two of them Gr.1 winners, and is a daughter of a dual Gr.1 winner and outstanding broodmare in Skating. Bred by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds and purchased by Gai Waterhouse at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $185,000, Vancouver tuned up for the races with a trial win on the Kensington track on September 22, 2014 before lining up for the Breeders’ Plate-LR (1000m) at Randwick on October 4 and running home a handy winner (1.25 lengths) from Sooboog in a slick 57.58 after leading all the way. He wasn’t back at the races until January 31,

Waterhouse said. “It was absolutely scintillating the way he ate up his rivals here today and just look forward to him in the Slipper.” Vancouver was back at Rosehill on March 21 for the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 (1200m) and from the outside barrier (16) moved to midfield at the 800m and fifth 400m from home before landing the money from stable mate English, who challenged late, and Lake Geneva in 1:09.74. That win prompted the sale of a majority interest in the young stallion prospect (reportedly valuing him at $40m) to Coolmore and high profile partners including the China Horse Club, Ramsay Pastoral and Peters Investments. The Slipper win was Waterhouse’s sixth, matching the record of her father T.J. Smith in the event and provided jockey Tommy Berry with his second (after Overreach). “The barrier didn’t matter, good horses get themselves out of trouble,” Berry said. Vancouver won a trial at Randwick on July 31 before resuming as a three year-old in the San Domenico-Gr.3 (1100m) at Rosehill on August 15, finishing fourth of eight behind Japonisme (2.2 lengths). He trialled again on September 1 but that was to be his final appearance on an Australian track. He was sent to Ireland on February 17 this year and into the care of Coolmore trainer Aidan O’Brien who described him as “very exciting”. He will set the horse for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes-Gr.1 at the Royal Ascot carnival in June and then possibly the July Cup-Gr.1. Vancouver is “returning home” in a sense as his greatgrandsire Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer-Fairy Bridge

Vancouver’s sire Medaglia d’Oro (USA) (El PradoCappucino Bay by Bailjumper) was a top class performer in the US winning eight and placing second seven times in 17 starts in a career that also saw him fourth in a Kentucky Derby-Gr.1. He won the Travers Stakes-Gr.1 (10f), Whitney Handicap-Gr.1 (9f) and Donn Handicap-Gr.1 (9f) and placed second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (twice), Dubai World Cup, Belmont Stakes, Pacific Classic and Wood Memorial. His wins came from 1200m-2000m. He retired to stud in the US in 2005 (Australia 2010) and was an immediate success, his brilliant daughter Rachel Alexandra (Roar) becoming Horse of the Year in 2009. He now has 86 stakes winners world wide, a high 10.4% of starters and his 532 winners have won more than $86m. He has 68 winners (9SW) of $8.4m in Australia including Silver Slipper-Gr.2 winner Astern (Exceed and Excel), multiple Gr.3 winner Nostradamus (Lion Hunter), other Gr.3 winners Durandal (Blazing Sword), Tessera (Flying Spur), Shards (Lonhro) and Java (Fantastic Light), the last named also Gr.1 fourth. Warrior’s Reward shuttles to Spendthrift Farm, Victoria. Medaglia d’Oro’s dam Cappucino Bay, a Listed

winner, is a daughter of the Damascus son Bailjumper and the multiple US winner Dubbed In by Champion US 2YO Colt Silent Screen (Prince John), a successful sire. His sire El Prado (Sadler’s Wells-Lady Capulet by Sir Ivor), 1989-2009, won four of his nine starts including the National Stakes when racing for Robert Sangster in the yard of Vincent O’Brien and was Champion Irish 2YO in 1991. Against all odds he succeeded at stud in the US, becoming Champion Sire in 2002. Medaglia d’Oro (US fee $150,000) is currently 10th on the leading sires’ table in the US with earnings of $3.17m to May 12 while another El Prado son, Kitten’s Joy (ex Kitten’s First by Lear Fan), a Champion Turf Horse who earned $2m and is on a fee of $100,000, is 12th with earnings of $2.99m and has been the US Leading Turf Sire for the past four years. El Prado is also the sire of Breeders’ Cup Mile-Gr.1 winner and Emirates Park (Murrurundi) shuttler Artie Schiller (ex Hidden Light by Majestic Light), fee $22,000, who is enjoying a great season in 2015-16 with his juveniles including Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond placegetter Flying Artie, a Gr.3 winner. He also has Gr.2 winner Good Standing and talented filly If Not Now When among six juvenile winners who have earned $1.28m to have him fifth on the 2YO sires’ list (May 12). Vancouver’s dam Skates won in Melbourne at two when she was also three-times runner-up at Listed level. Her 10 named foals are all winners and also include the Robert Sangster Stakes-Gr.1 winner Juste Momente (Giant’s Causeway) and Listed winner Captain Coltish (Fusaichi Pegasus). By Gr.1 winner and champion sire Danehill, she is out of the exceptional race mare Skating, whose seven wins included the Doncaster Mile-Gr.1 and the Winfield Classic-Gr.1. Skating, a grey daughter of the Melbourne Cup winner At Talaq (USA) (Roberto) also proved an exceptional broodmare with 10 of her 11 named foals racing and winning including Gr.3 winner and Gr.1

placed Murtajill (Rock of Gibraltar), Listed winner and Gr.3 placed Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice), both sires, and Listed winner Sunset Run (End Sweep). A further four of her foals earned black type, Thegreatandthegood (Rock of Gibraltar), Dubai Ice (Danehill), Tordean (Naturalism) and Skates, while a placed daughter Zali (Danehill) is dam of Listed winner Zauberin (Zabeel). This is family 26 and Skating’s dam Raffett, a winner at 1200m and half-sister to Gr.2 winner and Caulfield Cup-Gr.1 runner-up Congressman (Ksar (FR)), is a daughter of brilliant miler Raffindale (GB), a grey son of Raffingora and Wharfdale (Wilwyn) whose Australian stakes wins included the 1977 Epsom Handicap-Gr.1. Raffett’s placed dam Approvetor (Approval (GB)Eloquent by Better Boy (IRE)), produced four winners and her dam Eloquent (ex Genvetor by Beau Cheval) won nine races from 1100m-1600m in Melbourne and five of her six foals won including Western Australian Oaks-Gr.1 winner Badinage (Estaminet (FR)). It is also the family of Creil (Frenchpark), winner of the Avondale Gold Cup-Gr.1. Vancouver’s eighth dam is the imported mare Beneficiary (GB). Born in 1926 she is a daughter of Happy Man from Document by Spearmint, the next dam Doctrine (Ayreshire-Axiom by Peter) won the Coronation Stakes and is closely related to St Leger winner and sire Solario (Gainsborough), while Axiom is a half-sister to a great Australian sire of the past in Bill of Portland (GB) (St Simon) and to No Trumps (second dam of Gloaming). Beneficiary founded a successful family in Australia, a daughter Mizar (Great Star) producing the Melbourne Cup winner Rimfire (Enfield (GB)), while her offspring Matinee, Gay Romance, Tustee and Codicil all won stakes. Vancouver’s seventh dam, Deserve, is closely related to Rimfire, being by Enfield and from Beneficiary. It’s a tough and sound family, something that’s sure to stand Vancouver in good stead.

American raider defeated best European juveniles In these days when racing has become a truly international sport it’s still rare for an American-trained juvenile to take on the best in Europe. Coolmore’s newest shuttler, No Nay Never (USA), not only took on the star two year-olds, but beat them easily in his two starts away from home to earn a Timeform of 118+, the sixth highest for a youngster in 2013.

[ NO NAY NEVER USA ] Scat Daddy-Cat’s Eye Witness by Elusive Quality (USA) Trained by Wesley Ward, who had also made a successful raid to Royal Ascot in 2009, No Nay Never arrived in Europe already a winner having scored over 900m on debut at Keeneland’s polytrack in April. The son of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg (USA)) and the Elusive Quality (USA) mare Cat’s Eye Witness, lined

up for the Norfolk Stakes-Gr.2 (1000m) at the Royal Ascot meeting and demolished a high–class field, beating the favourite Coach House by a length and with the filly Wind Fire a head back in third. The first three home all broke the juvenile track record (since the course was revamped in 2006), with the winner running 58.80. The trainer, who said he was “horrified” by the rain at Deauville eight weeks later and considered withdrawing No Nay Never from the Prix MornyGr.1 (1200m), although the going was no worse than good, nevertheless allowed his colt to start in a race that attracts some of the best two year-olds in training in Britain and France and in fact was won by No Nay Never’s unbeaten grandsire Johannesburg, who also won the Norfolk when he was the World Champion

2YO of 2001 (also won Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-Gr.1, Middle Park Stakes-Gr.1.) The colt also sported Sue Magnier’s colours for the first time, Coolmore and partners (including Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith) securing him after the Norfolk. The international conglomerate also stood his sire Scat Daddy, grandsire Johannesburg and greatgrandsire Hennessy (USA) (Storm Cat), the last two familiar to Australian breeders as they shuttled to Coolmore, Jerrys Plains. Jumping very well for David Flores, No Nay Never gave another dominant display in the Morny and had the race in his keeping when he went clear a furlong from home, winning by a length from unbeaten French filly and Prix Robert Papin-Gr.2 winner Vorda and with the Queen Mary winner Rizeena a further three-

It was a strong renewal of the feature as the placegetters went on the win the Cheveley Park-Gr.1 and Moyglare Stud Stakes-Gr.1 respectively and the fifth placed Brown Sugar won the Sirena Stakes next time out. A $US170,000 foal and then a $95,000 yearling (September) at Keeneland, Timeform reported No Nay Never “has the build and demeanour of a sprinter” in its assessment of the colt in racehorses of 2013. He certainly showed that aptitude in his three starts at three. He was second behind Spot in the Swale StakesGr.2 on dirt at Gulfstream Park on March 1, 2014 before a long break and then won the Woodford Stakes-Gr.3 on turf at Keeneland on October 4, running the 5.5f (1100m) in 1:03.59 after an early duel with Spring to the Sky (21.53; 44.40) and beating Mongol Bull by a half-length with Sharp Sensation third. “The turf course here is just so kind and forgiving. He’s a big, blocky, extremely fast horse,” Ward said after the Woodford. “Although he’s equally good on the dirt, I thought this would be a great spot to bring him back and springboard him into what we are going to do, which will most likely be the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.” Earlier Ward had waxed lyrical about the colt to a Blood-Horse reporter. “His physical make up is striking. It’s like the ultimate specimen of a horse,” he said. “He has a beautiful head, a beautiful shoulder. He has a beautiful hip on him, he’s pitch black and he’s gorgeous.” No Nay Never lined up in the field of 14 for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint-Gr.1 on November 11 and finished second to Bobby’s Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) with his stable mate Undrafted (Purim) third in a time of 1:12.73 for the 6.5f at Santa Anita Park. The winner, also three, who had never raced shorter than a mile, came from last to first to win by a half-length in a blanket finish after No Nay Never had looked the winner for most of the straight. Third placed Undrafted was a nose back and had a neck to spare on fourth-placed Ageless. The winner is campaigning in Europe in 2016 and won his first start there, the Listed Cork Stakes in Ireland on March 28. He was fourth in the BC Sprint in 2015 and will try likely again in 2016 No Nay Never was retired to Coolmore in Ireland after the Sprint for the 2015 stud season. His fee in 2016 at Jerrys Plains is $11,000. The purchase of No Nay Never proved a timely one for Coolmore as his very successful sire Scat Daddy (ex Love Style by Mr. Prospector), who stood at their Ashford Stud in Kentucky and shuttled to Chile, died at only 11 in December 2015. He’d already sired 69SW. A top class juvenile, he won the Sandford-Gr.2 and Champagne-Gr.1, he trained on at three to win the Fountain of Youth-Gr.2 and Florida Derby-Gr.1 and retired with five wins in nine starts and earnings of $US1.33m, after an unplaced effort in the Kentucky

Free Eagle a coup for Cornerstone Cornerstone Stud is making quite a mark on the Australian breeding scene though the importation of high-class shuttlers like Dalakhani (IRE) and Zebedee (GB), both already stud successes in Europe before coming to SA. This year Sam Hayes is banking on another Gr.1 European performer in Free Eagle (IRE) and a speedy Australian two year-old in Valentia to entice breeders. With Dalakhani resting this year, Free Eagle (High Chaparral (IRE)-Polished Gem by Danehill (USA)) looks an inspired choice as he was rated the JointChampion Older Horse in Europe and Ireland (Intermediate) in 2015 after winning the Royal Ascot Prince of Wales’s Stakes-Gr.1 (10f) from The Grey Gatsby and Western Hymn for owner Moyglare Stud Farms Ltd and trainer Dermot Weld. Valentia (Fastnet Rock-Smart Company by Mister C (USA)) holds plenty of appeal as well. He’s a son of a dual Australian Champion Sire and now sire of sires in Fastnet Rock and his winning dam is a sister to dual Gr.1 winner Super Elegant. It’s the family of Razor Sharp and Steel Blade that has done such sterling service for Fred Peisah at his Lomar Park Stud on the outskirts of Sydney and Valentia had plenty of ability, winning the Skyline Stakes-Gr.2 at two.

Free Eagle, whose fee is $18,700, showed talent from day one and made his debut on August 15, 2013 in a 10-runner juvenile maiden (8f) at Leopardstown. He was very impressive in demolishing the opposition and left runner-up Orchestra 5.5 lengths in his wake on a good to firm surface he clearly appreciated. He was runner-up to subsequent classic winner Australia in his only other juvenile outing, the Golden Fleece Stakes-Gr.3 (8f) at Leopardstown on September 7. His efforts prompted the Timeform experts to award him a rating of 103p and comment, “he remains a smart prospect”. Very much regarded as the stable’s “star player” at three by Weld, the young horse’s season was curtailed when he suffered a stress fracture of the Tibia in early April 2014 and was confined to his box for 12 weeks. He made a triumphant return to the track in September when he won the Kilternan (Enterprise) Stakes-Gr.3 (10f) at Leopardstown by seven lengths from Elleval in a time faster than The French Derby winner The Grey Gatsby’s victory in the Irish Champion Stakes-Gr.1 later on the program. That win prompted jockey Pat Smullen to say, “I genuinely think that Free Eagle is the best horse I have ever ridden.” “Free Eagle looked a colt right out of the top drawer, one who could certainly have made a worthy opponent

He covered further books of 187,158, 178 and 147 (at $60,500) before his death in late December 2014. It’s hardly surprising he was so well supported by Australian breeders as his NZ crops proved a revelation and included the likes of international champion So You Think (Tights), 14 wins and $8.89m in Australia, England and Ireland and now on the roster at Coolmore, Dundeel (Zabeel), 10 wins and $5.3m and now on the roster at Arrowfield, and other Gr.1 winners like Monoco Consul (Star Way), showing promise as a sire and at Kingstar Farm in 2016, Shoot Out (Pentire) and Descarado (Lord Ballina). His imported son Contributor (GB) (Exit to Nowhere) scored twice at Gr.1 level here for Darley and begins his stud career in NZ in 2016, while Swettenham shuttled another northern bred Gr.1 winner Toronado (Grand Slam), a Champion Miler in Europe, from 2015. Arion Pedigrees credits High Chaparral with 780 winners (59.1%) of more than $90m to May 19 and his 78 stakes winners represent 5.9% of starters. He was the Leading NZ Sire (Australia-NZ combined) in 2010-11 and his stock have a winning distance index of 1967m. He has other Gr.1 winners from daughters of Woodman, Theatrical (giving inbreeding to threequarter brother Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev, as does the cross with Zabeel daughters used in Gr.1 winners Dundeel and Fenway), Big Shuffle, Surumu, Danske and Green Desert. High Chaparral’s sire Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer-Fairy Bridge by Bold Reason) was a 14-time Champion Sire in Great Britain and Ireland, while his dam Kasora is by French Derby winner Darshaan (by Shirley Heights by Mill Reef), a particularly successful cross with the Sadler’s Wells line. Next dam is the French Gr.2 winner Kozana, a daughter of champion sire Kris (Sharpen Up). Free Eagle’s dam Polished Gem (Danehill) is from one of the successful Moyglare Stud families, founded in the mid-1970s when Walter Haefner purchased her second dam Talking Picture (Speak John-Poster Girl by Nasrullah) after her racing career. She was the leading US juvenile filly of her year and bred 11 winners for the stud including the Irish 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 winner Trusted Partner (by the 1978 US Triple Crown Winner Affirmed), second dam of Free Eagle. Trusted Partner also produced 11 winners, most notably the English Gr.2 winner Dress to Thrill, who travelled to the US to claim the Matriarch Stakes-Gr.1 at Hollywood Park. She is a sister to Polished Gem who won at race at two at Leopardstown and whose four winners also include Custom Cut (Notnowcato), a multiple Gr.2 winner who was Joint-Champion Older Male Miler in Ireland in 2015 (12 wins 7f-9f), and Sapphire (Medicean), a Gr.2 winner of six races and Champion Older Female (long) in Ireland in 2012. She was also runner-up in the Pretty Polly Stakes-Gr.1 at the Curragh, her six wins coming from 8f-12f. This is family 9f and Free Eagle’s fourth dam Poster Girl is from Banta (by the Fair Play grandson Some Chance), a stakes winning daughter of a terrific US broodmare in Bourtai (Stimulus-Escutcheon). A stakes placed winner at two, Bourtai is also dam of US Broodmare of the Year Delta (Nasulllah), Broodmare of the Year Levee (Hill Prince), both also star race mares, and Champion 3YO Filly Bayou (Hill Prince) and her descendants include Dike, Polonia, Sacahuista (dam of Hussonet), Coastal, Slew o’Gold and Queensland based Gr.1 winner Wicked Style (USA).

[ VALENTIA ] Exceed and Excel-Balalaika by King of Kings (IRE) The family of Free Eagle also appears in the pedigree of Cornerstone new boy Valentia, as his dam sire Mister C (USA) is a son of Danzig and the Herbager mare Honey Deb (ex Smart Deb by Dedicate). Smart Deb, winner of the Arlington Lassie Stakes and Matron Stakes, is a grandaughter of Demolition (Foray II), a half-sister to Bourtai. Valentia was bred by Fred Peisah and is from a family that has given him enormous success, tracing to the unraced import Social Smile (GB) (Ennis-Cotytto by King’s Bench) whose second dam Miss Radiant (Stardust-Celestial Light by Donatello II) is a sister to Queensland sire great Smokey Eyes (IRE). A halfsister to Miss Radiant is Latest Edition (Solferino), dam of NZ sire legend Sovereign Edition and his sister Royal News (Sovereign Path), the latter a well known name in breeding here via daughters like Life at Last, Engagement, Barron Fey, Betty Box and Royal Comment, all founders of prolific lines of this very strong family (13a) whose number include the Golden Slipper winner Overreach (Exceed and Excel). It could be a very fruitful exercise to send their descendants to Valentia.

Valentia, a $1.35m sale topper at the 2013 Gold Coast Magic Millions, had just eight starts for a Coolmore-led syndicate (his breeder retained a share) and was third on debut for trainer Gai Waterhouse behind Rubick and Twirl on a dead track over 1000m at Randwick on January 25, 2014. He was next out at Randwick on February 22 and made no mistakes to win a 1200m event for juveniles, running 1:10.41 on a dead (4) track from Greco and Khrysler. He was launched into stakes company next time out in the Skyline Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m) at Randwick and won by a half-length from Mr Bogart on a track also rated dead (4). “It was a very good win although he idled a bit when he got to the front, but Tommy Berry kept him going,” Coolmore general manager Michael Kirwan said. “The Slipper is a possibility but we will see how he pulls up.” Valentia’s Gr.2 win made him the 57th stakes winner for his illustrious sire (he now has 94) who commands the highest fee in the land (private but reported to be around $200,000). Unfortunately he missed a placing next time out, striking a heavy (8) track in the Golden Slipper when 12th of 16 behind Mossfun and was sent for a break. Valentia resumed on August 23 and again struck a heavy (9) track when a close third to Scissor Kick and Panzer Division in the Up and Coming Stakes-Gr.3 (1300m) on the Kensington track and was then fifth (again on a very heavy track) in the Ming Dynasty-Gr.3

Home grown heroes fit the bill at Darley Darley’s Kelvinside property at Aberdeen in the Hunter Valley is the new home for two of the highest profile locally bred racehorses retiring to stud in 2016, Both Gr.1 winners, they are Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo (IRE)) and Exosphere (Lonhro), whose sires also grace the Darley NSW roster.

[ EXOSPHERE ] Lonhro-Altitude by Danzero

Exosphere, whose first two dams are by Golden Slipper winners Danzero and Marscay, won five of his 10 starts and more than $1m including the Golden Rose-Gr.1 (1400m) by 2.25 lengths from Speak Fondly, running 1:21.83, the fastest ever for the three yearold feature0 at Rosehill. He showed blistering speed at his next start too, winning the Roman Consul-Gr.2 at Randwick in record time of 1:08.53 for the tough 1200m and had 3.25 lengths on runner-up Zoutenant at the finish after being eighth 400m from home. That was his third win in succession and he began the run with a 1.25 length win over Gr.1 winner Press Statement in the Run to the Rose-Gr.2 (1200m), again coming off the pace at the 400m to score well for regular rider James McDonald. Those wins came between August 29 and October 3 last year and the sequence ended next time out when the John O’Sheatrained colt was fourth behind Japonisme in the Ascot Vale (Coolmore) Stakes-Gr.1 (1200m) on October 31. Exosphere resumed in the Lightning Stakes-Gr.1 (1000m) at Flemington on February 20, 2016 and was not disgraced when fourth (1.7 lengths) behind Chautauqua and he then won a trial at Randwick in March before failing in the T.J. Smith-Gr.1 (1200m), an uncharacteristic poor display which prompted his retirement. Although his three year-old form remained a high point of a short career, Exosphere was a “boom” horse from his juvenile days after winning an 800m trial (47.20) at Warwick Farm by 6.75 lengths at his first public outing on October 10, 2014. He disappointed first up at Rosehill the following month and was then given a break until the following February, winning a Randwick trial, a Kembla maiden (1000m by 4.25 lengths) and then a four length romp in the Skyline Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m), all in the space of a month. Always well back, he was unplaced in the Golden Slipper at his only other run at two. Trainer John O’Shea described the colt as “a magnificent individual with enormous natural talent”, while Godolphin’s managing director Henry Plumptre said, “Exosphere retires with an extraordinary race record. Because of his unusual size and bulk, Exosphere had training issues but he managed to put together a string of outstanding performances. He is an exciting stallion and he is sure to be popular at $27,500.” Exosphere is among more than 600 winners (60SW)

[ KERMADEC NZ ] Teofilo (IRE)-Hy Fuji by Fuji Kiseki (JPN)

With wins in the Doncaster-Gr.1 and George Main Stakes-Gr.1 over the testing Randwick mile, there’s no doubting Kermadec’s class and courage. The son of unbeaten Teofilo (IRE) (Galileo), who was a $NZ260,000 yearling, won more than $2.9m and will stand at just $22,000. From the first crop of his sire, who also returns to Darley in 2016 (fee $44,000) after a break of three years, and a grandson of champion Galileo, Kermadec was in the first three in 11 of 17 stars, earning $2.9m. Trained by Chris Waller, the colt, out of the Fuji Kiseki (JPN) mare Hy Fuji, was given three trials, the first in May and then two in September of 2014, winning the last, before breaking his maiden over 1400m on debut at Warwick Farm on September 28, beating Careless and Quick Strike. He was not disgraced when up in grade and narrowly beaten by Muscovado over 1600m at Randwick on October 18 before heading to Melbourne and black type company in the Carbine Club StakesGr.3 (1600m), beating subsequent Gr.1 winner Stratum Star and Manhattan Avenue into the minors and running 1:37.29. Sent for a spell, he was fourth in the Eskimo Prince-Gr.3 (1200m) first up on February 7, 2015, 1.5 lengths behind Scissor Kick and then a narrow third in the Hobartville-Gr.2 (1400m) behind Hallowed Crown and Sweynesse at Rosehill on February 15, coming from eighth at the 400m. The extra 100m and the tough Randwick mile saw the three year-old turn the tables next time out in the $3m Doncaster Handicap-Gr.1 on April 6. Carrying just 51kg and staring from barrier 16 in a field of 20, he came from 10th at the 400m to beat Real Impact (55kg) by 1.75 lengths in 1:37.61, honest mare Royal Descent was third. Kermadec resumed at four on August 22 with a fifth behind Royal Descent in the Warwick StakesGr.2 (1400m) and was then runner-up to Complacent in the Chelmsford Stakes-Gr.2 (1600m) on a soft track on September 5 before claiming his second Gr.1 with a victory over Royal Descent and Pornichet in the George Main Stakes (1600m) on a soft (7) track. Dubawi son an English Guineas winner [ NIGHT OF THUNDER USA ] Dubawi (IRE)-Forest Storm by Galileo (IRE)

Dubawi (IRE) proved a great success story for Darley around the globe, so much so that the champion son of Dubai Millennium no longer shuttles. However, his classic-winning son Night of Thunder (IRE) (ex Forest Storm by Galileo (IRE)) joins the roster at Darley’s Northwood Park in 2016 on $16,500. Darley already has the Queen Elizabeth II StakesGr.1 winner Poet’s Voice (Dubawi-Bright Tiara by Chief’s Crown (USA)) doing sterling service in the Hunter Valley (2016 fee $11,000) and the UK and his first European crop includes three stakes winners from daughters of Selkirk, Sunday Silence and Tale of the Cat. His oldest in Australia are two and he already has two winners in My Country (dam by Danehill) and Mim’s Poet (dam by Redoute’s Choice). This early success of Poet’s Voice with the Danehill line and the fact his sire threw the likes of Catkins (dam by Catbird) and SA-based sire (Goldin Farms) and Gr.1 winner Akeed Mofeed (Tiger Hill) from Danehill line mares should provide a good pointer for breeders keen on using the English 2000 Guineas-Gr.1-Lockinge Stakes-Gr.1 winner Night of Thunder in his first season. He is also bred on a successful cross, the Dubawi/ Sadler’s Wells mix providing Gr.1 winners Hunter’s Light (4mx3f Shirley Heights), Arabian Queen and Monterosso (all from daughters of Barathea), while French Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Bawina is from a daughter of Sadler’s Wells, who is also sire of the second dam of Gr.2 winner Time Test (dam by Dansili) and earlier-mentioned Akeed Mofeed. The Mr. Prospector line has also proved a good foil for Dubawi (ex Zomaradah by Deploy) whose short-lived sire Dubai Millennium (Seeking the Gold) is a grandson of that horse. Dubawai’s Flight Stakes-Gr.1 and Epsom Handicap-Gr.1 winner Secret Admirer is out of a mare by Secret Savings (by Seeking the Gold, 3mx3m to that horse), while his Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner Shamal Wind is out of a mare by Machiavellian and has Mr. Prospector 4mx3m (plus an additional line of his sire Raise a Native) and Gr.2 winner Arabian Gold is out of a mare by Vettori (by Machiavellian). Owners of Star Kingdom-rich mares should note dual Gr.1 winner Srikandi’s first two dams are by Hurricane Sky and Luskin Star, while her third dam is by Baguette, whose dam is by Star Kingdom. There is a splash of Star Kingdom in the pedigree of Night of Thunder, but more of that anon. Of course they are just a fraction of Dubawi’s 104 stakes winners (13% of starters) and he’s proved a very versatile sire indeed, mixing well with many lines. He has 593 winners (73.8% of starters) of more than $121m (to early May) since beginning stud duties in the UK and Australia in 2006. Night of Thunder, a chestnut who stands 16.5 hands, won both his starts at two for Richard Hannon, landing a 6f maiden at Goodwood by six lengths and the Listed

Hannon the younger became the Trainer produce a classic winner. Next dam Quiet Storm (by of the Year in his first season with 206 winners, helped Green Desert’s triple Gr.1 winner and former shuttler by Night of Thunder’s 40/1 win in the Guineas, a race he Desert Prince) won twice at 7f-10f and was stakes placed almost threw away when veering sharply left in the final before producing four winners including Indian classic 100m. Rich Enuff ready to write cheques for astute buyers [ RICH ENUFF ] Written Tycoon-Hotnuff by Spartacus

When Jon Haseler decides to back a young stallion you can be pretty sure the horse will make a good fist of his stud career. So when it was announced that Haseler’s Glenlogan Park Stud will launch the career of speedster Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon-Hotnuff by Spartacus) in Queensland this year plenty of breeders sat up and took notice. The handsome Gr.2 winner will stand in conjunction with Woodside Park in Victoria (also home to his sire), standing alternate years in each state, as Woodside does with Zoustar who also stands at Widden Stud. He is sure to be popular as Written Tycoon’s only Queensland season produced this year’s Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, who, like his sire, was bred by Jan Clark’s Daandine Stud in that state. “We always followed Rich Enuff as a racehorse and we were actually outbid by Woodside to invest in him as a three year-old,” Glenlogan’s general manager Steve Morley said. “With Written Tycoon’s single crop of foals bred in Queensland capturing two Gr.1 two year-old races this season (Capitalist, Luna Rossa), we simply had to buy into his incredibly fast son to offer the Queensland breeders a very similar option this year.” “Written Tycoon has not only had an incredible year with his two year-olds but he is also third on the General Sires’ list by earnings and second by winners,” Matt Tillett of Woodside Park Stud said. “He has cemented himself among the elite proven stallions in Australia and he has done this off a very low base of mares, with his better crops still to come. “Written has done a fantastic job already for his supporters and our farm, we are sure that there are still even bigger things to come for him and we feel that standing his amazingly fast son with Glenlogan, Queensland in his first season will give Rich Enuff an even better opportunity than Written had when he went to stud.” Written Tycoon (Iglesia-Party Miss by Kenmare (FR)) won the Todman Slipper Trial-Gr.2 at two and this season has 102 winners of $7.83m (to April 12) to sit behind Street Cry (IRE) and Not a Single Doubt among the leading sires, great work for a horse who retired to stud in 2007. His fee in 2016 has been set at $49,500. In addition Luna Rossa (ex Wild Promises by More Than Ready (USA)) won the Manawatu Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 on April 2 for a rare Gr.1 double by his juveniles after Capitalist (ex Kitalpha by Fusaichi Pegasus) proved so dominant in both the Magic Millions 2YO and the Golden SlipperGr.1. The former’s second dam is by Redoute’s Choice, while Capitalist’s second dam is by that horse’s sire Danehill (USA), a cross that should be popular with Rich Enuff as the Danehill line features in the pedigrees of several of Written Tycoon’s stakes winners. Rich Enuff will stand at $13,750 at Glenlogan Park

Bull Point foundation sire for Kingstar [ BULL POINT ] Fastnet Rock-Rose of Cimmaron by Bite the Bullet

Enigmatic Bull Point, a horse who drove his connections, trainers and punters to despair at times but who had the talent to shine in Gr.1 company, is a foundation sire at Matthew Sandblom’s Kingstar Farm at Aberdeen in the new season. A beautifully bred son of Fastnet Rock and a $960,000 yearling, he will stand at $7700. Sandblom, who is also a major shareholder in Newgate Farm, has made a considerable investment to upgrade the former Redman Park (opposite Amarina Farm in Dalswinton Rd) and will also stand Gr.1 winner Monaco Consul ($6600) and Gr.2 winner Salade ($4400). Such as his faith in Bull Point, Sandbloom is offering the first 50 breeders who send two mares to him in each of his first two seasons lifetime breeding rights in the horse. In addition, breeders who pay a 10% premium on the fee will get a full refund of the fee if the foal dies before it turns one. The fee will also be refunded if any yearling offered at a yearling sale fails to make $20,000 or more. Bull Point won four races, ran four seconds, three thirds and was twice fourth in 25 starts to earn $552,000 with his best win coming at three when he landed the MRC Manfred Stakes-Gr.3 (1200m) by 1.25 lengths in 1:09.70, beating Worth a Ransom and subsequent Gr.1 winner The Quarterback. At his next start he was a close fourth in the MRC Futurity-Gr.1 (1400m) behind Moment of Change. Despite his mixed form later in his career it’s worth remembering that Bull Point was never further back than fourth in his first eight starts. “He’s a quality colt,” jockey Damien Oliver said after the Manfred win. “I worked him a couple of weeks ago on consecutive days with Prince Harada and they were hard to split, but Bull Point really pleased me the way he worked with blinkers on. He was always travelling well in the Manfred and showed nice acceleration to chase and catch Worth a Ransom.” Initially racing for a syndicate including Coolmore, Go Bloodstock and Emmaroo Bloodstock and trained by Gai Waterhouse, Bull Point (ex Rose of Cimmaron by Bite the Bullet (USA)) won on debut over 1000m at Randwick by two lengths on June 10, 2013. He had two other starts as a juvenile, finishing second at Rosehill behind Eurozone and then scoring over 1200m at Rosehill, beating Mr Entertainer by three lengths on July 20. In the new season he was fourth behind Eurozone at Randwick on August 10 in the Listed Rosebud and then was just pipped when second to Stamina at Rosehill (1400m), before a third to Zoustar and Dissident in the Golden Rose-Gr.1 (1400m), beaten 1.75 lengths after being in a hopeless position on the turn. His Golden Rose run was exceptional as he was six lengths off the second last horse Criterion at the 900m in a very fast run race and then powered home when

STALLION PROFILE by David Bay

CRITERION CRITERION raced only in the best company and proved one of the toughest and most competitive performers of his generation over four seasons to earn more than $7.3m. A son of Golden Slipper winner Sebring and from a high-class American family, he joins the star-studded roster at Newgate Farm in 2016.

C

RITERION (NZ), who retires to Newgate Farm in 2016 on $35,750, is an exception in an era when young stallion prospects become so valuable they are rushed off to stud after only a handful of starts. The handsome chestnut had 36 starts from age two to five (35 at black type level), won four Gr.1 and was in the first three in 21 starts, earning $7.317m.

inbreeding to Mr. Prospector (5m,5fx4f), with an additional line of that horse’s sire Raise a Native through his champion son Alydar; plus Buckpasser (6fx5f,6m) and influential mare Fanfreluche (6fx6m), through her daughter Grand Luxe (Sir Ivor) and son l’Enjoleur (Buckpasser) and more distant line breeding to her sire Northern Dancer (5f,6m,7fx7f) and to Nasrullah.

This makes him the highest earner of Australian prize money to retire to stud. He earned World Thoroughbred Rankings of 117 (2014) and 120 (2015) when he was equal Leading Older Male (extended). Criterion (Sebring-Mica’s Pride by Bite the Bullet (USA)) also boasts a very good pedigree as he’s by Champion 2YO Colt and Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner and now successful sire Sebring (More Than Ready (USA)), while his dam is a Gr.3 winner from a high-class US family and has produced seven winners including other stakes winners Varenna Miss and Silently.

Starting off in the stables of David Payne, Criterion made his debut at Rosehill (1100m) on November 3, 2012, winning by a half-length in 1:05.89 from subsequent Gr.1 winner Sweet Idea. Put away until February 16, 2013, the two year-old was beaten three lengths on a dead (5) track in the Listed Canonbury Stakes behind Never Can Tell and Whittington and then bounced back in a field of 14 to collect the Black Opal Stakes-LR (1200m) on a dead (4) Canberra track from Sidestep on March 10, wearing blinkers for the first time.

A look at the sires in the fourth generation of his pedigree confirms this excellence; Halo, Woodman, Danehill (USA), Luskin Star, Bold Bidder, Alydar, Mr. Prospector and Alleged. His pedigree shows strong

Criterion put himself into contention for the Golden Slipper at Rosehill on March 23, beating Fast ‘n’ Rocking and Havana in the Todman Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m) at Rosehill. “He’s still a bit of a thinker and

the blinkers have definitely done the trick. There is improvement to come too,” Payne said after the Todman, while jockey Craig Williams described him as “quite an unusual, very relaxed type of two year-old, but most importantly he’s very solid and he’d be a main contender for the Slipper.” Unfortunately a win in the major juvenile event was not to be. Criterion was sixth (of 16) in the Slipper-Gr.1 behind Overreach and then sixth (of 13, two lengths) in the Champagne-Gr.1 (1600m) behind Guelph. The colt, bred and owned by New Zealand businessman Sir Owen Glenn, started his three year-old season with an 11th in the Run to the Rose-Gr.3 on August 31 and a similar placing in the Golden RoseGr.1 on September 14 before a narrow second to Eurozone in the Stan Fox Stakes-Gr.2 on September 28 and a 1.25 length second to Savvy Nature in the Spring Champion Stakes-Gr.1 (2000m) on October 12. Taken to Melbourne, he was fourth in the 2500m VRC Derby-Gr.1 (4.5 lengths) to Polanski, Complacent and Thunder Fantasy before going for a break. Back at the track on February 15, he was fourth in the VRC C.S. Hayes-Gr.3 (1400m) behind

Taken to Sydney, he was eighth in the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) behind Dissident (also by Sebring) on March 15 before claiming his first Gr.1 in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m), beating Thunder Fantasy by 3.5 lengths on a slow (7) track with Hugh Bowman taking control in the straight to storm home on the talented three year-old. Payne said the horse was more mature than when he finished fourth in the VRC Derby in the spring. “From day one we knew this is what he’s been looking for, distances of 2000m and above,” Payne said. “We still didn’t know about the weather and if he could handle the wet, but it looks like it’s not a problem for him. He’ll be winning the Derby hopefully.” That assessment proved correct and Criterion’s second Gr.1 came next start on April 12 when he won the $2m Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick (heavy 9), beating Tupac Amaru by a half-length in a field of 18. “We got him for the Slipper, but it just shows you there are no rules in racing,” Payne said after the Derby. “But this fellow needed time, he’s only becoming a horse now. He’s furnished and it makes a difference and I think he’ll be an even better four year-old.” Criterion’s four year-old season started on August 23 when he was third in the Warwick Stakes-Gr.2 (1400m) behind Tiger Tees and Royal Descent, beaten 1.5 lengths on a heavy (9) Kensington track and he was unplaced on a similar surface in the Chelmsford Stakes-Gr.2 behind Hawkspur on September 6. He struck a good track next time out in the Hill Stakes-Gr.2 (2000m) at Randwick on September 20 when runner-up to Junoob and then went to Caulfield where he was just pipped by Fawkner in the Caulfield Stakes-Gr.1 (2000m) on a good track on October 11. He was seventh in the Cox Plate-Gr.1 behind Adelaide and then fifth in the Mackinnon-Gr.1 behind Happy Trails on November 1 at his final start for Payne. Transferred to David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Criterion went to Hong Kong for the Longines HK Cup-Gr.1 (2000m), going down 1.1 lengths when third to Designs on Rome and Military Attack. He returned to Australian racing on March 7 with a 1.25 length third behind Cosmic Endeavour and Catkins in the Canterbury Stakes-Gr.1 (1300m) at Randwick and was then the narrowest of seconds behind Japanese raider Real Impact (Kermadec third) in the George Ryder-Gr.1 (1500m in 1:28.29) at Rosehill on March 21. Kermadec would go on to nudge out Real Impact in the Doncaster next time out on April 6, while Criterion scored a historic victory in the $4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes-Gr.1 (2000m) at Randwick on April 11, winning the crowning event of The Championships by 2.25 lengths from grand international campaigner Red Cadeaux and Royal Descent, backing up from a third in the Doncaster, on the soft (7) track.

retirement from the track as the winner of seven, with seven seconds, seven thirds and two fourths in 36 starts and earnings of $7,317,687.

It was no disgrace to be beaten into second by champion Winx in the Cox Plate-Gr.1 (2040m), with Highland Reel third, on October 24 and then his really showed some backbone over the marathon 3200m of the $6m Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 on November 3, carrying 57.5kg to be 1.25 lengths third behind Prince of Penzance and Max Dynamite in a field of 24.

Tough and competitive over four seasons of racing, Criterion is by Sebring, Australia’s Champion 2YO of 2007-08 and winner of five of his six starts at two ($2.53m) including the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 and AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 and runner-up in the Champagne Stakes-Gr.1. Sebring came to hand early, winning the Breeders’ Plate-LR (1100m) and he also won the Canonbury Stakes-LR and he is the son of a very good US juvenile (won five from seven) in More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo-Woodman’s Girl by Woodman (USA)), who trained on to collect the King’s Bishop Stakes-Gr.1 (7f) at three after being tested as a Derby horse (he was fourth in the Kentucky DerbyGr.1 and runner-up in the Blue Grass-Gr.1).

Unplaced in the HK Cup on December 13, Criterion was off the scene until March 5 this year, when he was last of seven in the Canterbury Stakes-Gr.1 (1300m), before a third in the Ranvet-Gr.1 behind The United States on March 19 and an unplaced run in the Queen Elizabeth on April 9, a race which signalled his

It was a training effort and a half to have the entire ready for his next assignment on October 10. While More Than Ready has become a very good sire of two year-olds, think Golden Slipper winners like Sebring and Phelan Ready (dam by Blevic) and this season’s Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 winner Prized Icon (Danehill), he has more dimensions as a sire also getting champion middle distance performer More Joyous (inbred to Halo), NZ Oaks-Gr.1 winner More Than Sacred (Danehill), Victoria Derby-Gr.1 winner Benicio (Danehill) and WA Derby-Gr.1/WA Oaks-Gr.3 heroine Dreamaway (Danehill) as well as older Gr.1 sprinters like Perfectly Ready (Danehill) among his 158 stakes winners. He has more than 1450 winners (73%) with earnings topping $159m.

Bite the Bullet (USA) (Spectacular Bid-Lassie’s Lady by Alydar)

The Danehill connection continues with Sebring as his dam Purespeed is a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Flying Spur (Danehill) and from Lady Moulin, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Luskin Star (Kaoru Star), while his third dam Willowy, won the Listed Fernhill Handicap at two and is a daughter of champion sire Better Boy (IRE)). Sebring entered stud in 2009 and his fee at Widden in 2016 is $77,000. As well as getting Criterion in his first crop, he also had the 2014-15 Horse of the Year Dissident (Anabaa), who is also on the stallion roster at Newgate ($33,000 in 2016). Dissident’s seven wins (1000m-1600m) included the All-Aged Stakes-Gr.1, Randwick Guineas-Gr.1, Makybe Diva Stakes-Gr.1, Memsie Stakes-Gr.1 and Orr Stakes-Gr.1 and as well as his HOY honours, he was also rated Champion Sprinter and Champion Older Horse. He was precocious enough to win the Blue Diamond preview on debut at two. There have been good horses in every crop since including Gr.2 winner and Golden Slipper third Bring Me The Maid (Belong to Me), Gr.2 winners Believe Yourself (Encosta de Lago, inbred to the Mr. Prospector mare Rolls (USA), dam of Flying Spur and second dam of Encosta de Lago), Hatori Hanzo (Marauding), Seaburge and Catch a Fire (also with dams by Encosta de Lago) and Gr.3 winners Thurlow (King’s Chapel), Scratchy Bottom (Danehill), Kiss a Rose (Redoute’s Choice), the last two with doubles of Danehill, and Clifton Red (Encosta de Lago, second dam by Century; doubling Rolls and Better Boy). Sebring was third on the Australian sires’ list in 2014-15 and already has 208 winners (57.3%) of $29.32m, 21 of them stakes winners (5.8% of starters) and this record is sure to improve given the quality books he has covered in recent seasons, looking after 203, 223, 192 and 176 mares in the past four years. His progeny have a winning distance index of 1372m. He has 95 winners (7SW) of $7.05m this season (to May 16) to be eighth on the sires’ list by earnings (behind Street Cry). Criterion was conceived at Widden Stud but born in NZ where his dam had been sent to visit leading sire O’Reilly, subsequently producing the minor winner Outroar by that horse. Mica’s Pride, owned by Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, has since had a colt by Fastnet Rock called Coming Through and colts by Pierro and Fastnet Rock in 2014 and 2015 and missed to Sebring this season. Mica’s Pride won three races to 1250m including the STC Research Stakes-Gr.3 and she is a sister to stakes placed Money Begets Money, second dam of Listed winner Malice (Teofilo) and to Rose of Cimmaron, dam of Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 placed Bull Point (Fastnet Rock), who retires to Kingstar Farm at Denman in 2016 on $7700. Seven of Mica’s Pride’s eight named foals have raced and won including the Gr.2 winner Varenna Miss (Redoute’s Choice), who was also twice Gr.1 fourth (Oakleigh Plate and BTC Cup) and Listed winner Silently (Anabaa), dam of South African Gr.3 winner Muwaary (O’Reilly). Mica’s Pride is by Bite the Bullet (USA) (Spectacular Bid-Lassie’s Lady by Alydar),

a US Gr.2 winner at 6f and third in the Arlington Washington Futurity-Gr.1, who retired to stud in Australia in 1992 and carved out a very good career despite modest opportunity, leaving 19SW including triple Gr.1 winner Sniper’s Bullet and Group winners The Jackal and Pleasure Giver among a host of winners in a long career of 21 seasons (635 live foals). He died in March 2013, a year when his final crop of five foals arrived. His sire Spectacular Bid (Bold Bidder-Spectacular by Promised Land, a horse inbred 3fx3f to To Market (also dam sire of Marscay) was US Horse of the Year at four and a champion at two and three with his 26 wins including the Kentucky Derby-Gr.1 and Preakness Stakes-Gr.1. He became an outstanding sire of turf performers in the US. Bite the Bullet is a three-quarter brother to minor US stakes winner Spectacular Spy (USA), a success in a short stud career in NSW, while his stakes placed dam, Lassie’s Lady, a daughter of five-time Gr.1 winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Alydar, is a half-sister to nine other winners including the Gr.1 winners Weekend Surprise (Secretariat), dam of sires A.P. Indy and Summer Squall; and Wolfhound (Nureyev), from Gr.3 winner Lassie Dear (Buckpasser). This is a very prolific and high-class family and offers some interesting inbreeding opportunities with Criterion, perhaps via mares with Summer Squall or A.P. Indy in their pedigrees. Other sires from this immediate family include Lemon Drop Kid, Statue of Liberty (USA) and Duke of Marmalade (IRE), while a recent star is English Derby hero Ruler of the World (Galileo). Mica’s Pride is from the imported Gainesville (CAN) (Afleet-Adarling by Alleged), an unraced sister to Gr.3 winner Afleetaffair (CAN), who stood in Queensland (1999-2013, 209 foals), and to Listed winner Justadarling. Gainesville’s 11 foals all won and also include the Listed winner and Group placed Amah Rock (Fastnet Rock) and Bite the Bullet’s daughter Joleur (dam of stakes winners Upon This Rock, Bhutane Dane and Gaze On and second dam of Gr.3 winner Najoom). Her sire Afleet (Mr. Prospector-Polite Lady by Venetian Jester), a Horse of the Year in Canada and a very good sire, won the Jerome Handicap-Gr.1 and was third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint-Gr.1, while her dam, Adarling, a daughter of dual Arc winner and twice European Horse of the Year Alleged (Hoist the Flag), was a stakes winner and Gr.1 placed in Canada and

is a daughter of Canadian Oaks winner and Champion 3YO Filly of Canada, Avowal, a daughter of l’Enjoleur (Buckpasser-Fanfreluche by Northern Dancer). The Gr.1 winner Fanfreluche of course being the third dam of Flying Spur and fourth dam of Encosta de Lago. Avowal left five winners including Canadian Gr.3 winner and Queen’s Plate-Gr.1 runner-up Freedom Fleet (Afleet). Next dam Well In Hand (Bold Ruler-Bull Poise by Bull Lea) is a grandaughter of Alpoise (by Equipoise from the Selima Stakes winner Laughing Queen by Sun Briar). Alpoise is also second dam of multiple Gr.1 winner and sire Tom Fool (Menow-Gaga by Bull Dog), sire of Buckpasser and grandsire of Lunchtime (GB)). Laughing Queen, who is Criterion’s eighth dam, is a sister to Futurity Stakes/Hopeful Stakes winner and notable sire Pompey (32SW), a Champion 2YO Colt in the US. Their dam is CCA Oaks and Champagne Stakes winner Cleopatra (Corcyra-Gallice by Gallinule). This is family 3j. “It is a real privilege to be entrusted by Sir Owen Glenn with such an exceptional racehorse as Criterion,” Newgate Farm’s Henry Field said when announcing the entire would stand at his Hunter Valley property. “He danced every dance through his career, developing into one of the toughest and most versatile racehorses of the modern era. He is the type of horse every breeder dreams of breeding and every owner dreams of owning.” “He’s done me proud,” Sir Owen said of his “once in a lifetime horse”. The 76 year-old millionaire and philanthropist, who is battling liver cancer, is determined to see Criterion succeed at stud and will be sending him some choice mares. “He’s proved himself as a sprinter, a middle-distance horse and then a stayer. I don’t know any other thoroughbred who has done all three. He's a remarkable horse with a great spirit. I wish I had called him ‘Indomitable’. “He’s tried to bite me and kick me, just being a bit frisky. But he doesn't owe me anything and I hope he has a long and happy career at stud. What I want is for him to do his best. That’s all. And the last time I lifted his ear I said, ‘have I got some girlfriends for you’.” n

Success easy to predict for Nostradamus [ NOSTRADAMUS ] Medaglia d’Oro (USA)-Leone Chiara by Lion Hunter

The 16th century apothecary and seer Nostradamus was very fond of making predictions but his equine namesake lets his actions do all the talking. A recordsetting horse with a brilliant turn of foot, the son of Medaglia d’Oro (USA) will retire to Rosemont Stud in Victoria in 2016. A half-brother to dual Gr.1 winner and now successful young Widden Stud sire Star Witness, whose sire Starcraft (NZ) also stands at Rosemont alongside Toorak Toff, Nostradamus was a $500,000 Easter yearling in 2013 and provided his high profile shuttle sire with his first Australian winner. Still in training in late May, the four year-old has four wins and two seconds in 20 starts for earnings of $404,130. He will stand his first season at $8800 including GST. Nostradamus kicked off his career for Team Hawkes on January 18, 2014 with an easy win down the straight Flemington 1100m course, running 1:04.92 on a dead track to account for Jarklin by 2.25 lengths. He was awkwardly away but quickly mustered speed for Glen Boss and was always travelling well. “He wasn’t pretty out of the gates but I said to Bossy if something went wrong, don’t panic,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said. He’s got a good turn of foot and if you watch the replay you can see how low he got. His whole action just dropped and he flattened out really well.” Nostradamus remained in Melbourne where he was fourth of 16 (two lengths) in the Blue Diamond PreludeGr.3 (1100m) behind Rubick and was then seventh of 16 in the Blue Diamond-Gr.1 (3.6 lengths) behind Earthquake on February 22. Off the scene until August 16, he won the San Domenico Stakes-Gr.3 (1100m), running a race record 1:03.63 on a good Rosehill track, beating Washington Heights and Law into the minors, the margins three quarters of a length, by a length. “I think he is going to get better the further they go because he is so relaxed, almost lazy, in what he does, but he still has the ability to let down like he did here,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said after the Gr.3 win. “You have to remember that was only his fourth start and he is still learning.” Nostradamus was then seventh in the Run to the Rose-Gr.3 on a heavy track on August 30 and then struck a dead track when fifth of 15 in the Golden RoseGr.1, beaten just 2.1 lengths by Hallowed Crown on September 13. He was then runner-up to Brazen Beau in the Roman Consul-Gr.2 before an unplaced run in the Coolmore-Gr.1 on November 1. He was mid-field in the Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 behind Shamal Wind when he resumed on February 28, 2015 and then unplaced over 1100m at Flemington and in the Royal Sovereign-Gr.2 at Randwick before beating Time For War by three-quarters of a length in the Gold Coast Guineas-Gr.3 (1200m) on April 25 and then finishing mid-field in the BTC Cup-Gr.1. Nostradamus was a first-up second in Brisbane on August 29 and then unplaced in the Theo Marks-Gr.2 and City Tatts Lightning-LR on October 17 before his sale to Rosemont. He was sent to leading SA trainer

Sun Stud's newcomers kept best company Sun Stud has signalled its commitment to the Australian breeding industry by adding a further two stallions to the two-state roster in 2016. The former Eliza Park International, which has recently been rebranded, will stand Caulfield Guineas placegetter and Golden Slipper fourth Ready For Victory in Victoria and Queensland Guineas winner and Blue Diamond runner-up Jabali in Queensland. Sun International, part of a group owned by Cheng Ting Kong, a businessman in his early 40s who races horses throughout Asia, purchased Eliza Park (renamed Eliza Park International) in mid-2013 and this year has rebranded it as Sun Stud. It has recently formed the Sun Club as an innovative way of supporting Ready for Victory and Jabali, offering the chance to secure lifetime breeding rights in the young sires for a modest additional outlay. “The premise for Sun Club is quite simple,” the stud’s sales and nominations manager Mark Lindsay said. “Basically, Sun Club members send one mare to Ready for Victory in 2016 for $16,500, which comprises his 2016 fee of $9900, plus $6600 for VOBIS Sires’ Scheme/Sun Club membership, or to Jabali for $9900, which is his service fee of $7700, plus $2200 Sun Club membership and payment is not due until you have a foal on the ground. Then you are open to send a mare for free in 2017 and 2018 and any member who fills the three nominations receives a lifetime breeding right to that stallion.”

[ READY FOR VICTORY ] More Than Ready (USA)-Crillon (NZ) by Zabeel

Ready for Victory, bred by GSA Bloodstock and a $240,000 Magic Millions yearling, made everybody sit up and take notice when the Mick Price-trained youngster won the Listed VRC Festival of Racing Stakes from Heatherly on debut on March 7, 2015, running the 1000m in a slick 57.72. Price said the horse had always been one of his better two year-olds but illness delayed the start of his career. “I had him up for the Blue Diamond but he got a cold, however he was physically right today and he came and won,” he said. “The owners are keen to run him in the Slipper, it’s a very big task obviously, but you certainly can’t win it sitting at home.” Three weeks later the inexperienced youngster, racing in the Eliza Park International colours, faced the pressure cooker of the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 (1200m) at Rosehill. The green colt was the widest runner on the turn and didn’t help his chances when he veered out a bit in the straight as he charged home. He still won plenty of admirers with his fourth (1.75 lengths) of 16 behind Vancouver, who ran 1:09.74. He was seventh in the ATC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 on April 6 and sent for a spell.

STALLION PROFILE by David Bay

TRUST IN A GUST A dual Gr.1 winner of 10 races and more than $1m and a grandson of breed shapers Sunday Silence and Storm Cat, Trust in a Gust retires to Swettenham Stud at Nagambie in 2016. The talented performer looks certain to prove popular with breeders looking for a sire who will produce SuperVOBIS stars.

UAL Gr.1 winner Trust in a Gust, who retires to Swettenham Stud, Victoria on a $12,500 fee in 2016, certainly earns bragging rights when its time to talk about pedigrees. Not only is he by a son of Kentucky Derby winner and Japanese super sire Sunday Silence, but his dam, a three-quarter sister to an English Oaks winner, is by a US champion sire Storm Cat. You don’t get much better than that.

A $45,000 Inglis Premier Sale buy in 2012 and with earnings of $1.13m from 10 wins, five seconds and a third in 23 starts when trained for a big syndicate of owners by Darren Weir, the handsome chestnut is a dinky die Aussie, despite his international pedigree. His record shows just how suited he was to our style of racing. He was beaten “a lip” on debut at two in the $280,000 Bendigo Gold Rush (1000m) when a dead-heat second with Hard Stride behind Iconic and then third

in Melbourne behind Weinholt at his only other start as a juvenile. He resumed mid-September and broke his maiden by four lengths over 1009m at Echuca, running 59.22 on a dead track and won again at Stawell (1309m) two weeks later before heading to town for a fourth in the Listed Gothic Stakes behind subsequent Gr.1 winner Hucklebuck. Trust in a Gust (Keep the Faith-Subtle Breeze (USA) by Storm Cat) then won his next four starts between November 24, 2013 and January 24, 2014, scoring over 1300m at Bendigo (1.5 lengths), then in the $128,000 VOBIS Gold Eureka Stockade, 1400m at Ballarat by 2.75 lengths, the MRC VOBIS Gold Carat (1200m) and the MVRC Chandler Macleod Stakes (1500m) carrying 60kg on a dead track and beating Written Up by 1.25 lengths. He chased more VOBIS riches in the $100,000 El Dorado (1300m) on March 2 and was a narrow second to Worth a Ransom before a sixth in the Bendigo Guineas-LR and then a second to Worth

a Ransom in the $280,000 VRC VOBIS Gold Reef (1600m) on April 5. Another purple patch of form followed when he resumed as a four year-old on August 23 with a win at Moonee Valley (1200m in 1:10.81), a second in the MVRC Chandler Macleod Stakes-LR on September 6, a 2.25 length win over Gr.1 winner Lucky Hussler in the MRC Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1400m) on September 20 and then his first Gr.1 win in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) beating multiple Gr.1 winner and Horse of the Year Dissident and Bull Point in 1:23.00 on September 28. The top form continued next start when he won the MRC Toorak Handicap-Gr.1 (1600m in 1:35.2), beating Speediness and Desert Jeuney on October 11, to be the first horse since Barely a Moment in 2005 to complete this big race double. “He puts himself in the race on the corner and toughs it out in the straight. He’s a pleasure to train. We always

knew he was quite a good galloper but to get to this level was a surprise,” Weir said after the Toorak. “We brought him in for the spring not knowing where we were going to end up but it’s been a great ride so far. It took us a long time to win a Gr.1 (in Victoria) and now we’ve got a couple with a great little horse.

Sunday Silence (USA) (Halo-Wishing Well by Understanding)

“What a great horse to train, he’s perfect,” Weir said. “He’s sound, tough and makes his own luck. It’s been a great ride for a lot of people. All the staff at home, the owners, who are a great bunch, plus John Foote, who picked him out as a yearling. And he’s been a great advertisement for VOBIS Gold. He has won from 1009m-1600m.” A minor leg injury after the Toorak ensured Trust in a Gust had just two runs in 2015 including a narrow second to Red Bomber in the $180,000 MRC VOBIS Gold Sprint and he was retired after four mid-field runs between January and March 2016. With his 17 first four placings in 23 starts and earnings of $1,170,150 highlighting his consistency, he should be a great asset for Victoria. Arrowfield’s John Messara has always been a great fan of Sunday Silence (Halo-Wishing Well by Understanding) and obtained several southern-time breeding rights to the horse over a few seasons, sending mares to Japan and then bringing them to Australia to foal down. Keep the Faith (ex Duelling Girl by Dayjur), a stakes winner in Australia and stakes placed in the US and foaled in 2000, is one of the horses born as a result of Messara’s bold plan. He was bred in partnership with the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Gainsborough Stud Australia. From just 28 foals this Sunday Silence experiment produced 20 who remained in Australia including Australian Oaks winner Sunday Joy (dam of multiple Gr.1 winner More Joyous), black type producers Sunday Service and Sunday Valentine and stallions Silent Action, Sunday Knight and short-lived Any Given Sunday, along with Keep the Faith, who began his stud life at Adam Sangster’s Swettenham Stud in Victoria in 2006 and now stands at John and Laurie McCarthy’s at Greta West Stud. It’s hardly surprising that the Arrowfield principal was so keen on Sunday Silence, as he was a superb racehorse and sire, winning the Kentucky Derby-Gr.1 and Preakness-Gr.1 in 1989 and running second behind Easy Goer in the Belmont before beating that horse in the end of season Breeder’ Cup Classic-Gr.1. He won nine of 14 starts and was five times second, earning $4.68m, before his sale to Japan’s Zenya Yoshida (Shadai Stallion Station) and topped the sires’ list in that country from 1995-2007. He died in August 2002. Messara shuttled undefeated champion two year-old Fuji Kiseki (JPN) (Sunday Silence-Millracer by Le Fabuleux) between 1998-2002 (321 foals), his best here being South African and Dubai Gr.1 winner Sun Classique and also had a hand in shuttling Gr.1 winner Bubble Gum Fellow (JPN) (ex Bubble Company by Lyphard), sire of NZ Gr.1 winner Rockabubble and Craiglee Stakes-Gr.2 winner Confectioner, in 1999-2000. His love affair with the line continues in 2016 when he shuttles the Japanese and Australian Gr.1 winner Real Impact (JPN) (Deep Impact-Tokio Reality (USA) by Meadowlake) whose sire, a son of Sunday Silence, has inherited his own sire’s mantle as the champion stallion in Japan. Real Impact’s two Australian starts in March and April 2015 resulted in a win in the George Ryder Stakes-Gr.1, beating Criterion, and a second to Kermadec in the Doncaster Mile-Gr.1. The breeding of Trust in a Gust is all down to Adam Sangster who stood Keep the Faith when he retired to stud in 2006 after a career of 12 starts that netted five wins and two thirds, the best of his wins being the MRC Schweppervescence Cup-LR (1600m) at Caulfield and he was also fourth in the Canterbury Guineas-Gr.1. He was Gr.2 placed in the Kelso Stakes and won

an Allowance at Belmont in three starts in the US as a five year-old. He ran 1:06.82 in his 6f win at Belmont, wining by 2.5 lengths and set a new US turf record for the distance. Keep the Faith’s winning dam is a three-quarter sister to Gr.2 winner Always Fair and Listed winner Asaasy (both by Danzig) and half-sister to Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Faithful Son (Zilzal). Her sire Dayjur (Danzig-Gold Beauty by Mr. Prospector) was a Horse of the Year in Britain and Champion European Sprinter with wins including the Prix de l’Abbaye-Gr.1, Nunthorpe Stakes-Gr.1 and Haydock Sprint Cup-Gr.1. Although he died young, he has become a noted broodmare sire and is bred on the Danzig/Buckpasser cross, similar to nine-times Australian Champion Sire Danehill (USA) (Danzig-Razyana by His Majesty).

Golden Slipper winner Flying Spur (Danehill-Rolls (USA) by Mr. Prospector) is bred on a similar cross to Dayjur and his daughters could be a good fit with Trust in a Gust. His sire has already produced Listed winner Lucky Penny to a mare by Flying Spur (that mating doubling Danzig 4mx4m, Buckpasser 4fx6f, Mr. Prospector 5fx4f and Round Table 5fx5m). Keep the Faith had had 180 winners from 268 starters (67.2%) for progeny earnings topping $10m and his six stakes winners (2.2%) also include Gr.3 winner Dinkum Diamond (Deveraja), Socks (by Storm Bird son Mukkaddamah), Lucky Penny (Flying Spur), Honey Steel’s Gold (by Encosta de Lago, whose second dam is Rolls) and Soldi Domani (Bel Esprit). There are stakes placed runners out of daughters of Danehill, Encosta de Lago (2), Anabaa (by Danzig, 2) and

Trust in a Gust

Dash For Cash. His progeny have a winning distance index of 1325m. The pedigree of Dinkum Diamond is an interesting one as Dayjur’s third dam Minstrelete is by Round Table and from a daughter of Sir Gaylord, while Devaraja’s sire Sir Tristram (IRE) is by a son of Sir Gaylord and from a daughter of Round Table. This suggests further use of the Sir Tristam line across Trust in a Gust could be prudent (especially as Storm Cat’s dam is by Secretariat, a half-brother to Sir Gaylord), maybe using daughters of Lonhro or his short-lived brother Niello. Their dam is by a son of Mr. Prospector and doubling this horse also seems to work with Keep The Faith. Keep The Faith’s stakes winner from a daughter of Royal Academy son Bel Espirit is worth noting as a similar mating with Trust in a Gust should be even more powerful. Storm Cat’s second dam Crimson Saint is the dam of Royal Academy and Storm Cat’s sire Storm Bird and Royal Academy’s sire Nijinsky share many common ancestors. Of course Royal Academy (grandson) and Storm Cat (son) are from the Northern Dancer male line, a proven nick with Halo, whose dam Cosmah is a half-sister to Natalma, dam of Northern Dancer (and third dam of Danehill). The dam of Trust in a Gust arrived in Australia after Adam Sangster went to the dispersal of his late father Robert’s bloodstock interests at Keeneland in Kentucky in November 2007. Through agent Adrian Hancock (Hancock Quality Bloodstock) he went to $US140,000 to purchase the young Storm Cat mare Subtle Breeze (USA), who was bred by his father, and she arrived in Australia in early 2008. She was covered by Soldier’s Tale (USA) (by the Nureyev son Stravinsky (USA)) later that year. Subtle Breeze is a three-quarter sister to one of the great fillies bred by Robert Sangster in Balanchine (Storm Bird), winner of the Irish Derby-Gr.1, English

Oaks-Gr.1 and runner-up in the 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 for Sheikh Maktoum Al Maktoum (but racing for Godolphin) who purchased her privately at two. She was rated Champion European Three Year-Old in 1994. Their dam, stakes placed Morning Devotion (by Raise a Native grandson Affirmed from Morning Has Broken by Prince John) also produced, to covers by Nureyev, the Gr.2 winner Romanov and Red Slippers (dam of French Oaks winner West Wind by Machiavellian and Listed winner Redbridge by Alleged). Eastern Joy, another daughter of Red Slippers, is the dam of Group winners Ihtimal (Shamardal) and First Victory (Teofilo). Trust in a Gust’s fifth dam is the Nasrullah mare Queen Nasra (ex Bayborough by Stimulus). Morning Devotion’s unraced daughter Humble Devotion is the dam of Group winner and producer Humble Eight, while First Night (Sadler’s Wells), a stakes placed daughter of Morning Devotion, is second dam of imported 2016 Doncaster Prelude-Gr.3 winner and The Metropolitan-Gr.1 third Havana Cooler (IRE) (Hurricane Run). This is also the family of Gr.1 winners Art Connoisseur and Saoirse Abu and Japanese Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Shonan Mighty (by Sunday Silence son Manhattan Café). Morning Has Broken is a half-sister to US multiple Gr.1 winner and Joint Champion US 2YO Filly of 1978 It’s In The Air (Mr. Prospector-A Wind is Rising by Francis S.), dam of French Gr.2 winner Bitooh (Seattle Slew). This is family 4k, whose members also include Gr.1 winner Alverta (Flying Spur), whose third dam is It’s In The Air, and US and European Gr.1 winner Storming Home (Machiavellian). John Messara sent Alverta to Japan in 2015 where she was covered southern time by Horse of the Year and champion sire Deep Impact before return home. She has already had a filly by another Halo-line horse in More Than Ready

(USA) in 2013 and this youngster will race in Japan. The Soldier’s Tale-Subtle Breeze mating produced a filly, Down to Luck, unplaced in two starts and now a broodmare for Adam Sangster, so far producing colts by Kaphero and Keep The Faith before a cover by Master of Design in 2015. Subtle Breeze, whose sire Storm Cat (Storm Bird-Terlingua by Secretariat) was a Gr.1 winner before becoming Champion Sire in the US, produced Trust in a Gust in 2010, slipped in 2011 and then foaled colts by Equiano (FR) (The Show Goes On), Master of Design (Artistic Design) and Pierro, before producing a filly by Equiano in 2015. Subtle Breeze is also dam of the Elusive Quality (USA) gelding Seachantach (USA), foaled in 2006 and winner of four races in Ireland and the UAE. The Halo line has been successful in Australia, particularly through Vinery’s wonderful stallion More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo-Woodman’s Girl by Woodman) and that branch of the line now continues via that horse’s Golden Slipper-winning son Sebring (ex Purespeed by Flying Spur). Given the success of eight-times Gr.1 winner More Joyous (by More Than Ready from a daughter of Sunday Silence and carrying Halo 3mx3m) and my earlier comments about Flying Spur, it would be no surprise to see daughters of Sebring (Mr. Prospector 4mx4f) produce remarkable results when covered by Trust in a Gust (this would give Halo 4mx5m; Danzig 5mx6m), ditto daughters of More Than Ready. Courage and talent are qualities we all love in thoroughbreds and Trust in a Gust had them in spades. He won twice at the highest level and he has a really attractive pedigree. Standing on a modest fee of just $12,500 and with lifetime breeding rights available for $25,000 (including GST), he is quite capable of adding a bright new chapter to the Sangster family’s remarkable international success story. n

Juvenile stars join Vinery roster Vinery welcomes two newcomers to its stallion barn in the new season with the Scone nursery becoming home to dual Gr.1 winner Press Statement and Gr.2 winner Headwater. Both members of the Danehill tribe, Press Statement is a son of Yarraman Park’s boom young sire Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), his first son at stud, and Headwater is by Darley’s international sire success Exceed and Excel. “We are delighted to be able to offer breeders these two exceptional colts in 2016,” Vinery general manager Peter Orton said. “We feel both exude the vital elements of race record, pedigree and physique, traits so necessary to upgrade their mares and make an impact at stud.”

[ PRESS STATEMENT ] Hinchinbrook-Kaaptive Empress by Kaaptive Edition (NZ)

Press Statement won six of his 11 starts for trainer Chris Waller and more than $1.8m and will stand at $27,500. His debut run gave indication of his obvious ability when he came from fifth at the 400m to score a 1.5 length victory over Volante in an 1100m juvenile event at Canterbury on April 29, 2015. Stepped up in class over 1350m at Rosehill on May 30, the colt was always in command, leading all the way, and he had a half-length to spare over Shards at the post. His third and final start as a juvenile came at Doomben on June 6 in the $600,000 J.J. Atkins StakesGr.1 (1600m) which he won by three-quarters of a length from Sagaronne after sitting off the pace and coming with a strong late charge, running 1:35.40. It was a tremendous effort to go from maiden to Gr.1 winner in just three starts and in winning the Doomben feature he emulated his short-lived halfbrother Pressday (Domesday), who won the race (then called the T.J. Smith Classic) in 2010 and stood just one season at stud in 2012, leaving 34 live foals, before his death the following January. His three year-old season began in more muted fashion on August 29, 2015 when he was runner-up to Exosphere in the Run to the Rose-Gr.2 (1.25 lengths) and then fifth to that horse in the Golden Rose-Gr.1 (1400m). He was back on track at his third start though, toying with his rivals when winning the Stan Fox Stakes-Gr.2 (1500m), also at Rosehill, on September 26, having three lengths on Shards as they passed the post in a win jockey Hugh Bowman described as “painless”. Taken to Caulfield for the $1m Guineas-Gr.1 on October 10, the son of Hinchinbrook made every post a winner, leading all the way beat Lizard Island by 1.75 lengths. Starting $2.50 favourite, he defied the pattern of racing at Caulfield prompting Chris Waller to comment, “He’s a good horse and that’s what good horses do, they change the trends.” Bowman called him a “star in the making” and said, “Although we had to ride him a bit out of his comfort zone, his class came to the fore.”

He is a three-quarter bother to Gr.1 winner and sire Snitzel and Gr.3 winner Viennese (both by Redoute’s Choice). Their dam Snippets’ Lass, a Listed winner of seven races, is a sister to Missile Stakes-Gr.3 winner Captain Bax. As her name suggests, Snippets’ Lass is by Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1, Galaxy Handicap-Gr.1 and AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 winner and successful sire Snippets (Lunchtime) and from Snow Finch (IRE) (Storm Bird), a Listed winner in the country of her birth. Hinchinbrook’s sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill (USA)Piccadilly Circus by Royal Academy (USA)) was also a champion sprinter whose wins included the Lightning-Gr.1 and Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 before a career which saw him become Australia’s Champion Sire (2011-12, 2014-15) and also a success internationally. He commands the highest fee in Australia, believed to be around $200,000 at Coolmore. Press Statement’s dam, Kaaptive Empress, was a tough campaigner whose nine wins (1200m-1600m) included a race in Sydney and feature events in the bush. Her sire, Kaaptive Edition (NZ) (KaapstaadBevcarlyn by Sovereign Edition), was Champion Two Year-Old in NZ where his five wins in seven starts included the ARC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 (1400m). At three he was a shock winner of the BMW-Gr.1 at Rosehill (2400m) and was also runner-up in the AJC Derby-Gr.1 and NZ Derby-Gr.1 and third in the Levin Classic-Gr.1 as well as fourth in the Caulfield and Rosehill Guineas. His seven wins came from 1100m (at two) to 2400m. His sire Kaapstad won the VRC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 and is a son of Sir Tristram (IRE) and Eight Carat (GB) (Pieces of Eight), and so a close relation to a host of Gr.1 winners including Octagonal (Zabeel). Press Statement’s second dam is the imported Listed winner Nile Empress (USA) (by the Nijinsky son Upper Nile from I Assume by the Grey Sovereign horse Young Emperor), winner of six races from 1200m-2000m and a noted producer whose descendants include Dinner Date (Mossman), Gr.1 winner The Mighty Lions (Grosvenor) and Vaquera (High Chaparral). This is family 11 and fourth dam, Iaround (Round Table-Itsabet by Heliopolis), is the second dam of Gr.1 winners Sookera (Roberto), Is Your Pleasure (Accipiter) and Leroy S. (Honest Pleasure). Sookera’s dam, Irule, and Press Statement’s third dam I Assume are sisters. Press Statement’s six generation pedigree shows Sir Tristram (6mx4m), Nijinsky (5mx4m) and his sire Northern Dancer (5m,6m,6m,5mx5m), plus Northern Dancer’s dam Natalma 6m,6f,6mx6m, while his dam has multiples of Round Table and Grey Sovereign. He could be particularly interesting with daughters of Lonhro (a son of Octagonal), Choisir, Pins or those with Storm Bird’s son Storm Cat in their pedigrees.

Slipper heritage looms large [ OUTREACH ] Exceed and Excel-Bahia by Snippets

Outreach, who showed great ability at his only race start when second to subsequent Golden Slipper winner Vancouver in the Canonbury Stakes-Gr.3 (1100m), has joined the Widden Stud roster for 2016. The brother to Golden Slipper winner Overreach will stand at $7700. From the family of champion sires Smokey Eyes (IRE) and Sovereign Edition (IRE), with his fifth dam Royal News being a sister to the latter, his more immediate pedigree shows he is by Danehill’s outstanding international sire son Exceed and Excel and from Bahia, by the Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner and successful sire Snippets. He is one of the many good descendants of the imported Life at Last (IRE) (Northfields-Royal News by Sovereign Path), his fourth dam, not the least being the Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 winner and promising young sire Reward for Effort, who is also by Exceed and Excel and from Outreach’s second dam Miss Prospect, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner and noted sire Rory’s Jester. Bred and retained by Corumbene Stud’s George Altomonte who regarded him as a “superior type” to his illustrious sister, Outreach was trained by Peter and Paul Snowden. He tuned up for the races witha trial second over 800m at Warwick Farm on January 8, 2015 behind Sebring Sun and then a 900m Rosehill trial success, running 53 on a soft 5 track to win by about half a length from Mawahibb (fourth in the Canonbury) on January 20. He made his debut in the Canonbury Stakes on January 30 at Rosehill and set the pace, leading at the 400m and 800m in the 1100m event before being run down on the line by the subsequent Slipper winner and champion juvenile of the season in Vancouver, beaten three-quarters of a length in a race run in 1:05.85 (last 600m in 35.45, soft 6) with Chamarel three lengths back in third. The merit of his run was apparent after the race as he pulled up lame in the near hind leg and was later diagnosed with a fractured pelvis. Vancouver, who was resuming from a spell, had earlier won the Breeders’ Plate-LR and would go on to win the Todman-Gr.2 and Slipper-Gr.1 to remain unbeaten in four starts as a juvenile. Peter Snowden said he regarded Outreach as “without doubt being Golden Slipper Class”. “He was a colt with genuine Gr.1-winning speed and I was confident he would have given the 2015 Slipper a shake had he got there. His debut performance to stretch Vancouver was incredible given he wasn’t screwed down,” Snowden added. Managing Millions managing director Vin Cox is another fan. “Outreach is a good looking individual from a tremendous two year-old family that features winners of the Golden Slipper, Blue Diamond and
